How to remove the 'shiny' effect of the title bar?

Q: How to remove the 'shiny' effect of the title bar?

I want to remove the 'shininess' that you see on the title bar so it is all one color. See this image:

Help is appreciated.

Preferred Solution: How to remove the 'shiny' effect of the title bar?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The feature you are referring to is called Aero Desktop. To turn it off, right-click on the Desktop and choosing Personalize and then ?Window Color and Appearance?

You should see the ?Enable transparency? checkbox in this screen, which works immediately

Just found out how to get rid of the shiny stripe effect on the taskbar which i think personally are ugly and doesn’t add any kind of 3 dimensional effect to the bar. if you like a minimal desktop and want to remove the stripes open regedit and navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software\microsoft\Windows\DWM and double ckick on ColorizationGlassReflectionIntensity and change the value to something lower, I use 1 close regedit and log off and back on to take effect.

I have a double (dual) boot in my HD which means two OS in two partitions, one for Win2000 and another one for Windows XP Pro and I boot through the OS menu that comes out in the beginning. The system works properly but my problem was the Win XP that I wanted to upgrade so I used a WinXP new version and tried to upgrade my WinXP included in the boot OS menu. I booted in the XP and from inside XP (the one that had to be upgraded) I used the new version of XP to install (upgrade) it. I just wanted to upgrade the already installed XP to its newer version so when the installation began and the system rebooted for the first time in order to continue its installation, I found out that in the boot OS menu there were three titles instead of two I had before such as:
1. Wndows XP Professional
2. Windows 2000
and now
3. Windows XP Professional Setup (this means that the system wasn't going to be installed over the 1 choise [Win XP Proo]???

I immediately stopped the installation by rebooting the system.
Then I started again and the system was working properly so I entered the Win2000 and I found out that a new directory was added in the C: that came out probably from the procedure of the upgrade's installation. I immediately deleted it and I rebooted the system again.

All I have to say is that the system works properly with no problems at all BUT my problem is how to delete the third title of the OS menu that always appears as mentioned above in number 3. When you ... Read more

I've wanted to do this for a while, but I can't seem to find any information about it on Google. From what I understand, there are no settings to do this (e.g. by disabling visual effects) and it would require the modification of some system file. I'm alright with doing this, but I don't know which file it is I need to modify. Any help would be great.

A:Can I remove the fade effect between the login screen and the desktop?

Why would you want to do this. Where is the problem ??

A PC is using the "fade-in" effect for the start menu and I wanted to get rid of that, so I followed the instructions on that page: http://www.theeldergeek.com/eliminate_fade_effect_in_xp_menus.htm

It worked just fine, but only works for the currently logged in user. As soon as I switch accounts on the same machine, the problem comes back.

I made some research but couldn't find a solution, does anyone know if it's possible at all to disable the start menu fade-in effect for all (current and future) users at once, in other words change the default setting?

If it's not possible, I guess I'll have to resort to some startup script that quietly runs that registry tweak for every user that logs on, but this is less than ideal.

Thanks a lot in advance for the help!

A:Remove start menu fade effect for all users

It would be fairly easy to do with the Group Policy Editor.

Click Start > Run > type gpedit.msc

User Configuration > Windows Settings > Scripts (Logon/Logoff) > Logon

Write a simple batch file for your registry tweak and add it to Logon (for local computer).

However, I fail to see the use for such a tweak for the Start Menu??? I've just tried it after rebooting and it doesn't change much.

Hi everyone,

This is going to sound silly but it's driving me crazy. Ever since upgrading to windows 10 I've had a custom color taskbar and White windows title bars. All of a sudden out of nowhere today they have turned blue.

Can someone please help me remove them? I'm actually a pretty advanced computer user but can't
seem to figure this one out. It's driving me crazy though.

Here is that they look like:
Window title bars used to be just white, every window that's now in focus has that dumb blue color, the only way I've found so far to turn it back to white it to also turn my taskbar color off. It was not that way this morning though.

How do I fix this? It's driving me insane.

Thank you very much for your time.

A:Title bar colors all of a sudden started appearing? Can't remove. :(

Going to mark this solved and share the answer for that one person who's going to end up googling this issue in the middle of the night in four years to find the issue was solved but OP never left an answer. :P

Run Regedit

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\DWM

Change "ColorPrevalence DWORD" to 0 for off and 1 for on.

This will allow you to have a colored taskbar without having a colored titled bars around windows.

I have the Royale Noir window theme installed (could be any other window XP theme than the Windows Classic). I modified a bit but the windows XP GUI (Graphical user interface ) does not allow me to change active title and taskbar colors.

My objective is to remove the gradient effect in the taskbar and active title bar of windows XP by either using one single color for both "GradientActiveTitle" AND "ActiveTitle" OR find a way to deactivate / disable / remove the gradient effect. But I can’t figure out how to do this simple thing!

Does anybody know how to edit the colors in a theme? Don't even bother pointing me to “Display properties > Appearance > Advanced”, the changes you make in there for Active Title (and others) only apply if you are using the Windows Classic theme (which I'm not).

I'm thinking a Registry tweek or a script is needed. I did edit the registry under “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors” But it didn’t work. I also edited the theme file documents, it did not work either. I'm lost ! I just want to get rid of the 2 color gradient and, incidentally be able to change the title bar and taskbar colors.

If you use the Windows Classic theme, you do not have this problem. You only have this problem if you are using a windows XP theme of some sort.

Can you help anyone? Thanks!!

But how am I to strip down and reinstall XP, minus all the bloatware, drivers, and other bits that i do not need without a copy of the XP install disc?

This thing didnt come with anything other than a drivers and utilities disc, and I want to remove essentially all of that stuff. Except the power management utility of course.

But my issue is that as far as I am aware you cannot simply grab any old XP install disc and use it with the serial key that is stuck to the bottom of the unit. Is there any way of obtaining a windows XP Home ULCPC installation disc? Obviously I dont need a serial key, so I would assume this doesnt fall under any sort of pirating rules on this forum.

Or is it basically the same as another install version?

I have bought a new computer, thinking I could save some money by building and configure it myself. I happily installed Win 7 and booted - yay evereything works fine.. until BSOD and BSOD and BSOD all at random, even before installing any software.
Windows 7 - Version 6.1.7600 build 7600 x64
Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GH
ATI radeon HD4870
3x A-data 2GB DDR2-1066+ plus series

Ok, my trials:windows problem - reinstalled windows. No change.
driver problem, probably graphic card. Downloaded latest ATI Catalyst. No change.
HDD problem - tested drive with WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic. No errors.
windows problem (again), tried sfc /scannow. 2 files couldn't be restored: something with quarantine proxy
memory problem, ran memtest86+, found a problem and found one stick with issues - removed it. No change.
since the minidumps often points at "memory_corruption", i thought memory bios settings.. changed bios to "fail safe". No change.
changed RAM timing and voltages in bios to manufacturer rated 5 5 5 15, 2.1V. No Change, got a feeling the BSOD's came more often though
BSODS occur as frequently in windows safe mode.

An excerpt of the minidumps, from Windbg:

MSinfo32 and Minidumps attached

any idea how to proceed?

A:BSODs all over. Shiny new computer

windows problem (again), tried sfc /scannow. 2 files couldn't be restored: something with quarantine proxy

Isn't building a blast? Hope you haven't installed too much and can easily do another clean install.

A new install should not result in your sfc/scannow results. Eliminating those errors are your first step. Since you believe you have a bad mem stick, removing it doesn't fix any corruption that may have occurred in the original install.

Therefore I would check for a bios upgrade, do not install the mem in question, boot to a memtest disc and run 4/5 passes, and then reinstall the OS.

I know it's a pain in the a$$ but proving/validating hardware will save you a lot of future grief!

Try putting the disc in to the drive and then going to Computer.
Right-Click the Disc in there and click explore.
Look for a setup file.
Follow this tutorial to run the program in Compatibility Mode for whichever OS it is compatible with.

Hi guys,

1. What I am looking for is to make my taskbar set to "Use small icons". But using the default setting from right clicking on the taskbar -> Properties -> Use small icons, does make the taskbar smaller as I want, but the icons are way too small I cannot see clearly on my taskbar.

What I am talking about is to have the actual size of the icon to be bigger, occupying more space rather than having some space around it; and I am not talking about the MinWidth trick. Is there anyway to do that via registry or even third party?

2. I don't like the shiny way Windows 7's taskbar is. XP was great to just show clearly what is written there with minimal effect on mouse hover. Is there anyway to do so? By the way, the following three tricks did not work for me (or people out there are talking about something else!): [1] [2] and [3]

What I am talking about is the glossy look that the taskbar icons have by default with some white strips around. Or when you hover the mouse, the white strips change a bit. I want all removed, something like XP.

1. I don't want to use Classic Theme
2. I have already tried third party custom themes like Luna XP for windows 7 or others, but they all tend to change so many styles and start menu features that I won't need.

All I want is to have an option to remove the shiny look and get bigger icons on the taskbar!

A:Larger and no-shiny taskbar icons

Hi , I bought a brand new T470 in August and everything seemed fine. Now the touchpad has developed a shiny spot in the middle ( where I usually move my finger ). I have tried to use isopropyl alcohol ( rubbing alcohol ) and water thinking this could be an oil smudge. But this seems to be like the paint or the coating is worn off. Is this a normal thing for T470 series or something I need to report to the Lenovo support ?.Provided the fact that this is a brand new ( and pretty expensive !! ) laptop, I feel really worried about the quality of the item I have spent so much on. It would be really great if someone could advise on this.

I tried IE8. This seemed to interfere with Mcafee. When I opened the security centre there was only a plain white box.
Couldn't 'uninstall' IE8 so I restored to before IE8.
This rectified the Mcafee problem but now IE7 seems corrupt.
There is no text in the title bar. The menu bar (favourite, tools etc is missing. Right clight on the title bar offers only restore, close etc.
Downloading is not working too well. There is no 'pop up blocked' menu displayed to allow downloads.
It's running on Xp home.
Everything was fine until I tried IE8 and then restored.
Nearly forgot to mention that the tabs are missing too!

Any ideas????

A:ie7 menu bar missing, no title in title bar

This MAY NOT be your exact problem, but....

IE7 uses Vista display criteria. Normally the Menu seems not to be there.

What they (idiots at Microsoft) did is replace the Menubar with a Context Menu. Right-click the Titlebar and you should see your Menu listing, and if you select View, you can check Classic Menubar(?) and get the Menubar back.

The other problems MAY be solved by resetting your Internet Options, especially the Advanced tab.

Hi all,

I'm not very good at explaining this stuff, but here goes. I have a pretty new computer (<3 months old -despite the older model in my profile), which worked wonderfully until about 10 days or so ago. All of a sudden my gaming experience took a dive. More importantly, however, I can't seem to surf the web anymore!. I use firefox, but used to use IE. Neither one of them work anymore. I get server timeouts, loading errors, everything. I have done as much research as I can stand on this issue. I've done speed tests on my connectons (15-30 mgps download, 2.5 upload). To be honest, I can't remember everything I've done. I'm not an idiot, but this clearly isn't my area of expertise.

Will someone please help? I know that my question is probably woefully defiicient when it comes to the required information for anyone to help. I would be very happy to provide you with whatever info you'd like (but please, please, tell me how to get it, lol).

Thanks in advance.

Hi! I just joined this site. I am having a problem with my Dell XPS 15 that I recently purchased. Half of my title bar goes missing after waking my computer from sleep mode. It happens in all windows when I maximize and it's VERY irritating. I tried reinstalling my default system video drivers and it seemed to work for a while but now it's happening again. Iv'e attached a pic of what it looks like. Thanks in advance!!

Doing a triple boot of my system (98,2k and XP Pro, in that order). During the install of XP, due to an idiosyncrasy (sic) of this particular CD-Rom drive, it was unable to properly install the file 'title.wm_'. I was able to bypass it, and the install went from there, and everything runs fine. I have since been able to extract this file using my other PC, and am wondering where it's supposed to go, and what exactly it is. It sounds like it's a Windows Metafile, but haven't looked at it yet.
Can someone tell me where it is supposed to go? System32?
Also, in a fresh install of XP, is the desktop supposed to have no icons, with the exception of the recycle bin?

If you check your path variable in the dnvironment variables, you should be able to put anywhere that is in the path and it should work. System32 sounds rignt, but I don't have XP and will defer to others that do. Nick? Brooks? Slithy?

Can someone tell me what version of Windows the below is and do they match the file name?

A:DVD Title

GSP1RMCPRXFRER_EN_DVD. That would be Windows 7, Professional version, with service pack 1, 64 bit, new install, English language.

My computer just keeps having sparadic weird behavior. It locks up many times during various operations. Some days I can retrieve my email, but I cannot get on line nor send email. Also, the message "Please set my title!" keeps coming up. I am not sure what this is referring to. The only thing Trend Micro and AVG have found are tracking cookies which I have deleted. Do you have any other ideas?

Hi folks. I want to change "Shut Down" that you see in the picture.

When I right-click on the start orb and chose "Properties" and change the "Power Button Action" setting to ANY selection and press "Apply" after, this doesn't change. Please advise how to change the button action, to "Suspend" or "Hibernate"?? Thank you

A:Change Effect

Hello Ilya,

This is actually Install Updates and Shut Down you are seeing instead. When enabled as it is by defautl, it will override and display as the default option in the Shut Down Windows dialog box and Start Menu power button (alert shield on Shut Down button) when important or critical Windows Updates are available.

Basically it's temporarily overriding what you have set for the power button until the Windows Updates are installed. If you like, you can use the tutorial below to disable Install Updates and Shut Down to always have the power button action you selected instead.

Shut Down Windows - Enable or Disable "Install Updates and Shut Down"

Hope this helps,
