Record-breaking quarter for hackers: 5 million new threats in three months

Q: Record-breaking quarter for hackers: 5 million new threats in three months

The major story this quarter is that hackers have broken all records when it comes to creating new threats: Over the last three months, PandaLabs has recorded five million new strains of malware. Most of these were banker Trojans, although adware and spyware have also increased.http://www.pandasecurity.com/emailhtml/oxy...0309_ENG_in.htm

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A report from Quick Heal outlines the top malware afflicting Windows and Android device users, and offers a brief description of each of the malware families.

The second quarter of 2016 saw a small decline in the detection count malware in both Google Android and Windows-based devices. However, this decrease should not be mistaken as a sign of weakness in cyber-criminals, according to a report from Quick Heal Technologies.
The company's research labs recorded a steady increase in the detection of potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), but noted a more concerning matter was the 200 percent increase in the detection of mobile ransomware in this quarter alone. In fact, this level of detection is almost close to half of all the detections in 2015.
Additionally, newer variants of Windows malware have joined the pack of the top 10 malware of the second quarter and security vulnerabilities have swelled to scary proportions.
The report outlines the top malware afflicting Windows and Android users, with a brief low-down on each of the malware families, and lays out the difference between the malware detection stats of this quarter and that of the previous.

The report also includes some observations about certain malware that caught the company's attention due to their unique behavior.
Compared with the previous quarter (Q1 2016), this quarter has seen a decline of 16 percent in the detection count of malware on Windows computers.
The top malware was Trojan.Star... Read more

Based on a new study released by software maker McAfee's Avert Labs group, the technology used to cloak many different forms of malware, especially rootkits, is becoming increasingly complex and harder to detect... Kaspersky...said it identified specific three proof-of-concept attacks being tested out by hackers, at least one of which could pose a challenging risk to network defenders. The program reportedly locates itself in a computer's boot sector and gains control of the device prior to the launch of its operating system. Because the attack is introduced in this manner, Kaspersky said, the program is able to modify many operating system functions...it still may be "extremely difficult" to detect any interception or substitution of system functions...security.ithub.com

DELHI ? October 7, 2009 ? ESET, the leader in proactive threat protection, today announced that it has captured a record 58th VB100 award from Virus Bulletin, the widely-respected independent comparative testing group. October's report focused on the Windows Server 2008 platform. 11 of the 26 entries were awarded the VB100 designation.

Virus Bulletin introduced its first VB100 award in 1998, and conducts several comparatives every year, rotating its platforms between Linux, Windows, Windows servers and Novell Netware. In order to display the VB100 logo, an antivirus product must meet two criteria: (1) Demonstrate it detects all "In-the-Wild" viruses during both on-demand and on-access scanning; and, (2) Generate no false positives when scanning a set of clean files. Since the inception of VB100 awards in 1998, ESET's antivirus products continue to boast a success rate of over 96 percent - the industry's highest. Most antivirus vendors have success ratios in the 50 ? 75 percent range.

"ESET showed some excellent detection rates, with commendably even scores across the trojans and the reactive parts of the RAP set indicating steady handling of new samples, and a splendid showing in the proactive set making for a very high overall average," said John Hawes, Virus Bulletin. "With no false positives ESET is the worthy winner of yet another VB100 award, thus maintaining NOD32's position as the product with the largest number of VB100 awards."

The laptop is only a few months old and it's been doing this for about a fortnight now. Also when i'm playing back a screen recording it does the same thing, but at the same point every time so it's obviously recorded the crackling. Any idea what it could be?

I actually used ESET since v2 and have a legit, good license but recently stopped using it. One day when I had ESET running, fully updated, check for updates every hour ON and start-up scan ON, I was going to terminate firefox which wasent responding so I went to task manager, turns out I had a processes called "cmd.exe" using 99% of my CPU. A quick scan with malwarebytes shown a few Trojans, and after that I was DONE with eset. Re-installed windows and now I got Kaspersky Internet security 2010 with 1 year valid license key.

So, ESET fails you when you least expect it.
Oh, and the trojan cmd.exe was actually downloaded through a USB worm, which ESET has been known for letting through.

This would fill up my backup drive fairly quickly, and therefore, I need to reduce 'Keep saved versions' from the default of 'forever' to about 3 months.  But does this mean that all files older than 3 months will be deleted my File History backup?
 What happens to all my files that have only ever been saved once, but are older than 3 months?  Are these retained in File History or deleted?
The forums on File History do no make this very clear.

A report released today on the software products with the most security flaws in the past three months reveals that almost a quarter of all entries on the monthly Top 20 list were various types of security products.

The report, released by Flexera Software (formerly Secunia), is based on the Flexera Top 20, a list of software products for which security flaws came to light during a calendar month.

According to Flexera, the Top 20 list for the months of August, September, and October included 46 software products that totaled 2,162 vulnerabilities.

The company with the most vulnerable products during this three-month period was IBM, while the most vulnerable product was the Avant Browser.

11 of the 46 apps (23.91%) that found their way on the Top 20 list were security products, from vendors such as AlienVault, IBM, Juniper, McAfee, Palo Alto, and Splunk.

Most flaws were in third-party libraries, not the apps themselves
In most cases, the security flaws didn't affect the security app per se but was a security issue in one of the third-party components and libraries embedded in such products.

"This highlights how important it is that software producers understand the third-party components used in their products and the vulnerabilities associated with them," the Flexera report reads. "All producers ? including those that develop security software ? must act quickly to patch vulnerable components and inform customers, in order to avoid exposing them ... Read more

Guys,

FYI: Microsoft plans to ship the final relese of IE 7 sometime during the four quarter of 2006 through Windows Update. The release will be made avaliable to users running Windows XP SP-2 through BOTH Automatic and Manual Windows Updates. HOWEVER, users will be presented with a screen before installation to:

1.) Install the Update

2.) Don't install the update

3.) Be prompted at a later time.

Additionally, a PERMINENT automatic update blocker for IE 7 will also be provided. This blocker will NOT prevent manual installations of the program by doing a CUSTOM Install at the Windows Update site nor prevent the installation of any CD Rom software through which IE 7 is included.

Hi everyone, still quite new to Win 7 but having a couple of small but annoying problems.

First. The quarter moon stand by button on the keyboard has stopped working for some reason ? I don't think the keyboard's at fault so would appreciate any advice what to do....

Second. The laptop's connected to a 24 inch screen so I like to work with the lid closed, but occasionally when I open the lid for something then close it again the screen goes dark and the text becomes very small. I've tried a few simple suggestions in troubleshoot but still no luck. Again very much appreciate any help....

Grateful thanks in advance.

A:1. Quarter moon stand by button not working ? 2. Text gets smaller.

Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do. Set the "When I press the sleep button" option to what you want to happen when you press the half moon button. If its disabled you may need to change your Power Plan to one that supports hibernation/sleep. Or go into the Change when the computer sleeps and see if its disabled (set to never).
Somewhere in there is a setting for "When I close the lid". I'm on my desktop PC so its not listed for me. You'll need to look at those settings for item no 2.

Hi:

I've created a form in Access-2013 and placed record navigation buttons (using the button wizard) in the footer to allow the user to scroll through the records. They are the usual buttons and function as you would expect:

<< | < | > | >>[/FONT]

Problem is that when a user is on the last record in the table and clicks the ''right" button (in red above), the form displays a blank record. This is normal behavior for Access (as far as I know) and as long as a user enters NO DATA in ANY field, Access does not write the record to the table.

Given that users may be less than astute , I would like to eliminate the possibility of them creating a "blank" record in the table.

Is there anyway to stop this default behavior in Access?

Thanks

Hello All,
I have this database I built for all my music CDs. It is searchable by artist, date recorded, venue, city , state, notes and track title. The search works fine but I have one issue. I use a subform for all the track titles and it displays the correct songs for the CD. However, I get a record for each song. So if one CD has 16 songs I get 16 records for that CD. In my sample dB I have 7 CDs but it shows 117 records because that is the sum of all the songs on those 7 CDs. I want it to show only the 7 CD records and not a record for each song and still be searchable. I can make it show the way I want but then I can't search by song title. A:AVG detected threats, but I'm not sure they are really threats

The JS file type is primarily associated with JavaScript.When a browser runs an applet, the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) stores the downloaded files into its cache folder for quick execution later and better performance. Both legitimate and malicious applets (malicious Java class files) are stored in the Java cache directory and your anti-virus may detect them as threats. The detection can indicate the presence of malicious code which could attempt to exploit a vulnerability in Java which could be used to allow adware, phishing programs or other types of fraudulent software to be installed on a computer. For more information about Java exploits, please refer to Anti-Virus has detected a virus. Is it related to Java?.In your case, these .js files appear to be stored in the WindowsApps folder found on Windows 8.Notification of these files as a threat does not always mean that a machine has been infected; it indicates that a program included the viral class file but this does not mean that it used the malicious functionality.

ASP using an access db. I have create a recordset that will return a single record and I'm trying to retrieve that record. When I try to get the record it won't retrieve that value. This is only happening when it is one record in the recordset. The recordset is not at BOF or EOF. Do anyone have any solutions or other alternatives. Need help ASAP, I have been working on this for several days. Below is the code:

Set rsHotFix2 = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
rsHotFix2.ActiveConnection = MM_AMT_DTS_STRING
rsHotFix2.Source = "SELECT Max([CID]) AS LastCID, SID FROM TCO_Contractors Group By LastCID, SID HAVING (TCO_Contractors.SID= "&rsHirerachy__MMColParam&")"
rsHotFix2.CursorType = 0
rsHotFix2.CursorLocation = 2
rsHotFix2.LockType = 1
rsHotFix2.Open()

if rsHotFix2.bof and rsHotFix2.eof then

response.write "Recordset Is Empty"
else
response.write "Recordset Is Not Empty"
response.write rsHotFix2.Fields(0) & "<BR>"
response.write rsHotFix2.Fields("LastCID") & "<BR>"
response.write rsHotFix2.Fields.Item("LastCID") & "<BR>"
response.write rsHotFix2("LastCID") & "<BR>"
end if
This is what's display on the page
Recordset Is Not Empty

Notice it does display the CID value.

I recently got an IBM computer. It's an Intel Pentium 3, 667mgz. I installed a different Video Card which is a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA).

I only have two options for colors choices. Either 2 or 16. I've been attempting to locate drivers for this but am having no luck. I am NOT experienced when it comes to locating drivers, or which drivers I'm supposed to be looking for.

How can I get a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) to work properly in my computer?

I would have to hazard a guess that you have a problem with your CD's or your drive. Of course, it's very difficult to know with the limited description...

Hello. I am new to this site in terms of posting, but I have used it in the past many times as everyone is always so helpful! I'm really not sure what's happened this time with my laptop, but here's a brief description and if I can include a screen shot I will (as mentioned, still new to this).

I noticed the sound as if my processor was really working, so I checked out the Task Manager processes. I was very surprised to see the 'svchost.exe' process was consuming OVER 1,000,000 K in the Memory Usage! I wathced it for a while and it didn't decrease, so I ended that process. Things seemed fine, but then my Task Bar went from the Windows XP blue look to a Classic Windows sort of theme - the gray color, etc. and it went from being 2 levels high to the default 1 level high (levels so I can see 2 rows of open programs).

Then after about 3 minutes, the same sounds started up - not sounds from the speakers, but like I had tried opening 10 programs at once. Low and behold, the svchost.exe started itself back up.

Another symptom is a beeping every now and then, as if an error or alert box would pop up, but nothing does - only the beep.

I've noticed multiple 'iexplore.exe' processes running at times, even when I haven't yet opened IE8.

When I open IE8 sometimes it starts up with the last session did not close properly - would I like to continue with last se... Read more
