Preferred Solution: Can the CPU be upgraded?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I upgraded my XP to Windows 7 and the original monitor is not widescreen compatible. I recently bought
AOC E2070SWN-B 20" LED Widescreen Monitor - 1600x900, 5 ms, 16:9, 20M:1, Vesa Mount, (Refurbished) - RB-E2070SWN-B and I am still unable to see the whole screen correctly.

Thank you for your assistance.

A:Upgraded XP to Windows, Upgraded Monitor, not configuring

You didn't provide ANY information about and a description of your computer, so we have no idea what graphics device it has.

It's my guess its graphics device doesn't support Windows 7, so it's using a default VGA mode.

Hi all, I hope you can help me here.

I've just upgraded several bits of hardware:

----------------------------------------------------------
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 32/64Bit CPU S9
Asus A8N-SLI SE S939 NF4 SLi DDR400
2 x 512Mb PC3200 (PC400) DDR Memory
460W Akasa Black Nickel Ultra quiet
Powercolour ATI Radeon X700 SE PCI Express Graphics
----------------------------------------------------------

I booted from my windows CD and chose to repair the existing installation. It all seemed to work fine. Then after set up completed, when i come to the screen asking me how i want to start windows i.e. something like:

Safe Mode
Safe mode with command prompt
Last working configuration
Start Windows normally

At this point, whatever way i choose to start windows, the pc just restarts almost immediately after selection. I really dont know what to do!

One thing, that may also be relevant. My hard drive is partitioned into 4 parts. When i try to boot in safe mode, and all the files start loading, they are listed as ...

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32.. etc.

I suspect that it should be c:\WINDOWS ... etc.

Perhaps this is the source of the problem. I really dont know.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Steve

A:i upgraded to w10 at 32-bit instead of 64. What should I do?

As long as you have 32-bit Windows 10 installed and fully activated you are fine. You will have to download the 64-bit ISO file, make a Windows 10 USB flash drive or DVD, boot the computer from that and do a clean re-install of Windows 10 64-bit. You can't change between 32-bit and 64-bit by "upgrading". You have to clean install the opposite architecture.

Have recently upgraded to windows 7 pro on a nice new 1TB hard drive. I have removed the previously installed win xp drive, and that is now in an external caddy.

I have been in the pricess of moving the files from the xp drive to the win7 drive. I forgto to backup my IE8 bookmarks before the switch over, and have tried to find the actual bookmark links via windows explorer but can't find them.

Any idea on where they may be?

I have tried looking in dos and setting\users\favourites...but the bookmarks are not in there.

I'm personally back in 7 but do have plans to go back to Win8 when some of my customization tools are out of alpha stages(win8), another reason is that I use an alternative desktop shell meaning I run an alternative desktop.

Don't get me wrong, if weren't for this I wouldn't go back but I will be back at SP1 which should be early 2013 or even by the end of the year.

However I am glad I got 8 when I did otherwise I probably would have paid later on, I'll probably either buy win8 pro for a fresh install and use home on my parents PC.

Another reason, aero. Sorry love the squared edges but I miss the transparency's, and glass effects.. shallow yes, but oh well to each his own. Also, video drivers. While nvidia has released a WHQL driver for 8 I'll wait to Sp1 or even til sp1 beta to fully upgrade all my machines.

I do believe we will see aero in win8 via windowsblinds, or someone writing a shell that makes it look and feel like vista/7. It wouldn't surprise me if we see it back via an update from Microsoft, the taskbar is fine with a basic color but man.. the windows remind me of windows 9X.. at least allow for gradients..

Ran the Upgrade Adviser which said my old XP Home Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop was compatible, so I did the deed and am VERY pleased with the result. After I got it up and running, I went through the laborious installation of Windows Updates. I didn't actually count them, but there was well over 100.

My question regards 41 "Optional" updates all labeled "Update for Windows 7". What is the collective wisdom regarding installing such updates. I'm not inclined to go into the MS Knowledge Base and analyse them all (or any, for that matter), so it occurred to me some experience sole here on TSG might have some wisdom to share.

'Preciate any and all thoughts/suggestions.

I bought this laptop because of the size of the screen (two kids, so comes in handy) and because it had a dash of performance.  Also, truthfully, it was a bit of a hasty purchase, but not looking to replace so only one direction to head... forward!  I do some gaming and recently have been winning some discussions at home with the fiance on upgrading my laptop for performance.  I replaced the 1TB hard drive with a Samsung Evo 850 500gb SSD, moving the old into an external enclosure.  Basically, I'm trying to figure out what next.  Outside of the SSD and a potential new graphics card (which of course can get expensive in a hurry), I don't really know what else I can replace/upgrade to improve performance.  Cash is of course a major player here, but even if I can't afford at the moment the knowledge will be handy so any suggestion is appreciated.      Thank you!

Hi, Please don't think about upgrading video card, if you had plenty of money, buy a new machine, don't try to upgrade video card on your laptop, actually nearly all laptops. The following link shows its specs:       http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04493729 You still have room to add 8GB of RAM to have 16GB. Please check the existing RAM and buy the same (even same brand). Regards.

I am trying to help a friend clean up a computer that has Windows XP installed as an upgrade to ME. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the problems, but I am curious to know what people think.

One of the main things I would like help with if I could get it, is that the "Process Manager" shows a constant 20 - 30% CPU useage. I have cleaned up a lot on this computer and am not getting that to clear up. The computer is faster than it was, but I would still like to get it to stop running so much in the background.

I am attaching a current HJT startup log. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to fix this, or if there might be something else you need to see.

Thanks

A:ME upgraded to XP

Installing XP over the top of a disaster like ME (pardon the language) is a recipe for disaster. She/he will have a much more stable system if she/he backs up the data and performs a clean install of XP.

Installing on top of ME ( pardon the language ) brings forward all the problems that ME had . . and there were plenty.

Tried upgrading my CPU from a 3800+ AM2 CPU to a 5200+ AM2. Reset the CMOS, becasue of previous overclocking, and put the new processor in and fired the beast up.

At first it just hung at the screen before POST. Sometimes it would get to the POST and tell me my checksum wasn't correct and default had been loaded (For BIOS, I presume). I couldn't do anything as the USB keyboard hadn't been loaded, so I tried a spare PS/2 keyboard and could get into BIOS. I saved and exited and got back to POST where it said the same thing again (checksum blah blah) so I tried pressing F1 to continue, but it just hung at a black screen.

Anyone know what could be up with it?

Rest of my specs can be seen from drop down.

A:Upgraded CPU, but PC not having it.

Check which BIOS version you have and compare it to the updated ones over at the ASUS site. There is a bios update that supports newer CPU's.

Welcome
If you have an HP laptop which came with Vista preinstalled and you, now have a Vista DVD, 64 bit, from HP, you can use it if:
Your computer can handle 64 bit
You use the 64 bit on only one computer and you do not use the x64 on any other computer.
Finally, it may be better to use the factory restoration partition. We can help if you give us the make and model of your computer.

First question: How do I change the folder view default? I prefer "view details" but the default seems to be "large icons." I change the setting but it keeps reverting.

I also want to learn about 2K's services and which ones can be turned off. I think I'll try some forum searches first.

I'm wondering if it's at all possible to upgrade my CPU and maaaaybe my GPU, too. If so, how far can I upgrade it? I know sometimes you can only go up to a certain point before you need a whole new motherboard. If you'd like to, you could give me the same information for my RAM and motherboard, just in case I want to go all out at some point (though in that case, I should probably buy a whole new computer... maybe next time I'll go with a desktop instead >_> they're a better bang-for-buck).

These are my laptop specs, I have a HP Pavilion dv6700 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC.

My reason is very simple.
Windows 7 Home Premium does not support more than 16 GB of RAM.
My new rig has 32 GB of RAM
I could have gone to Windows 7 Pro - but that actually cost more than upgrading to Windows 8 Pro, and 8 Pro was readily available at our local Staples store.

That is it in a nutshell.

It is kinda cool to be on the `bleeding`edge of technology. But as I post in the gaming forum so far my experience with game`s playable in Windows 8 has been 50% - 3 of 6 games I have loaded so far have worked.

On the productivity side MS Office 10 & Adobe Elements 10 both work great, even MS Outlook 2007 works fine.

Google Chrome is doing fine, but I broke IE 10 and it will only operate if I make it the default browser, I`ll rant about that elsewhere.

I miss my screen gadgets from Windows 7.

I have not yet got the hang of Windows 8 and spend 95% of my time in Desktop.

Compatibility problems creep up now and then, e.g. my motherboard has something called Charger+ which promises to charge your phone or other USB connected device faster and when the pc is turned off. Asus`s charger+ proved to be incompatible. Oh well I can live without that and not notice it.

I upgraded on the 26th of October the day they released the DVD`s in the stores. Downloading would have been cheaper but not realistic as we live in rural Canada and our only options for internet are dial up or satellite. Satellite is far superior to dial up, but on a clear day I get 1 to 1.4 M... Read more

I just completed this process and thought I would post my experience doing this. My original install was an upgrade from xp to 7 home premium 32 bit. I decided to upgrade to 64 bit to maximise my memory usage as 32 bit would not recognise my 4gb of ram. When I put the dvd into my drive it gave me a warning that "the operating system is not supported, reboot and boot from cd". After enabling first boot from cd in my bios it went right to the installer and all went well,it even seemed to go a little quicker than the original 32 bit install. After installation completed all the 64 bit drivers were installed for all my hardware and everything is running great. The only device I was not able to install a driver for was a usb hub that windows would not accept the 32 bit drivers for. This device had installed correctly with 32 bit. It did create a Windows.old folder and a program files (x86) folder along with the program files folder. 32 bit programs get installed into the x86 folder. All in all this was a very easy process and I hope this will help anybody that is thinking of doing this

I have just completed putting a PC together, but I get no sound.
Using Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1.
Here are some images that show my confusion.

The drivers were obtained from the motherboard's website.
Motherboards - SABERTOOTH X58

I purchased new speakers, but...

I assure you the speakers are connected.
Since I am using the onboard audio system, there are no cables involved less the speaker cable.
The speaker power is turned ON.

The only this that come to mind is there might be a BIOS setting that needs to be set, but I am a newbie where BIOS settings are concerned.

BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 0603, 10/29/2010
SMBIOS Version 2.5

If this is a BIOS issue, please specify where in the BIOS I need to go to make the adjustment.

If this is not a BIOS issue, then I am lost. I need a Sound expert. No pun intended.

A:Upgraded MUTE PC

If you are using typical "computer" speakers, the "Speakers" need to be set as the Default Audio Playback Device.

What is the speakers you are using? Standard 2.1 or 2 speaker analog computer speakers need to be connected to the GREEN speaker jack.

The S/PDIF is a digital output (normally used to connect to some other audio system, such as a TV surround sound system).

I have just upgraded my processor from an intel i3 processor to an intel i7 and was wondering if i needed to update any drivers to get the most out of  my intagrated graphics card. The graphic don't seem to have improved much.

Since the Integrated graphics is in the processor, the best thing to do is run HP and Windows Updates to assure that the driver is up to date.  This is about all that you can do. Your best option would be to install a discrete video card.  This would not only improve the graphics, but would increase system performance considerably. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

So, we decided to upgrade from win 2000 to XP, and since we are new to this we are unsure about something...

Are we suppose to delete the windows 2000 now? It is taking up a lot of space and we don't use it at all. We already got all the programs we wanted and put them on disk, everything we need is out, so now what? Do we have to keep it? And if we can delete it, how do we do it?

Thanks guys, and gals

A:win2000 upgraded to Xp

If you want to start fresh, put in the XP CD and boot from it. Follow the prompts. When you get to the partitioning step, remove all partitions so the drive is all unallocated space. Create new partitions as you want and format NTFS (all within setup).

Follow the directions, read the screens, and enjoy your new XP installation.

If you are missing any drivers afterward, let us know .

I have had my pc around six years. I bought it as a windows 7 setup and last year installed windows 10. I would like to reset it

I see there is a procedure by going through settings. I haven't been far down that route as i don't know if i need something before i start

So do i need to make nackup / recovery discs? I'll put all my wanted files on another pc. What about office? I htink i still have the box it originally came in

Should i just follow the guide and see what happens?

A:Resetting PC which has been upgraded from 7 to Win 10?

Reset how back to win7 or a clean install of win10 either way you need to backup data and you would have to reinstall all software. Do you still have the option in settings to role back to 7

Have a Gateway desktop that I zero filled, reinstalled the orginal OS (98) and upgraded to XP home edition (a lot of things wrong with the computer that made me do this, kids downloading stuff and not taking off properly, virsus, the list goes on). My file system is FAT32. Can't find anything in the forums that would help make this decision, but in reading online and the (little) instruction that came with the disk it suggests to convert to NTFS. Is this necessary? Are there any benefits? Do you have to have a certain partition size?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, i helped my friend to upgrade his old computer from 98se to XP pro..now no audio comes out fo the speakers.

The soundcard is integrated in the mobo, should i upgrade bios or mobo's drivers?

A:Upgraded from 98 to XP..no audio now

It would help if you could give us the computer specs (e.g. make and model of mobo, cpu, ram, etc.) if your friend doesn't have the info he can d/l Belarc Advisor or Everest Home. Off the top of my head I would bet you need to update the audio drivers.

Hi Team,

I am owning a Thinkpad T61 [7660A42] with 4GB hosting a 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. Can this laptop be upgraded to 8GB RAM? If yes what other dependancies are to be considered and which RAM model should I consider to buy?

Good morning everyone! I've contacted Lenovo Support directly, asking if the Z70-80 is certified to run Windows 10. As yet, I have received no answer. I backed up my system, created recovery media, and downloaded updated drivers from the support pages, but I still haven't gone through with the upgrade. I am doing volunteer work in the highlands of Peru, supporting myself as a freelance writer, which makes my laptop my only connection with the outside world. I can't afford to brick my machine on an optional major upgrade. Has anyone upgraded their Z70-80 to WIndows 10 x64? If so, what were your results? Did you run into any problems? I'm not particularly worried about my current data, settings, or programs, as long as the machine works and I can put everything back on it. For now, I'm sticking with WIndows 8.1 x64, the stock OS. I suppose that, when I get back to the states, in about year, I'll have a new machine anyway. There's really no rush to upgrade, anyway. Thanks for your input.

A:Has anyone upgraded Z70-80 to Windows 10 x64?

I have been wondering as well. I look at the drivers availability and threads but virtually nothing on this model we have. Even a post on the 81 bios when unanswered. Many of the driver for other platforms seem beta grade and buggy requiring updating. I don't want to go through that. What did you create your backup image with? I recent used the free Paragon Backup creating it to an external USB 3.0 drive but the Boot CD won't boot. I have not popup for boot selection tapping the F12 or F10 keys as previous notebooks had to select the CD as the boot device. I like you want to have everything foreseeable addressed before making the move along with a quick reverse solution.

I upgraded my processor from amd xp 2000, to amd xp 2600. And when i checked my system properties it said i was clocked at 1.25 Ghs and the 2600 is a 2.13 Ghz processor.... Then i went into bios and changed my fsb from 100 Mhz to 280 Mhz, because amd 2600+ processor is 333Mhz fsb..(my bios only gave me the option of going to 280Mhz). I thought this might make my processor clock at a higher rate, but when i rebooted i got nothing. My cd-rom, fans, and cd-roms would turn on but my monitor wouldn't.. I mean no beeps, no message screens, nothing....

So my question is how do i fix this , What did i do wrong, And how do i get back into bios?!
Is there a way of reseting bios on the mother board.

And if this helps my ram is 384 MB of 2100 ddr Memory(266Mhz Clock speed). But i dont know how that would prevent me from booting up.

Also my mother board supports up to 3200+ amd processor.

Please Help!

A:Upgraded my processor

DDR Ram is double data rate.

266 MHz rating needs a clock speed of 133.

Highly unlikely to run with 280 (=560 DDR)...
