No sound on midi files

Q: No sound on midi files

No sound on MIDI files. Sound on other formats. Win Media player or IrfanView or vanBasco all indicates file is playing. I think I lost sound when I was cleaning out junk from system. OS Win98se.

Preferred Solution: No sound on midi files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: No sound on midi files

Hi moldy811, and welcome to TSG.

Double check your volume / sound mixer control panel settings. Make sure that the "SW Synth" channel is not muted and that the volume control slider is not all the way down.

If the settings look OK then double check the System Control Panel / Device manager to see if there are any warning symbols for the sound controller.

I've always had music I could send with my Ecards from WebShots and I can no longer see where the sound function is located. The help section says you need MIDI sound files but I have not had this problem before sending sound and I can no longer see the sound listing at all. I am running XP Pro.

Thank you for any ideas,

When I play MIDI files, there's no sound. There's no error message or anything. In control panel, under Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio, Default MIDI Playback is blank. When I select "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" and click apply/ok, it turns back to blank when I open Sounds and Audio Devices again.

I can play MIDI files in quicktime, but only if I select "Quicktime Music Synthesizer" as the Default Music Synthesizer. If I select "General MIDI", there's no sound again when I play it.

I've recently purchased a new pc with Vista Home Premium installed.

There appears to be a lot of information on the web and this site about midi problems with Vista. They all seem to mention problems with external equipment.

My question is, what do I need to do to my pc to play midi files through the inbuilt sound card.

When I attempt this, I get an error saying No hardware installed or is not responding.

I can play all other type of media files ok.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Any suggesting on what i could maybe download for free or up to $20 from Cakewalk or Magix. All i want is something basic. I did pick up something called Midi studio (Magix) at best buy for $10 a few years ago after XP was released but this software i'm assuming was copywrited in 2001 before the release of xp. the system requirements for this software are as follows:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000. Computer: Pentium with 200Mhz minimum, 32 MB (64 MB) minimum, 100 MB free disk space minimum, resolution 800 x 600 with 16 bit High-Color 16 bit sound card, CD-ROM drive. Microsoft mouse or compatible, DirectX 6.1

Is this something that would be safe to install on my computer or should i should for something else?

I have several simple websites with MIDI sounds. I made these in MS Publisher.
I cannot get sounds from the websites nor from web preview of Publisher file.
I have checked IE 8 settings under tools/internet tools/advanced/mulimedia/playsounds is checked. The MIDI files on my computer play fine. I do have a website with .wav sound and it works fine. I am assuming the problem is with some setting in IE8 (the web preview in Publisher uses IE to give the preview).

This is recent problem-worked fine last month and another computer (Win2K) can access the sites with sound so the problem is with this one running Win7 and IE8.
Thanks much!
More info:Normally, the IE8 opens up as basic (I assume 32 bit) and the MIDI sounds on the websites are not heard. I opened up IE8 64 bit and everything works fine-all MIDIs etc sound OK.
The settings for both IE8 look the same.
Now my question is now: How do I change things for the basic IE8 to work. Since the Publisher file opens with the 32 then it also does not work. The basic IE 8 on my computer is described as version 8.0.7600.16385,Cipher Strenght:256 bit. The 64 bit version is listed as same version and cipher-- but 64 bit.

Just about finished refurbishing a Presario 5000. Tougher than a nut this oneís been in a couple of ways. Understand now why some would call it a Pre-sorry-o. Anyway, my last headache is that it will not play MIDI files. That is, no sound comes out of the squeakers.

Mobo: CUW-AM Rev 2.02 with integrated audio and video. Chipset is Intel 810 and Socket number is 370.

S/W: Windows 98 SE, Media Player 9, DirectX 9, IE6. DXdiag DOES produce both WAV and MIDI sound but no other application will play dot-MID files.

Driver now in use is for a Crystal ACí97 PCI card. Found it in PV4026.ZIP after many frustrating hours on the net.

I obviously donít know sqaut-all about sound generation. Would sure appreciate it if somebody out there can point me in the right directionÖ

I just finished using the virus boards here to eliminate a virus. During the course of the virus, but before I got help here, all my sound, except for my MIDI files, has been turned off. The virus board referred me to this board for help with this specific problem.

I know that nothing is muted, I have already checked that. Another example, I can play a WAV or MP3 in winamp, and I can clearly see the file is playing, but there is no sound. Same for games, etc. The only sound files I can play are MIDI files. The only reason I can think that this might happen is because months ago, I installed a Yamaha program for enhancing MIDIs, and maybe they are controlled only by that program which somehow escaped damage.
I think my sound card is a Realtek HD Audio. I am running Windows XP.

Thanks for your help.

I just got a new sound card (Creative Sound Blaster 16 PCI).
It works perfectly fine for MP3 but it doesn't work very well with an Application called Guitar Pro 4 which uses the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth for MIDI music playback (it can use the ESS 1969 FM Synthesizer which came w/ the sound card but I have to speakers louder and it makes kind of a squeaky sound)

I have a digital audio workstation and I use midi devices with my system. Besides, it's a good way to link sound devices across systems into a single coordinated work station. Problem I'm finding though is that almost all new sound cards I've looked at no longer seem to support midi. And then there's the whole question as to whether or not they'd even work with Win 7.

I have a Creative Sound Blaster Live! with Live Drive that's several years old, that I wish I could get to work with Win 7, but I've had zero luck so far.

My main requirement in a sound card, besides being midi capable, is that it is quiet. No detectable line noise, that is. 24/96 capable is a big plus. Oh, it also must be PCI, not PCI express.

Got any suggestions?

Hi john webb, and welcome to TSG.

Some more information may be needed before anyone here has a chance of helping out.

1) What is your operating system?

2) Are you trying to download the file using your web browser, if so exactly what web browser are you using?

3) Does the web browser allow you to play the midi file instead of downloading and saving it?

4) Can you download and save any other types of files without any problems?

5) Does this only happen on one particular web site or do you have the same problem with any midi file on any web site?

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum but my question doesn't seem to fit anywhere else really.
My question basically is, are there a number of different sub-formats that come under the 'MIDI' umbrella and if so is there a way to identify them.
Basically, I have a lot of midi files on my computer that I want to put on my Sharp GX10 mobile phone. they all work fine on the PC, but on the phone very many of them don't work at all. The phone recognises them as midi files, tries to play them, and just produces silence.
When on my PC, there seems to be absolutely no way to distinguish between a compatible and incompatible midi file for the phone. I can't just download them and see which work by trial and error, because I've been uploading them to my webspace and downloading them by WAP which is quite costly when they end up not working.

Do you receive an error message? If so, please provide it.

Also, go to event viewer & send information from any error events noted when you the problem occurs.

start > run
delete the contents of the long, skinny, white box
type: eventvwr.exe
left click "ok"
Maximize the screen.
On the left, left click on "applications"
On the right, look for errors
Right click an error.
Note the event ID, source & description

Hi. Sporting Windows XP Pro w/ SP3. I'm wondering if it's possible to change the default MIDI soundfont (if it is a soundfont), to a more high-end soundfont. I was tinkering around with some Creative software that gave me the idea that I could do that, though I haven't had much luck with my google searches. I don't seem to know the terminology to be specific enough to find what I'd like, so I'm hoping some human interaction can help me get there.

I was hoping the process might be something like:

Start -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices (or Audio HQ) -> Properties -> Browse -> Cool Soundfont pack.sf2 -> OK.

So when I swap and upgrade my soundfont pack for this generic "MIDI" sound, my various MIDI programs will play with the new and improved soundfont. Is this possible? I thought I had it, but it doesn't seem to have worked.

Audio HQ was the piece tied to Creative that I tinkered with and thought I upgraded, and I'm hoping to produce an improved effect on PTE.exe, a MIDI playing guitar tablature program. I don't know if it's program specific or if I can just adjust it through windows. I'm hoping the latter, as the former doesn't seem possible.

Is this the right forum for this? Please move me if it isn't. Thanks.

A:Can XP users change their default MIDI sound?

So I've gotten closer to my goal, and would like to share what I know, and perhaps clarify what I don't. So here goes.

This post is going to be part tutorial and part research. I have successfully upgraded my MIDI patch, though I do not know all the details encompassing the process, such as how it may vary for different OSs or sound cards. My impression is that it is soundcard-specific, so I should mention that this process is for Creative Audigy soundcards. And ultimately what I'd like to get out of this post, aside from helping others be able to update their MIDI sound font, is maybe a list of higher end soundfonts that can replace what I understand to be the stock MIDI sound. So let's begin the process (and do so by assuming you have the same sound card as me, for again, I don't know any other method):

First, select Start -> Control Panel -> Audio HQ

Then double click the Sound Font icon.

And in this panel is where we do our manipulations. Perhaps the first thing you want to check out is the Options tab. Under SoundFont Device, in my case, I have SB Audigy Synth A and B [9000], and they seem to have equivalent setups, and I can adjust each one individually.

Also here, you can control how much RAM you dedicate to processing the synth font. Selecting "too much" does not waste the memory. It will be used by other processes as necessary, but ensures you have enough to not slow down the production of sound.

Next, we go back to the first ... Read more

Windows XP Home with SB Audigy sound card. System has worked fine for 10 months until today. Have lost all sound except for .mid files which play fine. No .wav files (consequently no system sound events audio), no MP3 or CD audio. AVI files play video without the audio. No conflicts in device manager and sound card is listed. Reinstalled audio drivers from SB disk to no avail. Tried several System Restore points going back five days and no help. Windows audio is turned on in system services. I have followed every step in the Help Center troubleshooting guide to no avail. Volume is up and no mute boxes are on. Have tried both WMP and the SB audio players. Both will play the .mid files but nothing else. Files seem to be playing and progress bar advances but no sound. Any ideas short of a reinstall? Could the sound card be defective even though it is detected and indicated as working properly?

Check your volume control to be sure that that SW Synth (or similar) volume is enabled and turned up. It is a different volume control than that used by other sounds.

In the Control Panel, Under Sounds and Audio Devices, Audio tab, be sure that "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" is chosen under MIDI Playback.

You might also try going to Start > Run and typing:
Click OK.

Click each tab to see if damaged or missing files are listed in the lower window.

Under the Music tab of the interface that appears, in the box for what port to use for testing, choose "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth [Emulated]" and then click the "Test Direct Music" button to see if it plays.

it's freeware and claims to work with windows 7.

good luck!

I've been in contact with MS Support, about that in the Win7 Sound panel there is no longer the ability to change MIDI Port from the internal GS Wavetable synth, and got confirmed that they've removed this, both for Vista and Win7

"The ability to choose a different hardware or software MIDI synthesizer other than the default Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth has been removed from the user interface for audio configuration in Windows Vista/Windows 7. A different output MIDI synth or output device port can be selected only by editing the registry".

I really want to select the MPU-401 compatible MIDI Port, so I can make use of my old Roland MT-32 and the old Sierra games through DOS-Box

Does anyone know how to do / already done this?

I don't know why MS removed this setting, I can imagine that many musicians will get very angry when they wont be able to change this easily...

My midi hardware it working nice in my DAW home studio but today I noticed that I do not have the ability to change the default midi out device in Windows 7. After googling around it seems that this was also the case in Windows Vista. But luckily there are options to configure the default out device!
The first that I found was the Windows Vista MIDI Mapper control panel and minutes later the Vista MIDI fix. The control panel application fixed my problem but only lists hardware midi stuff like my MIDI USB keyboards and the hardware midi output of my Creative card as the Vista MIDI fix application lists more midi out options but I haven' not tested those yet.
Both applications run without any problems here on my Windows 7 RC x64 installation.
