Q: Windows Explorer stop working when creating new folder

i recently changed my win7 theme using these apps; ux theme patcher & windows 7 start orb changer. after done customizing, a problem occur, windows explorer stop working everytime i try to create new folder in library (e.g. Libraries\Videos\). but it's fine if i create the new folder in the sub folders. it's fine too when i open the 'Videos' folder using this directory [C:\Users\rahm\Videos] instead of [Libraries\Videos]. i've restore my windows once but nothing's change. can anybody help me with this?

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer stop working when creating new folder

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Maimmj, welcome to SF!,

have you tried going back to default theme settings?
Is it possible that you also changed things in your UAC?
Can you tell what exactly was done to try to restore windows?

I am having this problem recently and I am not sure of the solution.
To solve the problem on the fly one has to start task manager, stop the explorer.exe process, start a new task, type in command.com enter explorer.exe into the Dos window and press enter.
This enables one to carry on using the computer.

Ways to prevent:

I have been told and have found what seems to be the solution:
Type run in the search programs and files(bottom right) click run, enter MSCONFIG, go to startup tab and disable programs that may be causing the problem.
I am not sure I have found the problem program causing this yet but I have disabled a couple of startup programs and the right click freeze seems to be happening less now??
Any comments.

Hello. I'm an older-in-age computer user. I don't like windows libraries (I've removed them with a registry hack) for various reasons - the first being I ended up not backing up my photos (and consequently losing them) because I was backing up a library. Annoying, and it is gone (or at least I hope so).
I want to be able to open a folder immediately from my taskbar. I blog a lot, and being able to quickly get to my pictures folder is a time and grief saver. I pinned the folder to my taskbar (with that "create notepad doc, change to .exe, drag to taskbar, change target property hack). All well and good.
Except when I click on the folder, that damn windows explorer pops up next to it! I don't want that. I just want to click on the folder and get to THAT folder. Plain and simple.
What am I doing wrong? How can I get windows explorer to stop popping up on my taskbar, especially for folders that I've already pinned to the taskbar?
See screenshots.
Screenshot 1: Shows the properties of the pinned folder. I didn't change the icon yet.
Screenshot 2: Shows windows explorer popping up in taskbar when I click the pinned folder. Not necessary.

A:Pinned folder to taskbar, can't stop windows explorer from popping up.

HI Artemisia,
I may be missing something in my understanding, but isn't that what you would expect ?  If, for example, you were to use Irfanview to look at an image and click on 'File/Open' you get the 'Open file' dialogue box which is just a potted Windows Explorer view, and you navigate to the folder containing the image you want.
Here, you already have the folder you want, so you get the Windows Explorer view of the contents of the folder so you can select the file you want. If I interpret your second screen shot correctly, the folder you have pinned to the taskbar contains other folders as well as files, and that is what the screenshot reflects.
If my interpretation of what is happening is correct, the system is trying to help you - not get in your way !  Loved the recycle bin icon !

Since when has this started happening? Are you hooked to another HDD in addition? If yes then unplug this drive and try installing Windows 7 on the other HDD.

If you are on Windows Vista then go to Start, then search "msconfig" and click "msconfig.exe". Then make sure everything in msconfig is how it should be. Sorry but I don't know what to do using XP. That's all I can suggest (for now), i'l keep you posted if I see a solution.

A:windows explorer stop working

First, I'd be inclined to initially disable all Internet Explorer's Add-ons. If that cures IE re-enable them one at a time to see if the error re-appears.

Although you haven't posted your computer specifications you have told us that you're using Windows 7 Home Premium, which does not have the facility to do a system backup. Upgrading to Win 7 Professional will let you carry out a full backup or you might want to consider third-party software such as any on this comprehensive list:

List of backup software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As for system restore, it depends how much disk space you've allocated for it and how many restore points have been created. Once your allocated disk space is full Windows will delete the oldest restore point to make way for the newest one.

I wasn't sure if this was the best subfolder to post this in.

Something happened on one of my users computers, Microsoft XPS Document Writer seems to have gone off the deepend. Whenever we try to print to it, we do not get the dialog box asking us where to save it, and if we try to print a test page from the Devices and Printers, printer properties, we get the the error message that XPS Has Caused Windows Explorer To Stop Working.

I tried uninstalling the device and readding it, to no success. I have no idea where to go from here, short of reinstalling the OS, and that is a reality I am hoping to avoid.

The computer in question is running Windows 7 Profession 64 bit.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, Version 6.1, (Build 7601; Service pack 1)

This problem started a few months ago when the pop up box would occasionally appear and say the application (either Outlook 2007 or Explorer 9) had stopped working. Closing the box would allow me to continue on in the application.

Then occasionally the box would pop up saying XXX had stopped working and it had.

Now every time I try to access Outlook 2007 or Explorer 9 or even Google Chrome they stop working immediately.

Every other program that accesses the net works fine; ie., windows update, online games, McAfee ect.

What is super frustrating is that I can?t access the web or e-mail to get a fix for this problem. I have accessed the internet on my phone (yes home WiFi works great) and seen that this is not an isolated problem. I have tried restores to earlier dates. I have tried to resolve it with some of the more understandable fixes to no avail.

The only major difference from when the problem started and was intermittent and now is that I signed up for Windows 365 (this is my work and home computer).

Has anyone identified the problem and figured out a fix that a non IT person can accomplish? Keep in mind I can?t access the net with the effected computer so I would have to transfer fixes from one machine to another.

I have a XP Home SP2 computer and whenever you try to delete/rename/create anything using explorer explorer crashes giving the send and dont send dialog. Meaning i cant do anything. I can use the command prompt to do these tasks however, so i dont think its a hard disk issue. I have tried all of the above in safe mode under the administrator and a normal user and i still get the errors. I have also disabled all non-MS services and all unnecessary startup entries and the problem still occurs. The computer runs Zonealarm Security Suite (Firewall, Anti-virus, Anti-spyware etc...) and Adaware se personal, both which turn up no viruses or spyware apart from the occasonal cookie. So i dont think that it is a virus or spyware infection. This behavior occurs over all system files. Does anyone have any suggestions before i have to reinstall XP?

If not use a clean boot to diagnose

If it is just the one program that causes the problem the program may be corrupt. Try from another account.

Try going back to before the problem with a system restore
Go to search and type event viewer, look for any errors that appear in the adminstrative tab.
Go to device manager look for any yellow warnings indicating problems with drivers. Update drivers. Especially Video.
Run an SFC command
System Files - SFC Command
Make a full antivirus scan
Download and run malwarebytes. Make a full scan after you update.
Try in another user account.

A:Windows Explorer, My Documents Folder, My Computer Not Working

Hello KingerXI and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. We are not currently using the TrendMicro version of HijackThis on the forums because it is still in beta. This means that there could still be unresolved issues with it operation. The latest stable release of HijackThis is version 1.99.1 and can be found here.It looks like there is a dialer installed. Let's try a different scanner and see if it shows anything else.Download WinPFind3u.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.Do not change any other settings. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.Let it run unhindered until it finishes. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.Use the Add Reply button and Copy/Paste the information back here. I will review it when it comes in. If, after posting, the last line is not < End of Report > then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts.Cheers.OT

I have had a problem with a specific folder or two on my computer, when I open the folder I get the error message that windows explorer has stopped working.  It only happens with specific folders and everything else works fine.  I did a lot of reading to figure out a fix. I finally tried right clicking the program explorer.exe located in C:Windows and chose "run as administrator" and this fixed the problem. Note that the error message details list an application crash of windows.exe I thought I would post this to help others.  I don't know if this is the same problem some folks describe with a continual loop of the error message, problems opening the control panel or problems upon start up.  But if you have a similar problem to the one I described try this very simple fix.  Cheers

I really don't know how to better describe this particular problem in the title so I'll use this space to describe in more detail this annoyance.

I would like to prevent Explorer from scrolling a folder's contents to focus on a selected file or folder. Like, if I have a folder open with quite a few files in it and the file I want to double click to open is on the third row I'll go to double click but with the first click Explorer has scrolled along and the second click lands on a completely different file.
It's extremely irritating.

Hopefully at least one other person out there will get what I'm on about and be just as annoyed by it as I am.

I confess... I do not follow what you're describing.

With Windows Explorer, the folders show up on the left pane as you expand them, and the contents of those folders (both sub-folders as well as files) show up on the right pane. You wouldn't have any files show on the left side, so the only place you can select a file would be on the right side.

Now you say you want to double-click on a file, which I would think MUST be on the right side. When I click on a file on the right side (which by definition must already be visible, so that I can click on it) the only thing that happens is that the selected item lights up, as "selected". That's it. No scrolling of any kind.

Have I described what you're doing correctly? Or does something different happen for you than I've described, at some point in the sequence?
Perhaps you could provide two screenshots, one just before your first click on the file you want to double-click on, showing its initial presentation (i.e. in the third row as you describe).

Then, a second screensh... Read more

On the other hand, if I rt click empty space and create a new folder, what happens in mine is that the New Folder appears in the middle of the pane once it is created.
(Using list view in alpha order)
In Details view, in alpha order, it appears at the top of the list as displayed in explorer once I've created it.
But in neither of these cases does the cursor end up in the name field, and I have to right click to rename it.

Are you expecting that when you create the folder you should be prompted for its name?
Unfortunately that's not how it seems to work from a rt click new folder create. A bit messy.

XYplorer behaves as I think you wish: the cursor is left in 'New Folder' in the newly created folder, ready for you to rename it.
Some here use the free version, so you might consider using an alternative file manager.

Is there any way to stop Windows Explorer checking the integrity of links/shortcuts when I open a folder full of them? I have links to some folders that are only available over my home network, and if the networked computers are not all on, opening the folder containing all the shortcuts (not clicking on any of them) causes Explorer to hang, sometimes for half a minute. Annoying when the folder also contains non-network links I use regularly. (I know I could put all the network links into a different folder, but if the above can be accomplished, that would be a slightly better option...).

Googled this, but no results thus far... Thanks!

I've been messing with netplwiz and now Windows 10 creates a temporary User for 1 of my 3 User Names

I have 3 User Names: INTU1; INTU2 and EDUCATION.

What I mean, is that when I select INTU2, a new, temporary set of files is made in the Users folder on C drive, so I don't see my usual desktop with all my files, because of course, the desktop file, being newly created, has no files in it (or just a few).

How did I get to this? Well, in netplwiz I chose a User Name and chose Properties. Under Properties is a tab called "Group Membership". Originally all my Users Names were ticked off as "Other". Well, what I did was set all my User Names Group settings, simply to "Administrator". I think that simply set each User Name to "Administrator"" and that's all.

Anyway, in an attempt to put things back as they were I've gone and set all my User Names Groups back to what I think they were. Anyway, all my User Names are now set to 3 Groups that I think they were set to originally, which are "Administrators" "Users" & "HomeUsers". I can verify that all User Names are set with these 3 Groups.

So, why is it that when selecting INTU2, does Windows create a temporary set of files in the User folder, and not pointing to the original files in that folder?

I wonder if it's to do with a password issue. I may have set passwords in addition to what I've described above. Perhaps if I remove passwords things will... Read more

Whenever windows updates is running automatic folders are getting created in my D:\ drive with name Ex: 1654646465646546df the size of that folders is empty. how should i stop this updates folder creation. and how to delete this folder please provide a fix to stop this issue.

A:Stop creating Windows Updates Folders

Windows Update automatically creates a randomly named folder to extract the update to, on the drive with the most free space that is available. The folder can safely be deleted. The only thing I know of that will stop those folders being saved on your external drive is to disconnect the drive when installing updates, but the folders will then get created on your Rootdrive, normally C:, instead.

I use custom libraries for Windows 8.

This is my setup:

Documents (built-in library)
Apps (portable, no-need-to-install applications)
Media (library for all media)
> Media/Images
> Media/Audio
> Media/Movies
> Media/Other
Web IO (library for Internet related files)
> Web IO/Downloads
> Web IO/To Be Uploaded

Notice that Pictures, Videos, and Music have been renamed Images, Movies, and Audio. They have also been moved into the Media library and are now just regular folders themselves.

I explicitly removed the Pictures, Videos, and Music libraries from the navigation pane on the left side of Windows Explorer.

However, every day Windows keeps recreating the default libraries all the time. The only default library I want to keep is Documents. How do I stop Windows from making libraries without my permission?

Sorry if this has been answered before. I did a quick search but I couldn't find a thread/topic similar to this question. Perhaps I didn't look hard enough.

A:Stop Windows from Creating Libraries Automatically

Those libraries have special functions to Windows. For example, the Photo apps will all look for Pictures library and do special things with it. By removing it, you're castrating the functionality of these apps, and some functions won't work correctly. For instance, the Picture gallery will not work correctly unless your pictures are in the Pictures library.

I have a partitioned hard drive and I use the C drive only for systems and programs etc. All my personal stuff is kept on my E drive which I keep neatly organised with a folder structure that works for me. However Windows keeps automatically cluttering up my E drive by creating 10 root level folders, and even if I delete them they are recreated. I cannot understand why this feature exists, but more importantly how can I stop it from happening?? It makes it so confusing because I already have subfolders in my own folder structure with the same name and it's just confusing and a cluttered mess. I'd be so grateful if anyone can tell me how to stop this really annoying feature of window please...??

A:How to stop Windows auto creating root level folders??

First of all, What are the names of these folders ? and certainly it is not a Windows feature. The Folders that are created by Windows on root level are $RECYCLE.BIN (contains deleted files), System Volume Information (contains System Restore points) among with other hidden files such pagefile.sys, hiberfil.sys under C: drive, they are hidden and you can not move to a sub folder. If you have folders created under E: drive then it must have been from some third party applications which you have to find out what it is and usually there's an option to configure where the folders should be created.

my computer booting speed became fast, but now when I try to
play online game explorer stopped working message is keep popping up
and I had this problem when I first got my laptop.
I researched and adds-on might cause this problem.
But I'm not sure what casue this problem right now.
Also I dowloaded microsoft word viewer casue I needed it wuickly.
So after I downloaded the viewer I had 6 windows updates that are
related to this program. Do u guys think this caused the problem?

I checked some tips how to speed up my laptop's performance
I saw "how to Enable or Disable the Receive Window Auto Tuning Level in Vista"
and I saw that the auto tuning was highly restricted (see the attachment). Does this prevent the internet go slow? cause i'm having problems where I can't load some videos fast.

plz help guys.

A:problem with explorer stop working

If the problem happened immediately after the word viewer, I would say that there is chance that is the problem.

To find out, you can make a system restore point, now. Then go back to the point prior to the installation. If things work its the viewer.

When you get the results of the system restore, we can discuss this further. We will know more and will be able to give you more help.

Ok, so I have a problem where Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it.

I have documented this problem on my blog here:

This has my hardware details, etc...

I consider myself an expert at troubleshooting (being in support for over 10 years including time as a Lead Technician doing Windows 2000 support focussing on performance), and have checked quite a few things to try to pinpoint this issue, but I just can't find the cause.

I am asking others if they have seen this issue. I need to know if it is only on my workstation, or if others are seeing it as well.

Have you ever right-clicked, chose new folder and then had to wait 45 seconds for a new folder to appear.

Then the same thing when you try to rename the new folder, a hang of about 45 seconds before the new name take affect.

Anyway, let me know if you have experienced ths.

A:Windows 7 hangs when creating and renaming new folder

I have only seen it hang for a couple of seconds, and that is only on random occassions. I rarely use Windows Explorer, so I had assumed that even the times that it did hang for a moment was due to the third party file manager that I use, but am not certain.

I am so baffled by this, there is simply nowhere else I can turn except for these forums. Now, let's start from the beginning.

I keep all of my pictures, writing files, etc. in a folder called "Files". Original, I know, but I don't like "My Pictures" or anything. So this is a user-created folder that I have had basically forever. Inside the folder, there is a folder that was once named Misc Pics. Now, it came to pass that a folder called Misc. Pics popped up one day, and I did not make it, of that I am sure. Misc. Pics has always been empty, while Misc Pics has items in it.

Frustrated, I Shift+Deleted Misc. Pics and renamed Misc Pics to Miscellaneous Pictures. I hoped that this would solve the problem. However, it didn't. Misc. Pics reappeared as usual. Today, I was fed up, because I have discovered that every time a picture is saved into Miscellaneous Pictures, Misc. Pics reappears, even when it has been SHIFT+DELETED. I made a brand new folder. I titled it Miscellaneous Pics, which was all I could think to do. I hand copy-pasted everything from Miscellaneous Pictures into the new Miscellaneous Pics folder.

Misc. Pics still insisted on re-appearing.

Now, I know this isn't a serious problem at all, but this is driving me CRAZY. I have no idea why it is doing this, and I want to know how I can finally get rid of this stupid damn Misc. Pics folder once and for all. Please help.

I use Windows Explorer numerous times every day. I like to navigate to folders using the folders pane and click on items in main view. I sometimes drill down to folders in the main view to finish my navigation until I'm at the folder I wish to see.

All of the sudden I'm finding that when I click on a folder in the main view, a new Explorer window pops up. I did not change any of my preferences in this regard. I went into the Tools-->Folder Options and saw that "Open each folder in the same window" was still selected, as I'd left it long ago (a couple of years now). So, I switched the radio button to the "Open new folder" option, then switched it back to opening the folders in the same view. I clicked "Apply" and closed Explorer (I did this as a kind of "forced" reset). Then I opened Explorer again, and it's still not obeying this setting.

What's going on? Is this influenced by some other settings location I haven't looked at yet?
AFAIK, this started not long after I had uninstalled IE9 and IE8, rolling back to IE7, then installed IE9 again. I did this to resolve a peculiar issue with certain files marked as corrupt in SFC scannow (turns out it's a defect when going to IE9 from IE8). I do realize that Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer share a lot of the same files. But this is functionality exclusive to Windows Explorer. Really strange...

Hello Gary,

You might see if downloading and merging the .reg for the listed Folder and Directory options in the tutorial below may be able to help. It will restore the default associations and registry entries for folders and drives, and hopefully fix this for you.

Everytime I try to open up the control pane, Vista tells me that Windows Explorer has stopped working, then restarts it.

I'm using Business Ultimate 64bit. I've run sfc /scannow several times.

I have a custom built PC,
Giga-Byte EP35-DS4 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad at 2.4Ghz, Kentsfield model
2GB Ram, Crucial Ballistix DDR2
eVGA GeForce 8800 GT
Seagate 500GB HD
Samsung DVD Burner
Encore Wireless card

That's about it. Default BIOS setup. Any help would be appreciated... I tried running 'msconfig' and disabling all Non-Microsoft Services and all Startup items.

Interestingly enough, when I boot into Safe Mode I can access the Control Panel just fine. I don't know what that means.. I'm new to this, I'm a Mac user by default.

Thanks in advance!

I recently upgraded to windows vista and since then I have been having a few problems. My first problem is sometimes firefox will randomly say "stopped" at the bottom left. Then when I try to re open it, it says the program is already running; however I cant close it with task manager. The only fix I know of for this problem is to reboot my pc every time. My next problem affects firefox and internet explorer. Every so often it will say that it cant connect to web pages and to make sure im connected to the internet, but windows live messanger, steam chat still work (steams main page where you buy stuff also loses connection). Again the only fix i found for this was also a reboot. Some said that uninstalling zone alarm fixed it for them, I have not tried this yet but i did tell zone alarm not to start up when my pc starts and that didn't fix it. My current list of antivirus/spyware are:

1: Zone alarm 2:AVG Free
3:Adaware SE Anniversary Edition 4:Spybot S&D
5:Spyware Blaster 6:Windows Defender
If anyone knows a fix for this, or stuff I can try im welcome to suggestions, Thanks.
FIrefox version 3.0.7
Internet Explorer version is 7 I believe

Edit: Also when it says i lost internet I can't access my router eather.

I've been having this issue for a while now. Whenever I run an application (.exe), even some Windows applications, explorer freezes and starts to use upwards of 35,000k of my memory:

The only way to get it to stop is to kill the process, but that does not fix the problem. I have tried running CCleaner, restarting the computer, and checking the disk. Checking the disk found no issues.

I can't use a program to solve this because I literally can't run any applications I've downloaded.

A:explorer stop working and chkdsk always starts

I recommend running a system files check. Open an elevated command prompt and enter sfc /scannow.

If that doesn't work, you may need to try a System Restore or a Repair Install.
