Thanks to this forum I was able to remove Trojan.Pandex but now I can't validate XP. Microsoft web site has a list of solutions but none have worked.I get the following info from their site after attempting to validate. This copy of Windows did not pass genuine validation because the validation process could not be completed. There are several possible causes:Your system level security settings prevented validation from running. Your user account may not have the correct permissions necessary to run validation. Your system settings have been modified in one of the following ways: Security software may have been installed that inadvertently altered your Windows product ID. The validation controls you used were downloaded from a site other than the Microsoft site. You chose to run the validation controls in an alternate compatibility mode. Option 1: Follow steps in Microsoft Knowledge Base article and run validation againMost customers who receive this error are able to resolve the problem by following the resolution steps found in Microsoft Knowledge Base article # 822798 and then running the validation again. Option 2: Install the latest Windows Genuine Advantage NotificationsIf this error still occurs, we recommend that you log in as an Administrator and install the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications. I just tried to run Windows Validation and recieved the following message:

Validation Failure: Product Key Failed Validation

2 years ago, I purchased WinXP Home at a retail outlet and have been using it since then. Unfortunately, I lost the original disk, and have installed XP on my machine from another disk.

But I used my original Product Code when installing it. The code really is mine, and I am looking at it right now.

In another forum, someone told me that all XP disks are the same; that it didn't matter which disk you used to actually install the O/S, that what really mattered was whether the Product Key Code was legitimate or not. In short, there is no connection between the disk that you purchase and the code that comes with it. The disks are "generic" and interchangable, and there would be no problem with using any disk as long as the Product Key Code was legitimate.

Given that, why is my machine failing the Microsoft Validation, and what can be done about it ?

Thanks in advance,

I would like to create a bootable USB drive (OS+drivers) for Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I downloaded and ran sp76482.exe from your site. It took about two hours for the process to reach about 99.5%, then suddenly the download progress goes backward from 99.5% down to 99.49% then to 99.48% etc .. and failed to complete. I made several attempts, and they all failed. Could anyone give me a fix to this problem?

Hi all
Here's a little warning of what could happen if you start becoming too reliant on using "The Cloud".

Twitter was forced to turn over a huge amount of its data to the FBI -- didn't matter if you were resident of a country not subject to the USA's internal policy or legislation.

Maybe 99% of it was just ignored -- but the fact that 3rd parties can access supposedly private data at the drop of a hat should be a concern for everybody.

I don't agree at all with "Child Porn" , "Terrorism" or in particular "In the Interest of Security" -- Whose I wonder !!, etc but these shouldn't become catchalls for instigating investigations just because some corporate big wig doesn't like what's being said about "his / her private life".

(My whole take on sites like Twitter is if you are stupid enough to use these then you deserve everything you get -but that still doesn't excuse the entire database being made available to the FBI - especially when you are dealing with Non US citizens).

I have no time for this particular group -- but you can see where the end point of this type of control can end.
Twitter Forced To Hand Over Occupy Protestor's Tweets It Sought To Protect (latest news) | The Wall

A:the Cloud really is Cloud Cuckoo land

Why anybody would think that The Cloud (or any online storage service) is private? All datas you put on the internet is public or at least the property of the company or organsiation managing the online storage service. Poeple using such service should read the agreement in full. Something nobody ever does. Even if they write that your datas will remain confidential and shouldn't be sold to any third party they know of the law loopholes to do whatever they want with them anyway. About Tweeter and the FBI I don't understand how this is relevant since the FBI has de facto access to tweeter messages just as anybody else. They gave the FBI the datas which are public anyway. They got it in a consolidated format to make it easier to searh through, but these datas are in no way private or protected by some privacy agreement since they were posted on the network for all to see already. The purpose of using Tweeter is that a maximum of poeple read your nonsens, so don;t be surprised if the FBI or the CIA or Interpol read it too.

Hi i'm clearly new here and was hopping to get some thoughts.I was told that a strong enough magnet would disrupt my wireless cam and was wondering if that was true?

A:Help on this matter

Hello and welcome to TSG.
Well im no expert on magnets or magnetism, but as far as i am aware anything to do with magnets (either natural, manufactured or electromagnetic), and anything electrical should always be avoided as much as possible. Even such minor things as "coiling up" excess cables can effectively turn themselves into electromagnets and thus disrupt electrical fields. So i would say yes it is possible. Whether the magnetic field disrupts the actual signal or the cam itself, i cannot say.

I think WINRE_DRV and System_DRV are 2 hidden partitions required on GPT disks that are used with Windows. They were likely placed there during the Windows installation by default.

In that situation, you don't want C to be active.

As far as I know, you can convert a GPT disk to MBR, but I think you have to remove all partitions first.

Not sure about the above as I don't use GPT disks.

I have 4X512 dimms of Kingston, PC3200 400MHz, dual channel mode.

Because they are in AMD environment (Athlon 64 3200+, 2GHz, Asus A8V-Deluxe s.939), my timings are just 3-3-3-8. Also its 2T(instead of 1T), 333MHz(instead of 400). They told my that I cannot do anything to change these numbers, because I have 4 sticks in amd platform.

So, I m thinking of buy 2 new kingstons of 1GB each(2X1GB), replacing the existings 2X512. After that I ll have totally 3 GBs of ram (2X512, 2X1024) Of course I ll put them in the right position so that I ll have dual channel mode(1st module:512, 2nd:1024, 3rd:512, 4rth:1024).

The queries are:
Is it a good idea to make such a movement?
Will timings be better? Will I have T1 and 400MHz?
How much improvement shall I see? 20%? 30%? 50%?

Hello everyone,

I'm having a bit of trouble with Windows XP (as you have probably guessed)...

It all started a couple of months ago when I had to reinstall Windows XP from disk, completly formatting my drive due to Windows becoming slow, virii getting in, etc. So I reinstalled. The install was successful and for a while I didnt have any problems.

Then, one day when I booted up my computer, Windows went to the welcome screen and displayed a blank dialog box. No text on the top, no content, it only had two buttons, "Yes" and "No". I could click either one and Windows would just load the desktop anyway.

This had been going on for a month or so when Windows, for some reason, decided that whenever I clicked one of the buttons, it would reboot my computer & repeat.

I then, because of this, reinstalled Windows from disk again. All has gone well until now when I rebooted my pc, and the box is back.

Please can someone help? I have tryed taking a screenshot to no avail. I hope you can understand what I mean.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thank you all in advance,
From Miki

People I could use a little direction. I bought a legal copy of Pro 7 last year and used it on three computers and register them with MicroSoft. Sometime around February of this year I started getting pop ups that the operating system wasnít a valid copy. I dealt with this on two of the units and MS made good but the third is where the twist comes in. My lap top started getting the pop ups. Its tells me to click on this and it will give me a phone number to call but since itís all ready registered, no phone number appears. I still get all the automatic downloads etc but the non valid pop ups are driving me nuts. Anybody got a phone number for validation? Thanks in advance for any help fourth coming. Bob

I don't know what "validation" is, but only one machine can be activated with one license. Registration is optional and basically just puts you on a mailing list.

With all the confusion and contradictions about a clean install with an upgrade disc' I have several questions.

If I want to use the new OS for a while before validating, do I have to give my product key number when it is asked for during the installation. I am not talking about the final validation at the end of the process, but the inquiry that comes at about step 10 during the process?

If I do not want to change any partitions, etc. do I have an option to perform the update within Vista or can I still install within the DVD?

Hello Rich,

No, you do not have to enter your product key number in while installing, but you will only have a 30 day grace period (120 total) before you must enter your key number and activate Windows 7, or uninstall it.

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Sure, you can upgrade Vista to Windows 7 without changing the other partitions if you like.

Hi Gang

Long time not been on here. Glad to be back. A couple of things that I have been wondering about with Win 7 that I have noticed. One is when you right click on your computer, and go to properties, and down at the bottom where your Windows activation is, the Product Key # is not the real one, it is some goof look alike. Even if you click to change the Product key, and you enter the one that is for your version, it still comes back with a goofy #. Is this normal, and why is this, for protection, etc.?

Also some time when I reboot when it loads up again my resolution is all messed up and the Icon are all messed up, not where they were before I rebooted. Every morning I start it up it is ok, just seems when I reboot for what ever reason.

A:Validation #'s

Thats right, because if someone logs on to your computer without your permission, it will be bad if he will see your product Key, because he can change it any time and that can remove your genuine Validation of Microsoft.... in other words you don't need to worry because this was only meant for corporate Licences

I just bought my copy last week. I got a digital download and the product key by email. I needed a program from Windows Marketplace and had to go through the validation product and had no problem with the process as it was validated.

This morning I noticed in the bottom right of the desktop that my copy of Windows wasn't genuine. Never having seen something like that I came on here and read some threads about the problem with rip-off copies.

Well to make this short I went back through and ran the validation program again and Microsoft says I have a good copy of Win 7 and that little notice disappeared.

I ran the MGADiag program and that says I have a valid copy. Is this something I have to worry about or should I inform Microsoft that a vender is selling bogus software?

A:Validation or Not?

I wouldn't make too much of that. Stuff happens, and it always works out.

If you successfully activated, and Windows is saying you have a genuine copy, that means you are all set.

Now, if the notice keeps coming up, let us know, and we'll try to figure it out.

So I built my own computer and purchased an OEM 3 pack of Vista 64 home premium from Amazon/TigerDirect. I installed it, and I am almost 100% I activated it in my system properties once I got to my desktop.

I have been running flawlessly for the last 2 weeks and all of a sudden I come home from work yesterday and there is a pop up saying that I may be "victim to software piracy" or something like that (it didnt say piracy but i forgot) and it prompts me to head to microsoft.com/genuine to validate or whatever. Problem is, when i get there, I can't validate and then it tells me to activate a certain service and try again and I can't activate the service.

Has this happened to anyone else? Do I just need to reinstall Vista?

A:Validation? Where did this come from?

Can you post the popup? It might be a Trojan Horse related popup to scare you into installing something. Microsoft would limit Vista features on an illegal copy or stop you from logging in. Did you call Microsoft to verify the license?

I think I found a similar post not so long ago, but for the life of me cant find it now.
I have borderlands on steam. I bought DLC, that installed fine. I started up Borderlands, and got a phone call at the same time from work, so my attention wasn't really on the game. At the validation box, where you need to put in the code that you get from steam, I boo-bbo'ed and pressed close as opposed to enter. When the game came up, I got a box saying I had DLC and need to validate it, or I couldn't play it. Fine, no problem. I close borderlands, restart it, and now there is no option to input the code. The only way I can think of is to uninstall and reinstall everything, which I really don't want to do, partly as I will probably lose my saves (yes, I know I can back them up somewhere) but mostly I don't want to tie up my connection for way too long downloading and faffing all over again, and even then I have no guarantee it will work.

It seems this applies to pretty much all DLC, but for me, I just want to get this damn thing running!

A:DLC Validation

Let's try activating the code in Steam.

At the top click on Games and choose Activate a product on Steam...

Type in the code supplied for your DLC.

Hopefully that works for you.

You can try to re-enter the Product ID using Magic Jelly Bean. You can also call the number for MS. There's one number that gets you validated by phone fairly quickly, otherwise you wait forever. I do not have a ASR disk either. I am kicking myself for not making one.

I have a different hard drive that I was able to load XP to without any problems when I hook it up so I don't think there are any problems with any of the hardware.

I would just like to be able to get my new hard drive working again.

Are you using the WMM that comes with Vista or is this the Windows Live Essentials WMM? If not the latter, I think you are eligible for it with Vista and you might try that version. to reduce the size of an image you just need an image editor of some description, the professional app of choice is of course photoshop, which has an extremely useful 'save for web' function that performs this task.

The more widely available (ie cheaper) app is paintshop pro, which you can d/l a demo from jasc.com.

I wouldn't be surprised however, if you existing kodak easyshare had some facility to reduce the (physical) size of an image, is there an option on one of the menus or toolbars to reduce the pixel size and/or the dpi resolution? You may find your photo is currently in several megapixels; the default maximum for the camera that took the photo. If it's just to be used for browsing onscreen, eg on a webpage or similar, then it only needs to be 72pdi which would save a massive amount of file space.

My acer Aspire 5738Z has a web cam called a crystal eye. when I downloaded windows 8 saw that it had a simple to use camera app. No matter how I try I cannot get it to work. I have tried every driver I can find even the ones on the Acer support page. I still get the response "camera not found" In fact this is a true statement because I
can't find where the camera is stored on my system. Any advice welcome. I never tried the camera until I changed to windows 8 so I am not sure if it ever worked.

A:not sure this is a windows 8 matter!!

So, my Nvidia card using coolbits overclocking tweak shows me this information on my graphic card

Why is it the OS thinks the AGP is at 2X ???

anyone see same type of thing
what do you make of it
is there some sort of fix for this.

I have the same thing using my
MSI board using GF6600 card
ASUS board using Ti4200 card

A:anyone get this or what it means, or any way to fix it for that matter ??

I have only heard of 8x card going down 4x when the AGP slot does not support it. The only thing I think of to suggest is you check you motherboards manual.

Hello, I am hoping you can help me. I have a Compaq laptop with Vista Home 32 bit running on it. Within the past week I have received 2 viruses, Windows Restore and Vista Manager. I have followed all the directions on your site and have run the following programs: Malware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Super Anti Spyware, CC Cleaner, and Ad Aware. Here are my issues now after all of the cleaning:

When I try to run Combofix I get a popup that my disk has errors and to run chkdsk. I have done a quick scan through the DOS promp and there are corrupt files so it doesnt finish completely. I have also tried to force it to fun upon reboot into Safe Mode but it does not scan, just boots up to safe mode. I have gone into disk properties and checked the boxes to run chkdsk upon reboot and then gone into the msconfig boot area and checked the box for Safeboot which has worked in the past but this time nothing, just boots into safe mode.

I have never had problems with chkdsk before and run it faithfully to keep my computer functioning. Any ideas? I would love to fix all the errors through chkdsk.

Leigh Anne

A:Cannot run Chkdsk no matter what I try

Maybe is it smart if you run an online scan.
Sometimes find an online Virus scan more than the standard Virus scan.
Also think I that it is smart when you have done, that you make a DDS log in the sub forum Am I infected.?
Tip: It is not really smart when you run a Hijackthis tool without experiences.

What is the preferred location to have WoW installed? It is currently installed under: c:/program files/World of Warcraft.

Should it be under program files(x86) or under the games folder? It is working perfectly right now where it is (just having issues with ventrilo).

A:Does it matter what folder????

It really doesn't matter where you install programs or games. I just use what the installer has pointed to unless I don't have any space left I go for a different drive.

What is happening with ventrilo.

A friend of my mother's asked me to look at her computer as she was having issues with it. Well, I got everything back up and working and then did updates to Windows (SP2, etc).

In the midst of installing some of these updates (after SP2), my child yanked the power cord out of the wall and down I went. When I went to reboot, I was given the option of Safe Mode, etc, but selected to boot normally. The XP logo came up and was fine, but then it went to a black screen and STAYED there. No white cursor..nothing. UGH. So I went to boot again. When given the same option, I tried safe mode. Well, I didn't get a black screen, but I got a string of DOS lines one after the other just sitting on the screen. I mean...line after line filled the screen.

The REALLY horrible part about this is there is no XP disc for this. I asked my mother's friend about this and she claims that when she bought the computer from Wal-Mart (HP), it didn't come with any CDs. I find that hard to believe, but whatever. SOOO..now I have no idea what to do. I mean, I do have my own Dell EOM CD for XP, but I can't use that to try and fix this, can I? It is just like NOTHING I do is working!

The computer is free of an virus activity, spyware, etc...I took all of that out.

I would appreciate if someone would explain the significance of DVD regions. I rented an old movie from my local library. When I tried to play it on my Windows 7 machine, there was a message that the DVD was purchased in region 1, my computer DVD drive was set for region 2, and I needed to change the region. Since there is a limited number of region changes that can be made, I decided not to make the change and did not watch the movie.
Would someone please explain the technical background as to why regions matter? And why did Microsoft decide to limit the number of region changes for Windows 7?

A:DVD regions - why do they matter?

1.  Just read what Wikipedia has to say about region codes yourself.
2.  If you use VLC Media Player it will play any region code DVD without a fuss.

I know that with a cassette tape, when you go down to the fourth or fifth generation, you can really hear the difference. The sound gets quite muffulled.

But what about CD-Rs?

Can I go down four or five generations and still maintain the same sound quality. I know there are rumours that digital CD-Rs make exact copies, but I thought I'd ask the tech gang to make sure.
