How to avoid corrupted downloads

Q: How to avoid corrupted downloads

I absolutely hate the idea of spending the time to download a large file (Like Windows 8 Consumer Preview) only to realize something went wrong.

Basically, I'm asking whether Direct Downloading or Torrenting allow for less-corrupted downloads.

Preferred Solution: How to avoid corrupted downloads

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: How to avoid corrupted downloads

I think a torrent is better for avoiding corruption, however I also have good luck using DownThemAll extension with Firefox.

I have computer 1 with Office 365 Outlook - with email account. If I have a second computer and copy the .pst file from one computer to the other, I know that when I open Outlook all the existing emails will be there, calendar, etc. But if I have Outlook set to leave messages on the server, will the old messages be downloaded causing duplicates? I know that Outlook keeps an ID record of emails that are downloaded - but is this kept within the *pst file? If so then it should work that I can copy the *pst file and carry on without duplicates. I can understand that if I created a new blank account with nothing in it, then the old files would download...but will this still happen if I just copy & paste the email *pst account file across (keeping the name the same) - same Office 365....

I've been having this problem for a while now, so I decided to format my hard drive and start with a fresh (and different) copy of XP, and I am still having the same problem.

When I download files off the internet, (Google Earth, Adobe Acrobat, large files such as demos and the like) they download to my desktop and then when I open them they are corrupted. Sometimes this happens with small files, which when I download again sometimes work fine, but larger files are almost always corrupted when I try to open them or install them.

The hard drive I am using is partitioned because it is too big to run as a single drive, and I am on wireless internet. I suspect one of these is the cause. I have tried the hard drive in two configurations, which is C is the large drive and "unallocated" dead-space as the rest, and I have tried creating a partition with the unallocated space, calling this E. I get the problem with both configurations.

Another symptom I'm getting is that when pictures load online they sometimes load halfway down before coming discoloured. I have to delete all the internet files and clear the cashe to get them to load up properly the second time. Sometimes they start to corrupt in different places, and sometimes they don't corrupt at all.

Does anyone know what the hell is wrong with my PC? Because I basically can't download anything off the internet. Much thanks, guys.

Just about every time I download a large file, it gets corrupted. It's been like this ever since I got my computer and it's really getting on my nerves. This happens with everything... sometimes things I download are unable to even be installed. It's really awful. What could be causing this? I've tried running both Vista and XP on it; Windows Update works on neither and I get various other problems with both, such as programs crashing semi-often.

Someone suggested that I run memtest86 and a hard drive defrag to see if they're the problem. I ran memtest86 and it completed 5 passes with 0 errors. Defrag finished with no errors, I think; it just says "Last run: 5/28/2008 11:39 AM" and doesn't mention anything about errors.

I also just flashed my BIOS at someone's suggestion. It seemed to go well... Upon reboot I had to reinstall my video card and motherboard drivers for some reason, and now there's a fan in my computer (not sure if it's my video card, CPU, or what) that won't go below 100% and it's as loud as a lawnmower. Maybe one of my driver downloads got corrupted as does everything else I download?

Thanks.

Files that I download off the internet (installers, zips, videos, etc.) are frequently corrupted. Files download completely, that is, Firefox doesn't pause the download half way through or anything like that, but when I try to open the files after download it tells me they are corrupted. I have tried running with a download manager but it hasn't helped at all. I've tried a couple different pieces of security software to make sure I'm malware free but the problem still occurs. Starting about a week ago my husband & began experiencing issues with corrupt downloads. Initially we believed that the issues were solely involving Unreal Tournament (GOTY edition) however, I realized that it has effected the download games I use too.

He is able to play game maps which he has had downloaded on the computer previously. I can play or install games which I downloaded previously. However, all new downloads/maps seem to be corrupted either in download or install. I have tried multiple sites (for game trials) though I have a subscription to one of the big sites. The files are consistently corrupt. AVG has not picked up any virii at this point.

I have just re-installed Vista on my machine and updated SP1, SP2 and all of the latest updates.

I have an issue where all downloads via IE7, IE8 or Firefox are corrupted. Browsing and windows update work fine. Has anyone else seen this? It very odd, it all worked before I re-installed but I didn't change any hardware.

Other machines on the same router work fine, this is how I downloaded the service packs and other software. Then have to transfer via USB stick.

A:Corrupted Downloads

Try hooking up your modem to another computer and see if the downloads work. If not, then contact your own ISP tech support.

But if it works fine on another computer and the problem only persists on your one computer, then you can try a download manager like download accelerator plus (DAP): Download Accelerator Plus - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

Try downloading something with a clean boot: Download Accelerator Plus - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

And also just to be safe, go into safe mode and run the elevated command prompt and type in: sfc /scannow
and also try to reset winsock: How to Do a Winsock Reset | eHow.com

im not sure if a winsock reset will work though

I'm having trouble extracting/running downloaded programs. When I download them and go to extract/run them, I get various error messages, along the lines of the file is corrupted. A little background information:
I've tried multiple downloads, and all fail.
I've tried using different browsers, same results.
I've tried downloading updates for programs (even Windows update), and these all say they're corrupted as well.
I'm looking for a solution to this problem. Note that I am unable to download and run any diagnostic software due to this problem.

Since yesterday, every file (specifically .rar and .mkv) I try to download stops in 79~80Mb, then it returns downloading and stops again near to 100% and, finally, completes. All corrupted. When I try to open a video, mostly of it is cut or skips to the end. Apparently the internet disconnects between the pauses in the downloads (doesn't happens if I don't download) . I've already tried to use CCleaner, re-install the browsers and using another computer (no problem downloading). Any ideas?

I am out of ideas at this point. Initially, after I had my computer setup with all drivers installed and what not, I could not execute any downloaded program, ranging from bit-torrent to Mozilla. Eventually, I downloaded the Mozilla installer on another computer and flashdrive'd it over to the computer in question and that seemed to fix that problem. Now, however, I tried to download and install Java via Firefox and I get another error, that a .msi file is corrupt. It seems that regardless of how I download a file, windows finds a way to corrupt it. Is there a patch available? Could it be the hard drive itself? I've already reinstalled Vista with SP1 but I just cannot figure this out. Here are my specs:

What video files and applications are you downloading, and from what sites?

The C drive in your computer has a capacity of 465.75 GB and has only 7.25 GB of free space, so it's almost 99% full.

I'm guessing the F and L drives are external hard drives.

Hello, after a recent and much need reformatting I had to revert to an old XP disk which was not the one sent by the manufacturer of my computer (Dell, yeah bad choice haha) and I had lost the original install disks. After reformatting, I downloaded all the drivers possible from Dell.com for my specific computer, a dell dimension e521, which has an integrated 440x Broadcom controller which, before I was able to install from online, seeing as I couldnt access it without an ethernet driver, I used XP's update driver feature from computer management for that driver and selected off of the flash drive which I had loaded an up to date version that I had aquired from another computer. After that and a reboot i was able to use the internet but i found that I was only able to dowbload roughly smaller than 5MB... I was able to install World of Warcraft from the website without any issues and its around 6.5 GB... Which was strange. but once i began downloading the patches for it (one had an updated launcher and tools and around 7MB) it wouldnt work... Only the big or really small files seem to not get "corrupted". In addition to that, I am not even able to download firefox. I have searched around for a while but my attempts at correcting this have been to no avail. I have recently noticed that when I try to download software (.exe) from the Internet, every single setup file I download comes out corrupt. It's the same for all updates I've tried for various applications, and I know it's not the site the files are coming from because I can't even download updates from the Windows site. I have tried saving the files instead of running them directly after the download, and the same thing happened.

I'll usually get a message like "the .exe file you are attempting to run has been corrupted" or "the setup files are corrupted", but occasionally the programs "fail to initialize". Multiple downloads do not solve anything. At first I thought the problem might be with the firewall I have on my computer, but disabling the firewall did nothing either.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

I have a problem that I had encountered for some time and it involves using the Google Chrome browser on my computer running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64.

Everytime I go to a certain website with some pictures on it, some of the pictures that I view on the webpage - tend to get corrupted. The similar case happens whenever I download a file off a certain website.

To get around the corrupted picture issue, I have to open in "incognito mode" on Google Chrome. As for downloads, I sometimes have to save a file on one area of my computer and then copy to another drive. I also have to use another web browser in most cases. I've formulated my problem using a different web browser (for example, I've downloaded a file from the Comodo Ice Dragon web browser - but it give me the same result. I also used Comodo Dragon web browser - it was able to open the file without any problems).

I have a few add-ons/extensions on my Google Chrome browser and I'm not sure if that will play a role on having my downloads corrupted.

I've attached a few pictures of the problem, just to give some illustration - and a better idea.

Worse case scenario, I may have to designate one web browser for downloads and another for watching youtube videos, etc. Reinstalling my OS isn't an option.

Any suggestions to my situation?

Hi

I'm running Windows XP media center edition verion 2002 service pack 3. Computer is a HP Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2250 @1.73GHz 1 GB Ram.

First problem I am having is that I am being diverted about half the time from a google link to some random website like "http://findwhati.com." It was not the link that I clicked so I have to hit back and try it again. Other times many pages just have a hard time loading completely or at all for that matter (very annoying). "Error on page" message pops up at the bottom left corner of the browser. Now when I try to go to google, this comes up "Internet explorer cannot open internet site http://www.google.com/. Operation Aborted." Using ESET NOD32 Antivirus Business Edition.

Second problem is that I am unable to download many files as of late. I tried downloading 3 or 4 different spyware removers and get this message everytime "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program." These free and recommended spyware and malware programs were .exe files. I also tried getting Firefox. I saved it to my desktop and when I went to open it up "curropt file." Awesome. I have no idea how I was able to DL HijackThis but whatever I guess. Here is the log.

Let me start by saying I'm sorry if I am posting this in the wrong place - I don't even know if this is a hardware or software problem, which gives you some idea of the level of idiot you're dealing with here. In the last 10 days or so, for no reason I can think of, I've been having download problems. Any podcast or music I download comes out corrupted, i.e. choppy like a scratched CD. This happens no matter which of various sites I'm downloading from, so it's not a problem with any one site, and these are respectable long-established places I download from, not sketchy legal-grey-areas on the fringes of the web.

So far, I have:

- reset Firefox
- tried using a different browser
- reset my router (more than once)
- run full scans for virus, spyware, and malware infections
- run checkdisk and a memory diagnostic
- tweaked and finally uninstalled Quicktime
- tried downloading to a different destination

None of this has done the job. At the same time, Steam cannot seem to download the new Skyrim patch for me. It keeps suspending the download, and says I have a 0 bytes download rate. Speedtest.net shows my up- and download rates as being their normal selves, and Pingtest.net gave me an A grade, with 0% packet loss. I'm completely stumped, this doesn't seem to make any sense.

I cannot face the prospect of commuting every day without podcasts and music to get me through - please help!

I have used this website several times in the past to find solutions to some of my problems. I have normally been able for find what I need, without asking for help. Not for this problem, though. So, I am one of your newest members to this really cool site. I donated $20 to support this valuable resource.

Here's the problem:

All files that are downloaded are corrupted (or damaged).

A few weeks ago (around Sept 26), I noticed that my AntiVirus was not up-to-date (I got the MS security warning that virus prot was not running). I tried the "Live Update" feature and it didn't work (“Live update could not uncompress the list of available updates. The update list somehow got corrupted. You need to run LiveUpdate again to get a new update list”). I just shrugged it off and figured I would fix it later. Then I realized that I could not download other stuff, like updates to SpyBot S&D, iTunes, Typhoon Rising, MS Office, etc..

I was able to manually d/l (on another machine) updates to SpyBot and Symantec AntiVirus. I ran scans and found no problems. (Some spyware that was fixed.) I d/l-ed NOD32 and updated (manually from another machine) and that still didn’t find any problems.

It seems that data is modified on all downloads. I am even having trouble with iTunes music downloads. They seem to be corrupted, too. I think it even affects my browser, because I cannot load pages sometimes. Sometimes a refresh helps, sometimes not.

I'm not sure if I clicked on something I shouldn't have or what but I feel pretty sure there's some kind of malware or virus on my system. All my downloads would stop at 99% and not finish, and attempts to download malwarebytes resulted in "setup files corrupted". I already had malwarebytes installed but it will not update, neither will my other programs, as soon as they get to 99% the whole bar resets. Images on websites are loading broken and halfway, and video won't load past 6 seconds or so.

I've run:
Malwarebytes (Quick and Full scan) and Chameleon (Quick and full also)
Avast! Antivirus (Quick, Full, and Boot-time scan)
HitmanPro
Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit

I ran a full scan of Malwarebytes and Avast in Safe Mode and the only things found were 2 trojans by Malwarebytes and after they were removed the problem never went away. This never happened until a few days ago and the internet connection is fine. Conduit was found by HitmanPro but I don't think it was removed. I did download MotionJoy sometimes around this realization which afterwards I heard was adware but since then i've uninstalled but of course that would mean nothing. I'm fresh out of ideas so I would appreciate any and all help.

This has gone on for a while now, and I posted my DDS in that section of the forum, but that didn't help. Pretty much what is happening is this:
1. When I go to download something, it stops at around 95%-98% and pauses. If it ever resumes again, the download is corrupt.
2. Malwarebytes Antimalware stops responding every time I start a scan.
3. If I try to stream anything like Youtube, it won't even load, and if it does the visual is all messed up and there is no sound, then is just stops.
How should I fix this?

Hi!
Sunddenly one day, chrome started to show images like this:
Some sites this occurs, others, dont (like facebook and youtube).
This initially started on chrome, but extended to firefox and internet explorer. So I decided to reinstall my OS(for other reasons, thar you can see here)
Sometime the error appears, sometime not.
But stuff started to get strange. Downloads from Chrome started to getting corrupted. The file was downloading instantly but not working and with error messages, like this:
When I tried to download with internet explorer, it was written that: "could download for some reason" or something like that. Then I clicked retry and everything went ok.
But, programs that use internet to install itselves, like Skype, Steam, and my paid Norton are not working. With steam i managed to disable the firewall and it updated. But the games arent downloading:
When I click to update one of then, it stays on the update process for less then 1 second:
And then it move out.
I use a D-Link DWA-132 Wireless N USB Adapter(rev. and have a Windows 7 x64.
TLDR:
Everyting that needs internet to install/update isnt working. Downloads and images on chrome are getting corrupted.

I've recently ordered a PC from CyberPower, and had to buy a copy of Windows XP from Newegg to run the OS on it, of course; I wound up purchasing XP Pro SP3, as it has served me very well on a previous computer in the past.

After installing all the drivers that came on the discs, everything appeared to be working normally. However, no downloads of mine will work. Instead, on every single download when I try to open it I get a warning declaring that there is no valid digital signature; when I press Run anyway, I usually receive a Corrupt file message of some sort. Both digital signature and corrupt file messages occur downloading very trusted programs at their home page, including Firefox, iTunes, Ad-Aware, AVG, Spybot: S&D, Steam, and Mozilla Opera, off the top of my head.

This only happens when I'm trying to install programs I've downloaded from the internet. The connection works fine, the download proceeds smoothly, but the installation is always where I fail. I've spent several hours with a MS employee yesterday and we both seem stumped. Installations from inserting a disc appear to be working fine, as I've had no problem installing drivers as well as programs like Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007.

This problem has become more than a little annoying, and I hope you guys can help provide some better insight as to what the problem is and hopefully help me rectify it! Thank you very much for your time and patience.

A:Valid digital signatures/corrupted downloads

After you download the file, copy it onto a flash drive and try to run it on a different computer. That way we will at least know whether the problem is with the internet download or with the process of running the program.

After I upgraded to SP2 (win XP) I started getting these errors. Corrupted images and other downloads. I went back to SP1 and had no problem.
Went back and forth (sp1 - sp2) few times with no luck and always ended up uninstalling SP2.
Last time I upgraded to SP2 I did something and it fixed the problem (but I can not recall what that was).
Now, after a HD falure I installed win XP home and upgraded it (right away) to SP2 and had terrible time downloading stuff.

I have seen somewhere mentioned on Microsoft website about this type corruption but I can not find where it was again.

Here is the sample of image corruption:
properly downloaded on the left / several trials with corruption on the right...

I do understand there are so many different system configurations but some broad idea or a clue to why this is happening (after installing SP2) would be appreciated.

I'm going to put my previous post regarding my problems with corrupted DLL files following a clean install after a major crash. This is for background purposes:
[[Just finished a clean install of Windows XP Home. Computer had black screen with error message. I made several attempts at repairing system using the original install disk. Did multiple malware and virus sweeps. Finally got it working again but it refused to update Windows Security files, constant crashes, hangs, etc. After more repair attempts and malware sweeps gave up and did clean install after backing up my files.

After spending 12 hours on the process of the clean install, installing antivirus software, browsers and security updates, the most recent Windows updates were installed as I restarted (for the 679th time today) whereupon the next bootup was preceded by the computer running CHKDSK on the blue screen. It tried to continue the boot, then went into a cycle of rebooting after the Windows loading screen (before you enter your personal account). Everytime this happened, I saw a blue screen with white type flashing by for a fourth of a second. I couldn't start in safe mode, but I managed to stop the automatic restart and here's what the message on the blue screen said:

Hey, I've been having some very strange problems from my connection lately. When I try to download files from the internet, whether it be internet videos such as from youtube (flash/quicktime etc.) drivers files, freeware programs, or most anything other than simple text documents, my downloads are always corrupted when i try to open them (internet based videos freeze up and refuse to play.)

I thought maybe it was some malware from bittorrent or dc++ (both of which i used until now) so i disconnected my storage drives and cleaned my my OS drive completely, started from scratch with a full, clean install. Installed XP+SP2, installed all drivers and essential programs, software and the like, minus -all- P2P software and storage drives which may have been infected. Basically, I quarentined all storage drives and re-made the OS boot drive so there was no chance of a virus, spyware, or anything else malicious being on it. Worked great for about two weeks, now i'm experiencing the same problem.

Also, I did notice that my download speeds on P2P were steadily dropping before I initially tried to fix the download issue (they wouls start at over 100KB/s then steadily drop to 1-5 KB/s, such as you would experience if a packet-shaper were limiting p2p.) I run on Roadrunner cable so i should get really good d/l speeds no matter what i do. I could really care less if i get p2p working again, didn't really use it much anyways.
