Turn-on won't turn on my computer...

Q: Turn-on won't turn on my computer...

Hi everyone,

While turning on my computer the it turns on, fans are starting to move, but screen won't turn on, and the beep of the bios is not heard.

pressing the sleep/reset button next to the turn-on button computer goes off, pressing it again turns on the computer without any problem. (now I'm working with the same computer) i thought maybe it's the power supply that gives me problem but changed between computers, this still gives me trouble and other computer works good (besides its many problems ). any idea what to do?

Thanks in advance
Chaim.

BTW, while trying to write this thread I got all this terms that i didn't know how to call in English, like power supply - is that the box which connects to the power and to all the m-board and drives? is there an English computer terms dictionary?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a bit of a strange issue with my computer. Forgive me if I'm a little too descriptive, but I'm not sure which details are relevant and which are not for such a problem. First, the specs:

Model: eMachines T2984
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Celeron D Processor 340, 2.93 GHZ, 256K L2 Cache, 533 MHZ FSB
Power Supply Unit: Bestec Model: ATX-250-12E REV: P7
Motherboard: I can't tell, but it appears to be an Intel motherboard by the number of Intel labels on it
RAM: 512 MB DDR SD originally, added 1 GB a couple of months ago
Let me know if you need anything else...

Yesterday, I got home from shopping around 1PM, and I tried to start the computer. I pushed the power button, and nothing happened. I checked all of the cords, and they were all plugged in. Not knowing what else to do, I opened up the case to see if there was something obviously wrong. The only thing that I noticed (other than a bunch of dust) was that the power supply unit was still hot. I shut the computer down about 5 hours earlier after about 20 minutes of use, so it seemed strange that the power supply was still hot. I unplugged the computer just in case there was some sort of fire hazard.

At this point, I called a friend who suggested that the problem might be with the motherboard or the power supply unit.

A few hours later, I plugged it back in to try to get it to work. As soon as I plugged it in, the entire unit suddenly started "running" by itsel... Read more

A:Computer Doesn't Turn on, Fans and Some Lights Turn on Automatically

I would suspect that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is going south. If you have a spare one laying around, install it and see if the problem goes away.
You can buy a new, better PSU from Newegg for about $40.00. I have used a Thermaltake 430 watt in one of my machines for some time now and it works well.
You will have to check the size of your PSU to be sure a new one will fit into the eMachine.
Here's the page with that PSU on it. It's the last one on the list.

I just put together my first computer 6 months ago. It abruply shutdow in the middle of writing a paper for school. I couldn't turn it back on right away. after trying a few times, it turned on. All the fans are working even the fan on the power supply, the motherboards lights are on. My graphic card in on the motherboard. I think it might be my power supply because when I first put it together I didn't plug in the smaller power connection to the motherboard and the same thing is happening, black screen. It's like my computer isn't giving my monitor any feed. I will have more info when I get home. I can't get in to bios or safe mode.

I am using a client computer that is connected to a modem via a LAN cable which is in a neighboring house as far as about 50 meters. The host computer is there. The host computer is only using Internet Connection Sharing (without a router) to share its Internet connection with me. Within this network there are only two computers, the one I use (as client) in my house and the other one is the host computer as I mentioned earlier.

How do I know that the host computer is being turned on or off?

The purpose is to know so that I can use all the bandwidth from the modem when the host computer is not turn on. Because there are no restrictions on bandwidth from the host computer, and I just wanted to use all the available bandwidth only when the host computer is not turned on.

Both computers use Windows 7.

after serching all night to find out why his computer is in limbo, i leave my brother's house without finding needed help. his computer won't turn off...the fan, a couple little lights until he unplugs it from the wall. first, the computer did a restart all by itself, he said, then it would not turn on, except the fan and little lights inside that won't turn off. he took out the hard drive and it functions in his other computer...he puts the hard drive back into the new computer and it will not turn on or completely turn off that fan. he tried the "hold the on/off button for at least five seconds" step and nothing changes. he has had the computer for a year and a half, so he really wants to figure this out. how can he even get it to turn on so he could do a safe start up? so far we cannot find a way to troubleshoot. he have checked the cords, perhaps there was a freeze up that began this loop and that's why the fan stays on? please say this is something you have heard of and there may be a solution. the advice we have found usually goes back to buying a new computer. thanks in advance, tea

Just got a new to me P3 computer up and running. Sometimes during star up it does not recognize the PS2 keyboard. Which makes it hard to go into my password protected User ID. When trying to shut down it will keep a few things running like some fans and the CD drive. But it does not sound like the Hard Drive is spinning.

If I use the XP to shutdown it goes into this limbo stage of neither off nor on, same goes for the power button on the front of the computer. It will either start up the computer or turn it to the limbo mode. Upon starting up, I can use the mouse to get it all the way into a non password protected XP users screen but can't do anything without the keyboard working. In the process of setting up I have had everything working earlier today but this keyboard and limbo status has been an intermitent problem. What should I try?
Thanks

Ad-Hoc requires that you restart the session each time.

Connectify pro has an auto start option that does this but it's a paid version, connectify lite is free but I'm not sure if has auto start.

So I have already tried the solutions such as boot up the pc and press shift and such to get a menu and then download somthing on a usb and get into an administrator account. The Administration account I can at least log onto as it's not password protected but I still can't turn on Wi-Fi which basically defeats my whole purpose of using the computer as I use it for gaming. So regarding me not being able to log into my actual account, I've tried resetting my password multiple times without success. I think it's due to the fact that I am not able to connect to any Wi-Fi spots (which I assume is because of safe mode which I can't turn off for some reason) And that brings me to my next point, of I can't connect to Wi-Fi die to safe mode. I have tried to turn off safe mode in the settings but when I press the button for it to turn off it slides back over to the on side. Please let me know if you have any other solutions that I have not tried yet, Thanks !

Wife updated Norton twice and had two Norton Firewalls and Windows Firewalls running together. Paid twice for the 2 updates. Removed Norton Completely and then re-installed Norton 360 Security Version 5, but am still unable to turn off Windows Firewall under Windows XP Pro and also cannot turn on Automatic updates, getting message "we're Sorry, the Security Center could NOT change your Automatic Windows Update setting. To try changing these settings, go to SYSTEM in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates Tab, select AUTOMATIC (recommended) and then click OK. None of this works, then tried using an app to reset Security Settings and that didn't work either. Any suggestions on what I try next. I would like to reinstall Norton 360 Internet Security Version 5, I know there are those out there that hate Norton and the overhead that comes with it, but over the years I've gotten used to it and I like it very much. Hello Folks,

I'm not sure if my issue is with hardware (possibly MB?) or graphics card, so please forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section. The first problem I was having was random blue screens of death that displayed graphic card driver issues. I was able to remedy that by updating my graphic drivers and have not had an issue since.

However, ever since then I have been running into another hardware or graphics-related issue that is random and completely stumping me. What is happening is, I will be on my computer, leave and turn my monitor off, and (randomly) when I come back to use my computer again, when I turn on the monitor there is no signal and a black screen (e.g. when I turn my monitor on my desktop will pop up and the light on my monitor will turn blue, when it doesn't turn on there will be a black screen and the light on the monitor stays yellow as if it is idle). I have tried swapping out the monitor to see if that was the issue and the same problem persists, so it does not appear to be my monitor or VGA cables.

The only way I can temporarily fix this issue is to reboot/restart my computer and viola! The monitor works again and I can see everything. This issue is very random. Sometimes I can go weeks without an incident, other times this is happening a couple times a week. I honestly don't know if it's my motherboard or video card or what. My PC isn't overheating, I'm not overclocking, and all of my drivers are updated.

I'm not sure what... Read more

Can anybody tell me how to fix this please ? I really don't know how it happened. Can it be that my laptop is still infected ?

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

This is driving me crazy. My HP has Windows 7 and everytime it connects to the internet (wireless connection) Windows Live Messenger opens down in the left hand corner taskbar near the start menu. I close it, and fifteen minutes later it will open again.
I opened the options and unchecked the boxes pretaining to 'Run Windows Live Messenger when windows starts' but it still repeatedly opens. I use hotmail, but i really have no use for Messenger. The program is not listed under add/remove programs. Someone please help me turn this thing off.

I can't turn my computer on. The fans and lights turn on for a second and then turn off. a few seconds later they'll turn back on and then turn back off. I've had this computer for 4+ months now, i built it myself. it recently started doing this but i'd just turn off the PSU (Power Supply Unit) and turn it back on and it woould fix it. now it doesnt fix it anymore. i've re-slotted the RAM (Random Access Memory) and pushed it in firmly, but that hasn't done anything. i've tried different power outlets and pushed everything into the MOBO (Motherboard), i havent messed around with CPU (Processor) because that's just a pain in the a**... i was wondering if there was anything else i could do before having to take it into a local repair shop, lol.

as for my computer specs

CPU (Processor): Fx-6300 AMD
GPU: R9-270x AMD
RAM (Random Access Memory): 8GB Ballistix sport
MOBO (Motherboard): ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
PSU (Power Supply Unit): Corsair X500 w 80+
Case: Rosewill GALAXY

thanks

A:Fans turn on, lights blink and then turn off/on repeatedly.

First, I would unplug everything that isn't necessary. Everything external except for the keyboard and monitor. Internally, just leave the CPU, RAM and video card installed. See if it turns on. If not, you might try and test the power button. Disconnect the power button from the mobo. If the pin headers allow for it, use the reset button as the power button. If not, you can use a flat head screwdriver to power on the computer (cross the two pins for the power button with the blade of the screwdriver). If you do this, just be very careful. Touch only the power button pins and nothing else! You could easily damage components by touching the screwdriver to the wrong thing.

Some motherboards have a power button right on the board that you can press to power on the computer. I looked at a pic of your board and didn't notice one.

If that doesn't do it, plug the power button back in. You might try and play around with the RAM. I don't know if you have 2 or 4 sticks of RAM, but try and boot the computer with only one stick of RAM at a time. If there's a bad stick, you'll find it through this process of elimination.

If none of the above works, then it might be a bad PSU.

If I unset "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" on the Power Management tab of my USB Root Hub properties, then when I attempt to restart my computer from the Start Menu, Windows shuts down but the computer itself keeps running,
i.e. the power light stays lit and the fan continues to run. In order to actually shutdown, I have to press the power button for a few seconds. Upon reboot, there is no indication of a failed shutdown from Windows. However, I am able to shutdown from the Start
Menu without problem.
Is this really the intent of not allowing the computer to turn off a device connected to a USB port, i.e. you can shutdown but you can't restart? Seems a bit arbitrary to me.

Good day!

My cousin asked me to troubleshoot the problem of his desktop. He was telling me that it is not turning on. I was caught by surprise when i turned on the PC when suddenly I heard some kind of explosion. It sounds like a blown capacitor or something to that effect. I immediately unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. I checked all the capacitors and looking for any damage and fortunately it's all ok. I smell the PSU to check if there's any short circuit occured and there was no foul odor or something. I removed the PSU from the casing for and opened it for inspection. I found out that the fuse exploded and broke into 2 pieces. I don't bother to repair it but instead I bought a new 700 watts PSU.

After replacing the PSU I turned on the PC but i found out that the CPU fan will spin for half a second and turn off. Led green light is on but no post or beep sound. I did some troubleshooting and these are as follows:

1. I removed the motherboard from the casing and put it on top of the table with cardboard underneath.
2. Clean the RAM stick and tried on other slot.
3. Clean CPU heatsink and fan since it was clogged by dirt and replace thermal paste.
4. Replaced the CMOS battery and move jumper pin 1-2 to 2-3 for about 2 minutes.
5. I turn on the PC without the video card, hardisk and keyboard.

SPECS:
Motherboard: asus h81m-c
CPU: Intel core I7
RAM: 8gb

Btw, prior to the above steps, right after replacing PSU I just clean the RAM and turn it on but ... Read more

However when it restarts, it never gets to start up and there is the same dark screen- no display.  I have to always update BIOS, take out the battery and AC adapter, put them back in, and then it will start. This just started happening. My T420s won't turn on using ON button -- it blinks a bit but nothing happens -- but it will turn on if I push and hold down the down-arrow button. The only problem is I have to keep holding the down-arrow button down. As soon as I lift off the down-arrow button it crashes. Wierd I know. Any ideas? I mainly want to use this laptop in the expansion tray with an external monitor so I am thinking of trying to put a pad on the down arrow button that a closed top will hold down but this is a bit of a kluge...

OK ... first I gotta know .... what made you try holding down the down-arrow key?    Does the T420s have the "paper clip reset" hole on the bottom? This is the procedure for an X1:  https://is.wfu.edu/help-articles/hard-reset-for-lenovo-x1-carbon/ My T440s and T480 both have the hole....the hole is not in the same place on all the machines of course, but you get the idea.Or maybe you already tried this trick?

My computer will not turn on at all. I installed windows media center 2005, then the ATI All in Wonder 2006 edition video card. Everything was workin fine but i was playing around with the TV tuner and trying it with the software that came with the video card and trying it with the media center program, so it wouldn't work after a while , so I shutdown my PC last night, i tried to turn it on this morning and nothing happens, i opened up the PC and the motherboards sleep mode light is on, so i dunno whats wrong with it, but it think the power supply is OK. PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks
I have a:
ASUS P4S8x-x motherboard
P4 2.4 GHz processor
384 MB of Ram
80 Gb hard drive
my previous video card was a Nvidia 64mb card

A:Help!!! My computer will not turn on....

i think you probably have a faulty power supply. also did you have the computer on surge protection...?

so basically you push the power button and Absolutely nothing happens? the lights don't even flash or anything?

I am not sure what happened, but this is the story. My son put together a new computer for me. I wanted to keep the old one for the kids for school and older games. He transferred some info from the old hard drive to the new, and put the old one back. I turned on the old computer and it started up and ran fine, but I noticed a rhythmic clicking the whole time it was on. The nest day we used it again and there was no clicking. The third time we tried to turn it on, nothing. No power at all. I had a feeling the computer was on it's last legs, that's why my son put together a new one. It had been making a lot of noise for many months. I don't know where it was coming from, but it was kind of a grinding sound. It did not do it all the time either. I would really like to get it running again so it could be used any ideas as to where to start? Is it the power? Is it the motherboard? Is it the hard drive? Is there a way to check these things before purchasing new ones? Thanks!

It sounds like the power supply. Most computer shops will test your power supply for a small fee. If it's just going to be a beater computer, then a cheap power supply will suffice for about $30.00. Make sure it outputs at least 350W though.

Computer will not turn on.  Sounds like it is starting, but screen won't turn on and computer stops making noise, doesn't sound like it running anymore.  But the power light stays on.   Already plugged and unplugged all power cords and power strip, still nothing.  Worked fine yesterday.

Hey, looking for some help here.

Recently while I wasn't home the power went out, and when I came back, my computer won't turn on. The light on the computer just flashes between orange and being off. I do have a surge protector. I tried plugging the computer power cord directly into the wall, but that didn't help. Is my computer fried? Are any parts of it likely still good? Does it probably have nothing to do with the computer? Any ideas? Thanks!

try plugging the charger in and removing the battery from the bottom then try turning it on again as you normally would

I have an old Dell Dimension XPS that won't turn on.

This morning, I pushed the power button as usual. The processor light blinks as usual, but after about 45-60 seconds, the light stops blinking. The power light remains on, the fans are running but the computer fails to boot.

In the past, it took upwards of 2-4 minutes for the computer to boot up. Now... nothing.

I've unplugged the power supply, held the power button for upwards of 2 minutes and still nothing.

I need to try to do the repairs myself as my cash flow won't allow anything else at this time.

Initial research suggests a faulty power supply, however, the computer power light is on and the fans are running. Someone suggested the monitor, but when I power that up, the initial information screen still comes on.

Other research says a motherboard. Are there steps to check before replacing the motherboard?

Thanks for help and insight!

I go to turn it on, the fans start up and the computer seems asif it's going to boot for 6 seconds, then for 4 seconds it stops and tries again... It repeats this process over and over. It also makes a clicking noise which i don't know where is from whilst it is trying to boot.

I think my PSU might have just broke but i'm really not sure. I haven't added anything to the computer for it to need more power. One thing i WAS thinking was that, i filled up my hard drive, but even when it was full i had turned it off and on and it worked, just 24hours after that... Is the problem likely to be a PSU because i don't want to buy one and not be able a refund?

Help me please as i'm really needing my computer back to apply for jobs and other research.

So when I got home from work the other day my computer was turned off. (it is always on) I went to turn it back on and it will not turn on. Well it turns on in the sense that the lights come on and the fan in the back starts up but that only lasts for about 3 seconds then it shuts off again. After that it just keeps trying to start up but it's the same thing only for about 3 seconds. Does anyone know what the cause of this might be?

My computer will not turn on at all. I checked the power supply unit and it is working fine. Where do I go next, what do I check? People have told me it is probably my motherboard but I'm sure there are other things I could check to make sure it is not something else. Or should I go somewhere to have it checked Help!

A:Computer won't turn on?

I have had the same prob with my old motherboard which was due to an on board switch system hence it very much sounds like you MOBO. Is it just an oldish MOBO or quite new Cheers PCPAUL. PS. (I may have a MOBO spare soon as am upgrading as I type)
