ISA Slot not working with certain cards

Q: ISA Slot not working with certain cards

Hello everyone, thank you for reading this thread. Your assistance is appreciated.

This applies to SuperMicro P55CM motherboard. The ISA slot works with standard cards like Adaptec SCSI cards, but will not recognize ISA cards that are full length and have all the contacts on both sides of the card.

Is there a way to turn the ISA slot "fully on"? Is it working in half mode? Perhaps a jumper setting? Is this a BIOS/CMOS thing?

Thank you in advance,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Does an AGP card work in a PCI slot? Do adapters exist to use an AGP cards in a PCI slots?
Because AGP cards interface w/ system at 2 or 4 times the speed of PCI, would performance of an AGP card used through a PCI slot be limited to the maximum capibilities of PCI technology? Could 2 PCI slots be bridged some how to alow regular use of 1 AGP card?

These may sound like strange questions since AGP cards usually have a slower PCI card equivelent that can be used. I only have PCI slots on my system but I will have an AGP when I upgrade to a high-end PC in about a year. I need a video card for a new monitor; the cost of an AGP "all-in-one" multimedia card is equal to two cards in PCI and AGP versions that can just barely get the job done. I plan to upgrade to a powerful system because I'm going to need it, any wimpy video cards in it are out of the question. An adapter solution would alow use of a killer video card in my current system. Even if the card only performs like a wimp, I'll will have a killer card when upgrading and I'll stay in my budget.

A:AGP cards in a PCI slot?

I am pretty sure you can't use an AGP card in a PCI slot. The connectors are totally different. I have never heard of an adapter either. Hope this helps!

Hi. First of all i have to admit i don't know a hell of a lot about computers. Basically what it is is that my current computer is from dell so has intel integrated extreme graphics and no agp slot. What reasonably cheap but ok quality graphics cards could i but to fit into a PCI slot

A:Graphics Cards for PCI slot

Well, the 5700le is about as good as pci can get(still not as good as agp).

I think I'd get the first one. What model dell do you have? Some dells can't have their integrated graphics disabled in the bios(dell was too lazy to put the option on the bios), check in your bios(press del or f2 when you boot a few times and it should get to the bios) if there is a video setting(like integrated or pci).

If $90 is too much, then consider this for $70

I am using an HP Pavilion dv5215 with XP service pack 3. When I try to put an SD card in the slot, the light that recognizes a card is in flashes for about half a second but doesn't stay on, and XP does not detect any card in the slot.
I tried putting the card in slowly and I found the light flips on intermittently as the card is being inserted. I eventually managed to find a position where the card is about half way in and the light will stay on - but when I did this the computer froze until I moved the card and the light turned off. During no time did the computer ever make the noise that it detected hardware.
The last time I have tried, as I pulled the card out I got the hardware inserted noise... and the hardware removed noise immediately after. I tried to build on this progress but it was to no avail.
What is going on and how can I fix it? I used this laptop a few years ago and the card reader worked back then. The OS is fully updated and according to device manager the SD slot driver is up to date as well.

First of all, I want to say that you can never put a card into another designated slot. Do you know what motherboard model you have? You can find out by downloading this and opening the cpuz.exe file and then going to the mainboard tab. Mainboard = Another name for motherboard .

Hello TechSpot Community,

I am stuck with a slow 9600GT, and am going to go for a huge computer upgrade after saving up some more. My i3 530 is going to be replaced with an i7 875k and the stock cooler may be replaced by watercooling if I have a spare few hundred bucks.

Now, I am a fan of single slot cooling. When I saw the EVGA HydroCopper GTX 470and 480, I was just like 'wow, how nice would one of those be!' But I will never buy an Nvidia card at the moment as they use power, overheat and are expensive, especially the water cooled ones. However, the new HD 6000 series, which I am hoping will smoke the GTX 480 (not literally - I am not buying a PCI-E Barbeque), are a more likely candidate for my new computer.

The problem is that the current flagship from ATi (soon to be AMD), the HD 5870, has the two DL-DVI's stacked on top of each other, so even if watercooled it will still take up two slots. The Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 does not have this problem, but I can't find any sources of single-slot faceplates. Are there any available, or do I have to get it cut in half myself?

Before anyone asks, I am not thinking of getting the more expensive Eyefinity Edition just for the sake of single slotness. I also want the extra monitor outputs for various projects, but it is not completely necessary. Should I buy the current Eyefinity HD 5870, or wait to see if the standard HD 6870 has the same problem, or buy the HD 6870 Eyefinity card? Of course I could... Read more

Someone who shall spend eternity in the fires of damnation has lost the little clamp that holds expansion cards in place. I don't even know what the proper name for this part is and I cannot find it mentioned anywhere as a distinct piece. Does anyone know what it is called and (more importantly) where I can buy one? Please don't guess for me. I am planning on upgrading my video card from an FX 5500 to something higher (but also AGP 8X). I have an older computer that only has an AGP 4X slot. I know that I will be able to get the 8X card to work in a 4X slot, however I am worried that this will make the games run very "chopilly". I heard somebody complaining that textures were unclear and explosions were choppy when they moved an 8X card to a 4X slot.

Thanks in advance.

A:Solved: Will AGP 8X Cards running in an AGP 4X slot be noticeably slower?

There will be a slight drop in performance, not really much to worry about. It will still work I'd say at 90% of its potetial.

I have an HP desktop running Win 7 Pro. My DSLR uses SD cards, and I have always been able to insert the card into the slot, have a little green light come on, then a few seconds later have the card launch a new instance of Windows Explorer showing the card as Drive G. Suddenly (within the last 48 hours or so), the computer can no longer read a card. I tried disabling and re-enabling the drive letter, tried uninstalling, and rebooted twice. Nothing worked.

When I insert a disk and try to view its contents, I get an error message that says, "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (G). The drive is identified as "Generic- Compact Flash USB Device", and it says that it is "working properly".

The SD card is fine. I have two different SD cards, and I can open both of them on other computers without any problems, but neither one can be opened on this computer. I have checked for driver updates, and I am told that I am using the current driver. Could the slot have just died?

Today I tried installing an Intel 9560ngw Wireless-AC/Bluetooth 5.0 CNVi card in a friend's Lenovo Yoga 720 which was having WiFi range issues.  We discovered upon opening the laptop that the black antenna wire was not connected to his Yoga 720's Intel 8265ngw WiFi card, and this was causing the range issue, not a defective card.  However, we had the Intel 9560ngw CNVi card, and those cards aren't that expensive, so we decided to replace the 8265ngw with the 9560ngw anyway, since the laptop has a M.2:CNVio card slot.   After installing the 9560ngw card in the Yoga 720 we found that it would not show up in device manager, and no installation or edition of Intel drivers would get the card to work or be recognized.  We had to reinstall his 8265ngw card with bluetooth 4.2 (poo ). It appears the Yoga 720 has the CNVi slot but no CNVi compatibility.  Could be why it ships with a M.2 8265ngw wifi card.  Has anyone had success installing a CNVi WiFi card in a Lenovo Yoga 720?  Perhaps my friend had too old a Bios version?

I am trying to confirm my assumption that my AGP slot is bad.

I first became aware of my problem when I turned on my monitor to find a black display. As far as I know, I did not cause any physical damage to my computer (i.e. removing the card with the power on, scratching the card/slot, etc.). I tried rebooting the computer to find that the display was still black upon booting.

What I've tried:
- Different monitor
- Different AGP card
- New power supply
- Resetting CMOS

What worked:
- Using a PCI graphics card instead of a AGP card

This is obviously not the solution that I would like to implement. I suppose the next step would be to buy a new motherboard. My current motherboard is an ASUS A7A266 and my preferred graphics card is an ATI All-In-Wonder 7500 AGP. Thanks.

I put a 1.5V stick into a slot where it accepts 1.35V because I did not realize it was a 1.35V slot until the computer didn't start up, which leads me to believe that one of the slots is fried, and the other is still working because I can still turn it on with just 2GB. I placed the back the original RAM, and it only detected 2GB out of 4GB.

My question is, can I use the maximum amount of RAM (8.00GB) in just one slot in the laptop and remove the other one, or will it cause further problems? What can be replaced at this point?

I have 2x 512MB of RAM on my XP machine. Recently I noticed quite a bit of slowdown, so I checked it out with Belarc Advisor and saw that only one of the slots was registering as having RAM in it.

I opend up the tower and swapped the sticks round to make sure it wasn't just a faulty stick, but it's definitely the slot.

I was wondering if one of them could have become disabled somehow? If so, how would I find this out and switch it back on? I'm hoping to avoid buying another motherboard or more RAM for the working slot so if anyone has any ideas, I'd be really grateful.

I have an old Sony Vaio PCV-RX650 desktop with a 1.6GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512mb of ram. It worked great for a while but then suddenly one day the monitor wasn't receiving a signal from the computer. I first thought it was the monitor, but i plugged it in to an old win98 computer and it worked perfectly. So i assumed it was something with the graphics card, so i tried taking it out and putting it back in, but nothing changed. So i got a new cheap card on the internet and put it in, but it still doesn't work. And I've run out of ideas, i cant get anything on the monitor at all, it only says that there's no signal detected and goes into power save mode.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:AGP slot not working?

AGP ports rarely die... Computer is most likely dead, its quite a bit on the age.

Try to reset the board by locating the BIOS jumper (Clear/reset CMOS) - Its a 3-pin jumper near the battery with 2 pins jumped. It should say CMOS or something simular. Switch the position for 5 seconds, then switched it back (The computer is off, but has AC plugged in) Then see if it'll power up. PS: If you cannot locate the jumper - then pop out the battery(looks like a large watch battery).

2) If above doesn't work.try another Power Supply (borrow one) - It doesn't need to fit the case, but you need to power up the board.

3) If that doesn't work, borrow a PCI video card.

If all 3 things don't work, its most likely dead.

If you build yourself - You can recycle the drives into a modern system for about $150 or so (AMD board = $50, dual core CPU = $50, 1GB RAM = $20, case + PSU since SONY is non-standard and very out of date= $75) = $195

Hello! I upgraded my RAM. I bought a 4 GB Crucial SODIMM 1600Mhz stick. I put it in the Slot 1 and it works fine. My PC booted and showed the amount of RAM. And then I shut down my system and put the default 2 GB RAM in Slot 2 to make my system have 6 GB of RAM. But unfortunately together with the 4 GB RAM in Slot 1,when I started my PC with 2 GB RAM in Slot 2, my PC is not booting anymore. I checked if the 2 GB stick was faulty. But it's not. Last week I bought new Asus M4A78-HTPC/RC motherboard, because my old one stopped working. I installed the new one into computer but it isn't working as it is supposed to. I have problems with RAM. I own 4 * 2GB SAMSUNG DDR2 SDRAM M378T5663QZ3-CF7 memory modules.

When I install modules into A1, B1 and B2 socket everything works fine, but when I insert the fourth one into A2 socket Windows doesn't want to boot - I get BSOD, sometimes it says MEMORY MANAGEMENT problem and sometimes it doesn't show up nothing(unhandled exception).

I also tested memory using Memtest86+ bootable USB and with all four modules installed, it shows errors, however when there are only three(A2 module empty) it shows as if there is everything OK.

Then I tested what happens if there is only one memory module inserted into RAM sockets and I inserted it into A2 socket (the one that supposedly doesn't work) then I ran Memtest86+ and much to my surprise it worked. It even booted into Windows.

Oh, yes and one more thing. BIOS detects all memory modules (even when there are all four inserted) and shows correct RAM size.

Now I don't know what the problem is, I tested all the memory modules and they are fine so there must be something wrong with motherboard. Does anyone know what could it be and how to repair it?

Uninstall drivers and instead of installing drivers from the Lenovo website, just reboot windows and let windows handle the installation. See if that helps. Also check device manager to make sure there are no warnings on that specific device. Also check the SD card..make sure it is not in the "Locked" position. The reader would not be able to read it if it is locked.

This is a used Toshiba laptop I got a month ago. The previous owner said he never used the SD card slot. I know why, because it's not working. When I slide any SD card in, the light comes on for 1 second and then comes off. The card is not recognized. Needless to say, I know the cards are good because they work everywhere else, including a USB card reader I have.

I checked Device manager and I don't see a problem. I believe the SD card reader is the "USB Mass Storage Device"?

I ran troubleshooting and it found that there is a problem with PnP devices and an "unknown device doesn't have a driver". It didn't find a solution or the driver.

I went to the Toshiba site and downloaded a couple of card reader driver versions.
Can someone please tell me the sequence, I uninstall, reboot, install new driver?

A:SD card slot not working.

There is a program called AIDA that you can download from here:

EVEREST Ultimate Edition - PC Diagnostics | Lavalys.com

Run it and under Windows Devices look for unknown devices. Click on the unknown device and it will tell you what the device is, probably the SD Card reader. Download the drivers for it from Toshiba and install.

Hello everybody.

Since sending a motherboard in for rma is both money-sink (need to ship it to them, a replacement unit and to reinstall windows) and an excruciating wait (weeks? months?) I'd like to try absolutely everything I can before I do.

Two months ago everything was working fine, then I had to take everything to another room to paint the walls in my room. Start getting "display drivers stopped working" as I plug the unit back, this over the span of three days. Case was cleaned last month, I decide to take out gpu and clean some more. Turn outlet and psu off, as soon as I start unscrewing the dvi cable I can feel static. Unplug psu, discharge power with the case button, take 6870 out and remove that little dust there was, put it back: gpu is powered up, fan spins, permanent black screen at boot, no video signal. Take it off, hook the thing to onboard gfx: everything works fine. Try back with 6870, black screen. Go get PSU tested, it apparently works (they didn't give me a full report on load). Go back, test mobo with three different older ati (pre-amd) cards, 3x black screen. Checked bios to make sure, main adapter was on pci-e.

I had other stuff to do so I put the issue to rest for a few days while I had one of the ati cards (2600 xt) double-checked by a store. As it turns out, the 2600 xt works alright, so I decided to take the plunge and go with a z77-a motherboard to replace the asrock (very cheap and couldn't even overclock so). After ... Read more

A:Card not working in first PCI-E slot

Are you cleaning out all the old drivers before switching all these cards? that can cause a card not to work right. But the reason you are switching to on board is because the bios does not detect the card. These motherboards- if they detect a card in a pcie X16 slot automatically disable on board graphics. So, it seems if you are switching to on board, it means BIOS isn't detecting the card is installed.

First off, this is my exact PC:
Ok so up until recently i have been using a VGA cable to my monitor. I got hold of a nice new HD tv and tried to connect it to the HDMI slot on the back of my computer but i don't get any picture. It is not the TV as my xbox works fine using the same cable to any of the 3 slots in the tv. I have tried turning both the TV and Computer off, then plugging the HDMI in, changing the tv to the correct slot then turning the computer on, nada. when i open nvidia control panel there are no HDMI options as shown

 nvidia panel.png   142.16KB
0 downloadsthe only place the hdmi is shown is in audio devices:

 sound.png   168.33KB
anyone have any idea how to fix this and get the hdmi to work?

Hi everyone, I just recently purchased a customized T420s with an Expresscard SD card reader. However it can not be discovered in Win 7 Pro. I pluged the same Expresscard slot SD card reader into my the other notebook, and it is working. I tried to re-install the operation system from the default recovery drive. The BIOS setting is untoughed. (Verion 1.31). Still it is not working(no tone when pluging or unpluging). So this Expresscard slot on my T420s is not working at all. Is there any driver I need to install? Many thanks!!! 0B06026 VBB INTEL CORE I7-2640M PROC           45M3090 VBB GENUWIN7PROFES.64           0A68625 SBB GW7P64 E           0A68976 SBB 14HD+LDBCKLTANTGLDSPMBBBRD           0B06390 SBB NVIN12PNS2OPG1GICI7-2640MP           45M4572 VBB 4GBPC3-10600DDR3 1333SODMM           45M4839 SBB KEYBOARDUS ENGLISH           0A68978 SBB FINGERPRINT READER           0A68993 SBB 720P HD CAM+INTGR MCRPH           0A68992 SBB IT160GB SLDSTDRV,SRATA&nbs... Hi, I recently decided to upgrade my Paviliion g6-2333el's RAM by adding a second 4GB RAM.I inserted the new RAM in the secondary RAM slot, but the PC seemed unable to find it. Fearing that I could've bought a RAM that was not compatible with my laptop, I tried removing the original RAM and putting the new one in its place: the new RAM was correctly identified.Seeing that the new RAM was indeed compatible, I tried inserting the old one in the secondary slot and the result was the same: the RAM was not seen by the PC. I noticed the following about that secondary RAM slot:1) The RAM seems to be inserting less deeply than in the other slot2) The RAM is very easily brought out of position when it's in that slot (as in, simply slightly touching it will make it fall out of the connector)3) Unlike with the other slot, when the metallic arms that keep the RAM in place are released the RAM doesn't "pop" out on its own Does anybody have any idea what the problem might be? Is the connector broken or is it just that for some reason the RAM can't stay in place?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop and two days ago all the usb ports and my SD slot stopped working. I went to plug in my external hard drive and an sd card to back up photos and they both stopped working. Not just the usb port that I was using, but all 4 of them are not working. They have not worked since, even with a shut down, or restart. I have windows XP. Not sure what else to put here, but appreciate any help.

Okay, odd...they are all working now. I guess, is there anything I can do to make sure this doesn't happen again?

Hello, I have this 4-year old laptop. I bought a Kingston 2GB DDR2 800mhz CL6 PC2-6400 module to install into the second slot (the first one has the stock 2GB RAM module). BIOS didn't recognize it, so I tried to plug the original RAM module from the first slot (A) into the second (B) and the laptop didn't even power on. Then I tried to install the Kingston into the first slot (A) and the laptop did power on and run OK. So it is clear that the second RAM slot is not working properly.
Does it mean that I need to replace the motherboard in order to fix it? Is there any other way this could be fixed (maybe the slot isn't bad, it just needs some setup, maybe cleaning, I don't know)?
Thanks in advance.

If neither module works in that slot, it's a bad memory socket - the mainboard may be repairable but the soldering required will put the price near or over what a replacement board will cost.

I have a double slot AMD HD 7700 GPU. Card came with my XPS 8500 and has been working great for years.  I normally run video to the monitor via the HDMI port on this card. Couple of weeks ago I received notice of an update from AMD. During installation the screen blanked. Since it was a video-related update I thought this normal. It was late so went to bed. Next morning still no video. I tried the DVI port on the card, still no video. Finally plugged into the VGA port on the systems board so I could see what was going on - finally I had video. I've worked with AMD tech support for the last two weeks. Updated all C++ apps, Net Framework, etc., still nothing. Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers multiple times, still nothing. GPU shows as working normally in device manager. In desperation I decided to try the card in an old XPS 420 I have. To my amazement, it worked. I then took the AMD HD 2600 from the 420 and tried it in the PCIe slot on the 8500, no video. So, I now seem to be left with a non-operating PCIe slot. I've read several posts that in some systems the PCIe can be turned off in BIOS. I have A12 on this machine I have not found such a command. I did enable multiple monitors while in the BIOS. I've run the full Dell diagnostic suite, everything checks out 100%.
Before I do something more drastic I'm wondering if there something simple I'm overlooking?

Hello, my problem all started when I accidentally pressed the sleep button on my keyboard. While that was happening I had just started loading a game called League of Legends, had my web browser up, and had a microphone program called Ventrilo all running in the background. Monitor went black and into standby, computer's main light went from blue to orange. When I tried to click on my mouse/press keys on my keyboard it came out of sleep but still no signal from the monitor, I then restarted the computer from it's main switch and still no change. I could hear through my headphones that the computer had booted and made it to the log in screen, but still no monitor signal. The graphics card I'm using in my PCI-E slot at the moment is a Galaxy 450 GTS, been working fine for over 4 months until now (Uses a DVI Cable). At this point I decided to switch out a PCI-E card that uses VGA instead of DVI to see if my chord was buggy knowing that the card is in fully working condition just less powerful, still no change. I plugged my monitor into another computer and my onboard graphics card, works fine.

Thing that I've tried:

-Reset cmos

-Reset motherboard battery

-Seated a VGA PCI-E Graphics Card that I know works fine, still no monitor signal

-System restore

-Tested RAM and took each stick out one by one booting each time individually

-Reseated th... Read more
