Lenovo S540 extremely weak wifi - new symptoms

Q: Lenovo S540 extremely weak wifi - new symptoms

Hello everyone There have been plenty of threads about poor wifi performance on Lenovo S540. But this is a new story. It is not poor, it is unhealthily terrible. I purchased S540 in summer 2014 and yes, wifi was weak but tolerable. Around 1 month ago, without a notice and without any intervention from my side, it became unhealthily weak. I mean it, 1 meter from router is more or less fine (three bars out of five), 2 meters - weak and unstable, 3 meters - it doesn't even see the network. No barriers between router and laptop, of course The problem is not with router. That's because I tried two different routers, two different ISPs (and iphone hotspot just in case)- same story in every instance. Also, other devices in my family - laptops, smartphones and tablets - work just fine with existing wifi network. The problem is not with specific wifi card. I replaced wifi card (Intel N 7260) with the new one (nb. and probably lost guarantee by that) but nothing changed at all. The problem is not with software. I have all latest drivers and BIOS, and I also tested the problem under Windows 10 and under Ubuntu liveUSB - absolutely same symptoms, 3 meters from router = no wifi networks seen. P.S. LAN internet works perfectly fine, problem is only with wifi. From the above testings I conclude that problem is with hardware, but not wifi card - is it possibe? I would appreciate any thoughts or ideas on how I should approach the diagnosis, what can be the cause and how to fix it. I have run out of the ideas. Thank youLW

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi LenovoWarrior, I have exactly the same problem. All other devices work flawlessly on the same router. I replaced the wifi card and updated the drivers without any result. Using other routers (at the office) gives the same problem. The signal is very weak and unstable. Like you said: plenty of threads about poor wifi performance on Lenovo S540. @Lenovo: please give us advice what we can do to fix the performance. Thank you,A lenovo user.

Hello,I have 2 Lenovo laptops at home:- E530 + Win7 64bits + Intel Wireless N 2230 => wifi signal is excellent- S540 + Win7 64bits + Intel Wireless N 7260 => wifi signal is really weak Till 2 weeks ago, S540 was working as well as E530, I didn't have any issues with my wifi. But now S540 shows a poor signal strength and is unable to connect unless I put it 2 meters from the router, whereas my E530 can connect even outside the building on that same router. I have no idea about what could have changed between before and now, the only thing I know is that I perform regular driver updates (I have Intel wifi driver v17.0.2.5), that I had a bluetooth mouse connected there till I lost it 4 weeks ago and that the warranty expired 1 month ago...Is the N7260 hardware damaged or is it a "simple" configuration problem ?Can you help me please ? Thanks

A:S540 wifi power is weak and the pb is not the wifi...

I have the same issue since some time, I've didn't change nor update my os/drivers so I fear is something about the hardware. I had many problems since I've bought this model. Hope this is not another case.

Hi people,

You'll have to excuse me as I do not understand computers over and beyond using them for the internet, Facebook and emailing really, so please be patient with me.

My problem is that I had Broadband installed at my home via Talktalk (England) last year & everything was fine. Even though the phone point & thus the router was down in the dining room, I had full strength signal upstairs in my bedroom and elsewhere in the house. I cancelled it when I moved in August this year however, not realising that 2 months later I would be moving back to the very same address again. I got the broadband reconnected last week, however I noticed that the signal strength was really weak. In fact I'd run a router with an extention lead all the way up to my room so other housemates couldn't use it and even though the router was in my bedroom on my desk, the wifi signal would drop out if I sat with my laptop on my bed only aprox 10ft away. Even if I had the laptop right next to the router the signal was only at 2 or 3 bars, which is terrible compared to before.

I've tried connecting directly to the router with a LAN cable and it's fine then, although the new router I was sent sometimes dropped the connection to the internet and seemed unreliable, so I tried the old router which was more stable, but still had a poor signal strength. I've tried connecting to both routers with them plugged directly into the master socket, down in the dining room, as... Read more

so I hate to admit this, but I think the ISP is right.Click to expand...

i dont think they are - loads of vista systems work fine - and if they is an issue usually its because of a problem on the PC - also you mentioned it worked ok when last in the home

I realised that my laptop has been sent for repair since I last lived here, were the hard drive and DVD was changed and the microphone socket either replaced or repaired, so I believe that everything was backed up and then reinstalled onto the new hard drive, including presumably the operating system, which might explain why it worked before, but not now. Hello,  Two days ago I bought the Lenovo U430 touch. After I started the Notebook the first time, I started immediately the Windows 10 upgrade. Afterwards I made a wifi speedtest. I have a VDSL 50 internet connection by Telekom. On my Desktop PC i have usually Download Speedrates from about 43 Mbit/s. But with my Lenovo U430 i have only 0,1 to 10 Mbit/s. That's extremely slow for me. I also updated the Intel(R) Wireless-N 7260 with the newest Drivers from Intel. I have installed the 18.33.0.2 version, but that neither didn't change anything. I have still only a maximum download Speed of 10 Mbit/s . I also tried to start the U430 with Ubuntu and test there the Wifi Speed, but also on Ubuntu I had only a maximum Download Speed of 10 Mbit/s. So what can I do to improve my download speed. Thank you in andance for your replies

A:Lenovo U430 Wifi extremely slow

I fixed my problem with the slow wifi by myself. After i browsed "thousands" of panels. I found a useful entry. There was listed, that you should change the frequency of your router. So I did and spontaneously the download speed increased to 43 Mbit/s. The router sended before in 2.4 Ghz and  5.0 Ghz at the same time. I changed my router configuration to only 2.4 Ghz and that fixed my problem.Maybe that's is helpful for someone else, who has the same Problem like me.

Hi, over the past couple of days I've been receiving some extremely bad wifi. My download peaks at around 0.04Mbps, my upload peaks at around 4Mbps and my ms jitters constantly. It all started when I was deleting a few background processes on my task manager. Assuming that was the problem, I factory reset my PC. It just got worse.... My PC constantly disconnects me from my wifi, and when I get the error message: "Can't connect to this network", it removes all of my wifi networks and changes to a red X. I constantly get poor internet, even though everywhere in the house is fine - Plus, it takes me HOURS to download 10 - 60MB files... Not only that, but my wifi bars keep jittering from 2, to 5, to 3, to 1, to 5 again. I don't know what's going on, but I need some help. I've tried everything

Hi, My laptop has a very weak wifi detection. Only when the wifi signal is very strong can it detect the wifi. I tried contacting HP regarding the same. They said it could be a loose connection with the wifi antenna. I have been waiting for the custumer service in my area to contact me(like HP promised!!!) for quite a long time now . Now I am in urgent need to get this fixed. I was wondering if an external wifi adapter would solve this issue. Mine is a Windows 10 laptop. Model no: ab030tx (pavilion). If an external adapter works, what would you suggest? (I am confused as a lot of products available in market only convert the laptop to a hotspot)

Is the wireless adapter easily accessible through a cover on the bottom (it is on many laptops)? If so, remove and carefully and firmly replace the card three or four times. And, especially, make sure the antenna leads are secure.

I would like to disable the Beats Audio feature, as it is known to change certain volumes and mess with the sound. For example, I noticed that the bass is often muddled and overpowering. However, when I disable it in the Beats Control Panel, the bass suddenly disappears, despite my external equalizer (not the one in the Beats control panel) being neutral. How can I fix the bass problem, or completely remove the Beats features from my laptop? I have looked into past threads on this subjects, but unfortunately the fixes mentioned no longer work with the current drivers/Windows. For example, the IDT drivers that were mentioned are now gone, instead I only have Realtek drivers. EDIT: I have disabled all sound effects in the Windows Sound enhancements tab, this seems to negate some of the changes of disabling Beats Audio. Is this a viable fix?

Hello at all, I am using for almost two years the Lenovo Edge S540 with an Dual Band AC 7260 Wifi card. However, since a couple of weeks I figured out some issues with my WiFi. Sitting 2m away from my router, the signal strenght is just about 70%. As soon as I am 6-7m away, it's totally gone. I first thought the problem might be my WiFi network, but I do not have issues with any other device than my laptop. The problem occurs in with any WiFi I am using...  What can I do to solve this problem? Is it the Wifi card or maybe the antennas? Thanks in advance,Julian

Two days ago, my computer froze and would not respond to anything I did. So I did a cold boot and restarted. I thought nothing unusual of the freeze, I was running many programs in the background as well as having numerous tabs open in Firefox. When my computer started up, I waited impatiently for it to start up, it remained on the Windows XP for a total 20 minutes before I finally reached the login screen. This, of course was unusual and I worried and planned to run Spyware Doctor as soon as possible. Much to my dismay, my computer took even longer to show the Desktop and start all of the normal services, let alone the time it took to open the Start Menu. I shut down the computer and planned to run in Safe Mode. The only Safe Mode that I am able to run without getting the Blue Screen Of Doom is Directory Service Repair. All System Restore dates have been erased and the Security Center is unable to be turned on. I take classes online for school, so it is very important that I get this computer up and running. If you can help me, that would be wonderful.

Hello everybody, I have a thinkpad S540 with an Intel Wireless-N 7260 since 1 year ago. As it happens with another users, sometimes the wifi does not work apropriately (the connection cannot be established), and I have to reboot to fix the problem. I have updated to WIndows 10, installed the lastest Intel Wireless drivers and the issue is not fixed. Besides, I noticed that my laptop has not wifi-ac (5 Ghz) capabilities. Will it fit on my laptop? Must I add an additional antenna for 5 GHz band? How? 3) In internet seems to be another 3rd-party solutions more cheaper than PN 04x6010. Do you recomend some of them realiable for me? 4) If replacing is not feasible due to the lack of an 5 GHz antenna, another solution is to replace my intel wifi-n card by another more realible one (but also wifi-n). I'm having some confusing problems with my tower right now.

Yesterday, I shut it down and restarted it to try to solve a network adapter error. I do this regularly.

It seemed to be booting up normally: it passed the XPC Shuttle screen, showed me a screen that told me:

Then, instead of skipping to the windows logo and booting normally, it told me:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupted:

It told me there that I needed my XP boot CD and to press 'r' on the first screen to start repair. I got this tower hand-me-down, so it did not come with a disk set and I neglected to make my own (silly me). I downloaded a file and used it to make a boot disk. However, when I put this boot disk in the drive, it did not boot from disk as I expected. It did not give me that option, nor can I find any way to boot from disk manually.

Instead, this is what happened: XPC screen, "verifying" screen, and then it flashes a breif, quick OS selection menu which shows TWO options of Windows XP Profession... Read more

If you can see the picture, that is roughly what my flat looks like. Four bedrooms, walls everywhere.

The Red dots are my computers. The one in my room is my laptop which I connect wirelessly. The other one is a PC connected by ethernet(?) directly to the router.

The blue dot in the living was where the router used to be. And I could not get connection to my room. Just barely one bar if I use it by my door.

I recently bought an extension telephone wire to move the router to my corridor (the purple dot) and I can get roughly 3/4 bars on my laptop. The black dots show how the wires were/are connected.

The thing is, it lags. Spiking pings in games, tested the latency is high and internet is really slow. It takes forever to even load pages. I use my laptop back in the living room and its fine.

I also noticed ever, since I moved my router, my max download speed has been decreased. It was possible to get 7MB internet whilst now I'm only getting 1MB. Maybe the new telephone wire is some cheap bad quality one and that is the source to my lag problems too?

I don't know which one is better, can someone help me choose?

A:Why is my WiFi so weak?

First off, you MUST use DSL certified wire for the modem if you expect good performance, the flat telephone cable will really kill your performance.
Hawking Tech has a number of products that will help you increase your wireless range. The root page is Hawking Hi-Gain™ WiFi Range Extending Products.

Some of the more interesting products are this Hawking [HSB2] Hi-Gain WiFi Signal Booster, which can be used on either end of a wireless connection to boost the signal power.

Another way to increase your signal strength is by the use of hi-gain antennas. You can choose from omni-directional or directional models, here are a some examples.

Hawking [HAI7SIP] Hi-Gain 7dBi Omni-Directional Antenna

Hawking [HAI15SC] Hi-Gain 15dBi Corner Antenna

[HAO14SD] Outdoor Hi-Gain 14dBi Directional Antenna Kit

For 802.11n applications, this ZyXEL ANT1106 6db omni-directional antenna can be used.

For really long range outdoor applications, this 24dB parabolic WiFi Antenna may be a good choice.

If you have a wireless adapter that doesn't have provisions for an external antenna, one adapter that I've had good luck with is a Rosewill RNX-G1 USB Wireless Adapter. It's feature is that is has a removable antenna and will accommodate replacement antennas.

This is just a sample of available products, many people have hi-gain antennas with similar specifications, but I haven't seen any other suppliers of signal boosters.

I'm very non-tech savvy so I'm not sure what affects what - but I tried out two open box xps 9365 ( they were both 8gb and 128 (I think) but one had a higher screen resolution. With both computers, the wifi would cut out or go slow at times - especially on 5g. Even when other computers were online and doing fine - the 9365 was always the one to get knocked off (It would say "identifying" for long periods of time.) Often I would have to troubleshoot the network connection and it would repair it and then be fine for awhile...until it happened again. They both also seemed to take a really long time to boot up.
I really love so many things about this 2 in 1 and I'm not doing much with it - writing (screenplay software and word), a very small amount of image editing with gimp,, and web-browsing. So my question is-- would getting a 16gb version of the laptop (or a 512) make it speedier (online) or does that not have anything to do with it?

Do you know what wireless cards are in the systems and what wireless router is in use? I don't think a different version of the notebook, upgraded etc would help with this, as it seems to just be a wireless related issue. Hi: Since I don't know what driver you installed, the one on the support page is from last year. According to the parts list for your notebook, it comes with a Broadcom wireless network adapter. This would be the latest W10 driver for that model wlan card. This package provides the Broadcom Wireless LAN drivers for supported notebook models running a supported operating system. Broadcom Wireless LAN drivers are required to enable the integrated Broadcom Wireless LAN adapter. 7.35.344.10 Rev.A (2 Jun 2016) ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp76001-76500/sp76212.exe

Anyone knows how to solve it without manually going to BIOS every time, and if that software is compatible with my laptop? Edit: I forgot to mention, whole software/drivers are up-to-date, both via Lenovo Vantage and via Windows Update (System version: Windows 10 Pro 1909 18363.476)

Hi , I am trying to dual-boot my S540( bought in June 2019) with Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.I have allocated a separate partition, and boot to Ubuntu pen drive..but somehow Ubntu cannot detect my "unallocated" partition meant for Ubuntu installation. I have already disable Secure Boot in BIOS.  Have anyone successfully installed Linux as second OS? Thanks

when I turn my pc hotspot on using connectify or any other such softwares, it gives very poor signal. But if you keep that device right above the laptop then it works fine.Otherwise just take it slight away from the pc it gives poor signal....I wanted to know if it could  be a hardware or a software problem...

I have had a HP 255 G4 since february and in the past few weeks no matter where I am in the house the computer will either get one bar of wifi signal or no signal at all, normally I would get a full signal no matter where I was in the house. I have other computers such as a msi gaming laptop as well and this has no issue where ever it is in the house. I ran a test on the laptop by connecting it to my iPhone's personal hotspot and placed it right next to it and it still struggled to maintain a one bar connection again. My HP is still covered under it's one year warranty how do I get it booked in for repair cause it is not my wifi provider that is the cause of the issue.

Open Device Manager  2. Open up Network Adapters 3. Right click on the WiFi Adapter for the pc and left click on PROPERTIES  4. Click on Power Management at the top.  5. Remove the check mark beside : ALLOW THE COMPUTER TO TURN OFF THIS DEVICE TO SAVE POWER  6. Click OK  7. Close DEVICE MANAGER and test.     NOTE:  It may also be checked under the FAMILY CONTROLLER (eg. Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller which would be listed under the WiFi Card). If so, you could remove the check mark beside ALLOW THE COMPUTER TO TURN OFF THIS DEVICE TO SAVE POWER. Credits goes to MechPilot Source: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Wireless-and-Networking/HP-Laptop-Pavilion-g6-wifi-connection.... Hello fellow windows 7 users,

I hope you don't mind helping me with an issue I have been having.

Let me explain my situation. A couple years ago, my dad bought a wireless router. For some reason, the signal on it was very weak. We tried tweaking the settings, but no results were produced. We then proceeded to buy another router, in case the one we had was a lemon, it wasn't. Same results from this one too. Then, when we made the switch from TWC to AT&T, we acquired yet another router, which is the one we currently have. We hoped that it was our service provider that was giving us the weak signal, but with AT&T it is exactly the same. We are stumped as to why this is so.

We live in a one story house, and by the time I get to my garage, where I have my brand new Xbox setup, I either get 1 or 0 bars. So it is impossible for me to use the live points I just paid $50 for.

Our router is in a cabinet, but I assume that doesn't make too much of a difference because so is our neighbors, and I get a full 3 bars from their wifi IN MY HOUSE.

So anyways, I would greatly appreciate any input any of you may have as to why we are unable to get a solid strong wifi signal. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

***PS: I am going to go to sleep now as it is rather late, but I am going to check this thread after I get back from school tomorrow, or before school if I have the time. Sorry ***

The wifi adapter that I'm using now is Ralink RT3290 802.11, my laptop has a better poor wifi reception even though the wifi modem is just located near to my room. My roommate is using hp laptop as well but her laptop can connect to the wifi easily. I have always seen the red cross and no wifi is available for me to connect. This is troublesome. I have tried to uninstall the adapter and restart my laptop again but it didn't work. Any suggestions how to fix this?

Hi,

Before we do any troubleshooting, one thing you can try to do if you have not already tried is restarting your router. Also, is this happening to any other devices in your home?

Hi all,
My girlfriend and I are renting an Airbnb for work over the next 4 months. The wifi is strong enough to stream Netflix and Hulu through the smart TV at times and at other times it buffers more than it will play. I also am unable to connect through the google Chromecast to cast video from my phone. It takes forever to load a video from facebook or twitter on my phone through the wifi as well. In the future I would like to be able to connect with an xbox or PlayStation to game through the internet. My question is, will buying a wifi range extender take care of these problems and if so how large of a boost will I need?
Thank you!

This would be the latest W8.1 driver for that model wlan card...Hopefully that will take care of the problem. 6.223.215.21 Rev.B (21 Oct 2015) The package contains Broadcom Wireless LAN driver for supported notebook models running a supported operating system. ?I bought two identical HP laptops a couple years ago.  They are HP ENVY TouchSmart Sleekbook 4, Product # C4H47AV, ?i5 core, ?8 gig, 64 bit, upgraded?recently ?from Win 8.1 to Win 10 ver 1511.The machines are rarely used on Ethernet (via cable) but when connected this way both function 100%.  Both laptops are normally simultaneously used on the inet? via WiFi through my Verizon hotspot model MiFi6620L-1B2D.  Some months ago, maybe a year or more?, one of the two ?machines began having trouble establishing a WiFi connection.  ?There were no hardware changes in the environment at the time.  Initially, the troubled laptop needed to be much closer to the hotspot to connect to and use it than the other ?(identical?) laptop.  ?Over time, t?here seem?ed to be a progressive "insensitivity" of the laptop in question as it has (seemed) to progress to the point that now the hotspot must be within 12" of the laptop for it to connect and successfully use it.The problem first appeared and has remained from well before the laptop was migrated (via Ethernet cable) from Win 8.1 to 10 a couple of months ago.  The other laptop has always seemed to work fine at varying distances from the hotspot.  ?Although I've not verified the various WiFi related driver versions across the machines, both machines are kept in sync software &a... Hi @gcinsetn, Thank you for posting at HP Forums! I have read your post and wanted to help. I understand that  you have two identical HP Envy TouchSmart Sleekbooks, but one can connect to the wireless network while the other cannot at the same distance. Have you tried to run the Windows Network and Internet Troubleshooter? Does it give any error message? (The step 2 on link http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04649175) Also, make sure the below option is disabled:Disable the Power Off option for the adapter:1. Open Device Manager. (Win Key+R > type devmgmt.msc > OK)2. Expand the Network adapters.3. Right click on the Ethernet/Wireless Adapter and click Properties.4. Click the Power Management tab.5. Remove the check mark beside Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.6. Click OK.   You can run the component test in the hardware failure testing to verify the wireless module too:HP Notebook PCs - Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 10, 8) Let me know the test results. If any of these recommendations helps you to reach a solution, please click the "Accept as Solution" button down below in this message. If you wish to say "thanks" for my effort to help, click the "thumbs up" to give me Kudos.  Regards,
