Windows 7 won't detect GeForce 8400M GS graphics card

Q: Windows 7 won't detect GeForce 8400M GS graphics card

I just installed windows 7 professional last night and when trying to personalize my theme, i realized that i couldn't change window color. It only gave me the contrast themes unlike in vista where i could choose the color and it would still look like vista. I'm not sure if that last sentence made much sense, but i hope you get the idea. I can still use the desktop backgrounds and sounds, but not the aero window colors.

When I go to device manager, the only graphics adaptor it shows is the standard VGA. When I had Vista I didn't have any problem. But now that I have Windows 7, the OS won't detect the graphics card. Is it not compatible with Windows 7? I saw another post with a fix for the 8400M GT, and was wondering if maybe there was hope for me.

Thanks in advance for any advice

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Google/goto NVIDIA drivers downloads on Nvidia website, select your graphics card and 32/64 bit. It should give you the latest driver to download. (195.62)

So, I have upgraded my laptop from Vista-32bits to Windows 7-32bits. I often play games and once my graphics card failed and made my laptop restart. In my attempt to fix it I think I only made it worse by messing up in the device manager, it seems I deleted my graphics card to try and reinstall it. Now I don't seem to be able to re-add it to my device manager, I've tried to download the driver but it does't seem to work, I am now using the Standard VGA dislpay. I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR21S. What can I do to get it back to work, is it a hardware problem or a driver problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I successfully installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit by choosing custom install on my Sony Vaio VGN-NR21S. I didnt delete my Windows Vista Home Edition 32-bit recovery partition.

I am having difficulty in updating the graphics card which is a Nvidia Geforce 8400M GT. I downloaded a desktop 8400 driver from Nvidia site(UK) for me.

I then used the mobility modder tool for Nvidia and it modified the inf file. I then ran the Setup.exe from the Nvidia directory.

The problem is that i keep getting a message saying "The System has not been modified" after running the setup.exe

I then tried the notebook 8400M GT driver from Nvidia site(even though its not supported by Sony) That didnt work.

So i then tried using the Mobility modder on the notebook 8400M driver but the same problem occurs.

I am not confident in modifying the inf file outlined in the following:

Here are my hardware ID's:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&CC_030000

if possible could somebody create me an inf file please?

Thanks in advance,

This wasn't what you asked, but -

Can you install the Vista graphics driver?

I had to do something like that with my Compaq notebook (8200M graphics). Since doing that, I was able to get drivers from Windows Update or use the generic nVidia mobile drivers. I can't tell you whether it was necessary, but it may have helped.

A:Computer won't Detect Nvidia Geforce 730 Graphics card

You need to tell use more about your computer, what is the make and model of it, what is the model of the motherboard, what is the model of the power supply? What version of Windows?

Is it the Geforce GT 730 you bought or something else? What is the intended use of the new graphics card?

And what graphics card or GPU did you have before adding this card?

Do you have the monitor connected to the new graphics card or do you by chance still have it connected to the integrated graphics that many computer have? It needs to be connected to the new card before turning the computer on.

Have you made sure the card is seated fully in the slot?

Have you tried using the latest drivers from the NVidia website: http://www.geforce.com/drivers

Do you have access to another computer to try the card to make sure its not defective?

The game loads fine until i begin playing, and the graphics are completely messed up. Picture attached below in thumbnails

I can still move around in the game but cannot play it as you can see.
What happened first was I had an issue with direct x 9.0. I would play the game and it would crash within couple hours of playing and it would give me this error "Directx Has Encountered an Unrecoverable Error" which i already know I have the most recent update for that. Checked my DirectX files; No problems found there and i have the most recent DirectX update. Checked my Graphics Card to see if it needed to be updated. Looked as though it did so I updated it to the most recent update for the Geforce 8400M GS: Verde Driver v266.58. After that I had no more crashes and no more Directx errors but, I started having the graphical issue problems in the picture. I have also made sure I have my settings set to the lowest settings in gameplay because my video card is not that impressive. It's beyond me at this point what to do, I have uninstalled all my graphic drivers and re-installed them again to still come to this problem. I bought the Modern Warfare 2 game from steam, and I know all my specs meet minimum required specs besides my CPU speed, but i still don't see why I shouldn't be able to play the game. I will post more information on here including the DxDiag Report.

Hi,

I've been running Windows 7 after upgrading from Vista for a couple of months without any problems. The compatibility program keeps giving me the all clear, but for the past week my graphics card has been spontaneously crashing when I go to play Minecraft and Bejeweled 3. The first two times it recovered and I couldn't seem to track down an error report to find out why; tonight when I opened up Bejeweled I had to manually shut the laptop down as the screen glitched and froze (the image started to break up into bars and then locked completely). It's now crashed twice in one night on games I seemed to be able to run previously without much issue (well, minecraft is its own monster, but Bejeweled has never done this to me before! ). I've been surfing the forums and it looks like there have been very similar issues with the card and Windows 7, but all the related posts are well over a year old and don't quite seem to match up. I'm creating a backup and am prepared to try and update the driver as one old thread suggested, but I wanted to get some current feedback first.

I am running Windows 7 32 bit home premium on a Dell Inspiron 1420 notebook; a Core2 Duo 1.80GHz processor; 2GM memory; (A10?) BIOS; INVIDIA GeForce 8400m GS driver version 8.15.11.8621.

A:INVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS card crashing, some Qs b4 I update driver?

While a driver update might work, I don't think this is the real cause of the problem...it sounds like a hardware failure to me, most likely due to overheating. Does the card have a fan, if so, can you open up your machine and check that the fan is still running?

Doh, just noticed it's a laptop (mobile chipset). You could use monitoring tools such as SpeedFan or one of my favorite Windows sidebar gadgets called GPU Observer to check the temperature.

Anyway, the driver you're looking at is the correct one and it's not a bad idea to update - just be on the safe side and make a backup or restore point first.

I've recently been having trouble installing official and forceware drivers for my Geforce 8400m GS on my Dell 1420 since I upgrade to Windows 7 32-bit from Vista. When I uninstall my current drivers and reboot Windows fails to boot in normal or safe mode. Generally when I install drivers I reboot into safe mode, run driver sweeper and properly install them. Windows kept freezing at the classpnp.sys file so I changed the file to classpnp.old after some research but it started to BSOD me at the disk.sys file.

So I tried to just outright install the drivers from device manager by upgrading and I would get a message saying Windows couldn't find drivers compatible with any of my hardware. I've done a lot of homework, downloaded countless drivers, disabled aero, used mobility modder, and done just about all I feel I can do to fix this. These drivers worked fine with Vista and I really don't want to downgrade because I lost my product key and disc so that would be a pain. If anyone has had this issue and knows of a driver of modified inf file that would fix this problem I would greatly appreciate it. This has been frustrating to say the least

No matter which driver I install, even using Mobility Modder, the result is the same ....black screen after windows logo upon restart, so all I can use is standard vga adapter.

Tried also downloading the driver and then manually installing via device manager and noticed i have 3 instances of my card, could this be the problem? If so how would I correct it.

Hello dear community, I've just formatted my notebook again and installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. The problem is that system is unable to detect my graphics card - Radeon HD 7600M, which was working fine before. Device manager is showing it as a standard VGA graphics card. My notebook is also using Intel HD graphics 4000 and it's working fine after manually instaling required drivers. When I am trying to install drivers for Radeon, two things are happening: - setup manager returns error message that installation process failed(I've even tried to edit "InstallManager.cfg" file and change "WorkaroundInstall=false" to true, setup manager installed everything(AMD catalyst, etc.), just not the driver - as soon as setup manager is trying to detect my graphics card, blue screen appears and notebook is rebooting It is pretty random which one of the above things will happen. I've tried installing few different drivers and nothing changed. I've also tried(in the device manager) to manually choose the location with the driver - Windows tells me that system knows it's the Radeon HD 7600M device, but cannot install the drivers. During the format, I deleted ALL partitions and created new ones. I remember that there was a small partition(which I left untouched during the earlier notebook format), but this time I deleted it too. Maybe this partition had some important HP data which is causing this problem now? I am also attaching a screenshot of my device... Read more

A:Windows cannot detect my graphics card

Hi: I think that HP has the wrong switchable graphics driver listed on your notebook's support page. See if this W7 AMD/Intel graphics driver works. You must only install the AMD graphics driver, which installs the drivers for both the Intel and AMD GPU's. This package provides the AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver and Catalyst Control Center for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. For notebooks with switchable graphics modes, this package includes drivers for both graphics processing units (GPUs). Switchable graphics enable users to switch between a power-saving graphics mode (normally used under battery power) and a high-performance graphics mode. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp58501-59000/sp58894.exe I don't understand the language shown in your screen shot. Can you translate to English what the other two devices that need drivers are? I'll take a guess and say that the PCI Device needs this driver... This package contains the driver that enables the Realtek Card Reader in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. The card reader enables users to read from or write to supported removable storage cards, which are typically used in digital cameras, digital music players, and cellular phones. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp61501-... Hi all.

I recently had problems with the factory installed Vista 32bit on my Sony Vaio VGN-AR51E.

I decided to install Windows 7 64bit and since then my laptop has not found my graphics card Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT.

On device manager, display adapters are shown only as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter but on Vista my graphics card was also shown.

I have tried downloading all relevant drivers etc but the Nvidia installer says no graphics hardware can be found.

I am half decent with computers but have no idea when it comes to editing the .nfi (or whatever its called) files that I have seen other posters suggest.

Can someone please confirm if my card is even compatible with my OS and what is the best route to take.

Also, I only found out that my graphics card was not in use whilst trying to play Rome Total War, and the game would not start as it said DirectX 9 is not installed (I am currently using DirectX 11). I have tried all the downloads for DirectX 9 with no avail so im focusing on the graphics card issue.

Other games, such as SimCity 4, work fine with the standard vga graphics adapter though.

For any more info required, just ask.

Much appreciated

How do I get it back?

A:Uninstalled graphics card. Windows cannot detect it now

Do not try to install it through Device Manager.

I just did mine less than an hour ago. So maybe this will help.

After reboot W7 will load but have poor resolution. Go to where the Nvidia driver is downloaded (mine was in the Download folder) double click the Nvidia driver download and follow the prompts to install.

It may show it did not install the driver but don't worry just reboot when it is finished installing or says it didn't install properly.
That is what mine did and after a reboot all was installed properly.

Also after reboot the Monitor will show in Device Manager.

Hello, I recently performed a clean install of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate onto my computer. While doing so, I had to unplug my graphics card and use the onboard video, otherwise I'd get an error about unexpected restarts.

After installing, Windows 7 doesn't detect the graphics card (the card works, but it doesn't show up under the device manager and I can't install nVidia drivers). If I use the BIOS to switch to onboard video, then that shows up on the device manager and works fine, but I use this PC for gaming so I'd prefer to use the video card.

Here's the deal,
I purchased a HP Pavilion dv9540us Entertainment Notebook PC and upgraded to Windows 7, after I got a virus and let Microsoft Techs into my laptop remotely in an effort to remove the worm and they deleted some key OS Files. So, they were kind enough to give me Windows 7 Professional & install Office 2010, but failed to inform me that upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 would render my Nvidia graphics card useless. So, here I am trying to figure out what to do and where to get the correct Drivers to get my HDMI & Other ports working again. I tried talking to HP, but to them it's a matter of national security & if your not willing to "Grea$e the wheels" they're not willing to give up the "seceret." Although, They did tell me that I will need to download a chipset driver to my HP Pavilion dv9540us that is compatible with Windows 7 and then my Nvidia graphics card will be detectible by my Device manager. Then I would need to update my Nvidia Drivers, Reboot, and I should be up and running. Sounds good, but what is the HP Driver I need? Does anyone have a link or any better input?
Because, I am about ready to Smash this thing or hunt down some HP Support guy.

It's supposed to play new games smoothly; just not at peak performance. My computer specs:

Yet my Dell performance page rates me at a base score 2.6 in desktop graphics out of 5.9. Gaming graphics are apparently at a decent 4.1 out of 5.9 yet games and definitely PC game cutscenes do not run smoothly.
This computer even plays its default chess game at a noticibly choppy rate when it only demands a recommended 2.0 base score. I tried to run the 2003 game Jedi Academy and it runs though on it and other games the cutscenes are very choppy and gameplay has a very noticable FPS jumpiness. The newest game I played was a 2006 strategy game (Empire at War, I'm using the SW games for testing because they tend not to be very demanding) and it also played choppy.
These games don't demand very much and Jedi Academy is honestly pretty ancient. There are no viruses or bugs on the computer nor is it bogged down with programs. Lastly running videos is often difficult on or off the internet. Many times the frame rate on these is reduced. The graphics card is adjusted to the medi... Read more

Hi minamfm,

Did you clean-install W7, or did you upgrade from a prior version of Windows by running the disk from that version?

What driver version have you got installed? Here are the latest WHQL versions from NVidia for the 8M series:

Greetings to everyone out there, I am new to the forum. Feel free to critique me if I do or say something wrong.

I purchases a Dell 1300 XPS around November, also u should know I keep very good care of my Laptop.

Recently (being the last month) my computer has been freezing (at least the screen) it flickers green and red, then it pixellates, then my computer crashes.

However about two weeks ago my computer flickered and pixellated, but didn't crash. My computer reinitialized my graphics card and started working. It then told me my graphics card had failed. This was great for me because up until then I really had no idea what was going wrong.

So I now know what my problem is.

Then I decided to go onto cyberspace and look around to see if anyone else had the same problem. I found, Yes! Few people did. However no one has been able to solve the problem.

I've updated my driver, rolled back my driver and have come across nothing but failure. The only thing that I've found to work is just disabling my graphics card, which is pretty lame because my computer goes into fits whenever I try to play a movie or a game.

Please if anyone has any information that would help me it would be much appreciated.

I can currently only use the standard VGA graphics adapter or else my computer will not even start-up properly, Freezes at starting windows screen. I have tried installing the forceware drivers and have also visited NVISION.
I would just like to know if there is any specific driver that i need based on my computer type.

Hi guys,

I noticed an old thread around and found it because i experienced the same issue with my nvidia card an i have tried it with a couple models different from 8400M GT and this solution worked just fine.

At a point my graphics card went berserk and from that moment on i had some vertical blue lines over the entire display.

At first I thought it was a OS related issue but after i kept reading and browsing around i noticed that most people recommended to contact Vaio support and they should work out the issue for free in about 3-5 days.

Another solution would have been to bake the entire motherboard which to be honest, i didn't really have the guts to do it

I just wanted to let you all know that this solution really worked and my Vaio has been dunning just fine for the past 4 months without any issues as well as a couple of 2 other machines i applyed this solution to.

1. Buy thermal paste
2. Take your machine apart ( only the case until you can actually reach the video card)
3. Take a hair dryer and hold it at 3cm above your card and turn it on
4. Keep it running for about 2:30 - 3 minutes
5. Make yourself a tee or a cofee and let everything cool off (this is very important because when you apply the thermal paste it is cooler and you could crack something)
6. Apply thermal paste over the video card chip
7. Reasamble your machine

After this everything should run perfectly

Below is the video i used as a reference to do this and I can vouch that everything is up a... Read more

There are diffirent models of the same series. You just have a 128-mb version. Only way to change that is to buy a new one.

nVidia GeForce 8400M 256MB

Everything worked fine on Vista Home. Yesterday i downloaded Windows 7 Professional (original) from MSDNAAC and i have same problems with graphic adapter as some members here. When i go to Display properites it is showing me that i have Standard VGA Graphics Adapter and it is having only 14MB(like when someone installs any OS that does not have drivers in their own database). At first i try to download new drivers from NVIDIA for my graphic card that are supported for Windows 7. When I try to install them after the extraction of files and start of setup an error message appears "The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit"
I am not rookie for computers and i tried to uninstall Display drivers, Windows uptade and similiar things and it wont help.
I will appreciate if someone can resolve my problem.

After upgrading a Dell Inspiron 1420 to Wdws 7 Home Premium from Vista, the screen either goes blank or freezes. After updating the Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS driver (195.62 WHQL 12/04/09), I now get a BSOD when it crashes. All other drivers appear to be updated.

Rebooting after a crash usually causes either a split screen with 2 desktops or 1 low-resolution desktop. Reinstalling Wdws 7 only lasted an hour before the problem started again. Using a prior Restore Point gets it going again but only briefly.

The problem appears to be the Nvida video driver that stops working for some reason. Attached is the Minidump zip file and System Data files.

Thanks for your help.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 that was misbehaving; on start-up, the monitor appeared "dazzled". Disabling the GeForce 8400M GS allows it to start and function with what I assume is the less-capable but at least functional built-in video. I believe that the GeForce chipset has failed and I'm thinking of replacing the motherboard, which I understand is the only way to cope with the failed GeForce video "card".

How can I verify my diagnosis? I ran the Dell diagnostics from their site, but with this device disabled I don't think it gets tested. I'd like to know for sure that this is the only way to proceed before I buy a new mobo.

I ran System Recovery and Start-up Repair multiple times from the hard drive and from the Win 7 DVD. I've installed the newest GeForce drivers and rolled the driver back to a version from September, 2013, with the same result. These steps have persuaded me the problem is in the HW, but I'd appreciate some reassurance. Maybe I'm putting too much into the reports about the GeForce chip problems and lawsuit for 1420 owners (too late for me).

If I do replace the mobo, I'm inclined to buy one that uses the Intel video chipset instead of the GeForce...to preclude the same problem. Or am I just trading a known GeForce problem for Intel problems that may be worse?

Thanks!

I have a HP Pavilion dv9934ca notebook with windows 7 and a Nvidia Geforce 8400m GS. Tonight the screen changed into a bunch of lines of different colors. I restarted and right before the login page it would go back to the screen with the colors. I went into safe mode and everything worked so i uninstalled my display adapter in the device manager and rebooted and windows worked but looks like crap. Windows then automatically downloaded and installed the update for the 8400m GS. So i rebooted and it went back to that colored screen. So I went back into safe mode and uninstalled the adapter again and downloaded the driver from Nvidias website and when I rebooted again i got the same screen. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I'm starting to think the 8400m is toast.
Thanks.

I have had a couple of taskbar messages now to tell me the GPU has crashed and fixed itself, previously i had thought it was because i was running 3D games in a window, the problem shows itself as random colour blocks on the desktop and then the whole display flashing, like the computer is about to go into a UAC prompt, culminating with the message on the taskbar regarding the GPU. but now it is happening just with DreamScene running, so im all excited 'cause woo hoo, fiinally Vista is doing something other than just working right anytime all the time. I am using Vista Ultimate with SP1 32bit on my dv6519tx laptop, the laptop had Vista home premium originally, and I have the latest Nvidia driver from HP which is driver 7.15.11.7432. I have downloaded the latest Nvidia driver from their website, but as this isnt specifically a mobile 'M' driver, i havent yet installed it. Has this happened to anyone else?

Hi.

I've been looking for the last while for a laptop and graphics is one of my main concerns. Before I start, I want to make it clear that I'm not looking for really high graphics quality because I'm limited by budget, and on laptop you can't upgrade above the two mentioned cards.

So basically I had been thinking about getting a Dell Vostro 1510 with Geforce 8400m GS, but just recently saw the Dell studio 15 with ATI Radeon HD 3450. It would cost me about 65 more to get studio atm, but will also get extra 90Gb Hard disk space, and a 2.1 GHz core2duo over the vostros 1.83 GHz.

In terms of performance, I basically want to know, is the Radeon better than the 8400? Im not looking to play the newest games like crysis etc but do want to play some like call of duty 4, which i know works on the 8400.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
