Laptop switches on, begins to start up, switches off then repeats process

Q: Laptop switches on, begins to start up, switches off then repeats process

Hi,
Today when I switched on my computer it began to start up (barely staying on for five seconds) before switching off and repeating the whole process. It does stay on long enough for me to push either esc or f10 and go into computer set up. However i am not too sure what to configure and how and as soon as i exit out of it, my laptop starts the whole on/off process again.

I am not too sure about the specs of my laptop, only that it is an Hp and has windows xp.
Please, what can i do? I would be forever grateful if someone knows how I can fix this..

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Laptop switches on, begins to start up, switches off then repeats process

If you can post the model of the HP laptop, we can learn more for you.
You should find the model information on a sticker on the bottom of the machine.

It sounds like ESC or f10 will take you to the BIOS configuration utility.
Have you tried f8? You may need to press repeatedly, or press and hold.
This will take you to the option to boot to Safe Mode.
If this is successful, let us know. If not, let us know.

Next... you obviously have internet access from another computer.
There are two utilities you should download and run.
These utilities will check for errors in 1) your memory and 2) your drive.
Since they run outside of windows, trying to run them will give us a good idea if it is a hardware issue, or if it is a problem with your OS. (the f8 question may leave this an open question, but this will help get a definite answer, in addition to trying to isolate hardware faults)

To Test Memory... Using Memtest Please follow this guide...

Please note that (unless you start getting errors reported) you will need to let this run a long time.
A good way of doing this is to let it run over night. In each 'pass" there are a series of eight memory tests that are run, each more complicated than the previous. We used to advise letting it run a minimum of 7 passes, unless you start getting errors. We now advise at least 10 full passes. If you have errors reported, you may want to re-run the test with only one stick of ram installed, checked each stick until you isolate those that are faulty. That way you can limit your replacement to those that actually need it.

Also, I would like for you to run some hard-drive diagnostics, but I need to know more in order to point you to the right tools to download.
I may or may not be able to find out your drive maker from the model information you supply about your laptop.
Sometimes that information may be found in your Bios (bios sometimes detects it).
I will tell you how to determine your drive maker this way, after you tell me more about your laptop.

If I / we cannot determine the drive maker another way, we may need to have you open your drive bay cover.
Is the machine out of warranty? If not, for you to do this next step would void your warranty.
Are you comfortable opening the machine?
Do you understand the hazards of static electricity and know how to avoid damaging your computer with static?
Depending on your answers, I may have additional steps for you before we have you download your drive diagnostics.

If there's nothing on the laptop you need saved I would run the System Recovery to restore the laptop back to the factory image. If you have or have made the Acer Recovery Discs then you can run those otherwise you can try running the recovery from the hard drive by pressing ALT and F10 during the Acer splash screen.

My laptop, Windows XP, needs its antivirus renewing as I have had a pop up alert that says 'Your computer is at risk, click the balloon to fix', and a window appears, 'Windows Live One Care'. The bar starts to fill up, the horizontal bar with green dots, but just goes on forever and then disappears, no conclusion. When I click on START (trying to access my control panel) nothing happens. Nothing happens when I click on anything.

A:My laptop switches on but wont start

Hi ustane

Were you happy with the Windows Live One Care program? It has been discontinued by Microsoft, and replaced by their newer, free antimalware software known as Microsoft Security Essentials. If you want to try the newer software, I think a reasonable try for a quick fix would be to:
1) Use another computer to download the Microsoft Security Essentials installation file, and copy it onto a CD or a USB key.
2) On your computer, boot into Safe Mode (To do this, start tapping the F8 key as your computer is powering on - until you see the Safe Mode menu. Then select simply "Safe Mode" from the list).
3) Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs ... and uninstall Windows Live One Care.
-----If the program will not uninstall in Safe Mode, in the Start/Run box, type msconfig and in the Startup tab, remove the checkmarks from startup processes belonging to Windows Live One Care.
4) Remove any ethernet connections from your PC (unplug ethernet cable - or disable your PC's wireless device).
5) Reboot. Remain disconnected from the Internet and from any networks.
6) If Windows Live One Care did not uninstall in Safe Mode, now uninstall it in normal mode, using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Remain disconnected fron the Internet and from any networks.
7) Install Microsoft Security Essentials (or any other good antivirus product -- I happen to like the free home version of avast! antivirus).
8) Run a full system antivirus scan on... Read more

This problem seems fixed but I don't know why and it bugs me.

I built a new computer at the start of last month based on a core i7 930. I loaded Windows 7 64bit with no problems and left the system running overnight doing some stress tests. In the morning things were still fine so I loaded up some app's and used the computer for about 3 hours without trouble. The problem came when I tried a restart where the PC got as far as the starting windows screen then switched off. No BSOD no errors just off. At first I thought I had a hardware fault but after reloading windows the problem went away.
To cut a long story short I eventualy found that the problem only happened after installing Photo Shop Elements 8 and it happened every time. Later I discovered the same thing happened after installing my HP Scanjet G3110.
As I said at the start the problem is now gone but the only thing that changed was that I installed a printer on the system for the first time. Now when it gets to the point in the boot process where it would switch off it now checks the printer and carries on as normal. This bugs me as I can't see why installing a printer should have any effect and will the problem come back when I have important stuff loaded. Any ideas ?

If you are saying that the BIOS is checking the device, that would be normal. What happens when the printer is off-line during boot?

Alright, this problem has been plaguing me for quite some time. I have a pc which continues to switch off every time i try to enter windows xp. It cant make it passed the initial loading screen, the bar moves across about twice and then switches off the pc. No restart, just plain off. I've reset the ram, changed positions, swapped them around left one out while the other in. Reinstalled windows. Tried a new power supply. Bought a new harddrive. Reset the bios. Disconnected all other peripheral hardware and cdroms. The pc can start up and get into safe mode and can remain in safe mode for what seems indefinitely. I used to be able to enter safe mode and then restart and enter windows like that, but that has ceased working. I have no idea of what else may be the issue. Short of buying a new motherboard? Perhaps the power button is failing? But that doesnt make sense since the pc remains on when the harddrives are disconnected. I've tried switching sata ports and even power cables. Nothing is working.

The specs:
abit nf-m25v
amd 42OO
2gb (1gig sticks) apogee ddr2 8OO
1tb sata samsung hdd
25Ogb sata seagate hdd
35Owatt powersupply

A:Pc switches off while at windows xp start up screen

you said it can remain in safe mode - could it before you replaced the hard drive? and are you saying that you can no longer enter safe mode now? Anyway have you thought of testing the memory, download memtest as a .iso and burn to a cd. re power supply you will need more expert help than myself to see if a 350 watt is the correct power for your pc.

Hi all,
We had a power outage today. The computer is behind an Eaton Powerware UPS so everything should have been fine - but no.
The UPS seems to have done its job of delivering power to the computer (it was beeping every 5 seconds like it should when delivering power). But the computer went off. Now it wont turn on - or at least it turns on for a second then goes off. Then goes on and off about 2 or 3 times. Pressing the on button after its done this does nothing. While its trying to start the fans work. Ive pulled and reseated all the power supply plugs and RAM.
Unplugging the drives from the PSU makes no difference.
If I unplug the motherboard from the power supply both fans start and continue to run.
I'm thinking Motherboard short? (Gigabyte GA-965P-S3)
Or its the power supply (Zalman ZM500-HP) which replaced the original Antec one that came with the case (Sonata 2).
What are your thoughts?
WinXP 2gig RAM (Corsair) 2HDs in RAID Core2 Quad. About 5 years old. The power supply is about 3 years old.
I cant post full specs 'cos it wont start :-(
Thanks
Tandanus

A:Solved: Tries to start but switches off - after power outage

Power outages sometimes corrupt the CMOS memory. To reset it, locate the two pins labeled "CLR_CMOS" near the battery, and momentarily short them together while the computer power is OFF.

Resetting the CMOS returns the BIOS settings to default, so you will need to re-enable RAID and any other settings you had modified before.

Whenever I'm playing high performance games my laptop switches itself off.

All the signs point to overheating, but I think it's something else. Firstly, I can switch my laptop off immediately after this happens with no obvious ill effects. My laptop actually has overheated before and I couldn't switch it on for a good 30 minutes afterwards.

Secondly, the switching off seems to happen somewhat randomly. On Saturday, my laptop switched itself off at least 5 times, however the next day, I played Team Fortress 2 for 3 hours straight without any problems, and my laptop was a fair bit hotter during the 3 hour session than it ever was during the LAN Party. Today it's switching off even more frequently, I can't even get 30 minutes of gaming in without this happening. Outside of high performance games, my laptop is perfectly fine.

A:My laptop randomly switches off.

Welcome to TSF.

I would look into other possibilities of the random restarts. It doesn't look like a malware related issue. Have you ran a memory check yet? Google for memtest and use that tool to run a memory test.

There are probably malware that may cause this kind of issue, but I'm leaning more towards a hardware related issue. Try posting in the hardware board for more help.

Hi,Attempt to perform a hard reset to remove all the excess static using: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768after this step, i  recommend checking the wall outlet, the light on the charger port (ensure it isn't blinking), attempt to boot to bios using F10 while the pc is restarted, if the issue persists, contact HP on 1800-474-6836 in order to get a repair setup as you could be looking at a motherboard failure.

Been doing a bit of research on how I can remotely shut down or disable my Laptop computer if it gets stolen or something else happens (kinda like what a de-mobiliser in a car does). I'm thinking, just how can I use this on my laptop? Could there be other means of remotely disabling my computer if I want to? Any help on answering these questions would be greatly appreciated. Hello

My battery is dead(had it for 3 years at this stage nearly) but as I am flat broke at the minute what I have been doing is just ignoring the battery and just keeping the laptop connected to the charger (a replacement charger I got, model number PA-1900-05)

There was no problem until last night when the labtop suddenly shut down. I am not sure what the issue is, also when i tested it by taking out the battery the laptop shut down straight away.

The laptop seems to work ok so long as the labtop is on a table but I am not sure how long this will last.

Hi,
My Dell Inspiron 15R 5520 laptop switches off at completely random times. I've given it for service 3 times and the frustating part is during their testing, it works completely fine so the repair guy can't figure out the problem.
After it switches off, it doesn't boot for a while and just gives black screen and a bunch off beeps. ( 7 of them at intervals)

I did a diagnostic and got a CPU fan error 2000-0511 Validation 130122.

Please let me know what is this issue and how to solve this.
Regards,

A:Laptop switches off randomly

Sounds like the CPU fan is not working -- leading to overheating and shutdown.  Start by replacing the fan:
<<www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=14456>>(the fan is different depending on whether the system has Intel or AMD video).
If that doesn't solve the problem, the mainboard is the next possible suspect.

Hi Abhi94
The issue could relate to a few factors.
1. A loose battery connection to the motherboard.2. The battery housing gone loose. Or3. Power adapter port fault.
To understand the source you will need to look through the following details,
1. Is there any damage on the machine or the adapter? 2. Are you using the original Dell adapter? 3. Please check the status of adapter in BIOS and verify it charges the battery. Check if wiggling the adapter cable changes the status in BIOS. Attempt this while ensuring adapter is not disconnected.4. Please check on the battery health status in BIOS. 5. Please run the onboard diagnostics to understand if there is any failure. Press and hold Fn key and power up the machine.
Try reseating the connection of the battery and try a known working adapter. Please provide the exact system model or click on my User name and private message the service tag along with your contact details. I will be able to provide more related information based on the system model.
If the machine is out of warranty, you may obtain help at http://dell.to/2r7MQXN.

Hiya

Lets rule out any dodgy files running on there that may be causing this:

go to http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Also, what are you doing at the time it shuts down? What I mean is, are you using a certain type of application, or just wandered off and it happens?

Hi,

I have a 2 months old Toshiba Satellite laptop with windows 7. I tend to leave it plugged into the power socket when I leave home, when I return I find it started up !!!

It is just doing nothing, I just can see the adobe acrobat baloon asking me to install an update in the taskbar.

This happened twice. I have the wake up modem options disabled in the BIOS setting.

Any recommendations to why this is occuring?

A:Help-My Toshiba satellite laptop switches on alone !

You may wish to go into your power configuration settings and turn off other Wake On... settings.

Go into device manager and go through your various network components and any other devices you don't wish to be able to wake your computer (hard drive, etc). Leave your keyboard & mouse on unless you wish to use the power button to wake.

Start > Control Panel (All Items) > Device Manager

Right Click Each Item, Click Properties

Go to the Power Management Tab & Turn off "Allow this device to wake the computer"

From what I can tell, it looks like your ethernet/wireless is detecting an incoming/outgoing connection and waking itself in order to deal w/ that connection. If you want a simpler solution, just turn off automatic updates in Adobe & whatever else tends to wake your computer.

This is the same laptop that was causing problems way back in October 2003 (http://forums.techguy.org/t175403.html). To summarize briefly, I got it working again by removing one of the two RAM chips which was kaput and later installing another. Recently, however, the same machine has begun misbehaving again -- it switches off randomly. This is not hibernation or standby; the only way to get it going is the reboot.

After searching the interweb for a solution, I figured the closest answer was probably overheating: the fan did seem to be on a lot of the time. We purchased a cooling pad which certainly put paid to any heat issues -- and made life a lot quieter -- but the laptop is still randomly shutting off.

It doesn't seem to be linked to memory load -- it will fail while it is just idling -- and there doesn't seem to be any pattern to the problem: it will go days without going belly up and then fail twice in 30 mintes.

It has a firewall, anti-spyware and is anti-virus protected so I'm pretty sure this is not mal-ware related. All the relevant Windoze XP updates have been done. I even increased the size of the partition to make sure it wasn't a pagefile problem.

My next likely candidate is faulty RAM: either the chip that survived 2003's accident has finally begun to lose it, or the replacement chip is on the slide.

Is this likely? Or does anyone else have any ideas?

Hi, The laptop(HP envy m6 notebook PC) is switching off if removed from charging and the battery icon says "10% available, Plugged in, not chrarging". Despite this, the indicator next to chrarging plug is white, which generally is orange if the laptop not fully charged. Please help!

Here I Am again.. Never thought I'd visit this forum this often that often asking for help..
Im actually writing this on the problematic laptop, and i cant hit the buttons correctly, so sorry for any mistakes.

Here we go, An Amilo Fujitsu Siemens Si 3655 laptop (about 5 years old) (windows 7 professional upgrade from vista several years ago, 64bit) Switches to a smaller resolution automatically while in use (there are black bars on the right [about 1/5 size of the screen] and a small one on the bottom) on the screen, a restart fixes them, sometimes it takes a few tries to get it right. I HAVE Reinstalled the Intel Graphics Family Controller 4 Drivers or whatever the hell they are called, it asked for a restart and booted back into the small screen right away I checked the Intel Media Graphics Control panel for a fix, it doesn't have any bigger resolution available, and when right clicking and checking the display settings it's already on the biggest settings (1024 x 768 ) Whitch i think is the full resolution but i still have black bars.. If I maximize a window it only scales up to the black bars..

I have bolded the important stuff incase u don't have time to check the full story.
Great thanks.. estXcrew

A:Laptop Switches to lower resolution automatically

Does it do this when hooked up to an external monitor? or just the laptop screen?

Can you take a screenshot of the screen to see what the laptop is actually trying to display? (1024x768 should fill the screen, but if the screen is the issue, the screenshot will be the right amount of pixels, and the screen is not displaying it properly...)

Like the headline says, I have a problem with sound on my Toshiba laptop (model is Satellite L755-S5110). Sound just randomly switches to headphones, even though they aren't connected. The sound just stops playing from the speakers, and when I plug in headphones, it plays normaly through headphones, and works fine while using them, but when I unplug headphones, the sound then plays from speakers for some time and then again just stops on its own and if I plug headphones again, it plays through them.
First, I thought it was some driver issue with win 10, so I did clean install of windows 7 (it was first installed when I bought my laptop), then again installed all the required drivers from the toshiba site (I checked in the device manager couple of times if all audio drivers were up to date, tried reinstalling/installing again), and the exact same problem remained. I also tried reinstalling audio driver provided from toshiba site, and used microsoft audio driver, and again the same problem.
Also, for example, when the sound stops playing from speakers, i just open Playback devices (where my default speakers device is listed), and the sound starts playing again through speakers (didnt change anything there, just opened it...)
I'd really appreciate if someone could help me with this issue, since I've already tried everything I could think of, and none worked yet.

A:Laptop switches sound from speakers to headphone jack on its own

Right click the Sound icon in the Taskbar by the clock
Choose Troubleshoot Sound Problems.
The sensor inside the headphone jack may be failing. Take a Paper clip and straighten it out and poke it in the headphone jack with the computer off, and then try it again.
Reinstall the Audio driver from the Toshiba Support site. Satellite L755-S5110 Support | Toshiba

I'm currently experiencing this issue and it's really annoying. I just bought this laptop for 2 months and it's been working fine. Then suddenly this problem started yesterday. Generally every time I open up a game my laptop will automatically switch to Power saver mode and it causes some lags in the game. At this point I would Alt+Tab to desktop and switch it to "High Performance". Here's the annoying part, even though I have set it back to "High Performance", the laptop still works as it in "Power saver" mode, I can tell because the game is still laggy and slow. I tried to restart the laptop and experienced the same issue. I ran a Full scan by using Avast Internet Security 2014 and didn't detect any problem at all. What should I do? Thank you.

By the way my OS is windows 8.1

A:Laptop automatically switches to Power saver mode

Hello Frankie, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It sounds like some sort of power management software that came preinstalled by the OEM on the laptop. Check to see if such software is on there, and what it is set to.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

Hey there, so i have a Sony Vaio VPCEB18FD laptop with intel core i5. Sometime a go i noticed that it started to over heat so opened my laptop up and cleaned the fan then turned it on and it was fine this happened 1 more time. After 2 weeks from the last time i cleaned the fan, the laptop started to shut down after five minuites of turning on.... Without over heating or nothing! So i thought maybe one of the wires was not properly put in so i opened it up and checked all the wires but they were fine! Then, i tried to format it to factory settings (by pressing the vaio assist button thats over the keyboard to the right next to the power button) but it switched off five minuites into the process and it was not finnished i tried this again and the same happened. Then i tried installing ubuntu 11.04 and after five minutes (it got to where it says ubuntu and there a dots loading) it switched off again. I don't know what to do, HELP!!!

My laptop is an Optima Centoris v662 and i recently had Microsoft service pack 3 installed over windows vista. ever since i did, my wireless radio turned off and the switches (fn f10 and the seperate switch just above the keyboard) wont work. my wireless card is a intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945AGB but i dont think that is the problem. Nothing i do helps fix the problem. anyone got advice?

A:My wireless radio switches wont work on my optima laptop

Microsoft service pack 3 - for what - is this a Vista Service Pack or Office Service Pack (I'm not an expert at all the latest releases - and cant find a Vista Sp3 - office 2003 SP3 - but that was released in 2007 i think )

try a restore to before service pack 3 and see if that now allows the switch to work

I have an Alienware 17 R3 and recently updated the BIOS and the other day I noticed the ?annoying? blue ring on the charger switched off, to get it to come back on I need to disconnect from the laptop and switch off and on again. But several times since it will stay illuminated until I plug it in, the laptop hasn?t moved from my desk and the power pack has been under the desk so the only thing I think that could of damaged it would be this update.
It had a replacement motherboard a few months after purchase but now a few months out of warranty, is it only the power supply or worse?

A:Power supply blue light switches off when I plug it into the laptop.

If the LED on the DC plug doesn't stay on reliably, replace the adapter with a new OEM unit first.  If that doesn't solve the problem,  the next suspect is the system's DC jack -- replace this part
www.parts-people.com/index.php
If that doesn't solve the problem, the mainboard is bad -- Dell's warranty on replacement parts is 90 days.  If it's been less time than that, have the board replaced again.  If you had it replaced elsewhere, contact the repair shop to find out what warranty they offer on the repair they did.

I have an IBM T41 running XP Pro. the problem is that if I knock the laptop or try to move it the screen switches off. I can't seem to identify the problem, here's a list of symptoms.
When the laptop hs only just been turned on and is cold no amount of movement or twisting of the frame will cause the problem to appear. It's only after the laptop has been on for about 20 mins that the screen will turn off.
When the screen does go off the laptop does continue to function ie. if I'm playing music it will continue to play and the keyboard still seems to function. Although when the screen first goes off the music will stutter like a scratched record, maybe about 20 times and then continues to play.
Sometimes the laptop will reboot itself, but not always.
When the laptop comes back on it says windows detected an error with the video device driver which has gone into a loop. The error code is STOP 0*000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER (Q293078)
I've removed the RAM, battery, keyboard, DVD drive and hard disk but the problem is the same even when I'm on the select boot device screen.
If I keeps the laptop on a firm surface it work no problem.

Does anyone have any ideas at which part of the laptop I should be looking at. I'm going to take the laptop completely to pieces and put it back together again to make sure nothing is loose. Other than that, I haven't got a clue.

Cheers, Mark

I forgot to add
I've also tried connecting an external monitor to the laptop to see if this one stays on but it goes off at the same time as the laptop screen.

Cheers Mark

Hi. My keyboard stopped working out of the blue, and whenever I open the laptop it goes into tablet mode. Switching to laptop mode does not fix the keyboard issue. Any help?

A:Lenovo Yoga C930: Laptop switches modes randomly, sometimes thinks it's shut and just goes black!

Problem seems to have fixed itself, but I'm still worried. It's like something is making the laptop confused. Sometimes it doesn't know if it's in tablet mode, laptop mode, or closed. There's been times where the screen just shuts off, and I need to close and open the laptop again to get it to work. In fact, it was this that caused the issue in the first place. Is there anything that might be causing this system confusion?

I have hooked up my Dell Inspiron 15 (N5050) with Windows 7 Home Premium to my big screen TV. I use a VGA cable, a converter box, and a s-video cable. The TV receives the signal fine, but there?s a problem:

When I plug the VGA cable into the laptop, I get images on both screens (laptop and TV) for about 5 secs. Then, both screens go black and then I only get images on the laptop. Then, after 5 secs, the screen goes black and then I get images on both screen again....and so on. Because I only have 5 secs, I don't have time to make any changes unless I unplug the VGA cable.

Also, each time the screens switch (from 2 to 1 back to 2 to 1...) for five secs, I hear the sound that you hear when you plug in a thumbdrive. It?s as if I?m unplugging the VGA cable every 5 secs and plugging it back in.

Any ideas?

A:Laptop switches to TV, to laptop, and back again every 5 sec.

See if you've got a hotkey combo on the laptop that can control the display being used. Usually something like Fn+F3 or Fn+F4.

Also the display adaptor software may have some configuration settings to play around with to customize how it all works.
