Computer plays sound on main speakers while headphones are plugged in?

Q: Computer plays sound on main speakers while headphones are plugged in?

Hi! I'm not very good with computers so I need some help with this.
When I plug in my head phones my computer does not register them and keeps playing music on the main speakers, I have checked the Sound in the controlpanel but only the main speakers are listed there.

I have an Acer Aspire computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit.

Please help since I am clueless with this!

Preferred Solution: Computer plays sound on main speakers while headphones are plugged in?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Affio and welcome to the forums!

Have you tried unplugging the speakers and plugging the headphones into the jack the speakers were in? See if it recognises them then.

The title pretty much says it all. I realize there are other threads out there similar to this, but their solutions either didn't work for me, or the problem wasn't quite the same. My issue is as follows: When I plug my headphones into my laptop (hp dv7t 6c000 quad) audio plays through both the speaker and the headphones, which I don't want. Also, when I check the volume, there are 2 sliders, one for the speakers and one for the headphones. When I check the mixers, almost all programs are under the normal speaker mixer (and they play through the normal speakers), but some (steam being one of them) show up under the headphones mixer. When I move the slider to a new sound volume for the headphones, it makes the little ding sound (through the headphones) and I can hear the test. Disabling my default speakers didn't work, and neither did setting the headphones as default. I uninstalled and reinstalled my drivers. I'm totally at a loss of what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Sound Plays Through Speakers When Headphones Plugged In

Some systems have an Audio Control Panel that allows the option of having the speakers on when you plug in headphones, or to not have speakers on. Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound to see if you have this and the option.

For example, I have RealTek audio and in my Realtek HD Audio Manager, I have the option for how I want the headphone jack to operate.

You say you uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers, but did you use the HP supplied driver? If not, the HP supplied sound driver is the preferred driver. Non-Vendor drivers in many cases may not work or work correctly.

Did my first budget pc build and I feel really sick because of a problem!

I've grown tired trying to fix this on my own and i see this as my last resort.
My problem is that when i plug in my headphones to the front panel of my PC, the sound plays out of the speakers still.
What i want is for the speakers to cut out when i plug my headphones in.
Headphones work as on my laptop speakers cut out when i plug in the headphones!

I've gone through forums and stuff and the instructions/help they have does not cover mine.

Here are 4 printscreens of my problem:

Below is the printscreen of the Speaker properties. As you can see, it shows the front and rear port together.

Below is the window i get when i click on the folder icon (connector settings ) on realtek manager:

Below is when i click on the link 'device advanced settings':

Below is when i click on the speaker icon in taskbar and click on 'volume control options':

So many forums/help guides have the disabled rear panel option thing and among other things but i dont have them.
The audio driver i downloaded from the asus website with respect to my mobo.
I've tried to include everything and sorry if i've left anything out.
Will be checking constantly for replies so i can reply back!

Please guys/girls,

Is there a way to fix this? I'm 20 and i've had really crap headaches over this.
My temp fix is to remove my audio cable from the rear lime panel that goes to my monitor speakers.

I have a laptop and I was using my headphones fine for ages then one day I shut it down and when I opened it again the sound came from both speakers and the headphones. The laptop doesn't even recognise the headphones so that when I plug them in, nothing happens to the laptop, it just plays sound through both. It doesn't show up in the disables devices in sound and I have reinstalled the drivers but nothing works. I have tried this with all headphones and earphones in the house and the computer recognised none. It has been like this for a while now and nothing has changed.
I'm running windows 10.
the problem was sudden, nothing changed when it occurred.

Strange problem! I have some sounds that play through my speakers when headphones are plugged in. For example, if I run Skype, the Skype will play through the headphones (properly), but iTunes will play through speakers, as will anything else.

This also happens when playing Borderlands - I have to unplug and replug headphones to get it to go back!

What gives? How to fix this?

I have IDT HDA as my sound card. Windows forced me to install NVIDIA HDA as well, so I have 2 sound drivers - NVIDIA HDA and IDT HDA AUDIO CODEC.

Like the thread title says, I plug in my headphones and listen to them quite happily but then wait, oh no, the sound is still playing through the speakers! I've had this laptop for over a year now, upgraded to W7 when it came out; this is my first issue with it.

I've had a look at sound in control panel, which lists four options to set as default.
1) Speakers + Redirected Headphones (currently default)
2) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 1
3) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 2
4) Digital Output Device (SPDIF Out)

I have tried using headphones with all four of these as default. The only way I can get any sound at all is to use the first option.

The laptop has two headphone jacks in the front, as well as a front/back/side set up at the rear of the frame, for external speakers I assume.

Please help!

HP Pavilion HDX9430EA
Windows 7 64-bit

I tried putting my headphones in one of the rear ports, which has fixed the problem. However, if anyone could offer advice on how to make it work through the front headphone jack I would appreciate it, as using the rear one is a bit of an inconvenience.

I have looked for hours over the Internet for my problem but I have not found a solution. Sound plays through both the headphones and speakers when I have the headphones plugged in. I want the audio to play only through the headphones when I have them plugged in. When I check my playback devices: http://i.imgur.com/WUhT1UF.png when the headphones are plugged in or not. When I disable the device no audio comes from the laptop. It says my Realtek HD Audio is up to date http://i.imgur.com/cSDUQFv.png. I am using Windows 8.1, 64-bit. A:[SOLVED] Sound plays out comp speakers but not headphones...?

Since they're USB, you may have unknowingly muted them. I had similar issues when the headset I was using was USB..Windows picked it up as an alternate audio source.

So, go to your control panel, then Sounds and Audio Devices. Click the audio tab and change your default playback device to the headset. Once that's done, click the volume button underneath it and make sure it's not muted or turned down all the way.

Once that's checked, before to change your default playback device to the Realtek HD Audio.

If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what to tell you. Since the mic still works, the headset is obviously good..although it IS possible to blow the speakers in the ear pieces..I had that problem with Logitec headsets.

Good Evening Friends,

I have had this problem for a long while now but essentially I am forced to use a headphone setup for my desktop but would really like to use external speakers instead of this current set up. What is confusing me is that these external speakers worked for a good long while then stopped working suddenly. Furthermore I switched monitors to a HP w2207 and was wondering if that had anything to do with it. I have updated Realtek to the current drivers and the premise remains the same. Any help would be much appreciated.

Right click the small speaker in the lower right corner of your task bar. Click Playback devices. Is there a device shown with a green checkmark? Post an image of that window, if you can. (Use Windows Snipping Tool then attach the image using the Paperclip icon in the message text header.)

Forgot to mention: When you plug headphones into the front jack, the default action is to turn off the external speakers so that Windows action is normal.

Hello @misspatrice, Thank you for re-visiting the HP Forums! I understand that there is audio playing from both your speakers and headphones on your HP 15-ac135ds. Begin by performing a hard reset. Once the notebook is back on, follow the No Sound from Speakers document which shows you how to use the audio troubleshooter. HP Notebook PCs - No Sound from Speakers (I know the document says Windows 8 but the steps should be the same for Windows 10) There is also an accepted resolution to an issue similar to this posted by @SuperMario1 at this link: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Audio/Headphones-plugged-in-but-speakers-are-still-playing-sou... After completing these steps I'm sure the audio will be working correctly! If this information has helped you resolve the issue, click the thumbs up!

I'm having a really baffling problem with my laptop resulting in no sound whatsoever. The sound icon shows a red 'x', and in my audio playback devices in the Sound Manager - none appear except a TV I connect by HDMI (my on-board microphone has also gone AWOL). I downloaded new drivers to no avail, performed a system restore, ditto, and the Acer support team are advising resetting the machine to factory settings, which I am loathe to do if I'm unconvinced it would work.

(The speakers are internal, so I've not simply forgotten to plug them in).

I've noticed a few similar problems on this page, does anyone have any solutions? It might be a hardware problem as an attempt to plug in headphones didn't help (although the headphones themselves made a 'feedback noise as they normally do when plugged in to a silent device') .

Any ideas?

Hey all, I'm new here, very frustrated, and hoping I can get this solved.

My computer is a HP dv7-2185DX in total stock form.

I have no sound coming from my speakers. I don't know of any specific trigger. A friend ejected my iPod and walked off with it, but that's the only action I can think of done on the computer for a while.

Looking in the IDT Audio panel it says the following:

With no headphones in - it shows that I have a pair plugged in my middle jack.
With headphones on the left (mic) jack - it shows a mic plugged in and nothing else
With headphones in the middle - it shows both headphone jacks as filled (the one on the right shows up as filled too)
With headphones on the right - it shows both headphone jacks as filled (the one on the right shows up as filled too)

EDIT: More symptoms:

Now it shows the wrong front panel in the IDT Audio screen. It shows as 2-jack layout with mic (L) / headphone (R)

When I plug in phones in my PC into the jacks on the front, it shows as follows....

R side headphone - shows in screen as the right jack
Middle headphone - shows in screen as the right jack
L Mic - shows in screen as the left side mic

** When my phones are plugged in the Mic jack sound is produced under both situations. **

I'd appreciate any help I can get. I already tried rolling back the IDT Audio CODEC (one of the few things I can think to do in this situation, hoping it will help.) I'm going to re-update it and see if that helps, but anything beyond, I'm cluele... Read more

It's as if it doesn't detect the headphones. It says my Realtek audio driver is up-to-date. When I go to manage audio devices, there's only one device listed called "Speakers / Headphones", so I don't know if when I plug my headphones in it's supposed to detect it separately. I've tried multiple headphones, all of which work with other devices. Also, there are two drivers listed under "sound, video, and game controllers". One is Realtek Audio and the other is Intel(R) Display Audio. Should I reinstall them both? This is a new laptop that I got to replace my old laptop which had (different) sound problems, so I'm very frustrated and at my wit's end, help is appreciated, thank you.

First, make sure the headphone cable is fully inserted...
Then you show get a popup to allow you to select the device if you are using a Combined Audio Port.
If you aren't getting the popup, check the task manager to see if on the Startup Tab a Waves MaxxAudio entry is set to enabled.
If you look at the processes tab you should have two entries for Waves, one blue square and one green circle.

I have seen a few posts that are similar to this, but none of them offered solutions and most were not for Win 10, so I figured I would make another. Recently, my audio will come out of my speakers and headphones when headphones are plugged in via the jack. Audio via headphones is incredibly distorted (dialogue completely unintelligable) and will still play through the headphones even when all sound is muted. My headphones are not detected in playback devices (Show disabled devices is enabled) and going to Control Panel>Realtek HD Audio Manager>Device Advanced Settings does not bring up the options for Classic or Multi mode, but instead only displays options for recording devices ("Tie up of input jacks" vs "Separate input jacks"). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling 2 different audio drivers from Lenovo and tested 3 different headphones that connect via the headphone jack. I have not tried usb headphones, but would like to fix the headphone jack primarily. I hope someone is able to help!

Recently, my Lenovo Laptop running Windows 7 has stopped fully recognizing my headphones. I can still hear audio through them, but it won't shut off the audio on my laptop speakers. When I enable multi-streaming in Realtek HD audio manager, and open up the playback devices, I can see that the "Realtek HD Audio 2nd output" is labeled as not plugged in. This problem is consistent when I switch between headphones. I do not need to get this working though; I only need a way to mute my main speakers without stopping sound from coming through the headphones. However, when I disable the speakers, this stops volume from coming through the headphones too. Is there anyway I can mute just the laptop speakers without affecting the headphone output? Thanks a lot for the help.

Realtek has different HD Managers depending on the version and computer. You may have see this . Also check the link on the last post. Also check the Front Jack Detection Setting if you have it.

Unless I have speakers or headphones plugged in, my computer gives me the red "X" over my sound icon in my system tray, and anything that involves sound won't work. This is annoying because I don't always want to listen to sound at work, but I still need to be able to play things that have sound while I listen to music from another source.

I guess I could just find a wire to plug into the headphone jack (yup, that works) but that seems silly. What gives? I've never had this problem on any other computer.

A:Computer thinks it has no sound card unless headphones plugged in

That's normal behavior from what I've seen. If not output devices are detected, the sound is disabled. I'm not sure of the part you are stuck on, but if there's no output device connected, then you obviously aren't going to hear any sounds at all. Your computer likely doesn't have an internal speaker, either. If you want to hear sounds, plug in speakers or another output device.

I think I remember in the realtek settings on my old computer it said something along the lines of "disable front audio when headphone is plugged in" with a check box to toggle on and off.

-- do you see any settings resembling that?
If you have already found the on/off and it does not work, try uninstalling and re-installing the audio drivers and software.

You need to provide more information.

Including your system specs: (make / model, what version of Windows? what Service Pack (SP) release level? is it 32 or 64 bit version of Windows?

And tell us what Windows is reporting

First make sure all your devices are connected and powered on
Click Start->Run, enter: msinfo32. Click the + sign next to Components to expand it
Click Problem Devices. Anything appear?
If yes, click on it, Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy it, Ctrl-V to paste into next post

There should be a RealTek HD Audio Manager on your PC (not sure how it's accessed).  You should be able to reconfigure the jacks with that.

Hey guys,

As per the title, my computer has decided to ditch giving me sound from any sort of device that would normally (speakers and headphones).

This only happened after a installed the Vista Service Pack update yesterday, which is right at the bottom of the picture below (incidently, is it normal to get that many updates?)
So I went on the internet to try and find the problem and it said look up the sound in device manager for a problem. However, there doesn't seem to be a problem (well, to my untrained eye anyway).
Then I went to the sound menu in control panel (just to see what's there) and it says that everything is working (whether it has any relevance, I don't know)
Someone then suggested to me that my drivers needed updating. I clicked on the update button and it said I already had the most suitable driver for the job.

Can somebody help please? As far as I'm aware, all the stuff is working, it's just not producing any sound! Any advice would be extremely appreciated!

The audio from my computer completely went dead when I turned it on. The speaker icon shows the symbol with the 'X' on it and after clicking it and going through the troubleshooter it can detect no problem. I tried updating the drivers through the HP website, and uninstall/reinstalled them but it still doesn't work. I even tried rolling back the computer to a restore point but that didn't work either.

The speakers are built into my monitor and is connected through a normal audio jack (not HDMI). I normally use my headphones through a jack built into the front of the tower.

My computer is a hp Pavillion Elite m9400f, Windows 7 Ultimate 64X (It also has a ATI HD Radeon 5770 graphics card; but I'm not sure if it's relevant to what might be causing this problem)

Any and all help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

A:No sound from speakers or headphones, computer shows them as unplugged

You can try going to your device manager. Right click the audio device and select disable. Wait a minute, then right click again and select enable. See if this works for you.

Here's a strange request.

Is it possible to set my Windows 7 system up so that when I plug in headphones and play a music file, the music is audible in both the headphones as well as the computer's speakers? I know this sounds stupid, and there is almost no good reason to do this as far as I am concerned, but I have a co-worker badgering me about this.

What we actually have is a telephone operator headset plugged in via USB. When the phone rings, the sound comes in over the headset. The perceived problem is that if the operator is not at his or her station, when the phone rings, they won't be able to hear it. If the sound came out of the computer's speakers as well, then if an operator was away from his or her desk, they could hear it and answer the phone. We would obviously need a very simple way to toggle the volume of the computer's speakers.

My guess is that this can't be done. When I look at the "volume mixer" in Windows, it has one category for "Speakers/Headphones." I can't find a way to isolate either of these outputs.

Can this be done?

Are you trying to get your sound through the HDMI connector or are your speakers connected to a 3.5mm audio jack?

The only device listed is the HDMI, I just had this issue, updating the driver didnt fix it for me, I had to remove the driver then restart. After that selecting "speakers" as the default device fixed it for me.

You should have more devices listed in the left hand pane of your screen shot "sound"

Hi: Did you install the IDT audio driver?  The AMD device is just for the HDMI port. This package contains the driver that enables the IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59001-59500/sp59154.exe

Hi. The sound on my laptop will not work. I think this occured when I tried to update my sound card drivers... Anyone wanna help a brotha' out?
The little speaker icon in the tray has an X on it and reads what is in the title. I will provide a link to a picture of the sound control options.

Hope this helps!

There is no need to update any drivers unless its required by the manufacturers for improvements/fix or patches on certain glitch. But rarely this happens. Unless there is something wrong with your PC, do not change anything. Its possible that you have downloaded a different driver so check on you device manager, sound controller and post your laptop model/brand.

I just reinstalled Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit and I have no audio. Not going to explain much but im just going to show you with a screenshot.

A:No speakers or headphones are plugged in

You only have HDMI audio (from the Video card) and not PC audio. I do not see a sound hardware driver installed. I see one generic, basic function Windows installed High Definition Audio but that's all. The actual sound hardware driver is not installed.

First step is to install the correct sound driver, if there is one for Win 7. This looks like an older PC and it may not be (fully) Windows 7 compatible. If this is the case you will have to install a Win 7 compatible sound card. If the sound hardware was Win 7 compatible, Windows would have installed the High Definition Audio driver for the PC's sound and you would have sound.

A comment, not related to your sound problem. With this old hardware and only 2GB of RAM and a 64 bit OS, I'm surprised this does much more than load the Operating System.

Hi there,

I have read through the forums on this issue that I can see others are also having. I have uninstalled and re-installed drivers, checked that the audio is enabled in the BIOS (Only options are Disabled or Auto) Tried both green jack outputs (front panel and back) and have tested the headphones in other devices and tried two different sets of headphones and still I'm getting this message.
I have the same issue as others that have posted previously, where when accessing the Sound>Manage Audio Devices, it only shows AMD HDMI Output (Not plugged in) which is correct as I am no longer running this PC through an AV unit with HDMI, it is now VGA to monitor and no sound .
I went to open my Windows 7 software case only to find the disk is no longer there! So the option of doing a fix via the OS disk is currently unavailable. I have recently moved house (hence changing the set up) so will probably come across it as I unpack eventually however would really like to find a simpler and more expedient solution before then!!

I really appreciate anyone's help here, sorry if it's an obvious one and I can't see the wood for the trees!

Many thanks, Amy

A:'No Speakers or headphones are plugged in' but they are!

As the sound device, whatever it is (you didn't list it) is not listed, that is the reason there is no sound.

Please list everything that is displayed in the Device Manger, Sound section. Also what sound device that you have, such as RealTek, Conexant, etc.

Whatever drivers you need are available on the Gigabyte downloads for your motherboard, you don't need the original install disc (in fact there may be later drivers on the web site).

I recently took my computer to get a new graphics card GeForce GT 240 and I came back plugged in everything and my speakers didn't work. It worked before I got my new graphics card, Please help this is extremely annoying, I've tried so many other ways.

A:No speakers or headphones are plugged in. PLEASE HELP!

If you have an independent sound card, it's likely that whomever installed your gfx card unseated your sound card from the PCI slot. You simply need to open up your computer and make sure that all of the cards (graphics, sound, etc) are all seated properly and have all their cables connected.

Note: When you open the side of your computer, the cards that are seated in slots on the largest board are the PCI cards. The one with the largest dies and fans is likely the graphics card, the sound card is the other card. If there is only one card then your sound is built into your motherboard. In that case you may have a hardware failure.

Are you using the front or rear io ports? Do you have the speaker icon in the lower right hand corner? Have you gone in and selected the proper playback device?
