Q: modern standby fix for thinkpad X1 yoga gen3 ?

Dear Lenovo, Are there any plans to release a bios fix for modern standby for thinkpad X1 yoga gen3?(fix as in: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-6th-Gen-Battery-drain-in-sleep/m-p/...)The X1Y3 are very similar to X1C6 and there are very similar issues with power drain on X1Y3 as was with X1C6.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Today I installed a Win10 1809 on a X1Y3 and did a sleepstudy after Driver or windows updates and after parameter change or program install. It started out pretty bad, the usual. I was affected by a battery drain off 2000 mW/h during the first week after purchase, the machine was on 1803 Home. After some fiddling it seemed to get better and this is the first time I see something that good. The pc has nothing connected to its external ports and I shut off Bluetooth because of the mouse. Let windows decide what to do with  WLAN connectivity while I left WIFI on and connected to my router. There is a SDXC card and a WWAN LTE card, each in their slot. WWAN disconnected. 293mW/h, if it holds I am gonna throw a party. Don't hold my breath though. Have a feeling that Windows changed as I dont have the fast startup and hibernate, etc, options anymore in the balanced powerplan settings. You know, those that were grayed out till you clicked on specific phrase to be able to change them. This option is gone now in my 1809 Pro version. It was from before Microsoft pulled it. Ok, I closed the lid and will see what gives later on. Will come back later. Ciao.

Overnight on windows 10 pro, this laptop will drain 10% or more. I've updated the firmware, all drivers and every update with windows and lenovo vantage. The bios is set to windows power which is the modern standby setting. I've read that s3 or the 'linux power' setting should actually not drain the battery in standy, but that didnt work either, caused more issues. is this a faulty laptop? I noticed the cpu also runs very hot, I cant keep it on my lap, normal operations, light web browsing push it to 70c, and videos will go to 80, any heavier load and it hovers around 95c

Welcome to the forums.

Is fast start up turned on or off?  If on turn off that should help with the drain issue.

All the headline items are related. When the computer is in Modern Standby, it is crashing (twice in the past 24 hours). I only had access to the laptop the third time it was in Modern Standby, presumably before it would have crashed and restarted, and it was extremely hot -- fans whirring. This makes me wonder what is happening when the laptop is in Modern Standby... I've included some images from the sleep study below; and here's a link to the Dropbox folder with the two crash minidumps. Can someone help me identify what's happening? Thanks

As a new owner of an X1 Carbon 6th gen I love the hardware, really light and thin and excellent screen! However I cannot get used to the modern standby (S0i3) that this laptop uses. It no longer supports the normal (S3) standby which causes me a lot of confusion and trouble.Everytime I use the laptop to complete unattended tasks (number crunching, VM's or a backup) the screen turns off after a while (as set in the power & sleep options in Windows). But somehow the laptop also goes to sleep automatically when the screen is turned off, even though I have the sleep option under power & sleep setting to Never on AC. After some research online I found that this is a "feature" from modern standby. The laptop makes it look like it goes to sleep (the power button light is pulsing slowly) but it is actually in a low power state that is designed to make it work more like a smartphone always on device. The advantages should be that your email, music etc continue during this low power state. This is all very nice if it would work as intented, however it appears that only certain Microsoft apps support this low power state. My usual email program (EmClient) crashes everytime the laptop goes to this low power state, my backups (even Windows own) fail, my VM's stop, my number crunching apps stop etc...So basically this laptop cannot run any unattended tasks, since you have to move the mouse/keyboard every few minutes to prevent it from turning the screen off which causes the low powe... I have used Yoga Gen 1 and 2 and they were ok. Yoga Gen 3 came to me with a great disappointment after I have used it for 3 months.  First, the fingerprint reader is awful as 9 times out of 10 failed.  Either it detects my fingerprint after almost 3 seconds or it does not detect anything. Second, the LTE is awful too. When I use the LTE function and after I leave my Yoga idle for a while, the LTE function just disappears.  I have to re-start my Yoga to get the LTE function re-activated again.  Third, the power drain is astonishing.  I remember when I used Yoga Gen 1 or 2, there was virtually no power drain when it was left idle.  However, for the Gen 3, if I do not turn off the power, the bettery will be completely drained after a night's sleep.I expect the newer generation comes with improvement but disappointedly it is the contrary!!

There are reports of extreme throttling on X1 Carbon Gen6 (reviews on Lenovo reviews US page, or reddit). It seems X1C6 is limited to 23W/29W TDP, while X1 Yoga Gen 3 is limited to 44W TDP for short and long term bursts.  It makes little sense as physically X1C6 cooler looks bigger thus thould be able to handle longer/harder loads. Can we hope that it will be fixed in the nearest future? Or is there an actual reason for lowering X1C6 TDP, so people who expect 8650U to run at 44W should just look into buying X1Y3?

I'm thinking of creating a C drive image with Macrium Reflect and replacing the C drive contents on the replacement.  Back when, that might have led to problems with drivers and such, but Windows has gotten more flexible.  I've seen references to the newest installs being very free of bloatware, but I think tidied up the gen2 install  pretty well.  Am I overlooking an issue?  Thanks (And a thanks to Lenovo, particularly Andy, for the help in getting a replacement (screen banding problem).)

Contrary to this description, all USB ports remain powered during standby (S3, Suspend-to-Ram). I tried with USB ports on both sides of the device. Any ideas how to solve this problem? Regards,--RalpH

The battery on a recently purchased X1C7 drops a little under 1% per hour when in the Modern Standby state. When the hibernation timeout is disabled, the default configuration will automatically hibernate after the battery drops 5%. The system is currently configured to hibernate after 1 hour to prevent excessive power consumption when not in use, but this is not ideal.  A screenshot of the relevant section of a Sleep Study report is included below. It shows an unregistered device (_SB.PCI0.I2C0) active 100% of the time that is preventing the system from entering DRIPS. There are no unknown devices in the Device Manager and the most recent drivers are installed for everything (as far as I can tell). The BIOS was recently updated to v1.23, but this issue has been present for previous BIOS verisons as well. Any ideas how to resolve this issue?

As of November 28th, Modern Standby is completely broken on my X1Y3. It's consuming a ton of power - 3W+ continuously. The culprit is "WDF Power References for USB Root Hub (USB 3.0) (USB\ROOT_HUB30&VID8086&PID9D2F&REV0021), Driver:USBHUB3", but I can't seem to find what actual device is causing it. The Synaptics fingerprint reader and the SD card reader don't seem to be the problem at first glance. However, the root hub causes 100% active time, and so there's no way for the computer to go into a lower sleep state. This makes Modern Standby unusable. Anyone else find this issue? As a quick request, please don't use this thread to bash Modern Standby. I know its limitations, frustrations, and issues - this is certainly one of them. However, I'm more interested in finding if someone knows what driver or hardware might be causing the issue from their own experience. Thanks!

A:X1Y3 USB device breaking Modern Standby

Quick update: The culprit seems to be Windows 10 update KB4467682. I had gotten a BIOS update on November 26th, but Modern Standby worked fine. After installing KB4467682, Modern Standby has never worked again, except for maybe once, as far as the reports can show.

I experienced a feature on my friends laptop called Modern Standby.  It adds the ability to go into and resume from something called "Modern Standby".  The sleep state in older PCs was S3 but in this new model it is S0i3, which Microsoft refers to as Modern Standby and Intel calls S0 Low Power Idle - I found technical details thru research but I could not determine which new PCs have this feature. So, with this Modern Standby feature enabled, I can wake her Laptop from Sleep by saying "Hey Cortana".  This even works with her laptop lid down.I think this is a great feature but I was surprised I did not know about it, when I was doing research to purchase a new laptop this summer. How can a consumer buying from retail know which Lenovo Laptops support this capability ? Thanks,Paul Review

Hi, Looking to purchase the Aspire R5-471T.  However, want it to support Win10 Modern Standby (S0 Low Power Idle).  This is the modern variant of connected standby/instango and allows notifications to be recieved while the device is asleep and for Alarm apps to wake the laptop. Looked at one of the laptops today, and ran the command powercfg /a to check the supported sleep states.  Says that S0 low power idle is not supported by the firmware. I tested a number of current Skylake based laptops from HP and Toshiba, and appears none of them are currently supporting this sleep state. As I understand it, the hardware in this laptop should support this sleep state.  I understand that a bunch of OEMs may have disabled this mode because Windows 10 didn't support it properly.  However, Surface Pro 4 has recently had its sleep issues fixed, so assume this is now working in Windows 10. Would like to know if the R5-471T is capable of supporting this sleep mode, and if it is, is Acer is going to issue a firmware update to support the Modern Standly sleep state ?

My X1 Tablet wil no longer react to the power button, meaning I cannot press it to put the tablet to sleep. I've checked all the usual settings in win10 (power and sleep) and it's set to make my tablet sleep no matter which button is pressed. What's worse, if I put the tablet to sleep from the start button, then the power button cannot wake it up. However, if the tablet is powered off, the power button works fine, so it seems to be a software issue. I've all the various firmwares, windows 10 is up to date as of today and the BIOS settings doesn't seem to have any options for this. Has anyone else experienced this and did you find a solution?

Hi there, I just got my new Thinkpad X1 Tablet (gen3) and got some problem when using Battery Charge Threshold in the Lenovo Vantage app. I have set the Threshold to stop charging at 80% and start charging again at 75%. It works at first, for a few days I guess, and suddenly during the lunch time today, I locked the X1 Tablet (battery level 78%), going out for lunch, then I come back and the battery level is 100%. I then opened the Lenovo Vantage app to check, and Battery Charge Threshold is disabled. I have no idea completely, why this settings was messed up, I didn't open the Lenovo Vantage app and the setting was cleared. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Hopefully Lenovo reads this forum... I think it is time for them to put a good quality display of at least 120hz in their latest Thinkpads. I personally know of at least a dozen sales that would get them, if so. I realize it can be upgraded manually, but for a laptop @ this price it should have a quality IPS or OLED display at 144hz.

I have not been able to find any instructions on how to set up the yoga pen (4X80F22110) with my laptop (20C0S0UG00), and I don't know if this is because of compatibility problems or if I am not installing the right drivers. The last one I tried was the Lenovo 4X80H34887 Active Capacitive Pen Pro as it was marketed as being supported for this laptop, though doesn't seem to connect either. I had been having a problem with my laptop that makes the screen reddish for almost a year. I tried everything - creating, setting, deleting Windows color profiles, updating drivers, disabling drivers... I got a bit desperate and started disabling services and processes until I disabled the following process:...and my screen was suddenly OK. Notice how the screenshot is also reddish. This again is due to that little **bleep**. I don't know what it does but it even manages to crap all over screenshots, not just the display. After I found that this caused the trouble, I deleted all of it at this location:C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\ImController\PluginHost Now everything works fine and I can see white on my screen for the first time in a year.

Is this the right place to submit a request?  Intel shipped the 7600p drives with a firmware that uses the same NQN for every drive, 11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555. Modern versions of Linux like the certified Ubuntu 18.04 validate the drives NQN. Intel has patched their firmware to generate a random NQN for every drive.  However, you cannot flash their firmware on Lenovo supplied drives, you must use Lenovo's firmware update utility. Intel's firmware flasher will not work due to the Lenovo name on the drive. Hey everyone I am out of ideas for this issue, I've never had a computer issue that I wasn't able to fix until now and it has got me stumped. The problem is windows standby, which I make use of especially on this computer which I got for college and needs to enter standby a lot (in and out of class, library, etc) What happens is that when there is less than 25% battery remaining (which for this system is still about 2 hours) and I enter standby mode either by closing the lid or using the keyboard shortcut or start menu option, the screen turns off and then the entire system freezes. It doesn't enter standby (fan still runs, lights still on) and if I try to get it back out of standby it won't wake up regardless of what keys are pressed or actions I take. The only thing left to do is force a reset by holding the power button or waiting for Windows to crash on its own (usually about 5 mins) and then the machine shuts off.

I've updated everything, drivers, software etc. Checked every power setting I can think of in Windows and in the Thinkpad power manager, checked that there are no conflicting programs, and done a few other things. Just really out of ideas and thinking that the only option is a full clean reinstall of Windows, which I was hoping to be able to avoid. If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate your time and effort.

Thanks!
