ideapad yoga 11s does not see new hard drive when installing OS

Q: ideapad yoga 11s does not see new hard drive when installing OS

Have an 11S that I am upgrading the SSD from 125 to 5oo msata. Had 8.1 now installing 10. When setup asks where to install the OS it shows no drives. I may need to add a driver to the win 10 disk before I burn it. Have 2 chipset options at lenovo support. both are exe files. Where would I add them? OR If I put them on a USB drive can I add them that way using the tool to add drivers within the install? When I put them on a thumb drive, I can not access them from the list of options to load a driver.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I've had a few problems with my hard drive & it is being exchanged by the manufactuer. I have backed the hard drive using the back up facility in sytsem tools windows 2000. I have backed it up to another PC I have on a peer to peer network.
My question is this. After formating the new hard drive will I have to install the O/S or just restore the backed up file. I should mention that I did a "back up everything on my computer" back up & I'm unsure if that would back up the O/S as well.
Anyway do i just restore or load the O/S then restore.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Hello everyone.  This is my first post with a question.  I searched the forums and didn't see anything quite like it.

I have a Velocity Micro computer with a RAID hard drive (in case this matters) on which Windows 7 Professional is the OS.  I've forgotten the RAID number designation, but it's the one in which there is no data redundancy.  Both of the two physical disks (1 TB each) must be in place to form one usable drive, which has a 2 TB capacity. At least that's my understanding.  Again, this may not matter to my question, but I wanted to mention it because I'm concerned it could.

The computer also has 12 GB of RAM and a 6-core Intel processor, for what that information is worth.

A year or so ago (after using the computer for at least a year), software that had worked fine slowly began to fail, one by one.  I'm not sure of the order, but they include...

-Windows Update wouldn't download anything or even notify me of updates anymore
-WinTV stopped working; I could no longer record TV shows
-the Windows program that monitors whether I have security software running or need backups or updates vanished from my tray
-BOINC 6.10 kept giving me a message about zero status but no finished file, or something like that
-BOINC 7.0 wouldn't install
-Weather Watcher could no longer be double-clicked to open
-couldn't boot in one operation; I had to get to a point in the process (I've forgotten the details) and then shutdown and ... Read more

A:installing Windows 7 on a new hard drive; old hard drive is RAID

All your symptoms point towards malware in your old Wodniws OS.

There is no reason that you could not use your RAID array as your storage and boot off another drive, seems perfectly logical as there is no need for RAID with a Win OS as Winsxs.sys already exists within. Yes you change the boot order in the BIOS, set the cd drive first, then point the installation at the new disk which will default to C:\ No need to remove the RAID array, which will appear as additional storage. You may need to install drivers to get this to function correctly.

You could of course back up your data to another drive and re-install you rOS on your original disks...

Up to you.

I'm considering the Ideapad 510 15" (Part Number 80SR0055CF).  i5-6200U, 4GB onboard RAM, 1TB 5400RPM hard drive. http://shop.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/ideapad/500-series/510-15-inch/ Can I upgrade the RAM myself? I see some 510 models have 4GB onboard + a 4GB DIMM so I'm assuming that if I get the 4GB onboard they'll be an empty DIMM slot I could add RAM to, is that the case?  If so, what's the max memory I could add? What about the hard drive, can it be upgraded/replaced?  At some point I would probably want to put in an SSD. If someone could link to the hardware maintenance manual that would be really useful, then I could check these things myself.  I can't find the manual for this particular laptop.  Thank you! Mod's Edit: System model added to the front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity.I edited the mod's edit because they tagged it as "510-15ISK" which I'm pretty sure is a Yoga, I'm looking at the Ideapad not the Yoga. I added a link to the product page for further clarity. Lenovo's product naming is confusing so I'm not sure.

I have tried contacting lenovo directly by web chat, email and phone and they all tell me to go to the other one, rather frustrating. any help would be great everyone

So I was playing with my laptop when suddenly the game froze. I tried to Alt + Tab but then the whole desktop froze. I also noticed that my laptop was very warm. Without anything happening, I decided to manually shut it down with the power button.  But when I opened it, the screen was stuck at the Lenovo logo but the loading wasn't appearing. After that, a boot menu opened but it just kept saying "Media not found". I did some research and used BIOS and it showed that it couldn't detect my hard drive. I've done everything from restarting to system recovery but nothing worked. Given that my defender was updated and I have not downloaded any suspicious file yet, could this be a hardware problem?  Here are some photos showing my problem

Hi, I wanted to totally start over with my Ideapad. It has a Hitachi SATA of some type. It caused windows to crash (why didn't I see that coming? ) I can boot to the USB but would like a recommendation on this: Want to first format the drive, then zero insert for full erase effect.  How is this done? Load some temp OS on the USB and then how to get to the hard drive and reformat it? Thanks.CF

A:How to reformat the hard drive on my Ideapad P500

Hi cottagefarmer ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Take note that loading the harddrive with a different OS (windows) would require you to have another product key to activate. Clearing the harddrive and its partition would also remove the factory reset image that came with the machine.

Best to plan out how you would proceed and what are the software you need including backup plan just in case.

Here are reference that you can review :

A:Ideapad y580 hard drive replacement

Hi vector74 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Once you have the indication of a failing harddrive, ensure that you have backed up all files needed and that you have the product keys of your software as you would need to re activate it. Check if you can still create your recovery image .
Check your Mircosoft account for activated status and entitlement of the digital license for guarantee.

Factory image is on the original drive but since Windows 8 and Windows 10 image is easier to download with the needed drivers in the support site, then you don't need to worry since activation would be automatic as an OEM systemboard keeps it coded inside.

Hope this help answer your query.
Update us how it goes best for you.

It seems to happen to the system or Avast Anti-virus or somethimes google chrome but it only eer seems to go to 4.5mb/s which as far as im aware it shouldnt be doing just running windows. At other times it can be at 5.0mb/s whilst running a different application but only at 30% or so. I have disabled link power manageent in the intel rapid storage software as suggested by lenovo support. I thought i't could just be a poor hard drive that they use on this model of laptop but I don't know for sure. Attached is a screenshop of the problem im trying to explain. If anyone has suggestions that could hep me I would really appreciate it. - Gecko

I have problem with my Ideapad U510. Taken to a shop. It could be a fan problem or could be a hard drive problem or both. My U510 has 24GB SSD + 1 TB HD (I think it is WD). The OS was Win8 which I upgraded to Win8.1 within days I received the laptop.Have 2 questions:Q1/  Can the hard drive swap out and replaced by a new drive? In other word, will the existence of the 24GB SSD posed a problem in this swapping?Q2/ The HD is 1TB. Googling the spec for U510, there is an old pdf from Lenovo saying this laptop support 500GB, 750GB to 1TB HD. If the original drive is the source of problem and I have to replace it, does anyone know whether I can replace the original 1TB drive with a 2TB drive?  Also, the original HD spins at 5400rpm, can U510 accepts HD with spinning speed of 7200rpm? Thanks in advance.Sorcerer

Hi. I'm always a little nervous about jumping into a forum--hope everyone here's patient with dumb newbies, 'cause I are one.

Anyhow, here's the problem: Toshiba laptop got infected with Vundo virus, tried many anti-virus & vundo specific tools, & the virus would always reappear (it seemed to actually keep some like spybot search & destroy from running at all). Got disgusted, tried to reinstall OS from recovery discs, install would never complete. Reformatted and repartitioned, then got error message saying hard disc was about to fail whenever I booted. Ran some disc recovery utilities, no go.

So I bought a new hard disc, installed it just now, and tried to boot from recovery disc to as to install XP on it. The computer starts, I get the COMPAQ screen where it tells me to press ESC to change boot order. I tell it to boot from the CD drive, it goes through the bios check and the CD drive runs, then everything just stops & I have a blank screen. When I put the old HD back in, I can boot from the recovery disc just fine, though it still says the hard drive is about to fail and I can't get to windows, but I can get to setup just fine. Is there something about the new HD that could keep the machine from booting from the recovery disc? Or am I just missing some obvious step I should have taken (I really have googled the heck out of this, so I don't think so).

JB

Thanks,
JB

A:Problem installing XP on new hard laptop hard drive

and welcome to the Forum

The recovery partition is on the original drive, which means you have to install XP the old fashioned way:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/cont...icles/158.html

This assumes you have an XP Installation cd . . if not, you can request a replacement from Toshiba or borrow an OEM version from someone.

Was this a typo?

Good day and welcome to the community.

Looking at the hardware manual: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_100s_11_iby_hmm_201509.pdf there is no place to install any kind of SSD. The 32GB of eMMC (embedded MultiMedia Card) storage is soldered to the system board. There appear to also be 64GB variants of the system board, so that's the maximum.

Hope this helps to clarify.

My hard drive failed last Saturday, reading "operating system not found." BIOS testing resulted in error 10009, replace hard drive. At this point, the drive won't boot, but data can still be read.

I have a new hard drive. The backup disk I made for Vista isn't working.

I thought of borrowing one from a friend, but my OEM key on the bottom has completely worn off. HP says they cannot help and Microsoft wants me to pay for a replacement key. I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Is there any way to use the recovery partition on the old drive to install Vista on the new drive?

My laptop has two hard drive bays, but I only have one caddy, so ideally I'd like to connect it using an enclosure.

Also, I do have access to another computer that I could use as a "go-between" if needed. For example, if it's possible to simply copy and paste the recovery partition files, I could use the enclosure to copy them from the old drive to the working computer, then put the new drive in the enclosure and copy the files onto that.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.
