I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can you remember if you did anything just before the problem started? Download/install a new program? Install Windows Updates? Change any computer settings? Go to a new website you've never visited before?

You can try using a restore point that goes back to before the problem started. Be aware that a system restore will also uninstall programs that were installed after the date of the selected restore point.

Hey all,

Been quite a while since I've posted here, but an odd problem has come up for me. Overall Windows 8 has been great and problem-free, but I'm stuck on this one.

For some reason, when I open the Run box, it says "This task will be created with administrative privileges" as if I had UAC turned off. But, I don't have UAC off (I have it on default).

The other thing, related to Revo Uninstaller, is, when I open Command Prompt in Admin mode, the default folder is set to Revo Uninstaller's program folder. And again, no UAC prompt when opening in admin mode either.

Here are some screenshots if I was hard to understand, lol.

What I am trying to understand is why UAC has suddenly been acting as if it's turned off (when it isn't) and admin command prompt opens in that folder.

Thanks guys for the help, I really appreciate it !

Lol, being the dumb person that I am, this problem was fixed simply by rebooting my computer. Thanks for the help anyways ! I know this is how all of you must feel right now :

Basically I was messing around in file types because my folder icons were botched. Ran TweakUI to fix folder icons, but here is what happened.

After I was poking around in there, double clicking a folder opened the search window. So i went into file types and created a new action, and pointed it at explorer.exe from my windows directory.

Now, the problem is, when i double click it opens the folder in a new window, instead of the same.

I when I am in the advanced settings of file types (tools-folder options-file types) the Edit and Remove buttons will not light up, but i am the administrator.

Restore defaults doesn't work.

Is there a backend way to fix this anyone knows of, short of reformatting ??

p.s. a system restore to a previous date did nothing.

Thanks in advance !!!

I'm having a little difficulty here. In succinct terms, whenever I double left click on a folder, it opens up a search window and not the actual window. Opening up "My Computer" and "Hard Drive" is not a problem. If I right click and choose explore or open, the file opens normally but at the moment, this is my only method of navigating my computer.

The problem seems to have occurred after I did some experimenting with Windowsblinds and Avedesk. Since then, I have been trying to sort it out but no luck. Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

Thank you for posting.
If the issue did not occur previously, please just try System Restore first.
I suspect this issue may be also related to the mouse settings. Please go to ?Control Panel\Hardware and Sound? and click ?Mouse? and check your mouse settings; please ensure that the left button is set to ?Click? and right button is ?Right-click?.
You may also click the Restore Defaults to reset the mouse settings.
If you use some other application to manage the mouse, please also check the settings or just remove it.

I am writing a VBA macro in Excel and have hit a wall. I am trying to get excel to open a command prompt and make it execute a command. The problem I am having is if I try to do anything but open another program, it throws an error back at me.

I can open the command prompt using:
Call Shell("cmd.exe" & dosCmd, vbNormalFocus)
I can also open Acrobat which is the program I need using:
Shell "C:\program files\adobe\acrobat 9.0\acrobat\acrobat.exe", vbNormalFocus
However if I simply wanted to open a PDF file, I have the code to that without opening a command prompt.

I need to open the PDF document on a specific page, and to my knowledge the only way to do this (apart from manually) is to use the command prompt. However I have no idea how to get VBA to put the command in the command prompt, hit enter and then close the prompt.

There are 2 commands that need to be executed in DOS (I'm not sure if there is a way to combine the commands)

They are:

cd c:\program files\adobe\acrobat 9.0\acrobat

start acrobat.exe /A "page=10=Open Actions" "M:\Full Scores\allegro.pdf
These open the pdf document called allegro on page 10.

I am completely stuck. Out of ideas. I've searched the length and breadth of the internet and can find nothing to point me in the right direction. So I was hoping one of you fine people could. Thank you so much, James

I have a strange problem that has been occurring since I very first installed Windows 7 x64 fresh. Whenever I click on the primary C drive in Explorer (or any other CD, card reader, or network mapped drive), sometimes 1 new window will open up, sometimes 2 new windows will open up, and sometimes 3 new windows will open up. The new windows usually, but not always, have an address bar. Explorer just seems to randomly open multiple windows at will.

I've been searching and searching online, trying various Tools->Folder Options as well as registry settings, but nothing seems to work. All I've found is a couple other forum posts with the same problem (random amount of multiple windows opening), but no resolutions.

This doesn't happen on any of my other Windows 7 x64 computers. The main difference I can think of is that this is the only machine I have with an SSD, but I can't see how that would effect all drives in Explorer.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to fix this? I would like no new windows at all to open up.

You could create a BAT file for this. Just type in the commands into a TXT file, then rename the file extension to BAT. When you run the BAT file it will run the commands in a command prompt automatically.

I deleted a file and I believe it was the wrong file and cannot remember what it was nor where it was. Now a DOS window opens on start-up. It says file not found.
Then goes to the system32 folder.

If I close the DOS window before the start-up finishes, then OS does not complete starting up. If I wait until start-up finishes, then the window just stays open and the system works normally, I can close window without errors.

How can I find out what is trying to open and causing this? Sure would like to reinstall whatever is going wrong.

Problem: A double-click on a folder in Windows Explorer FOLDER VIEW opens a new window.

I have scoured hundreds of forum postings on this very problem with 99% of proposed solutions not working for the poster. My sense of this is that the solutions offered focus on SHELL registry keys which deal with right click, not double click.

I think there is a vital registry key that handles double clicks in the folder view or folder pane that OVERRIDES the "folder options" setting "Open each folder in the same window".

Among many, I've tried the following, they change nothing (these are just a few examples):

Every once in a while my pc acts really nutty. What happens is that I'll go to open a program (lets say Nero Burning Rom) and on a single double click Nero will open up 70+ times. Furthermore, it makes mostly all of my programs act up when this starts happening. For example, when I click the arrow in the system tray it expands and collapses tons of times before it stops. If I open Firefox my homepage sort of half loads over and over and won't stop. MSN Messenger opens up then freaks out when I put the pointer in its window (this happens in the above Firefox example too). All of this activity makes the pc unusable until it all stops. Speaking of when it stops, it does't stop with a restart, it just stops mid session. I thought it could be a mouse problem because the trackball I use is pretty ancient and I figured it just might have just petered out finally, but then I tried another mouse that I found laying around and it did the same things. One other thing I've noticed it (the trackball) doing is when it's not being used the pointer slowly crawls towards the top of the screen. I've run my anti-virus and all three of my spyware programs and none of them find anything out of the ordinary. So what could be causing this annoyance? I'm starting to think it might be my mouse port, but how would I find this out?

Thanks in advance.

I was fiddling around with the folder options > file types a little bit to assign mp3s to winamp and WMP and so on...

I also checked out the file type "drive" and made no changes and clicked OK. Since then, whenever I double click the C drive or D drive, it opens a command window instead of opening the drive. I can right click on it and click Open in the menu though. But why should I have to do that? What has been changed? No, no virus. It only started doing this after I did the above. I anyway scanned the machine using SAV corporate version, nothing found.

I went back in and saw there are only two actions in the advanced section - 'find' and 'open command window here'. None is set as default, but apparently it's executing the 'open command window here' action on double click.

I thought of adding an "Open" action like for other file types, but it wants some program and the path to it to execute this action. What program does it use, I don't know.....please help.

When I double-click on a drive or folder, it opens it in another window, but explore in the same window if I right click then Explore.
Around the same time I noticed other problems, may be linked :
- I can't do anything in the account manager (there is the shield in front of the links like 'change my password and I can't use it and I can't open the parents contol in Configuration tools)
- In pictures directory, thumbnails appear then diseappear (to the default image icon)
- I experienced some problems copying folders.

My actions until now (some found in forums):
- Of course the option 'open in a single window' is selected (i deselected, applyed, reselected, rebooted ....)
- I tried to restore but it didn't work, may be the restoration point wasn't old enough, even i choosed the oldest one.
- I could create a new account on dos, to check if the problem would occure : it did :(
- I changed in regedit values HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/Directory/Shell default to none (idem for Folder and drive), It didn't work, I also tried 'open' or 'explore' but no change, I checked the explore/command but it looks ok, and I guess it is since the right click/Explore is working fine.
- I ran the command : regsvr32 /i shell32.dll, it din't change anything either.
- I checked my drives with updated anti-virus and anti-malware (Avira + spybot + malwarebyte) and also ran Ccleaner and others ...

Always in the past, with every flavor of Windows, when I double clicked on a filename in Windows Explorer, it opened it in the default app or one chosen by me via file association. Now, I get a Save As window. I now have to right click and select Open from the menu to open.

Something changed, and I did not do it, unless by unknown accident. How do I get back to the open on double click functionality?

A:In Win Explorer, double click now opens SAVE AS dialog

Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One) might be all you need; accept defaults, maybe add #s 26 & 27. Allow it to make both system restore point & registry backup just before doing repairs.

I came up to a problem that I cannot solve. Using the Explorer (not IE but the plain explorer to organize folders and files) I cannot change the behaviour of an Active Desktop like in WinXP or others.

I am very used to this procedure: single click = mark an object / doubleclick = execute an object.

Unfortunately, the Explorer just uses the option single click = execute. I remembered the option in XP/Vista, that you can go to Extras -> folder options -> Select Elements and tick a radio button for the Active Desktop method or the classic method (execute via doubleclick). Just as described in the tutorial "Single-Click or Double-Click to Open an Item" within this forum.

I tried this, and now I'm getting nuts: The radio button is already put on the classic mode (execute by doubleclick, select by single click). The other option is grey, i.e. it cannot be selected.

I guess, there's some tick wrong in the registry or else, but I cannot find out which. Does anyone has an idea what can be done?

A:folder options / single-click or double-click

The checkbox/radio button option is under the View tab in the same dialog.

I am looking for a macro command that will double-click on a cell, select the one below it, double click, move down, and so on... I need to double-click on the cell because I am importing dates from Microsoft Access and then I rum them thru a countif formula and Excel only reads the dates after they have been double-clicked.

If anyone has that command or know of another way that might work, I would greatly appreciate the help.

A:Excel Macro :: Double-Click command?

>> Excel only reads the dates after they have been double-clicked ...

>> ... another way that might work

My guess is the cells need reformatting (from text). Copy a blank cell with number format, select the dates range, Edit -- Paste Special -- Add -- OK.

You'll have to reformat the results date-style, but that's a one-swoop thing.

When I double click on the links of a certain webpage ( www.taobao.com), it opens a blank page, it's all white except for the words "done" at the status bar below.
This only happens with this particular page, not with other sites.

Thanks for your help

A:[SOLVED] Double click on a link and it opens an empty page

Please state Browser Version. Some sites are not compatible with all IE Versions. See if alternate browser works. Also, in IE after page shows "Done", hit the Reload button and see what happens.

First, I apologise, but this is a bit lengthy as I am not very familiar with windows (more a mac person), and I'm not sure what level of detail is necessary.

I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.

I have a feeling I may have done this to myself when I was trying to get rid of the spyware (or whatever it was) before I sucked it up and spent half my rent money on a new subscription to Norton...

When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.

I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions &... Read more

A:Solved: XP: folders don't open on double-click, search window opens instead.. help!

I got a reply on another forum, in case someone has the same problem and would like the solution:

Posted by Tufenuf:
Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shell32

If that doesn't correct the issue use this automated edit:

Search Opens When Double Clicking a Folder or Drive (Line 18)

To use the VBS File: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double-click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

Running regsvr32 /i shell32 worked for me
