BSOD code 124 - Games crash to desktop and programs cause BSODs

Q: BSOD code 124 - Games crash to desktop and programs cause BSODs

Zip of dump files attached. This problem has been happening for approximately three months. I've not changed any hardware in that time. I've been using the same installation and same copy of Windows for approximately two years without issue.

Thanks very much for your help.

Preferred Solution: BSOD code 124 - Games crash to desktop and programs cause BSODs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Counterfeit installations such as yours contains heavily modified code that causes the installation to behave it unexpected ways. Analysing BSOD's and determining their causes on these sorts of installations is very unreliable.

My recommendation is to start with a clean slate, and install a genuine version of Windows. This will minimise the problems you are experiencing, and make subsequent diagnosis of BSOD's far more reliable.

Hello everyone,

I hope I can find some help here with these crashes I have since several months now.

While playing games like CS:GO or H1Z1, I have a lot of crashes to desktop and sometimes BSOD. The BSOD can happen also while watching streams & listening to music. So far, I had these ones : 0x1000007E / dxgmms1.sys+1DFA5 / 0x0000003B / atikmdag.sys+C4DE0.

I think I tried everything in my knowledge to solve the problem but it still didn't resolve the problems. On the hardware side :
- Switched the memory sticks ;
- Switched the graphic card (my brother has the same one as me and it never failed him. Still it didn't resolve the problems on my computer) ;
- Switched to Marvell SATA controllers then to the 3Gb Intel controllers ;
- Used a USB sound card thinking that it may have something to do with the audio on the motherboard;
- Changed the graphic card slot to the PCI 8X.

On the software side :
- I reinstalled all my drivers using the suggestions made by this site : Easily explore your PC & using also some other softwares like SlimDriver ;
- I formated & reinstalled win 7 on my SSD ;
- I installed win 7 on my HDD thinking that my SSD was the problem ;
- I uninstalled the KB3022345 and KB3068708 updates ;
- Uninstalled my antivirus (MSE) & disabled my firewall ;
- Used the sfc /scannow command without any problems detected ;
- Run malware bytes & antivirus softwares (mse, ESET);
- Run software like "fixmypc" & ccclea... Read more

Any help guys ? Does all these crashes have something to do with my motherboard ? Should I change it (the only thing I didn't change is the MB & the power supply).

Many thanks.

I built my PC in November of 2017 and have had the same problem with it for almost the entire time I have had it. Whenever I enter into a game, it crashes, or after a few seconds to a few minutes of playing it crashes to desktop, without a code.

There was a period of time (around three months) where my computer was working flawlessly. However then the same problem started up again. It started working again after I had been installing a motherboard speaker (because at that time the entire PC crashed occasionally). Then my problem was fixed, but after three months of smooth sailing, it wouldn't work again.

At this point in time, all of my games except for the original Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Minecraft (although Minecraft crashes to desktop as soon as it begins raining, while swimming, etc.) crash to desktop with this problem.

If I don't get any help from this site I am going to take my PC to an IT shop, and if THAT doesn't work I am going to sell it for parts.

My dxdiag will be attached.

Hi, I've had this problem for about 2 months now and I've looked in just about every corner of the interwebs for SOME kind of fix... to no avail. I've noticed that this problem has been posted here a few times too, but never really been fully diagnosed. (From the threads I've read through.)

So, before I go any further, I have run various diagnostic tests on my Hardware and found no errors. All my drivers are fully up to date. I've rolled back to older versions of drivers that I *know* work and they don't make any difference. I've swapped out my graphics card for a different one with no difference. I've swept my registry, and drivers before reinstalling. I've changed HDDs.

I'm not getting any BSOD. Every time I run a game, any game, it runs for anywhere from 5 to 30 mins before the program crashes with a general '***.exe has stopped working, do you wish to close it' error. Every single error report contains the same line 'Exception Code: c0000005'. I know this is a memory error, but according to my memtests, there is no problem. The only thing I have not swapped out is my RAM, which I have seen in some places as being a possible cause. It can't be the memory on the Graphic card as the same problem occurred after changing to a brand new card.

This crept up on me. Before the problem began, there were no updates (game or drivers) for weeks. Absolutely no hardware changes. No software changes. No changes in anything whatsoever. Then one day every game I played crashed.

A:C000005 Exception Code crash on all Games

These can be due to registry damage due to using registry cleaners. You say no hardware or software changes were made, but were you using a registry cleaner at the time. I saw that you mentioned sweeping the registry after uninstalling and re-installing games, so that leads me to wonder if your games and Windows software are damaged due to such activity.Many of us on the forums actually do not recommend automated optimization tools for Windows 7. Windows 7 does a much better job of handling its own optimization than its predecessors did. We especially do not recommend registry cleaning as an "optimization" step because automated registry cleaning causes more harm to the registry than it actually repairs.

In the future, if you need help optimizing Windows 7, please post a thread in Performance & Maintenance - Windows 7 Forums or follow the tutorial enclosed in that forum to Optimize Windows 7.

Hey all,
I'm having an issue with my ASUS F5GL laptop. If I try to launch a game like Counter-Strike: Source, Garry's Mod or Just Cause 2, not long after actually leaving the menu and beginning to play (anywhere between 2-5min), the whole laptop just silently crashes. I checked ALL the logs, and there is nothing in there, except something recorded at boot, saying the computer was not cleanly shutdown. When it does crash, a second before it crashes, a weird thin horizontal line appears in a random location on the screen, going all the way across the screen. This was happening under Windows Vista, but I just bought and did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium, and it's still happening. I have updated my drivers and it still happens. Hi. I've recently been trying to play Metal Gear Solid 5 but every time I boot it up my PC either crashes as soon as the splash screens are done or after a few minutes. It's been crashing while playing other games as well but it's been much rarer. It's not a BSOD crash and it doesn't produce any crash dumps so I'm leaning towards it being a problem with either the PSU, the motherboard or one of the graphics cards. Any help with finding the cause of this would be appreciated.
The PSU model is fd-psu-newt2-800, the graphics cards are both Nvidia GTX760s and the motherboard is a ASUS Sabertooth Z77

if anyone could help i would be theroughly apreciative.
as for what some of my problems are.
Random blue screen of deaths. with what look's to be rainbow-ish screen tearing right before (video card issue?)
some program fail to start. or while starting Crash/crash while useing them.
some programs that have NEVER had issue's suddenly  become unusable due to above reasons even after sucessfull reinstall's.
another issue though uncommon is Explorer.exe fails to work and needs to restart it's self.

My games now crash straight to the desktop now. GTA V, MGS V, Just Cause 3, very strange I don't know if it was a Windows update or something with Nvidia? I rolled back drivers and still the same, it was doing it before this update but out of the blue. It worked fine before, great frame rates.

If I shut down and start up and load Just Cause, it got to the menu, but crashed right after. Once it got a few seconds into the game but was running 10 fps never had that before.

Strangely I can run LEGO Jurassic World and Disney Infinity just fine. What could be wrong? Bad GPU?

A:Games Crash Right to Desktop Now

At least your's are crashing straight to the desktop! Still keeping a few very old titles running from 2000-2001 98-XP compatible now still running on the 64bit 10 lately one has been crashing not while playing but when going to exit seeing the program crash. And then finally the hard boot came when the entire desktop froze up solid with both displays seeing a black screen.

This is where you start looking at the programming structure for each game title and for which versions it was written for with some very exclusive to only a couple of them. Metal of Honor XP ONLY! Would not run on the 32bit Vista but somehow went on the 32bit 7 two versions later and ran. Some games liked 7 quite well but simply do not like anything newer! And then you start looking at a combination of factors.

You can have everything in Windows set up perfectly and some game will still crash not from some video or sound driver but a glitch in game's own encoding with 10 still being relatively new and those games titles needing patches still. 10 is still in need of seeing more updates to work out all the bugs in the OS while the game companies need to either come up with patches or sell you a newer 10 compatible version. It's a mixed bunch of things trying to sort out without any one absolute solution.

Hiya, apologies if this isn't quite in the right section or if I'm missing something.

For the past week or so, while playing games that can be taxing on a computer, the game will eventually hang and go into not responding mode. I'm typically able to alt-tab out, but any other program will also end up being not-responding. Task manager works, but is not able to end the processes. The computer will also not shut down except by force. I am able to play most other games that aren't difficult to run, for extensive periods of time without a problem. However, games such as Team Fortress 2 will eventually lead to the crash, albeit not at any consistent amount of playtime.

I've looked around on the internet, but found nothing helpful to my specific problem. I've also ran memtest86 for two passes without any errors.

If it's of any consideration, I recently disassembled my laptop to clean it out, as there was some nasty dust buildup causing it to run far too hot. There have been no other problems after the fact, except for what I've detailed.

If there's anything else that would be helpful that I can provide, please let me know. Thanks so much for any help!

My first reaction if your games are crashing is to check that you are using the latest DirectX 9.0c. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

If they still crash, then download and install the latest driver for your video card.

I have recently built this system from some new parts I ordered and some existing parts. I freshly formated, installed XP, updated XP, installed latest 4-in-1's, Latest Vid Drivers (56.72WHQL), latest RAID driver (Though I am not using RAID), latest soundmax driver, and so on...

I installed DAoC (Dark Age of Camelot), patched the game, and fired it up. Within 30 seconds I got 0x50 BSoD. I rebooted and tried again, this time I simply got crash to desktop, and it was after maybe 10 minutes. So I started turning things off: Fast Writes-Off, memory timings reduced (2.5-3-3-6), No Overclocking (Always been this way), etc. Went to run DXDiag, and got a BSoD 0x8e (0xc5,...,...,0) Which flags a driver as the issue. Reboot, and re-run DXDiag it states that a problem occured initializing directshow and offered to skip this, so I took the offer. Ran all tests for video, all passed. Still can't play games... Any ideas?

Here is what I have ruled out:
Faulty RAM - Ran Memtest86+ w/ no errors, used a physical ram tester w/no errors, and ran Prime95 for several hours w/ no errors.
Faulty Video Card - Replaced with exact same card, still occurs.
Faulty OS install - I have reinstalled.
Out-of-Date Drivers or OS - All the latest installed.
Fast Writes - Turned off
Mem Timings too strict - Turned down (They auto set this low CL2.5-3-3-6, but can prolly run as tight as CL2-2-2-2)
Heat - System runs cool, 39C average,

I can Post msinfo32 or DXDiag if that would be helpful, figured I&#... Read more

So got a bit of a problem, my GTX 670's drivers keep crashing and I cant work out why

Basically it crashes when ever I do anything, open Firefox, crash, open Rift, crash, start Windows, crash.

I did replaced the TIM on my card (MX-4) a couple of weeks ago (not the first time I've removed the cooler on this card) as I was worried about how hot the card was getting and how hot it was getting my CPU WC loop, over 80? on most days, it ran fine for over a week then started playing up out of no where

Cant work out if its the actual card or just all the crap in Windows . I've attached the Windows crash log thing although it hasnt BSOD

Hi, I bought a new laptop and it has a problem i discovered. I cannot return the laptop as it already past the returning date (30days). The problem is discovered last week after i installed lots of games.

My laptop crashes at full screen mode on any games i installed. At first I blamed the game, but after installing lots of games and tried every single one of them (age of empires3, medieval2tw, COD, black and white 2, red alert3, etc.). After this, I also tried to use some 3d programs like the ones built with the latest Nvidia SDK with Direct3d 11 and still crashes. The crash (to be specific) is almost a crash to desktop (CTD) BUT, weirdly, it loads itself back and then loops again more like alt+tabing when ur in game(it's not sticky keys). However, the 3d programs like the one in NVIDIA doesn't ''alt+tabs'', it's a complete crash and the windows will then try to resolve it (which fails). It's a bit powerful laptop and here are my specs:
Windows 7 Home Prem 64bit
Core 2 duo t6600 2.20ghz
4gb ram ddr3
1gb Nvidia Geforce gt 240m
Supported by PhysX but Games requires DirectX so I installed it. Would it clash? I dont think so, coz you can turn off the physX gpu. and i tried that.
1tb HDD
Now, the things that I have tried are:
Update/install my video card driver, chipset and was going to update my BIOS (which is the latest so that's why i did not).
Installed the directX 11 (SDK), and even tried the Direct x 9.0c.

The problem is, you are playing for 5-10 minutes, the screen goes black, shows the desktop for a second, black again, the monitor display says INPUTVI then you are back in the game. A minute later it happens again, then again until finally crashing the game

I have tried shutting down processes and services that might be grabbing control of the active screen, still happens.
I have tried turning off Aero, screensavers etc in fact turning all the setting in system>performance to off (best performance) still happens.
I have got the latest the NVIDIA and DirectX drivers. Still happens.
I have tried a different monitor. Still happens.
I have tried running the games on lower resolution, and run as administrator with different compatibility settings for windows versions. Still happens.

As you can see, I have tried a lot of things, and I am out of answers. If anyone sorts this out for me I will bake you a cake and have it shipped to you wherever you are on the globe, even Burkina Faso.

A customer of mine is having trouble with a remote desktop connection. When he opens the connection and enters his login details and hits connect RDP crashes. I tried turning off local resources like printers but it didn't help. The code in the event log is 0xc0000374 and i managed to make a crash dump but i'm not really sure how to read it properly. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

A:Remote desktop crash error code 0xc0000374

Ok so after doing some reading i figured out how to read the dump file (i think i did it right anyway ) and it turns out that error was a "heap corruption" which was caused by "BLEtokenCredentialProvider.dll" Which turned out to be a driver for a bluetooth dongle plugged into the laptop. Once we removed the bluetooth software everything was working again.

For example: If I create an Excel file and try to save it to my desktop, when I click "File" then "Save As" and then click on my desktop icon, Excel freezes and crashes, same with Microsoft Word. If I open a program such as MS Word or Adobe Acrobat, and navigate to my desktop to open a file, the programs freeze and then crash when I click on the desktop icon.

I can save files to other locations on my PC such as "My Documents" or some other file I create, and I can open files from locations other than my desktop. The crashes only seem to be related to the Desktop. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I am running a rather new PC and this issue has been going on for a while, I was left to guess that it was a under powered PSU until today when I upgraded it to 850w.
I am running the following;
CPU: AMD FX 8350
GPU: Nvidia GTX 980
MOBO: Asus m5a97 le r2.0
RAM: GSKILL Ripjaws X 2x4gb
Storage: Samsung EVO 850 250gb and WD Caviar Blue 1TB

Now Ive updated my PC before when trying this to no avail. Checked all my drivers and even uninstalled them. Ive got a new CPU just need to get new MOBO to test and see if MOBO is faulty. Ive also replaced the GPU since I purchased 2 initially. The BSOD's happen mostly when playing AAA games like BF4, GTA etc etc. Games that are graphically intense. I can play ARMA 3 and crash once and a while. I also crash if I am say rendering a video. Pretty much if the PC ramps up, I crash.

Hello, for some time now I've had a problem with my programs (Mostly video games and applications), I do not know how this happened but when I enter certain video games or other programs that involve graphics the windows of said games will constantly blip white for a moment as if unresponsive leaving it completely unplayable. I've investigated further by my own accord and discovered that under the Task Manager and applications tab when I have myself tabbed out on my desktop said program will be jumping back and fourth from running to not responding or others just simply say not responding. I figured this would be a DirectX issue or some sort but when I run DxDiag it says that everything is completely fine, as of this moment I am completely at a loss of what to do or how to resolve this issue. Today was when I called it quits and decided to post here in hopes that there is a solution other then just wiping my OS to a fresh install due to again when in a program, the entire screen went completely white, things were responding but I could not visually see anything at all. A quick restart was all I needed but I could really use some help. Thank you so much for your time.

Update Atheros AR8121/AR8113 PCI-E Ethernet Controller:

l1e51x86.sys Wed Aug 05 01:49:35 2009

There's something I ask you to clarify, how come you have both via audio and creative labs? Perhaps removed your creative card but still having its drivers left? If so uninstall all Creative software and drivers and sweep its remnants with the Driver Sweeper:

Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

-> viahduaa.sys Tue Jun 02 04:52:36 2009 (VIA)
-> monfilt.sys Wed Jan 04 02:41:48 2006 (Creative)

Your report shows your audio is VIA, so update VIA Audio audio card driver:

This issue has been aggravating me for a while and I really want it to be taken care of. Since I bought this computer, mostly all my games have been crashing on me, and I'd say about 90% of the games I play just randomly crash or gives me the blue screen of death, most often the blue screen of death.

Here are my specifications as I'm sure that someone will be asking for it:

4 Gb of OCZ RAM
i5 750 2.7GHz
XFX Radeon HD 5870
MSI P55-GD65 mobo
1 Tb of HDD memory...

Running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, using Corsair H50 liquid cooling as my main source of cooling and a Silverstone Strider 1000W PSU. GPU is always updated to its latest, BIOS has never been updated (still at 1.1 or something, I've seen the site and there's an option about updating it to 1.7 but I've heard bad things about updating BIOS), and my CPU is usually 29 ?C, sometimes spiking to something like 38 ?C for a few seconds when I'm gaming. I know a virus isn't causing this because I've wiped my hard drive a few times already.

If you guys need anymore information, please ask...

Hello all.
I am new to these forums and need some help. Many of the other posts are of BSOD's, but mine is different. Outside of games my computer performs and runs perfectly fine and same with games, until recently.

Just recently (no, i have not installed ANYTHING) my computer started crashing during games only. It's wierd because normally people get BSOD, but in my case i get repeating sound and still image. Even if i let it sit there for a while it still doesnt give me a blue screen. I am forced to reboot using my reset button. At first it was only with CoD2, which i thought it was specific only to that game, but the other day i was playing EQ2 and the sound froze and image froze. The sound, lets say of me slashing, keeps repeating.

I have the latest drivers for my Graphics card and for my sound card and dont know why this started happening. The wierd thing is that i havent installed anything. Ive diagnosed my HD and nothing comes up, ive scanned my comp and its clean, ive yet to check the ram but willdo tonight. I hope its not the ram, and its compatible w/my Mobo (checked before i bought it). Ill try updating as many drivers as possible, but again... it shouldnt be this because it ran perfectly earlier with these drivers.

Ive had a chipset problem on my mobo a long time ago, but doubt it was this because that was about 2 months ago and games have been running fine afterwards (of course, until now). Also, Ive had SP2 from the getgo, so it shouldnt b... Read more

I recently put together my first computer and everything has been going wonderfully, up until I started playing games.
The other night I was playing an online FPS and the computer suddenly crashed and I got a blue screen with an error message that dissapeared too fast for me to read.
However I've gone and attached the minidump file in my post.
The problem has returned 4 times already and I'm starting to get worried, I'm not quite sure what to do.
It only happens when I play games though, which is different from the other posts I've read...

If anyone could help me out, I'd very much appreciate it! ;3

I run at 1600 x 900 16:9 widescreen resolution, which is what my monitor is made for. This means I can stack 8 desktop icons/shortcuts vertically. But I don't keep a full flood of icons on there(it's 7 x 4 right now). This does not always happen but about 50% of the time when I play a fullscreen game in which the resolution is set lower, I exit the game to find my desktop icons scattered all over, pushed down and such. The only "cure" I know is to stack a full set of 8 icons vertically but either way, this is getting really annoying. Can I just lock the icons in place?

I used Blue Screen View and it seems to source ntoskrnl.exe as the main culprit though others like blbdrive.sys and win32k.sys have also showed up.

Recently my computer has begun to crash in the middle of games (Counter strike and League of Legends). The crash happens abruptly while playing, the screen tears the image completely where nothing on the screen is now identifiable, just shreds of the image/colors/pixels. The PC then stops all tasks and continues to run with the frozen image on the screen with no sound or anything running. I have to hard reset and hold the power button. The computer runs fine right after, a slow boot up at most. I know my CMOS battery is dying due to the clock on my computer losing time. Is could that be a problem linked to this?

I'd appreciate any help. Thank you.

Hi there,

I recently built a new PC and since then have been plagued with BSOD restarts when playing games (namely Skyrim, Saints Row 3, smaller less intensive titles don't seem to be affected e.g. minecraft, atom zombie smasher). It seemingly happens at random anywhere from at the start of the game, to a few hours in.

I have checked GPU temperature and that comes back at between 50and 60 degrees at the time of the crash which is apparently fine according to the card specs (max temp: 100 degrees).

I am running:
? Windows 7
? x64
? Retail version
? Hardware and OS < 3 months old

? CPU: Intel i5-2500K
? GPU: Nvidia GeForce 550Ti
? MotherBoard: ASUS P8Z68-M PRO
? Power Supply: CiT 750W

I have also included the autoruns output, even though the instructions said to download it but never said to run it.

Thanks in advance for any help,

I only have to look at a number of these to notice a very specific pattern. All of them seem to be occurring as TDR failures. This is when your video card drivers fail to respond to DirectX in a timely manner and will force DirectX to reset the driver in order to recover it. Often times this can work, though in worse cases it will attempt to do this multiple times in succession, tripping a BSOD after a few tries since it notices it hasn't resolved the issue.

In your case, however, this is not happening. Rather, when attempting to even reset the driver, that in itself has failed. It means the driver has absolutely no intention of stopping and Windows is not having a good time trying to fix it. As a result, there is an immediate BSOD.

You can review this article to get a good idea of possible causes of TDR failure and potential diagnostics and remedies you can do to ascertain and resolve the issue. If you want my immediate position on the matter, I've noticed all of these are occurring when dealing with the VirtuWDDM.sys driver, which to my understanding is the driver used to mix both GPU power of the Sandy Bridge with that of a discrete, separate video card (LucidLogix's Virtu). It's dated from June, so you may wanna update it. Otherwise, you may be forced to uninstall and not utilize it until they work out the kinks. Again, that's just immediate speculation, given the consistent pattern of this BSOD.

Well this, as I can see from this forum is quite a big issue with Windows, and it is annoying as well, when your computer crashes everytime when you try to play a game. Anyway, I am going to point this out from the beginning, I am not an expert in computers, so I would need some help. I got this BSOD everytime when I try to play a game, or when I try to load a game. The code is as follows (this is the information you get after the computer restarts)

BCCode: d1
BCP1: 00000054
BCP2: 00000002
BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: 9765C2A7
OS Version: 6_1_7600
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 256_1

As I read from Internet, this is usually related to drivers not working properly, but I don really understand hot it goes.
I have a Compaq presario Cq61, Intel Pentium Dual Core T4200 2.0GHz, NVIDIA GeForce G 103M 512MB, Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit.

If anyone could help me find the problem and maybe solve it, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you!

Hi there, over the last few months my laptop has been frequently crashing when playing games such as Counter Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2, Starcraft 2, as well as others. I'm not exactly sure what is wrong with my computer since it should be capable of handling all of these programs.

It is Windows 7 Home Premium 64.
It is OEM.
The computer and OS Instillation are a bit over a year old.
