Computer running slow despite having a high speed internet connection for some reason

Q: Computer running slow despite having a high speed internet connection for some reason

Hi there,

My computer has been running slow for few months now despite having a high speed internet connection. I have tried to fix it by having its set up changed. It didn't fix the problem. It was working fine but one day it suddenly started running slow. At first I thought it must be a problem with the servers of my network provider but that wasn't the case. I've called the cable company to check several times but they said other users were able to use internet in full speed without any problem. I noticed the problem by trying to watch videos from various websites and after this problem occurred, they started loading super, super slowly. It has gotten to a point that I can no longer watch TV shows, movies, and other videos. The only video website that works is YouTube and even that doesn't function completely normally. Only most YouTube videos work without getting stuck too much. Another thing which I must mention is that quite often the internet cuts off in midst of browsing sessions and it doesn't reconnect without restarting the computer. My computer is a Dell laptop pc with Intel core i5 processor. I suspect that maybe my LAN card has worn out and it needs to be replaced. Although, I have been told by some computer technicians to not to do so. But they weren't able to give me any solutions. So here are my questions:

1. Should I get my LAN card changed?
2. If I should get my LAN card replaced, what model do I need that's compatible with my device?
3. And if the problem is not with the LAN card, then what is it and what's the solution?

Please help me out. I need this problem fixed immediately I appreciate your help

P.S: I've attached a photo of the processor's logo just in case. This is exactly the logo that's on my laptop.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i have recently gone from having 2mbps broadband to nearly 7mbps broadband but the web pages seem to take alot longer to load especially if they are new pages that i have not visited before. i was wondering what the reason for this could be?? i thought that if the internet connection was faster then webpages would load faster too. could it be something to do with IE7 although i had no problems with it when i had the slower connection. any help with this would be welcomed.

I installed Windows 7 on a new build about a month and a half ago. I downloaded many programs during the first week, but have not made many changes since. I started noticing the problem in the last week or two.
My browser speeds are getting increasingly slow. I use Firefox, but tried iExplorer once the problem started. The same issues exist one iE. It?s especially noticeable on various shopping sites that load a lot of small product pictures. The images will be extremely slow to load or the site my say loading for 10 minutes and never completely load. Opening gmail is getting slower or won?t load at all. Things that would load in a second now take minutes or fail to load completely at all.

This was happening off and on I think, but it is now a continuous problem. I have run speed test several times, but my connection speeds are consistently high. I haven?t had any connection issues with any online gaming. The issue seems to be restricted to internet browsers. I have another computer connected to the same network that loads the same pages extremely fast that this computer can?t load in minutes now.

I didn?t have any AV software or anti-spyware running when the problem began. I have tried some programs after the fact. AVG full scan came back clean. Malwarebytes full scan detected and removed one trojan in a bit torrent P2P download folder. Threat Fire hasn?t detected anything.

I appreciate any guidance.

A:Extremely slow browsers despite high connection speed

Something I forgot to note. I have noticed that when it is slowest, closing tabs in Firefox is not instant. I have also noticed that switching to private browsing on Firefox can eliminate at times, but the problem still exists other times.

Hi guys. I just signed up for this forum because I am having a problem with my internet connection. Im not that good with all of the computer terms so please bare with me lol.

I had been using a router (Belkin Wireless G Router) to share my internet connection for two computers. I dont have a wireless connection the router is just one that can be used to connect wireless. I had both computers/modems connected with this router.

Now I have taken one computer away and only have one computer, a RCA Model DCM245R modem, and my Belkin Router. Since I dont need the router anymore I unhooked it and have only my modem and computer. I cant get online now when back in the day I was able to with this connection with no problems. I keep getting a limited or no connectivity message. I try to repair the connection but I cant renew my IP Address for some reason.

So I had to rehook my router to get online to type this. I know with this modem and pc I should be able to get on without the router but i cant figure out why.

Im using Windows XP, my PC is a Dell Dimension 3000, my modem is a RCA modem Model # DCM245R, my internet connection is Cox High Speed Internet and my router is a Belkin Wireless G Router.

Can someone please help me figure out why I cant renew my IP Address and get online with the modem and PC?

Thanks,
Dan Conner

My computer runs very slow and I notice that on my computer properties it say I have 37.2BGB and 31.2used with 6.04free. My question is would this cause my computer to run slow. I don't know where the ram is going because I don't download. I just surf the web and play games online. I do have alot of $KB---$, KB--- files that I was told are log files. Can I safely delete this files now. I did a highjackthis on my computer and received help deleting programs and files that where not needed. But I was not sure if they said it was ok to safely delete this files as well. Because i do have alot of them. My computer is Toshiba Laptop Intel(R)Celeron(R)M 2002 Service pack 3 processor 1.60GHz, 504MB or RAM. I know I have asked alot but I am very frustrated not knowing what or how to fix this.

Is there a setting somewhere for IE where I can change the amount of time of inactivity so it stays connected?

About a year and a half ago I installed a gateway wireless broadband router to my fathers computer located in the downstairs living room. This computer has cable high speed internet. I also connected a gateway usb wireless adapter to my computer located upstairs. When I first installed it, I had high speed internet. You could barely tell it was wireless. But these past couple of months my internet has been very very slow. The connection cuts in and out and sometimes it wont connect at all. I have tried almost everything. I scanned and cleaned my computer with ad-aware, spyware doctor, registry mechanic, Hijack this, bullguard. I also scanned it with trojan hunter and nothing apeared except under file scan, it said Error: Directory not found:C:\Documents and settings\all users\ Start Menu\ Programs\ Gateway USB-G Wireless. After I read that I reinstalled the usb wireless adapter to my computer, but still no change with my connection. I also dowloaded winsock XP Fix but no change. I don't know what to do. I cant help but think im infected with a virus since the connection from the downstairs computer is so good. If someone can help me please post.

I would be thinking one of two things,
1-malicious code (spyware, adware, worm,etc)
2-wireless interference.

for problem 1, please DL and run HiJackThis, and post a log int he proper forums.
for problem 2, please read the following,
on another note, why dont you try to plug in your computer directly to the router to see if your connection speeds up a bit. here is the wireless interference bit.....

Going wireless is an exciting milestone. Whether you're in the process of setting up your network or you've already been working happily without wires, you're probably familiar with Public Enemy Number One in the wireless world: interference.
If you've experienced interference, you know how annoying it can be: now you have a signal; now you don't. It's like hide-and-seek.without the fun. But wait! What is it?
Think of a time when your favorite radio or television station wouldn't come in due to bad weather. When the storm passed, the signal became clear again. Similarly, because your wireless network relies on radio waves traveling through your home, your signal may waver for a variety of reasons. Greetings.
I have a Sony notebook I bought back in 2003 running XP SP2, which came with 500 MB of memory. I've used it all these years with my dial-up connection without any problems, and it's been updated at Microsoft Updates. Earlier this month I decided to try the wifi at my library, and bought a USB adapter for that purpose. It worked very well with the high speed connection for a half hour, and then it just turned off without warning. I turned it back on, connected again, and after that it turns off after 5 minutes as many times as I try (it still works great while it lasts). I did this several days, with the same result.
I exchanged the USB adapter for another one from a different company, with the same result.
I just upgraded the notebook to 1 GB of memory, and it still does the same.
I went to Sony Updates and downloaded their auto update software, and after 7 years all they offered for my computer was to get their media player reinstalled.
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

I have two computers. One is directly attached to my internet with an ethernet connection. I purchased a wireless card for my older computer and have had nothing but problems with the connection. There is a connection in the back for dial up as well as an unused USB port. The wireless card sends to a Netgear Wireless modem but continues to lose contact even though the computer is only 25 feet from the modem. I WOULD LIKE TO HARD WIRE THE MODEM TO THE COMPUTER BUT HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO DO THIS. The Netgear has a series of ethernet outputs but nothing else and my older computer has no ethernet port.

My older computer setup is as follows: Thanks for any help.

Earlier today I noticed as I turned on my notebook computer (Dell Inspirion 5150), that the fan was running on high speed. Occasionally, this occurs, but for some reason today, it wouldn't seem to slow down. I turned the computer off several times today, and each time I power it back up, the fan cuts on high. Also I've noticed that it's running a lil slower than normal. My computer usage was at 100%. Now, it has slowed down to 7-8%..somewhere around there, but the fan is still running on high. It may slow to medium speed, but quickly returns to high. I tried to restore my computer to see if that would help, but it wouldn't restore. Can anyone tell me what the problem may be?

In November of last year, my laptop suffered water damage and I needed my hard-drive replaced.

Since then, I have noticed worse performance when playing games, even online Flash ones, and generally much slower Internet, even with videos. One difference from before is the high memory usage; it's running at around 60% with only the browser open, which corresponds to 1.9 GB. When it gets in excess of 70%, things really lag.

Okay it's safe to say when it comes to things like this, im pretty much useless!

For the past 2 weeks now my internet has been running incredibly slow, never had a problem with it in the past. I have checked the firmware of the router (all up to date) reset it god knows how many times and its just not improving in the slightest.

I have also took my laptop to a friends house (make sure there wasn't a problem with that) and it was running completely fine! It's driving me insane, safe to say BT are no help at all.

My current router is: BT Home Hub 3 - Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.94.1.37 (Type A)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I should also add, we use several devices with the internet and it's running slow on all of them (iPad, Mobile, Xbox). I did think maybe we are using too much, but even when a single device is connected its as slow as ****. So yea!

HELP!

A week ago I got some virus or malware on my PC... And I can't fix it. I've run several scans, and things come up, but the computer is still slow. svchost is using up a lot of CPU I suspect. I know it's malware or a virus. There is always a process of iexplore when I don't have the net up, it comes back after I click end process too. I hope someone can help me... I am thinking about bringing it into BestBuy.

I've tried using the msconfig thing, and also have disabled automatic updates...

Nothing seems to work. (By the way, the sound devices are for recording music, so I hope they aren't causing the problem.)

I was directed by the moderator from this page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/535736/wallpaper-changing-on-its-own-possible-virus/ to get help on memory test.

It is likely that most malware are removed from running all the scans that was directed by the moderator, however, my computer still retains high memory usage even when no windows are open except for a chrome tab and the resource monitor.
I'm running on 4GB RAM.

Thank you and I appreciate your help.

A:High RAM Usage and slow running computer

Looking at your task manager you have several chrome instances. If I remember right Chrome opens a new instance for every tab. It also doesnt shut down cleanly when you exit. I bet if you close the 1 chrome tab that is open you still have several instances in task manager.

Reboot your PC and report your usage after a reboot without opening Chrome.

Hello guys, I bought a new laptop a few days back, but the internet has not been working as it should on it.

I can barely connect to the internet, and the signal is really weird. If I sit in my couch with my laptop the internet is barely working, though if I move about 10inches it will start to disconnect, reconnect, acting up, or not even work at all. Even if I move even further away I can still see my internet coming up on the list over available internetconnections.

I'm using an Atheros AR5B97 Wireless Network Adapter, and whenever I try to troubleshoot my internetconnection a message saying "Problem with wireless adapter or access point - Fixed"

After running a troubleshoot and getting this message the internet will reconnect and work properly as it should be for 10-20 seconds, before returning to act up.

I have tried to reinstall the driver (latest version, atleast windows says so, but couldn't find any newer version online so I guess I'll have to trust windows on this one (?)). Also been trying diff. settings on powersaving, etc, but with no results yet.

I've had several computers, much older ones, all able to connect to my internet with no problems at all, no matter where in the house I would be.

Help. :-(

Whats the make and model of laptop? With this information we can try and find the correct drivers for you. It's all ways best to get the latest drivers from the actual vendors and not through MS updates.

Also, there could be some sort of interference from other appliances and electrical wiring.

What type of router are you using? Have you tried changing the channel on the router?

Hi,

About 2 weeks ago I noticed my internet connection (DSL) was much slower than usual. My ISP (Verizon) assures me the problem is not on their end. The download speed is as expected (~1300 kbps), but the upload speed is just ~8 kbps and should be much higher than this. They suggested there might be a spyware problem.

System info: Dell Dimension 4600, 2.8 GHz Pentium4, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, Windows XP Pro (SP3), running Norton Internet Security, AdAware Free Anniversary edition, Spybot Search&Destroy.

HJT results below.

Questions:
1. Is the slow "internet connection" the result of the slow upload?
2. How can I fix the upload speed?
3. Do I have a malware problem?

Thanks.

version 11099 6a bit Pro
Firefox
Avast premium
Router Asus AC1900
Please note system specs are for another computer.

Firefox is running at it's normal speed but when I try to connect to ANY website it seems to take forever to connect.
My wife's laptop running the normal release of 10 has same problem.
Have tried everything i can think of but no success.
Any help would be appreciated,

Brian

A:Internet connection very slow, speed normal.

Possible ISP or router settings since both systems do it, ever try contacting your provider ? How about other browsers except Firefox ?

Recently, I reinstalled my Netgear wna3100 driver. Ever since then, I've been experiencing problems with high pings in games where I normally never had problems with. Pages load slowly even just the home page of Google.

I've attached my ipconfig picture. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A:High download speed and signal, high ping in games, slow page loads

To Disable Selective Suspend:

open the control panel
go to power options (you may have to set view to small icons)
click change plan settings
in the window that opens:
click change plan settings
click change advanced power settings, expand usb and ensure usb selective suspend is disabled.

I would also (while the device is plugged in)
go into the control panel - system - device manager - click the properties for it and make sure it's set to always on there as well.
I don't think the ipconfig can tell us much here since it's a data rate problem of some sort and not a actual connection problem from the sound of it.

The two things I mention above will hopefully keep your system from putting the device in 'low power mode' which may , or may not help your current problem.

I'm also curious if your system has recently slowed down in any other ways?

A:Slow internet speed with wired and wireless connection

Use this to test your internet speed and see if you are getting what you are paying for.

Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

What internet method are you using? (DSL, Cable ect.)

From your specs.
