Computer crashes to almost all games and some videos when fullscreen

Q: Computer crashes to almost all games and some videos when fullscreen

As the title suggests just about any game will crash. I have managed to work around this by playing in windowed mode which works for some games like saints row 4, but not for dota 2 (dota will crash no matter what I do). Also, netflix will crash the computer if I play the movies in full screen mode.
I've tried a lot of different things and sometimes when I keep my computer on for long periods of time (close to a week) saints row 4 will work just fine in full screen, but then I'll go to watch an anime in full screen (streaming) and the computer will crash. After that it will crash to almost anything that's full screen. Oddly enough I can watch twitch in full screen just fine.....
Totally perplexed......

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all. I have been having the same problems with my desktop (a Frankenstein's monster of different parts first put together with assistance at the closest Frys store) that have spanned at least a few years. I've needed it for college and it mostly works for what I need it to do so I left it like this but would now like to once and for all solve the problem.

I'm running Windows 7 with a MSI mainboard, AMD FX-4100 CPU, 4 Gigs of RAM, currently connected to a ATI Radeon Graphics card connected to a cheap, old HP Pavilion mx50 monitor.

Okay, so the symptoms. Originally, when my computer was left to idle the monitor would shut down as monitors usually will but along with the monitor the whole system would be in a coma that I couldn't even use the off button to stop. I had to push the switch on the back to turn it off. Now it can idle for at least thirty minutes, but I think if left for an hour or two it does the same thing. Unfortunately I forgot how I managed to improve this problem.

The second problem still happens and is my major concern. When running certain functions the computer will either do the same as above or it will crash and immediately turn off the whole system. I can watch DVDs without problems for several hours and mp4s for at least twenty minutes but if I watch for longer, play Minecraft, or even watch Youtube for a significant portion of time it will crash. When it crashes like this I will usually need to wait for around ten to fifteen ... Read more

I have my laptop connected to a Samsung TV which I use as my second monitor, the BSOD didn't happen at the start, but it started when I try to unplug the HDMI cable from my computer I get the BSOD.

It doesn't happen all the time just randomly. . . so I thought the problem could be with my HDMI or the Port. . . but as time passed, the BSOD also occurred when I am switching to/from fullscreen when I play games like, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Dota 2 or League of Legends. . . it also happens when I am watching movies when I try to switch to/from Normal Window to fullscreen even if the Samsung TV is not connected through HDMI.

Please help.

Hi for the last few months I've been trying to figure out why my PC keeps crashing when I'm either playing games or watching video in full screen.

The symptoms are:
-freezing up both picture and sound (loops) so I have to reboot manually
-just cuts out and restarts (as if manual restart)
-BSOD with varying errors

This occurs when:
-playing games, usually after 1/2 hour or so but noit always
-playing DVDs this often happens after only 5 minutes or so
-watching some vidoes in full screen (bbc iplayer, youtube, megavideo and others) but only rarely occurs when playing vids on Veoh or avi files in WMP (it has happened but very rarely usually it's ok doing this)
-sometimes but not often it will do it when watching non fullscreened vids on youtube, or even just web browsing (but this is also very very rare)

This first started occurring around the same time that I installed a new Sound card (Creative X-Fi) but I eliminated that by replacing it with my Asus Xonar.
My main suspect is overheating as it takes a while to happen if the PC has just been turned on. I still suspect the sound card has something to do with this, but only in the sense that it obstructs airflow either just in general or more specifically for the graphics card or my favorite suspect the Northbridge on the mother board (which is already half covered by the graphics card). But these are just speculation, my case is well cooled by 3 120mm fans (& no IDE) plus the PSU. CPU is not OC'd and atm I... Read more

A:Games and fullscreen video crashes

Nope, installed new CPU heatsink+fan and it seemed to be working with a DVD but then crashed again on bbc iplayer. It may be because my pc was off for a while or because the heatsink keeps my mobo a little cooler for a little longer, or a combination of both. But it's definately not my CPU or RAM overheating, and memtest86 came up with nothing after running all night.

Hey everyone,

This problem has been occurring for a fair while now. It occurs every time I stream videos online, sometimes even watching videos off my HDD. I switch to full-screen viewing and within seconds the sound repeats very fast and image freezes on the screen. Computer becomes 100% completely non-responsive.

Any idea why this is happening? Horrible IT tech, I know.

Well.. about 1 week 1/2 ago, my computer started to freeze every 15 minutes... if I got lucky, every 1 hour or so... although, when I started playing games, whether it be in fullscreen or windowed mode (ie. GTA San Andreas) my computer would freeze after 5+ minutes... this never happened before... my computer started freezing the day I acquired a virus/spyware/malware (not sure, but Ill call it a spyware program)... it was called 'antivirus soft'. I removed the virus through reformatting my computer since the virus would not let me execute any anti virus program (or any other such programs) to remove it. I tried going into safe mode by forcefully restarting my computer, and I tried scanning my computer with AVG, and Malware Bytes, although my computer kept freezing!

Also, my internet was suspended by my ISP because apparently, my computer was infected with a network virus called 'Torpig'. I reformatted my computer again after this report. I reformatted my computer (C Drive) and deleted all files off my recovery harddrive (D Drive). I scanned my computer with AVG and Malware bytes. I caught some viruses and apywares and quarantined them... but my computer still freezes... Now, Iam not sure whether Torpig still exists on my computer... so I need help on this too.

Ive found out that the programs I use (those that take up alot of ram... like games) freeze my computer... but then again, my computer freezes even when I dont play games.

I really thought that reformatting ... Read more

Hey there, first time poster here, so sorry if I do something incorrectly. To make a long story short, my problem is in the title. My computer Crashes during Games/Videos. I'd say an average of one crash an hour. Sometimes it has blue screens, sometimes the screen just goes black.

I thought it to be faulty hardware, so I sent it back for repairs, and then they sent it back with replaced vid cards, and a new mobo, but the problems still persist.

So using "WhoCrashed" Here's some info. I've only recieved one crash since I got the computer back from "repairs" today, and haven't played any games, just because the crash is the same I used to get, so I think it may be software side.

Just got a new computer 2 days ago:

Alienware Aurora_r3
Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 Ghz
4.00 GB ram
Windows 7 (64bit)
Dual video cards, both AMD Radeon HD 6800 series, with latest catalyst drivers installed directly from the website

Whenever I try to run games in full screen mode (as opposed to windowed), after 2 to 5 minutes my computer will just turn off. No error messages, warning sounds, lights, anything.. it just turns off. Affected games include Starcraft2, WoW, League of Legends, that I have tested so far.

However, if I run these games in windowed mode, I can play without interruption with all graphic options turned to the max. Problem does not appear to be overheating, as the thermal indicator software that came with pre-installed never gets above 29°C.

Any ideas how to fix? I don't want to have to send it back 2 days after getting it

A:New computer randomly restarts when running games in fullscreen

Alienware has been known with plagued thermal problems.

You can check inside the case and see if there's any possible mis-directed air flows, and point the duct, or add the fan to that area and see if that helps.

Dual video cards are known to be overheat very easily. If you have three PCI-E slots, move the last HD6800 to the bottom and extend the Crossfire cable to there, and see if that actually remedy with that kind of problem.
Otherwise, send it back and complain that you were ripped off, and maybe they could fix it for free.
EDITED: There's other possible options;

- kill all tasks in task manager, or using the batch with " taskkill /F /IM "program name"
- update your directX
- Downgrade your catalyst driver version to the factory driver, or upgrade to the newest driver that is FROM ATI/AMD website. ( www.amd.com )
- leave your side case to open up the more air-flows in the computer.

Hello,

Last year I had crashes during games and benchmarks of the GPU(Furmark).
After about half an hour of playing games the computer just restarted. It was a faulty PSU that I changed and all worked fine.

Two weeks ago the problems started again:
It started with the screen turning black(signal lose) during games for few seconds and the speakers making noise. It was only for few seconds, no restarts.
Then, the screen was turning off again with the noise from the speakers and the computer restarted, the GPU fans went max RPM and the Motherboard made 1 long and 3 short beeps. I had to turn off the PSU with the button to restart.

From what I read I could be a driver problem. I re installed Windows after formatting all the disks.
Now I test with Furmark on any resolution and the computer restarts after I start the benchmark.

Also, It crashed when I watched videos on YouTube, I understood it came from flash hardware acceleration.
The video Crashes stopped
I also Had a BSOD on Idle but then restarted..

What I found is when in Nvidia inspector I put the power and temperature target to minimum(67%) the crash was only after ~10 minutes of the benchmark and not immediately.

My Computer:
I7 2600K
Asus P8P67
Gainward GTX680 4GB
Corsair 1200W PSU
Corsair vengeance 4Gb stick x4

I'm running all on 2560x1440 display.

Thank you for help.

A:Crashes under heavy loads, games and videos.

1 long and 3 short beeps is a ram error I believe. which is easily tested by removing one stick at a time and see if you can make it crash running benchmarks.

id also download msi afterburner and kombuster and stress test your gpu.

also completely unrelated point, why do you have a 1200w psu for a single gtx680 like strapping a v12 to a go kart

this all started after i used the program Driver Genius Professional to update my drivers. me being the dumbass that i am, did not create a backup before updating. after the update it fixed some of the sound issues i had with games, but also started causing crashes when i watched Youtube videos. this was about a month ago and as time passed it got worse and worse. it started causing my computer to freeze whenever i played games. after i restart my computer from a crash sometimes it starts up to a black screen and just sits there until i restart agan.

I have a problem when my videos get a red/pink-ish tint, I don't know why, it may have to do with my graphics card but I have pictures from a random video on youtube that I took as an example, but this problem is the same for all the videos I watch when I click full-screen, it starts flickering with the tint and then when I pause it comes away but then when I play the video it does it again.

Here is when i don't have full screen (this includes cinema mode and anything except full screen):

Heya gents, bought a pre-made from computer from Tiger Electronics last year in June. Immediately, as in the day I got it, I started crashing when opening youtube. I solved that by turning off the Realtime visualization or something along those lines and it was temporarily fixed. I began to have more start up problems and other stupid issues with the computer and their tech-support insisted that nothing was wrong and i'm an idiot but to satisfy me they'd change my hard drive. So that did nothing, and unless I want to pay a bunch for them to do a real check up on it I've been screwed.

Whenever I open a video, from Windows Media Player to my Flip Video camera player my computer will instantly crash. Whether it's a blue, green, white, or black screen it's different every time. If I'm really lucky, I can watch a minute or two of the video before it happens. Really sick of this, would like to be able to utilize my computer, help please

Code:
Is Windows 7 . . . - x64 - Windows was OEM, but after replacing my harddrive had to reinstall the OS my self,
though changed none of the problems
- What is the age of system (hardware)? 1 year - What is the age of OS installation? 6ish months

My computer crashes if I try to watch a video in ANYTHING but VLC media player, videos online and such work but if I try to open a video in any media player besides VLC I get BSOD.

Pentium 4 2.8ghz w/HT

A:Computer crashes when I try to watch videos.

Do you mean a DVD when you say video? or a file you have downloaded to watch?

VLC will play most files because it is packed with Codecs, which are needed to display correctly video from a downloaded file or a DVD.
Windows media player doesn't necessarily come packed with all those that are needed...

However, it is unusual for it to cause a BSOD.

Have you been to Windows Update recently? Do a full scan, and install any updates including driver updates.
See if that helps.

Over the last few weeks I've been having serious computer crash issues. It only seemed to happen when i play any type of videos on my computer (youtube, etc). All types, even if it was just a small video advertisment off to the side of a webpage it would crash my computer and it would bluescreen. At first this would only happen when i used the Google Chrome web browser, so i decided to try using the Opera web browser. This worked for awhile but then it started crashing in Opera too. So i switched browsers again. This time to the newest version of Mozilla Firefox. This worked for about 2 weeks and then my computer started crashing again. It's beginning to be a BIG problem and i'm worried its causing serious damage to my PC. Does anyone know why this is happening or know anything at all that might help??? thanks.

So, Youtube and other sites work, but with certain embedded video players, clicking the fullscreen button does nothing. The video just remains windowed. This has been a problem for awhile now, and I have been unable to find a solution anywhere, as nobody seems to share my issue. I run Firefox, and have an HP Pavilion laptop. I will upload a screenshot of one of the players that does not work.
Also, I tried disabling hardware acceleration and had no luck.

RE
It is not the website lacking the required code for fullscreen, because this happens on any website running one of these players, and they used to work fine for me.

A:Fullscreen button not working with online videos

Other than the video being stretched on my 16:10 display, I had no issues w/ the playback on IE10 & FF26. Have you tried updating Flash plugin, if not the latest, to see if that fixes your problem? Do you have the same problem w/ IE?

Hello,

I've been having a problem with online videos lately. To be more exact, the audio part of the video, while the video is in full screen mode. The video itself is fine, but the sound is really choppy and seems to be in slow motion. This ONLY occurs with ONLINE videos when the video is in FULLSCREEN mode. I tried using different browsers but it's the same either with Opera (my default), IE or Firefox. I believe this began after I updated my DirectX (p.s. I saw it updating and installing some files) (p.s.s. downloaded the DirectX updater from Microsoft web page of course). Everything was working fine until then. And since I only watch free iptv (don't have a tv at the moment ) this problem is quite bothersome.

(I'm running 32 bit win 7, default browser Opera, dxdiag >> no problems, bah.. what else 3 year old pc - pretty decent specs though )

All help is appreciated!

Wow, my last post here was way back in 2009. I had to sit here for half an hour trying to remember my old password. I may end up using this site a little more often now that I've got friends offering me gas money to fix their PCs. This problem however, is one of my own that's been bothersome lately that I try to just ignore but I've finally gotten fed up enough to try to fix it.

The problem I'm having has to do with my taskbar staying hidden after leaving a fullscreen video, no matter the source. I've had it do this from VLC, WMP, and any player on Firefox and Chrome. As long as I don't enter fullscreen, the taskbar works correctly - displaying when the mouse hovers over it. After leaving fullscreen the taskbar then begins ignoring the mouse and the only fix so far has been using Ctrl+Esc to force the start menu to open and for some reason, the taskbar is reset and works again. The other way is to minimize whatever program I have up, click on the desktop to switch the focus and the taskbar returns to normal. While this does work everytime, I do find it rather frustrating and I would like to fix it. Any tips on where to begin looking for the problem would be much appreciated, thanks!

It sounds like a video issue. The card or chip may not have the required memory or processing power needed. But some times ungrading the video driver may fix the problem.

Hello All

I have an HP Pavilion p7-1254 (at least started as that, had some stuff upgraded, explained below), AMD A6-3620 2.2Ghz Quad Core with AAHD2-HL board; save you the time of looking it up if needed. Rarely I notice the system will stutter once or twice before totally freezing, happens in a couple seconds. But mostly, it just stops. When it freezes, the only option is to hard reboot.

I have had this problem for quite some time, probably about a year or two. At first I really didn't notice any consistency in the crashes, seems totally random. Some times it would freeze while browsing any random page, be it videos, forums, ad ridden or ad free. Any browser as well; Chrome, Firefox, IE. It also crashes when playing some games although not other games that have higher requirements; e.g. Guaranteed to crash, probably within 10 mins, if I play '8-bit Boy' on Steam (about as low res as implied) but I can go on 4 and 5 hour binges on Elder Scrolls Online or Skyrim with no crashes. I have recently noticed that YouTube videos (any video) is a guaranteed crash within a 20-30 seconds.

I've had this problem for about 3 years. I've replaced so many parts and i'm still getting the same problem.

so basically, during games or streaming videos, my computer might freeze sometimes.
Its a custom built computer from 6 years ago. Here's some specs.
Windows7 Ultimate 32x
AMD athlon 64 x2 dual core 6000+ 3.00ghz
4.00 gb memory (only 3.5 is usable because of 32x)
Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS

Okay so basically, the games i'm playing do not even take high end stuff to begin with (Heroes of Newerth / Left 4 dead 2 / Starcraft2)

And sometimes, it randomly freezes, the only way to turn it back on is hold down the power button to turn if off and turn it on again.

I have replaced the PSU 3x already (its a corsair 650w now. My first PSU that came with the computer was a thermaltake 500w did not even have problems unitl after 2 years.)

I have gotten more ram. (i started at 2gb and now i'm at 4gb)
I have ran many scans and everything seems to be alright but my computer still freezes.

And i have gotten more fans cause i thought it wasn't cool enough.

But i discovered something. Is it possible that my computer isn't getting enough energy from the outlet? Here is a speedfan picture

My temp is normal and never ever goes past 81c even while playing and is 60c at idle.

But the voltage on the 12v line is REALLY disturbing me. Is it possible that, that is the problem?
And sometimes it alternates between 7.44v and 9.50v but it never goes higher than... Read more

A:Computer Freezes during games or streaming videos

Hi Icehism,

Any number of faults could cause this issue, the PSU might not output the power it needs, drivers can stop working, devices can stop responding due to hardware/software faults, it can basicly be anything.

I would recommend you to take a look in the eventlog (Start > Search > eventvwr.msc > Hit enter) under the systems log (and the other ones aswell for that matter) and see if you find any reoccuring faults at all, if so, paste them here. And also check around the time it last happened, see if any error reports were made.

If you don't feel comfortable doing that, you could export the log and attach it to your next post for us to look at.

Hello. I recently formatted my computer since the harddrives started to fill up quite good. And I thought it would be nice to have a fresh install again.
But now I kinda regret it...

I'm gonna give you as much info as I can here, so the post might get a bit long.

Here are my system specs directly from dxdiag:

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.8GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680
Complete DxDiag uploaded.

So I put in my windows 7 installation disk and restarted the computer. Then I completely cleaned the harddrives and istalled it. But after I had installed several updates from Windows Update and installing drivers I went on to youtube to watch a few videos.
But a few minutes in the computer completely froze until it recovered again after about 30 seconds.

I decided to look in the Task Manager to see the Processor usage, and every time it freezes all the cores spike up to 100%.
Sorry for it being in Swedish, but you can compare it to your own if you need to.

So these are the things I have done to try and fix it:
1. Defragment all the harddrives
2. Use a cmd command called "sfc /scannow" to scan for errors
3. Use the installation disks repair tool
4. Right click on the video and stop hardware acceleration(maybe poorly translated, I use chrome)
5. Go into windows safe-mode with internet. Worked perfectly there.
6. Run benchm... Read more

Ok, this all started when I had windows vista on my desktop computer Acer Aspire AM1641-U1521A, it was great everything was running smoothly, I was happy, but then after my mom put a password on the computer then forgot it, afterwards we got a restaurant and she moved all the internet connection to there. Since their was a tech support near by we took our password protected computer to him, then when we got it back he deleted everything and put it to windows 7, everything seemed ok until we got internet back at the house, now I downloadeded all my Mmos and played on one of them, S4 league, the FPS rate was so low and I did not know why. It wasn't the connection, I am using comcast atm. After a bit of messing around I found that the coprocessor in the Device manager had a yellow triangle on it, I tried clicking on it then the computer tried to instal new softwar but did not then it sent me to this, and the download was in this link, http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windo...ce_winvista_win7_32bit_international_whql.exe
I did it and it downloaded 4 drivers for nvidia, one of them was ethernet I recall, but after that everything was worse, the computer was slowing down a little with choppy mouse movement, and when I go on youtube videos, anything over 240-360p would cause major video lag and I think my Mmo frame rate got worse (And maybe download speed but I don't care that much). Any Ideas? I let you see my drivers,

Ive been emailing dell every day for 3 weeks now and they still have no answer for me. if i disable my sound device i can play video and play vanguard with no problem but as soon as i use sound i get the blue screen. My hunch is a compatibility issue with windows vista. Dell has replaced my video card and i still get it and ive downloaded current drivers for my vid card and sound card and used the windows update for any critical and security updates out there. Ive restored my comp to factory settings 5 times as per request of dell tech guys, and ive uninstalled the sound device then reinstalled it.

Does it also crash when you play games and watch movies on your PC? Or only when you watch online videos? If the former, you definitely need to have your video card checked, perhaps on a different system. Also make sure your Power supply is adequate for the card. The latter: Could be Adobe Flash related. Not installed properly or hardware acceleration option enabled/malfunctioning.Can't say much at this stage.

My problem is when I switch a video to full screen mode on the tv, as soon as I click on anything back on my laptop the video exits full screen. It's only a problem watching videos online on a web browser (I've tried it on both Firefox and IE8). From what I've been able to find out the problem is that when I click something else it takes the focus away from the video. So is there any way I can stop this from happening? or some other way I can keep videos in full screen and still work on my laptop?

A:using extended desktop, videos wont stay in fullscreen

most flash based videos ( like youtube or similar) wont stay in full screen if you click outside the browser window. unfortunately, this isn't really an error, it's just the way they function.

Hi people,

I wasnt sure where to put this thread as I'm really not sure whats causing this slightly strange problem so I apologise in advance if its in the wrong place

to the problem...

For some strange reason whenever I make a video file full screen I lose my "interface" I cant see the mouse cursor even when I move the mouse and moving the mouse also does not bring up the control panel of VLC or windows media player (I've tried both and the same happens with both programs)

I've checked the settings of both programs and checked my graphics card settings and drivers as well, I havent changed anything recently and theres nothing that jumps out at me to indicate why the videos would be hiding everything, it obviously makes it incredibly difficult to close the videos to the point where I had to shut down the pc at one point as I have to guess where the close button is OR spam the windows key + D and SOMETIMES that will minimise the media player for me but obviously without the control panel of the programs I cant change settings such as skipping to certain parts etc.

I know this is a bit of a strange problem but I just cant think what could be causing it!

Any help greatly appreciated!
