Yet another internet connectivity issue

Q: Yet another internet connectivity issue

Alright, I bought an Acer notebook today that came pre-installed with Vista. I have a cable internet connection and it connected when I plugged it in, but the connection isn't stable at all. It cuts in and out regularly. I saw the threads on the problems with McAfee, but I have Norton. I uninstalled that. I don't even know where to start now.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone, I'm having an odd issue with my 5 year old Sony Viao. I have my router connected to a Cable modem and the Sony computer is connected directly to the router via network cable. Sometimes I lose all connectivity on my Sony, but at the same time my laptop continues to work just fine in the house so I know its not the internet connection directly. I try powering down everything (including the computer, cable modem and router) and then sometimes I get good connectivity back for about 1/2 hour. Then what usually happens is after about 1/2 hour I start to lose connectivity on the Sony but only to web sites that I have not visited in the past half hour. So if I use google and CNN.com I can continue to use those sites, but when I try going to other sites that I didn't use during the 1/2 hour of good connectivity I get the standard "This page cannot be displayed message". Has anyone seen anything like this before, its really very confusing.

Thanks for everyone's help in advance.

Hi, I think my internet connection is continually being interrupted by my next door neighbors. We live in a condominium and there is only a thin wall between us. Perhaps they are running an xbox or cell phone. I have a Netgear N150 USB wireless adapter. What can I do to keep my internet connection from constantly being broken?

Also, my Microsoft Essentials Antivirus won't update any more. Thanks.

A:Internet Connectivity Issue

Probably best to re-install MSE, as for your neighbour possibly interfering with your connection, it may just be a channel change in your router is all that's needed.

Download/Run this prog Download inSSIDer and Discover the Wi-Fi Networks Around You | MetaGeek and it will show the channels that are being used by yourself and those around you. Ideally setting your channel to 3 away from the nearest is best (because of overlap) but that isn't always possible depending on the congestion.

Do what you can with this and you are looking for a channel that will give you a RSSI of around -50dB. It's when you are close to or using the same channel as someone else and the RSSIs converge that causes this type of problem.

the 192.168.2.1 is the main router from bell and the 192.168.0.1 is a second router by linksys.
i need to be able to use nic one settings and still be able to connect to the internet. currently we have to enable first one to get on the Point of sale server but when we do that we have no internet on that connection. and when we enable the second connection then we dont have access to the point of sale system.

sytems are still running xp

On the NIC that connects to the server set a static IP address without entering an IP for the default gateway, then all internet traffic will go through the other connection.

This is a bit of a unique problem and I have never encountered an issue like this before. So, two days ago I was using the internet in my apartment without any issue. Then, yesterday both my roommate and I encountered this. Our devices would be connected to our Xfinity internet connection, full bars shown on both my laptop and my phone. However, when trying to access certain sites the internet would not work, we could not connect. The site would either endlessly load or give us an error message stating a problem with the network. The weird part is some websites load fine with no issues, Youtube being a notable example. However others such as https://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and my university website would not work. I do not think this is a computer side issue considering my roommate also could not access the educational website Blackboard and could access Youtube and do Google searches. So, yesterday after resetting the router by unplugging and waiting then plugging back in the power, that seemed to fix the issue. I thought that would be the end of it, but today the issue returned... Read more

I am currently having a very frustrating internet connectivity issue with my windows install. I cannot access anything on the internet, through any means, ports, or programs possible on my windows install. I can see all my lan stuff perfectly but cannot access anything outside of that.

I have multiple computers hooked up going through this one connection onto the internet without issue, so the problem is specific to this computer only. Well actually to this (Windows) operating system on this computer only. I can access everything fine on my Ubuntu install on the same computer, yet when i try and access anything on my windows it does not work.

I have tried rebooting my router, my cable modem, my computer and it still doesn't work. Anybody have a solution to this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Okay... so, I've had this cheap laptop for a year and a half. It's actually been great so far, and I've never had any issues with it.

Unfortunately, I am now posting from my desktop, in the hopes that one of you fantastic tech support gurus can help me.

Can you connect using an Ethernet Cable? If so, download an updated driver for your wireless adapter from your computer manufacturers support/download drivers web site.
You can also try this. go to Start/Run and type CMD and press Enter. In the command prompt type ipconfig /release and press enter. You IP address will change to 0.0.0.0 now type ipconfig /flushdns and press enter. Now type ipconfig /renew and press enter. You should get a new IP address (ex) 192.168.0.173. Try connecting now

Connected to a network domain (able to browse network folders/files/other machines) Both wireless & wired.

Issue:

Cannot connect to any websites using Internet Explorer. Pages come up 'unable to load' ... Google search works up until the search results display...clicking on a result doesn't produce anything. Also able to get to Yahoo but clicking on any links also produces nothing. All other URLs 'unable to load and show up with a %20 before the url (ie. %20msn.com) Both wireless & wired.

Tried Firefox & Google Chrome with same results.

All browsers function properly in SafeMode.

Ran multiple scans (MalwareBytes, Spybot S&D, Super Antispyware, CCleaner, Glary Registry Cleaner etc). Returned very little results and cleaned. Repeated until 0 results displayed. Rebooted with same negative results connecting to internet.

Machine is picking up a network IP address and able to connect to network. Also, the network icon in the taskbar will sometimes have an exclamation mark
and sometimes not, with same results either way.

Configured msconfig for selective startup with only MS services enabled. Rebooted and seems to work fine. However on numerous reboots the exclamation mark seems to come and go whenever it pleases. Mostly it remains present. But still connects to internet.

Hi. I've been having an issue with my internet for several weeks now that I'm hoping you can help me solve. It will say I am connected, yet I am only able to load a few websites, Google, Facebook, Wikipedia, Youtube etc. Upon checking the status on my connection I noticed that the IPv4 Connectivity reads 'No Internet Access'.

The strange thing is it seem to come and go at random. It will stay for days on end, then be fine for several days, then come back. It's done this about three times now. I've tried several things, but nothing seems to make any difference either way. I've tried resetting the router, replacing the cables, network diagnostics, system restore, changing the proxy settings, the IP settings, the preferred DNS server. I've tried updating and reinstalling the drivers. I've tried several command prompt executions i.e. ipconfig, winsock, chkdsk. Even when I'm in SafeMode, the issue still persists.

The only thing that seemed to make a difference is when I finally tried refreshing my computer. After that, the Ethernet worked perfectly, although the wifi was still out. But as soon as I downloaded and installed the first few windows updates, now the internet does not work at all. Now it says it is limited and the IPv4 and IPv6 both say 'No Internet Access'.

I am rather frustrated at this point, as I still have no idea where the issue is coming from. The only thing I can think of now is that it may be an issue with the modem itself, perhaps it needs... Read more

Definitely start with the ISP replacing their modem.

Also try connecting a Ethernet cable to the laptop when this problem occurs, see if that works or not.
Another possibility is to replace the built-in wireless card. They are easy to replace and not expensive.
One last possibility is to use a USB wireless dongle instead of the built-in wireless.

Hello you wonderful people! Let me just cut right to it, my internet connectivity on my laptop has been a bit wonky to say the least. Every time I try to open up Google Chrome, Firefox, Skype or even Internet Explorer, it insta-crashes and asks if I want to re-launch. If I do that, it just keeps insta-crashing in a vicious, seemingly never-ending cycle. But what's weird is that internet-reliant games such as Hearthstone, Smite and Steam games all work just fine. Chrome, Firefox, Skype and IE were working perfectly fine yesterday, they just seized up when I came back to my mom's house (where they worked just fine every week before this one). There were no changes to the firewall, and the internet has no lag on any of the games, which normally there is some, so it's weird. Nothing changes when I run the computer in Safe Mode. I've shut down and restarted my computer, i've run all the related options in the f8 menu at start-up, and I don't believe there is a virus, as I didn't use the computer all too much before and everything else works fine. I would tell you the specs, but I don't know them off the top of my head and I had to use one of the computers here to be able to get this question out. Best I remember is Windows 7 and 32-bit. Any ideas how to fix this?

Hello,

I have a desktop computer that is connected to a modem that has a wireless signal. For the first few months everything worked ok, however I started having trouble losing Internet on one laptop. I had a yellow exclamation mark on the internet connection icon. Sometimes, instead of a yellow exclamation it is a red X. In device manager everything is fine, but I uninstalled and reinstalled the network card regardless. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

A few months later, the same started happening with the second laptop (exact same make and model as the other - Acer Aspire 5333-2969.

I often lose connectivity with my Samsung Galaxy Tab, however my iPhone and iPods and the desktop all work ok.

Ok I've got a weird problem, its just popped up recently.

I just got over a week long session of constant crashes thanks to some faulty RAM i managed to buy.

Now whenever I boot into Windows my broadband is . . . unavailable . . . that's the best way I can describe this. In my Vista Sidebar I've got Network Meter running and when I first boot into Windows for at least the first 10 minutes i barely get over 3kbps going into Firefox DNS works fine it finds the website, but just sits there waiting, after that 10 minute period i have full access to my connection and the site will load, and everything is back to normal.

Its not a virus, or spy ware I have NOD32 running & up to date. Nothing new has been added to the system that would cause this . . . to my knowledge. I have no idea why this is happening or what could be causing this, aside from the 800 BSOD's that I've had within the last week.

Umm . . . any suggestions would be great

Okay, I have had my PC with Windows 7 installed for several months with absolutely no issues. Recently, with no changes to any hardware other than adding some Firewire peripherals I have started experiencing a random loss of internet connectivity.

The strange part is that the Network Status page shows that I am connected to my wireless router, and the internet. But upon opening IE or Messenger you immediately get a page cannot be displayed error or connectivity error in the case of Messenger. I also cannot even connect to my router gui over HTTP. But I can ping my router. Now, here's the really, really strange part. I am sure that I still have physical internet connectivity to my PC, because I have a virtual machine installed (Virtualbox) using the host adapter and it can reach the internet. I'm stumped! It almost seems like something is blocking the default HTTP port or something, but I cannot figure it out. I really don't want to re-install Windows, but I fear I may have no choice.

Oh, after rebooting my PC, my internet connectivity returns for a period of time...sometimes several hours. But eventually it gets lost again. I usually notice the problem every morning, but it happens during the day while I am away as well.

I have a hard wired Dell Studio with Windows Vista. The connection is directly from the cable to the cable modem to the computer so there is no router. I have an issue with keeping a constant connection. It will connect for a minute, not connect the next. It never keeps an ongoing constant connection. The internet works perfectly fine in safe mode with networking which leads me to believe it is a software issue. I have uninstalled the antivirus, turned off the firewall, uninstalled all programs installed after I bought the computer, and still no luck. I have went through many troubleshooting to no avail. I also have used a different computer, modem, ISP, ethernet cord as well. All other computers work fine except this one which also leads me to believe its the computer not the cable provider. This is really difficult to use a webcam over the internet as it closes out all the time due to lack of connection. Any ideas/help is greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

Although I have read through many posts and tried most of the solutions posted, nothing has worked. Apologies for it being somewhat verbose, just trying to eliminate as many possibilities as I could.

I was installing XP SP3 on my Win XP Pro PC. However during the install process it crashed. So it never started again, no matter where I rolled it back to. Eventually at some point it would not even startup XP anymore which I thought was rather final , so I re-installed XP Pro from scratch

So I have tried the following steps (listed in no particular order) in an attempt to get my Internet to work but no luck:

1a. netsh winsock reset catalog
1b. netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt then rebooted the PC -
2. netdiag /test:winsock /v
which gave the following message:
(232)[FATAL] Cannot find TCP/IP configuration from registry
and as yet cannot resolve this, however turning on the POST test for the LAN revealed it Failed.
The cable is OK as I plug it into my laptop and works fine, so physically it is OK.
3. ipconfig /all - shows absolutely nothing at all, no errors mesages, bizarre .
4. Tried DISABLING/ENABLING under Network Connections - NO CHANGE
5. Checking the STATUS of the Network Connection = CONNECTED even when no cable is plugged in, 0 Packets Sent/Received
6. Performing a REPAIR in Network Connections FAILS
7. Checking SYS INFO (msinfo32) > Component > Network Adapter shows a 1394 Net Adapter with no problems, no yellow question marks.

I'm having a problem right now with my internet connection on my other machine.

I brought it home for the holiday break and it won't give me a regular internet connection. This machine is on the same LAN/connection and works fine.

I can do some things on my other machine though:

Resolve DNS servers.
Ping SOME addresses through DNS
Go to Yahoo.com

I can NOT however seem to download any data from any site other than yahoo. I can ping more than just yahoo (google works for instance), but it won't download the page if I go to google in IE.

I can connect to any web page, and I know this because it will redirect from domain name to specific server side scripting in the address bar (ASP/cgi whatever for specific site).

Also, this is not a simle browser hijack, because no other programs (games/mail) will download data either (they will connect to the server then sit there).

I'm a bit confused as to why this is happening...

So here is my issue- this just crept up in the last few days. I've made no changes that I can remember to my system recently, other than updating java and acrobat to the latest versions this evening, thinking they might somehow be the culprit of the following problem.

My main browser is firefox. It is updated to the most recent version. Randomly, while surfing the net, I will lose internet connectivity. firefox crashes and tries to resolve the problem, but doesn't. I have to manually close the firefox browser. Immediately after, I try accessing the internet via IE or chrome, and neither can get a webpage. I try to troubleshoot my connection, and it returns "DNS server is not responding". After a minute or two after closing all browsers, I'm able to get the internet again. This appears to be completely random and just started yesterday. I would say yesterday it happened about 3 times in 5-6 hours of using the net. It has happened to me this evening 2 times in about 2 hours of internet surfing.

I have mcafee and have done a recent scan- nothing turned up as malicious. I also use Malwarebytes (free version) and have run several recent scans. It found a non maleware issue that it removed, but this issue with internet acess keeps happening.

I am not sure if this is the right forum for this but was looking for any thoughts or help as to what this might be related to.

Just reformatted about 2 days ago and my computer has contracted a strange problem regarding internet connectivity...

From a fresh reboot my computer is fine, I can browse the web on firefox etc...use MSN, connect to teamspeak. When I load up a game (any game apparently) I can connect to only servers and play normally. When I close the game and load firefox, ie, msn there is no connectivity to the internet and I just get the standard "no internet" error. Teamspeak works fine though.

Some details:

Running zone alarm firewall, virus checker, spam filter etcetc...However I can't see that being the issue, I had that before I reformatted.
Im connected to the internet wirelessly via a D-Link Router.
My wireless card: Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

I've tried right clicking on the connected and selecting repair and when it (finally) connected it has the yellow '!' and says there are connectivity issues. I have to reboot to fix the problem.

If anyone has an idea on what is going on and has a solution or any suggestions i'd be very grateful!

Many thanks,

Matt.

My wife's HP ENVY m6-1125dx PC using Windows 8 with Ralink RT5390R 802.11 bgn wifi adapter would lose wifi connection with the VERIZON FIOS Actiontec MI424WR router after 13-14 minutes; plugging the ethernet cable in would regain internet access, or restarting the PC but the issue would return in 13-14 minutes. My Toshiba laptop, using Windows 7, stayed connected when my wife's laptop lost its wifi connection. The other devices in our house (Wii, TIVO, printer, etc.) had no connection issues. Interestingly, my wife's laptop had no wifi connection losses with other hotspots (Best Buy aka Geek Squad, McDonalds, Starbucks, Panera, etc); so this issue was specifically between the Ralink wifi adapter and the Actiontec router wifi.

Just updating the laptop wifi adapter driver did not fix the issue. HOWEVER, uninstalling the driver then reinstalling the latest wifi adapter driver from the HP website seems to have fixed the issue. Also installed the Intel Wireless Drivers for Microsoft Window 8 from the HP website.

For the past few weeks I have had a series of random internet troubles all with the same symptoms. These symptoms have persisted through a reformat and also a new NIC card. Here are the specifics:

I boot up into my account on windows xp, having the ethernet cable plugged into my Linksys network card the whole time (It's in a PCI slot if that will help.) It shows full connectivity and my internet IP address, subnet, DNS, etc. when I do ipconfig. It does not give me an ip address of 192.168.1.1xx but an actual IP address from the dreaded road runner ISP. Note, the router/cable is not the issue as I have been able to plug in my mother's laptop right to the cable and it worked without a hitch. Though all information appears perfect in the ipconfig menu, the computer still will not load any websites in IE/Firefox, ping any ips/websites, or allow me to access the internet in any form.

I do not always have this issue. Most of the time my internet/network works fine without an issue, this seems to be sparatic.

Another thing that happens sometimes during this issue is I will perform the "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" commands to attempt to clear any issue with the current IP (even though it may appear as it should) then it may re-assign me to a 192.168.1.1xx address. Now when I am on one of the 192.168.1.1xx addresses I can access my router page/setup at 192.168.1.1 but when I'm on of the other working internet IPs that my computer gets... Read more

Up until about a month ago this was not happening and he was able to logon. I don't know what changed that is now blocking him from the internet. We have a Linksys router that allows me to access the internet on my laptop and that seems to be working fine. Any help out there???

I've been having internet connectivity problems for months now.

I'm using a Webstar cable modem on an HP Media Center PC m/7060n.

I have Windows XP with Zone Alarm as my firewall.

I use Firefox as my browser.

I live in an apartment building.

Okay, with that out of the way.......

My internet connectivity has been haphazard, at best: sometimes I get lucky after turning on the computer and being able to connect right away (such as right now).

HOWEVER, this is the exception, rather than the rule. Very often, it would take many minutes for pages to load, if they load at all.

I've tried everything that SHOULD be tried: I've unplugged the modem from the computer for about 20-30 seconds...I've unplugged the modem from the power source for 20-30 seconds...I've restarted by browser...I've rebooted my machine. SOMETIMES it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I had a technician from my ISP (Rogers Cable) come up to take a look. He says there's nothing wrong with the modem, so it must be with my PC.

I don't want to go through the hassle of calling HP Tech Help because I'm past my warranty and they refuse to help me.

How can I troubleshoot the problem with my PC?

Thanks.

Hi,

I have a computer called a "Titan Krypt" AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.00GHz Quad Core DDR3 System bought from Overclockers just over a year ago. I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium which I just reinstalled so its the only thing on the machine. I was using a wireless dongle by CISCO LINKSYS (WUSB100 ver.2) and everything was fine. Then I moved house, although I could see the wireless network I could never really connect and if I could only for a short while and really slow. I have since moved house twice more and been through several ISP and routers. The CPU seems to connect to the internet intermittently as in for 10 secs every minute or two. Several other computers in the house I have lived in can connect with no problems. I have tried to update drivers and install AVG (payed version). None of this helped so I bought a new wireless dongle by NETGEAR (WNDA3100) and for a short time everything worked perfectly. Then the old problems started to occur. I used to get error messages from diagnostics about DNS issues. Now I only get either/both network cable is damaged or unplugged and cannot find default gateway. Sometimes it just comes up with cannot connect. My speed varies from nothing up to about 20 mbps. I have good signal strength. I have taken the sides off the CPU and checked all wires are secured properly. There does not appear to be any physical damage (although I do not know precisely where to look). If anyone could give me some advice on how to fix thi... Read more

Hello guys,

I am having some issues with my internet lately.

I am using an "ARRIS SURFboard SBG6580 Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem and Wi-Fi N600 Router". My laptop is a Dell Studio 1558 and running Windows 7.

Issue : While being connected to the internet network via wifi, I get "no internet access" after browsing the internet for 20-30 minutes. I get the "wifi yellow caution" icon. Thereafter I disconnect from my network and then reconnect to the same network. Instantly I get wifi access when I reconnect.

This keeps on happening at first every 10-15 minutes, after a while it happens every 2-3 minutes.

I also connected to this internet Wifi network with my HP Elitebook laptop running Windows 7. I get "no internet access" as well on this laptop after initial 20 minute use. Then I have to disconnect and reconnect the network. Wifi starts working instantly.

Interestingly, the Dell and HP never simultaneously go on "no internet access".

On my cell phone running android, I very rarely see any drop in wifi while connected to this network.

To test if my Laptop wireless card was functioning properly, I connected it to my cell phone hotspot (different network) for 3 hours. Absolutely no drop in connectivity.

My suspicion is that there is something going on with my Modem/Router settings. Can someone please help me with this ?

2) Clearing DNS cache by flushDNS command

I apologize if this has already been posted, but I couldn't find it. It's an odd issue so I wasn't entirely sure how to search.

Here's the problem - there are a lot of "new" factors here. I recently got a new laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad with Windows 7) and I'm still in the process of setting it up.

Now just today, we changed internet service providers. We have digital cable and I'm connecting via wireless. This is what we had before, but with a different provider, different cable modem and different (brand new Apple) wireless router. When it runs, it runs fast. However, between every 30 seconds and every five minutes (approximately), the internet stops working. It still says "connected" but when I run diagnostics, it says it cannot connect to the internet. Then, through the Lenovo Access Connections tool, I disconnect from the network and then connect again and it works fine....for another 30 seconds to five minutes....

I checked the firewall and everything looked right (all the relevant programs were permitted, etc.) and I tried different browsers, so it's not a browser issue. Here's what the diagnostic tool says:

Adapter Details

Adapter name 11b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter II

Good evening from Aus.

I'm having some very serious problems with Windows 7 at the moment. I've been running it since about 30th November last year, and it has run flawlessly... until about 3 weeks ago.

To sum up the issue before i start getting into its history, on startup (every one now, without exception) I get the blue "busy" circle around my network icon in the toolbar. It stays like this for 15+ minutes, and will randomly either accept the network and internet connection, or stay on permenantly. The real issue (apart from not being able to access the internet/network) is that while doing this, i cannot access the network and sharing center, or any service to do with internet or networking.

When i try, i get the blue circle of doom next to my cursor for 5-10 seconds, like it is preparing to open whatever i tried, and... nothing. No window opens, nothing is running as far as i can tell from the task manager. It tries to open and just doesn't. It's a little different with the network and control center, as the window opens, but it is just blank-white.

A short list of things that this happens with include:

-Windows firewall
-Windows defender
-Network and control center
-internet options
-internet explorer
-steam
-windows live
-right click > troubleshoot problems on network icon in toolbar
-system restore (works 50% of the time)

Troubleshoot steps i have tried:

-Various network cables
-A different hub and plugging the cable directly into my comp

Last night I came home to find that I had no Internet connection. Not uncommon seeing as we have a terrible router-modem combo from Time Warner. Usually I just reset the modem and it's back. Not this time. I tried that a few times and also reset my separate wireless router to no avail. My setup is as follows:

- Windows XP 32-Bit on the main computer
- Time Warner Wireless Router/Modem
- Linksys Wireless Router on top of that with DD-WRT so I can get a decent wireless signal

I've had intermittent connectivity problems and terrible lag spikes for months, so I'm used to that, but now it seems to be dead in the water. Here's a small list of things I did to try to narrow down the problem.

- Tried multiple computers/devices to be sure it wasn't the computer itself. None worked.
- Reset the Time Warner modem and the Linksys router multiple times.
- Connected directly to the Time Warner modem to be sure the Linksys was not the problem.
- Tried pinging some websites with the following results:
* From the computer, I can ping and connect to the router setup page.
* From the computer, I can't ping any outside websites.
* From the router's built in Ping tool, I CAN ping outside websites.

After trying these things multiple times and calling Time Warner - who haplessly suggested I restart the modem again - they decided to try to reboot the router remotely. This was a bad idea, apparently. Once they did it, I lost the ability to even connect to the rou... Read more

Does anyone have information on when a security update will be available for the issue?
On 10/18/17 MS Article Stated: "Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release of the security patch. This is expected to be available in another 2-3 weeks or earlier."

For Issue:
JET provider is no longer able to connect after the October update. This update (released October 10th, 2017) includes a security update release that inadvertently affects the JET provider. The update was kb4041678 and included in
the patch kb4041681.  These patches affected the Operating System, which adversely has an issue with the following technologies: Microsoft Windows Search Component, Windows kernel-mode drivers, Microsoft Graphics Component, Internet Explorer, Windows
kernel, Windows Wireless Networking, Microsoft JET Database Engine, and the Windows SMB Server. It is important to note that the changes were not to these technologies themselves.

A:Virus analysis and removal. Random virus pop-ups and internet connectivity issue

Thank you for deleting the extra copy of this post. Once I hit post, my internet connection was lost and it must have double posted when I reconnected. Also, it may be worth noting that normally when I run antivirus software, there is generally a little bit of malware or spyware that is found, but recently when I run a multitude of different scan programs absolutely nothing shows up. Either my computer is squeaky clean after nearly 6 months without scans, or something is blocking/hiding from the scanners. It seems to be the latter, as I have mentioned that I am having issues with my laptop shutting down intermittently, virus warning popups, and internet connectivity issues stemming from something altering my connection preferences.

Opps, maybe not so unique since I just noticed an ENTIRE forum for browsers...perhaps moving this is appropriate...if so, please do. I will be reading up in there.

Its interesting because I can't find any mention of it anywhere on this site. Specifically browser connectivity is lost after a little while (guessing 7 minutes, though it may be a number of browser pages displayed trigger i went 3 hrs today) after I start browsing. If I don't start a browser, the death clock doesn't begin until I start browsing. Now, at the same time, all shares, the other machines on the network, work fine. Also if I am playing an online game, I will not have any issues. Just IE and firefox can't display pages and other programs (like updates of AVG) are soon to follow.

***Important to note this is new, the network was fine for over a week before this started a couple days ago.

I notice, when it works, net info states Homegroup - ready to connect (I am using a workgroup to connect to other machines) but last night, during a browser outage it said it was connected. I notice now it calls my workgroup a homegroup (I think is used to say workgroup)

(This problem may have started around when I tried to synchronise a folder to "always available offline", but there are other things that were done in that period of time unfortuately, all have since been undone.

I've recently (in the past few weeks) been having trouble with Internet Explorer, version 7.0.5730.11. When I first open the program, the page is blank, and the status bar (bottom of the IE window) briefly flashes "Detecting proxy settings" and then sits at "Connecting to site 74.125.93.104" for several minutes before displaying the typical "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" screen.

In dealing with the problem, I've found that whenever I get the "Connecting to site" message in the status bar, I immediately close IE, then reopen it. Sometimes the first time I do this results in Google (homepage) loading, but most of the time I must repeat this proces several times (up to about 10) before IE loads Google.

When already working properly, I've noticed that IE has no problems opening links in new windows or tabs. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing this problem?

Relevant Information:

Windows XP Service Pack 3
IE version 7.0.5730.11

Please let me know if additional information is required, and I will do my best to provide it. Thanks for reading.

Hey all,

I'm finally posting here after having read around on the site before and gotten good info.

I set up a wireless home network between two computers (a laptop and a tablet) a few months ago. The laptop is the "base" computer and the table has a wireless receiver; the router is a DLink 524.

I never had any connectivity issues (internet) until last week on the laptop when my free version of Zonealarm started acting screwy and not displaying any info when I would open the program up. I updated the version, and since then cannot use the internet while Zonealarm is running. I'm confused, though, because the tablet has Zonealarm and has no problems accessing the internet at all. DLink tech support tells me that the problem is in the configuration of Zonealarm, and that I should contact them, but I'm running the freebie version and so don't anticipate getting much help there.

Is this an issue of ports (opening/forwarding)? If so, I have no experience in that and would appreciate if someone could take a second to let me know what they think should be done. I'm willing to just scrap Zonealarm and try something that works better with the router if need be, but I'm willing to bet someone who knows what they're doing could fix this easily, and that the problem is with me.

Thanks so much,

Jason

A:Odd connectivity issue

Go into the router and turn off the blocking of computers not running ZA. I'm not sure if this is the problem but I do know that I've seen such as problem in DLink routers before because some models now have a feature(some added with firmware update) which will allow you to configure the router with ZA so they don't interfere with eachother, it aslo has a feature which will let you block computers not running ZA so that you don't have unprotected machines on the network. While this is a good idea in theory, it also causes problems for people who don't know it is there.

BTW, the setup you mention where one laptop is "base" as you call it, is incorrect. When using a router to share your internet, the router itself is the server and all computers are the clients. This misconception causes a lot of confusion and sometimes makes it difficult to diagnose a problem when you call one machine a "base" or "server" when it is not.

Did you test the cable with a cable tester? Sounds like a cable issue or perhaps a bad switch. Did you take the switch close to the other switch and connect it with a short patch cable as a test?

Hi,
I have just bought a new router and am trying to connect it. I did the basic set up with an install disc to the problem is that when I connect to the Wireless network it only gives me limited access to the internet for instance I am able to use Skype and other applications that rely on internet connection, but when it comes to web browsers (both Mozilla & Safari) it shows the url section loading but only ever makes it mid way (the page always stays blank) . I also have access to the router settings using 192.168.2.1 I cloned my MAC address on the router settings as that was prior advice.

If anyone could help it would be amazing..

router settings also say that its connected

Hi,
I am currently trouble shooting a network problem for a medium size company, aprox 250 users. The issue is as follows:
A connectivity problem occurs on random clients which leaves them with an ip address received from DHCP server but the client only has connectivity with its own vlan. (DHCP server on different VLAN) The switch has ip helper set up so the communication to get an ip address is being done via the switch and on to the DHCP server.(The primary function of IP helper) The client can't ping anything outside its own VLAN.
Our only work around is to assign a static DHCP ip address on the DHCP server using the MAC address of the client. Issue an ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew on the affected client to get the assigned static DHCP address and full connectivity is restored.
There is a mix of Cisco and 3com switches, mostly Cisco with a Cisco 3750 multi layer switch at the heart of the network.
I have analysed the configuration of the devices and everything looks good.
I know its hard to diagnose from this brief description but any similar problems experienced and solutions discovered are appreciated.
Thanks

Good morning everyone,

slowly but steadily I am nearing the edge of sanity. I am not overly technically gifted and, to my dismay, certain members of the WoTC support staff aren't, either. I'm not sure I actually expect a solution as much as I hope for an explanation of an issue that's presented itself to me.

The issue is as follows: One particular application (namely Magic the Gathering Arena (yes, I am aware that there's a game subforum, but this really is a networking issue - promise!)) refuses to stay connected to the host for any amount of time. In these trying times (being a teacher and confined to my home desk due to Corona) I spend way too much time on online games, none of which are giving me any sort of grief. I'm on a gigabit fiber connection that's, similarly, never acted up on me before. But for some reason I have not been able to maintain a connection to the MtGA host for longer than about 2 minutes in the past 3 days (never had an issue with the game before). I contacted their support who, as they usually do, presented me with a list of off-the-shelf solutions. Suffice it to say, none of them worked, except for the last one.

A VPN. I'm in Germany and the CSR suggested I try a US-based VPN and this fixed it. I don't plan on making use of a VPN as a long-term solution, but at least I get to scratch the itch in the meantime, right? Well, I wrote back to the support who said, and I quote:

My laptop which i have recently installed a fresh xp copy on, is having internet connectivity issues. there is only 1 driver that works for the wireless lan and 1 driver for the wire lan that but that wont work for some reason but im not concerned as long as the wifi works on it. the issue is that every 2-5 mins the wireless disconnects, and reconnects taking anywhere from 1 min - several mins to aquire ip address. i could understand if it was clear across my home away from the wireless router, but its stationed right next to the router, so there should be no interferrance problems. i use halfdone's unknown devices driver informer and that tells me that the proper drivers are all installed on my laptop and that i dont need anything else. device manager confirms. i dont understand why my wired internet wont work if it has the proper drivers, and i dont understand why the wifi cuts out like it does. would you assume that its the router ( though its brand new and doesnt cut on my other wifi systems ) or the computer?

Hello all,

I am new here but hoping still that someone might have the answer to an ongoing issue within our network.

I am dealing with a large network (large in the physical size not necessarily how many PCs connected). There are 4 different buildings that connect with a fiber optical connection. Each building has it's own internet source. I deal with two of these buildings. The connection runs underground. When I link our two buildings, the networked PCs communicate but the internet connection is lost.

I am not sure if the other buildings have these connection issues but I've noticed that at one end it looks like an adapter is connecting the fiber optical possible to a cat5 looking jack. Is it possible that that's the issue?

Have you heard of this before. I happens to be a POS system that we need working between the two buildings. So apart from one or two office computers on the network that needs internet we need it for processing credit cards as well.

Any help will do. Sorry if I wasn't all that specific or clear... I'm still new at this stuff.

Thanks!

Dana
