PC freezes upon opening games that used to work fine

Q: PC freezes upon opening games that used to work fine

I'll begin by saying how it happened:

My PC used to be filled with junk files and had some viruses that got through my anti-virus and couldn't be cleaned. One of my co-workers suggested I do a factory reset, and while I am an avid gamer, I don't really understand much when it comes to hardware, so I let the IT company I usually go to do the reset.

Prior to the factory reset, I had many games on my PC - Two of them were League of Legends, and the non-steam version of an MMORPG called Wakfu.

After the reset, I redownloaded these games, and once I opened the launchers for either of these two games, my PC screen froze.

I realize that this might be a hardware issue and not something that you yourselves can fix. However, if you can, please tell me what might be the problem in question. I've already confirmed that my AMD Radeon HD and Intel HD 4000 are up to date, so the gpu isn't the problem.

**Aside from these two games, all my other games work fine. I have no idea what these two games have in common, just thought it would be important to mention though. If you need more info please ask

Preferred Solution: PC freezes upon opening games that used to work fine

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I am running windows XP home edition SP 2, accessing internet via Road Runner. I upgraded Internet Explorer. It froze so I killed it and restarted again. It finished properly the second time, or so it seemed.

IE7 ran OK the first time. The 2ns time it froze on a blank window. No toolbars, no status bar, no nothing, just the frame and blank inside.

Other symptoms: Internet Options opens up OK from the control panel, and every tab seems OK, but when I go connections, LAN settings, the button shows depressed, and the thing freezes.

I can access the WWW without a problem via Firefox. Outlook sends and receives email without a hitch. But any program that checks internet options to see about proxy settings or similar, freezes. Example Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Example the setup program for Max Registry Cleaner and Registry Mechanic.

I ran a virus scan with AVG. The machine was clean. I cleaned up the registry with RegistryFix. There were a lot of lose ends, now it is clean. I ran AVG Anti Spyware. It has a residue of 45 tracking cookies, nothing else. I uninstalled Intellicast and the Zinio reader. Nothing made a difference.

Here is the log from Hijack This. I will be most thankful for your help in figuring out this one.

For all the more graphically intense games eg: Age of Mythology (offline) , Ijji games, Combat Arms, Maple Story, etc. I've been having some really weird lag spikes that never happened before.

So the game starts off excellent, no lag whatsoever then 5, 10 minutes into the game huge lag spike.

For the fps games the frame isnt frozen just the other people. While my character moves around, a few seconds later people are 20 feet to the left.

Other games (Age of Mythology, Maplestory) is the same except it never really freezes but jumps and its really slow, even though it worked fine for the first few minutes.

I don't know if its my computer or the game. Can someone help?

Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

7 GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9100 Integrated Graphics

to BC mate.
The Event Viewer errors you posted indicates possible issues with your hard drive. SO my first advise is nothing but to backup all important data to an external medium as an insurance. You can use USB HDD , Flash drive or DVD to backup the data. Then follow the below steps.
1. Download Crystal Disk Info Standard Edition portable from the below link.
2. Run the tool and it will display the SMART data of your hard drive. Now Choose Edit --> Copy and all the data will be copied to the clipboard. then open Notepad and choose Edit --> Paste and save the file.  Attach this text file with next reply using More reply options --> Attach files.
3. Specify the exact make and model number of your Motherboard and Hard drive with next reply.

This is my kids' computer, we've had it almost one year. It used to work without any problems until about 3 months ago. Every minute or so, Lego Star Wars game freezes, will then unfreeze and work fine for another minute or so, somethimes it crashes completely. Usually after starting game, the screen will blank and the game minimizes itself, you can then maximize and it works fine. I've tried everything I can think of: uninstalled game, reinstalled game, virus scans, spyware scans, driver updates, defrag, disk clean, increased paging file size... If I'm using Radeon 9250 PCI, shouldn't the Intel 828656 Graphics Controller be disabled? Maybe one of the recent automatic updates changed the driver settings. Any advice?

Hello guys, I've got a client having some trouble getting some pages to open in IE9. It's only certain pages, and the same ones open in Chrome without a problem. No one else in the building is having an issue, just this one machine. If you click on the link to one of the pages, it will just hang there like you didn't click anything, and if you try to open it in a new tab it will just open a new blank tab (although the appropriate address will be in the address bar). These sites all work just fine in Chrome.
What I've tried so far:
-Running IE without add-ons
-Running IE with script debugging enabled and "display notification about every script error" enabled (no errors reported)
-Deleting Cookies
-Resetting IE
-Ran Malwarebytes scan, found 2 FakeAV objects, removal had no impact.
I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm having some connection issues with my wireless internet upstairs, specifically with browsers (using Firefox but I have issues with Explorer and Chrome too). My laptop shows that the signal strength is excellent but for some reason, when I browse the net, the loading is always pooping out or is really slow. I never actually get a "there is no connection" message though. I would be signed into my gmail account and still get new email but the chat is always saying that it can't reach gmail. I can however connect to online games and play with no problems whatsoever.

My bedroom is right above where the router is and I didn't have this problem before. It just started a few months ago and it's really starting to bug me. My desktop (which is also using wireless) and my iPod work perfectly fine as well as my husband's computer and laptop. It seems only my laptop is having this issue.

Chrome has Java and flash built in,
ie has never so the first place to check is removing any existing Java/ Oracle and flash and replace them,
Then make sure they are enabled,

You might find joy switching to software rendering instead of gpu rendering,

You can find more here,

Also make sure active x filtering is not activating,
Gear symbol on the top right/ Safety/ Uncheck anything that is checked,
Run this as a additional way to clear caches,
Temp files delete,
Run this as administrator and Start the scanner,
Shut your machine down after it finishes,

Since i bought this rig a year ago i haven't been able to play any games that runs on the valve engine(half life 2, css, portal etc) more than a few seconds and then the comp reboots.
With Bf2 i can play max 30 minutes and Bf2142 maybe one hour then they crash exactly the same way as Valve games..
All other games i have tried runs without any problem, even the more demanding such as Crysis, Far Cry 2 and Dark Athena.
This is really anoying since the only game i bother about is BF and CSS.

My comp consist of:

cpu: q6600
gfx: 8800 gt 512mb Point of View
mobo: gigabyte ga-n650sli-ds4
ram: 4gb(2x1gb supertalent02 ddr2 pc2-8900u & 2x1gb dimm ddr2 pc26400u)
psu: 570 watt

Cpu temp is at full load 60c and gpu is at full load 70c, i added an extra fan to the gfx and set the fan to 80%. nothing is overclocked.
I tried with diffrent memorys, changed hdds, reinstalled a bunch of times, reinstalled windows xp 32bit, maybe 10 diffrent nvidia drives, also changed settings for the sound card but none of that made any diffrence.
Havent been able to test with other gfx.

Anyone else hade this issue and manage to solve it then please let me know, also greatful for all suggestions.

I have a friend who's computer works great on my network and my computer works great on his network, but when his computer is hooked to his network internet connectivity is slow and intermittantly fails.

Both computers are were connected directly to the router via the same ethernet cable, both units are laptops.

Again, vista believes it is connected to the internet, and it is, but the connection is just horrible. At my house it works beautifully.

His computer that is not connecting:
HP pavilion dv6748us.
procesor is AMD turion64x2
OS VISTA Home Premium 32bit
2 gb RAM

My laptop that worked on his connection is:
old SONY with windows XP pro
1gb RAM

Already have done the following:
Reset internet explorer 7
used the MSCONFIG console to turn off ALL startup processes just in case.
Ran a quick scan with superantispyware

I would have tried a differant browser but I could not download it, took it to my house so I could use a flash drive or let it sit forever and download and to my amazement there was no connectivity issues whatsoever.

My problem is as follows: when launching some .exe files, either by double-clicking in Explorer or by having another program launch them, they show up in the Processes tab in Task Manager, take up some memory, some threads and some handles, and then stay
at 0% CPU and nothing else happens. Launching the file again only adds a new process, equally "dead".
The weird thing is that some files work fine: Chrome, Steam client and at least one Steam game, regedit.exe, msconfig.exe, Adobe reader, VLC media player, one compiled AutoHotKey script...
The ones that conspicuously don't work are OpenOffice (all its .exes), many Steam games, installers for new programs (such as OOo),
other compiled AutoHotKey scripts, Pure Data.
None of these problems seem to appear in Safe Mode.
So lots of stuff still works, but I'd love to fix this and be able to work on text documents and spreadsheets again...
What I've tried so far:

I have done a search and realize there are several threads here that address this, but I haven't been able to solve this. This is the same laptop that I posted a thread about with the bad power button. Not sure if the two are related, since the two problems seemed to crop up around the same time. Anyway, I've tried HP's troubleshooting, but haven't gotten the speakers to work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, checked the volume (duh), and attempted to do a system restore. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that system restore had been apparently been disabled for some time, and there were no restore points to choose from. I've googled this of course, and besides the things I've tried, it seems that either the headphone jack switch is stuck or the speakers are dead. Would both speakers give out at the same time? I've tried jiggling/rapidly pulling a headphone plug in and out to dislodge the switch, no dice. Anymore ideas I can try? I've been using external speakers plugged into the headphone jack, but this gets annoying after awhile.

We have also done a reset and full re install but no joy.

Any one any ideas?

This has been an ongoing issue.
It's come to the point where I'd actually like to know what's going on for educational purposes.
The games themselves run fine WHILE they run.

Whenever I play a game, it shuts the game down in 1-10 minutes or the computer will shut down. No matter what.
No other application will shutdown. More often than not just the game will shut down.

Troubleshooting I've done.

Cleaned out all parts with compressed air.
Monitored the temp of all components. Gpu not over 60. Cpu not over 75 at any point.
Replaced that graphics card.
Replaced that power supply and tested with 2 OTHER known working psus (Because this screams power issue)
Replaced the ram.
Replaced the OS hard drive and reinstalled the OS clean on a new one. (Issue occurs within Windows 8, XP and Windows 7)
Uninstalled Drivers for my graphics card and installed different ones (After cleaning the drivers out in Safe Mode)
Checked the motherboard for bulging/burst capacitors but it seems fine.
2 memory passes on my ram going through them systematically to make sure all the dimms work.

So it's the Processor or the Motherboard.

Has anyone had an issue like this before? Can anyone give me any tools to better diagnose the health of my CPU or mobo before I give up on this rig and go blow $2000 on another box.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If not, chances are you turned off a service that was system critical! You have to be very carefull with the services tab. Once you check that box, YOU HAVE TO READ what each service is! Once the Microsoft ones are gone, there will only be 3rd party services left. You can generally turn off ALL of these, but ones for your Internet Security and Anti-Virus will then not function. I was hoping one of you could help me with this. The other week I saw TEG's page on making changes in the Services (local) tab to speed up performance. I went through every single item listed and made a few changes. Shortly after I did it, I started to discover certain pages I used to visit in Explorer giving me a completely white blank page instead - at the bottom left it will indicate the page is "Done" so it's not a matter of a slow connection. I have restarted my pc numerous times with these settings back to how I believe they were , but no luck. The pages in question open fine in Firefox. I currently run XP Pro.

Here's the list I made as I was making the settings changes. My problem: I have been experiencing (situational) freezes while using my PC, these freezes require me to hold down the power button and reboot.

Details: The situations in which my pc freezes is in low or next to no stress situations, this includes; sitting on the desktop, browsing the web, idle mode, messaging people over steam and msn, and many other little things that shouldn't be causing any problems, right?

The situations in which my pc does not freeze is in games (to avoid my pc freezing while typing this I am sitting in the main menu of a game using the Steam web overlay). I can play intensive games at their maximum settings and my PC never freezes, unless it is the game's fault, and that has only happened on one occasion. It does not freeze when in low stress gaming situations either, like in the main menu of a game.

I think it is hardware related, as it happened on both of my completely separate (and individually formated) installs of Windows XP and Windows 7 (I reinstalled Windows 7 once).

This problem has occurred with both out of the box and fully updated drivers for all pieces of hardware, on XP and 7.

Errors messages:

I have had this issue for awhile, it comes and goes.

I will be playing a computer game, it can be anything from world of warcraft to counter strike and occasionally the computer will freeze. As far as I can tell it will not respond to keyboard input or mouse movements, I do not hear any sounds when it freezes and the monitor will be frozen on whatever window is active at the time.

The only thing I can do at this point is restart the computer and shut down the computer. Upon doing either while the computer boots up it will freeze at random points (windows icon, log in screen, sometimes while the bios is loading).

Not sure if this makes any sense but if I shut down the computer and unplug the power supply and plug it back in then turn the computer on, it usually boots without freezing. I really doubt its an overheating problem because I do not let the computer cool down between restarts or the unplug/plug thing but I am open to all suggestions.

Been getting BSOD when playing CS GO regularly (and immediately) and occasionally on WoW. The best way I can explain the issue is the screen starts to flicker with various shapes and lines, then the display goes out as if I am opening a game in full screen, then my sound starts to repeat, and the cycle ends with a BSOD. I do not have the error # right now, but can probably get one if I need to. I've tried troubleshooting issues myself, tried various settings in both the games, reformatted, and even upgraded my graphics card from a gtx 460 to a GTX 760(the issue started to happen regularly with the 460, immediately after upgrading it did not occur for about a month before it started again). I do not get the issue in Dota2 or heroes of the storm. Not really sure what to do...

Attached is the DM log.

Suddenly I can no longer watch movies. Games play, cds play, audio fine. But I put in a movie and it's like there's no disc here. We've watched movies on it for over a year, so I checked multiple movies that once worked. I've followed the troubleshooting, tried to update driver. The wizard could find no better driver than what is already being used. I DO NOT get an error message. I just don't get anything to show up either under My Computer or in Media Center or Media player. This stumps me. I read somewhere "Security Update for Windows Media Player 6.4 (KB925398)" was a problem but I even went to add/remove programs and couldn't find that particular update, so I couldn't uninstall that. I have a gateway with a tsstcorp dvd +_ rw mlti format double layer drive and Windows XP Media Center Edition.
Thanks for any help.

A:dvd movies stopped playing - games, cds fine

I have an HP a1540n desktop with two R/W CD/DVD drives and two megs of RAM. Recently both drives stopped showing or copying DVDs. When I tiried to copy DVDs I get a message that advrcntr2.dll is not on this system.

I went on the internet and downloaded this .dll and put several copies in various media players and on my Desktop. Still no success. What should I do next and what might be causing this problem?

On Sunday (Feb.24/2019) everything was working fine, games, music, you name it. I turned my computer off and didn't touch it until Wednesday (Feb.27/2019). I turned it on, everything went fine, I started up Itunes and tried to play a song and I heard these sort of digital blips, it's hard to explain, I heard them for a milisecond each and my music wouldn't play. So I closed Itunes and reopened it and music played, I didn't think much of it.

Eventually I opened Twitch and was watching a stream and it was fine but then I started up Anthem and once it got to the first loading screen with sound I heard 3, 1 second long digital error sounds, each a different tone, and no more sound after that. I also noticed that the Twitch stream I was watching stopped showing video at the same time, there was some error on the page. Anthem loaded normally and once it got to the main screen I refreshed the stream and it was fine, sound included, but no sound on Anthem.

Restarting Origin and any games, and even my computer, didn't fix it, eventually I noticed when I would switch my sound output from Speakers to Headphones I had sound with Itunes AND the Origin games in my headphones, but once I switch back to speakers the sound stops.

The only sound outputs I have are Speakers (default device) and Logitech Headphones. Here is the dxdiag:

hello,i recently bought hp pavillion au084tx which i use mostly for gaming purpose.I am experiencing lagging when i run the game on battery(when i am not plugged in to power) but it works perfectly fine when i am plugged in.I basically play medium graphic range games which i think run perfect with my laptop specifaction. The gpu clock speed falls drastically when using on battery. Is this a battery issue or is there a solution for this

A:Games lag on battery but works fine when plugged in

hardik99 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! No, this is not a battery issue. Laptops are designed to lower performance when running on battery in order to conserve power. If you go into the Start Menu and enter "Power Options" you will be able to change the Power Plan your laptop uses. Here's a thread that discusses the different plans: http://www.howtogeek.com/240840/should-you-use-the-balanced-power-saver-or-high-performance-power-pl...Good Luck

Hey guys, this is a long shot but here goes.

For a long time now i have had a few issues with my internet when it comes to just a few specific applications. My Discord chat app only works 50% of the time, the rest of the time, I, aswell as everyone else in the server, sound like robots and it is impossible to use. Dota 2 - works 75% of the time, get random insane lag spikes for 30 minutes at a time where i have literally got 15 seconds delay. Counter strike CSGO - again works perfectly, except, i get randomly disconnected from the server every 20 mins. The reason im writing here is because this problem seems like its something specific, with all the above examples, every single other aspect of my internet is working perfectly fine at the time the issues are happening - the speed is at a constant 52 mb/s dl and 10 mb/s upload. Can download anything very fast, can browse any website or load any video etc etc. Any ideas what it could be?? It happens whether i am plugged in via router or directly plugged into the socket!!

A:Games keep crashing yet the rest of my system is fine

You probably never updated your powersupply as well. Unless that has around 430Watt or more, it may not be strong enough to handle the extra memory and SATA-disks.

So I have been plagued with a problem that has plagued me ever since I had my processor reseated in hopes of solving a boot-up problem: YouTube videos will consistently cause a BSoD upon even so much as scrolling into them. I thought I solved this problem when I uninstalled then reinstalled Adobe Flash and Shockwave, and I think it did work on browsers, but just now, viewing a Flash video on Steam crashed it.
Meanwhile, a cursory test of the Witcher ran without so much of a flicker. Hey, that rhymes.

I'm highly tempted to just reformat at this point, but half a terabyte would definitely not fit on a DVD, so I'm turning to the forum for advice.
EDIT: I might be jittery from the nasty surprise, but I think browser YouTube is causing it to stutter... No, the video itself seems to be stuttering...

Acer E 15 Start ES1-512-C5YW Upgraded to Windows  Watching Avi files that are stored locally on hard disk - If the Ac power cord is plugged in, all is fine, but if power cord is removed and just running on battery power, within minutes, the laptop locks up completely and makes a buzzing noise, no option but to hard reset. Simple solution would be to leave power cord plugged in I know, but I like to keep my battery conditioned by not leaving it plugged in all the time. If it had a removable battery, I'd remove the battery and use power cord, but it's not got removable battery. Any ideas please?

I built a computer for my wife over the summer, and she gave me to me for my birthday. But, recently I've been having a number of blue screen problems when I play games. I've tried replacing my RAM, and had problems with one of the sticks the other one only showed 3 errors after 11 passes through Memtest, so it may be due to that.

I didn't know that CCleaner removed minidumps, so these are the only one's I can provide. I've had a number of errors from ntoskrnl.sys

First, disable driver verifier

Next, please run these tests and report back the results

I have experienced this problem for quite a while now with a lot of games;

I used to be able to play the following games just fine:
Gunz: the duel

and some other freetoplay games. they worked great and I enjoyed playing them.
Anyway, now, some years later, when I try to play any of those games I get the following Bluescreen stop error:
***STOP: ERROR 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0xB9DFCAE5, 0xB9C42B4C, 0x00000000)

this is what I tried to do so far:
cleaning my pc (wiping all the dust from fans and RAM that is)
uninstalling my videocard driver and installing again
scanning my pc with lots of software

Reinstalling windows fixed the problem for one of those games (gunz) but with the other ones i am still experiencing the same problem over and over, whatever i try...

I have uploaded the most recent minidumps. I hope you can help me.

oh right, my pc specifications:
2GHz pentium 4
GeForce Ti4200 (128MB I believe)

If you need to know anything else for you to help me please let me know

All the dumps crash at khips.sys, which belongs to Kerio Personal Firewall. I found the following thread that says there's a conflict with any game that uses GameGuard. The error is the same as yours, but I can't get the process from your dumps.

The last post is dated February 22, so there may not be an update available. You can always try a different firewall.

Hi. I'm new here but please help.. this is a weird problem & getting in the way of my work.

This is a new problem with the computer. My hard drive died & upon formatting the new one, this problem occurred.

64-bit Vista, high end comp.
I have 4 USB devices: a wireless network card, a mouse, a keyboard, and a midi piano.

The wireless network card works without any problems at all times but when I'm in Vista my mouse is very jittery and skips all over the screen. My keyboard lags and will occasionally freeze up and not read the input or freeze on a specific key & type that letter until it unfreezes a second later. When I'm playing my midi-usb piano it freezes up and plays strangely (it's basically the same problem for all 3 devices). My mouse is pretty much unusable.

What I found strange though is when I started up a game in full-screen, everything worked perfectly.

I have no viruses. I tried different devices, I tried unplugging certain devices. I tried disabling my anti-virus and restarting. The only thing that helps is if I play a game.

The problem: About a week a go my computer stopped connecting to all online games for apparently no reason (Wow, Steam, Sword of the New World). My internet works just fine, I can browse the web, stream video's, everything seems normal. But for any game it wont connect to the servers, the update servers, the news servers, nothing.

I have disabled my windows firewall, disabled my modem firewall, forwarded every port I could think of, checked all my internet settings about 20 times, checked for viruses, closed all unused programs... nothing.

My setup: I am running windows XP professional with sp3 installed. The wireless modem I am using is an SMC8014WG-SI cable modem. I am using a static IP address.

I've had a little search before posting, but didn't see anything exactly like my issue.

I have a Ienovo laptop. It's not ideal for games, but it has always run everything perfectly well when played on low settings (for new games at least. Old games worked fine on any settings)
I'd happily play with 35fps on most games. World of Warcraft would run on 20fps, but I'd never get any lag.
No lag at all.

And I had a happy gaming life.

Then a Windows update went wrong and became stuck in the eternal boot loop of doom. In the end I had to do a complete system restore and start again from scratch. This is where the trouble began. After reinstalling Windows 8 I found that I would get either huge lag spikes or just constant high latency.

Just to make clear, the laptop's hardware hasn't changed. This is not a hardware issue. Before the reinstall everything ran PERFECTLY. After the reinstall, it is near impossible to play games online. Even very processer light games struggle. I want to make this clear because people usually immediately say, "maybe your hardware isn't powerful enough". Before the reinstall I was getting an average of 50-100ms on World of Warcraft. Now I get around 1500-3000ms. Again, I have an Intel HD Graphic Driver (which sucks, I know) but clearly, it used to run the games well enough.

I upgraded to Windows 10 because I thought that it might help. My problems haven't improved and I still suffer huge lag.
