My ThinkPad T400 won't boot!

Q: My ThinkPad T400 won't boot!

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this! I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G! What do I do?!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

have a look at your usb ports, there could be some sort of pins touching, as the result of damaged usb pins.

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

A:thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

How about uninstall your current Conexant driver and install custom Dolby driver from my signature link? It should help to boost a lot. In fact, T400 speakers are louder than other new T-series speaker.

Hi Punittiwari3353,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Best regards,

A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.

If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.

Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.

SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

Now, I suspect that the inverters are fine and I'm wondering about the LCD switch or LCD cable. I suppose I could just buy a cable, but before that, I wanted to take a step back and try to figure out if I'm overlooking anything. I recently replaced a bad LCD (the backlight was working at the time) with a new one. However, while the new screen works, it's backlight did not. I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. It all started when I installed Win 7 after a Linux usage for a couple of months. First I thought it was uTorrent that screwed it up so I removed it but it still gave BSODs at least once a day. Haven't had the energy to do anything about it until now so now I'm asking you guys for advice how to get rid of it.
I have activated minidump in Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Setting in Startup and Recovery > Small memory dump (256KB) under System failure.
Got a BSOD a couple of minutes ago but I didn't get a minidump output from it.

Attached the four debug reports I got from SF Diagnostic Tool.

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... Hi,

I have a T400 which has the following two display adapters:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I tried downoading and installing this:

Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit - ThinkPad T400, R400, T500, W500

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

I went to the device manager, right-clicked on the ATI adapter and did Update Driver, and it did at first find a better match but said it couldn't be installed with the same error message from above (Code 10). Now, when I try to update the driver again, it says... Read more

Hey, I apologize for any newbie mistakes I may be making here. I am pretty sure that my motherboard is toast, but to verify I thought I'd pick some brains. This all started about a month ago (also went with a non OEM battery at this point.) At first it started as my HDD light would not come on, or signal the HDD to boot correctly. Either way the screen was completely blank and remained that way until I found that I was able to just turn off completely and restart just fine. After about a week of this, I ended up just leaving the power settings to always on which worked great, but being a technician I couldn't leave it alone. It worked great for a few days, then back to the same issue. Now I get no response at all. I can feel the hard drive working and here it beep, but no light on the unit. I have tried every reset under the sun including pulling the CR2032 battery, ram, HDD... All components test just fine in other machines. This is my prized comptuter, and I hate to give it up. Hello, this is my first post. I've bought a used T400 recently, and it had a working bios when I bought it. Now that I have an SSD for it, I tried to install Fedora 26 on it. I put in the CD (that I verified on a different computer), selected it in the Boot menu (F12 on start up), then it goes to a black screen with with a blinking white purple, then it restarts after a about a minute and goes to the same black screen. I made a live USB, but that gave me the same result. I have read somewhere that such issue can be fixed if I disable secure boot, I don't see the option to disable secure boot. my BIOS version is 3.21, would updating it fix it? Also if I turn it on without charging cable, it says "0190: critical low-battery error", charging it for a while doesn't seem to fix it. (Battery indicator is orange and is flashing about 2 times a second). I was thinking that it might be the issue with the operating system that I'm installing, so I'm planning to try Debian tomorrow. Thanks,Alex

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad T20 Thinkpad Type 2647-92U from eBay for use this semester on campus. It is in great shape and has a recent edition of Windows XP but an older version of MS Office which does not boot properly.

This computer was a part of a network and keeps trying to connect to it each time Windows loads. It came with a LinkSys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter 2.4 GHz 802.11g card.

The CD is an official copy; clean and has no scratches or nicks. The DVD/CD-ROM will boot other CD's such as music CD's and DVD films and data discs with MS Word files etc on them.

Any help would be appreciated!

You might have damaged the power circuitry on the motherboard.  If that is the case, the only solution is to replace the board.  There is an array of power transistors that handles the switching back and forth between AC and battery.

Recently, I downloaded and installed a DVD Reader program on my IBM Thinkpad T23 laptop, model 2647-4MU. After using the DVD reader successfully, I uninstalled it due to it not being user friendly. After uninstalling, I ran Spybot and Norton Virus Scan to assure nothing was left over. All ran successfully. I then shut down the laptop as usual. The next day, it would not boot. I have tried several ways....with AC adapter, with battery only, with different memory, and all get the same results when I press the power on button......

- one beep, pause, three beeps, pause, three beeps, pause, one beep
- can hear the disk drive and cooling fan run, and the CD/DVD drive runs
- nothing at all on the display

IBM support says it is either a Memory or System Board problem. I have tried different memory with no success. Before I go to the expense of a new System Board, would like to see if anyone knows of any other tests or resets or other actions I might try. Is it possible I deleted something that would prevent a boot? If so, how would I go about restoring when I cannot even get a boot to DOS?

The Thinkpad is a T23 Model 2647-4MU, with 512Mb (two 256 sticks) memory, and Windows XP. I have not noticed any other problems with it before now.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

I have a friend's Thinkpad I Series that won't boot at all. Here are a few things that I do know that's wrong and what it is doing. First off, the battery is dead so I have to use the AC adapter. When I turn it on, the IBM Thinpad logo comes on the screen(well at least did a few times at first, now the screen is completely blank when I try to start it), it does nothing from there besides make some short bursts of grinding type noises. It does 2 sets of 4, then 5 and keeps on doing that. I did happen to be fortunate enough several times when I hit the F2 key during attempted startups and got into the startup configuration. Memory test was disabled and boot from a cd was enabled. I enabled the memory test and when I saved the settings, it tried to restart and I got a message saying the memory was good, but the CMOS battery was bad. I attempted to boot from a bootable CD which has it's own operating system on it, but it won't even boot from it. Would the CMOS battery being bad be causing all the trouble, or do you think it's the motherboard altogether? I appreciate any insight, thanks.

usually a bad cmos battery would not cause this sort of trouble. the cmos still holds all basic functions but can't remember anything you can set/change.
but its worth a try to get a new battery anyway, before digging into other causes.

I was having a problem with my T40 freezing up. I also was having difficulty booting the machine up (black screen). I was able to boot the machine long enough to format the drive from the hidden recovery partition however, now I cannot boot up at all. I have used compressed air to remove any dust from the machine and the fan is operating. The battery is good and until recently the laptop ran well. Can anyone help me boot this laptop up?

hello all, recently I attempted making a bootable usb from a floppy image to update my bios, as I don't have windows or a floppy drive. After i set it all up, I started the Thinkpad, pressed F12 to get boot devices, selected "Verbatim Store'n go"(my usb drive), and pressed enter. Next thing I saw was an error about "could not read system configuration" or something and then black screen. Now it won't boot and If i press F1 or F12 the messages appear saying "Entering IBM setup" or "Preparing Boot devices", but nothing happens. And If I leave it alone, nothing happens. I tried holding F1 and pressing power like another thread on this site mentions and it gets me in to the bios. I restored default settings, but it didn't help. I also tried disabling USB-boot, I still get nothing but the IBM bootscreen.

A:Thinkpad T40 won't boot

hm. it decided to run a memory check and fixed itself. still, does anyone know how the usb stick could do this or what the error about System configuration was? I am going to make a new thread asking about making the usb correctly.

This computer belongs to my cousin. I have worked on it before when she had problems with the not getting on internet etc. This time she had a fan error and it was shutting down. I looked on line and see where the heatsink and fan can be changed fairly easily, so I have done that. Now the IBM screen comes on and then it seems like it's going to go on into windows but suddenly shuts down.
I don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions are welcomed.

My brother had his IBM Thinkpad R51 charging overnight the other night. He had used it before he went to bed and it was functioning normally. However, when he returned from work the next day, his machine would not power on. Not even so much as the normal indicator light when the AC adapter is plugged in. External and internal inspection show no obvious signs of any issues, and he had done nothing leading up to this that should have caused such a problem. After some research on other Thinkpad models having issues with overcharged capacitors, I followed their instructions to discharge the capacitors with the power button. Didn't work......... the motherboard does not appear to be getting power.

So I guess the real question is.... what the heck is the matter with it????

Thanks in advance,

Patrick

This is a bit of a hail mary, but I thought I would try as this forum has been far more helpful than lenovo tech support ever will be, my thanks in advance. I have a P50 Thinkpad, Win7 64 bit. Recently my charging circuit and charger bit the dust and lenovo onsite fixed it the next day with a new mother board. He ran a host of updates and bios updates and a few days later when I got back in off the road I tried using external monitors and had intermittant issues at best. I tried running some critical updates and on reboot now I can't even get my machine fully booted. What happens: Upon startup it gets stuck at the windows screen, "Starting Windows", freezes, never loadsUsing last known good configuration, same as aboveUsing repair, startup in safe mode or any of those variations, it gets stuck at loading files, just after this file "CLASSPNP.sys" Lenovo says they can't send me a recovery disk as win7 only comes in CD form, yet the newer thinkpads don't even have CD players. They said even despite the fact that I paid for windows 10, and a downgrade fee to get win7 pre-installed I don't have the rights to it. (Total BS btw just don't have the patience to argue this one). I feel totally helpless and this is my last straw with Lenovo; this whole if it passes a hardware diagnostic it's out of their hands. I realize they don't write the software, but a computer isn't a computer without software, it's half of what they are selling you. Any suggestions ... Read more

Hi, I have 2 770s, one of which works fine. The other is the exact same spec, but although it's set to boot from CDrom (well... DVD), it just won't do it. I can't boot from floppy, cos the machine doesn't have one, and it won't recognize the CD drive from DOS (I just get invalid drive message).

The DOS seems to have only command.com, with no drivers, I can't update DOS to add a CD driver because I would need either a floppy or a CD to do it

Since both of my 770s are identical spec, I am considering mirroring the HDD of the working one to the HDD of the other.

Does anyone know how to do this? Is there some cable I can buy to connect the 2? (Remember, networking them is no good, cos one of them has no O/S).

I've tried searching IBM support with no luck.

Any help/suggestions much appreciated

After setting up the time and date you have to turn off the machine and turn it on again. Doesn't that work?

OS is Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, 500GByte Hitachi HD. The notebook has been running fine. Today, prior to going to class, the pointer froze on the screen. Eventually, the only way I was able to shut the notebook off was by holding the start button down.

Upon returning from class I was unable to boot up; not even the logo screen displayed. Unable to get into safe mode as well. Additionally, I put the W7 Pro DVD into the drive hoping it would boot the computer, but still nothing. This really has me perplexed.

As I am fully dependent on this notebook for my work, any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Insert your Windows 7 CD into your Laptop and press whatever Function Key is required (Should say when your Manufacturers Logo appearscould be F2/F10) to access your Boot Menu, then select your CD Rom so you computer will then boot from the CD.

If this does not work then try going into Setup, usually F10, F2 Or Delete and set your CD Rom as the device first booted by your PC.

Once you have booted from your CD select your Operating System, click Repair then try and do a System Restore.

Computer  was working.fine, did a reboot and now has 'To interrupt normal startup press enter' displayed on the top right. If I let it continue it shows blue screen with unexpected error occurred,  error 0000225, I try to enter recovery with F1 and it just reloads back to the same recovery screen. I've tried with a windows 10 and windows 8.1 install same results.  If I plug the drive into my desktop I can see all my files no problem.  I bought a new SSD and when I try to install Windows the logo comes up but after some time, maybe a minute, it drops to recovery again and says the bios is not fully ACPI compliant, error 0000225 and stops. I've tried disconnecting the bios battery for about 15 minutes and tried again with no luck, same result on new ssd and install.  I'm lost a this point, any ideas? I'm going to try a Bios CD updated tomorrow but I dont have much hope. Cannot get to a command prompt or anything... Video link https://www.dropbox.com/s/s27pnnk38ta43kt/pc.url?dl=0

I bought the laptop bare, no H/D, 8MB RAM (Basic) no expanded, no floppy (external), no battery module. The problem was an error 08613 at booting and freeze, I found it to be related to the pin tracker in the centre of the keyboard, I disconnected the cable to the pin and the error disappeared, on the process I pull out the CMOS battery to check out the 3 volts, and found it ok. Now has the following errors, 00173 (Config data lost...), 00163 (time and date, the battery pulling) and 08611 (Sys bus error, I/F...). The problem is that because the green screen with the numbers (and a bird pic on right) are frozen I cannot proceed to fix time/date, the setup menu does not come up. Keyboard and external mouse that I fit at the back won't work. I heard somewhere that is possible to access the computer via a port replicator so I bought one (is on the way), any ideas?. Thanks in advance. Ric

I have an IBM thinkpad t42 and it will not boot, I tried f8 to get safe mode to display with no luck, tried remove battery. , I always get the the same screen with just a blinking cursor in the top left screen and I do not get passed that, any ideas?

Typical fix for this on non-OEM system would be to run the fixmbr command from the XP Recovery Console.

Since your system is an OEM system...I'd suggest following the advice at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-62979 .
