Q: Unable to access certain sites; unable to download various upgrades...

Hello,

Recently my computer has been progressively getting worse, or so it seems. At first all that I was limited on was going to a handful of sites that I tried (Facebook, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc...). Currently, I am having difficulties getting on more and more sites, sites that I had been recently able to get on. In my attempts to take care of the problem on my own I downloaded Malwarebytes, IObit Malwarefighter, and ran recovery manager to set my computer back to factory condition. I knew because I did the recovery that it was going to most likely not work so I saved files and documents I wanted to save on a thumb-drive. Malwarebytes and IObit claim to have found nothing but I can't seem to upgrade Malwarebytes as the program crashes when it scans for an update. Since I recovered my computer I cannot watch anything on Netflix (on any browser), and I still can't access any of the websites I was unable to. I went onto Wikihow and tried to reset my "hosts" file but it seems whatever I did could have just been more damaging than helpful, I am not quite sure. I am running Windows 7 as an operating system on an HP computer. I have looked at threads you have done or solved in the past and some of the solutions that worked for other posters did nothing to cure my problem. Thank you for reviewing my issue and if I need to post any more information to get things rolling just let me know.

Nathaniel

Preferred Solution: Unable to access certain sites; unable to download various upgrades...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am not able to download several XP pro upgrades. I also am getting spyware and malware internet msgs indicating that I have a virus on my computer. Now I have posted my HijackThis Log for this issue. I have not been able to download the upgrades for months now. I believe if I was able to download the upgrades this may have prevented me from getting the virus.

A:Unable To Download Xp Upgrades

If you have a HJT file posted you should not make any changes to your system as this can skew the results of the log that you have already filed.

Can anyone help me????

I can't download any software upgrades over the net.

When I select download I get the next page of Internet explorer as a blank page except for a box in the top left hand corner which contains a small square, circle and triangle.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi there,

I originally posted on the HJT forum but "pancake" found my computer to be relatively clean. I did everything suggested and still can't download new software. I'm not sure if you are able to see that thread but this was my original email:

Hello,
First let me say I am no techy and that's why I am here... I hope I can explain this properly for you. I am having problems downloading new software, programs or upgrades. The error I keep getting, is that my system is failing to find C:/program files/common files... I started by trying to upgrade my itunes software and noticed that it might be because it requires service pack 4 and I only have 2. So I went to load the microsoft updates and it loaded a few things but failed on the sp4 and a security update. It prompted me to download Internet Explorer 7 which I thought I already had, but I thought maybe there was a problem with it so I proceeded. It removes the current version and then you have to restart. At this point it failed to initialize, "0x0000005" and I had no more internet! Luckily I had Opera installed, figured out how to do a system restore so I did that but now I am back to the original problem. I ran spyware doctor as it was already downloaded on my system but it is asking me to register before it cleans up the 120 infections it found!!! Some high severity, some elevated but majority low. Before doing that I thought I would come here and see if I had any other options. I can't down... Read more

if it dose then incert the cd /disk , the scan will resume

minimize the cd/disk splash screen so you can see the progress

when done remove the cd/disk

OS is Windows XP. The computer is 6 years old & have never had problems. Recently I'm unable to access internet Explorer. The white page appears and the "connecting" message...and there it stays. Also, I'm unable to download .net versions 2.0 through 3.5, which appears to prevent me from downloading other programs. One tech tried to assist me remotely & ultimately suggested seeking help from a Windows specialist--thus my finding tech Suppor Guy--great!! --Dutch--

Hi there

Would really appreciate some help with this as it's driving me mad! A friend of mine new to computers recently managed to get the annoying Spyaxe virus on his computer. I got it off ok for him using various programs such as ad-aware etc. and everything is all back to normal and running fine.

Now (a week later) there is the problem that the internet is all running fine however he is unable to connect to certain sites/servers. I cannot work out what is wrong as it views all sites fine but when I click on a specific link, for example to download a PDF file a new screen opens up but just remains blank with the hourglass timer showing. If I click stop on the browser, the adddress it is trying to connect to shows in the address bar and then if you hit the enter key it goes to the address perfectly and the PDF file can be seen immediately.

Also, when you go to a radio station website and click to listen the same happens and a new blank screen opens but no connection to the audio is made. I cannot do the same here as with the PDF files as the screen disappears.

All the relevant software is installed to hear radio and it all worked perfectly until when I removed the adware I think. Is it something to do with the security settings? Have checked them and cannot see anything wrong or any reason to block these kind of files. It seems the computer has a problem with redirects to certain sources on the internet.

Would really appreciate some help on this

I have been unable to access ftp sites for a while now, maybe since the SP2 upgrade on XP Professional.

I am using IE 6, all the latest patches have been applied. I have also attempted to reinstall IE to no success.

I get this following error message:

"Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access this folder.

Details:
A connection with the server could not be established."

I have no problems using the command prompt to access ftp sites nor some ftp clients, but i find ie more convienient (or did).

I do not have a personal firewall blocking port 21. I have Folder View active and do not have "Use Passive FTP" set.

I get this problem even accessing my own Windows 2000 IIS server internally. I also get this problem with FTP sites not requiring usernames and passwords.

This has been winding me up for a while now so i would really appreciate some help.

A:Unable to access FTP Sites.

I may be completely wrong here, but this sounds like a firewall issue, and as I understand it setting ftp to Passive makes it more likely to pass through a firewall, so I suggest you tick that option and see what happens.

I seem to remember also that there are settings on the windows firewall - which sort of throws itself at you whether you like it or not with XP SP2 which may make a difference as well?

My computer is unable to access certain sites. I think it's a problem with my computer but I'm not sure what because other computers that belong to the same network can access the site just fine, and I know these sites are fairly reliable and I haven't been able to access them (yahoo, ebay...). I'm clueless as to what to do! It's usually not the whole site just certain aspects such as when I login to check my mail it says (unable to find login.yahoo.com, for ebay its unable to find singin.ebay.com). I tried in multiple browsers, to no avail. Please help!

Hi all,

Some clients using Internet Explorer are unable to access certain websites while others on the LAN can. What steps to take to try to remedy issue?

Clients in question use Win 7 or Win 10 try to access a secure https site but are unable to.

I checked side-by-side under Internet Options >>
Advanced tab and settings are the same.

I also checked zone options under Security tab and see that they are both at the same level at default settings.

Under Content tab, I tried Clear SSL slate.

In some instances, I've Delete browsing history as well as under Advanced tab
Reset and did a restart.

All of this with no success only to sometimes be able to use Chrome or Firefox with success.

Can someone advise how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks,

Jason

Hi there. I hope you guys can help me out here. I have a Philips Multimedia computer. I don't understand computers at all. I have Windows XP. My computer is about 8 months old.

My problem is this: up until 4/5 months ago I was able to access certain websites which I simply cannot access now. I don't recall changing any settings but I must have. One website is www.chathouse.com. When I try to log onto it, a screen comes up offerring me options such as 'refreshing', or going to 'control panel' and changing all sorts of settings. There are a few other websites which I was able to access but am unable to now.

I've tried a few settings changes but seem to have complicated the problem even further. Friends of mine are still able to access these sites but I can't.

Apologies for the wording but I am a complete computer loser. I just want to access the sites I was able to a few months ago.

Any thoughts?

hi, welcome to TSG.

Download hijack this from the link below.
IMPORTANT! Move Hijack this from the Temp folder or from the Desktop to it's own folder!

Make a new folder in C:\ and call it Hijack this, and Save hijack this to
this folder so that it runs properly and can make back ups. Click scan,
then save the log and post it here so we can take a look at it for you.
Don't click fix on anything in hijack this as most of the files are
legitimate.

what activity I may have been engaged in at the time; however,
no hardware installs or major program installs/driver changes occured.
- can still access Windows Update, PocetPC support site, Hotmail but urls such as Windows

- prior to this, complete normal access.
- as in prior thread with similar problem, History/Cashe had been cleared.
I have the same access problem using IE6, Mozilla 1.3b, Opera 7
NetCaptor, NeoPlanet.
I am connected using 10/100 NIC Cable on Earthlink/AttComcast w/ Motorola SB4200 External modem.
ZoneAlarmPro updated/installed.
I am able to access these sites away from my primary computer within the same zip/area code location using business system.
About two weeks prior to this phenomena I was forced to re-install WinXP - successfully- but installation forced install into C:\
partition of my two partition C: D: HDD. Before re-install, Windows
resided in the D: partition. All components/software seemed to
function appropriately after re-install/

I'm having problems with Internet Explorer 6. Don't know if it's due to missing or corrupted files, but I only have access to most sites after clicking refresh, once, twice or more. Also, when I finally get access, some pictures aren't displayed. At the first try, there's the classic message, "the page can't be displayed". Sometimes, even the refresh doesn't work. Open up IE. go to tools, internet options.
click on connection tab, then make sure you have it set to " never dial a connection " then click on LAN settings button at bottom.
Make sure you do NOT have any check marks in this window at all.
Click on OK, OK and OK.
Close your IE window.
Open up a new one and you should be able to access the internet again.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

I am able to access any site on the Internet except the secured sites (banking sites, credit cards, etc). In this example, I have tried to access the Bank of America website. I am using Google Chrome and IE 8 and the message that I get is:

This webpage is not available.

The webpage at https://www.bankofamerica.com/index.jsp might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

This message is what I get from all of the secured sites. It seems that its any site that begins with "https://".

I've tried running the Malware Bytes, Spybot S&D, etc and they found some, which I removed or fixed. Still no luck. I also did the "regsvr dll" changes that I found from the previous "Unable to Access Secured Sites" and still no luck. I've checked my Internet Options and also followed the steps to "fix" the problem (from another message board). Again, no luck. I've even tried restoring the point to a time when I last used a secured site. Again, no luck.

I'm desparate and was wondering if there is anyone that may be able to help me so that I can regain access to the secured sites. Please help!

Have you ever been able to access secure sites ? If so, did something happen just before it stopped working ? New router ? New hardware ? New software ?

Do you have a router ?

Have you tried resetting Internet Explorer back to factory default ?

Umm, check your Services. Maybe the malware disabled something necessary to run encrypted stuff. Are you currently using Selective Startup (msconfig) ?

To restore access to security web sites on an infected machine I followed these steps:
Click Start > Run.
In the Run box, type the following: cmd
Click OK.
Type the following and then press Enter. cd..
Repeat the previous step until you get to the root level, or C:\>. Note that if your root drive is not C, the letter will be different.
At C:\> type the following: net stop dnscache
Press Enter. This disables the domain blocking feature of Conficker and you should now be able to reach security Web sites.

Then used the conficker removal tool from here: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2009-011316-0247-99

Hi All,
The answer for this is probably staring me in the face, but I'm on a proper head scratcher here so thought probably best to ask around!
We have a Server 2003 R2 SP2 terminal server with IE8 on it. We're having a wierd issue where we can't access intranet sites via their netbios names (ie intranet01). When we try it gives a HTTP 401.2 error (You are not authorised to via this page).
We can however access the pages if we chuck the dns/domain info at the end (ie intranet01.domain.net), however then it prompts us for credentials.
If we go into IE and reset the zone settings it all just works perfectly, re-apply group policy and back to square one, so definitely looks like a GPO setting.
Does anyone know which settings in the Intranet Zone could cause this wierd behaviour?
To make it more interesting apparently we have carbon copies of the same GPOs applied to other OUs with TSs in them and they don't have the same problem...
Any help appreciated!
Cheers

I have been using a Pentium 4 computer running Window XP home edition for the last 4 years without any problem. Norton Internet Security 2002 came installed and I have kept it up-to-date by annual subscritption.

I relocated to this new housing area in April 2005 and was without internet access for the last 9 months. Then telephone network became available and I had broadband (streamyx) installed on 31Dec.2005. (Before my relocation, I was using dial up connection.) Since then, I have been unable to access any https sites. Each time I tried to access a secure connection site, a window with 'This page cannot be displayed' appeared. The service provider was unbale to solve my problem.

I also downloaded Skype from the net, and was unable to log in. Skype suggested that it could be my Firewall. I had never bothered about Firewall before. Anyway, I checked Windows Firewall and found that it was not running. Then I went to Norton Personal Firewall, but was not allowed access to any button at all. It insisted on a 'supervisor'. I am the only user and administrator of this computer and had never configured the firewall. I do not know where the 'supervisor' came from. Finally I tried to uninstall it, but was also not allowed because I was not the 'supervisor'! Is there any way out of this predicament? Thank you.

A:Unable to access https sites!

Perhaps I have not made myself clear. I was without internet connection for 9 months and so the Norton Internet Security (including Norton Virus) was not updated for that period.
The technician who installed the broadband (streamyx) for me went to a few websites and downloaded Google Earth and Skype before I could liveupdate Norton. Could my Norton Firewall be locked up by any virus that crept in during this short period? I ran a scan after that but there was no virus found. I am literally locked out of my own 'home'! I can't even access my yahoo email!
Can someone please tell me how to 'unlock' the firewall settings? Thank you.

Hi all

I have recently come across 2 computers in the Blanchard Ok. area using pioneer DSL both windows vista and the other windows xp. These 2 computers are in 2 different housholds. Anyway my problem is that neither of them can connect to certain web sites here are a few:

msn.com
myspace.com
windows update site

it just says connecting then it times out. I have checked the hosts file, reset the internet explorer settings, tried other browsers, turned off firewall, disabled spyware and virus, turned off windows defender. The antivirus program is pc cillin.

I thaught it might be an issue with Vista and Pioneer dsl but I just had the same issue with an xp machine. I don't know what i'm missing.

If anybody knows of any known issues or have any tips that would be great.

Oh ya and I tried contacting Pioneer dsl and they were no help.

Thanks

I have a number of financial sites (banks, credit cards etc) bookmarked where I obviously have to log in.
Occasionally these display "Page cannot be displayed"; it happens to all of them at the same time as I can access any other internet site. I presume the problem is to do with security settings on my PC ( I have NIS 2004).
The problem is solved by doing a System Restore but clearly something is causing this error.
It occurs intermittently and I have not changed any settings before it happens.
Any suggestions please?

Wife's computer: HP laptop running Windows 7 with latest version of Internet Explorer used at home for personal purposes.

Problem: When she attempts to log in to her bank and some other web sites requiring passwords and user IDs, she is unable to do so. Using IE, she receives the following error message after over ten minutes of waiting: ''Windows received an HTTP error #403 (forbidden) from detected cm.netteller.com.'' Using other browsers (Firefox & Chrome) the page never loads and no error messages are generated.

I checked on line and saw two potential solutions, but neither seems to apply. One was to search for Inetmgr through the Windows search function. No results were shown for that search. A second solution was to uninstall Microsoft Office Live Add-in 1.3, but a search for that also came up empty (probably because she does not have Office installed).

Would appreciate some advise that someone not technically trained can follow.

A couple of weeks ago I started having a problem with my browser: When I would click on a link I searched for on google, I would be redirected to a different site, then I have to close the tab and try multiple times to get it to work. Not only that, sometimes I get popups, which is strange for me, since I never get any with Adblock plus(I'm using Firefox, by the way). The popups rarely are another website, most of the time they will load google, strangely enough. My 1st thought was some sort of adware, so I scanned my computer with virtually everything I could think of: Spybots, Ad-Aware, AVG, Malwarebytes, A-squared, Superantispyware, Avast...I probably even forgot some of the programs too, that's just an idea of what I have tried already. After a day or so, the problem seemed to get worse, rendering some websites unloadable; no matter how many times I try, the website will not load, and I will see this "google-analytics" that is trying to load.If that wasn't enough, now all the computers in my wireless network have inherited this problem. I have run out of ideas by this point, so anything is worth trying and any help will be appreciated. I'm new to this forum. I have a Dell vostro 1500 which came with AVG anti virus plus firewall. Everything was going great for about an year and about 3 weeks ago my AVG gave a message 'Connection to update server failed'. I thought it was because of internet but from then on my AVG started giving me the same message again and again. In addition to this whenever i try to access an anti virus website or microsoft updates website i'm getting a page cannot be displayed message.I can access all other websites normally. When i tried to ping avg.com , i got 'ping could not find host avg.com please check the name and try again' message. But i can ping the ip address of avg.com. I'm confused and i'm not sure what is causing this. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot in Advance,

Jay.

If you cannot use the Internet or download any programs, try downloading from another computer (family member, friend, etc). Save to a flash (usb, pen, thumb, jump) drive or CD, transfer to the infected machine, then install and run the program. If you cannot copy files to your usb drive, make sure its not "Write Protected". Some flash drives have a switch on the side which could have accidentally been moved to write protect. Please download hosts.zip and save it to your Desktop.Extract (unzip) the file to its own folder C:\hosts. (click here if you're not sure how to do this. Vista users refer to this link.) Open up the hosts folder and double-click on the mvps.bat file. The script will rename your present HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP and copy the new HOSTS file to the correct location on your system. You can read more about what we are doing in Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File.Vista users be sure to read Updating the HOSTS file in Windows Vista.Install Instructions with screenshots for the MVPS HOSTS File if you need them.Note: You may have to overwrite the hosts file in "Safe Mode" if you get "an access denied message" when trying to do it in normal mode. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. alternate download linkDouble-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.Click the Empty Selected button. If you use Firefox browser click Firefox... This problem has recently and suddenly appeared. Every site I try to access that has anything to do with payments or options to buy something, just won't load. I keep getting the IE error message "Cannot find server or DNS Error

It has prevented me from going to "myebay.com", an attempt to purchase tickets on Ticketmaster, make a bid on bidz.com, and others of that ilk.

Open the HOSTS file and post the entire contents.
Start > run > notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Note: The default drive letter in most cases is "c:", if you have a dual boot system or a different
drive letter assigned to your OS drive then change the command accordingly.

Hi

I'm new to this site, apologies if I've post in the wrong section!

I think I maybe infected with some kind of virus/malware as I have tried to go to AVG, Avast websites etc, but I am never able to do so:

Message:

Server not available:
Firefox can't find the server at free.avg.com. (similar happens in Internet explorer).

At first I tried clearing the cache, flushing dns but this had no effect. I then tried to access the sites from another computer and the sites loaded fine. I then downloaded the free software and transferred to the infected computer, but every time I try to run the .exe they suddenly stop running - with no warning or error message. This also happens in safe mode.

I managed to download hijackthis software while in safe mode and have run the scan and saved the log, but wanted to post here before resorting to that.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Tom
