ThinkPad L520 RAM Memory Upgrade / Installation

Q: ThinkPad L520 RAM Memory Upgrade / Installation

I know that the L520 allows a maximum memory of 8 GB. Do I have to use each slot to get maximun memory (4 + 4) or can I install a single 8 GB stick into a single slot and leave the other empty? If I can use the 8 + 0 method, does it make any difference as to which slot I install the stick? Additionally, does it make any difference in speed if I use the PC3-10600 memory or PC-12800 memory? i7 - 2620M processor

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: ThinkPad L520 RAM Memory Upgrade / Installation

I'm of the opinion a L520 will support 16GB, at least my T520 and both X220 I have do so. And they're the same generation as yours

Generally speaking it's better to have two sticks for dual channel, 2x 4GB should be better than 1x 8GB. Although the difference may not be so noticeable in normal daily usage.

From the parts list of the Maintenance Manual - your computer will only accept 4gb modules.  If you only have one socket on the motherboard, you are limited to a single 4gb stick.  Usually the system has the option for two memory modules, so I would suggest contacting Lenovo support by phone to discuss this situation.

Hi folks.I bought a used Thinkpad L520 some months ago and was very disappointed by the touch pad surface. I was used to the smooth, accurate touch pad on the T61 series - especially the T61p has a wonderful one. The L520 touch pad is inaccurate and it is difficult to move the cursor smoothly. Why Lenovo has replaced the good-working old pad is a riddle. But I have this laptop, so can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the pebbled touch pad with a smooth one? Or is it possible to make the movement more smooth in the driver?

Hello, i have a Lenovo thinkpad L520 and i'm looking forward to upgrade the cpu (Pentium B960, Intel HM65 mobo). I have some questions regarding this: Is the Intel core i7 2630QM the top processor that i can go with, or could i try something like i7 2760QM, i7 2860QM or any other similar quad core processor with same TDP 45W, same socket, same stepping? (I suppose 3rd generation cpu's are not compatible, right?) Is the Turbo Boost feature on these cpu's going to be fully functional?  BIOS Version: 1.23 (8GET46WW)  Links: Intel Core i7 2760QM            Intel Core i7 2860QM            Intel Pentium B960

Hello everyone,  i'm trying to upgrade a Lenovo L520 and a Lenovo L530 from (defective) HD Displays to Full HD Displays. I searched online and found that one screen that would fit both models would be the B156HAN01.1 So far so good but after i installed the display all i get is the background light and nothing else. So i guess i also have to swap the cables. No big deal. Except that i can't find the cables anywhere.....if i'm correct i need the 04W1730 for the L520 which is impossible to find.  I saw (on reddit) that the SL510 cable apparently does work with FullHD Displays and can be swapped to the L420. Does this work for the L520 and L530 as well? Because the SL510 cables can be found in abundance.   For the L530 the HD+ cable should be FRU 04W6976 am i correct going with this one?   Thanks in Advance. Would be awesome if i could get those two displays to work after all.

hello, I hope this is the right place to ask some Q about the IBM thinkpad G40 .. My son bought a second hand G40 some years back. It had/has only 256M memory. Now I want to upgrade the memory and I scanned the relevant web pages of Lenovo. Apparently the memory should be PC2100 or maybe PC2700 becasue of PC2100 availability ? (DDR)Now a cpu-z run on that laptop says the memory is PC2300 (142Mhz) so what gives ? Has this been put in to be on the safe side or ?and an additional Q .. can memory modules be mixed ? ie can I add a 512M PC2100 sodimm to get 768M ? or do I need to remove the original 256M and go for 2x 512M ?TIAImbsysop

Welcome to the forum! Your machine can run PC2100/2700 memory, and you can combine it, it will always run at PC2100 speed regardless of anything else. It can be mixed, no questions asked. If the G40 is Celeron powered, it will take up to 1Gb (2x512Mb) of RAM. If it's Pentium 4-powered, you can install up to 2Gb of RAM. Hope this helps.

Currently I am trying to upgrade memory modules on my ThinkPad P51 of type 20HH. It was planned to have maximum, i.e. 64 GB, instead of original 8 GB. After some research four of Crucial 16 GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM CT16G4SFD824A have been obtained. With absolutely no problems two of them have been inserted in slots under the bottom cover. On that stage the laptop starts up and works perfectly with total 40 GB of RAM consisted of new 32 GB and original 8 GB. However, after adding a new memory module under the keyboard and/or replacing original 8 GB memory module with new 16 GB, and/or even putting original 8 GB memory module in the neighbouring slot, the laptop doesn't start up. Several attempts have been done to solve this problem, i.e. BIOS has been updated to 1.47 version, CMOS battery has been removed and returned back to its place, SSD drive has been removed and returned back to its place, the laptop has been turned on with a battery only, with AC power adapter only and with both of them. Nothing of the listed above helped to solve a problem. Did someone face the same problem? Is there a solution for it?

Howdy All! I just ordered a Thinkpad P70 with a XEON 1505-M processor. It comes with one 16gb ECC memory module. I want to add 3 more and when I checked Crucial.com's memory upgrade options, it only list 1x16GB NON-ECC memory modules! So two questions: 1) Can I mix the 1x16GB ECC memory module with 3 NON-ECC 1x16 modules? 2) How hard is it to install memory in the P70? My last couple of mobile workstations have been Dell M Precisions and adding memory was EASY (no need to remove the keyboard ,etc)! Thanks in advance! Aggie85

Since non-ECC modules are only slightly cheaper I would not recommend it. About 2: for the P50 it is a piece of cake to install memory, it should be no different on the P70.  As for memory: Lenovo currently uses Samsung modules. So if you want to go for the same 16GB ECC modules check for M474A2K43BB1-CPB. I do not know about Cruicial, but at least Transcend also got 16GB ECC modules (check for TS2GSH72V1B). I cannot say anything about the Transcend modules, but I installed two of the 16GB Samsung modules (besides the 8GB module that was already in) in my P50 had no problem so far (even checked with Memtest86+ for a whole night). Cubbi

No,  It won't work and the problem isn't the BIOS or a Lenovo limitation.  You have a 4th gen CPU  i7-4500u.  The 16GB modules only work on 5th gen or later

Unfortunately X200's are very picky with DDR3-12800 (DDR3-1600) like the ones you bought.

I would advice to buy DDR3-10600 (DDR3-1333) or DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) RAM. I would also recommend you to avoid the "Value RAM" line from Kingston, the "Value Select" line from Corsair (other lines from those brands are ok) and any no-name brand from eBay and similar shops.

The current configuration of my system (as bought) is 4Gb RAM.  According to the specifictions, it is upgradable to 8Gb.  I had a conversation with Sales Support via Chat trying to find the correct part number for 8Gb memory to replace the 4Gb.  I was told that as my system is still under warranty, I would need to contact Technical Support for this to happen.  Having done a number of searches on this forum, would I be right in suspecting that the existing 4Gb is soldered in to place - hence the need for a Warranty call to upgrade.  I was advised that any attempt to make the change myself would void the warranty.Any thoughts please.

If so, upgrade to 10GB or 12GB RAM would be posible instead? Also I want to increase the capacity in my laptop (by default is 320 GB.HDD), and I want to put a 500 GB SSD Disc, and if is possible to maintain both the Hard Disc anda SSD Disc, it would be possible to put SSD Disc into the PCI Express slot and mantain the Hard Disc at the same time. Or the only possibility is to replace the Hard Disc for a SSD Disc?Thank you very much,Regards.

I recently purchased a Yoga 11e 20d9 model and so far I'm loving it.  However, I wanted to upgrade the memory from 4gb to 8gb.  I purchased Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) as all the reviews I read said this was okay to use, however, everytime I install the memory and I try to charge the laptop at the same time it crashes.  I can run windows 10 perfectly without issue up until I try to charge it.  I can charge ther laptop when the laptop is off but for the life of me I can't get it to coexist.  I installed the original ram and everything works perfectly.   Even if I'm in bios, as soon as I plug in the charger the laptop will crash.  It literally has rips on the screen and everything fades out.  As soon as I unplug it, the laptop works flawlessly.   I returned the memory and got a replacement and it does the same exact thing.  I updated both the BIOS and battery firmware.  I am out of ideas.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Lenovo Enthusiasts! I am about to purchase the Lenovo Thinkpad 550s, and I am tempted to purchase the baseline memory (4GB) and storage (512GB) HDD.  I want to make sure that I can indeed upgrade the memory to 16GB of RAM and the storage to a 256 (or 512) GB SSD. In my research earlier on, I noticed that somebody had posted a link to the parts list:https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w550s_frubom_20150130.pdf I don't know what half of this technical jargon is, but from what I gather, I have found an SSD made by Samsung on Amazon, and an 8GB memory made by Data Memory Systems that seem to abide. SSD:http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-256GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7KE256BW/dp/B00LMXBOP4 Memory:http://www.datamemorysystems.com/parts/lenovo/03X6657/ Questions:1) Could somebody wiser than me please verify that these products will work for the w550s? A:Lenovo Thinkpad W550s Memory upgrade to 16GB and S...

Very disappointing. Yes, I have the same problem (son, since it is your problem!). I note that over 189 people have at least looked at this question you asked before we decided to have you purchase the W550S...and after calling tech support one last time after my son purchased the machine (and was told there should be no issue)-we see BSOD multiple times within an hour.  They happen so quickly that it is hard to even note what the error message is.... I replaced his 512 HD with Samsung SSD 512GB drive. I used a disk duplicator-everything seemed to go great. Then I put in 16GB of RAM-again, everything seemed great. However, the notebook is only now being used frequently as my son is starting school now-and as said above, the BSOD is making me think this has something to do with the SSD or RAM replacement. Yes, obviously, it's fairly easy to replace with the original parts and see if the problem goes away-but he wanted the SSD and more RAM, so even if that fixes the issue-we will likely get rid of the notebook. BUT:  here is what disappoints me:  absolutely no comment on my son's original questions. I'm guessing I won't get input from Lenovo either....will try to call tomorrow, but we are almost beyond the point where we need to return the SSD/RAM and notebook if we want our money back. A little guidance from Lenovo would be appreicated before we need to make a decision.. Thanks,Steve

The ThinkPad T400 and T500 datasheet states that it can handle up to 8GB of RAM, so it should work unless you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, in which case the maximum RAM that can be addressed by the OS is 4GB regardless of how much RAM you install.       The Windows license key is valid for both 32 and 64-bit, but to go from 32-bit to 64-bit, you would have to uninstall and reinstall Windows. Windows Install Media Download Links,https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Hope that helps,

I have trouble with bluetooth, hotkey doesn't work and maybe more hardware doesn't work correctly (camera?). I think it is because lack of drivers. Any idea? Any source of driver for ThinkPad L520? Because on Lenovo site are only drivers for Windows 7. My laptop type is 7859-42G.thanks a lot

When connected to internet and mains supply my L520 randomly shuts down - the only warning is that the sound shuts down first followed less than a second later by the computer.  Any ideas as to a solution would be welcomed.

Hello guys, last month, I attempted to update my computer due to freqent computer freezing. So, I made a bootable bios CD and did bios update. However, while i was updating BIOS, it freezed and would not advance to next step. I waited about 4hrs and it would not finish it. So, I decided to turn off the computer(I knew what it would lead to). I searched almost every website related lenovo laptop, and I couldn't find a way to fix the bios. Can anyone give an advice? The model is lenovo L520. Thank you. Plz help me.

I need two quality replacement parts for my trusty L520 ThinkPad. I need a battery FRU 45N1001 and I also need a keyboard, both of which appear to be N/A on the Lenovo official site. I did replace the battery once with what I thought was a quality unit only to find the notebook battery life was less than one hour on full charge. The original 57Wh battery that came with the notebook had a 6 hour lifespan. Does anyone have a site that sells quality ThinkPad replacement parts as the battery and keyboard for this notebook seem to be N/A from Lenovo? I really like this notebook and it has been very reliable. Thanks

You can buy from Encompass.  They sell oem parts for Lenovo.  I believe they took over for IBM.  I know that 45N1005 is not the part you are asking for but its listed as the substitute part.  See below 2 links.  Please confirm compatability yourself.  I am just basing it on what the parts site shows. https://lenovo.encompass.com/item/10628293/Lenovo/45N1001/Ba_Rechargeable_Batteries https://lenovo.encompass.com/item/10646822/Lenovo/45N1005/Ba_Rechargeable_Batteries

I have upgraded my to Windows 7 ultimate all seemed to load ok.
However when you turn the laptop on you just get Lenovo page saying press enter to enter bios and this keeps repeating its self I am sure there is an easy cure.
Thank You

Please post back a screenshot of Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image.

Did you Clean Reinstall Windows 7 to Ultimate or insert the Product Key in Anytime Upgrade to unlock the few extra expensive features which almost no consumers need. Otherwise it is the exact same OS.

Try resetting BIOS to defaults, after taking note of SATA controller setting which optimally should be AHCI.

I've installed Windows-10 on a Lenovo L520, which doesn't seem to be supported, as far as I can tell.  It does however work, but disk usage is close to 100%. I see the chipset / sata drivers are really old and there's no chipset drivers available from Lenovo.  Am I really stuck here? There's no drivers from anyone else?

Whoops, sorry, I have an E520. I'll repost in correct forum

Hi! I want to use the hidden /reserved partition to restore my L520 to original factory setting.  I know the "normal" process would be to use the Thinkvantage blue button, but it is not working. I did a fresh install with a Win7 Pro Media that I had in the past, and is no longer available to me.  Since I made the fresh install, I was never able to fully use the special functions of the keyboard, or the ThinkVantage options, but since it got me rid of the bloatware that come preinstalled, it was good enough. Now that I missed the free upgrade to win10, though, I'd like to at least start fresh.  I read that solution  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/How-to-make-the-ThinkVantage-blue-button-work... But it refers to an inexistant registry key, and doesn't provide full instructions (namely, what application to link the button to.) Also, most of the solutions are about using the Thinkvantage Toolbox, and that has been replaced with Lenovo Service Bridge, and that only seems to manage the drivers and updates. All I want to be able to do is to be able to use that button to initiate a factory restore.  If there is any other way to initiate it, that would also do. Thanks!

I just installed two 16 gb DDR4-2400 modules on my Tiny desktop and within minutes the computer just shuts down.  I tested the modules on another like desktop and same issue occured.  I am however able to sucessfully run with a single 16 GB or a combination of 16 GB and 4 GB modules.  The shutdown occurs only when using the full 32 gb.  I have verified with Crucial that the modules are compatible.  I have also tried another set of modules with same results.  Chipset and Bios are up to date and this is a clean build of Windows 10, version 1809.  Thoughts on what could be the issue?

A:M710q Tiny: Memory RAM upgrade to 32 GB = Shutdown in minutes. Solved: use Kingston memory

I have run into the same issue with Lenovo M900 Tiny model 10FM and above at my workplace.  One stick of 16GB will work (using that now), two sticks however shuts down the system 1 minute into power up...

I used Crucials memory checker, received two DDR4-2400 sodimm 1.2v cl17 16gb dual sided chips (kit of 2x16GB).  System would power up, go into Windows 10, be up for Approx 1 minute and system would power off.  You cannot repower the system, it turns on and shuts off immediately.  Pulling power to the device, plugging in again, will let it power to same point as before.  Approx 1 minute into having both modules installed.

Currently allowing the 16gb to remain to monitor for any issues.  The stick that came out was from the manufacturer, an 8gb with QC M02089 on it, no other markings.  It will not work in either socket with the 16gb chip.  TC steps as follows:

- Both 16 gb chips installed, power off after 1 minute up
- Single 16gb chip, stable
- Single 8gb chip, stable
- Swap 16gb chips in sockets, power off after 1 minute up
- New set of 16 gb modules, same issue as before (these were slightly higher freqency of 2666MHz)

Seems like a power issue on the mobo, too much draw.  As a cannot find any information on the installed chip itself creates a problem I can't get past.

I have just bought some new memory, 2 x 1 gig, inserted it and ran the test. I get one error in the Stride38 test. Address expected is different to the one returned.

I know which chip it is, should I send it back, or is this 1 error acceptable for the system?

Thanks for your response

Hello community members, I have purchased a thinkpad L520 (5016 c74) laptop and upgraded the os to windows 10(x64). For the first few months everything was great but recently after a format my wifi has been somehow disabled and the wlan card is not being recognized as shown in the picture bellow of my device manager. if I enable hidden devices my wlan adapter is shown:  So i decided to reinstall the drivers by using the hardware id of the adapter:PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8176&SUBSYS_819510EC&REV_01  which is this one: link, but the installation process is always stuck, while installing "Cisco EAP-LEAP". Could this be a hardware problem? I tried to launch from a linux live usb and the wifi was still disabled.Furthermore, before the last format i have successfuly upgraded my cpu to i5-2540m, install another 4gb of memory for a total of 8gb and finally installed an ssd. PS. some times after a boot, wifi adaptor is showing with an exlamation mark but after a "scan for hardware changes" it always dissapears. PS2. bios wifi is enabled, hardware switch is set to ON. PS3. From further searching the problem may have been started after installing ThinkVantage System Update after the format.
