Preferred Solution: Problem with Hotmail spam being sent from my account?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I keep a close eye on what I am subscribed too and none of these look familiar to me. Theres 3 emails appeared in my inbox and they were all in one hour. I haven't clicked on any of the links with these emails but I am worried because their ion my inbox and not junk mail

how would have these companies got my email address?

Your Hotmail account has an option to delete these emails - and when deleting them you should have the option to mark them as Junk Mail.

Well it looks like a worm or virus of some sort has got into my hotmail account and has sent emails to everyone on my contact list. Quite crude emails at that... which is very embarrassing for me.

I have looked at a few users that have suffered the same fate after searching it on Google and have seen that some have run the program "Malwarebytes". So I?m not sure if this helps, but below is the log. It found 3 infected files... they have been quarantined but I?m not sure how important they are in the running of the Windows OS.

I was alerted by my contacts in my Hotmail account that I sent them an email containing a link (hxxp://www.fantafox.com/find11.html) which if clicked, would start running a program (like a wzzard, with Next and Cancel buttons on the dialog). I used my Hotmail account recently but only for a Video conversation, I didn't send any emails. I think my computer is infected. Could you please help me identifying the virus and getting rid of it, please. Thanks.

Hello... Most likely something has guessed your Email password. You should change it after running this.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Download Link 1Download Link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives... Hi, I have a vista 64 bit PC system, and a hotmail and a roadrunner email account. Only the hotmail account has been infected I believe as follows:
1. Spam of my entire contact lists and random accounts are being sent from my hotmail account. I get undelivered notifications even in non English languages.
2. Spam is added to each email I try to send out.
I may have other problems associated with the above two.

My norton internet security 2010 does not dectect anything, nor does malwarebytes software. Help would be appreciated. I have a lot of ties to the hotmail account and hate to close it unless its absolutely necessary. Thanks, WC

My mum asked me today, why was I sending her spam mail and true enough, I checked my hotmail account and I've sent out 2 spam emails with links to a website.

In a panic I immediately changed my password and started virus scanning.
I have a paid NOD32 running on my machine, I also did a check with spybot and malwarebytes and all they found were some tracking cookies.
I also did a scan just before christmas with pandascan online scanner and that found nothing but cookies.

Now the only thing that's changed been then and christmas was me receiving a reconditioned Iphone 4, which has turned into a bit of a saga, the phone was sold by a reputable store chain, but when I tried to activate it on the 3 network, they told me the phone had been registered as "lost" so it had been blocked. I synced this phone up with my machine and itunes account before the truth came out.
Whether there's a connection I don't know.

I'm running windows 7 64-bit, but I did run gmer, most of the options were greyed out, but it didn't report anything suspicious.

I'm greatful for any help, I need to know how they got into my hotmail account

My Hotmail account has started sending out random spam mail to people who are listed in my contacts. One friend has had 15 of these emails in one day. The emails have no subject and only contain a weblink which is usually different with every mail sent out - e.g. http://caribbean-vacation-rent.com/indexi.html

As I am completely oblivious to these emails being sent and I have no control over them, I am at a loss as to what to do. Deleting the account completely would seem to be the sure way of stopping this but as I have that email address registered with a number of online forums etc. I am reluctant to do this.

Would removing my friend's email addresses from the contact list be a solution?

A:Solved: Hotmail account sending out spam

Not got hotmail, but I had the same thing happen with a Gmail account of mine, that I normally access through OE, so don't go into the web interface.

Turns out that someone in China had logged into it and sent spam to all the contacts. How they worked out the password is beyond me, presumably a security flaw in Gmail. But that's what I'd suspect. Hotmail, like Gmail, will let you check who logged in when and where from if you look at the bottom of the page (I guess).
You'll need to change yr password and security details. They already have yr address book so no point in deleting that.

My hotmail account sent out a spam message to all of my contacts. It also set my "away message" to the same spam message (which may have blocked my incoming emails temporarily). I changed my account password as soon as I found out what was going on (which I believe was the day after most of the spam emails were sent out) but I want to make sure this wasn't the result of malware (as opposed to just my password being compromised).

This is the email that was sent to all my contacts:

how are you doing recently?
I would like to introduce you a very good company and its website is famuch.com. It can offer you all kinds of electronic products that you may be in need, such as laptops ,gps ,TV LCD,cell phones,ps3,MP3/4,motorcycles and etc........
You can take some time to have a check ,there must be something interesting you 'd like to purchase .

Hi, looking for some advice as to what to do next.

A Hotmail account has started sending spam messages. Each message is a single URL sent to groups of contacts, subjects changed between !, the date, Hello or blank. The Hotmail account is accessed via a browser (Google Chrome).

After closing the browser (after noticing the spam) and trying to log back in, received the message "It Looks like someone else may be using your account". Managed to reset password via a second e-mail address registered to the account (also Hotmail).
The Hotmail account is usually left open in a browser and the laptop hibernated.

Hi BC mods,
For a while now, my hotmail account has been sending all sorts of spam on its own. It's become so frequent (several times daily) that my friends are on my case about it. I rarely use this particular account for e-mail purposes, but it is used on a daily basis for messenger, facebook among other things. It seems like a virus, but if my hard drive is to blame, it's too late because it's dead now. Can I fix this dilemma without having to delete my account???

A:Hotmail account sending spam automatically!

Hello The7thSon

It sounds like your account information may have become compromised. By far the safest, smartest, and most secure course of action would be to close that account. However, you may try simply changing your password. Make sure you use a clean computer (one that isn't infected with malware), and make sure to use a strong, complex password that you do not use elsewhere.

Alternatively, you can try contacting Hotmail and see what they recommend.

Hope that helps,

Hi guys, my hotmail account has recently begun to send out spam mails (I know this because of the tons of Postmaster Delivery mails I get every morning. I have checked my outbox, and unfortunately I see that it is truly this account that is sending out the mails, and not merely a spoof. I have already changed my password, but can't tell whether it has made a difference as of now.

I have not been able to identify what is the trojan/worm responsible for this. I used Spybot Search and Destroy in both normal and Safe mode, but it didn't turn up anything of note. Would really appreciate your help and advice on this issue!

My computer has been sending Spam emails to my contact list off and on for a couple of weeks now. I've run Avast antivirus and SuperAntiSpyware multiple times, but still the spam goes out. I am using Outlook to manage my email (several accounts setup, but only my msn.com account is affected). It seems my msn.com password may have been compromised as well since the spam sometimes gets sent when my computer is off. I've changed my msn.com password, but I can see that spam messages have also been sent directly from my PC since they are listed in the "Sent" folder.

Any help will be appreciated.

I do have a Windows XP Install CD, and my system drive is "E:".

Thanks, Doug

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

Your hard drive is almost full. Having too little free space on your hard drive can compromise system performance.

E: is FIXED (NTFS) - 143 GiB total, 10.829 GiB free.

I suggest you move pictures, music, etc. to an external drive or USB stick if you have one and uninstall any programs that are never or hardly ever used.

This morning when I logged in to my hotmail account I had several undeliverable e-mail messages in my inbox. When I looked at the sent items folder I saw that everyone on my contact list had received an e-mail message that I did not send. My anti-virus is working and updated and it did not find any infected files in my computer.

I have changed my password to a temporary one until I understand what's causing this and can make it stop. I have run all the diagnostic tools suggested on the "first step" thread and attached the files. I'm Running Windows 7 and I don't have the original DVD or a boot disk.

Here's a copy of the message sent to my contact list:

hi, recently my hotmail was used to send out spam to a big list of people most of which i dont know. I have the hotmail linked via pop3 to a mozilla account on this computer, so i ran a malware scan and hope one of the techs here can check it over and see if anything stands out. in the meantime i have changed my hotmail passwords on a clean computer so it doesnt happen again.

there is a few programs on this list that may cause concern, i run a web server from time to time which has only local network access and use VNC enterprise to assist various family members, this has WAN access.

i havent had any other problems other than this rogue hotmail hijack so im fairly sure my system is ok but i'd rather get it looked over by a pro,

A:Hotmail account sending out spam to my contacts list

Unless you are absolutely certain that the E-mail is actually coming from your computer, it would be more likely that someone else's computer is infected and the malware found your E-mail address there. And too, spammers often mask their stuff as if it came from an E-mail daemon, since most ISPS do not filter that address.

My problems probably commenced approximately two weeks ago, when I decided to watch a TV show I'd missed online. One dodgy website informed me that I didn't have the DivX codec, so I pressed 'Install Codec' using the automatic Chrome popup instead of going to the DivX site directly. This enabled me to watch the show, but also kindly installed what was supposedly a Symantec virus scanner on my machine. I believe at this stage I ran Microsoft Security Essentials, which found nothing. Without restarting, I removed the codec. The 'virus scanner' remained, and did not have an option to uninstall within Add/Remove Programs, nor did it come with an uninstall.exe. I used Microsoft's 'Autoruns' tool to determine that it had placed an entry to run its exe at startup, so deleted the registry entries and all the associated files. I scanned with MSSE again to no avail. Sadly I do not have a record of the exact file names.

Several days later, a friend came over with a USB drive. I have a laptop and desktop computer, and the USB drive was plugged into both machines. Both times, the Win 7 prompt for what to do appeared, and I never pressed any autoruns. The friend later went home and reported that Avira found "Winmazebat" on her drive (an autorun.inf type worm). Concerned that I had given this to her, I ran MSSE and a whole host of other antiviruses / malware removal tools including Kaspers... Read more

On Saturday I got a number of emails to my hotmail account stating that there was a failure to deliver messages to people on my contacts list. A bunch of people that I haven't talk to in years (those accounts no longer existed). Later on this followed by a number of replied emails from random people from my contacts list saying I had sent them a link. I checked my sent messages, there is nothing there.. obviously I hadn't been sending these emails... but I looked on the failed delivery and there are so many contacts from the list that are people i talk to..that must have actually got the email. Some professors, some other students and i don't no how to stop this from happening. It happened again today where someone told me that i sent them an email with a virus looking link in it. This email address is particularly important for my daily work/school functions and i would like to keep it as a reliable means of communication...

To summarize the Problem:
-Sending unintended/ untraceable emails to all my contacts

Hi Folks: Dec. 3rd

I was experienceing no problems with accessing my Hotmail account until a few days ago. I think Hotmail has changed their web page because I have noticed, using other computers recently, that it is different.

On my computer I can't even access the webpage now; a couple of days ago, when I had still set Hotmail Inbox as my DEFAULT internet page I was able to see my mail (albeit on a diffent webpage) but I couldn't open any messages. At the bottom on my Status Bar the message reads 'Error Found'whenever i click on a message. On other computers I can access the mail but I can't delete any messages, esp. from my Junk Mail & I can't access the address Book (Contact List) at all.

I have tried a few suggestions from your readers: e.g., checking the Time/Date settings, enabling cookies, etc.
I would very much appreciate any HELP you can give.

Thanks so much.

I would edit out the emails in your post. There is a feature in the "User Panel" under "Edit Options" that if checked a person can send you and email without seesing your addy. There are mostly real nice folks here but you never know who is lurking around hunting for email addresses to bombard with spam are other junk.

Try going to www.msn.com and click on the Hotmail button there and see if you can access it from there.

I keep my Hotmail account open during work so that I can email with my wife (I know, I know - but we don't abuse the privilege and my boss knows I keep it open, ok?). Anyway, for a while now when I've signed in to Hotmail, instead of making a nice neat transition from the login page to my inbox, it would go to a "file not found" page. I had solved this minor issue by simply refreshing the page. Often it would go to a weird looking, text-only version of my inbox, which I would have to refresh again. Then everything would work fine for the rest of the day. This occurred in both IE7 and Google Chrome.
Yesterday, as our resident "tech guy" (as in, happens to know more than anyone else in our company, and only enough to be dangerous), I was tasked with installing an updated version of NOD32 antivirus software. I don't know if these things are related, but now I am unable to access my inbox for Hotmail, in either IE or Chrome.

When I try to go to the log-in page, sometimes I can't even get to it. If I open a new window, I can usually at least get the log in page and enter my username and password. But after I attempt to complete the sign-in process, I get a "HTTP 400 - Bad request" error. In Chrome, it says, "Bad Request (Invalid Verb)".

This happened to me yesterday afternoon, after installing NOD32. When I logged in on both my computers at home last night, I had no problem.

Virtually everything I help other folks with I can find an answer to, but this one has me tearing my hair out.

Where I live in Spain we often get power cuts. Each time it happens I have to re-enter passwords for all the PC forums I help on and my Hotmail account, that was only a minor irritation, but now Hotmail has changed its security measures and made it a big irritation.

After the power has failed, PC is rebooted and when I try to sign into Hotmail I enter my email address and password and it takes me to a page that says "You haven't signed in from this location recently" that alone is hard to understand as I am using my hotmail account every single day.

It then asks for me to verify the account and sends me a text message, I enter the code number received and submit it only to be taken back to the same page again. I've done this verification several times and it just goes around in a never ending circle.

I end up having to select the option "I can't verify my account", fill in all the details and then later in the day or the next morning my account is accessible again, but only until there is another power cut and I have to go through the same routine all over again. I've tried to add my desktop PC as a trusted PC but it says I need to have Windows Essentials installed, so I installed it, rebooted and still got the same message.

On my laptop PC I don't get any of the above problems and can happily sign in and out of Hotma... Read more

I can’t access my HOTMAIL accounts- HOTMAIL support?

I learned about Microsoft’s new policy of not allowing you to send email from Hotmail using it’s own products Outlook and Outlook Express unless you are paying an additional fee, when I replied to a (Hotmail) email while using OE. After sending my reply I received an error message that OE could not access the account. It then proceeded to DELETE all my previous email message in outlook express for this account.

A web search then led me discover that this account was one of those now requiring payment of a fee to send mail using Outlook or OE instead of logging on to the website. (They are doing this in stages so some HOTMAIL accounts still allow the free use and access with Outlook/OE.)

I then tried to sign on to my account using another Microsoft product Internet Explorer- initially everything looked unchanged,

1. however after typing in my name and password instead of opening my account

2. I got a new screen of “scrambled letters” designed to prove that a person and not a machine is accessing my account.

3. I type in these scrambled letters and one of two things happens:

a. (Usually) I receive yet another screen of scrambled letters to input

b. (Occasionally) I receive the “sign in screen” again EITHER WAY

4. Whichever screen I receive- whether I input scrambled letters yet again or insert my name and password the process repeats itself and one of two things happens:

A:I can't acces my HOTMAIL account- Hotmail Tech Support?

I've never used Outlook or Outlook Express in any form my self, so I can only offer some limited suggestions for sorting this out.

First: have you tried deleting all cookies and accessing the account? If using XP/2k -- it may even be helpful to try creating a new User Profile and logging in under that, this will ensure you have an entirely new web cache, index.dat and cookie folder.

Try accessing the account from another computer and see if you get in that way.

My husband and I have separate hotmail accounts. The question I have involves my husband and email that he receives. He will send an email to Sally Jones with the subject being titled Thursday. He will get an email several days or weeks later from Sally (no last name listed) with the subject being re: Thursday as if Sally Jones is replying to him. However, when he opens the email it's usually a spam for Viagara or something else.

Is there some way to prevent this from happening? Obviously someone or something is getting into the email and reading the person he is sending to and then turning it around to benefit them.

Any suggestions?

A:hotmail and spam

you can block spam from your hotmail account, however I agree with RSM123, you should inform the person you receive this spam from, but only if it is a familiar email address to you, if you do not know the email address DO NOT reply at all.

i am getting a ridiculous amount of porn and spam in my hotmail account. i am using the junk mail filter, but im getting so much in my junk box that my account is always full. what can i do to get rid of all this without opening a new address?

A:hotmail spam

You can add names to the safelist so you only get email in the inbox from the address that are on your safelist.

Also you can set the junk folder to delete right away any email that goes into that folder.
You will not see any more spam. Well I get one a month that goes to the inbox but I block it, but that is better then 50 a day.

You need to undo the delete the spam right away of you sign up some place like here and they have to email you back to get you set up as a Register user. But then move that mail and add them to your safelist and then set it back so all spam is deleted right away.

Also MyWay.com is a great webbase email you can use and there are NO Ads.

Trick or treat? You be the judge. Larry at CMA caught the latest.

MSN is sharing your Hotmail ID information by default, even if you previously chose NOT to have your information shared. In March they did a "3 for 1" split breaking the original one check box for sharing information into 3:
share my email address
share my first and last name
share my other registration information
When you created the hotmail account (prior to March or April of this year), if you chose not to share your info, the "share my first and last name" is not shared after this 3-for-1 split. However, by default, the "share my email address" and "share my other registration information " are shared. So now you know where all that new junk mail is coming from!

To change them for every hotmail account you have, you must go into that hotmail account. Click on Options above folder tab, and in the first column under "Your Information" click on "Personal Profile". Scroll ... Read more
