I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good morning dcb. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support forum - Vista!

I would suggest that you first check the Device Manager and look for any yellow or red signs indicative of a driver issue.

Also check the display settings and related functions such as the resolution and flicker rate. I have enclosed a screen shot with instructions to get to the Display Settings screen.

I don't have anything else for you at this time; however, should I come across and applicable information, I will certainly pass it on.

One question, though, you said that SOME web pages are smaller? Not all?

If you have any additional questions or concerns regarding Vista, please start a new thread for new subject matter.

I know that there have been a number of posts on this subject none of which, unfortunately, have helped.

I have downloaded and installed Microsoft's SyncToy 2.1 and found it to be very useful, but I cannot adjust any of the prog's default window settings. In most cases this would not be a major problem. Here however, when certain windows open, menu buttons are out-of-sight below the bottom of the screen requiring that the window must be shifted vertically to access them.

I have tried all the Tutorial tips, but with no success. Guidance would be much appreciated.

Maybe during installation there was a glitch and some bytes of a file were dropped. Try uninstalling then re-installing. Can you press the CTRL>+or-keys to size the page?

I have an HP Pavillion Slimline with a Windows 7 operating system. Unlike previous computers, everything has been fine for the past year or so. Any little problems I have found easy to correct. But recently my printer started printing everything in a larger font. I've tried everything I know to change this, such as print preferences, properties, preview, etc. with no luck. Can anyone advise?

I'm trouble shooting an issue I'm having with my DVD drive, it's just not reading the DVD. It reads other DVDs fine, and the DVDs I'm trying to run works fine on other systems.

I have some instructions to do what I want to try, but it seems they're for Windows 9x, so the option isn't in the same place as XP.

In the event that your CD-ROM drive cannot read the CD, you may want to reduce the buffer and optimization settings on your CD-ROM drive. To do this, right-click on My Computer. Select Properties, select the Performance tab, select the File System, and select CD-ROM. Decrease the Supplemental Cache Size and set the optimization to No Read-Ahead.

I looked around the web for a little bit, and I can't find anything similar for XP. Help anyone?

I am one of a handful of network administrators in a medium sized business network. We try to give everyone a good degree of freedom, and as such everyone gets poweruser privilages. This, ofcourse, creates spyware problems that we are presently flighting. We use Windows roaming profiles for everyone, and that seems to be working pretty well. The one major issue is that we upgraded to NAV Corprate 9.0 recently, and with it's new "threat detector" (looks for spyware related files) it's been tripping over these junk spyware files left in the IE cache part of each profiles (which isn't saved back the server). It's pretty handy to know what machines have issues ahead of time. Our procedure seems pretty standard for spyware cleanup. Restart in safemode with networking, delete all roaming profiles from the machine (saves tons of time on the scans), load up Ad-Aware and clean, load up spybot and do the same, then schedule daily updates and immunizations with spybot. The problem comes when deleting the profiles; With the default allocated cache size of 10% of the disk capacity, we are seeing these files come over 1Gig+ for each profile. This is a huge time drain to watch crap get deleted, so I want to figure out how to reduce the cache to something reasonable, like 50megs.

I am fairly certian that the cache size is not being determined by some sort of config file in the profile, as it seems to vary from machine to machine (we run Dell 150's through ... Read more

I have had my laptop for nearly half a year now and I just recently found an HDMI cable in an old junk box that can be connected from my widescreen Samsung DLP to my Laptop. The problem is that when I set my TV to be the main display the task bar does not fit on screen and I can barely see it. Another problem is when I play my games or watch videos they also appear to be bigger then what my screen is. I cant even see the exit or minus button when I make my windows/browsers in full screen. I have tried changing the screen resolution, but that doesn't work either. I then thought it might be my TV but it does not give my the option to change its aspect ratio.

I there solution to my little problem? Like a download or a program that is naturally in the computer that can adjust the aspect ratio (not resolution) manually for extended displays? And the resolution is on its recommended settings by the way.

A:I need help with adjusting my screen.

What is the graphics card on your laptop? Both AMD and nVidia cards have overscan options in their software which should give you the capability to adjust your display size manually until it fits. Also check that you're outputting the correct resolution for your TV.

First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.

Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.

So I bought a new netbook for work travel recently and loaded a program that I need to use. Program runs fine and all, however the prescribed screen resolution for the program is 1024x768 and the netbook (with Windows 7 HE and an Intel GMA 3150) doesn't seem to want to go past 1024x600. Does anyone perhaps have a thought or a way to get 7 to display more here? I don't mind if I even just need to scroll around to get to all the material, but right now its just cutting off part of the program making it impossible to work on some of it.

A:Adjusting Netbook Screen Resolution

Hi Orion3,

While your 1024x768 program is a standard 4:3 aspect ratio, 1024x600 is a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9) as many netbooks have. I'm pretty sure that if 600 is the maximum pixel height it can display but you still need to match the 4:3 aspect ratio program, then you'll have to go down to 800x600 rather than up. Try that and let me know how it works.

AOC 2353 monitor, on windows 7 has a recommended resolution of 1920 by 1080

when it is set here I notice even the desktop boots up quick and efficient. opposed to when it is set at 1600 by 900. which is best on the eyes.

problem with 1920 by 1080 is that the folders and print are far too minute to see.

this is with Intel onboard video, from the processor.

is there a way to expand the text and folders? browsers can be zoomed

would having a video card help?

A:adjusting screen resolution - AOC monitor

If you go into the advanced display settings, you can increase the size of items and fonts and can "bold" the text.
I've got bad eyes, so I do this every time I set up one of my computers after I install the Windows operating system.

The native resolution for my 27" monitors is 1920 X 1080.
This is an example of what my desktop looks like after changing the display settings.
As you can see, the icons and text are noticeably larger and bolder than they would be from using the default settings.

Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.

What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.

I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.

Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

I have Win XP SP2, all updated, Word 2002, SP3.

Choosing say A4 for page setup, setting it to 100% and viewing as Print layout, at 100% used to give a screen size page which was actually equal to A4 ie 21cm x 29.7cm.

For some time now, the screen size is now larger than that - the ruler at the top and bottom shows the marking as being 21cm x 29.7cm, but the cm units on the ruler are marked off at larger than cm units, consequently the screen size page is larger than actual.

This is annoying as it is not an accurate representation of the page layout for things on the page relative to each other.

Any ideas what has caused this and how to fix?

A:how do you adjust the screen size without haveing to scroll round the screen

When you mentioned that you've adjusted the resolution, I'm presuming that you mean the adjustment in the PC by means of the control panel > display. If this is what you have done with no joy, why don't you try the adjustments on the monitor. All monitors have adjustment controls but they all differ in the way that you gain access to it,.. just have a look at the front of the monitor just below the screen,.. there should be a knob or dial that is pushed or turned to scroll through the adjustment menu. Another suggestion is to try another monitor,.. they are quite cheap for second hand units, maybe $10 to $20.

I went to SSDs on all of my computers some time back, but I still use WD RE4s and 2.5 inch WD Black HDDs for a variety of backup tasks and for storage in which the data will not be accessed for a period longer than is ideal to use a non-powered SSD for. On my Macs I am using El Capitan with OS X Journeled, GUID map, and FileVault 2 encryption. On my SP3 and desktop I am using NTFS with Win 10 64-bit Pro with BitLocker enabled on both machines. The OS and third party programs are currently up to date.

I've generally used ExFAT and the GPT partition map because it allows me to use it on all of my computers, and I have always used the default cluster size. However, I do not think the default size was the best decision for me because the size on disk is over TWICE the actual size.

If I am correct, the default Win 10 cluster size is 4k, and that going BELOW that is useful for the drives I have many smaller files on. Is this correct? Additionally, the smaller cluster size I go, the slower the drive will write, correct? Also, if so, how low do you advise going? I am still torn between reformatting outright or trying one of the programs that allows changes to a currently in-use drive. Any advice? Thanks!

A:Hard drive cluster size issues? Size on HDD over twice the actual size

For the a sector size of 4k to double your disk utilization you'd have to have a really tiny average file size. From your numbers shown the average size if I calculate it correct is 132kb (unless you have 1 massive file and 17,711 tiny ones) so a 4k size will make no difference.

You could check with TreeSize Free - it will tell you if you right click on the status bar and select it to be displayed.

EDIT - having checked the default for ExFat is 128k for drives over 32GB (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/140365) and when I tried to format an external USB drive that is what it picked. According to macbook - Reformat exFat with specific Device Block Size and Cluster Size - Ask Different OSX picks 128k also.

So if you had 128k as your cluster size minimum disk utilization would be 17,772 files * 128k = 2.17GB. So if all your files were just over this (say 132k which looks like your current average size) you would be using 4.44GB add a couple of big files and it could easily be 6GB.

I would check your average file sizes and also your current cluster size (you can use chkdsk as described in the AskDifferent link above).

The default is 4k for NTFS and I have always formatted ExFat as 4k also. Depending on your current setting reformatting 4k looks like a good idea.

As for how - copying the data elsewhere, formatting and then copying it back has to be the easiest, safest and most likely fastest way. You'll also get the disk defragmented automatical... Read more

I'm using my mother's Toshiba Laptop while I am visiting.  I placed a link to Outlook on the Favourites Bar so I could get to my emails.
From that, I placed a Shortcut on the desktop.
When I open Outlook from the Favourites Bar, it opens full screen.
If I open it from the Desktop, from the shortcut icon, I get a screen that is @ 2/3 of a screen, that I then have to maximise to read.
From memory in the long distant past, I had this issue before with W7 when I used it but I can't remember how to fix it.
Pulling the screen out to the edges, then using "Exit" instead of  X, doesn't fix the issue.
Anyone got any idea how to stop this and have it open full screen every time?

A:Outlook opens in 2/3 screen size, not full screen.

Hi Hoges This kind of issue is always tiring, because you don't know what will work in order to fix it. To be honest, there's no "actual" fix to that, it really depends of the system, program used, etc. There's a few tricks mentionned in the thread below for that issue, if you want to give them a try:https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie8-windows_vista/how-to-make-internet-shortcut-open-maximized/b2a0b8ae-ce6d-47bb-99fc-7080e88ccac3To be honest, the one that might work the best is the shortcut of the browser that opens directly on the website, and where you'll check the Run Windows Maximized box.

My laptop suddenly has a black bar on the right side (about four inches of black) and a thin band of black (about an inch) on the bottom. It's as if the entire screen just got smaller and shifted up a little and over to the left. The area of the screen I can work in is now much smaller. I can't do anything in the black areas, not even move the cursor into them. Also, Start button has a smeared blue streak on the bottom of it which extends to the bottom of the screen. Everything else seems to be functioning properly.

I have checked the screen resolution and it says 1024x768. The only other option it allows me to change it to is 800x600. I'm not very tech savvy, but can find my way around a computer with clear instructions.

Here is my lapto's info:
OS Version: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium , Service Pack 1, 64 bit

A:Screen size shrunk! Thick black bar on right of screen!

I would recommend updating your video card driver from here.

You could also try: Right click on the desktop and then click on screen resolution and then change the resolution to something different and then change it back to 1024x768.

I hope this helps,

The "Recovery CD's" that I have for my system aren't working. I don't know why. So I used another copy of XP that I had and it's all up and running now. Only problem, the monitor drivers are on the Recovery CD's and now I'm stuck with a 800x600 screen resolution on a wide screen monitor.

The specs I have, give the monitor as being 15.3" wide. I don't know where this number came from. Here's what I got from actually measuring:

13.25" : 7.75"
(1.7 : 1) or (16 : 9.4)

So the closest standard screen resolution for this is (1280×768) I think, which is a ratio of
(16 : 9.6)

*NOTE* This is a built in Monitor. It's a Desktop/Laptop Hybrid of sorts.

And yes, I have checked my Display Properties, it only lets me select 800 by 600 pixels, I can't slide the bar down or anything.

So how do I "stretch" my screen resolution out?

Thank You to anyone who can help me out with this.

my screen is only 1/2 sized. Screen is centered, text is normal sized as

Try this:
Right click on the taskbar and uncheck Lock the Taskbar. Then move your mouse to the top of the double taskbar until it makes a double arrow. Hold down the mouse button and drag the taskbar down until it is one level and release the mouse button. Then right click on the taskbar and check Lock the Taskbar.

Welcome aboard.

Make it sure that you have installed the display driver. Then, set the Display Settings to Smaller (100%).

It should be back to normal.

First, could you please post a screenshot of your problem?

Could it be a monitor issue? Try using the controls on your monitor to move the display.

Suddenly my screen view is bigger than laptop screen. All four edges are almost out of sight. I see others are having the same problem. I have not changed anything that I know of.

I am using XP with service pack 2 on a compaq monitor.. The screen size is bigger than the monitor and I can't get to the toolbars or the start menu and it bows in in the center of the sides like a carnival mirror. I reset the screen resolution to the lowest number and that helped initially, but it stretches out again. the front of the monitor has 3 buttons you can adjust, but the changes don't seem to stay for very long. This is not the biggest problem in the world, but I sure would like to know if there is a simple fix.

If this is a CRT monitor the adjustments you are looking for are on the monitor itself not in Windows.. The front for buttons and knobs and you will see how to adjust screen size as well as the bowed edge. If they aren't 'staying' then you may be looking for a new monitor in the near future. To make sure it's not the video card if you have a friend that would let you borrow a monitor for a day or so you can see it things hold on it and that will let you know it's the monitor. Good luck

i'll show my lack of knowledge (yet again!) here, but the pages i'm looking at now on the web seem too big for the monitor screen!
How can i make the page size fit the monitor screen?

Right click anywhere on the desktop, choose properties, settings and then move the slider to the right until you like the resolution you have...you have to click in each setting to test what it looks like.
