Help with freezes on Dell Vostro 1400

Q: Help with freezes on Dell Vostro 1400

I have a Vostro 1400 which runs with Vista Business.

It has stopped working properly all of a sudden. It starts up ok, I enter my password ok and it goes onto my desktop ok. But when I click on anything, whether it be an icon or the Start menu, it just freezes.

It's working fine in Safe mode. I've tried System Restore and CCleaner.

I have a feeling it might be when I tried to plug in a camera into the USB when it was shutting down (I didn't know it was shutting down). It might not be that, but that's when it started.

Help anyone???

Sarah

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The hard drive may have bad sectors. It is going to be hard to check it using Checkdisk, because you can't get to where the check is. Are there any drive utilities available in the bios or right before boot up?

A:Which one is best OS for Dell vostro 1400 ???

This usually ships with Vista basic - which is as much use as a chocolate teapot. You can upgrade to vista premium or bite the downgrade bullet and take it to an OS XP Home or PRo that is established with at least 3 service packs. You don't include any specs - so answers may be vague as a result. Give us PC info. and we may be ale to help.

I have a Dell vostro 1400 laptop. I am running Windows Vista.

When I plug my power adapter into my computer, I get the error message:

The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation.

I am using the adapter that came with the laptop when I purchased it about 15 months ago. The laptop still runs off of the charger and so it functions when it is plugged in, but the battery itself is dead. My battery health is good and nothing is broken off of my charger. Please help me!

Hi,

I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro on my Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. Everything works fine except I can't hear any audio from my speakers. When I plug in the earphones then audio works fine.
I previously had Windows 8.1 and the speakers worked flawlessly there. Now when I tried to install the http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=NN9X1&fileId=3327213123&osCode=WW1&productCode=vostro-1400&languageCode=EN&categoryId=AU it threw an " Error: ExitError:Error=Device Object not present ". I tried uninstalling the current drivers, then reinstalling them but that didnt work. I think if I could get the Sigmatel audio drivers installed then my audio would be back but I wasn't able to fix this error.
If anyone has any ideas how to fix this I would really appreciate it!
Thanks,
Tim

That's an XP driver. Win10 is supposed to work with Win7 and 8.1 drivers, so Win10 might not be a good fit with the Vostro 1400. Try the Vista version, Sigmatel R171786. Download the driver package and extract the files (unzip or unpack and make a note of the name of the folder that is created) but cancel the installation process. Go to the folder on the hard drive to which you unpacked the driver files which should bec:\Dell\Drivers\R171786
Find the setup.exe file and right click on it. Select the Properties. Find the compatibility tab and select Vista.
If still no luck then I would advise you to revert to Win8.1.

Hi,

I'm in the process of replacing the screen on my old Dell Vostro 1400. However, as I would like to buy it used (for obvious reasons) it's hard to find the exact part number I want at the right price so I was wondering which part numbers would be a good replacement the part number on my current screen is LTN141W1-L09 (Dell Part Number: 0DM110). Firstly, I was wondering what the part after the hyphen meant in the model Number. Also, can I replace this screen with one with a lower resolution or different aspect ratio?

I've also noticed that latitude D600 series shares a lot of hardware with the Vostro 1400 would any screen from there be compatible?

Thanks for reading

A:Replacing Screen On Dell Vostro 1400

I would think that when you replace a screen it should be the exact same one as the original. you might find what you need on ebay as im sure someone might be selling one for parts or repair only.ive never replaced screens yet in my laptops because by the time they have gone bad it was more to fix it than the computer was worth.you might also check with a computer repair place they might have what you are looking for or tell you where to find the correct screen for that model.

I'm unable to get the in-built bluetooth function working on Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. I have perused Dell forums to no avail. I have downloaded the machines bluetooth driver & have located a couple of patches via said forum but all to no avail.

I've uninstalled & re-installed the Widdcomm software too even via a direct route by drilling down to the folders in the OS in my case it's C:\dell\drivers\R140135\3100_216\Win32 & have even tried utulising the laptop's drivers cd to load bluetooth from that. Again no luck.

Anyway thanks for looking in & if there are some Dell engineers taking a look here then I appreciate any help you may have also.

I disabled popup and popdown, disabled c4, tried HLT.. no luck anywhere. Whine is not just in Windows, as soon as cpu starts the Whine starts. Thoughts?

I've been working on attempting to fix my girlfriends Dell Vostro 1400 notebook and I've been running into too many brick walls.

First off, the computers specs:

When I got the laptop from her I booted it up and there was no video, just a blank screen. It indicates HDD activity but nothing displayed. I then tested out the PSA boot method through the beep sequences. It came up with an optical drive error, which I can really doubt. I've unmounted the optical drive and thoroughly inspected it, but I couldn't imagine it being the problem here.

I then hooked it up through my PC external monitor, and got some video out of it. It goes through the boot start up and then hangs for a good 3-5 minutes before displaying an error message that reads:

***Hardware Malfunction
Call Your Hardware Vendor For Support
NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error
***The System Has Halted***

I reboot and attempt to enter any of the start up options but none seem to be operational. It takes about 5 minutes to enter BIOS setup and as soon as it loads it just display nonsensical coding. The same goes for the other boot options, though some are slightly different in appearances. I've attempted a full power drain on the laptop which didn&#... Read more

Now, it changes to 1024 x 800 when the computer is put to sleep and the awakes. I can set it back to 1200 x 800 and it works fine. Anyone have any ideas? It is small so it drives me a little nuts.

Dear Tech Guys,

I'm admittedly not great with computers but I'm trying to learn, so here we go:

I'm having trouble connecting to the wireless network in my new home using Windows Vista on a Dell Vostro 1400. Confounding factors:

1) My roommates are connecting without any problems
2) The computer will connect occasionally, but just as frequently disconnects so I'm using internet through the wireless in frustrating 5 minute intervals and I never know when it will decide to shut off or on again. It is incredibly spotty.

My boyfriend tried to fix it a few days ago and I'm not sure what he did or if it affected anything, but for the past few days the wireless hasn't connected at all, even for a few minutes like it was before.

3) The network sharing center shows me as being connected and getting great signal but it's clearly not. I tried all of the options it has given me---resetting network adapters, restarting the computer on multiple occasions, but it still gives the same feedback that "there is still a problem" basically.

I tried walking through some of this:
http://forums.techguy.org/networking/902843-solved-stuck-acquiring-network-address.html
and from what I can tell, everything LOOKS fine. In the past I have connected to other wireless networks without issue, though things on my computer may have changed since then...but I doubt it.
I'm not sure what to do, I have scoured the internet but to no avail. Can anyone h... Read more

My 4 year old Dell vostro 1400, a carryover from my son's college days, has stopped reading and writing DVDs, though it reads and writes the CDs perfectly.

I replaced the DVD drive with a new Optiarc internal DVD writer. This new Optiarc has worked for about six months and then again same problem not reading and writing DVDs only.

Is the problem with the DVD writer or with the laptop? I am apprehensive to replace the DVD writer again.

By the way the OS is Windows XP professional.

A:Dell Vostro 1400 laptop internal DVD writer not reading/writing DVDs..

Normally it can be attributed to the laser burning out. The drive uses a different wavelength to do CDs than DVDs. They often don't burn out like a light bulb but just can't do the higher wavelengths.

Optical drives are notorious for sudden failure. On a desktop it's no big deal - a $20 repair. But a laptop is expensive to do replacements on. I'd be bumming too.

Curious (dealing with a similar issue with a laptop here):
When you go into Device Manager and check the properties of that Optiarc drive, is the name 'garbled'?

Firstly this system is no tested with windows 10, we would not suggest you to force upgrade the system as you will not have the appropriate drivers for the same which will give you more issues.
We would suggest you to the install the same Operating system as it has been working fine with the system configuration.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to assist with a problem that suddenly started with my second computer (Dell Vostro 400)
Its running windows 7 home premium and all the sudden it now stops at the Dell bios version screen. It did this a couple times the lastfew days, but when I restarted it, it booted ok, but when I checked on it later then the computer was frozen again with a black screen.  I have borrowed another computer from work and swapped out the hard drive, and it works fine with the other computer (same hardware). So I dont think its the hard drive. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Most likely it's a video card problem, although it could be the cable to your monitor or the monitor itself.
Check to be sure that the fans are working and that there's not dirt/dust stuck inside (use canned air to blow it out - DO NOT use a vacuum or an air compressor, it'll cause damage)

My old Vostro 1400 display goes black shortly after startup.  External monitor works fine, and the image is visible on the screen if I shine a bright light on it.  So, I conclude that either the lamp driver or the bulb is bad, am going to try repairing but don't know where to get these parts.  Options for my computers tag don't show these parts.

A:Vostro 1400 Display Failure

You'd have to try EBay - - or replace both the screen and the inverter together, which is likely the best option.
There was once a time when replacing the bulb or inverter made economic sense because of the cost of LCD panels -- it no longer does.  You can easily replace the screen and inverter for well under $100.

When you say you "upgraded" your Vostro 1400, what upgrade did you perform?  If you replaced the GPU (assuming it's removable in that system) or replaced the motherboard with a version that has a different GPU built in (assuming that system was available with more than one GPU configuration), you'd need to download and install the correct drivers for your new hardware. You can find them at support.dell.com, although I would manually select your system model rather than entering your Service Tag.

Try installing the Sigmatel HD audio driver. There is not one for Windows 7 so you must use the Vista version and install using Vista compatibility mode.
Download the driver package using the browser, not Dell Download Manager. Extract the files (unzip or unpack) but cancel the installation process. Go to the hard drive to c:\Dell\Drivers\R171786   (This is the folder that is created when you unpack the download. It contains the driver files.)Right click on setup.exe and select Properties. Find the compatibility tab to select Vista.

Hey there everyone!

I'm having issues with a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop when it syncs with an iPhone. This laptop has already been replaced by Dell, but the new (and identical laptop, the HDD was switched) experiences exactly the same issue.

The issue

When the phone is plugged in to sync with the computer, multi-coloured lines appear up and down the screen and the previous content is no longer visible (or the screen goes blank, or the lines are horizontal). The only way to recover is to hard reboot the laptop.
Any ideas would be appreciated... should I try reinstalling the OS? Could the iPhone be faulty (I could try using another one)?

OK, this computer is around 4 yrs old. It has never really been problematic until recently (last week...). I noticed the mouse cursor freezing/jumping. I followed as much info as I could find like deleting files defrag, close running programs and other maintenance operations in the W7 software. Didn't seem to help. Only normal background stuff (as far as I can tell...) running. I rarely run more than one operation/program at a time beside anti-virus, etc.

Checked download of new mouse drivers but said drivers up to date. All else I could find (online) to assist the freezing issue - nothing seems to help. I also have a "duh-dunk" sound frequently for no reason I can find. It's the same noise I get when turning off the printer or shutting down a program. The thing is, I'm not doing any of these things and the noise just continues intermittently. I didn't know if this could be related to the mouse-cursor freeze/erratic operation. Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

I found this list on the Dell site that tells you whether they have tested a particular model for its ability to be upgraded to Windows 10.   The Dell Vostro 3550 is not on the list of about 20 Vostro models, some with lower model numbers ,  some higher.   Will they ever test it??
If you try to upgrade,  windows 10 copies files and then in the 2nd of the three major sections of the upgrade (where you have that big circle in the middle of the screen)  it just goes to a blank screen and then all disk activity ceases and it becomes well hung.   Of course now, the machine thinks its os is win 10 and you cannot go back to a win 7 recover point .  So you just lose all your data and apps and restore the factory image and then install 208 windows 7 updates and it takes like 8 hours in all.
Sounds like a similar problem that people had with Vostros going from win 7 to win 8.   Why not fix it.

A:Windows 10 Upgrade - why isnt Dell Vostro 3550 on the list from Dell ?

Well, after spending the better part of whole day trying to figure out why somebody else's Dell Vostro 3550 was not displaying anything after an even longer period of downloading the Windows 10 upgrade (from Windows 7 in this case) it turns out the fix required was to upgrade the BIOS to A11 (end of 2012).

Hopefully this might save someone a wasted day in their lives. Before this I spent some hours before figuring out that the machine was in fact booting - only the display was black. So then it was a matter of figuring out key strokes to use (blind) to shut down and also enable the menu for safe mode. Safe mode worked, and so then more hours trying to work around the issue before finally stumbling onto some stuff online where the BIOS upgrade was mentioned - apparently also an issue with Windows 8?

This steps to restore BIOS:
1.Get USB flash below 4Gb.

3.Get your flash update from Dell Store - xxxx.exe
4.Run cmd.exe and in command prompt run xxxx.exe /writehdrfile
5.Copy extracted Bios.cap to flash drive.
6.Turn off laptop.
Next step 7,8 may be not needed but I did it.
7.Disconnected all perihpericals including battery and charger.
8.Disconnect HDD
9.Plugged the usb drive on the laptop at the right side.
10.Hold END key
11,Pluged the powercord and relase the END key 1 second after the power cord is in.
12.USB led on stick blinked fast and we see Bios Recovery Process on screen.

I have done the custom settings for battery from dell power management. I have set that the battery should start charging when it is at 50% and stop charging at 80%. When the battery has charged 80%.It has stopped charging. But the discharging of the battery is not happening itself. I have to remove the ac power so that the laptop should start using battery instead of ac power. The battery should self discharge when it reaches 80% and start charging when it reaches 50%. which is not happening currently. Can any suggest any solution.

I bought my Dell Vostro 3800 ST almost 2 years ago, sadly I didn't really do my research before I bought it, and it turns out, card that came with it wasn't really great for gaming and it's nearing the end of it's life.
So I'm planning to buy proper card, but my tower is waaay to slim to fit in it comfortably.
So my question is, will I be able to take my motherboard to another, non-Dell case? If so, what type of case would be good? I did try to find online, what type of motherboard it is, but if there's an answer to that question, I can't find or understand it.
I'd be grateful for any help provided :)

A:Will my motherboard from Dell Vostro 3800 ST fit into non-Dell case?

It's more or less a micro-ATX board so it will likely fit a standard case.  That said, wiring the power switch, hard drive LEDs, etc. will be difficult - they're not standard and it may be a lot of trial and error to make work.

Hi zixzen,
Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum.
You can access the manual of both the system on our Dell Support site, which will give you the dimensions for the case.
If you have any other query, please private message us the service tag of the system along with your email id.

Dell Vostro 3700 Laptop running Windows 7 64-bit, Service Tag 4QD3ZM1.

NVidia identifies the display controller as GeForce GT 330M and gives the following message; but, there are no display drivers offered by Dell for this system, at least not by model or service tag numbers.

UpdateGeForce GT 330M--The manufacturer of this system requires that you download the driver for your GPU from their support site.

The GeForce M series and GeForce Go series notebook GPUs use drivers that have been customized by the notebook manufacturers to support hot key functions, power management functions, lid close and suspend/resume behavior. NVIDIA has worked with some notebook manufacturers to provide notebook-specific driver updates, however, most notebook driver updates must come from the notebook manufacturer. I apologise for the length and complexity of my problem. There are a lot of elements to it, and my ignorance shines through all of them. Also, I have a tendency to be a bit verbose.

I bought a second hand Dell Vostro 360 last year. When I got it, it was running windows 7, but I used the free upgrade to windows 10. It worked OK for a while, and then it started having boot problems. It would hang and give me a blank screen. I checked the disk and after a long while it came up with an error on the hard drive.
So I put it to one side for a few months.
My wife suffers from Menier's Disease, which as well as balance problems, has caused her to lose 100% of her hearing in one ear, and over 70% in the other. Her hearing loss is degenerative, in that it gets worse over time. She hasn't been able to listen to music for four or five years, and we haven't had a real conversation for about four years.
We have started using Google Docs Dictation, on a laptop, and it's great. So much better than nothing. There are problems but the improvement in our life is phenomenal. We decided that it would be good if we could use the Dell Vostro 360 all-in-one as a dedicated machine. I would hang it on the wall, (next to the TV), buy a wireless microphone, get it to react to voice commands (sleep, wake) and make the text large enough etc so that she can read it as she does with sub-titles. All of which I should be capable of.

However the first thing I need to do is to get the Vos... Read more

A:Dell Vostro 360

The Dell Vostro 360 All-In-One Desktop appears to originally come with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
What's the exact 7-character "service tag" number on yours?

Buying a second-hand 2 TB SATA hard drive on eBay wasn't a good idea because you have no way of knowing what condition it's in and how soon it'll fail.

If that Dell was already running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit before you started having issues with it, doing a clean install and getting a fresh start would be a good idea.
If you download and save the Media Creation Tool, then use it to download and save the appropriate Windows 10 .ISO file, then burn it to and create a bootable install DVD, you'll be good to go.

The "Fall Creators Update" Version 1709 Build 162xx upgrade will be released next month, so that means a new updated Media Creation Tool will made available, so you may want to wait until then before doing a clean install of Windows 10.

Hi

I have a question on Dell Vostro all in one 360 desktop RAM upgrade. On user manual it says max memory allowed is 8GB, however I downloaded Dell System Detect which says max memory allowed is 32GB.

Currently it has 6GB in total (1 x 4GB and 1 x 2GB).

Which one should I trust?

Thanks

My Dell Vostro 260 is getting a message on startup saying that Windows failed to start, giving me two options: launch startup repair, or start Windows normally. When you select startup repair, it just goes to a blank screen for all eternity, and when you try to launch Windows normally it freezes at the very beginning of the Windows logo thing. Please help

A:Dell Vostro 260 help

Reboot and immediately press F12. Look for the option to run the Diagnostics. Run the extended hard drive tests. Copy the error message, if any...
If no HDD errors, you may have to repair Windows (what version?) using a bootable USB stick...
Sure hope your personal files are backed up on external media!

I could really use some help with this. I've searched all over the net and there isn't a real solution to this. Most threads are closed or never answered. I have a Dell Vostro 1510 and everything works fine but when doing things fast or under high cpu load my trackpad locks up for a second and if I try to keep using it it will trail slowly until I stop for a second then go and it works again. Something is temporarily locking it up and it can be very annoying during some things.

It is a Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad. Using "device driver update" produced no new hardware that matched better than what I have currently. The funny thing I noticed is the device drivers for my model on Dell doesn't match what I have..

http://goo.gl/9Cc53

None of those 3 under Keyboard/Mouse match what I have. Or do they? I matched the synaptic version and it didn't match anything there. Here is a list of my shipped system specs:

A:Vostro 1510 Touchpad/Trackpad Freezes Randomly

Ran the Dell diagnostics and using the symptom tree I ran the 2 tests that fit this issue (I guess it's a real common problem for it to be standard in the system tree) and it didn't detect any errors/issues. All passed. By the way, to clarify what I meant by High CPU Load I was speaking of the cylinder light on the keyboard dash. I think that's actually for the HDD not CPU. So again it seems to happen when the hdd is already under load.
