How to re-show the hidden title bar and menu bar of TaskManager?

Q: How to re-show the hidden title bar and menu bar of TaskManager?

Accidentially I pressed some unknown key combination/sequence and the result was that the
title bar and the menu bar of the well known built-in Task Manager was suddenly hidden.

Only the processes are shown in window. I cannot even switch to the other tabs.

With which key can I tell Win 7 to re-show title bar and menu bar?

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Add “Show / Hide Hidden Files” Option in Desktop and Explorer Context Menu under Windows XP, Vista and 7 - Tweaking with Vishal

He creates a VB script to add the context menu option, but I don't like how he uses the F5 key to refresh and I think the menu option should be content aware like the Undo-Redo menu option. Here's my concept and this site explains more about refreshing without the F5 key but I don't know much about scripting.

Hi Seven Forums,

I am looking for a solution to the following. Some of my files and folders are hidden (and I would like to keep them hidden). I can view these in Explorer windows/Navigation Panes because I have elected to Show Hidden Files and Folders through Windows. However, I cannot see these files in my cascading Classic Shell Start Menu, nor in any other types of cascading menus, including stock Windows taskbar toolbars (e.g. right click taskbar > Toolbars > Desktop).

How can I view hidden files and folders in fly-out menus in addition to Explorer windows?

Thank you for your kind support!

A:Show Hidden Files and Folders in Cascading Menu

I think thst is a price you will pay for using the Classic shell options. That is just obeying the hidden file instruction. If you want to show the files that are now hidden then you will have to "un hide" them. I don't think you will be able to pick and choose where they should appear! Who are you trying to hide them from anyway?

I made the jump to Win 7 and finally I am leaving Vista behind (so to speak, since it is still vista).

I like the new OS much better and my old vista got very clunky with age. I am a web developer and I run multiple power applications so I have several rigs, all of them maxed out on RAM and available disk space.

Now that I have a shiny new OS I'd like to know if there is a shortcut I could create for one of the things that has been bugging me about all versions of Windows:

In the course of my day, I often need to visit the "Hidden" files in my computer. Normally, I have to go to Win Expl. and choose "display hidden files".
It's not a strenuous task, but I would much rather have a single button or menu item to do the same task. Can it be that hard to do?

The reason is that I often have to customize system files (mostly program files) and usually I keep the hidden files visible by default. If I could have an accessible switch to turn it on and off at will that did not require 4 steps to accomplish it would be certainly nicer. Otherwise I forget and I have to look at all the ugly files on my system.

Where should I look for such a functionality?

hello! and thanks in advance...

somehow the toolbar is missing in ie, therefor I cannot get to tools/internet options and access anything, it won't let me right-click in ie at all, and does nothing when I click on hyperlinks and try to download anything... also at the bottom where I usually see when pop-ups are blocked I see the symbol for them when being blocked but I can't click on it to change settings like I normally would.. and only get a blank white box when I right click on the popup symbol.

Also, on the desktop when I try to right click the ie icon I get nothing.
so I tried to access it through control panel and I get nothing also.. but I sometimes see a flash of a box that quickly goes away when clicking on it repeatedly.

pleaseee help.. it's so irritating!
I'm new at this so I don't know much. thanks!

I'm helping a friend who had a malware infection, which has now apparently been eradicated. Vista Home Premium SP2 32bit. I don't know if the problems it still has are a result of the malware, or if they were preexisting on my friend's computer. But I suspect they were used by the malware to protect itself.

*The taskbar won't unlock, even temporarily (in contrast to the folder properties issue mentioned below).
*I can't show hidden files/extensions, even temporarily.
*Folder properties can't be altered permanently, e.g. the user documents folder is always displayed as "Pictures and Videos" type instead of "All Items" ; can't set to use Windows Classic folders, show full path in Title Bar, etc. These items CAN be altered temporarily, but the previous settings always revert on rebooting.)
*Context menu items such as new folder, new text document are not present.
*Deleted files do not show up in the recycle bin.
*No matter which browser (FF or MSIE) is set as default, when the default browser is reopened it always states to this effect: "This is not the default browser. Would you like to make it the default browser?"

These did not return to normal after doing a system restore to 3 weeks before the time the malware became apparent.

I tried IE8. This seemed to interfere with Mcafee. When I opened the security centre there was only a plain white box.
Couldn't 'uninstall' IE8 so I restored to before IE8.
This rectified the Mcafee problem but now IE7 seems corrupt.
There is no text in the title bar. The menu bar (favourite, tools etc is missing. Right clight on the title bar offers only restore, close etc.
Downloading is not working too well. There is no 'pop up blocked' menu displayed to allow downloads.
It's running on Xp home.
Everything was fine until I tried IE8 and then restored.
Nearly forgot to mention that the tabs are missing too!

Any ideas????

A:ie7 menu bar missing, no title in title bar

This MAY NOT be your exact problem, but....

IE7 uses Vista display criteria. Normally the Menu seems not to be there.

What they (idiots at Microsoft) did is replace the Menubar with a Context Menu. Right-click the Titlebar and you should see your Menu listing, and if you select View, you can check Classic Menubar(?) and get the Menubar back.

The other problems MAY be solved by resetting your Internet Options, especially the Advanced tab.

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

A:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Any suggestions

show and hide files is a profile specific key and therefore can be modified by user accounts. if you would like to change the default, navigate to key:
HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\advanced\folder\hidden and \hidefileext
there are keys in there that set default behaviors.

Just recently I noticed that the CPU is going all the time (The bottom of the laptop is very hot to the touch; and I can hear the CPU fan constantly going). Even when I get the CPU usage down < 5%, I can still hear it. Also, when I disconnect it from the outlet; the battery drains FAST. In the past it the laptop quiets down and cools off if left idle for awhile, so this is something that is happening recently.

After noticing it, I ran a scan with MBAM - it found and removed a few Malware.Trace registry keys but that didn't seem to help.

Anyway, thanks to everyone in advance for all your help (It really is appreciated)

Running Winaso registry cleaner some time ago revealed 500 odd registry errors that were fixed and a subsequent run some time later revealed few problems. Running Winaso again yesterday discovered hundreds of errors again.

Welcome to the forum.

The "Documents and settings" folder has been obsolete since Vista. You should be using the "Users" folder". The "Documents and settings" folder is just a link maintained for compatibility with old software. Windows Explorer will never give you access by this route no matter what you do.

The "System Volume information" folder has special protection, even from an admin account, and should not be accessed unless you really understand what you are doing.

Registry cleaners are more trouble than they are worth and should be avoided. The validity of the errors found is often questionable. Many will find errors after a clean install. Others will find many errors and supposedly correct them but after another scan it will find the same errors. They have numerous pother problems as well.

I hope someone can help and many many thanks in advance.

I'm running XP.

The symptoms:

Performance extremely hampered, often to the point of virtual gridlock.

Constant pop-ups (chiefly to fake Antivirus 2008 site).

VIRUS ALERT! displayed at bottom right in place of clock.

Desktop internet shortcuts to various other bogus software.

IE is constantly hijacked - can just about do a Yahoo!/Google search but clicking on a link redirects me to junk sites (including pharmacy/'meet-a-friend' types). Also displays a toolbar which is named as random letters (which change). IE loads onto a bogus anti-spyware site as its default homepage now.

C & D drives are hidden and inaccessible unless in safe mode.

Ditto for registry edit and taskmanager.

As for the 5 steps, couldn't find anything suspect in Add/Remove programs. The Panda scan couldn't be done - kept telling me to click the yellow bar to accept ActiveX download, the yellow bar would not display. Almost as if this bug is actively resisting any attempts to stop it.Step 3 seemed okay.

I couldn't update my OS because of the bug hijacking IE. Normally I thought my laptop did this automatically - and an automatic update warning keeps flashing now, however when I click to activate there is an error and it isn't completed.

Because of IE problems I'm having to transfer any suggested downloads from my dad's laptop by using my iPod as a USB device. Combined with the performance issues this is beco... Read more

some days ago, when analyzing another problem, i stumbled upon a fatal error in the CPU performance display in the Microsoft task manager. I wrote a little bit about this problem in the following post.

In summary: for me, the task manager as well as the resource monitor and the performance monitor do not show the correct CPU utilization.

Here is an example.

I start a test and the CPU display of core 0 climbs to 100% in Task Manager.

The Resource Monitor shows the same thing.

Only the performance monitor shows the correct load, but the display it "inconsistent".

The processor load is normally shown up to max. 100%, but my core 0 run according to the performance monitoring with up to 120%. ??

The Process Explorer shows the correct utilization of my core 0.

HWiNFO also shows the load correctly.

I suddenly had the following apprehension.
If you cannot correctly measure the utilization of a system, so it's not possible to control its performance properly. ??

So I immediately opened a support ticket at Microsoft by telephone and then described the problem accordingly by email.

A few hours later I received an email with the following text. "Dear Mr. Fuchs, your support case has been closed."

That can not be true. ?
Dear Microsoft, determining and displaying the CPU loa... Read more

i ran some pretty complicated malware-removal programs since my PC (on the office network) was showing loads of trojans and other malware. in the order of running, i ran Malwarebytes, MGTools, Combofix with the windows recovery option. Then, on not having found anything substantial, I uninstalled Combofix with the /u optiom and deleted C:Combofix and later, proceeded to delete C:MGTools.

Post this, I ran SuperANTIspyware.Found some malware by the last named. I cleaned up the PC of all the crap and then, did a reboot.

The PC allows me to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del log in, and once I hit Return after entering the password, it just shows me the blue background to the desktop - No items, no menus.

Same thing happens in safe mode.

Ran a SFC Scannow. Gave it the original boot disk. Rebooted after SFC. Again, the system wont move beyond the blue screen. Later, I discovered a solution.

1. I do a Ctrl Alt Del
2. go to File
3. go to New Task (Run)
4. Type explorer.exe

and everything is alright.

But on trying to reboot, the blue screen is a constant.

Tried System Restore post this - doesnt allow me to go to Yesterdays date. Allows me only to go back to four hours prior to now.

When SFC Scannnow did not help me, what will?

I guess this is best explained with images, so here's what I want. (If possible of course).

So in this screenshot you can see my Start Menu, notice that some of this icons (Steam, Curse Client and Origin) have an arrow next to them? When you hover, or click, with the mouse the Task menu opens up.
What I want is to add an icon of Microsoft Office and make it so that the arrow is there too (just like Steam, Origin and Curse Client) and make it so that when I click or hover the Task menu will appear, and on the list will be MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, etc
I would like to know if it's at all possible and if so how can I do it?

Any help would be appreciated.

When you click "Pin To Start" in the options menu in Edge, where are those pins stored?
How do I change their Label/title and icon?

I guess it depends on the site; most sites will generate a favicon, if not, the name will still be on the tile(1) as small as medium, if the tile is small it should show a mouse hover tip(2).
The application shortcuts are of the XAML type and can't be altered or edited.

Hey Guys, I cannot find a soultion to this problem. I was using my desktop like normal then an error came up saying that there was a hdd failure, and that i needed to scan for errors. all my files disappeared and only this error would come up. There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.

When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.

Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.

so then when i click on my second internal drive after the reinstall of the new OS it shows empty i have to go in and show hidden files and folders.. now they show again transparent. also i plug in my external to get the recent back up and all those files are still transparent when i move them to my desktop that is freshly OS installed they are still grey/transparent and i have to keep the show hidden files and folders to view them.. so its all my music, pics, documents etc th... On startup and for three minutes at the most, the show hidden icons button is giving me an odd glitch upon being clicked.

If you don't know what I mean by 'show hidden icons button' it's the furthest left button on the taskbar in this picture below.

Basically, whenever I click that button from anywhere up to 3 minutes after startup, the icons start flickering and they are highlighted in a cycle to the left and the tray can't be opened. The problem seems to also be occurring in other situations as well such as when I click the button next to shutdown in the start menu in order to expand the options to 'restart' and 'sleep' among other things. These options are rapidly cycled through making it impossible to click anything. Lastly, I noticed that if I try to left-click and drag something like a web page or the steam page on my desktop, the page immediately begins moving to the left across the screen.

Again, all of this only happens for about 3 minutes after startup at the most and then everything operates as it should. This just began happening again (it happened several months ago for a short period of time and then stopped) and I haven't made any changes to windows.

Very strange.
Try this.
Right tick on Desktop and select View. Then make sure that Auto Arrange and Align icons to Grid are NOT checked.

I can't remember what puts the little red X on the flag.

I just ran the Show-Hidden application that revealed I have 338 hidden items found on C drive and 4 found on D drive.
How on earth do I go about deciphering all of this and making sense of anything legitimate and .. not so legitimate, if any, without posting the results here? Irk! help, please?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "ran the Show-Hidden application"? Hidden files and folders are quite common and, by itself, their presence is not indicative of anything amiss.

Process Explorer tells me there's this virus hiding in a certain directory I can't seem to find no matter what I do. I've enabled the "show hidden files" option but it's just not there.

What should I do?

A:Hidden directories won't show

Process Explorer lists running processes. It does not identify things as viruses.

I am running XP on a Toshiba and use Norton Internet Security 2008. I had set it to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" in Folder Options, in Control Panel. Inexplicably, that setting changed by itself and, now, when I manually click on "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and then "Apply", the change does not happen and I cannot view some of my folders (i.e. "Local") . Moreover, my system will not allow itself to be restored to an earlier point in time under System Restore.

I urgently need advice how I can get "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and "System Restore" working again!

A:Show Hidden Files

kzitil, For the hidden files problem go to the link below and scroll down to line 155 (left column) and right click on "Enable/Disable Show Hidden Files/Folders", choose Save Target As and save it somewhere you can easily find it. Double click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

Have you tried doing a System Restore in the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP?

I don't think so, but maybe.

A shortcut on your desktop to folder options would be just as easy.

As an administrator, I thought I was telling Windows to allow me to show hidden files for all files under a given user.  Turned out I made them hidden.
How do I view hidden files.  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files#show-hidden-files=windows-7 doesn't seem to be correct as I do not even see the typical "Windows" start icon.
The user has done nothing, and I have all their "my docs" backed up.  Should I just remove the user (and presumably the files will be removed) and start over?

A:Show hidden files

Hi again Notion
There's a difference between hidden files and system files. To view hidden files, you need to check Show hidden files, folders and drives in the Folder Options. From there, if you want to see the system files you need to unchecked Hide protected operating system files (recommended). Then you'll see every files and folders on your system.

A:Show hidden files

Here is a slick trick

Go to your start menu and click on Help and Support
In the search type " show hidden files" and hit enter.

#2 in the list is Display Hidden files and folders

The screen on the right tells you where to find and modify this information. Its the same place for showing system files.
