I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a T400 ThinkPad upgraded to Windows 10 that suddenly had a blank screen and no lights except for wifi.On closer inspection I discovered the backlight is not lit during startup, whilst ThinkPad splash and window symbol are displayed but then, screen goes blank and then I hear the windows startup sound.Displays perfectly on an external monitor. I have replaced inverter, lcd cable and screen .... nothing works! I'm not sure if I should just resell the parts I bought and get another laptop .... can I transfer Windows 10 to another machine or is there another fix I could try? I don't have much money.Any help appreciated.

A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.

If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.

Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.

SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!  I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!  What do I do?!

Now, I suspect that the inverters are fine and I'm wondering about the LCD switch or LCD cable. I suppose I could just buy a cable, but before that, I wanted to take a step back and try to figure out if I'm overlooking anything. I've not been able to find a picture or location of the t400 lcd switch in either the lenovo hardware manual for the t400 or elsewhere online.Hi,I've got a thinkpad t400 with CCFL backlight. I recently replaced a bad LCD (the backlight was working at the time) with a new one. However, while the new screen works, it's backlight did not. I ordered a new inverter and plugged that in - still didn't work. I grabbed the old screen's backlight and tried it with both inverters - did not come on. I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. Plugged in the new screen's backlight (while lcd was still plugged into the thinkpad), it's backlight came on.So, I know both backlights are fine, and suspected I just had a crappy inverter. I got a replacement new inverter and it still doesn't work. Tried new lcd and old backlight with all three again, no dice. Backlights still turn on when connected to spare laptop. So I now suspect the inverters are fine. I noticed that the laptop no longer goes to sleep or hibernation when the lid is closed. I changed the power settings so that it should sleep or hibernate, tried each power mode and it still refuses to do so. So I think the issue is with the switch that detects when t... Read more

I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... It all started when I installed Win 7 after a Linux usage for a couple of months. First I thought it was uTorrent that screwed it up so I removed it but it still gave BSODs at least once a day. Haven't had the energy to do anything about it until now so now I'm asking you guys for advice how to get rid of it.
I have activated minidump in Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Setting in Startup and Recovery > Small memory dump (256KB) under System failure.
Got a BSOD a couple of minutes ago but I didn't get a minidump output from it.

Attached the four debug reports I got from SF Diagnostic Tool.

Hi,

I have a T400 which has the following two display adapters:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I tried downoading and installing this:

Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit - ThinkPad T400, R400, T500, W500

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

I went to the device manager, right-clicked on the ATI adapter and did Update Driver, and it did at first find a better match but said it couldn't be installed with the same error message from above (Code 10). Now, when I try to update the driver again, it says... Read more

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

A:thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

Hello, I have recently picked up a used T400, it had no OS installed and I happen to have a copy of windows 7 pro with a key. Will I need to install any drivers or extra software with windows 7 or will everything work fine without drivers? Thanks

A:T400 Drivers...

Hi T400man and welcome to the community,

Once you get the OS installed, run Windows Update and try to not install updates pertaining to hardware drivers.  You'll need Net.Framework 4.0 installed and then you can install TVSU and it will find and install hardware drivers for you.  It's not a good idea to install every driver that it finds all at once, especially if your machine needs a bios update.

If TVSU determines that you need a bios update and you want to install it, install that one by itself.

Regards,
Dave

Hello, I have a Thinkpad Edge.  According to the serial number on the Lenovo website its a type 0319.  I had to re-install Windows 7 on the laptop and now I can't get the wireless driver to install.  I know the wireless card works because when i boot into a linux live environment i can connect with wireless.  I did some googling and I can't find the driver either.  I downloaded the Lenovo update software, and it won't download any drivers.  I did download speccy to figure out what wireless card I have but after its scan finishes speccy tells me that wi-fi is not enabled.  I cannot for the life of me figure out how to "enable" the wi-fi.  There isn't a switch or a button that i can see on the outside.  I keep hitting the function key that has a radio antennae on it but that does nothing.  What am I missing.  I did find the wireless card info from linux, it is a Realtek RTL8188CE I can't find the driver from what I would call a reputable site.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Hello,Today I updated my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen with the latest drivers recommended by Lenovo Vantage program, as well as the latest Windows 10 Pro updates. After conducting those updates, I can no longer sign in using the Fingerprint sensor. When I open the Device Manager to check the status of the Biometric Device driver, it shows the following message: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"The sign in option using the fingerprint does not even show up in the Windows settings for Sign In. Things I have already tried:1) Update the driver through the Device Manager 2) Download and reinstall the fingerpring driver from the Lenovo drivers website3) Reset fingerprint settings in the BIOS and making sure it is enabled4) Change configuration in "gpedit.msc" -> computer configuration -> administrative templates -> windows components -> biometrics -> allow the use of biometrics and allow users to log on using biometrics set to enabled None of the 4 attempts above solved the problem. Can anyone please provide any solution for this case? It looks like a lot of people have been experiencing this issue and no one from Lenovo provided a clear and definitive solution. The latest drivers must have bugs and, in my opinion, Lenovo must stop distributing them until this issue is fixed. Thank you very much.Best.

I know you have a X1 carbon and not T570 but did you see the below post from a Lenovo employee?  Specifically the part about SGX?  It fixed my problem on my TP25.

Dear Community,As the title suggests, I did a full system reset recently. That was because my old HDD seemed to start dying and slowing down the system a lot.Now I have a brand new HDD (Seagate firecuda 2TB) and installed everything I found on the Lenovo support page for my System (4284-4DG) after installing all important Windows updates. So far so good - I guess. At least Lenovo Service Bridge/System Update don't suggest any further software. But I'm facing some issues already:1) The Hotkey Feature Integration seems not to work! Not only do I not see any OSD, but also half of the Fn+FXX combinations aren't working (like Fn+F5 - Fn+F8, Fn+F2, Fn+F3...).2) I can therefore not access the Communications Utility (unless searching the .exe) nor the Connections Tab (F5). In the latter one Bluetooth isn't even listed (but always on)3) The Power Manager is very limited in functionality like I do not have a Battery Management button nor can I adjust the default screen brightness in the Energy Profiles. I remember that this was very possible before.4) The Device Manager shows still unknown objects: PCI-Communication Controller (simple)(? => loose translation from German, maybe slightly different English name) and an unknown device. As said before, I installed every driver I could find in the list from Lenovo. I have no clue what this could be.5) Windows Update shows me some optional Updates which I did not install yet, because I always read that one should install drivers from the PC ... Read more

Hello, some time ago I have great problems with Windows 8.* on my old T400. On this forums I found that there is no support for my laptop anymore so I finally after maybe 1.5 year returned back to Windows 7. Now, there is  Windows 10 and I want to ask if it will run ok or not. I know, that laptop is not supported yet but maybe Windows 10 is quite different than 8.1.Is there somebody who have same or simillar laptop running Windows 10 on it successfully? Here is my old question about Win 8.1 - https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T400-Windows-8-1-support-stop/td-p/18623...

A:T400 compatibility with windows 10

Just tried 2 days ago. Not sucessful. Second boot OK and allow you to go to Win 10. But you cannot uninstall program. Then when restarted, it cannot reboot. This time set restore point but no use and force to go back to win 7. Last time without setting restore point, the only option was to reload the win 10 to allow reboot but then it wipped out all other non-win apps and files including all lenovo driver apps.

I am purchasing a new Lenovo T400 laptop. Lenovo offers the Home Premium Windows 7 OS in both 32 and 64-bit versions, at the same price, with the 32 bit version being the "standard" choice. What are the tradeoffs of having the 32 v. 64-bit version installed? I understand that 32-versions may eventually become obsolete, but I am more interested in immediate performance and utility. I also have a lot of memory on the comptuer.

Well John, It all depends on how much memory/RAM you have installed and the GHz of your CPU.
Looking at this: Lenovo - Laptop computers - ThinkPad T400 even the ultimate version only has 2GB, so 64-Bit Windows 7 will just about be able to run on it.You won't experience any better performance than if you were running 32-bit. A good minimum for any performance increases is 3GB of RAM.

That's my 2 cents

Thanks,

The new Windows 7 security updates are really slowing down the Lenovo Thinkpad T400/500s. Will you guys make Windows 10 support the T400/500 laptops? It is supposed to run a lot better than 7 because of the recent slowdowns.

I have a T400 and installed Windows 10 about 2 months ago.  I initially ran into the issue with the switchable graphics option in the BIOS rendering the screen blank.  After finding the solution to that issue on this forum, I have been able to use the T400 with the Windows 10 OS generally without incident and it has actually run better than Windows 7.  Each time there have been updates to Windows 10, I have had to enter the BIOS and change the switchable graphics option to discrete and I was good to go.  There were new Windows 10 updates installed overnight and I once again accessed the BIOS and changed the switchable graphics to discrete.  However, this time, the T400 gets stuck in the boot up process.  Upon powering up, the opening Thinkpad screen appears followed by the initialization process.  However, at this point, the screen goes black and all that appears is a small flashing cursor at the top of the left corner of the screen.

I'm trying to update the factory recovery media to service pack 2.  System is 32-bit Windows Vista.I have no problems with the recovery disks [other than a driver issue I fixed myself].  However, this is Vista Service Pack 1.I used Windows update and no problems until it installed Service Pack 2 and a new Windows Update agent. Now Windows update just hangs forever with some disk activity, but it never complete.Any ideas?

First approach: (logically) I went to http://support.lenovo.com/us/en, typed in my machine number, downloaded Lenovo Service Bridge and still I have no clue what it is and what shall I do with it. Second approach: I went to Control Panel > Devices and Printers in Windows, where I got this:  I right clicked to troubleshoot: The driver for PCI Simple Communications Controller is not installed. Install the latest driver for the device. Apply this fix > Device driver software was not successfully installed What's next? I prefer a manual solution, ideally I would just install the latest driver I need without the auto-detect bloat. Preferably within Windows, so it will be auto-updated later.

When will Lenovo release fingerprint reader software for Lenovo T400 for Windows 8.1? There is a driver for T61, but not for T400. I installed some version from internet, it busted my motherboard after a week. Now I am looking for the official driver for my other T400.

Hey guys! My colleague & I recently purchased 2 Lenovo Thinkpad t400's with windows 10. Both laptops were supposed to be equipped with bluetooth. However, my laptop doesn't seem to have the bluetooth connectivity option available, while my colleague does! I have tried following the answers suggested in this post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/user/VerifyUserEmailPage/user-id/1235911/mail-message-tracking/J02S5C8U... but still no luck. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance! PS I know the laptop has the bluetooth option because the small dash under the screen has the indicator for bluetooth but does not light up.
