Hard drive malfunction? USB port malfunction? Or just normal?

Q: Hard drive malfunction? USB port malfunction? Or just normal?

I recently purchased an HP ProBook 450 G3. I am using two passport compact 1 TB drives with my laptop's two USB 3.0 ports. In normal use there is no problem. However, when I copy a lot of data from one to the other (or from one to the laptop's internal drive) the drives keep disconnecting. I know this because first I will get a copying error saying either the source or the destination is missing. Then I will hear the "chime" that Windows makes when a USB device connects or disconnects. Then the autoplay window for the Passport drive will appear. It seems that it spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects. I can continue using it for a time afterward, but it always spontaneously disconnects at some point, always when I am doing large data transfers.

I wondered if I have a poor physical connection---the USB plugs seem a bit loose. I checked if there is any vibration or movement that could break the connection, but so far there is no evidence that anything is moving. The disconnection always happens when a lot of data is being transferred, while the drives are sitting completely still.

Any ideas how to debug this?

Preferred Solution: Hard drive malfunction? USB port malfunction? Or just normal?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Hard drive malfunction? USB port malfunction? Or just normal?

This is a hard situation to diagnose from a distance IMO. "Loose" is somewhat subjective, and barring serious abuse the only kinds of usb connectors & ports I've ever seen fail mechanically are mini and micro USB2 types.

I'd be inclined to suspect the drives first, especially if they are from the same family and were produced around the same time (the "bad batch" phenomenon). Have you tried to reproduce the problem on other machines, or with different drives on your machine?

Use Disk Management to see how big the drive is, how its partitioned, and if there is any unallocated space on the drive: http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_management.htm

And you can use Memtest86+ to test the RAM: http://www.memtest.org/

i've been having a problem with my xbox360 hard drive and i was hoping someone could give me an idea of how to fix it. my xbox

A:xbox360 hard drive malfunction

There is a transfer cable you can get to pull your info from an old drive to a new one. Though, we don't know how damaged yours may be.
Other options would be to find software to access the drive on a PC but not sure where to get it or if it's even allowed by Microsoft.

You can do a few tests maybe.. Remove and reinstall the drive. (Never know if it could be a loose or dirty connection)
Try your drive on a friends XBox and try their drive in yours. That should show if the drive is bad or your console is having trouble. If your friends drive works, put yours back in and see if there is still a problem.
If your drive can't be read, last hope may be to try a transfer kit to a new drive.

Here's the problem. I have a Simpletech external hard drive that, more or less, worked fine. I had it plugged in via usb, and could access files on it. I recently got an Epson NX415 printer/scanner which has a removable data drive for memory cards (compact flash, sD, etc.). After I installed the printer, I found that my computer wouldn't recognize my external drive anymore. When ever I try to turn it on/plug it in, I get the message "USB Device Not Recognized: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, etc." Basically, it will recognize that "something" is plugged in, but windows has no idea what. If I unplug my printer from the computer, and turn my drive back on, it is detected just fine and I can access all my files. Plug the printer back in, the drive still works until I turn it off or restart the computer. If both Printer and External HD are plugged in, the HD malfunctions, but not with the HD alone. I've tried uninstalling all usb drivers also, no dice. It seems that the printer is doing "something" but I have no idea what, it doesn't even seem physically possible that the presence of the printer should have anything to do with the hard drive other than them both being plugged in via USB. Each is running on their own power cord and I've tried different USB port combinations for both devices.

A:USB Hard drive malfunction in conjunction with printer

Hi, This is not an uncommon problem. It would seem likely that you unplugged the USB cable from the external drive while data was being transmitted or without clicking on the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in your Systray. I have just done the same thing by mistake when pulling out a plug. Whether there is some service that can help you by reading your disk, I am not sure. I guess that I'm about to find out! I suggest you obtain USB 2 cables with LEDs that are colour coded or use coloured tape to denote which cable connector is which on your USB sockets. I will post again with any progress I make, colpurps

I have a Seagate 3 TB external hard drive (model SRD00F2) that I use on my desktop dell pc (windows 7 64-bit). I purchased the hard drive on 7/30/13 so it is not even a year old yet. I get an error message saying "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel."

I have tried reformatting the drive, changing the drive letter, etc. I use the drive just for personal use, movies, music, word docs, etc. I have already removed everything from the drive in hopes to completely uninstall and start over with the drive but I still get the error message. Not sure what else I can do. Please help. Thank you

A:External Hard drive malfunction - Seagate 3TB

What type of file were you trying to open that got the error message?

What extension did it have?

Were you able to open other files with the same extension at the time you first got that error message---or did you get the error ONLY for that one file?

Were you ever able to open this particular file or files with a similar extension on this external drive?

I'd be surprised if a re-format is necessary, but I guess you've already done that.

I love minecraft and I think it's a great game, but single player got boring after a while so I tried some multiplayer servers. These were great! Except everywhere I went people were killing me, stealing my stuff and griefing my buildings lol. So I decided one day to make my own server so I can control who does what.

So I downloaded the package, and a bunch of plugins. And everything was working fine, but here's the catch: I never put in the IP address in server.properties, so after a week of building on my server with no one showing up (except my brother), I wondered what was going on.

So after I found out I had to forward the port (25565 and it's Verizon) I looked up some tutorial vids on YouTube. I found one and I did everything it said, downloaded the PFPortChecker, it said my port was up and running, yada yada blah blah blah. So I put my external IP address into the server.properties, and gave it a go (it's a bukkit server just so you know), but it came up with the error message:
[WARNING] **** Failed to bind port! (blah blah blah something about JVM_Bind). Is the port running on another server? (or something like that)

So I googled this so I could fix it, but everywhere I went it kept saying I had to bind the port. ? I could have sworn that the PFPortChecker said it was working, and the YouTube video was about how to bind the port. I did all I could think of; check for typos, restart the computer, blah blah blah. Nothing.

"A USB device has malfunctioned and exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device."

it does it with every single USB cord i can find.

then it shows unknown USB device and its never had this problem before. i have 8 songs on my MP3 and theyre the ones that came on it. i dont particularly care for about... 5.5 of those songs.

anything to help me would be amazing! plus its a family computer so its not like im the only one using it.

Try the device in another usb port. Use one at the back of the system.

If your mp3 player charges from the usb, a failed or failing battery can cause excessive current draw.

Dear Support Team, For a couple of days, the mouse on my HP EliteBook behaves erratically. It starts right away at the start of Windows when the log-in screen with the different profiles appears. I can neither click on any profile nor on the shut-down button. However, I can select a profile via the arrow-keys and the Enter button of my keyboard. Once Windows has loaded, the mouse acts normally. However, after a couple of minutes (or sometimes hours), the mouse starts to behave erratically again. Either the left-click is activated repeatedly, also turning the pointer into scroll mode, or neither left-click nor right-click are reacting at all. Funnily, I discovered how to "unfreeze" the mouse in the latter case: I simply need to start the Windows Task Manager via Ctrl+Alt+Del and the arrow-keys. Once the Task Manager is open, the mouse works normally again. This does not apply to the former phenomenon, though, when the left-click is activated repeatedly. I have consulted many forum entries and tried many remedies. My BIOS is up to date and I also updated the mouse driver via the Device Manager. This last attempt even made things worse. Since Windows installed the driver Synaptics TouchPad V7.0 (Synaptics Pointing Device - v15.0.24 03Jun10), I cannot use the "Tap and Drag" function by holding the second click on the touchpad any more, even though the option is activated in the aforementioned TouchPad V7.0 settings. Hello everyone, bought this laptop couple of weeks ago, running fine EXCEPT... Right side USB3-port is somehow broken/malfunctioning/etc., when I plug in my external 500GB Transcend Storejet USB3 drive it won´t get detected at all, not in Windows (just updated to 1803 without cure), nor in UEFI setup or in Live Linux. In Windows, all that I get is constant Windows detection sound, that continues as long as drive is plugged in. Strange thing is that all other devices like mobile phones, USB sticks or mouse work just fine in that port. And same external drive works just fine when plugged into left side port. And of course in other computers as well. Maybe this is some kind of power issue? And if so is this a feature or system failure? One would assume that all ports can provide adequate power to USB devices?

I have recently bought a CMI8738 C3DX sound card for a few pounds on eBay only for the Gameport on it, not for the sound. I just bought a new external hard disk a few weeks ago, a Samsung 80gb one. It was working fine until a few days ago. I plugged it in as usual and added some files to it and cleared the recycle bin. About 20 minutes later I plugged it in again and this message appeared: "USB Device Not Recognised: One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognise it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message." I tried the troubleshooting thing but it didn't help. Nothing appears under disk management. In device manager, it appears as unknown device and says that no drivers are installed for the device. When I tried it out again a few hours later it worked well again. But a few days later until now, the same thing happened everytime I plugged it in, either that or nothing happens at all. Is there any way I could solve the problem? I'm sure sure I did not bump it or anything. Thanks for the help!

A:External Hard Disk Malfunction

First, do you have this plugged in directly to the USB ports on the motherboard ( back of computer) or thru a hub? many external drives must be plugged in directly tot he motherboard rear USB ports to work correctly.

if it is plugged in directly to the mobo then you need to determine if the Device is at fault or your system is. try the device on another computer if it works with no problem then you know your system is the problem. if it doesnt work then Return the device for a refund or replacement.

If it si the system that is the problem the most likely cuplrit's are 1. the usb controler hub is defectivee or going bad. 2. YOur PSU has unstable voltages and the fluctuations are causing the problem. Check your voltages with a program like SpeedFan. pay particular attention to the +3.3 Volt rail.

another issue is that sound does not work. icon is in task bar but when i adjust volume. the actual bar starts to jump up and down (not the green volume indicator) the actual bar that the user moves to adjust volume.

Have you opened Disk Management and see if the drive is there?

Try this:

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

OK, so yesterday I had a DVD in my Dell PC's (Windows XP) disc drive. I was playing it with PowerDVD. All was fine. I paused it and left the house for a few hours, leaving it open. When I returned, I ejected and reloaded the disc (If I leave it too long it freezes up, and reloading has long been the easiest way to get it going again). Nothing happened. My computer now refuses to believe that there is ever a disc of any kind in the disc drive.

There's NO error message, NO other indication of anything wrong. It simply doesn't recognize that anything is there for reasons beyond my understanding.

I recently inherited an older model dell computer from my dad. As far as I know, there was absolutely nothing wrong with it when I got it. But who knows what could have happened on the trip here. I went and bought windows 7, put the disc in the drive, closed it, and.........nothing. Some flashing lights, some softly whirring gears, but that's it. No windows popping up, no programs magically opening. I looked at some other forums and a couple of them mentioned a device managing something on the control panel. I tried to find it to no avail. I guess I don't have one??? Is that even possible? Whatever, don't care. All I wanna know is how to get this new operating system to work and make the other one and all connected personal data disapear FOR-EV-ER. Anyone have any ideas?

I would test if its a software or hardware issue by installing a bootable CD, and verifying the bios has the CD first in the boot order, in it and see if this kicks off the boot portion. this will tell you if its a hardware or an OS issue.

If its a hardware issue it can be 2 things a bad CD drive and must be replaced or an onboard controller issue and this really means a motherboard replacement.

hello i was fixing my buddies computer (dell) and needed to create a bootdisk to update his bios, and there was an option to create a bootable floppy or a bootable flash drive and i didn't have a floppy so i used my sandisk 1GB flash. after i copied the bootdisk files to my usb flash i restarted his computer with the usb flash connected and it did not work. the problem isn't that i couldn't update his bios because that was not really important, the real problem is that now my usb flash drive cannot be recognized by windows and i get the "USB Device Not Recognized" message on my computer whenever i connect it to the usb port. i understand the problem, and that is copying the bootdisk files to the flash drive changed the system files or whatever on the usb flash that tell windows how to handle it, and now windows sees that it isn't a regular usb flash anymore (now its a bootable disk), which is why i get the error message. i think what i want to do is reformat the usb flash outside of windows but i dont' know how to do this. I purchased a 64 GB hard drive recently. I'm having a really difficult time copying jpeg files onto it - or any files, for that matter. I used this: downloads.pcworld.com/pub/new/utilities/peripherals/SP27608.exe to reformat it, and when I did, now it seems to be working, but I only have 32 GB of space!

I know for sure that there is at least 62.4 GB of space on this disk, so how can I 1) get it to work and 2) get ALL of that space to work?

I'm also going from Mac to PC and back again, and I've noticed that on both computers, I have difficulties, so it's not one or the other... it's the drive.

Please help! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I recently installed a brand spankin new ST3250410AS 250 GB SATA 3.0 gb/s drive, replacing my old ide drive. Windows installed fine. I downloaded and installed all of my asus M2N-SLI chipset drivers as well as video drivers. Everything seems to work fine. However, in my device manager, a device is still listed as missing drivers, and my seagate drive appears to be viewed by windows as an external drive (the safely remove hardware option is shown in the taskbar). Whats the deal? I have installed sata drives before and have not needed any additional drivers other that what comes with the mobo unless running a raid configuration, which in this case i am not.

Additional Note: I like to use usbmrs (usb mouse rate switcher) to force my polling rate up for gaming. I replaced the usbport.sys with an older version and tried running the patch, and it responds with an "unexpected error." Not sure if this is related but this is something i would also like help with.

Any ideas fellas?

OS: Win 7 Pro (64 bit)

I'm having two problems with my fairly new machine (less than half a year old) which appear unconnected, but I would like to clear up. First, the DVD drive stopped working and is not visible (described in the log as a controller error). I have attempted to rewrite the registry entry for the drive, and while it temporarily does work, after a restart it disappears again.

The second problem is relating to packet loss on my router. I would like to be able to exclude the possibility that the packet loss is owing to a trojan/virus/etc. Following a google search, I happened upon a thread on this forum from someone with a similar problem, who was recommended to run a diagnostic using the tools which you suggest. I have now done this as well in the hope that either or perhaps both of these issues can be resolved (should they be owing to malware/trojan/etc.).

Thank you very much for your time!

How about identifying your notebook with its complete product name or number. See the sticker on the box that it was delivered in.

I have a current issue with my laptop that I would like some assistance on. When I go to play a computer game (such as DOTA 2), the CPU fan malfunctions a few minutes into playing the game and then intermittently switches off then on until I shut the computer off for a while. Is there any way to fix this issue? I have already updated my bios and it did not help.

A:CPU Fan Malfunction

Hi jdendrin,

First and foremost, please post your computer specs. Posting computer specs definitely helps us troubleshoot computer issues more efficiently. What is the brand/model of your laptop? Do you have warranty on your laptop? It's possible that the fan inside your laptop is dying.

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP Home Edition on it. All of my drives and devices connect externally and I access them through 3 different USB ports. A week ago I began having problems with my USB ports.

When I turn on my laptop, the devices (a mouse, keyboard and printer) initially are recognized and run well. Then I hear the noise from the comp as if I unplugged a device and my mouse, keyboard and printer are all no longer recognized by the comp. Sometimes I hear the noise as if I plugged them back in, sometimes I don't hear that noise but get an error message saying that my devices are not working properly and need to be replaced. All of my devices are in reality functioning properly. There does not seem to be consistency in when the USB ports stop functioning. During this time I am not touching the connections and at times am not even actively using the comp.

Do I have a trojan virus? or are my USB ports beginning to simply malfunction?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I can't do much with a laptop that cannot save a file to a disk or print a file. I have ad ware and spy ware removal tools (ad aware, spybot search and destroy, spyguard) as well as an updated firewall and antivirus (zone alarm suite) running on the comp. No major risks or problems have been found by these programs.

A:USB Malfunction

Try this: Go to start, control panel, system, click the hardware tab, and click device manager, click the plus next to Universal Serial Bus controllers, and right click and click uninstall on any USB root hubs. Then restart your computer and windows should detect your usb and reinstall the drivers.

Make sure all Windows updates are marked "Successful". If your mail is Yahoo, AT&T or any SBC company they're having trouble with the new mail so the problem might not be on your end.

A:Usb Malfunction

Hi sunsandy4u and welcome to TSF,

Have you looked in the Task Manager to see if you have any Yellow marks by the usb hubs on the tree in the left pane? If so, that would indicate a driver problem.

My modem is usb and required a download into it for it to function properly. The software came with the modem. Also, try another usb port if you have one on your computer.

Hope this might help,

I have a Atapi 6x/32x dvd-rom. Recently, when attempting to insert and install any type of software...dvd or cd it causes my computer to crash and I need to reboot. Sometimes, at that point a warning appears during the reboot process indicating...fatal exception OE: page fault and lists too many numbers to repeat. Could this be hardware or software problems? I have a 2 year old micron 450MHz Intel II that required a hard drive replacement last year (13.0 GB Ultra ATA66 Hard Drive) after emmiting the "sound of Death" Any one have any clues? Thank you

A:dvd-rom malfunction?

For starters, go to start/settings/control panel/system/device manager/ cdrom tab, is it listed correctly , does it have any error indicators. If not, try selecting it, hit remove, reboot and reinstall the drive and software that came with it.
