Q: password management

does anyone know where does windows vista backs up the passwords and how to manage them??

Preferred Solution: password management

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello roqkster, welcome to Vista Forums!

In the Vista start menu click this and you can manage the password in the window that opens; be sure to post back to keep us informed.

I've been thinking about the use of password managers lately and wondering whether it's worth exploring an alternative.

The problem, as I see it, is with having one master password - I know this is supposed to be kept securely by the developers, but I've heard of several security scares in the last few years. Of course, this is much more secure than simply using the same password everywhere, but if hackers were able to gain access to people's master passwords, surely it would be a goldmine for them and disatrous for everyone else! Even if the master passwords are well protected, this is possible, right?

Back to the alternative... what do you think about the possibility of devising a new unique password each time, writing it down, and physically guarding it. However, this would just be for the accounts you deem most vital, so a password manager could still be used for less important accounts. I know it sounds inconvenient, and I suppose it would only work if you're not prone to losing things, but could be a viable option?

Hi

What is the 'best practice' for managing one's passwords?

A) HOW SHOULD I STORE PASSWORDS?
Problems:
1. I need to manage a fairly large number (i.e. 50+). So there are too many to remember.

2. Obviously I don't want to keep them inside a simple unencrypted text file, in case my data gets hacked.

3. If I download dedicated password application how can I trust it?(!)

4. I don't trust 'The Cloud' nor any of the big data owners: google, apple, amazon, drop-box et al.

5. I don't want to be tied to anything that I cant migrate with me onto my next hardware, when I come to upgrade my PC(s).

Either way I dont really want to pay anything (certainly not more than a few dollars) for this security.

I was thinking of using something like TrueCrypt to create a virtual drive (that I encrypt robustly) and then storing my passwords in an ordinary text file.
That way I would have a single master password (for TrueCrypt) which would give access to all the other passwords.
[Aside: Obviously if I forget my master password I'm screwed!]
B) PASSWORD CONVENTIONS
As you know many sites require passwords that meet specific rules e.g.
- At least one upper AND one lower case letter
- At least one digit
- No tripplets (three characters the same next to each other) (iTunes!)
- No more than 16 characters

Double-click problems
Some sites allow extended ASCII characters (e.g. ?$%^&*) , which give VASTLY better security of course. BUT they are a mighty pain to use regularly because if you... Read more

I have gone through the same thing. Most of mine I don't worry too much about, like this site. If anyone discovered my password here, what harm could come to me, except someone typing messages under my name, no big deal. The only ones I really worry about are my bank, paypal and ones like that where money is involved. I have a word document with Passwords that is buried in a file and is doubtful anyone could find it.

I'm looking for one of those apps that remembers them all for you, and even enters them into webpages for you when you hit a preset key combination, e.g Ctrl. X.

Now, these are passwords, mind you. The program should be encrypted and secure. And preferably of a small size, so I can install it on a thumbdrive.

Any suggestions?

As with a lot of people, I have many tens of web accounts of various sorts, including one on this site. While I do not have the exact same user name and password for all of them, there is a fair degree of repetition. In addition, I do not change the passwords all too often.

So, I am interested in some secure password management solution that can lead to more secure practices and if possible, help with more occasional use of public shared computers. I came across WIseKey / WIseForm solution here. While not free, it is well within what I'd pay to sleep better. I have two questions:

What are the better solutions for consumers (not corporate networks)?
Has anyone have view on or experience with WIseKey or another solution that they can share?
Am I being over sensitive to this threat?
I know this is not the typical 'Help! Blue screen!" posts even I usually post, but I am hoping I can get some advice from the highly knowledgeable people that post on this board.

A:web single sign on / password management solutions... WIseKey?

I haven't used WIseKey, but I really like KeePass Password Safe, a free open-source password manager. It's easy to use, you open it with a single password, then when go to a site you just drag-and-drop your username and password into the appropriate boxes.

There's a portable version that you can put on a USB stick for when you use public shared computers.

Hiya
Networked, distributed computing environments require continuous maintenance, including the application of patches and fixes. The need to apply patches is not necessarily the result of flaws or deficiencies in operating systems or applications. Patches may be required to maintain a viable IT environment in the face of software updates, to block opportunities to exploit extended technologies, or to neutralize emerging security threats. These factors exist in all development and production environments. The critical question facing IT managers is how well their organizations will manage the inevitable patch management process.

Hello HP community, I've been upgrading our organization's laptops to Windows 10 and turning on BitLocker for TPM-enabled machines. We have a decent volume of the 6460b model (around 75), and I have gone through well over half of them without issue. I've had to turn the TPM on for several of them, but that's no problem. However, last week, I was getting two more of the laptops updated and suddently encountered an error message when going to the TPM Management interface within Windows: "Cannot load management console "Loading of the management console failed. The device that is required by this cryptographic provider is not ready for use. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80090030) Try again." The TPM shows in the device manager, but not in Speccy. This is nothing new to me, that is to say, managing shares from the Computer Management Snap-In. What is "new" to me is why on certain machines on the network the "Properties" and "Stop Sharing" items are not listed int he context menu when you right-click on a share. Is this a permissions issue? I can't see that it would be seeing as how the "Computer Administrator" is ticked in the "Users" control panel. Any ideas? I've actually wondered about this for a long time, but now it's essential that I know.

A:Share Management via "Computer Management" Snap-In

Yes this is permission issue. You have to give user file sharing permission and security permission. If you give premission to user to use files or share have to check your security permission. Also make sure users power user permission on local computer.Check your GPO for users instead.

You can also try SFC scan:

The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:
1. Click Start and then type cmd in the Start Search box.

2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue
3. At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

4. Hit Enter.

The SFC scan should replace the corrupted files.
I hope this helps you, Good Luck.

After applying above settings, the user can change the password by default at the expire day. Please create a new domain profile and test the issue on several Windows
7 machines. Can the user be enforced to change password at expire day? If not, please refer to the following steps to collect the information for research.

1. On the DC, open GPMC, right-click Group Policy Results, choose Group Policy Results Wizard, follow the wizard to collect a Group Policy result for problematic

2. On the Windows 7 machine where GPO failed to apply, please perform the following steps to collect log files:

a) Please add the specified registry key to enable group policy log (%windir%\debug\usermode\gpsvc.log), and remove or rename it to disable group policy log after

b) Then on the problematic Win7 machine, run command “gpupdate /force”.

c) Then on the problematic Win7 machine, run command “gpresult /v > gpr_win7.txt”, send me gpr_win7.txt file.

As above really. Trying to create a network for file sharing, as have upgraded the 'server' (part of a Workgroup, not a Domain) from WinXP to Win7 and experienced problems ever since. Ironically the problems haven't mainly been with sharing files between Win7 and WinXP systems, but between 2 Win7 systems.

I bought a new Win7 laptop and tried to connect it to the server, but it hasn't had Read/Write privileges over the files in the Win7 server. Entering a username and password to gain access to the servers folders has not been a problem, and as far as I know, opening files such as documents has not been a problem either. However, when trying to save an edited document, access is denied, and if I try to open an executable file (this is necessary for a node installation), it prompts me for a network password.

Every combination possible of username and password from the 2 systems (including '\' or 'SYSTEMNAME\' before the username) has not worked. I tried syncing the times which was apparently a previous problem, but to no avail. I am unable to access Local Security Policy, as the server is running off Home Premium. I have tried creating a new workgroup, removing and changing passwords, enabling guest access to the network through the Windows Resource Kit Command Shell, creating identical users on both computers, but nothing appears to have worked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

You'll need to call Dell with verification of ownership -- it may not be worth it though, since the call will cost about $60, which is probably about six times more than the entire system is worth.
The other option is to replace the mainboard - which is probably well under $60.

You might try clicking "Apply" before "OK" in the same window that you entered the password. (I'm guessing that since you are using Windows 7, your email program is Windows Live Mail, not Vista's Windows Mail, although the procedure would be the same anyway.)

I have three PCs (two desktop and one laptop) all running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (1607).

Each system has a shared partition, set up exactly the same, which has sharing set for 'everyone', with 'full control'.

Password protected sharing is turned off on each system (in "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings").

Each of the desktop systems can access each other's shared and also the laptop's shared partition.

The problem is when I try to use the laptop to access the shares on either of the desktop systems, I get a pop-up requester asking for a username and password. (see below - the laptop is "T400" and one of the desktops is "A960").

Any idea why this would be happening? I've checked the settings on all systems (sharing and network) and can see not reason for the password prompt appearing.

Previously I was running Win 10 Pro 64-bit (1511) on all three systems and never encountered this error.

Cheers,

Mike.

Hello all,

I hope I can get some help / guidance from some one with more experience with the M400 if possible?!

I reinstalled the OS and setup the biometric security for me, which has worked flawlessly! However I stupidly also set up the boot up security (BIOS Password). So when the tablet gets turned on I can scan my finger and get in without any issues, however I now want to turn the boot up security off. So I booted it in to the OS and went to disable it....however it asks for my password....which I have forgot as I have been a typical end user and have been only using my bloody finger!

Does anyone know if I can disable the BIOS security while in the OS using the biomentric security rather than entering a password? I have tried just changing the admin password within the win OS but that doesn't work....any ideas?

Any help with be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

You are speaking about BIOS password which you set up in the BIOS?
As far as I know you cannot remove the BIOS password if you don?t know the old BIOS password.
In such case just the Toshiba ASP could help you? just the Toshiba ASP technician could remove the unknown BIOS password
