W8 messes up another connected drive

Q: W8 messes up another connected drive

I installed W8 on a separate drive from my W7. W7 works fine. W8 appears to work fine.
HOWEVER, when both drives r connected to the system at the same time and I try to boot W8 the W7 drive gets corrupted such that the next time W7 is booted it must run CHKDSK.
I did this on both a laptop and a desktop and get the same results.

any ideas why?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Win8 hybrid boot/fast start feature does that to other partitions that are visible to it. Disable that feature in Win8 or "hide" the Win7 OS partition from Win8

I have been getting 'nag' messages from windows asking me to install SP1 almost ever since I got this laptop. The problem is, each time I try and run the installation, everything goes fine until the reboot (ie just after the 'configuring the service pack - do not switch off - 30% configured message' appears).

Then all I get is a black screen - nomatter how long I leave it. Indulging in the 'system repair' menus allows me to look at the command prompt and see what drives there are. Instead of c: (windows), D: (DVD drive), E: (data) and Q: (system) I get D:, F:, E:, C: respectively plus a new letter X: which appears to have an older version of windows and possibly some recovery stuff?

In all previous attempts, the only way out of this is to choose the system 'restore' option - which has always worked promptly - until today!

Looking around the internet, I have found a variety of suggestions and tried them nearly all. These include the following - with the results indicated:
1. Microsoft's own 'pre-update install' tools and hotfixes - no effect
2. Using 'diskpart' to assign the 'correct' drive letters when the first reboot fails - the letters fail to 'stick' and revert to the 'wrong' ones.
3. Using bootrec.exe to repair/replace/examin the MBR - no effect
4. Try 'startup/repair' at least three times - no effect
5. Microsoft support article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392 - no obvious change
6. Going via 'safe mode' - I get a 'failure configuring service pack ... Read more

I've got a new NAS (WD MyCloud 3 TB) which seems to be good connected to my LAN over a GBit Router. At least it's possible to transfer big files at maximum 105 MByte/s with the Windows copy function.
So I decided to make the NAS my backup drive (Windows 7 integrated Backup function from a SSD). Before I used a USB2-connected hard drive. The daily incremental backup took about 5 minutes  (2,5 GByte). Now when using the NAS the backup
took 43 minutes for the same amount of data.
A daily backup usually consists of 50 files, the data is collected by .zip-Files (about 200 MB each). Looking at the timestamps I see that on of these files (mostly containing 4-5 parts of outlook.pst) needs about 5 minutes to be generated and/or transferred.
What could be the reason for the slow data transfer? Is this a caching issue? What can I change?
Greetings, Halweg

A little bit of a long title, but this suddenly popped into my head and I just HAD to get an answer to this just in case. I searched around on Google, but I didn't really know what to type in or what to look for.

So, here goes. As the title suggests, I'm curious if a hard drive with an infected Windows on it could infect someone else's PC if it were connected as an external hard drive, with USB, for example. I'd assume that it's possible, but in most cases unlikely if all one would do is look at the drive's contents and possibly format it.

Did I just answer my own question? Should you still be careful, or can't it hurt as long as no files are transferred from the infected hard drive?

A:Can infected OS hard drive infect the host if connected as USB drive?

Depends what sort of infection it is.
If the infection on the hardrive (which is being connected in a way an external data storage device generally would be) is not active, and is just within some of the files then others should be safe and infection fre, and for the host machine to be infected a use would need to run one of the infected files on the HDD.
If the infection on the hard-drive has some sort of autorun system which lets it execute automatically as soon as connected to any device then the host will get infected.
It all depends on the type of infection. Best NOT to try anything like this unless you can be utterly sure the infection is of the first type and that it isn't in any of the files you might want to copy from the HDD.
You might consider plugging the HDD into a machine running a linux operating system, then copying off anything you need to (don't copy off exe, scr or dll files, assume them to all be infected), then using that machine to format the hard drive. If copying off any files you will need to scan them heavily, there are tools which can be run on a linux system to check files for infections which might become active if they were opened on a windows system.
Regarding autorun, some types of auto-rnning are still possible aren't they? In general it isn't but at present there do exist viruses which can write themselevs to USB and then infect any machine they are plugged into without the user needing to delibrately open any files on the USB. Hi,
I bought a new Dell M3800 laptop and it worked fine for three month.
One morning it refused booting. The Dell Windows Recovery CD will not load either Just goes to black screen.
I tried everything I could think of and everything I found on google with no luck.
Yesterday I removed the HD and connected it as an external drive changed the Boot options and it worked.
But it still will not boot when connected internally. The Dell diagnostic tool does not find any problems.

Please help. What could be causing this?

Up until recently I had 2x 1tb drives.. one with the install and one as storage. I connected a new 3tb, installed windows again, copied data across from old drives. it wouldn't load unless I had at least one fo the old tb drives connected too though.. if either one is connected then its fine, even if its just the drive that never had an installation on it, wtf? I tried tthe rescue option from windows 7 disc, and it detected and SAID it fixed issues, it didnt. I got a different error message though after doing that, bootmgr or something (I forget) missing. I disconeccted the other damn drives completely and did anotehr new installation on 3tb drive, you know where you are left with a windows old folder (I didnt format) still failed, it just hangs indefinitely at loading operaitng system message now, unless I reconnect either of the other drives!

I have a new Seagate Barracuda 500gb Sata2 drive. It has XP Home (SP2) installed. It boots and runs well as long as my old IDE drive is connected.
In bios, with the IDE drive connected, both drives show correctly and I can set either as boot device.
With the IDE drive disconnected the SATA2 drive doesn't show in the HDD section on the boot menu setup. However if I press F11 at start of boot I get the chance to select the SATA2 drive and can boot from this.
I had bios 2.10 and have updated to 2.30 (the latest). Bios is set for SATA2 (non Raid) with normal SATA driving. Latest SATA2 drivers installed.
Any ideas gratefully accepted.

My systems are all rather old -- running Pentium 4 CPU's in 478 pin sockets. From the time I built them, they have run Windows XP (now with SP3 installed) on IDE drives. Rock solid and stable. Two are on ABIT IS7 -- one a V2 and one an E -- motherboards and two are on ABIT IC7 G motherboards.

Recently with the dramatic price drops on SATA drives I bought two of the Western Digital black 640 GB drives planning to make them the C drives in the two machines I use most to get a boost in speed. I had no trouble installing Windows XP to the WD drive and the speed improvement as measured by HDTach is very impressive. So long as the only drive connected is the SATA drive the system(s) boot and run perfectly. I had planned to reformat the old 500 GB Seagate IDE drives that used to be C drives and use them for file storage. If I connect an IDE drive to either of the IDE connectors on the motherboard where the SATA drive is set to be the boot drive, bootup fails with an error message saying no OS was found etc. I have read the manuals carefully and can't find any information on getting SATA and IDE drives to play nice together. I had assumed there was some place in BIOS to do this -- but so far as I can tell, there isn't. There doesn't appear to be a place in the BIOS to set boot to be SATA instead of IDE, and it is clearly defaulting to the IDE drive if an IDE drive is present.

Not sure if I've asked this right...but the issue is finding the file location for my flash drive. My computer only has 3 external USB ports. I have tried all of them, when the flash drive is plugged in somewhere on my computer it should indicate another drive location. I can't find anything....not sure where to look or if I'm looking in the right place. All that shows is c: drive & E: drive. The E: drive is exclusive for the OS system restore (can't be used; not accessible for anything else). The only other is the DVD drive. Nowhere can I find evidence of the flash drive plugged into the USB.
I have all the essential drivers & everything is up to date [I have a task scheduler & Driver updater software installed. All drivers are up to date. This is a new computer, only 2 months old].

I have gone into device manager & checked all the USB & composite serial bus controllers to make sure they are powered on (my computer has an energy saving management thing & it will possibly deactivate the hubs when not in use). According to the power management settings they are not set to "sleep" but all ports are active. I can't figure out why I can't find my drive, nothing is appearing when I have the flash drive plugged in. Please advise.

A:Flash drive connected to USB hub; where is drive located?

I found one method that works. Since acquiring my computer I've not bothered with the large SSD slot on side of flatscreen all-in-one monitor. I got thinking, I have a Bell micro-sd adapter, I wondered what would occur if I slipped the chip out of my thumbdrive adapter [which connects via a USB port/hub] put it in the larger adapter & then slid that into the SSD slot on the computer. PRESTO! The system automatically recognized it & opened it as a media device under :F drive. This may be the only way I can do photo & video stuff from my micro-SD memory card from here on out. But, I still think it doesn't explain WHY I can't do it the other way by using the thumb drive adapter that plugs into the USB. The computer should open up the flash drive...or if I had my Duracell memory stick inserted, the computer should recognize something is in the USB port & open that...but it's not. So, still in need of some answers. But for the interim I've found a satisfactory alternative.

I have done a restore to yesterday on it but it didn't help.

Can I uninstall pro and not lose any info and is it easy enough for an old lady that knows little about puters to do?

Is there anyone that I can get to help me or do it for me thru remote assistant? Please help, I am handicapped and work from home online and need my puter working right for me.:

unless that guy gave you a legal xp pro cd, you have an illegal operating system on your computer. That guy need to be shot if thats the case.

Did he partition a drive to install xp pro? or was it installed on a second drive on your computer? does the nonworking application work in pro? Finally do you have a xp cd or recovery cd for home?

Basically all you need to do is to format the partition/drive that xp pro was installed on to get rid of it - start xp home, go to my computer, highlight and rightclick the drive xp pro is on, then click on format. Finally insert your xp home cd and boot to the recovery console. Once there just type fixmbr and it should take care of your dual boot screen.

While playing Battlefield 2142, my audio on the headset (Cyber Acoustics?) began to mess up

Now I have low sound even at maximum volume, and when I play music it fades in and out, making strange changes. However when I change to balance to one side it works perfectly, and if I do a speaker test it sounds fine. Earlier I listened to my speakers (Realtek) and they were fine, but later on they started to have the same effect.
I temporarily fixed both headset and speakers by rolling back my sound drivers and restarting the computer. But right now only my speakers are good. Now when I play music on my headset, it switches from bad to good quality. I'm not sure if the game had anything to do with it.

I don't know what else to call it.

It's a Canon BJC-250, I've had it 4 years, (this is the 2nd PC it's used with) and it's occasionally done this. Can't seem to pinpoint when and why.

Every now and then, usually in the middle of printing, but then for awhile after when I try and continue it, it only prints a few little meaningless symbols in the upper left corner or along the top, then rolls the paper through.

I go in to the printer (it still shows what's left of the print job, or the new one starting) and cancel it and start again, and it does it again.

Later, the printer seems to work okay again.

I was just printing 8 pages (it usually prints much more, but I don't usually print things that have too many pages) on the last page it stopped. Said there was a problem and did I want to retry or cancel? I kept retrying and pushing the reset on the printer, and it kept printing out the symbols on top.

I cancelled it and highlighted what I had left and tried to print it (selection) which was only 1/2 a page and it kept doing it. I tried copy pasting it in WordPad (instead of WORD2000 where I had it) and it did the same. (WordPad doesn't have so much, and sometimes it works better).

I saved the 8 pages in WORD and probably later will be able to print the last 1/2 page.

But, just wondered once and for all why it does this?

This is WIN 98 SE (the first PC I had with the printer was WIN 98)

now, here is the problem: after about a week, when you restart the computer, upon logon an error message pops up saying something about a missing shared dll file. click ok, it logs on fine. in the start menu, under "all programs" there is another folder called "programs", which is empty. before the problem occurred, you could mouse over this folder with no problem. after the error message, however, when you mouse over it, after the delay of them popping up, when the sub menu should show up, the computer just immediately shuts off with no warning, almost as if i unplugged it. i turned it back on, got the same error message, clicked ok, ran ccleaner registry scan and when it scanned activex and class issues, the computer would switch off, like before. i have reinstalled twice, but after the exact same amount of time, i get the same problem.

So i recently downloaded hamachi on my laptop and my desktop. At first it was working fine and there were no problems. Now the hamachi network connection combines with my network 2Wire707,disables internet access, and makes it local only. When I disable the hamachi network connection, the internet comes back on. This is an on and off thing, sometimes the wireless and hamachi will work with each other but at other times it just doesnt work at all. When it doesnt work, windows offers the solution of rebooting the router, disabling hamachi, or renewing the ip for hamachi. Rebooting works temporarily but the problem eventually occurs again, disabling isnt what im going for, and renewing the ip does absolutely nothing. My wireless connection type is WPA-Personal and my signal is strong. If theres any other information that you need just ask. Thanks!

I started with a fresh disk, and clean installed Win 8.0 when it came out. This was done with the data disk unplugged. I then switched back to the win 7 disk, rebooted, and got on with business as usual. No problems with the Win 8 installation, BTW.

A few weeks later I started playing with Win 8. I plugged in the Win 8 disk, leaving the data disk in, and rebooted to start Win 8. I allowed some updates then started the process of integrating the data files on D into Win 8. When this was complete, I shut down and switched the boot disk back to Win 7 to get some work done.

Upon restart of Win 7, chkdsk went nuts trying to "fix" the data disk. After about 200,000 errors, I finally gave up and rebuilt the disk. ARGGHHH!

It turns out I did some things wrong - NONE of which were pointed out by Microsoft - ANYWHERE. First, I did a clean install of Win 8. In and of itself this is not a problem. It only becomes a problem if Win 7 or... Read more

please excuse my grammar right now because that is the problem. for some reason i think a virus has messed with my keys and i am unable to use shift or alt.

whenever i use shift its almost like they are being clicked at the same time. for example if i hold shift the underlines will appear in file, edit notepad. i cant use capitals at all and i know the keys haven't been swapped around because i tried using alt and that does not work either.

i have also tried going into language in control panel tried changing languages, moving one from the bottom to top and i tried all that and still get the same result.

i also tried restoring to a previous date and that did not work either, but i was not able to go very far back unfortunately which is possible that this error was occuring then i just did not realize

anyway if you have any ideas please let me know, i appreciate it

thank you

Hello yall, I'm having a very annoying issue with this now. I noticed that the Ctrl+Alt+B key does something to the volume, it seems to toggle it between two states, one of which is louder and one of which is way softer (that's about as specific as I can get) which is quite annoying because I'm using this series of keys for a different purpose. I tried searching the internet but found absolutely nothing on this - any help?

After a lot of headaches I isolated the problem, both the integrated graphics card and the wlan driver stop working correctly (cant use aero and cant find/connect any wlan) after I install .net framework 4.6.2.

I tried uninstalling it and setting "OnlyUseLatestCLR" reg key to 0 or to 1 but none worked, the only solution I can come up is formatting, but while I can do it now, it might be very inconvenient in the future if I encoutner this problem again, so I would like to solve it properly. If possible having net 4.6.2 installed, but if not I could live with it.

Im using W7 SP1 x64 with the latest updates and used Driver Booster and Driver Talent to get the latest drivers. I emphasize again that they work correctly JUST until I install net 4.6.2.

Could you help me?

Thanks

Hey guys i am new to the forum!
For a couple of days I've been using a slicer icon pack for iconpackager then i decided that
i want to go back to default icons, but each time I click default windows icon pack it does not work there is still some icons still applied I have tried to reboot, clear icon cache system restore sfc /scannow still not working. So after trying all of them i decided to check if imagres.dll was the problem i opened up ResHacker and when into system32 and clicked on imagres.dll and I saw that there was Slicer Icons left instead of Windows 7 icons. So could someone could just upload there default Imagres.dll and I could replace it.
Please and Thank You! I have tried fixing for 3 days still no luck
And Here are some screen shots:

Welcome to the forums ... and nice username

Do you still have Iconpackager installed? Select the default icon theme, and uninstall it . And then see post 4 and post 5 of the thread Help! - How do i restore default icons? .

Post 5 is much easier option, IMO .

I have FF 3.0.11 and have about 25 bookmarks. It has been working fine. Tonight, I see a little "Yellow exclamation" symbol below on the bottom so I do a Microsoft update. I guess I was installing IE 8.0. But I canceled half way through the download so it never finished.

When I opened up FF, all my bookmarks were gone. They were there 5 minutes ago. I can't go back and do a restore so I just did a fresh Uninstall/Install then it showed up again.

I'm pretty PO'ed that I spent 15 minutes redoing the process again because of this update.

Is this a common occurrence?

You sure it was a MS update blackbeagle? I've never seen that description (Yellow Exclamation) of an MS auto update before.

It could have been an update for Firefox and by cancelling it before finishing you could have corrupted something.

Put the 15 minutes down to the learning curve and now you got the bookmarks back, don't fix what ain't broken!!

Hi!

I'm using a software which requires to use the {} characters regularly.
With my keyboard setting (Hungarian) I can usually type these characters by pressing AltGr + B or N. However this software has hotkeys such as Ctrl + Alt + B or N and instead of the {} getting typed it just brings up the function the hotkey would!

Are there any ways to prevent AltGr from functioning as Ctrl+Alt too?

Please help!

Thanks in advance!

I have these 2 files I can't delete.
Prev I had about 15 I couldn't delete, but finally I was able to delete those through command prompt, and restarting, etc.
These 2 files [ mkv and avi ] will NOT delete at all. Also once I try to delete you will have a screen come up that says "Identify item -- Recycling" But it doesn't work and when you do that it takes the normal look of the download//the faves etc off by making a magnifying glass on all 3 and move around in a circle like its searching.

I have tried command prompt, deleting and re-adding explorer.exe, system restore, clearing cache and restarting, right click delete, clicking the delete button, pulling it to the recycle bind. I still haven't gotten them to delete at all.

My comp is a new one about a month old its Alienware, Core i5, Windows 7, Intel. M14X.
I'm not sure how to get on safe mode in this F5 and F8 is suppose to take you to safe mode I am told, but it does not take mine to safe mode at all.

A:File Won't Delete Messes Up

As soon as you power up, just keep tapping F8. If it doesn't work, same using F5. I know you've tried this, but it should work. If still no luck try a few of the diagnostics at boot-up.

A couple of weeks ago I developed a problem on my computer at work. This all happened after the IT department switched us from Lotus Notes to Outlook for e-mail. Wordís Normal.dot file would reset itself every day so that all my macros disappeared. Iíve had to import my backup copy several times now when all my macros have vanished at startup. After the first week or two, instead of automatically erasing Normal.dot, Word started giving me a message when I start it that thereís a problem and do I want to create a new Normal.dot, to which I say No, and it all seems fine. The IT department doesnít know why this happened nor do they particularly care, which is why Iíve come here for help.

Iíve found that if I start Word first, Normal.dot works fine and there are no error messages. If I start Outlook first, when I open Word I get an error message that somethingís wrong with Normal.dot and do I want to make a new one. If I compose an e-mail in Outlook before opening Word on its own, Normal.dot is erased and all my macros disappear. Obviously, Outlook is doing something. Iíd like to make it stop. Iíve looked for settings but canít find any that seem to indicate a preference for overwriting Normal.dot. Iíve come to prefer using Word as my e-mail editor, since I can use my macros and Autocorrect, which saves time. A:outlook messes up normal.dot

The more I looked around on the net for anything relating to the problem of "Outlook corrupts normal dot" the more information I found on viruses. Have you considered that possibility?

Have you tried deleting the normal.dot you have with all your macros and then running Outlook and then trying Word? If things work correctly doing that, then look to your copy of normal.dot as the culprit rather than Outlook.

It's a place to start, anyway.

What I am trying to achieve is make MultiPlugin work so that I can skin iTunes. If there's a better way to do this, I'd be very grateful.

How fun. Earlier this week, my state experienced some severe weather which ended with a tree on our street falling and the power going out all day. It took a bit longer after that for our cable services to be restored - internet included. Ever since then, my computer in particular seems to be screwing things up for everyone else. When my computer is shut off, every other computer (one laptop, two desktops) in the house has been able to connect to the internet and maintain that connection all day. However, as soon as mine connects, the connection dies within minutes - for everyone.

I thought it could be an IP conflict but every machine in the house is set to obtain their IP automatically.

Interestingly enough, when the XBOX 360 is bridged through my computer it (the xbox) also maintains a connection, albeit a slower one.

I have spent all day trying to figure out what is going on to no avail. I have reset both the router and modem, including hard resets, and I've pinged and pinged and pinged. The same thing seems to happen regardless of whether I am using a wired or wireless connection. Here's what I have:

Computer model is HP DV6838nr.
Modem is Toshiba DAZ8821F.
Router is Linksys wrt54g v5.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.
I am using Firefox but have also tried Opera with the same results.

So my E drive hasn't been connected to I think the "mobo" or the important part of the pc for a while. Some guy came over and hooked up a new power motor because the old died. Anyways, so every time I turn on the PC, it recognizes that the E drive isn't cnonected so I have to press F2 every startup. Having almost a year passed, I just realized maybe I should do something.

Would it be worth to have Circuit City's FireDog (or whatever) come and fix it? Because if I opened up my pc, I would have little idea what to do.

Also, is this related: every time I connect something via USB or CD, a Windows Explorer pops up, saying some error with bunch of letters & numbers. Is it related?

And if I don't fix the general problem, will my PC malfunction eventually, or is it still okay?

reconnecting the driver is as simple as plugging in the correct cable, weather its IDE or SATA it all plugs in the same, if you can match shapes then your good to go, also check to see that there is a power connector running to the hard drive, (E drive) as far as your error code could you please post the code?

Hi, lately whenever my computer does an automatic update, it makes my computer act funny.  The easiest way for me to know is my frequent websites page changes and clicking on it pulls up a new tab instead of staying in the same window.

My did a computer restore and it fixed it, but now the updates are coming daily.  It used to be occasionally.  I didn't change it, but I noticed it's now set to daily updates.  Yesterday I turned it off to never do any updates.

So I kept doing a computer restore each time it happened, so I was doing it daily.  The daily updates started either June 3rd or June 4th.  The last restore I did started giving me messages that things couldn't be found (dll directory, or something like that).

I ran a eset scan, but it didn't show any viruses or infections.  This is getting worse.
Also, the last update made it so that the AntiMalware Bytes couldn't be used.

Luckily I had an older restore point and put to that so my computer is working again, but it's just a temporary solution until the automatic update thing gets resolved.

This is Windows7 and I use IE.
Please let me know if any other information is needed.

Thanks!

We use it for mostly for projecting words and sermon power points. Up until now everything has worked perfectly using a powered vga splitter to project. About a week ago i decided to try connecting through an hdmi to see the difference. It worked fine but when i tried going back to using vga it didnt even recognize it. Ever since i plugged the hdmi cable into our laptop it wont recognize vga at all. Its not a problem with a cable as I have tried other laptops and they work perfectly fine. Only thing I can think of is that plugging in the hdmi cable messed up something software wise. I would be forever grateful for your suggestions on how to fix this issue!!! I really dont have to many clues. Thanks!

Your laptop should have an fn keyboard command that will shuffle between multiple monitor setups & hopefully turn on your vga port. To find out if your laptop has this command i need your laptops complete model number, product number & serial number so i can look up the command on hp's website. to get past detecting the drive with windows 8 on them.
With my newer IDE drive in there,I got it running, but I don't
get the press delete selection to enter the bios, just the boot selection.
I have to reset the cmos to actually get to bios setup.
All the drives check out good in drive tests and scan disk and work
fine with other operating systems.Go figure.
http://netbooknetwork.net/2011/windows-8-bios-speedy-boot/

A:Well maybe this explains why windows 8 messes my bios.

My Dell E5420 doesn't respond to F2 since Windows 8, but it still responds to F12 (boot options menu), and from there I can get to the BIOS.

On the other hand, I use BootIt Bare Metal as a boot manager (as well as a partitioning tool and a launch point to Image for DOS), so dual booting is not an issue. I have my Windows 8 DVD copied to a small partition on my hard drive that I've made bootable, and I can boot to that through BootIt BM. It loads sooooo much faster than a DVD rescue disk.
