Preferred Solution: I need a Bitlocker Recovery Key

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome.Pelase go through BitLocker recovery keys: Frequently asked questionsIf you're locked out of your PC, you'll need a BitLocker recovery key to sign back in.Why am I locked out? There are several reasons that might make a PC go into recovery mode. For example, your organization might have a password security policy that locks you out after a certain number of failed attempts to sign in. Or perhaps your PC encountered a hardware malfunction, an unexpected configuration change, or another security event. Requiring a recovery key helps ensure that only an authorized person can unlock your PC and restore access to your encrypted data. How can I get my BitLocker recovery key?Depending on how your PC is set up, there are different ways to get your recovery key.If your PC is connected to a domainContact your administrator to get your recovery key.If your PC isn?t connected to a domainThere are several locations in which your BitLocker recovery key might have been saved. Here are some places to check:Your Microsoft account online. This option is only available on non-domain-joined PCs. To get your recovery key, go to BitLocker Recovery Keys.A saved copy of the recovery key. You might have saved a copy of the BitLocker recovery key to a file, a USB flash drive, or printed a hard copy.If you saved the key to a file or printed it, find your copy, follow the instructions on your locked PC, and enter your key when prompted. If you saved the key to a USB flash drive, insert the USB flash drive and follow the instructions on your PC. (If you saved the recovery key as a file on the USB flash drive, you?ll need to open the file and manually enter the recovery key.)What if I have problems with my Microsoft account? If you're having problems with your Microsoft account, here are a few tips.I have a Microsoft account, but I can?t sign inGo to the Reset your password page to resolve problems with your account.I?m signed in with my Microsoft account, but I don?t see my recovery keyThe recovery key might not have been saved to your Microsoft account online. In this case, look for any copies of the recovery key you might have printed or saved to a file.If you accidentally deleted the recovery key from your Microsoft account online and want to save it again, you need to force Windows to back up the recovery key automatically. The only way to do this is to switch to a local account, and then switch back to a Microsoft account.Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)Tap or click Users, tap or click Switch to a local account, and follow the instructions.Repeat step 1, tap or click Users, tap or click Switch to a Microsoft account, and follow the instructions.I don?t have a key. What else can I do?Unfortunately, if you can?t find your key, and no other administrator on the PC can find a backup copy either, you?ll need to restore the PC to factory default settings. Only choose this option as a last resort because it will delete your personal data from the PC. While it helps protect your data against unauthorized access, it also prevents you from ever accessing your data again.Depending on your Windows configuration, you might be able to restore your PC to its factory default settings directly from the Windows recovery screen.I see a link at the bottom of the recovery screenTap or click the Learn more about resetting your PC to factory defaults link, and then follow the instructions. In some Windows configurations, you might need to start the recovery process using a button instead.I see buttons at the bottom of the recovery screenTap or click the Learn more about resetting your PC button, and then follow the instructions. In other Windows configurations, you might have the option of skipping over certain drives without unlocking them.I see an option to skip a driveTap or click the Skip this drive link at the bottom of the BitLocker Drive Encryption screen to continue without unlocking the current drive. If you skip all of the BitLocker-encrypted drives, you?ll see a list of advanced repair and startup options to choose from.Tap or click Repair and Restore, tap or click Other repair options, and then tap or click Factory Reset and follow the instructions. For More information .Please go through URL below http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/bitlocker-recovery-keys-faq#hpexpertday Regards;DebashishI am an HP employeePlease click the White Kudos star to say thanks for helping. Please mark Accept As Solution if my help has solved your problem.

After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

A:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?
Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.
I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

A:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

A:Bitlocker recovery key

Hello @pcsl, Welcome back to the HP Support forum. Thank you for your post. BitLocker is a Microsoft software designed to protect your PC against offline attacks, unauthorized access typically if your PC gets stolen. BitLocker is full disk encryption software. More info:>> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker>> http://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-bitlocker-encryption-windows-10 BitLocker was activated by someone and during the activation time it prompts the user to save/store the key in a safe place. If this is company owned asset/PC, you should turn to your company's IT support guys and they should be able to provide you with the recovery key. If this is your own device, most probably you use a slightly different BitLocker version for certain PCs and tablets known as Device encryption. Probably your key is stored in Microsoft OneDrive with your Microsoft account here :>> https://onedrive.live.com/recoverykey More info>> https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/12/microsoft-may-have-your-encryption-key-heres-...>> http://windowsitpro.com/microsoft-surface/locating-your-microsoft-surface-bitlocker-recovery-key>> http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21433-bitlocker-recovery-unlock-drive-windows-8-a.html Please, note that it is very important for security reasons that you keep the encryption key (Bitlocker key) in a secure place so that only you know it. Let me know if this works for you ... BitLocker can not be inadvertently turned on. Someone who has access to your notebook has encrypted the drive with Bitlocker technology. Unless you have the password, you do have a severe problem. Unencrypting the hard disk will be very expensive, that is, if it can be done.http://www.lostpassword.com/hdd-decryption.htm  There are companies that claim to be able to do it, but there is unlikely to be a guarantee that it will work. https://www.google.nl/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=how+to+remove+bitlocker+...

I have a new Windows 8.1 machine and I wish to encrypt the drive using Bitlocker. It gives me 4 options to save a recovery key
1. Save to your Microsoft account
2. Save to a USB flash drive
3. Save to a file
4. Print the recovery key

Option 1 isn't available as I'm logged on using a local account.
i. What is the difference between options 2 & 3? i.e. I could save to a file on a USB drive
ii. Does option 2 mean the USB flash drive cannot then be used for other purposes?
iii. Does option 2 also mean I could use a USB external hard drive, or does it have to be a flash drive?
iv. Once the recovery key has been created, can the key then be copied to other locations or is it only going to work where Bitlocker puts the key?
v. Just thinking about printing the recovery key - can this be used without a password to access the drive, how sensitive/important is the printed key?

N00b questions, I'd very much appreciate your answers.

A:Bitlocker recovery key

hello and welcome to eight forms , my opinion , difference between 2 and 3 ,2 will create a file and put it on the flash drive for yah,3 you will have to move the file it creates to a flash drive of external drive manually 'I would think you could take the file it create and put it where ever you want , I don't use bitlocker ,if I did I would print it and put away for safe keeping ,like I try to do will all passwords .and if the drive is pass worded that you store the file on ,then yes someone would need the drive password to access the files on that drive, is not that what passwords are for ,I would assume that there are people who could hack your passwords like they do others ,good luck

A:BitLocker recovery key not working

Welcome to Seven Forums.

I don't know anything about the BitLocker which is I understand is bundled with Enterprise and Ultimate Editions. Still I was watching this thread to read about this issue as it developed. As there has been no development for 19 hours on this thread, I now feel that there is no solution for retrieving the system.

You may wait a day or two more to see if some suggestions come up but the only way out now seems to be to clean reinstall Windows 7 all over again. I hope you would not lose too much data. I don't think that the locked up files shall be visible with Ubuntu and Hiren's DVDs.

A:Have Bitlocker Recovery ID, need to find Key

Could you please explain a bit for the Recovery ID of the BitLocker? Do you mean the first 8 characters of the password? And are we in a domain environment?

If we are in a domain environment, we could use
Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Recovery Password Viewer to find the recovery password through AD server. Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption Recovery Password Viewer is an optional feature that's included with the Remote Server Administration Toolkit
(RSAT), which you can install by using the Add Roles and Features
option in the Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 Server Manager or from the
Programs and Features option in Control Panel.
And if we are in a workgroup, and the recovery key is missing, please take a look at the below article for all the possible BitLocker recovery methods:

Hey Guys,
Im new here so apologies if this in the wrong section.
Basically, massive problem here - I have a WD MyBook External HDD and have used BitLocker to Go on it from Windows 7 RC, and I kept the recovery key in my main HD Documents folder. (This was a x86 install).
Last night I (stupidly) backed up the key to the External HDD automatically forgetting it would be locked later (as it unlocks on startup so I forget it would be secured elsewhere) and went ahead to clean format my PC to a Windows 7 x64 RTM Install.

Now, when I come to plug in the drive today, instead of prompting for a password as it SHOULD, I instead am askked for the recovery key which I stupidly enclosed in the External HD itself.

Naturally, this External Drive contains my life, several GB of music, all of my college work, images, videos and so forth and I cannot really do with losing it all.

The only other information I can give is that at no point was the HD fully encrypted by BLocker, instead I used to cancel it at each start up and it never passed 3.5% so does this mean not ALL of the data is encrypted and maybe the key I copied into there last night may still be safe (no BL encryption went on after copying it?)

If so, how would I go about possibly finding this? Is there any other way to access the drive without getting the BLocker popup? I already tried a Live boot disk, cmd prompt etc?

Thank you.

So I was playing with BIOS settings for reformatting my laptop and reinstalling Windows using bootable USB drive. I didn't succeed and I probably did something stupid. Now I'm not able to login into my laptop. It's asking me for bitlocker recovery key on both disabled and enabled settings of secure boot.

On "Enabled" setting, it says "Bitlocker needs your recovery key to unlock your drive because Secure Boot policy has unexpectedly changed."

On "Disabled" setting, it says "Bitlocker needs your recovery key to unlock your drive because Secure Boot has been disabled. Either Secure Boot must be re-enabled, or Bitlocker must be suspended for Windows to start normally."

I don't have a recovery key. I don't remember setting one. I even searched for it in my Microsoft account. My device (ASUS X205TA) is listed but the recovery key is not.

Note that I don't have any useful data in the laptop, so I'd be fine with reinstalling windows even if I loose all the data. I just want to be able to use my laptop again.

I have implemented BitLocker To Go at our company through GPO and recovery keys are backed up into AD DS to the computer object. I am now looking for a way to migrate these recovery keys to an other computer object as we are currently refreshing our workstations.
I have been trying to write a PowerShell script to backup the recovery key into AD when the removable drive is connected and unlocked on the new computer. You can retrieve the ID of the removable drive by the below cmdlet.
manage-bde -protectors F: -get
I am then trying to backup the recovery key using the below cmdlet.
manage-bde -protectors -adbackup F: -id {<id>}
This returns an error.
ERROR: Parameter "-ID" requires an argument.

Any ideas? Does this cmdlet only work for internal disks? Is there a better approach to migrate recovery keys to a new computer?

my recovery key was lost and how to unlock the bitlocker?

Hello everyone,
I am experiencing some issues with my external hard drive. I've decided to encrypt it using bitlocker. We're talking about a 2TB hard drive. The process started..it requested for a password and i have been provided with a recovery key. At around 90% the
process blocked/stoped. It started to affect my PC performace.
Suddenly, there was no longer a progress bar so that i could see how much i had to wait. I've been requested to provide directly my recovery key( not the password) so that i could unlock the drive . I kindda panicked..and reinstalled the OS.
The sad part, altough i have the original message that i got from the drive when i started to encrypt it with the full recovery key, it says its incorrect.
I've performed several test using CMD and all the avaiable commands i could find on the internet, but with no luck.
Have you managed to to get by from such a scenario?
