I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I've recently got a new computer laptop with Windows 7 and the first thing I noticed that the screen is much brighter (and maybe more saturated) than my previous laptop (with Windows XP). First I thought it was my laptop, but then I saw an other computer with Windows 7, and the screen there is very bright too. I searched the net and I see that there are more people complaining about the brightness on Windows 7.
I understand that I can set the screen brightness, but it seems like a fact that the "default" brightness on Windows 7 is way brighter than on Windows XP. Some people are probably accustomed to this, but to me it's too much. I can decrease the brightness with the laptopl's controls on the keyboard, but I think that's not the way to go - I think I should look at the Windows 7 configuration. I could go to the ATI Catalyst, but is there an other way? Is the Calibration tool the only option?
And the second question, if this is a common problem, maybe there are some known settings that would take Windows 7 brightness closer to Windows XP and earlier versions?
If these are new laptops then, yes they will be brighter then older computers. But it has nothing to do with Windows. It has to do with the display themselves. A lot of the new LCDs on modern laptops are brighter quite a bit brighter then previous generations in part, moving to LEDs for the backlight.Read other 6 answers

I think that's just your video card type. If your monitor is old and this has been gradually getting worse then it could be going. You can usually adjust the brightness with your video card settings.
Right click desktop, choose properties, settings, advanced. You may have to try a few of the tabs to find the controls.

well when my laptop is plugged in it shows maxiumum brightness, but when its not plugged in it become brighter, yet brightness setting shows in the middle, for not plugged in, how can i get the plugged in brightness to equal unplugged brightness, and I have tried changing power settings.
First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.
Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.
Last tuesday I've received my new laptop / netbook: Asus X205TA. After installing everything I found out that my brightness isn't adjusting. I've tried to:
- Use all different ways to adjust brightness (charms bar, shortcut, power plan settings etc.)
- Windows update
- Update Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers (there are no updates available)
- Disable and re-enable the Display Adapter
Yet: it's not working. I've also have a problem booting up games. Even the simplest of games (as the netbook is low-spec) are either not booting up, or they show errors about not being able to access the video card or so. I wonder whether these issues have something to do with the brightness settings.
I'd appreciate any input from you guys
Well issue is that your graphics cards drivers are't installed, nor detected! So you are stuck with Basic Display Adapter Drivers

Hi there guys,
I have a problem with my dell inspiron m301z laptop,
Whenever there is something dark on my display ( this could be a picture or a website or something else) my brightness automatically adjusts to that environment. So its like the brightness is adjusting automatically depending on the virtual environment. I looked up the forum for similiar problems and tried some things with the power options and stuff but couldnt not fix it..
However this does not happen when the adapter is plugged in, everything stays equal all the time,
Thank you guys.

I recently upgraded from WIN98SE to WINXP. Before the upgrade I used to go into my Display settings to adjust the brightness on my monitor through the video card, but now through XP I cannot find that function. My video card is a Nvidia Riva TNT2 64MB card. I have a brightness adjustment in the monitor settings, but that is already adjusted at 100% and I need to adjust up a little bit more. Does that make sense? Does someone know where I can find this now that I am on XP?
Uninstall your NVidia display adapter. Run one of these to be sure all the driver files are removed: Driver Cleaner Professional or Nasty File Remover.
Then, install the most recent driver:
You'll find color, brightness, gamma adjustments in the advanced display properties and a separate adjustment for DirectX overlays, such as video player windows.

I just got the HP Pavilion 27xi IPS LED Backlit Monitor at work, working on a computer running Windows 10. I'm pretty tech-saavy, but I cannot figure out how to adjust the brightness! I've tried the F9/F10 function; doesn't work. I then thought it might be an issue with the driver, so I went to Settings -> Displays -> Advanced Display Settings -> Display Adaptor Properties -> Monitor (tab) -> Properties -> Driver (tab) -> Update Driver but got the "The best driver software for your device is already installed" message. Under the Settings -> Displays screen, there's no option for adapting the brightness and I've scoured the forums, but none of the solutions presented are working. Should I manually install an older version of the driver software? Any other potential solutions?Read other answers

Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.
What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.
I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.
Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

Hello I updated to 8.1 over the weekend and now I have two issues, that might be related:

2. My laptop will not go into sleep mode.

I had made the horrible mistake of updating my Operating System (Windows 8.0) to Windows 8.1. Anyway, as much as I'd want to change it back, I would have to back everything up and install important programs that I can't afford even if I attempt to get my old OS back.
When I had upgraded, I had to adjust a setting involving my graphics but I had forgotten how I did it and I think I had to change it due to the fact that my brightness wasn't changing. It worked for a couple of days however, I can't instaneously change it anymore. It would show I'm adjusting it (by showing the moving bar at the corner of my screen) but it doesn't apply the adjustment at all. Furthermore, I use my touchpad to scroll (with two fingers) - again, it worked for a few days after I upgraded however I can't use it anymore. Now, I have to manually use the arrows on the side of my screen to scroll or use my keyboard. Please help me, I really want to just get comfortable with this stupid OS.
So I noticed that everytime Windows 7 loads and I'm using my battery then plug into my AC adapter the brightness won't get brighter, I have to manually go into power options and drag the little indicator bar. I want it when on the AC adapter to have a full bright screen and when on the battery 50%. Well Windows 7 doesn't want to seem to remember that because after every boot both the battery and ac adapter will have brightness settings at 50%.
This is a Windows 7 problem and I was wondering if anyone has a solution. Thanks

After the chipset driver is installed and the machine rebooted, next install the Lenovo Energy Management application. Part of the function of that utility is to allow the use of Hot Keys for adjusting screen brightness which may resolve your issue. Here is that download....
Hello! I have a Lenovo L450 laptop with Windows 10 (upgraded from Windows 7 a few months back). Since upgrading to Windows 10, I keep on having the same problem with the display brightness. Every time the display shows a dark image, video (or similar), the display dims a lot and I am not able to increase it with the function keys. For example: when watching a rather dark YouTube video in full sceen, the display dims A LOT and I can not increase the brightnes with the function keys. As soon as I exit full screen, the display VERY SLOWLY returns to normal brightness and now the function keys work again. After exiting full screen the display is still so dim that, when you press the DECREASE BRIGHTNESS funcion key, it INCREASES its brightnss. See photo attached. I just updated to Windows 7 64 bit from Vista this morning, now I'm having issues using it. The main problem is that my graphics card "disappeared". I looked in Device Manager and nothing is there (it was replaced with Standard VGA Graphics Adapter), I went to Nvidia to download a new driver, but when it was installing the error said it could not find the hardware. I'm on a HP dv9000 laptop with a Nvidia GeForce Go 7600.
did you go to hp and do a search for your specific laptop and see if win7 drivers were available?
In addition to help,we need the exact model of your laptop. dv9000 is just the series. check the bottom of the laptop for a sticker with the serial number on it. Your exact model should be on it. Possibly in the bottom right of the sticker (thats where mine is)
depending how you installed, there may be a folder called windows.old, if so, start installing your driver, browse manually to c:/windows.old/Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository and select. Hopefully your vista driver will work.

Hi, I observed a problem on my new pc with windows 7.
When I try to adjust the screen brightness, the adjustment slider is always in minimum in Control panel>Hardware and Sound>Power Option, as shown in this picture
but once I go to the "Edit Plan Settings", the slider is in maximum position, as shown in this picture
I can adjust the brightness under the "Edit Plan Settings" but not in the "Power option". Something must be wrong here, does anyone know how to fix this? Many thanks!
Hmmm... That slider doesn't even show on my PC until I edit plan settings.
Is this a laptop? Is your screen dark?
If you can't adjust the slider on the Power Option window it likely isn't doing anything anyway. It might not be anything to worry about if your screen is operating normally. I know of no fix for it, but others might.
ok, i changed from Vista ultimate SP2 to WinXP SP3, to speed up games/fix a couple bugs in various programs, and basically i installed XP and downloaded/installed all the latest drivers for everything, but the audio quality sucks! its so grainy and sometimes in say cod5 i only hear the guns but not the zombies but then when i stop i hear the zombies and my footsteps then my footsteps go away and i hear this staticy/grainy/jumpy sound, which i assume was the music before the quality was destroyed. i have tryed 2 differnt headsets and a set of speakers, all have the exact same problem so its not the headsets, i have installed latest drivers but it didnt effect anything >_>
1) music sounds perfectly fine so im assuming it may have something to do with settings within the games or something.
2) i have had XP before vista with the same hardware and the audio was fine so its not the soundcard.
3) sound worked fine in vista too.

I have been experiencing an intermittent problem with my monitor auto adjusting with increased frequency since this morning.
It is a 22 inch Belinea TFT.
What I have done :
Tried running at a lower res. - didn't help.
Went into Safe Mode - same.
In Device Manager I deleted one entry under Display Adapter for secondary X800 just leaving Primary Adapter.
Found the CD with original drivers and followed the instructions on reinstalling from a specified location ( hopefully the .inf) - it took a second or so.
So far ( few mins. or so ) it hasn't happened again.
I'd like to know where I might look to check it has been successfully applied so if need be I can try again.
Also - if there is anyway of disabling the auto adjust feature - since I could not find a way of doing so using the Monitor's OSD .... and this problem doesn't even appear in the accompanying manual under troubleshooting.
Furthermore Googling turned up very little.
Any suggestions appreciated.
* Edit * It has just occured again, so obviously unsuccessful.
Here are the instructions from the CD :
To install a BELINEA monitor for Windows XP with the BELINEA.INF file, please
proceed as follows:
1. Click "START"->"CONTROL PANEL"
2. Now, click on "DISPLAY" icon, then "SETTINGS"->"ADVANCED"->"MONITOR"->"PROPERTIES"->"DRIVER"->"DRIVER UPDATE".
3. Choose "Install from a list or specific location ( advanced )", than click "NEXT" button.
4. Choose the "Donīt Search. I will choose the driver to install" button and click "NEXT".
5. Click the "HAVE DISK" button and than the "BROWSE" button.
6. Choose the appropiate drive and directory in which you put the Belinea_xxx.inf, than click "OPEN" and "OK".
This ( part 7 ) does not appear - I get a dialog box stating ' The specified location does not contain information about your hardware.'
I have tried using the inf on the disc and from the desktop.
7. A list with all supported Belinea monitors will appear. Select your monitor type and double click "NEXT".
8. Click "FINISH" button and than the "CLOSE" button. Now the inf file for your monitor is installed.

Is this merely the laptop quality?

Try disabling the Windows audio enhancements. I haven't used Windows 8, but the steps are probably similar to the steps needed to disable enhancements in Windows 7:
Right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area (system tray in earlier versions of Windows) and click on "Playback devices."
Double-click on your default audio device in the window that appears.
Click on the Enhancements tab and check the "Disable all enhancements" box. The actual enhancements might not appear to be enabled (their check boxes will be unchecked), but they are all enabled anyway.
I had the same problem, and that fixed it. It also improved sound quality. It also disabled the audio enhancements and equalizer included with the audio driver on my computer. If disabling enhancements prevents audio effects in games from working properly, you will have to enable the enhancements again and live with it. However, I doubt that Creative or Realtek are dumb enough to disable anything besides basic 2-channel audio when the enhancements are disabled like Conexant does.
Also, why do you have drivers for two different audio devices installed? If you have a Sound Blaster card, you won't be using the Realtek onboard audio.
