Slow running Laptop running on Windows XP

Q: Slow running Laptop running on Windows XP

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 510m with Windows Xp ....

It is about 5 or 6 yrs old and quite well used..

Unfortunately it is not running very well lately...

and it is slow at loading webpages at times...

but in particular on websites like yahoo..

I am lately having problems sending emails...

and running videos say on youtube in particular if I have
say more than 3 or 4 webpages open...
Often it will not play video if I have been using the computer
for sometime...

I even have problems posting on even on here....or other forums..
I often have to copy the wording ,open another page and paste.
and post on the 2nd page...to send a post..

Im not sure if it may be my wifi...or my computer....
although wifi appears connected.

Sometimes my computer crashes when using Adobe flash..

I have ran several Antivirus and spyware malware programs over the last few months..
such as Trend Micro...and Avira, Malwarebytes and Spybot...

My Disc is quite full..so this may be one of the reasons why I am having problems...
BUT I have had it almost full in the not too distant past and it had ran reasonably OK..
and I did not have the problems with yahoo or sending emails from yahoo...

sometimes the computer just freezes up completely..and I cannot turn it off as usual..
so I have to switch it off by unplugging it..

It runs reasonable if I only have a few webpages open..and usually after I have reloaded it.

BUt it takes a long time to reload...and I get somethings that show up that I have to close before
it opens fully... such as a couple of wizard or new hardware banners show up that should not in
my opinion...

If anyone can help me to improve its performance..I would appreciate it..

Thank you

Preferred Solution: Slow running Laptop running on Windows XP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Toshiba Satellite  running windows 7. I got the computer from my father and had to remove a lot of malware and games. I wish i could do a factory reset but i do not have any of the factory disks. It seems like there are a lot of processes running and the physical memory is almost always at 100%. Any help would greatly be appreciated . Thanks in advance.

A:Toshiba laptop running super slow. physical memory running high

You can first try this:
Then you can try removing all the junk files on it using CCleaner or BleachBit or something similar. If that doesn't help, I would recommend dual booting this PC with Ubuntu 14.04. I actually published a tutorial on doing that here:
You could then use that as your primary OS.

My problem is the following: after a boot up, my laptop can find itself in two states, seemingly at random.
- runs fine: the laptop runs as it always did, no slowdown or anything.
- runs slowly: as the name implies, every program runs slowly, from Firefox to video games (offline, so it's not just an internet connection issue).
As far as I can tell, which state the computer will settle in is set at boot up or wake up from hibernation mode. I've never seen my laptop go from "runs fine" to "runs slowly" while I was using it, even after running all day long. Same way, if it's in the "runs slowly" state it's noticeable as soon as I launch any program just after boot up, and it doesn't get better or worse after using it all day .
Another symptom I noticed recently is that as soon as I launch a game while in the "runs fine" state, I can hear both the CPU fan (shortly) and GPU fan (continuously) kick up a few gears, which I take to mean both CPU and GPU are put to use. This has always been the laptop's behaviour, even before this problem appeared. However, when playing a game while in the "runs slowly" state, the CPU fan will remain quiet and the GPU fan will only go a bit faster from time to time before returning to quiet speed. It seems as if the whole computer gets lazy and don't want to put any effort.
I first took notice of this whole behaviour around the end of March/beginning of April of this year, though in retrospect the "runs slowly" state may have shown up on... Read more

Ok, for the past few weeks, I had been getting a message that said a resource was missing, but I stupidly never wrote down what specifically was gone. It said that it could not open the Dell Dock because of it and windows explorer was running slow at times and restarting periodically. It did this for about three weeks, then, two nights ago, the computer froze, so I reset it, and it started on the green bar then black screen loop.

I tried running it in safe mode, no dice, and all other alternate boot options. It would hang up each time. Finally, I was able to get the system restore wizard up, this was earlier today, and reset the system to how it was 4 days ago. It actually opened Vista, but in low res mode and everything is painfully slow, except for the internet, which runs at normalish speeds.

Are there any possible causes or solutions for this?

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, and Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

Hi Jo - I tried to run HiJackThis but as soon as I clicked scan, this screen popped up:
For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.
If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.Stay with me. I made a thread about this about a month ago, but I did everything I was told to do and nothing changed.

This laptop is way too slow. The audio is just a big mess from the login screen and onward(really laggy and static-y). I ran some malware stuff and registry repair as suggested, in safe mode and normal mode, but nothing was fixed.
After a few hours, I gave up and dual-booted Ubuntu 10.04 and it worked perfectly. Speed was excellent, audio was too. The only problem is I just use PCs for gaming and chatting, and I can't do much gaming with Ubuntu.

So, any idea what could be the problem here? I even tried windirstats too see if any huge files that weren't supposed to be there were causing this, because I once had a problem on my own computer where I had this huge file that slowed down everything and wouldn't let me delete it until I did so in safe mode and then everything worked perfectly again.

also, at the boot up menu, there are two loaders. one for vista, one for windows 7. windows 7 just starts up 7, while the vista loader goes to some menu thing that looks like it was booted from a disc.

1.it has the options to reset to factory settings and format the C: drive
2.has the option to reset, but keep data

don't know if that helps at all, but yeah...

A:Laptop running windows 7 is too slow

What laptop do you have? Have you update to the latest audio drivers?

I had a simalar problem that i fixed previously that had this problem due to windows not be able to write data properly and trying enough times to cause the hard drive to be put into pio mode.
Can you go into the device manger, right click my computer and choose manage then device manager, right click on your hard drive, mine is under ide channel then ata channal 0, right click, choose advanced settings and it should say there what mode it is in.

BTW i'm not sure if this will be in effect for sata hard drives, but i'm pretty sure the laptop ifixed had a sata drive in it as it was quite new, if it doew say PIO tell me and we'll go from there.

I have a windows 7 laptop; HP Pavilion dm4-1160us. Computer purchased new in Nov 2010.  I upgraded to HDD 1Tb about 3 years ago. All O.K. with the new, larger HDD.  IT RUNS VERY SLOW! I have been living with it for over a month.  Slowness came on over a weeks time when it started.
All features still work, though.  Sometimes I go to Task Manager to see that a program is still loading or switching to a link I just clicked on.  I've ran C Cleaner and Malwarebytes and seem to have a very small change if any at all.
Any and all help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Hi, i have recently (around 4 weeks ago) upgraded my laptop to windows 8.1 and I have now found the laptop running very slow. Most of the times I am waiting around for the apps to start up, or waiting for it to respond to my actions i.e. typing, coding, editing images and its got to a stage where I am really getting frustrated.

I have a Sony Vaio SVS13 Model with the following spec:

Operating System
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
Intel Core i7 3540M @ 3.00GHz
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
6.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Sony Corporation VAIO (N/A)
VAIO_LCD ([email protected])
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (Sony)
1024MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE (Sony)
Kaspersky Anti-Virus

The problem I find is that (using Advanced System Care, part of Sony installed software) this shows me that the CPU is always running at 100% and I thought its time I try and work out what the problem is, as I keep getting delayed doing my uni work and im ending up spending more time on work.

I have read a few forums saying that Kaspersky tends to use up alot of CPU but i didnt find this issue when I had Windows 8 so not sure how to fix or find what the problem is.

If somebody could please advise would really appreciate it as would help me out alot.

Thanks in advance.

A:Toshiba Laptop with Windows XP home SP2-Running very slow

I need to add this some help would be very much appreciated.
When he asked me to help him the computer would also work for say about 10 min and then what ever you would be doing it would just shut down. If you tried to start it up again it would come on and then turn itself off again but if you let it sit for awhile to cool off it would restart and run for awhile and then shutdown again. I put a cd case under the front of the laptop to let some air under it and that did it . it runs as long as you want it to. I took the case out from under it and in a couple of min it shut down again. and to feel the bottom of the case it was really hot. So it will run if you put something under it. So I went to the Toshiba site and looked up the laptop and found that they have a heat problem with certain kinds of these lap tops that they will shut down. They get so hot in the upper right hand corner that they actually curl up I guess and by the way that is where the fan is under it on the upper right hand corner.(I did check the fan on the bottom and it is working) So I would like someone if they would be so kind as to look on the site where I went and help me to understand if I need a BIOS flash. So they say those laptops need a BIOS Update. but I can figure out if it is mine. I think it is but not sure.

This is what he has his laptop
The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A65-S126
model PSA60U-02K-15

This laptop was given to me by a friend and it was loaded with viruses including the winzip registry optimizer rouge anti virus. I used the prior knowledge I had to clean that out along with other registry issues and viruses. Yet, the laptop still runs really slow, and whenever the Pokki start button or bar is clicked, it freezes and the desktop vanishes. As far as I know, Pokki was preinstalled on here, and I know it's been used to replace the missing start bar in WIndows 8. What can I do to fix this thing?

Ok guys, I purchased this laptop a few months ago so its not getting old or anything, I decided to format the harddrives (C) and install Vista again because of a virus.

I then installed all of windows updates and drivers i could find on dells website. (I'm not sure if i missed one).
Before the reformat, I could run the windows Aero theme and run many programs without a freeze and multi-task alot. Ever since the reformat, even after reinstalling the drivers (to which i know of), i have to run the theme at (basic) and turn off all aero themes and make sure i only run one program in the taskbar. Whenever i watch a video on Media Player it stutters every 1-3 minutes basically freezing then replaying after 6 seconds.

All i know is i could do all of this stuff before reformatting and theres no reason it shouldn't be doing now.

This happened to me last week so i decided to reformat and install Vista again, it happened again after a few hours. The weird thing is that it comes and goes, it'll either happen after a random time or straight away from start up. it usually happens when im watching a video, its like the memorys full.

Also, i only used the discs dell provided and the drivers on dells website throughout all of this.

The drivers i installed were:

A:Laptop running extremely slow after format C: and reinstall windows 7

Hello and welcome Andreas now mate when you say you formatted the drive I am wondering if the format process has really got rid of everything on it . A better way of doing the install would have been - a factory reset which of course would leave you with a ton of their bloatware or doing a "clean" or "clean all" via the command prompt or even a Partition Wizard - wipe drive but you would have needed to do that on another machine.

You could send the BSOD files - use this Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD this will help pinpoint errors.

But first up try these in safe mode
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
and see if the problem clears.

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

If there are any personal files, pics, etc. on your computer you cannot live without, back them up now just as a precaution.

I don't have any real idea of what the problem could be at this point. I have tried uninstalling unnecessary programs without any change in the way that the computer is behaving. HijackThis won't post a log file and also says that I have been denied write access to the Hosts file.  Any suggestions?

I have installed superanti spyware and that found some stuff to delete, Im quite computer illiterate, the internet is running at about 4 or 5 for speed and it should be 8 according the internet provider, they said everything is fine from their end, however I may have programs running on the computer that shouldnt be and are slowing it down, Im not sure if this is a spyware issue, virus, program not needed? Under the windows task manager the system idle process is 98 under the cpu, everything else is 0, I dont know if that makes a difference?

Recently my computer has started booting up very slowly, and after it boots up the CPU or the fan (not sure which) stayed revved up. If I check the task manager idle system process is running at 98-99% all the time. I know this is a measure of how often the CPU is idle, but I don't recall it always being so high.

If I start the task manager as soon as my computer lets me when I boot up all my CPU is going to idle system process for some reason, instead of booting things up.

Its been awhile, but I seem to recall that some problems can make it look like idle process time when in reality something else is actually wrong.

I get random lag when I open a program. Firefox for example, will load just fine, but then I try to click something and the computer momentarily freezes. Its not just Firefox though, it happens when I open up "My Documents" or Pidgin or anything.

I ran Microsoft Security Essentials, Malware Bytes, and Spybot S&D, all of them came back clean.

I would post stuff from Belarc Advisor here, but it keeps hanging on the "Checking local network of this computer." part at 54%.

I'm not sure where to go from here. :(

A:Computer Suddenly Running Slow - Random Hangups and Fan Running

I finally got Belarc to respond and finish.

EDIT:: I can't attch the .html file. How do you all prefer it to be presented?

Hi,After performing these scans, enter the results in your next post and also update me on the status of the PC.Note: You may have to perform some or all of the following in Safe Mode With Networking, depending on if you have internet access while in the normal Windows environment. If you still don't have internet access in Safe Mode With Networking, you will need to download the installers onto a flash drive from a working computer and transfer them to the problem PC.Also, if you have any of the following programs already installed on your machine, download the latest version along with updates, then run the scan.================================================================================Download Security Check by screen317 from here or here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.================================================================================Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware FreeDouble-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use SUPERAntiSpyware to scan and remove malware from your computer Guide. An icon will be created on your desktop. My laptop is running very slow, sometimes it takes 2/3 minutes to log on from the log on prompt (seemingly starting up numerous programmes in the background), also problems with IE, sub menus on favourites sometimes do not open on their own and more worringly the view/text changes size on it's own.

I have done the first steps as requested, I had problems running GMER (twice stopped working and twice laptop crashed) I do not have access to an install disc or boot CD, any help much appreciated.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop that has been gradually getting slower and slower to the point where I almost can't use it now. It started getting slower about three months ago when I noticed that games were running slower. Eventually everything stopped working and now opening a folder and moving it around my screen causes my cpu usage to jump to over 70%. My Hijack This logs were fine, I cleaned my fan with compressed air, formatted all drives and reinstalled Windows. My laptop doesn't feel unusually warm or anything, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello All,
Have just joined and this is my first posting.

Have a Compaq Presario V2000, WIN XP HOME EDITION VERSION 2000 With SP2, Intel Pentium 4 1.7GHz with 224MB Ram and 60 GB hard drive (divided into 2).

Start up is fine but the moment you open any programme it takes a hell of a lot of time to run and within a minute or so of starting up there is a 'tick tick' noise from the machine.
However, if I open in Safe Mode - the computer works fine and there is no such weird noise.

Have tried all sorts of things - defrag, scandisk, pc pitstop check up (which was fine) etc no luck.

In Device Manager shows Yellow exclammn. mark at - Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter #2. Have tried to uninstall it - no luck as message says cannot be uninstalled as maybe needed for booting.

Moreover cant even system restore - fails every time.

Many thanks

Hope someone could throw some light.

A:Laptop running slow

I have a laptop that seems slow to open programmes, shutting down, starting up etc

It was ok until I had a bug and had to format completely. Ever since then it has been slower and sluggish.

I defrag regularly, I maintain msconfig so that nothing untoward is starting up. I scan the system once a week with Ad Aware, Spybot, Windows Defender scans daily. It has Spywareblaster and SpywareGuard installed and updated regularly.
I have Avast (scans once a week) and Zone Alarm free installed.
After running HJT, there doesnt seem anything amiss, and my scans show nothing.

Is there anything else I can do to liven it up a bit?

Did you install the drivers when you reinstalled XP? You can check by going into Device Manager (Start...Run...type in "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter). Look for any red x's or yellow !'s - those are indicators that the drivers may not be installed or working correctly. After that, run this free System Information utility (doesn't require installation) and post the results here for us to have a look at: http://www.gtopala.com/index.html I'm sure we'll have plenty of recommendations after that.

A:slow running laptop

Over time Windows systems slow down--boot takes longer as well as other operations. Reasons include extra processes running, Registry corruption, disk errors, etc. I've seen advice to do a fresh install of Windows every year to avoid this. Others run applications that are supposed to "clean" your system and disable seldom used services and search for other problems.

My own habit is to try to fix individual problems but as soon as I get 2 or 3 that I have to live with, or the boot time gets excessive, I make sure I have my drivers and have all needed data backed up, do a disk check, format the disk, install Windows, etc. I recently did that on my Dell laptop and cut the boot time by 1/3.

CA accounts for many of your running processes. I would consider a much lighter alternative.

You still have traces of Symantec in there you should remove with the Norton Removal Tool. Run the tool at least twice.

You should also trim down your Startup programs and running processes like you did in your previous post:

And, RAM is not an issue here. You have plenty for XP.
