I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I upgraded my XP to Windows 7 and the original monitor is not widescreen compatible. I recently bought
AOC E2070SWN-B 20" LED Widescreen Monitor - 1600x900, 5 ms, 16:9, 20M:1, Vesa Mount, (Refurbished) - RB-E2070SWN-B and I am still unable to see the whole screen correctly.

Thank you for your assistance.

A:Upgraded XP to Windows, Upgraded Monitor, not configuring

You didn't provide ANY information about and a description of your computer, so we have no idea what graphics device it has.

It's my guess its graphics device doesn't support Windows 7, so it's using a default VGA mode.

Also, i get (program not responding) alot when i wanna close out some windows i have open,,, any thoughts on that?

My reason is very simple.
Windows 7 Home Premium does not support more than 16 GB of RAM.
My new rig has 32 GB of RAM
I could have gone to Windows 7 Pro - but that actually cost more than upgrading to Windows 8 Pro, and 8 Pro was readily available at our local Staples store.

That is it in a nutshell.

It is kinda cool to be on the `bleeding`edge of technology. But as I post in the gaming forum so far my experience with game`s playable in Windows 8 has been 50% - 3 of 6 games I have loaded so far have worked.

On the productivity side MS Office 10 & Adobe Elements 10 both work great, even MS Outlook 2007 works fine.

Google Chrome is doing fine, but I broke IE 10 and it will only operate if I make it the default browser, I`ll rant about that elsewhere.

I miss my screen gadgets from Windows 7.

I have not yet got the hang of Windows 8 and spend 95% of my time in Desktop.

Compatibility problems creep up now and then, e.g. my motherboard has something called Charger+ which promises to charge your phone or other USB connected device faster and when the pc is turned off. Asus`s charger+ proved to be incompatible. Oh well I can live without that and not notice it.

I upgraded on the 26th of October the day they released the DVD`s in the stores. Downloading would have been cheaper but not realistic as we live in rural Canada and our only options for internet are dial up or satellite. Satellite is far superior to dial up, but on a clear day I get 1 to 1.4 M... Read more

I'm personally back in 7 but do have plans to go back to Win8 when some of my customization tools are out of alpha stages(win8), another reason is that I use an alternative desktop shell meaning I run an alternative desktop.

Don't get me wrong, if weren't for this I wouldn't go back but I will be back at SP1 which should be early 2013 or even by the end of the year.

However I am glad I got 8 when I did otherwise I probably would have paid later on, I'll probably either buy win8 pro for a fresh install and use home on my parents PC.

Another reason, aero. Sorry love the squared edges but I miss the transparency's, and glass effects.. shallow yes, but oh well to each his own. Also, video drivers. While nvidia has released a WHQL driver for 8 I'll wait to Sp1 or even til sp1 beta to fully upgrade all my machines.

I do believe we will see aero in win8 via windowsblinds, or someone writing a shell that makes it look and feel like vista/7. It wouldn't surprise me if we see it back via an update from Microsoft, the taskbar is fine with a basic color but man.. the windows remind me of windows 9X.. at least allow for gradients..

I just completed this process and thought I would post my experience doing this. My original install was an upgrade from xp to 7 home premium 32 bit. I decided to upgrade to 64 bit to maximise my memory usage as 32 bit would not recognise my 4gb of ram. When I put the dvd into my drive it gave me a warning that "the operating system is not supported, reboot and boot from cd". After enabling first boot from cd in my bios it went right to the installer and all went well,it even seemed to go a little quicker than the original 32 bit install. After installation completed all the 64 bit drivers were installed for all my hardware and everything is running great. The only device I was not able to install a driver for was a usb hub that windows would not accept the 32 bit drivers for. This device had installed correctly with 32 bit. It did create a Windows.old folder and a program files (x86) folder along with the program files folder. 32 bit programs get installed into the x86 folder. All in all this was a very easy process and I hope this will help anybody that is thinking of doing this

I've been a long-time visitor in the Win 98 forum. Well, I just upgraded to 2K Pro. A bunch of things sure are different! So I expect I'll be a frequent visitor here until I figure out how to tweak this new (and much better) OS.

First question: How do I change the folder view default? I prefer "view details" but the default seems to be "large icons." I change the setting but it keeps reverting.

I also want to learn about 2K's services and which ones can be turned off. I think I'll try some forum searches first.

A:i upgraded to w10 at 32-bit instead of 64. What should I do?

As long as you have 32-bit Windows 10 installed and fully activated you are fine. You will have to download the 64-bit ISO file, make a Windows 10 USB flash drive or DVD, boot the computer from that and do a clean re-install of Windows 10 64-bit. You can't change between 32-bit and 64-bit by "upgrading". You have to clean install the opposite architecture.

Tried upgrading my CPU from a 3800+ AM2 CPU to a 5200+ AM2. Reset the CMOS, becasue of previous overclocking, and put the new processor in and fired the beast up.

At first it just hung at the screen before POST. Sometimes it would get to the POST and tell me my checksum wasn't correct and default had been loaded (For BIOS, I presume). I couldn't do anything as the USB keyboard hadn't been loaded, so I tried a spare PS/2 keyboard and could get into BIOS. I saved and exited and got back to POST where it said the same thing again (checksum blah blah) so I tried pressing F1 to continue, but it just hung at a black screen.

Anyone know what could be up with it?

Rest of my specs can be seen from drop down.

A:Upgraded CPU, but PC not having it.

Check which BIOS version you have and compare it to the updated ones over at the ASUS site. There is a bios update that supports newer CPU's.

2 x 512Mb PC3200 (PC400) DDR Memory
460W Akasa Black Nickel Ultra quiet
Powercolour ATI Radeon X700 SE PCI Express Graphics
----------------------------------------------------------

I booted from my windows CD and chose to repair the existing installation. It all seemed to work fine. Then after set up completed, when i come to the screen asking me how i want to start windows i.e. something like:

Safe Mode
Safe mode with command prompt
Last working configuration
Start Windows normally

At this point, whatever way i choose to start windows, the pc just restarts almost immediately after selection. I really dont know what to do!

One thing, that may also be relevant. My hard drive is partitioned into 4 parts. When i try to boot in safe mode, and all the files start loading, they are listed as ...

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32.. etc.

I suspect that it should be c:\WINDOWS ... etc.

Perhaps this is the source of the problem. I really dont know.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

My question regards 41 "Optional" updates all labeled "Update for Windows 7". What is the collective wisdom regarding installing such updates. I'm not inclined to go into the MS Knowledge Base and analyse them all (or any, for that matter), so it occurred to me some experience sole here on TSG might have some wisdom to share.

I bought this laptop because of the size of the screen (two kids, so comes in handy) and because it had a dash of performance.  Also, truthfully, it was a bit of a hasty purchase, but not looking to replace so only one direction to head... forward!  I do some gaming and recently have been winning some discussions at home with the fiance on upgrading my laptop for performance.  I replaced the 1TB hard drive with a Samsung Evo 850 500gb SSD, moving the old into an external enclosure.  Basically, I'm trying to figure out what next.  Outside of the SSD and a potential new graphics card (which of course can get expensive in a hurry), I don't really know what else I can replace/upgrade to improve performance.  Cash is of course a major player here, but even if I can't afford at the moment the knowledge will be handy so any suggestion is appreciated.      Thank you!

Welcome
If you have an HP laptop which came with Vista preinstalled and you, now have a Vista DVD, 64 bit, from HP, you can use it if:
Your computer can handle 64 bit
You use the 64 bit on only one computer and you do not use the x64 on any other computer.
Finally, it may be better to use the factory restoration partition. We can help if you give us the make and model of your computer.

I'm wondering if it's at all possible to upgrade my CPU and maaaaybe my GPU, too. If so, how far can I upgrade it? I know sometimes you can only go up to a certain point before you need a whole new motherboard. If you'd like to, you could give me the same information for my RAM and motherboard, just in case I want to go all out at some point (though in that case, I should probably buy a whole new computer... maybe next time I'll go with a desktop instead >_> they're a better bang-for-buck).

These are my laptop specs, I have a HP Pavilion dv6700 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC.

I am trying to help a friend clean up a computer that has Windows XP installed as an upgrade to ME. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the problems, but I am curious to know what people think.

One of the main things I would like help with if I could get it, is that the "Process Manager" shows a constant 20 - 30% CPU useage. I have cleaned up a lot on this computer and am not getting that to clear up. The computer is faster than it was, but I would still like to get it to stop running so much in the background.

I am attaching a current HJT startup log. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix this, or if there might be something else you need to see.

Thanks

A:ME upgraded to XP

Installing XP over the top of a disaster like ME (pardon the language) is a recipe for disaster. She/he will have a much more stable system if she/he backs up the data and performs a clean install of XP.

Installing on top of ME ( pardon the language ) brings forward all the problems that ME had . . and there were plenty.

Hello, I've searched for this issue but have not found any answers.

I just upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 today, and haven't been able to login at all.

When I boot up, I reach the sign in screen and it has my name, a password field, and a next button.

When I enter the wrong password, it says that it's wrong and gives me a new chance.

However, everytime I enter the right password it locks the password field and all buttons stop working, then has the blue circle and then restarts. This has happened 6 times.

Win10 installed through windows update, so I don't have a physical disk, and not sure how to enter the recovery environment.

Any help, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running a custom rig with a radeon r9 270x on an msi board with an amd 8320, and 16 gb of ram connected to a cheapo 4k TV by hdmi.

I'm typing this on my phone.

Hello Everyone, well it seem i lost all my Virtual machines ( insiders win 10 plus a few other VM ) when i upgraded to Genuine WIN 10 Pro, i was using VMware Workstation prior to the upgrade, i would now like to try Hyper V, since its built in to Win 10, is it possible to point Hyper V to the location of my previous VM's and have them work on Hyper V ?

Thanks in advance

I have a dualboot WIN7/Vista Home Premium PC at home. NEVER use Vista anymore.

Can I buy an Upgrade WIN7 and do an inplace upgrade of my WIN7 system, or do I have do buy a new copy (full) and do a clean install over a freshly reformatted partition?

Many thanks and also thanks for these forums in general. The wonders of the internet....!

If you mean upgrading from RC to RTM (final) with an upgrade copy of RTM, then I believe that would be a no. Plus, upgrades can cause many problems ESPECIALLY from RC to Final. :|

I recommend only doing clean installs, you could upgrade from Vista though since its a legit OS and is activated I'd assume.

I've got a compaq 5100ca with AMD duron 900mhz and 40 gig HD it came stock with 128mb dimm ram with 2 more vacant memory slots. I bought 2x 256mb ram modules from e-bay. When I removed the 128 module and installed the 2x256 my computer starts up and shows 504mb memory ok and 128mb memory error but then proceeds to my desktop and everything seems ok but then it freezes on my desktop. I have to shut it down using the button then when I start up again the computer wants to do a disk check, after doing the disk check it seems ok but then goes to my desktop and eventually freezes again. I've taken out one of the 256 modules and the computer seems to work fine, I've switched the 2 modules and it still works fine with only one module installed, the compaq site says I should be able to go to 712mb ram, Am I missing something here? Do I have to perform some kind of voodoo dance on my computer to make this work properly???? The 2 memory sticks are both pc100 164 pin dimm, but they are not made by the same company one is valueram? and the other is samsung would could this be the problem? If I put the old 128mb ram along with just one 256ram stick would this be of any benefit? I just want to be able to allow my kids to play the sims game without slowing things to a crawl....Any help is very much appreciated....

A:upgraded RAM now it freezes !!!!

the 128 + the 256 would give you a performance boost.

Samsung tries to be 100% compatible and so far I haven't had a problem with them.
ValueRam isn't quite as kind.

You should run either
http://freshmeat.net/projects/memtest86/
or
http://www.memtest86.com/ to see if your RAM is bad.

Hi gang

I just replaced my stock Samsung DDR-PC3200 256Mb CL3 sticks with two Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz CL3 sticks and everything works wonderfully! Thanks to all the other posters I used for reference here.

My question is, now that I have these two extra 256Mb sticks leftover, is it better to just stow them somewhere for back-up or should I install them in slots 2 and 4 (I'm in dual channel mode)? Will I see any noticable problems/improvements/anything? My mobo will take up to 2Gig, and I'm not really looking for more performance, just a handier place to store the leftover RAM, lol.

I've read many conflicting opinions about other posters situations and just wanted to get some feedback on my specific set-up. Your opinions and experiences are very educational and much appreaciated!

Just a curious thought, and I am unsure if it is possible, but has anyone had an installation of Windows Xp and Upgraded to Vista, then 7, then 8, and finally 8.1? Or is that not even possible. I am assuming not as the hardware has changed a bunch from 2001 to 2014 (Now).

A:Has anyone upgraded Windows from XP to 8.1?

Yes it is possible as you describe it. Only a direct upgrade from XP is not possible.

But I want to know what should be upgraded. Its a Dell OptiPlex 210L that runs windows XP with 512 MB Ram.

I just found out that the computer shop at my school repairs computers. The shop actually teaches us how to set up networks, install operating systems, and how to take apart computers, but the upperclassmen actually repairs and upgrades computers; all I would need to do is pay for the parts.

The computer can handle 4 GB ram, should I get it maxed out? Also, I am going to get my CD drive replaced, because it has problems opening.

A:I am going to get my computer upgraded

Providing the service tag or using the tech guy system info tool will help someone tell you which upgrades to look at.
Also stating for what purpose you are using your computer and your budget.

As a basic start upgrading your ram is almost always beneficial and yes, you should max it out to 4GB. If you are buying the parts yourself make sure they are compatible, crucial is good for making sure the ram you buy is compatible.

Hi, I'm not a genious with computers so I thought of asking from you guys.

I ordered a computer a month ago with Asus P5RD1-V Motherboard. However, when I received the computer, the motherboard was broken. Well, sent it back and got a new one = Asus P5SD2-X. They told me that this is the same as what I received at first but an upgraded model. It is really so?? I have my doubts. I tried to find info from net but have no clue what so ever how u determine if something is 'upgraded'.

Here are the links for the Mobos:
The first one I got:
http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/asus_p5rd1-v/3.html

And the upgraded replacement:
http://shop.pcmag.com/shop/product_specs/ASUS+P5SD2X+Motherboard+Products+/28505699.aspx

Thanks for those who have time and will to answer

K
