Using PC as a stereo receiver

Q: Using PC as a stereo receiver

Here is my situation. I have 5.1 surround sound speakers connected to my pc. I decided it would be nice to be able to run the ps3 through the surround sound for blu-rays and gaming without having to buy a whole new surround sound system. The setup that I have now sounds great for stuff on my pc. However, my pc didn't have an optical audio input so I got a usb device with optical audio in. Here is the problem that I'm having. I can get the sound to play through the speakers using vlc but there is quite a bit of latency. I've looked into using asio4all to try and eliminate the latency problem but I can't find a program that will let me use asio while directly playing the sound from my optical audio input. I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to either eliminate the latency in vlc or a program that I could use to directly play the input either without lag or using asio to try and eliminate it. Anyone have any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Using PC as a stereo receiver

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Using PC as a stereo receiver

Hmmm, I would probably look for an audio card with a digital optical input and bypass the USB conversion.

Win 7 hooked with HDMI to STR-DG1000 audio receiver. Windows detects equipment and installs microsoft "High definition audio device" driver. Go to configure speakers and only two channel stereo is available. Tried installing soundcard drivers and video card drivers, but HDMI port defaults to Microsoft driver. Does this mean my soundcard doesn't allow anything but stereo over HDMI?

I just purchased the program called Cool Edit Pro, and wish to record my old records onto CD with my CD Burner. I am using an older Onkyo Stereo Receiver, and professional turntable, Polk Audio Speakers. However, I cannot correctly hook up the receiver to be able to record and play from Cool Edit. I hooked up the receiver on the EPS Main Connector with RCA Phono Plugs, but the RCA Plugs don't really fit into the Sound Card Ports on the back of my Compaq Presario. I also tried connecting to one of the tape ports on the receiver, didn't work at all. When connected to the EPS, I can pick up the radio tuner, it plays fine. But, it seems nothing is being read by my computer. Do I have the wrong connectors? What ports should I use? HELP! 8^)

Laptop: Sager NP9150
Receiver: Sony STR-K850P
Audio: Realtek HD
Connection: SPD/F Optical Cabe
Listening mode: AFD Auto - runs everything as 2.1

Issue: when I know I'm utilizing a 5.1 source, the receiver only auto-detects 5.1 sound from DVD movies. Sources such as Netflix streaming and Steam games do not detect as 5.1.

I've run a few tests and for Netflix, I think the answer is as simple as selecting whatever Dolby flavor I think is applicable (Dolby ProLogic I or II, etc.) That seems to work fine.

For games, I'm less certain. I've read that games do not send 5.1 audio over SPD/F optical. The tests that I've run seem to indicate that in games, when I force a Dolby format with the receiver, it just sends the audio to all the speakers. In movies (DVD or netflix) I can (I think) tell that the individual speakers seem to be doing different things.

So, anyway - I apologize if this is all very confusing.

One thing I've hit on, is that I can use a hacked Realtek HD driver that allows me to force Dolby Digital Live. What is that? How does it work? Right now, it just seems to be muddying the waters.

I have no audio, but when I go to (right-click sound icon in tray) --> Playback Devices --> Playback tab --> right click "Speakers / Headphones Realtek High Definition Audio" --> Configure, then in Speaker Setup dialog:
* If I select Quadraphonic in the "Audio channels" list, I hear sound for the RL (rear-left) and RR (rear-right) speakers, with my stereo speakers plugged into the black jack in back. I cannot get sound when testing the regular L and R speakers in Quadraphonic mode; I've tried all 5 jacks.
* When I select Stereo, then clicking L or R speaker icon to test results in no sound, again no matter which of the 5 jacks i plug my stereo speakers into.
* So the only way I have sound is in Quadraphonic mode, but only for the back speakers. Therefore I cannot hear regular stereo output from applications, such as Youtube in Chrome.
This seems like a bug, or a highly unintuitive aspect of Realtek's or Dell's software at best. Any ideas on how to solve? (Beside buying full surround sound speakers)

hi quick question, when ripping songs from cds should you use stereo or joint stereo. i noticed that no matter which 1 u use, the file size remains the same.

i would like to know whick one gives u the best quality and such....i want my songs to sound the way they do on the cds without losing any information.

A:Solved: Stereo or Joint Stereo?

If you want a technical answer look here

(it starts a bit flamey, but gets more interesting towards the end)

As for which to use, thats really a personal choice, many will say to go for true stereo, because that is more like the original. However, that isn't necessarily true. It is possible to recreate the original sound via joint stereo (all my music is stored in lossless format and uses JS), and JS performs better under compression than true stereo. Therefore, JS should out perform Stereo in any given amount of data, or, if the quality is the same, the JS compression will give more data to other parts of the track. (I hope that makes sense).

You need to bear in mind that there is only so much data to provide for the track, good compression concentrates the data where it is needed. JS allows more data to be used by more important or noticeable elements in the track.

Of course the best way to find out is to test it yourself and run ABX tests.

Foobar2000 is a good tool to do ABX tests. Try to use quality audio equipment

Doing these tests will show you what your ears find is the best system, which is what it really comes down to.

Hi, just had Malware Virtumonde successfully removed from my pc, gratefully with the help of TSG in the other forum!

Anyway something that has also been happening recently is when I go to restart or shut down, XP.COM Event Receiver program ending box comes up and even if I click on End Now, it sometimes won't then allow me to shut down.

I Googled it and it seems to have been a problem in 2005/06 with a newer version of Mozilla Firefox...but not recently. I use Mozilla Firefox as a browser.

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this?

Hi Guys

I was wondering if someone could give me a bit of advice. At the moment my computer is connected to a Netgear router which I use to connect to the net. Both my kids computers are also connected to the router, and we all share the connection. My LAN is wired not wireless, and my router is only a couple of months old and hasn't caused me any problems (so far)so I don't want to replace it. The thing is I am going to buy a laptop with wireless capabilities, and want to be able to use it downstairs without having to run a cable from the spare port on my router. So basically my question is this; is there some kind of wireless receiver available which i could plug into my router and allow me to surf from the comfort of my sofa? If it is possible, would doing this present the same kind of slight security issues which a wireless LAN do, eg someone using my connection? Second small question. As I said we all share the connection, and I wondered if it is possible to limit the amount of bandwidth each of the kids use. If one of them is downloading a game patch for example, and I go online the connection is quite slow. Is it possible to set a maximum bandwidth allocation for example 33% of the available amount, or make the value dynamic so if someone else connects, the bandwidth is split between the 2 or 3 users?

Thanks for any help

So, I built an HTPC equipped with the ATI All-in-wonder HD PREMIUM TV tuner card. I am running Windows 7 Professional. Everything is installed correctly and functions correctly, I only run into issues when trying to set up WMC.

I have my FiOS set-top-box hooked to my tuner hard and my tuner card hooked to my tv via HDMI. WMC detects my signal and proceeds to configure itself to work with my set-top-box...until I get to a screen that tells me "Cannot detect IR receiver". Then the setup process cannot proceed and i am forced to cancel setup.

After much googling, I am now aware than the IR receiver WMC is not being able to detect is simply a windows media center remote control....but i have one....and it works!! It came with my ati card along with a USB IR receiver. I plug the receiver in, windows installs the drivers, nd the controller works. Sine the controller works perfectly, i cannot undersand why WMC stil cannot detect an IR receiver. Am I missing something? is there a receiver that needs to also be plugged into my set-top-box (and if there is, i guess i can thank ati for not including it with my card)? There is an input on my FiOS box called "IR Receiver Input"

Does anyone have experience with windows 7 and WMC, because it seems there may beanswers for vista and xp, but i have yet to see anyting about 7.

ALSO, if I eliminate the set-to-box, WMC works fine, so it is something to do with this box.

Aside from that, is the volume control turned up? Is there any type of 'MUTE' on the receiver?

Last, you might also be able to receive a bit of technical assistance from the place of purchase.

Hi, I've recently had a truckload of problems hit my laptop; The back-lights in the screen smashed, the power supply broke (This always happens though >_>) The entire screen fell off. However these problems have been..... mostly, resolved. (And hopefully this one will too).

The problem is that when I plug in the power supply to the power receiver? No power is transfered at all or power is transfered but only when I press down in the inputer (Thing that connects power to supply), or or Power is transfered normally :/ But this rarely happens.

I think it may be the metal in the receiver has rusted or been shifted so in so that it does make connect with the metal in the inputer... Any help on how to fix this/what the problem actually is?

P.S This has happened with another laptop in my household too. That is also a Toshiba (Which I haven't mentioned >_>)

the motherboard and needs the be replaced.

I tried to reconnect, no success.

This is REALLY bugging me, I've manually installed the windows drivers, ive tried XBCD nothing works.

From what I understand there is no problem with the receiver or the controller itself it's the drivers. I agree with that because when I bought the receiver and plugged it in, windows wouldnt install any drivers, and I was unable to connect anything. I then manually installed the microsoft drivers for the receiver and voila, I connected instantly.

Anyways, what the hell. Why would my controller stop connecting? Ive tried 3 usb port's ive tried 2 different drivers. Microsoft and XBCD neither work. (XBCD I install the driver and then the application wont open...)

Any help? This is bugging the hell out of me

Edit: I dont think I installed anything especially not anything that would interfere with this driver.

Ill try the dongle on another computer see if it works over there.

Hello all, I feel a bit sheepish coming here with such a common "novice" issue however, it seems it is a fairly extensive, less user-error oriented problem than I was hoping for.

I have 5 logitech devices I am trying to connect to my machine. (Well, actually only 3 but 2 kb/mouse combos) and, I have had this setup before, many times however cannot get it to work.

The receiver that came with my Logitech 650 deluxe keyboard just WILL NOT work in Windows. I can use my keyboard in the BIOS, I can use it on my iBook, I can even use it on another windows 7 Pro x64 machine but it just won't work with the machine I am stuck using primarily.

The Devices I have are:
2 Logitech wireless Keyboards
-650 Deluxe
2 Logitech wireless mice
1 Logitech M510 w/ unifying receiver
1 Logitech C-BT44 Receiver (came with 650 deluxe)
1 Logitech receiver unknown (had to fix this bad boy...previous owner cut the cord to deter others from using it)

The unknown receiver works with either keyboard/mouse (not the m510 obviously) which, seeings as they all share the same frequency (RF 2.4GHz) is obviouse why they work together. BUT, NONE of the keyboards work on my primary box with the C-BT44 receiver within windows. Again, I can use that receiver in the BIOS, Both normal lights are on (F and Num lock) along with my 650 deluxe but, it just doesn't work in windows. It USED to work in windows. A:ehome receiver not found in HID

The driver is built into Vista- if it is not showing up it is possible that it is 'hidden' - go to view and select Sow hidden devices. If you can now see it and it (perchance) has an Error Code 10 (Device not currently connected) then try plugging the transceiver into another USB port - if it still doesn't work try another computer.

Either the receiver is bad, or your USB port(s) is(are) bad, or your operating system is going slowly to pot.

It will allow the laptop to act as a TV for local VHF/UHF Analog TV signals, but please be aware that for any "computer based TV adaper or card, a good TV antenna is always required. Indoor antennas may give disappointing results in many cases.

Alrighty. I've scoured the internet for solutions to this problem, and they all point me in the same direction: system restore. For whatever reason, my computer can't complete a sys restore successfully (I'll probably post about that elsewhere). That in mind, can anyone help me with this:

I recently purchased a wireless receiver so I could play PC games with my 360 controller. I innocently installed the software the installation CD referred to me. Picked all the right options. Etc, etc. When I plugged it in, my USB wireless mouse stopped responding. I ignored that for the moment, and tried connecting a controller. Didn't work. The rings lit up like they had found a receiver, but then went back to all quadrants flashing. Ad infinitum.

So I restarted. :[ My USB keyboard and my monitor wouldn't respond.

Later, I read some articles about needing to sys restore and just plug the thing in and let Windows figure it out and install drivers. Well, I can't do that. My main question is, is there a way to go in and delete the reg files or drivers for the software I installed? Or do I need to fix the sys restore problem and do all that again?

Haaaaalp. ;___;

(Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that I may be posting this in the wrong place. Lemme know if this is true)

Oh, system info: Windows Vista 32bit OS, if any more info is needed let me know.

So for a school project I needed to learn how to turn a LED on and off with a remote, using an arduino. I read on the internet that I need to know the values of my remote first (using the Samsung BN59-01198Q) so I downloaded IRlibrary, a program that should give me those values. I connected my arduino to my laptop and opened the IRRecvDemo, upload it to my arduino too. But it isnt showing values while I am using my remote. It is the first time that I work with arduino so this may come off as incredibly stupid, but what am i doing wrong?
