Internet Explorer Security zones and Protected Mode

Q: Internet Explorer Security zones and Protected Mode

I was checking the Internet Explorer default security settings for the different zones. I haven't changed anything and mine are showing Protected Mode is Enabled for the Internet and Restricted zones.
But Protected Mode is set to Off for Local Intranet and Trusted sites. Are these settings the correct defaults?
I have read on some sites that Protected Mode is set to be Enabled by default for all the zones except the Trusted zone or was this with older versions of Internet Explorer?
Im not even sure what a Local Intranet is!! Im just accessing the Internet using a single PC from home and my computer is using the Private Network setting

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
I do not pretend to be a expert at this. I did just look at my Windows 8.1 Internet explorer settings and they are exactly as You describe Yours are set. I do tend to use FireFox a lot for the Spell Checker and Internet Explorer 11 for some things.

I hope this helps somewhat

I am using Win 7, 64 bit with IE 8
I went into Internet Options, Security Tab and turned Protected Mode off for each of the Internet zones (I don't remember why) but then later turned Prot Mode on again for each of the zones.

But the status bar at the bottom of IE 8 window says Protected Mode is Off.

How do I get the Status to indicate properly?

A:Internet Explorer 8 Protected Mode On or Off

1.) Launch Internet Explorer.

2.) Go to 'Advanced tab' in 'Internet Options' Pop up window.

3.) Down below 'Settings' clcik on "Restore advanced settings"

4.) Now under "Recent Internet Explorer settings" click "Reset..."

5.) Restart IE.

I'm  trying to understand how these two options work together.
If 'Run As Administrator' is unchecked
on IE shortcut, does Protected Mode in IE Option work or not?
If 'Run As Administrator' is checked
on IE shortcut, does Protected Mode in IE Option work or not?
In my assumption, the Enable Protected mode in in IE internet zone only works when IE process is launched with a standard  user access token the user uses . If IE process is launched from a administrative user token (run as administrator), will this
IE Option still work if it's checked and restrict access to securable objects like system files and registries?

Since August 28th Automatic Download from Microsoft, I've been unable to print documents in Internet Explorer which concern mostly finance. This includes Intuit payroll check stubs, my bank statement, and sometimes a recipe. The webmaster at the USPS consulted about the inability to no longer do Click N Ship labels suggested Internet Explorer 8 as the villain and suggested I change browser. Should I go back to Internet Explorer 7 and if so how. Using a different browser like Mozilla's would be difficult because of my vision. I have to stick with what I know. Or should I delete the update if that is where 8 replaced 7?
If you can help please e-mail me at [email protected]
PS If I disable protected mode even for a few minutes, my computer just goes crazy with security warnings... and this doesn't work in all cases such as Click N Ship.

Ok, this question has been asked around many corners of the Internet and these forums and I haven't found a "real" answer so I'm asking it again and hopefully seeking a final resolution to the problem.
Symptoms

When "Protected Mode" is turned On, users are unable to view some folders in the file upload dialog that they can normally view (e.g. under Documents, Pictures, etc.).When viewing the same folders in Explorer running as the same user as the Internet Explorer instance, the missing folders are viewable.Launching Internet Explorer "as an administrator" allows the user to view the missing folders (but this is not recommended due to security concerns).
Workarounds
So far, the workaround that I found was to either run some crazy tool from BleepingComputer called Unhide that resets everything on your system -- this is the sledge hammer-to-thumbtack approach.  Another one was to go into Organize > Folder and
search options > View and uncheck the hide options and select the show radio option.  The last one was to search for the folder in the file upload dialog, right-click the folder, and uncheck Hidden.
None of these, IMHO, are valid solutions to the real problem which is that something is special about this folder that is causing IE in Protected Mode to treat the file as Hidden.
Thoughts
The last "workaround" seems to indicate that the "hidden" file attribute is set for the file, but this doesn't app... Read more

If I want to reduce the level of access that a malicious website might have on computer, then I can turn on Phishing filter and that takes care of this problem.
I just came to know that , I can enable IE Protected mode and that will reduce the level of access a malicious website might have on computer.

Are both these solutions used for the same purpose ? Which one is better option ?

Thanks

A:Whats difference between Phishing filter and Internet Explorer Protected Mode ?

In Protected Mode, Internet Explorer cannot modify user or system files and settings without user consent. Protected Mode requires the user to confirm any activity that tries to put something on your machine or start another program. By ensuring the user consents to these kinds of actions, the likelihood of automated or unwanted software installation is reduced. This feature also makes you aware of what a website is trying to do, giving you a chance to stop it and take time to double check the trustworthiness of the website.

Phishing is the technique of convincing a user to send personal information to a bogus (or potentially malicious) website that is designed to appear legitimate. The Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer combines a local system scanning for suspicious website characteristics with an online service.

Hope this makes sense.

In Internet Options under the Security tab, click on each zone icon at the top to double check that the Protected Mode option is checked in each zone. Be sure to close and reopen all instances of IE8 to apply the changes afterwards. You may not have it checked in one of them, or did not open and close IE8 afterwards before.

But clicked the protected mode back on, and getting a warning its still off, is there a problem with having links in trusted sites and having the protected mode running? Or did i miss something??

What does the internet Protected mode do and shouldn t it be on if possible? - thanks . . .

A:Internet Protected Mode

From the Microsoft website: "In Protected Mode, Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista cannot modify user or system files and settings without user consent. Protected Mode requires the user to confirm any activity that tries to put something on your machine or start another program."

The first thought that comes to mind is the browser reset function that restores IE7 back to facorty defauts. This tends to clear up alot of thoses things like this that cause strange problems. You can find the Reset in the Internet Options under the Advanced tab.

Hi. I am using windows Vista. At the bottom of the screen when I am in explorer an using the internet - it says Protected Mode: Off. It used to day 'On'. I am worried why it has changed. How can I switch it back on again - also what does it mean? what is it protecting me from. I have installed some plug-ins - maybe this is why?

Thank you

A:Internet Protected mode has changed by itself!

Go to Tools / Internet Options , Security Tab.

Click on each icon, then for each icon's page, checkmark Enable Protected Mode ....
It doesn't do any harm to enable protected mode for all types of sites.

IE classifies web sites you go to, and detects whether they are local on your hard drive, on your intranet etc. and turns Protected Mode on or off accordingly. After setting the checkmark as per above, it will always be on.

Hi,
Since a few days back a strange problem started ocurring for some users in our domain. Some have IE9 others like me have IE11. Problem is that IE can't browse Internet pages (it just keep loading with the white screen) when Protected mode is ON. Previously
there was no problem with this. Other browsers don't have this issue. OS in the company is Win7.
Thank you.
Leo.

A:Can't browse Internet zone when protected mode is ON

Hi Leo,
Could you please include a link(s) (copied from the IE Address bar) to any website you are having problems with, in your questions. This will enable us to visit the sites to make some tests and guesses.
Protected Mode, on Win7 forces the IE tab process to use a x64 process, so x86 activex controls will not run and are blocked.
For IE11/Win7 there is also ActiveX filtering which will stop x86 or x64 ActiveX controls from running.
IE11 also has depreciated the ActiveXControl object which some sites may use for feature detection. From memory, I don't think IE9 had ActiveX filtering, but there are Addons for all versions of IE (Flash block for example) that have a similar functionality.
Use Tools>Manage Addons>Show all Addons to locate and find the properties of your installed ActiveX controls and whether or not they have been disabled.
So I await your re-post with some sample web addresses where the problem is occurring.
Also, the first step in troubleshooting web browser issues is to test in noAddons modeRob^_^

I have recently removed js\wonka from my pc with mcafee security centre and I was still having problems, so I ran spybot s+d which removed an entry which it called Internet Explorer. Something still keeps trying to change my internet explorer security zones and redirect me to another site but the attempt seems to be being blocked by my security software. I have now scanned with Spyware Terminator which is identifying 3 registry entries 2 of which are SBToolbar (I havent had an extra toolbar?!) and trojan\cws coolwebsearch. It will not remove any of the entries because it says that part of the programs have already been removed. I have now scanned with mcafee, ad-aware, spybot s+d and Spyware Terminator and the only detections are that of Spyware Terminator which I have already mentioned. Hello,
I'm finding that our users are experiencing issues accessing full functionality from multiple web sites and when I disable Protected Mode, their issue is resolved.  I have some specific cases that I would like to share:
1. A website which is secured.  The Windows security dialog appears and prompts the user to enter credentials (Not an HTML form...this is a windows dialog).  If protected Mode is enabled on the Internet zone, then this prompt never appears and
therefore the users cannot sign-in and gain access to the site.
2. OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online are accessed using ADFS for authentication.  The sites were attempting to load but simply timing out until I disabled Protected Mode on the Internet site.  Then the both sites (accessed via
https://portal.office.com) would completely load and be usable.
3. There are others but now that I think of it, they appear to be redundant.  It seems with Protected Mode enabled, authentication does not function properly on multiple sites.  We have tried circumventing this by adding some of these sites to
the Proxy Exceptions List and also configuring policy to treat all Proxy exceptions as Intranet Zone.  Protected Mode is disabled on the Intranet zone.  However, it seems counterintuitive to have Internet sites added to the Intranet Zone or to Bypass
the proxy server to access them.  So I would love to know where I'm going wrong with our configuration of In... Read more

Hi, I have been having some disturbing problems with my computer recently. After running a Spy Sweeper virus scan, I discovered a Trojan/Zlob virus which I thought I took care of by removing. Now, I am having troubles with my Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers, as they will randomly decide to not load anything at all or only after hitting refresh at least 20 times. Typing in a URL takes ages and 3 times so farnone of my browsers were working and when i closed the browser window my computer immediately bluescreened and crashed. When I start Windows back up and report the error, I get a report saying it is caused by an unknown driver. I looked into my Add/Remove list and found Internet Explorer Security plugin 2006 and Internet Security Addon, whihc I thought were suspicious. Please do not post your Hijack this logs here. Due to Forum Rules we cannot assist in malware removal here. Have you tried a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc)? When you say IE only works in Safe Mode with Networking, Do you mean you boot the computer normally and use IE (safe mode) or are you booting the computer into Safe Mode with Networking? In other words you can't boot normally?
If you feel you are infected, please click on the Virus/Trojan link in my signature and post there for more help.

I have never seen this happen before so I figured I should post about it.
When I signed in to my hotmail address to check my email earlier today, I noticed in the bottom right corner of my browser window where it normally says "internet", it said "Uknown Zone(mixed)". After I logged out of hotmail it changed to "Internet". Does this mean anything, should I investigate and if so....how?
Thanks for any advice!

I have tried to run IE7 in normal mode and I always get a "The address is not valid" window. I have a good internet connection and Firefox works flawlessly. I do not have connection problems. If I ran IE7 in Safe Mode with Networking, I can bring up webpages with no problems. I thought that upgrading to IE8 would cure the problem but I am still getting the exact same problem. I have tried checking many things and have tried many suggestions that I have found through web searches but nothing works. Please help!

Hello all.

I have to take a trip down to Arizona, right now I am in Ct. I use cable to access the network to the web.

While I am in Arizona, I would like to try and find, and take advantge of using the free access to the internet I have been hearing about. I guess some people give acess to others for free in some areas.

First I dont know if there is a list of this free acess for the Phoniex Arizona area.

Second, I'm not sure how to do this on my laptop. Sure I have the nic card. I have a wireless nic card, and I have a built in modem in my Sony FX series vio laptop.

I would like to now how to configue my nic, if I have to, and second, do I have to have a connection to the web say a service for modem to the web? I am not sure if my cable service, (Cox Cable) if they provide a map to the internet through phone line, or wireless nic.

My wireless nic is the Linksys that went with the wireless hubs from linksys model wap11 network access point.

Can someone that knows about this please let me know how I would access the internet. I am going next week to Phoenix and would like to try different locatings outside to see if I can pick up service, outside.

Or if I have to get a moble service, what type do you all recommend to use for traveling. I will be traveling only a couple times, but I need to have access to the web.

Should I get a line to telephone jack service just for the two times I go, or a wirless service for the wirless nic.

A:free internet zones?

hi, first off before you leave your cable service behind download Netzero from www.netzero.net. Best free dial-up service around with I think 15 hrs free each month, good for email checks and such. The program has a front face that asks for the state and area code you are going to be in and finds the closest number to you. Check to make sure its not a toll charge and log in.
This of course is dial-up, I don't know of any free broadband around that you can use on the road.
Second, most cable companys have web mail clients accessible from their home page with a log in.

Hi all,

I noticed that the indicator for Internet Zones at the bottom right corner of my browser changes to "Local Intranet" when I visit certain sites. My computer is totally a standalone, I don't have any other computers at home, so there's no reason for it to be part of a "local" web.
Does this sound fishy to you?, should I be concerned of a possible hacker/hijack, or am I just being paranoid?

Any and all comments appreciated.

A:free internet zones?

I'll try to post this again I really am trying to come up with the best idea on this qestion. I'm not sure how to handle this idea, I have heard time and time that free zones even over lap each other to get better distance for free internet, like downtown, ect. I am going to Arizona for a week and want to use my laptop, but dont know if I should pay for a telephone line to hook into the hotel room, then when I come home It wont be needed cause I use cable at home, and any telephone line to hook into laptop will be a waste unless you can get service month to month. that would be ok, this way I wont be in a yearly contract

Anyone have any good internet service they recommend for telephone line? Again its just for a week. I want to relocate out west and am looking into Arizona, I would like to look into California, but not sure where to look into relocating to in California, dont know anyone there either.

Thanks

Eli.

I just did a reload and went to use IE7 and saw that the protected mode was Off.

I double clicked on it, lower right side of screen, and a Security box came up indicating that it was in the Protected Mode, with the upper Internet Icon being assigned to the setting.

I unchecked the box and clicked Apply and a couple warning boxes came up and I clicked OK on them. I then got off of IE7.

Later I came back to IE7 and went to the Security box again and clicked to Enable the Protected Mode. I then got off of IE7 and then later came back, I did not do a restart, and it still did not take. I am still in the Protected Mode: Off status.

Does anyone have any advice as to how I can get this change to stick?

Any inputs will be appreciated. Thanks

A few days ago I picked up the Internet Security 2010 virus. We have Malwarebytes on the laptop so I did a scan with it and cleaned what it found. I then tried to restart in safe mode and run the scan again but the safe mode went straight to a blue screen that says PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

I then restarted the laptop in normal mode and now I have no internet connection. I also can't access any firewall modes. Now when I run malwarebytes it comes back clean. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The laptop is a Dell inspiron e1705 and has windows xp. We use AVG free for virus protection. I do have internet access with my desktop.

Update: I can no longer start windows in normal mode or safe mode. Either one takes me to the Blue Screen

The message is a waste of my screen real estate. Yes, Protected mode is turned off. Sure it is, I turned it off myself, and it will stay off. Now how do I disable this annoying nag message?
Also the messages about File Downloads. Never once in my life I clicked a download link by mistake. Yes, I'm clicking that dang URL, because I wan't to download that dang file, now get out my way, annoying warning message. How do I disable this one
too? Thank you in advance

Hi,
Based on my research, this is by design. You cannot disable the warning when you open a new IE windows.
If you find have any inconveniences or suggestions, please submit your feedback to our Product Feedback Team :

Hello!

The subject says it all. We have all the
PCs in a domain. Via GPO
is "Enhanced Protected Mode"
aktivated.
Under Win 8.1.
everything works perfectly.

Update on Win10: domain user
(with roaming profiles
- but should not matter ...) are not able to open any page in IE zone "internet. If I type the URL manually and press ENTER, nothing happens. When I click on a link tp any external page on our
intranet page, two new tabs open with
the URL "res:
//ieframe.dll/acr_error.htm#,about: blank"

Intranet and Trusted Sites
(also via GPO defined) works fine (because protected mode is disabled for them by default).

By trial and error I found out that it
is the "EPM" that causes the problem.
If I switch it off, IE works again.

But why does it work
under Win8.1 and no longer
under Win10?
(BTW, when I try to start IE like this "iexplore -extoff", it opens with an empty window, stays for about ten seconds and then closes again. No error message, nothing ...)

Can anyone confirm this behavior?

Michael

I for one love a challenge.. ( to a point)
Have a newer computer here running Windows 7 with office 2010.  The user double clicks on an excel spreadsheet and up comes Excel as it should, and up comes the document.  All of the options are grayed out so it is either opening in read only mode or some sort of protected mode, I suspect the latter.
Here is the gotcha; if you move the document on the screen, or minimize it and maximize it, all is normal after that.  Currently scanning for VIRI but I don’t think I will find anything.

Ideas?

A:Document opens in read only mode protected mode until...

Sounds as though the document is not active until selected. But, this is only a guess on my part.

Users of the world's second best* browser were forced to use alternatives after an overnight update to Norton AntiVirus prevented Internet Explorer from working at all.
Aggrieved users who'd thought far enough ahead to install Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or any of the other alternatives took to Norton's official forum to vent their spleens.
"Sometime this evening, IE11 started crashing. In fact, it crashed an already-open browsing session, and now trying to start it up just instantly causes a 'Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working' error," wrote support forum contributor Sunfox, sparking an 11-page thread.
Forumites shortly figured out that an update to Norton Internet Security 360 had broken something critical relating to IE, with monkeynuts posting:
I have uninstalled NIS and IE started working. Then reinstalled NIS, and once the patch was deployed IE started crashing again.
Tales of woe, heartbreak and downloads of new browsers spread, until about 0400 GMT, at which point a member of Symantec staff posted: "Kindly run manual live update (right click on Norton icon on tray notification area > 'Run live update ')," helpfully adding "Kindly stop using work-arounds."
At which point all seemed to be well, judging by the forum posts from then on. Various Reg readers whose machines had auto-updated overnight then wrote to us to let us know what had happened.
El Reg has contacted Symantic, owners of the Norton brand, for comment and will update this story if we hear b... Read more
