W7 and ThinkPad T400 ATI Radeon 3400 series driver

Q: W7 and ThinkPad T400 ATI Radeon 3400 series driver

I have a T400 which has the following two display adapters:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I tried downoading and installing this:

Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit - ThinkPad T400, R400, T500, W500

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

I went to the device manager, right-clicked on the ATI adapter and did Update Driver, and it did at first find a better match but said it couldn't be installed with the same error message from above (Code 10). Now, when I try to update the driver again, it says the best driver software is already installed.

Any ideas to fix this? Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello people,

It was really sad indeed, yesterday my laptop gpu died on me. I took the laptop apart today and there was some transparent oderless oil like substance on the card, that almost seemed to come from one of the (GPU) memory-chips or the thermalpad on it.

I don't know were the stuff could have leaked out of (memory-chips don't contain fluids as far as i know).

I'd like to have some advice. Since my budget is really low, I cant afford a new laptop of the same specs. I have like 100 euro's to spend and there is a only a very low margin. Right know the only option seems replacing, though I do know this is a difficult task for laptops.

I do know:
1 My GPU is not soldered on the mobo but is removable
2 There is a lot of stuff in my way, but the laptop can be taken apart really easy. I can take the card out with ease.

I did find this guide:
Planning to upgrade your Graphics Card? Read First...

But I had a look into it a few years back, and it seems to be really hard to know whether a replacement gpu would work on my mobo or not. I thought the 'standard' of these cards wasn't really standard and you had to make sure a card would fit or not? How would I know what card to order, if there are any? I'll have another look, but it doesn't seem like there is a helpful sticker anywhere on the board.

I could try heating the old one, since it is pretty dead anyway, but I have a feeling this will not work since there are chips on both sides and heating will certainly cause the ... Read more

I'm trying to install Windows XP SP3 as a dual boot on my Windows 7 laptop (Asus U33JC).

I'm following this tutorial:

Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP

The computer has a SATA hard drive (not supported by XP), so I need to create a Win XP setup disk with the correct drivers "slipstreamed". To do that I am following this:

SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD

I'm having no problems with the technical aspects, but I'm finding it impossible to find and identify the correct SATA driver. The chipset is an Intel 5 Series / 3400.

You'd think this would be trivial but I've spent hours on it! All I can find on the Intel or Asus websites are automatic utilities to identify and install drivers on systems with operating systems already installed, not the drivers themselves or any information about them. I did download one of those exe files and used 7-Zip to extract all of the drivers, but there is no way to figure out which is the correct one to use for XP and for that particular chipset. I thought I'd figured it out by a process of elimination by searching the .inf files, but it didn't work so I must have got the wrong driver. Googling just brings up hoards of fake driver download sites that link to what I presume are malware installations ("drivermax", "driveridentifier" etc).

I find it completely incredible that it is so difficult to obtain the driver or even information about what the correct one is!

I suggest that you upgrade XP SP2 to SP3 and then install all the post-SP3 high-priority updates before you worry about updating the ATI graphics driver.

Go into the Device Manager, then click the + in "Display Adapters", then double-click the ATI graphics device to open its properties window, then click the "Details" tab.

What's listed for driver date and driver version?

I normally have 2 VGA's but since the VGI port in the wall that connects to the projector is broken, I am forced to use S video for the projector instead.

When I try to connect the two monitors in the screen resolution window I am either given the option to use 1. The monitor or 2.the projector but it will not allow me to connect to both. Hi all,

I've recently upgraded my Toshiba A300D laptop to Windows 8 after changing to an SSD drive.

Everything is running great and really fast. However, I am having problems with running video files, youtube videos and games. The problem is that Toshiba do not provide good driver support and I am running the WDDM 1.1 graphic driver that comes with Win8. Some videos run good, but some just run... Games are not running as they used to be on Windows 7.
I cannot change it, I tried numerous times, but without any luck.

Can someone help me with this?

Sorry, but as far as I have been able to find out, there is no Win8 driver for any of the AMD chipsets older than the HD 5x series. I have one of the HD 4x series and even though my motherboard (Gigabyte) published Win8 drivers, the video drivers (for the onboard chipset) only offer the basic features. The advanced features that are available in Win7 are not there.

I installed windows 7 on my Dell studio 1535 yesterday, however I can't get the proper resolution for my samsung 23" monitor.

On Vista I had my 23 inch monitor hooked up to my laptop via DVI port and in Catalyst I'd turn off the main laptop screen, only using the 23' samsung for main. Now that I've installed windows 7 I can't run the 1920x1280 (the largest) resolution on my big screen, the maximum for it is 1280x768... I'm suspecting the driver isn't working well with Windows 7, and I've already downloaded 10.3 ATI drivers and they don't solve the problem either.

Basically I want to run the big resolution 1920x1280 on my screen. Please help me, it's very frustrating my video card is ATI Radeon 3400 HD.

Thank you in advance guys...

A:ATI Radeon 3400 Doesn't Work Well With Windows 7

Just a few tips, probably not going to fix your problems:

You have make the lcd monitor your one and only monitor to properly set your resolution. Also, make sure you're setting the resolution through the catalyst control panel and not the windows settings.

Make sure you downloaded the proper drivers. (Either 32 or 64 bit, PCIe or AGP, etc)

You can force your computer to display all modes, not just the compatible ones via

Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Display > Adjust Screen Resolution > Advanced Settings > Monitor Tab > Uncheck Hide Modes that this monitor cannot display

Note: The process above could possibly harm your monitor.

I just upgraded my video card from an Nvidia 7 Series to a Radeon 3400 series. I did a clean uninstall/reinstall for the drivers, double checked all my connections, and double checked my cables, but the card (With or without drivers) causes my screen to have a dull pink/purple tint over the whole thing, overriding even whites and blacks. It looks like I stained the whole monitor with Cherry Kool-Aid or something. I have it hooked up to a 37" 1080i HDTV via a built in VGA hookup (My previous card ran fine through this hookup).

The thing is, if I pull the VGA cord and put in an HDMI cord, it works fine. Now, my TV has limited input ports, and I'd rather reserve my HDMI ports for console gaming, and have the TV use the VGA ports. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem?

I knew about this problem going in to Windows 7, I figured ATI or Dell would have a fix for me by now but they don't. Wasn't a big deal until I got my new 23' 1900x1080 monitor. Now I am having this problem.

Since I got windows 7 its seems my ATI card has been on the fritz. I can't use Catalyst Control Center and when I play games they don't fill the screen on certain resolutions.

I recently got a new monitor and on its recommend resolution (1900x1080) it has about an inch black border around it. I've done some research and I believe I could solve this if I could open the Catalyst Control Center but I am unable to despite having tried to download multiple versions of the drivers.

I have a Dell Studio 15 if that makes any difference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Problems with Windows 7 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Graphics card.

What do the display properties report the resolution as? If it's whatever the maximum is, perhaps the pixels don't take up the whole screen area (unusual on a flat panel, but possible I guess).
If it's set at a lower resolution than the maximum resolution of the screen, look for a setting that will allow stretching of the display (as opposed to letterbox). Might look something like this:

P.S: I noticed you mention 1900x1080. Are you sure it's not 1920x1080 (1080p)? If not, could that be the reason for the extra black border?

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.
If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.
Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.
SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

A:Thinkpad T400 won't start just beep 1-3-3-1

If you tried both DIMM cards you have in the bottom slot, it sounds like tyhe system board, assuming they were seated correctly

Hello TechSpotians,

I have been thinking about gettin myself an upgrade for my PC. You may have seen many of my threads, and may have called me quick at changing my mind *looks at Leeky*
As the title states I would like to get myself a hd 6950 2GB. I have read something up on the future hd 7xxx series, and articles said that they would have more processing power and etc...
I have heard that AMD might be releasing some of the hd 7xxx series Q4 2011 and start mass manufacturing in Q2 2012. But as AMD starts the production of the office cards first and then up to the high end cards it might take a while.

So my question is, will it be worth the time to wait for the hd 7xxx series or just get the hd 6950?

EDIT: I don't think it is known if the 7xxx series will support CrossFire with the 6xxx series, but I heard that you can CF a 5xxx series with a 6xxx series. Is that true?

A:Wait for the Radeon HD 7xxx series or get the HD Radeon 6950 2GB?

i would get the 6950, thats a very powerful crd as of now with great driver support, even though the 7xxx series is coming out it usually takes like 2 -3 months for decent driver support and longer sometimes with crossfire support in games. as for the crossfire question, u can crossfire cards from the same generation so 5xxx series only crossfires with 5xxxseries and the same for 6xxx, my friend has a 4870x2 and was starting to lag a bit in BC2 so i got him a 4890 and we put those in crossfire, works much better. But yeah i would get the 6950 now and like u said the nice 7xxx series prob won;t be out til after CES in early 2012

I have a T400 ThinkPad upgraded to Windows 10 that suddenly had a blank screen and no lights except for wifi.On closer inspection I discovered the backlight is not lit during startup, whilst ThinkPad splash and window symbol are displayed but then, screen goes blank and then I hear the windows startup sound.Displays perfectly on an external monitor. I have replaced inverter, lcd cable and screen .... nothing works! I'm not sure if I should just resell the parts I bought and get another laptop .... can I transfer Windows 10 to another machine or is there another fix I could try? I don't have much money.Any help appreciated.

I put my Thinkpad T400 in hibernate, but next morning I could not boot. When I press the power button, the lights below the screen turning on and I hear the sound of the hard disk, and the turns off. I do not even see anything on the screen; it is just black. The process keeps on repeating in a loop, unless I press the power button to turn off. I have tried the static charge removing trick. I have also removed the hard disk put it back again, but did not work either.  Please help.

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... Hi everyone. I've a problem with mi Lenovo ThinkPad T400. The brightness is always at the minimum, and cannot be changed. But it is like when you close the laptop and the screens turns off, it is almost like that, I need a lantern to see what appears in the laptop, but besides that everything else works fine. If I connect it to an external monitor, then there is no problem, but you know, I don't wanna carry an external monitor with the laptop. Do you know how to deal with this? Thanks in advance!

It all started when I installed Win 7 after a Linux usage for a couple of months. First I thought it was uTorrent that screwed it up so I removed it but it still gave BSODs at least once a day. Haven't had the energy to do anything about it until now so now I'm asking you guys for advice how to get rid of it.
I have activated minidump in Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Setting in Startup and Recovery > Small memory dump (256KB) under System failure.
Got a BSOD a couple of minutes ago but I didn't get a minidump output from it.

Attached the four debug reports I got from SF Diagnostic Tool.

Appreciate any help I can get,

I have a IBM T400 Thinkpad win 7 32 bit pro OS and the taskbar just recently started flickering in "heartbeat" type of rhythm. I have updated the display drivers as the only solution I have been able to glean from this forum and the internet. The driver update has not worked to date.

I would appreciate any other suggestions to fix this issue

A:Flickering Taskbar IBM T400 Thinkpad Win 7 32bit pro

Is anything else flickering besides the taskbar?i also have a t400 but mine is running windows xp pro with no problems. it might be that the graphics or video cards have a problem or the laptop screen itself might be the culprit.you might want to have it checked out to see what the actual problem is and then go from there.
