I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Not really. The ADSL router doesn't have the correct WAN interface. You need a standard router with an Ethernet WAN connection.

Hello

I am having a strange problem connecting Wireless ADSL2+ modem to an 8-port D-Link DES1008D switch. If I connect the Wireless ADSL2+ modem to my 8-port switch with a short 1-meter long CAT5 cable, then it works well without any problem. No losses shown on ping (no losses even with 65500 packets, using ping l 65500 command). But if I use a long CAT5 cable of around 12 meters, then it does not connect at all. Light on the 8-port switch is not stable and it keeps on blinking and ping just totally fails. I tried changing cable too using CAT6 (assuming that first CAT5 cable may be defective) and then I even used another 8-port switch (one of same D-Link model and one other of Intex make) but no difference, same error. I also tried 4 different ADSL2+ modems (2 wired and 2 wireless) but same error on all of them.

Now strangely, if I connect the same Wireless ADSL2+ modem directly to my computer without any switch in-between using same cable, then it works. I even joined both the cables to make it a total of around 25-meter length, then also it worked without any losses. Means without switch, no length issues while connecting Wireless ADSL2+ modems to PC.

I tried using straight and crossover cables but same results. Switch is unmanaged so it is supposed to handle both types of cables but still I tried just to be sure.

Now one more thing, I replaced 8-port D-Link DES1008D switch with a 16-port D-Link DGS1016D switch, then it worked. So it means, that 8-port switches cannot... Read more

The only thing that comes to mind is some fault in the specific switches you're using. Are these cables you fabricated, or commercial cables? I'd make SURE they're wired correctly.

Hi All,
I have Laptop Toshiba Satellite L775, windows 7. I used cable modem Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 and it was working fine. Then I changed my ISP to Century Link and used their DSL modem and still everything worked just fine. Now I moved to another city and used same cable modem (SBG6580) and connected my business PC thru ethernet and it is working fine. The problem is with my laptop which I tried to connect wirelessly but coudn't so I tried to connect it thru ethernet but it does not even recognizes it. Funny thing is my hard wired computer has picked up same network name thru modem and is working fine both thru ethernet and wifi (this computer I am using first time with this modem).
My laptop find available networks and when I select my network with password, some time it says connected with limited access and some time "windows was unable to connect" message. I tried most of the solutions by calling Suddenlink and Motorola but no luck. I am wordering if it has to do anything with centurylink's DSL modem being used on this laptop before and somehow blocking cable modem?
Any help?

I still have DSL broadband router that Verizon provided (Westell Versalink 327w). This has DSL connector for in and regular 4 Ethernet connector.
Is it possible to connect this router to cable modem and use it as normal router? If possible is it very difficult to seup?

A:Can I connect Cable modem to DSL router?

no. DSL and cable internet are two very different technologies. You'll need a standard router that you can use with any type of ISP. Then all you need is a cable modem or a DSL modem depending upon the type of service you have.

Alright. Right now I'm getting my internet from a Cable Modem. The Cable Modem has only 1 ethernet cable slot (where it connects to my computer). The problem is, I want to have another ethernet cable slot avaliable so I may play XBox Live without disconnecting the computer.

I have a DSL Router here, WITHOUT the cable thing (the metal part that sticks out in order to screw the cable to). I also have 2 ethernet cables. How do I go about configuring this mess?

So I have AT&T DSL. I bought a Netgear N300 ADSL2+ Modem/WiFi Router that is compatible with my service.

Previously with this Modem/Router it would constantly drop the wireless connection for the Wii I have that was used to stream Netflix.

So recently I bought a Linksys E2500 Router so I could be able to use the Wii, along with 3 other desktops, 1 laptop, and 3 phones.

My ideal setup would be this:
Set the ADSL2+ Modem/Router to be just a modem (I know how to set the option for this)Connect the Linksys Router to be what all the devices connect to wirelessly (this would serve as the DHCP server)
I have read that one of the Routers has to be set to "BRIDGED" mode, yet I don't know which device has to be Bridged

I recently bought a TP Link TD-W8980. I set it up and it was brilliant. Duel band, very fast and reliable. Then one day I couldn't connect to the internet. I rang my ISP who went through all the settings with me and they told me it must be the router. I rang TP link helpline, they got me to reset everything go through settings again and told me it must be the ISP. I called them, they told me I am getting connection and try the old router they provided and it worked and still does, so I presumed the router was broken. I sent it back, got a refund and ordered the same router from a different company as it was now cheaper, so I know it's not the same router returned to me, but it still won't work. I attached a few screen shots from the diagnostic report and other information if anyone knows what they mean. If anyone has any ideas what could be wrong I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

I saw some ADSL modems which also ran your network (access point/router etc) which worked while your computer is off, but I can't find them now.

The advantage is power-saving on the main PC while the others in the network can access the broadband anytime they want.

Does anyone know of any good hardware available in the UK?

A:Looking for ADSL2 modem/access point/router which works while PC is off

All those modems "work" even without a connected PC..

If you want to share an internet connection to several computers, then you need a router. As I gather, at the moment it is one of your PCs that is acting as a router.

If your current modem has an ethernet port, then it will work with any router that has an ethernet WAN option. If you currently have a modem with only USB, then you have to replace it.

Hello all,

I have bought this router about 3 months ago and had it working perfectly. Untill one day through the last week it started to act really wierd, the router keeps on disconnecting every once and a while; for example sometimes it works continuously for 3 to 4 hours then suddenly disconnects by powering off the router then reconnecting by powering on !. However sometimes it works for 5-15 minutes then it disconnects and reconnects again . I have watched the router's power go off for a second then power on normally after that it reconnects.

I have called the ISP and they told me that the line which the internet comes through is working fine, from that one can conclude that the problem is from the router. However what the problem is I dont know

If anyone have faced or even knows how to fix this problem please reply...

Thanks in advance,

Hi guys I'm new here so please be nice

OK! so before i changed to TPG ADSL2+ i used to be on optus cable using a Netgear Wireless N router. then when i got TPG, i need a router but found out i had to get a combo modem/router. so i got an Open Networks 824RLW which has wireless G.

This unfortunately in my double brick double story house isn't good enough for some pc's. So i know there is a way to do it but i dont know what it is... I'd like to disable the wireless (G) of the Open Networks and keep the modem of it working (and possibly the ethernet ports) and connect my Netgear Wireless N router and use it for wireless (N) and wired networking.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks, Assassin.

A:Wireless N Router + ADSL2 Modem/Router

Welcome to Seven Forums!

You can certainly do what you describe. It will come down to reconfiguring the two routers.

First, reconfigure the ADSL router (824RLW) to turn off the wireless. I looked at the manual and you can disable the WLAN.

Next, on the old "N" router, disable the DHCP server. This will prevent it from handing out addresses. Also give the NetGear router's LAN port a static IP address on the same subnet as the 824RLW. make it's outside the DHCP range though.

This last piece is important. Connect a cable from one of the four LAN ports on the 824RLW to one of the LAN ports on the old "N" router. NOT the WAN port! The routers have two sides, WAN (Internet) and LAN (Inside). The radio and the switch ports are on the same side (LAN). That's the side you want.

By doing this you bypass the Netgear's router function completely.

The "nokia siemens SL2_141" is a modem/wireless router combo; I assume that "A Wireless Modem of MTS" is also a modem/wireless router combo.

If my assumption is correct you can use the Nokia as an ethernet switch and wireless access point ...

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If ther... Read more

Clueless one here.

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 4000 Laptop through an old workplace several years ago and want to connect it to the internet using a 3COM FE575C-3COM 10/100 PCMCIA card with a dongle. The laptop is still set up to connect through a VPN that no longer exits (old workplace went under). and I'm not sure if that's hindering things. That'd be great to erase all settings for that if someone wanted to walk me through it, but that's not the main reason I need help. I am the "admin" and have the "admin" password on the laptop.

First off, the laptop can see the hardware (ethernet card) when I insert it, but the connection is NOT showing up on my Netgear router that is connected to my Comcast Cable Modem (which is currently working on my MAC and how I'm typing here). When I go to set up internet connection on my laptop, I'm pretty clueless as to what to do (obviously not dial-up). I've created about 2 new VPN's, but nothing works. I don't have wireless, but I did have a wireless card that was able to get me onto the internet a few times (presumably mooching bandwidth which I don't want to do), so I know it can work or at least should work with a correct card set-up. I don't know if the hardware I bought is bad, the internet connection is just not set up correctly and/or why my router is not even seeing my second computer.

HELP!

Hi, I have a strange question that im hoping can work (for a fortnight at the most lol)

I have just joined Virgin Media on 20meg connection. They sent me out an Ambit E08C013.00 modem but forgot to send out the router. Then the engineer installs the wallbracket lobsided! But anyway, im getting away from my question.

I have to wait up to 2 weeks for my router and in the meantime, my computer is upstairs and my connection is downstairs! I dont want to buy a router that will last me 2 weeks, so I decided to dig out my old BT Voyager 2091 router. I connected it to my Netgear FS208 v2 ethernet network switch and now I am trying to get it to broadcast my BB signal from my Ambit modem (which is also connected to my Netgear switch)

I can now connect to my wireless router, but it will not broadcast my broadband.

Is there a way to fix this? Or do I have to wait till my new router arrives?

I have succesfully been on the internet for a while now with a cable modem surfboard 4200 connected to a router smc 7004br connected to 2 pc's. the thing is that I had to manually input everything into my tcp/ip settings in the network panel for it all to work.

After reading umteen million times that all I had to do was to hook up the router to my nic cards and all would work (which it didn't ) I was just wondering how to go about just setting the tcp/ip settings to obtain an ip address automatically.

by the way when I do set it up that way I lose all connection to the internet.

can someone who has a 7004 br and win 98 1st edition tell me how to do so, also my internet provider is comcast...

thanks in advance

Alright...so I will start off by stating that I hate my apartment and how the cable is wired in the place. I have one line going into the apartment. It is in the living room. In order to get too any other point in the house I have too run cable lines around rooms and hook up too connections in wall that pass through the wall into the next room. I currently have my computer located in the dining room/kitchen area as I have a huge area and a small table. Too get too my computer with cable line it takes 3 connections to hook up too my modem (modem is last hook up). I would like to move computer too too bedroom, but too do so would take 6 different connections. Would I be losing "connectivity/bandwidth" by having 6 different connections or would it be better to get and hook a router up in living room and run a network line too the computer and cutting out those connections??? I would like to get the most out of my internet connection if you feel me.

Basic question? Will I get better connection using router over 6 connections??? Not sure about data/packet lose in the connections.

I have a cable modem at home and would like to use it for 3 computers on a small network. I know the cable company is not real keen on this (they said "no" - you have to pay more for each computer).

So i ordered a router. My question is, once i set up the router, will the cable company even know what I have done?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Appreciate some assistance.

Have a PC running W-Millenium. Going to format the hard drive (too many programs installed, virus problems, spyware, etc.) and reinstall the OS.

The current PC uses a cable ISP (Charter.net), and is connected to a router and a cable modem.

After installing the OS to a clean Hard Drive, installing drivers for video, sound card, etc., and some programs, the PC needs to be connected back to the router and the cable modem to establish an Internet connection.

Might be a super dumb question, but, which software should be installed first, that of the router, that of the cable modem, or does it matter?

Any guidance somewhere that shows the steps needed to connect the PC to both a router and a cable modem?

Okay, so this is basically my setup.

I'm using roadrunner's sb5101 cable modem...connecting this modem to a netgear hub with 4 ports.....

1 port receives the connection from the cable modem
1 port connects to my computer
1 port connects to my 360
1 port connects to my dlink router

here's my problem: all the connections work fine except for the dlink router; it doesn't seem to connect to the internet.

When I check the status tab, it says "dhcp client disconnected". I try the release IP and it says it was successful, but nothing happens. I try the renew ip and it says renew ip fail (obviously since it doens't have an ip).

So my question is, is it a crappy router? Am I missing something here?

I tried resetting the router to factory defaults by pressing the hard reset button in the back, and it sitll didn't connect.

Someone please help.

Oh, the reason i'm not connecting the modem to the router is beacuse the stupid router doesn't give me a static ip, so i'm banned from several sites and I need a static ip.

Could anyone please give me a list of cable modems that offer routing capabilities, such as NAT and DHCP? My current cable modem is a RCA DCM425.

I am gonna get my internet upgraded to ADSL2+ in a couple of months (courtesy of my ISP) and I'm in the market for a good router. I don't mind forking out more money for a good one, so blast me with something I really can do with.

I got 3 switches at home at the moment, so I don't really need it to be a switch. One of them is a wireless switch as well, and I'm not a fan of wireless in the first place, so its optional.

I've got tons of Cat6 cable, and I actually do transfer gigabytes of stuff all over the network often, so a gigabit switch built in will be nice. But internet speed is the main concern, I can always buy a seperate gigabit switch.

I don't know anything about connecting to the internet (read my last thread in this forum ) so I don't know how to even start shopping for a good router. Some tips will be nice.

I know how to read manuals, and some basics on setting up, so don't worry about me not being able to work the software. Friends online and offline help as well

But first, I've got a question: Are there any routers/switches with RAM? Given that I've got quite a few computers on the network, I think I've got plenty of data going all over, so will RAM will probably help with the speed and such?

Thanks for any advice.

A:Need an ADSL2 Modem

First.. Did your ISP just upgrade their network or do they actually give you ADSL2 speed? Usually customers get connection speeds way less than the network's capabilities.

Second.. As I have said before, a plain 100Mbit ethernet is several times faster than any DSL connection. No matter what you do with your LAN, your internet speeds will not improve.

Yes, all switches and routers have RAM in them.

If so, how can I configure any settings on the router? I tried connecting this router directly to my Cable modem and some limited connectivity problem pops up saying Primary DNS server cannot be found.

A:Can my unserviced DSL router be used as a router to my Motorola cable modem?

probably not, apples/oranges.

dsl uses phone lines which means you have/had dsl with your phone service.

cable uses coax cable to the modem and tv in my case with roadrunner, also provides digital phone service.

the cable comes in and i use a splitter for the modem/with phone jack for digital phone service and to the router/computers, both wired and wireless.

My wife's sister has Comcast Cable. They installed a Modem/Router that the wireless part seems to have died. Can a wireless router be connected via ethernet cable to the cable modem/ router?

A:Connecting Wireless router to Cable Modem/Router

Yes, adding a wifi router to one of the ports will set it as a node on the dhcp server{modem} and if there is a conflict in ip address, usually will change it to a 10.0.0.1

Hi,

I am a bit new at this.

My boyfriend's computer is using Comcast which is a cable connection. He is running Win XP and he has a network card in his PC.

My PC is running Win 98 SE, and I have always used a dial up and there isn't a network card.

I would like to be able to have both PC use one cable connection, but I am not sure what I need to do it.

I went to BestBuy and they were no help. I was told to purchase a Linksys Wireless - B Broadband Router, but it seems like I might need a network card, if want to have it hard wired to my PC. Or I might need a Wireless - B PCI adapter. Is this right?????

I want to do this as cheap as possible. What do I need to do this? Or is there some other easier way to connect my PC using the same internet connection.

I don't know if this is important or not, but we don't have to have our computers networked to share the same printer, it it will make things easier.

Thanks for any help!

I will be getting a new computer this week, and I currently have a cable internet connection. This computer will be going one floor down, to the basement. We would like to have both pcs hooked to the same cable connection. Do I just run them through a splitter, or is there some other way I will need to do this? I have read about "hubs" & "routers", but am not too technical regarding these things. It is not necessary for us to have the two pcs "networked"...one is for the kids. Any easy answers?

A:can't connect using cable modem

Hi suomi64,
Welcome to the forums.
I would bypass the router and plug a Ethernet cable from the charter cable modem directly to the laptop and see what happens. If it works then try a different port on your router.
