Lenovo T480 Not charging correctly when in a vehicle

Q: Lenovo T480 Not charging correctly when in a vehicle

I have a Lenovo T480 Laptop that I use for work. I do testing in vehicles sometimes and need to charge my laptop when I'm in there. The problem is that when I plug my laptop into an outlet(AC 110V 400W MAX) in a truck my laptop will begin charging for a moment, and then stop, and then start, and then stop, and eventually my computer will crash and restart itself. I have tried using a 140W Power Converter(Schumacher XI14) plugged into cigarette lighter but still the issue persists. When I plug it into a normal outlet everything works fine. I have tried on 3 different vehicles so I know it isn't specific to one. Is there a special charger that I need to use in situations like this? Has anyone else ran into any similar issues? Any help would be appreicated. Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi jmyestre, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

One of these would do it:
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/65W-USB-C-DC-Travel-Adapter/p/40AK006...

It's not uncommon see problems with inverters and power supplies. You are stepping up from 12V DC to 110V AC then back down to 20V DC. This travel adapter goes direct from 12V DC to 20V DC.

Hope this helps!

According to https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/docksSearch/ the Lenovo T480 20L6 laptop is compatible with the ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station. However the docking station uses an entirely different power supply than the laptop (the old blocky rectangular one vs the newer mini rounded rectangle). The laptop itself fits on the docking station, but does not charge despite the docking station being plugged in. There are two connector slots on the dock that appear to be for the newer power supply, however neither of those provide power either. Is the docking station incorrectly listed as compatible when it really isn't, is there a hardware malfunction, or something else entirely?

I have called Lenovo and they stated it was a driver issue of which all have been updated and it is still unresponsive.  As soon as the vehicle stops the computer works like normal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Good morning, Over the past 5-6 months, we have been updating machines to the newer T480, T580, and P52s, with the new style UltraDock (40AH0135US).  As these docks only have display ports, we have been utilizing VGA and DVI adapters to send video out to monitors. Many of the users are experiencing issues where their video, for the laptop and external screens, will blink, or just black out momentarily.  We have been in contact with both Lenovo, and our vendor's support for options.  We have tried* Letting Lenovo replace the docks    * Same issue occurs* Different display to VGA/DVI out adapters    * Same issue occurs* Running a display port cable to the monitor, if available    * Same issue occurs* Tried a different dock (40AJ0135US) that does have a VGA out onboard    * The machine seemed to run well for about a week, then the issue began to occur againWe have been monitoring the logs, and have found a common entry in at least 3 of the machines* In the system logs, we found 2 Informational messages:    * Event ID - 20003 Microsoft-Windows-UserPnP       Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service igfx for Device Instance       ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_5917&SUBSYS_225A17AA&REV_07\3&11583659&0&10 with the following status: 0.    * Event ID - 20001 Microsoft-Windows-UserPnP       Driver M... T480 doesn?t charge with the USB-C AC charger plugged in. when the AC charger is plugged in, the orange LED illuminates and blinks three times, the plugged in logo pops up momentarily then nothing. The thinkpad was purchased in October this year with everything working flawlessly... I then left the standard 45W charger at an airport. I ordered a replacement and received it 6 weeks ago and has been working fine until today... Do I have a dead AC charger? anyone have similar issues?

My t480 no longer charges via thunderbolt dock. Sometimes it wontw boot if anything is plugged into the thinderbolt port either (black screen after Lenovo uefi splash screen) When plugging my power adapter into the port, it will enter pluged in modern but report not charging. It will maintain charge. When plugging a docking station, attached perepherper function normally, but again, not charging. This behavior started recently.  Additionally I noticed that in device manager the UCSI USB connector manager sometimes will error out with an error 43. But this is sporadic and may be unrelated. Device manger view appears to repeatedly refresh, but have not been able to discover the conflict. I refreshed the os (win10) and it worked correctly for a bit, but then started doing the same thing again. Is this an error induced by a recent Lenovo or Microsoft update? Hardware problem?  Software?

Hi, I just bought AC Outlet Portable Charger RAVPower 27000mAh 85W (100W Max). The AC adapter of my ThinkPad T480 is rated at 65W max. So I think the power bank should be capable to charge my laptop.  I tested it to charge my Lenovo ThinkPad T480. The output is unstable. My laptop LCD keeps flickering because the battery keeps switching between charged and discharged. I tried to charge another laptop like ASUS A series and a PC monitor. And it works fine. Charging my Lenovo from house AC power sockets also works like normal. Could anyone give me advice on what is the problem with Lenovo? Any particular setting on my windows 10 or Lenovo BIOS  that I need to change? You could see my recording here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mPBF4hO1tta-9SXwZEVSe3wK7jBzSxIR/view?usp=sharingAlso, the picture of my laptop AC adapter is here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EFRpZJR36EmD4se92NHeIb8u_bFMkBeJ/view?usp=sharing Any help is appreciated.Thank you

My Lenovo G50-30 laptop has suddenly developed a funny problem.  When battery charger is introduced while laptop is on it says "plugged in but not charging" and battery keeps reducing, however battery charges when laptop is switched off. The problem has started happening from approx a 3-4 weeks back. My battery was under warranty and was replaced by Lenovo authorised center Jogeswari (West), Mumbai, India BUT still issue reamins the same.  Service center installed a software called OKO care which randomly allowed charging three times while laptop was ON. However this also did not permanently solve my problem and returned back to same issue hence un-installed software. Then had tried couple of other lenovo softwares (vantage, forgot name of anotehr one) but in vain.  Pls organise immediate help as I have exams starting September 19, 2019 and need laptop very badly for preparing and cant afford to switch off to recharge. Thank you in advance. FYI - There is no capping not to charge beyond 55-60% to safeguard battery. I have Windows 10 (64 bit OS), initial OS which came along with laptop was Windows 8.1 which automatically got upgraded to Windows 10. My laptop is always kept on auto update hence all latest updates are installed. I do not allow any unnecessary software installation.

A:Lenovo G50-30 Battery charging issue - "plugged in but not charging"

That sounds suspiciously like the laptop is in Airport Mode, which if enabled will prevent it from charging when on, yet charge when off, just like you describe.  You can find out via a command promptRight click on start and select Command Prompt (Admin)  -or- Windows PowerShell (Admin)  depending on your system configuration. At the prompt type:  powercfg /getactivescheme    and press EnterIf it comes back with something similar to the image below showing (Airplane) as the active scheme,  then that is likely the culprit. Click on Image to expandIf you find that it is enabled, at the same command prompt window type:  control powercfg.cpl   and press Enter to open the Power control panel applet, and then check to see if Airplane Mode is set as your current power plan. As a last resort, you can also type:  powercfg ?restoredefaultschemes  to reset the Windows power schemes to their default settings.  Best of luck,

I am having a problem with a compaq presario 900 notebook, Win XP SP2. The battery does not charge. Instead of the LED being in a solid state, it blinks continuously. ..and, the battery does not charge.

When I unplug the power or take the battery out and put it back in, it will charge for several minutes and then go back to flashing.

I thought there might be something wrong with the battery so I bought a new one, but it displays the same symptoms. I installed an updated BIOS, but that didn't help.

Any suggestions? Thanks very much.

Hi Folks, Here at the company i work at we recently got lots of X280s and T480s which are fully usb-c for charging and docking station.  We use the thinkpad hybrid docking station and what we've seen is that when we plug in the dock the monitors will take 1-3 minutes to fully startup. The ethernet and charging works as soon as plugged in but thats it unless we wait 1-3 minutes as mentioned for the monitors. I've tried different docking stations and the problem persists. Another issue is the fact that sometimes the LED light next to the USB-C port stays lit orange even when not plugged in. I've done the latest bios and thunderbolt firmware updates.  The two drivers that fail when plugged in are the UCSI USB Connector manager and an Unknown USB Device Port reset. ive already uninstalled them but they keep coming back like that.  Premier support said to change settings in the BIOS which we did together but the problem persists, they said the next step is to switch out the motherboard but this has happened to 30+ machines so we cannot keep having this issue as it affects our users productivity.  Hoping to hear that someone here has an resolution and that we are not the only ones experiencing this major hardware/software failure related to the X280s and T480s

Hello and welcome,

Based on the image in your link that's an 80mm long card.  The T480 WWAN/SSD/Optane slot takes a 2242 card so the one you've linked won't fit.

We are currently using Lenovo T480 laptops with ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Docks (Model 40AC0135US) in our office and frequently encounter the following issues: ? When a user connects their T480 to the dock, their monitors do not display any video? When a user connects their T480 to their dock, their monitors will display video, but USB peripherals (keyboard, mouse) do not work? When disconnecting from a dock, the charging light on the T480 stays lit and Windows shows the laptop is still connected to power and charging? External displays flicker intermittently When a user experience issues with their dock, the only way to get things working again is to shut down the computer, disable the internal battery in the BIOS, and then plug the T480 into the dock and turn it on. However, the issue eventually returns and we have to repeat the steps again. We have also tried the following steps, but continue to see issues:? Run Lenovo System Update and install all driver, bios, and dock firmware updates? Replaced Thunderbolt cable? Change the Thunderbolt Security Level in bios to No Security and Uninstall Thunderbolt Software Most of our laptops are running Windows 10 1709. Has anyone else experienced these issues and know of a good solution?

Hi All,  My '21 days old' ThinkPad T480 - Top of the line machine warms up at the top-left section of the keyboard, just above the vents!   I'm not sure what needs to be done. I raised a complain with the Lenovo Support and the technician who paid a visit today, apparently was ready to replace the motherboard, because he thought that I reported a heating issue with my machine. But that wasn't the case. I'm surprised though that they were ready to replace my machine with a new mother board, without knowing the exact issue.  Any ways, so all he did was replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, I was okay with that, as I read in many forums that replacing the thermal paste helped reduce the heating issues.  Its only now that I'm starting to realize, that I don't think its more of a heating issue, but a SERIOUS design flaw in T480 machines.  The top-left edge portion of the keyboard that which is just above the vents, seems to start warming up within 30 mins of NORMAL usage. I don't see the fan doing its job either, may be its suppose to speed up at very high temps, irrespective, what I think is the problem is that the fan case that is connected to the vents, for some reason the casing touches the vents plastic body and that's transferring the warmness up to the place where ones left palm would naturally rest while typing.    It warms up to the extent that I can feel its not comfortable for me to ... Hello,Let me start off and say that I own a Lenovo T410, T420, T430, T480 and several other machines, and I am very familiar with these devices, and my primary operating systems are Windows 7 and OpenSUSE linux OS. As required by my employer, I bought a new laptop, Lenovo T480 which came with W10Pro (cannot downgrade) and installed an OpenSUSE KDE. In the beginning the T480 on W10 worked smoothly, but after one of the automatic updates, my sound system isn't working properly anymore. Before the update, I could have a dual channel sound output meaning, on W7 I could use "Realtek Audio Manager" to choose that I will have different volume setting for: 1. Machine speakers.2. Headphones if/when plugged in. This would prevent my laptop for blasting sound to the room through the speakers if I accidentally unplugged the headphone. This is a crucial feature to me as I am often connected to a meeting and I sometimes like to listen to music while working. This feature is gone. I have it working on the linux side, it is definitely driver/OS problem, not hardware. First, Lenovo T480 +W10 never came with realtek audio manager support.Second, I cannot download it seperately, and I somewhat get a buggy "resolution" if I downgrade where the mute button sticks. I am wondering if someone was able to solve this.Thank you for your time.-SJLPHI

When i`ve got plugged USB -C Dock from Lenovo to T480 it doesnt see a network via Ethernet cable, anything else is working good with dock (i mean external screens or some USB stuff) but only network is not visible by T480. Windows 10/Updated drivers and BIOS as wellMaybe some Lenovo stuff just crashes it? I am looking for a printer to use inside vehicle. I have Panasonice Toughbook with docking station installed in my car. Running Win-XP OS. Can anyone help me finding a reliable/cheep small printer. Thanks

A:Laser Printing for use inside vehicle

Well, Lexmarks are cheap and small enough to work. HP makes deskjets around the same size, but are generally cost more.

I have comcast and they use a dynamic IP.. They were not able to tell me how often their server updates it.
So I want to know what is the least expensive and best way to hide my IP address.
Thank you

A:What is the best vehicle to hide my ip address or change it

You cannot hide your IP address.  The best bet would be to use a VPN service.  I have a proXPN account.  I mostly use it to verify connection issues.  VPN is not good for gaming as your Internet traffic is being routed through another machine and this naturally introduces lag.

Hello my name is Dylan and I need some help with my laptop. I tried to contact Lenovo with an e-mail but I don't know how, so I am posting on here for help. I would just like to know how to fix my laptop to get it working right.tuallySo, when I start up my laptop, the keyboard lights up, the fan turns on, and the screen turns on but is all black. The Lenovo logo does not come up. There are usually small beeping noises that keep going. The only thing I can access is actually the Boot Menu / App Menu, but I cannot find a way to get my computer to work as normal. I usually run Windows 10.

I am going to help someone with a laptop which I no hardly anything about. Here's what they want to do.

They have an ISP and use there desktop at home. They have a laptop and want to be able to hookup to the Internet in there vehicle. How do you go about doing that? Can you use the same provider? do you have to do special wireless things and if so what? They just want to be able to get on the Internet, don't need to a network to get on there home computer or anything jsut be able to get on the Internet in there vehicle. To be able to go to any website and do things just as if they were on their desktop at home. Can someone give me pointers on all the differnt ways? what they think is the best way? and also the cheapest way that would work but other ways also? I would really appreciate as many responses as possible to give me ideas of how to do it. Thanks

I am installing a touch screen into a vehicle and want to be able to have it power on and off with the vehicle. The environment/hurdles are as follows:
It's in the back seat, so the driver can not just shut it down easily
I know I can have it turn on when power is restored, but don't want to do a 'hard reboot' every time the vehicle is turned off
Constant power and ignition power are available
Available inputs for the trigger:Serial port (RJ45)
LAN
USB
Cash Drawer

The unit is normall used as a Point Of Sale terminal (hense the cash drawer, in case any one was wondering) and is running POS Ready Windows 7 Embedded (Standard)

Any ideas/help is most appreciated!
If you need any more details, please let me know - thanks.

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

My first thought is to add an Uninterruptible Power Supply. Once power is cut to the UPS, then the UPS can signal W7 to shutdown gracefully via a USB connection and the UPS can provide the power for that shutdown. However, UPS systems are not designed to handle repeated discharges and they take a while to charge. A few short trips and you would not have any charge left in the UPS. It would require about 4 hours to recharge.

You have an auto battery:
With enough tinkering, you might be able to get the UPS to use the auto's battery instead of its own battery. You would just need to prevent the UPS from attempting to charge the auto's battery. Diodes can probably do this, but that might put the UPS into a fault mode. It might panic if it is not able to send current into "its" battery.

Striking a middle ground:
To keep the UPS system in tact (to allow it to send current into "its" battery) you might be able to just add the auto's battery in parallel with the existing UPS battery. You would still need to prevent current from flowing from the UPS and into the auto's battery - so diodes are still in order. And UPS batteries are not going to like the heat that can build up inside a vehicle. So you might need to buy a high temp model.
There are UPS systems with connectors that are designed for external batteries and those UPS systems won't try to charge the external battery... but finding one UPS with the desired hardware (connecto... Read more

after burning an audio cd, my motor car front loader cannot play 1st track on cd. the rest of cd is fine. i am burning from my home pc. when i burn at the office, no problems.

A:Problem playing audio cd in motor vehicle

Based on what you said, your burner at home is the problem if it plays in you car using your burner from work. Do you have a stereo you can put the CD in to see if the first track plays? How old is your car? What burner are you using at home? At Work? What program are you using to burn? Are you burning with CD-R's and not CD-RW's?

I bought lenovo y500 two days ago in INDIA.  In the lenovo energy management system 8.0, I found a battery calibration option and decided to do it.  The steps mentioned there were as follows. 1. Full charge2. Full discharge  The process performed full charging followed by complete discharge of the battery which caused the laptop to shut down.   When I tried turning on my laptop, it could not start.  The battery charging indicator LED wasnt switched on even though the power cord was inserted into the laptop.  I could start the laptop only after removing the battery.   Once the laptop was on, I inserted the battery back in and it began to charge.  After about 50% of charging, I removed the power cord and inserted it again.  Now the battery couldnt resume charging.  I again had to shut down the laptop and repeat the above steps of inserting battery after switching on the laptop without battery.  Only then the battery would resume charging. After this, I decided to allow the battery to charge to 100%. But, the charging remained stuck at 99% and could not fully charge the battery.  When I removed and reinserted the power cord, the same problem persisted of battery not resuming charging. Please help me with this problem.  I read on few forums about uninstalling microsoft ACPI which supposedly solves this issue.  However, ACPI returns back after I restart my laptop.I also tried switch... A:LENOVO Y500 BATTERY NOT CHARGING AFTER USING LENOVO'S BATTERY GAUGE CALIBRATION

ADMIN Edit - While the original post below is marked as the solution, because service will be required if the battery will no longer charge after performing a battery reset, I am adding a Lenovo update here to confirm.   Normal operation will allow the battery to relearn its capacity characteristics when using the battery reset function.  Typically this is not needed in normal use..   Batteries are equipped with a safety feature that will permanently disconnect them (like a fuse) if cell imbalance or an internal short is detected.   This tends to be statistically infrequent, but also normal, and would require a battery replacement.  (Batteries have a 1 year warranty).   This battery feature can also  produce similar results to what is being discussed in the thread, so it should first be considered by service.   This particular  forum discussion also involves a situation that could affect a limited number of systems, and could lead service to replace the system board during warranty.

If your system experiences these symptoms, please contact service during the warranty period.
