Reoccurring connection attempt and weird activity

Q: Reoccurring connection attempt and weird activity

So I keep getting this thing that's trying to download something on my computer. There are multiple instances of mshta.exe that show up on task manager, and after having a look with Process Explorer, the same url that's trying to connect to my computer is in the command line of these mshta.exe's. Also, when using Mozilla Firefox, it can't connect to sites like this and won't even open. I also get random tabs opening in Firefox.
Any help?

Note: I don't regularly use IE6, I used it this time because Mozilla wasn't working.

Preferred Solution: Reoccurring connection attempt and weird activity

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Reoccurring connection attempt and weird activity

Also, the url is hxxp://www.funnypinguinshow.com/sdad.php?kxasdasddkhjk= and after updated definitions and scans with SAS, MBAM, and NOD32, it still couldn't find the problem.

Must be that time of the year again, as my PC is acting weird. Not sure if it is the full moon or did something creep into my system. My PC is slower than normal and has rebooted itself several times.

I am using XP Pro and McAfee Total Protection which is up to date. I did a scan using McAfee and it comes back clean. I rebooted into safe mode with networking and ran a Panda Online scan. First time it restarted in the middle of the scan. The second time it said it found stuff, but it was mostly tracking cookies.

I am attaching a HJT log and the Panda results. Suggestions?

Ok, my 1st time here, seemed like a good place for some advice.

My basic problem i'm connected to a network and it seems to be changing its security type. jumping from WPA2-PSK to WEP.

I'm using this same wifi antenna. What's weird is no other detectable network does this. my pc's network access menu only rarely shows the change from wpa2-psk to wep but I did get inSSIDer for checking this thing, and it does show its changing security types about every minute or so.

The other strange thing it would never let me connect at all with just entering the key, only by manually making a network. sometimes it shows full bars, others (like now when i'm typing) it shows a red X over the icon.

I went and checked for any strangeness but can't find anything in there, but it is broadcasting 2 separate frequencies, 2.4 and 5 GHz at the same time. I can see that both frequencies are set to use WPA2-PSK, with the same password but different SSIDs.

The noticeable thing is when it has the red X the internet seems slower, and tends to just not let anything after the 1st few minutes of using the net.

Any ideas what's going on with this stuff? i've never seen any network do this.
And yes, i'm on neighbors wifi, and they do know i'm poking around. any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I can do screenshots if needed/appropriate.

A:Weird Wifi Activity

howdy and welcome. Whether or not the neighbor knows about your using their wifi is immaterial, as it's the ISP that makes the call as to whether or not it's legal. And ISP's do not allow that, unfortunately, so I'm going to have to close this one up.

thanks for understanding,

In my Windows Task manager I have this: "rundll32.exe msvcrt.dll,sleep". This process hogs memory and CPU time like crazy. It can go to 550MB of RAM and 50% of CPU time pretty quickly one it starts up. I end this process from time to time, but it comes on again after a while. I end it 3 to 4 times a day. I was wondering if my msvcrt.dll is hijacked by some virus?

My laptop is fairly new (only got it 3 weeks ago), but already i have experienced a BSOD around 2 weeks ago and two crashes, both a few days apart.

Today's crash was odd though: I forced a restart when it became unresponsive (i was installing updates at the time) and as it loaded it came up with the usual safe mode suggestions, but then, after telling it to start normally, it came up with a black screen with some white text and was cycling through registry keys. It was over very quickly so I'm afraid i cannot give more details, but i remember seeing "600 items" or something similar. Is this a vista recovery operation or something more sinister? After it was done, the computer didn't continue to load up but restarted itself, at which point it loaded fine.

Anyone know what this was? Thanks.

Oh, i also checked the reliability tool but nothing reported for the 13th.

A:crash then weird activity

Hi. . .

Given the fact that you experienced a BSOD on a 1 week-old new laptop and now seeing the information on subsequent crashes, I would recommend that you reset the laptop back to factory condition by re-installing Vista via the recovery partition.

Usually you press an F key to invoke the recovery partition - it may be F10, F11, ctrl-F11, or the esc key. Look in your owners manual for the exact key/combination.

This will place your system back to the way it was when you turned it on for the first time.

If you have difficulties or questions, please let me know.'

Decided to come here before I decide to reformat and be left in the lurch and basically updateless.

Backstory: OK so the household has never had 'decent' internet as such and it has always been quite slow because of where we are, old house, etc etc.
We must be on some sort of low band 'talktalk' internet which has to be 3mb or 4mb at the most 5mb, nothing major. It is forever lagging out often reconnecting seconds later or there has been problems with our regional providing tower which means we've been out of internet due to technical problems or weather
Speed.net tests have resulted in around the 4.5mb on a good day and that's if noones using except on person. When everyone is using it its considerably slower because of the obvious bandwidth consumption.

So lately, and realising the problem it must be for a good 3-4 months now, things have been becoming a bit temperamental to do with the internet connectivity from the wireless router to my laptop. But it was only little things so I just assumed it was bandwidth or our provider had done something etc.

Well anyway, things like messengers started signing themselves out and then back in again, often lagging out before it happens meaning I don't get what people have said or messages haven't been sent. This happens mostly for Live Messenger and Skype. Only Skype now because I no longer use Live Messenger and for ever have to appear offline to save them from me constantly loggi... Read more

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer! I am Elle and I will be helping you out with your problem. Firstly, you should know that we are working with specific tools which are used to identify the possible threats present on your system so I will analyze the results they produce. As a start we need to have some more up-to-date logs than the ones you have already provided. The current state of the files on your system might have changed so we need to get a clear look on that aspect. DO NOT bring any changes to the system except the ones I tell you to as that may produce more damage than helping us. If you will encounter a delay of over 2 days from me, please don't hesitate and private message me (link in the signature). Do not forget to check your topic periodically and subscribe to it so that you can receive notifications regarding my replies. Please generate another DDS log (download it from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com'>here if you haven't already) and post it in your next reply along with other changes that may have occured since you last posted. Also download and run GMER from this link: GMER download link.Thank you very much for your patience. Hello All,

I have a weird activity going on with my HP laptop. The laptop is a custom DV3. Here are the specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit (upgraded in place from Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit)
Intel Core 2 Duo P7550 @ 2.26 GHz
BIOS version: F.12
4GB DDR3 ram
NVidia Geforce G 105M w/ 512MB dedicated video ram
I have been noticing that my computer has been slow lately and that every time I restart, Win7 starts the chkdsk command at boot. The abnormal thing is that it hangs at the end of the "hit any button to skip check" countdown. The other issue that I have is that under Disk Defrag, my C: drive does not show up. I believe that this is due to the "dirty bit" being active on the C: drive.

I have tried to do the commands listed on this page: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/465184-volume-dirty.html
and unfortunately I am in the same position. I do not want to let this issue run rampant and I feel that I am at a stand still with it.

Any help or advice would be awesome. I am hoping I do not have to format to fix this issue.

have had no issue at all for a long time and all was well. Then this week I was on my pc (Windows XP) and went to shut down the pc, but when I went to Start to look for shute down it was not there and neither was the Run command. I researched online and found out it maybe called the quickinfo virus. I followed a few steps and got back the run command and shutdown button. I though all was fine but now when I go to open Adobe Photoshop CS I get and error I must have Admin rights to load program and it shuts down. I looked at user accounts and their is only one mine and it has admin rights. Also if I hit ctrl+alt+delete it says it has been diabled as I do not have admin rights.

How do I fix this issue?

Is this the name of the virus I have, or is it something else?

I pasted what I followed to get links back below just as FYI. Please help as I can not do any work. Thanks Much

At that point I can't do much of anything until it's finished, which takes around half a minute or so usually. It happens with a folder with media files in it, and even just text files. What could be causing this? It's very annoying. Could it be my antivirus (Avira)? Is Windows doing this? Could I have some setting enabled in Windows that causes this to happen? Once the folder is opened and it stops whatever it was doing, it won't happen again until I shut off the pc and open that folder again. It seems something is scanning the files in the folders when I open them.

Quite possible.

Yesterday Windows Update installed Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.37.579.0) and asked that my computer was restarted.

After re-booting I tried to connect to the internet to play Lord of the Rings Online and I could not. I have a dial-up connection (only thing available still where i live) and I kept on getting the message:

Connecting... verifying user name and password
Error 1717: Unknown interface

I phoned my ISP and after creating a new connection and rebooting the comp with everything disabled in msconfig/startup I was able to connect. After that I re-enabled everything I needed again and internet still connected no problem but when I try to play LOTRO I get the message in the launcher: A connection attempt failed and it keeps on retrying to connect but it always fails.

I checked my Firewall and my lotro client is in the approved applications. I tried Turbine LOTRO support and asked them what to do and if I should do a system restore and they said it might not be a bad idea.

Any suggestions here? Is a system restore necessary? Or should I try to uninstall that latest security update? Anybody else have problems after that update?

Have Dell 4500S w/P4 -1.7Mhz, 128 Ram, Windows XP Home Edition

I currently am subcribed to two dial-up ISP's for comparative purposes. However, when I complete a connection to either of them initially I then get a message box from Microsoft which reads as follows;

"Slipaccel.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

Interestingly, when I make a second or successive connection during the same boot session I am able to successfully connect to one of the ISP's (NetZero). Unfortunately, not only is the initial connection shut down with the other ISP, but repeat attempts are also shut down ( AllVantage).

There is a request in that Microsoft dialogue box to send in the error report, but since I have no Internet connection at that point I don't know how the message can be sent.

I would appreciate some advice on how to remedy this predicament.

Thanks !!

Try removing the AllVantage account. It might be conflicting with NetZero which uses the Slipstream Internet Accelerator (possibly in program files\quicknet accelerator).

Is there an accelerator icon in the system tray near the clock that can be disabled?

Every time that I attempt to connect to my desktop PC (running Windows 7 Professional x64) from my laptop (running Windows 7 Professional x86), the connection fails on the first attempt. The connection is established and I see the welcome screen on the host PC with the blue circular Windows icon. After about 3-5 seconds, though, the circular icon freezes. If I wait, I receive an error message that the computer could not connect. However, the second connection attempt always works! I just cannot figure out why that initial connection fails. It is puzzling and inconvenient to have to always try once, have the connection fail, and then do it again.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I recently bought for $100 an IBM ThinkPad 570with full-up 192 MB of RAM. A steal! A great laptop; small, light, flexible...

...and one that doesn't come with either a floppy drive or a CD-ROM drive. You *can* buy these in a docking station; but that station is expensive, and not generally easily available.

But, said I to myself, hey, it's gonna be EASY! I'll just hook the two computers up (the home system and the laptop) by direct cable connection and slip the files over the LPT1 ports of each computer. Easy! A breeze!

Er...not yet it isn't.

Let me describe the other, home, host system first, and then I'll describe what I've done so far and what the problem I'm having is.

I have a Compaq with a 10gig HD, about 256mb of RAM, and it is running Windoze 2000 Professional SP-3. It has a nice 56x CD-R/RW burner/CD-ROM drive, a floppy, and the standard set of ports (parallel, serial, two USB ports, a video out port in addition to the one being used, etc.). A 56k modem of course. An NIC card with jack.

The laptop, the ThinkPad 570, has a 6gig HD, a serial port, a 56k modem, parallel port, PS2 mouse port, a USB port, an IR port, two PC card slots, and the connector for the docking station.

I had a standard (?) laplink-type parallel cable, DP25 male to male, and it plugs into each computer's parallel ports. Each computer seems to bring up the necessary DCC software, and it all seems to configure easily, too.

Hi all, My firewall has alerted me to an unusual outgoing connection attempt with the following...

Microsoft file and printer sharing trying to make outgoing connection
with I.P. address on port microsoft-ds [445]

This is unusual in that I never see any unexpected outgoing connection attempts. The firewall is set to alert me to and unknown incoming or outgoing connections.

I disabled file and printer sharing on my LAN but after rebooting the same connection attempt was made again so after denying permission for a second time I was interested to find out more.

I have googled the IP and found it is located somewhere near Johannesburg but I'm kind of stuck getting any further and not sure how I might find out more.

Really what I'm trying to find out is why my computer might be trying to connect to this address seemingly of its own accord and if this is something I need to be concerned about?

Can anyone help me shed some more light on this please?

I am seeking advice here to solve a problem with internet connection on my laptop.
The laptop (Thinkpad X61 running 32 bit Vista) seems to be ok to connect to my router, which is connected to a cable modem. Internet is also connected on the base level (more details below). However Internet Explorer (or firefox, opera) cannot find any web page, and Mozilla Thunderbird email program cannot connect to email server.
I am decently ok with computers, so I have run some checks myself. This is not a problem of router or cable modem, as my other computers can access internet through the same router and modem. Also, the laptop gets an IP address from the router and can connect to shared resources on other computers within the same network.
The laptop also finds outside addresses and get a response when I run ping command, e.g. ping www.google.com or ping www.yahoo.com, suggesting that the connection to DNS server is fine at the base level.
I was suspecting that windows firewall, my Symantec antivirus or VPN is creating the problem. But the problem persists after I disabled firewall and the antivirus software and deleted VPN connection.
One important thing to mention is that this problem starts when after a software install, which I removed afterwards. I tried to run netsh reset by "netsh winsock reset catalog", "netsh int ipv4 reset myreset.log" and "netsh int ipv6 reset myreset.log" and restart. Still does not work.

I'm using Vista Home Basic and although the sound is turned on for the internal modem I can't hear when it's dialling, most disconcerting really. It connects ok and the connection works fine. The other thing with it is that the little blue squares in the corner that show connection activity, dont. I have the activity animation turned on but nothing happens. Any Ideas?

A:Modem sound & connection activity

Hi, ceedeei.

I don't call where I read it as it was some time ago. However, as I recall, there is no sound when dialing with a modem on Windows Vista. In fact, from Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Phone and Modem Options > Modems > Properties > Modem, note that the speaker volume is grayed out and not adjustable.

As to activity animation, I really didn't see a difference with animation on or off. The main thing is that it is connected. We dial-up users may not have the speed of broadband connections, but we're still making our way around.

I'm running Windows XP Pro and have a Linksys Wireless G router and a broadband cable connection (Road Runner). I also am running ZoneAlarm (free edition).

Problem: I would be surfing and chatting and such and sporadically for about 5 minutes, I would not be able to load web pages or check my email. It would give me the typical message that you would get if you weren't connected to the internet. However, my instant messaging program (AIM) would continue to work. Generally this would only last 5 minutes or so and then I'd be able to access email and webpages again. Also, if I were to power cycle the modem and router it would also solve the problem.

I tried calling Time Warner to see if it was their fault and the guy told me that it was because I was using ZoneAlarm and that I don't need an extra firewall. He told me to turn off ZoneAlarm and turn off the Windows Firewall because my router acts as a firewall.

I'm a little skeptical about this idea. Anyway, does anybody have any suggestions on what this could be? I probably forgot to give some information too so let me know. Thanks!

edit: Also, I should clarify that the problem is not just a wireless thing because it does not go away when I am connected via ethernet cable.

In the last year, I've had three BSODs at various times. Once, it happened while I was playing a game, and I assumed the problem was with either my graphics drivers, my graphics hardware, or with the game itself. The second one, however, came while I was using OpenOffice.org Writer, and the third happened this morning, when I was browsing the internet. (I think I have those first two right. I might be wrong, and the .dmp files might show it. After all, it's been a while, and I'm old and my memory is faulty. *chuckles*)

I know three BSODs might not sound like a lot, but I'm moderately concerned, and have no idea how to read .dmp files. I've attached the files, in case that helps, all in one handy .zip.

Thank you, in advance, for your assistance.

A:Three BSODs in the last year. No activity connection.

Three different dates (Sept, Nov, and now) and three different causes. The only one relevant is the most recent and it was caused by memory management (probably a driver).

The first was hardware, the second inconclusive, and now memory management. These might all be one offs and the cure might be worse than the disease.

If you want to follow through these tests will help you find out which driver.
These crashes were caused by memory corruption probably a driver.
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have a Raid update its Driver.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5-7 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition.
Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is.

I've been having trouble with my internet service ever since Adelphia merged with Comcast. (I disliked comcast to begin with.) My cable modem constantly goes into a state where the activity light just stays solid and I cannot connect to anything. The only way I've found to fix it is to unplug and replug the power but this is becoming extremely frustrating to do 2-3 times daily. I've called my service provider to help out with it, they usually replace the modem with a new one and it works right for about a week.

Hi guys,
I would really appreciate your help with this. My antivirus notified of malware yesterday (I failed to take note of malware name). Also scanned with WIN defender at the time and noticed BrowserModifier:Win32/DefaultTab in history but I think my antivirus found something else too. I proceeded with cleaning/quarantining etc but I lost internet connection afterwards (displays as connected to wifi router but internet connection not available). I followed multiple online guides to fix it but no luck. I also performed system restore (I know I probably shouldn't have done that) but again no luck. Also the fan is constantly very loud, HDD activity is at 100% and it takes a good while to boot up, and when it does, it is terribly slow (5 mins to open ccleaner for example).
Attached is FRST log & additon. Hope you don't mind that I'm attaching both as it's huge.
Laptop details:
Make: Acer V3-771g (i7 8GB RAM  - shouldn't be slow at all...)
Thank you in advance!

so i started college 3weeks ago. at home i used wireless networking and everything worked fine. I come to college and i have to use an ethernet cable. I haver had problems ever since. if you all open your local area connection status u will notice that the difference between your sent and recieved packets is probably fairly close. Mine isnt. my connection is only active when i am loading web page, if i am just downloading it goes dead, if im just sitting on the computer im not sending and rarely recieving any packets. also when i am activly sending and recieving packets i recieve way more than i send which causes slow and incomplete loading of websites and i rarely get a good install, something usually gets corrupted.
What have i done to fix it:
completly reimaged my computer... clean xp, did all the updates
checked for driverupdates for my motherboard, graphics card, network card
bought a new network card
used a different cat-5 cable
used a different port in the wall
used a switch
unisntalled and re installed service pack 2
adjusted virtually every networking option i could adjust

since aquiring the switch i have connected both my crappy pc and my new laptop to it. the laptop works fine, so it cant be the port in the wall, or the switch, i have tryed the laptop with both cables and it works fine with both so it cant be the cable. the nic is brand new and works just the same as the integrated 3com nic on my motherboard.

I have an IBM thinkpad that runs XP. It recently got a slew of trojans, but they weren't causing a whole lot of trouble. I decided to do what I could to get rid of them and after consulting friends who know computers, I did the following. I updated AVG and turned off system restore and rebooted my computer in safe mode. I ran AVG and it detected somethings and deleted them. I rebooted in regular mode and then I realized that I couldn't get online. It says I'm connected and that I have great connectivity, but nothing will connect, and there is little to no activity. Hardly any packets being sent or recieved. What is further puzzling is that I tried to install another wiresless thing that I was using on my desktop... same problem.
