Solved: Safe Mode in command prompt - start up then freezes

Q: Solved: Safe Mode in command prompt - start up then freezes

Hi I have been trying to fix my son's HP laptop. Its a Windows & Home Prem. Sorry the lap top I have registered with is mine but it's my son's which is poorly!
When we got back from holiday he went to use it and it wouldn't start up at all. I tried all of the F prompts I knew to get it to do something, F8 & F12 and eventually I got to the screen which says start up in safe mode with all of the options. I tried them all and then got as far as the laptop doing a start up like the first time we bought it, when you have to to register with windows etc. Then it kept freezing on that page where it says initialising.
I have finally got it to start up in safe mode with command prompts as I been following some of the suggestions I saw on line from your site and have just typed in the sfc/scannow in command prompt . It gets to 30% then freezes. I have tried it several times. I dont have a clue what to try next!
Please help?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Safe Mode in command prompt - start up then freezes

If I start up in normal mode it freezes on the welcome page sometimes, I have managed to get to the re registration form and thought I had cracked it but it froze on there as well. The fan does seem to be very noisy and its getting hot. Would this have anything to do with the problem as no new software was added prior to it not working.

Hi, my computer is infected with some type of malware, but in trying to fix it i might have caused more damage.

Malware/virus had disabled the "Run" option from the start menu, as well as the Task manager. I tried to start it in safe mode (by rebooting/ F8/ Safe mode) but the computer would stop in the middle of the process and shut down. So i restarted the computer in normal mode, searched for msconfig and selected the option to start in safe mode by default. I somehow thought that doing so would guarantee that the safe mode process would be completed. Looking back, i should have thought it out better...

Now, the computer immediately tries to start in safe mode, but again it stops in the middle of the process and shuts down.

Is there any way to disable starting in safe mode from the command prompt? (since I can still access it through Recovery console)....

thanks for your advice

A:[SOLVED] Disable Safe Mode from Command prompt?

Hi fcojmejia !

What happens when you press F8 at startup and choose last known good configuration or normal mode ?

If the above doesn't work you'll need to modify the boot.ini file. Checking the safe mode option in msconfig adds a /safeboot:minimal option at the end of the operating system line in the boot.ini file. You can either boot on an XP CD, enter the recovery console and type bootcfg /rebuild at the c:\windows\ prompt to rebuild a normal boot.ini file, or boot using another bootable CD that supports NTFS to edit the boot.ini file manually.

Once you're back in Windows follow these instructions to post a log and get some help from our security analysts about your malware infection.

Cant boot in normal, safe mode or command prompt. System restore fails due to error code 0x80070002 (cannot find file specified) on any selected restore point. Command prompt from the system recovery options menu doesnt allow navigation on other drives, ie cd C:\ doesnt change to the C drive.
Not sure what to do, if I could get to C then could I get all my files across so I can just do a clean install and not lose my emails and pics?
Happened randomly, just woke it up after in standby overnight and had a bluescreen error, something like bad spool.

I have a utility I run on some customers' machines that requires being run from safe mode. I already have the utility automated via batch, and would like to just run one SFX app and move on to the next machine, knowing that this app will reboot the machine into safe mode w/ command prompt, run my utility, and reboot the machine back into normal mode (the standard shutdown -r -t 01 is easy enough, but there are no modal options!). Also, if this can be done, how would I then make sure that the current user logs in automatically, rather than have safe mode stop at the log-in screen?

The utility in question is a simple "Common Software Package" which includes some software such as Reader and Flash. Some of the software included cannot be installed while an antivirus is running (at least any that have tamper-protection) due to the registry editing involved, but are completely positive in nature (one such software package simply checks the current registry vs. a backup it takes on each shutdown to look for any discrepancies, adjusted for installed software, of course). The packages do not require Windows Installer service to be running, so I have found SM w/ CP to be the best option.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

When I boot the computer and press F8, it shows options to boot in various modes and i can not run my operating system in normal mode and not have win os disc.
I choose "Safe mode with Command prompt".
But instead of displaying me the command prompt on the login screen it shows me the normal login screen....
windows loads files but does not show the dos screen even if i choose simple 'safe mode' option.
What should I do to resolve the issue? I want the command prompt. All your replies are much appreciated.thanks a lot

You need to log in also when selecting Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Simply log in, windows will then show you the Safe Mode Command Prompt.

Hello,

I have here a pretty stupid problem. I had to enter Windows 8 in safe mode with command prompt to do something. After I did that, I pressed alt+F4 to exit the command prompt, so now I have a complete black screen with a cursor that I can move. I want to exit the safe mode now, to reboot again in normal mode. However, there is nothing to click on, alt+F4 doesn't work, ctrl+alt+del doesn't work, etc. There are some things that do work (for example win+P to connect a second screen, but I don't need that...). When I press the power button, it just goes to sleep. So I just want to get out of this situation. If anyone knows how to bring up command prompt again or shut it down completely, let me know please.

Thanks,
Japeroen

A:How to exit safe mode with command prompt

Well guess what. After nearly 1 hour of trying to exit, I tried one more time after I posted this tread and it worked by pressing the power button... I don't understand it... But hey, it's solved, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
Thanks!

Hi,

I was trying to clear the index.dat files through a boot in "safe mode and using the command prompt"/clear Index.dat files. However, the screen freezes and the system (WIN2KPRO) does not completely initialize.

I have again rebooted my system in "safe mode", opened the command prompt but have been denied access to erase the index.dat files (The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process).

I have two questions, :
1) Why could I not boot in "safe mode and using the command prompt"

2)Why when I am in safe mode, I still have no access to erase .DAT files?

Ok, this is so screwed up you just won't believe it.

I had a problem that I won't go into now but I got to the point where I decided the only recourse was to re-install XP. After the install, it told me I needed to register before I could log in. Ok, fine. So I hit OK and it crashes. I figured out that it would let me log in if I booted into safe mode. At some point I set msconfig to automatically boot into safe mode. Now when it boots into safe mode I get the message requireing me to register, but then I get a message saying I can't register when in safe mode. But until I log in, I can't set msconfig to boot normally. So I'm stuck. Where do I find the ini or whatever file that is booting it into safe mode?

A:How to turn off safe mode in a command prompt

well, if you can enter safe mode - go to run -> msconfig -> boot.ini -> and uncheck boot in safe mode.

You only need to activate windows, registring is optional.

This all started when computer would lock up after about 5-10 mins of use. I figured it was a virus since our virus protection lapsed(go figure). So first thing I did was run hijackthis and I will post the log from that. Then downloaded Malwarebytes and did a scan and removed all that with no luck on the computer working any better. So I figured it was time to start safe mode. Well, that just got me in to more trouble. I now boot up to safe mode with the cmd.exe screen. I have tried F8, F6, F12 and esc. They all get me to the same screen of starting in safe mode or windows normally. Anything I choose gets me back to the command prompt in safe mode.

While using the Duplicate File delete tool in Comodo System Utilities, the Ntfs.sys drivers were accidentally deleted. Everything worked fine until I shut down. The system would not boot. F8 would not get me to the Safe Mode screen. After about a billion tries hitting F8, the Safe Mode screen appeared. I chose Windows XP Professional OS and the option Command Prompt. When I keyed Enter, I got that same error message about the repair disk which I don't have. Hit F8 again(just held it down) and got Safe Mode screen. Keyed the option Safe Mode and when entered, got that same error message. Hit F8 again and got Safe Mode screen. Keyed option 'directories'. Got same error message and a list of drivers(sys32\ntfs.sys) not on list. I was not able to get into the Safe Mode screen again no matter how many times I hit F8. The keyboard and mouse work while Safe Mode screen is on but don't work when trying to boot the machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option, allowing XP to install on top of itself. After completion you'll need to go to Windows Update and download & install all updates (except for hardware & driver related updates, which should never be downloaded from Windows Update - only from the OEM websites). Only 2 days ago did I just refresh windows 8.1. I re installed all the updates and windows 8.1. Seemed to be working fine last night. This morning I went to click the windows icon at the bottom and the screen kept flickering between desktop and the gray screen for the Windows app screen. I had to manually restart my computer and it will no longer start in regular windows mode. It will either freeze when on the desk top or not even boot correctly. I have started up safe mode and checked for any malware using Malwarebytes and have run a full scan using Windows defender and have found nothing. I have removed near everything in start up that doesn't have to do with windows and yet the problem persists. I am out of ideas and I am looking for help. I have a Great Quality ZX-3310 laptop. It recently froze up and would not reboot. I unplugged the machine and plugged it back in to restart and now I get either the windows start up page that freezez before it is loaded or I get this message: "RS482M- Test Bios BR#13207A". Sometimes I get nothing on the screen but I can hear the fan run. It will not let me start in Safe Mode. The DVD drive recognizes a DVD it there but it immediately freezes on start up.

What are the possible problems/solutions? Thank you.

Good morning tech people,

unfortunatly my computer not working once again. As I'm a total beginner on IT-issues I am thankful for every hint.

As the thread name already mentiones: my computer freezes every time after startup. If I choose the safe mode it works perfectly well.
As I already read a view threds on similar topics, I already removed all programms (skye, dropbox, avast) from autostart and ran a scan with hijack this. this are the results:

A:Xp freezes at start up and wont even open in safe mode

When you reinstalled xp, did you do a clean install? Or just reinstalled over it? I suggest formatting and doing a clean install. If it still doesn't work, it could possibly mean that the hard drive is going bad. Find out your hard drive brand, download their diagnostic tool and do a scan. Good luck.

Laptop worked when folded and put away. Upon trying to log in, it was loading desktop, I clicked to get online and then it crashed and turned off.

When tried to restart, it never would load desktop again. Would get error messages after Welcome screen saying taskbar won't work, Dell support... not working, etc.

Tried starting in safe mode. Starts loading the drivers, etc. then freezes soon into the process.

When you try to start up normally, you get to login screen, welcome screen and then it goes to a plain screen with an error message: "Windows must be reinstalled to activate...insert CD....to begin reinstall.."

Tried Start up repair

No system restore points

No backup on computer to use.

Any ideas?

THanks

Hi all,

I have checked other threads for a solution to this problem, but I cannot seem to find one.

Ive got a Dell inspiron 1420 and it currently will not start up. After initializing, it gives me the screen that states that it detected an unusual shut down (which it did initiAlly, the screen froze so I powered it off manually). But now it won't get past this recovery screen. It freezes so that I cannot move to the option to start in safe mode nor will it do anything when I press f8 during start up. It freezes on this screen as well.

I have no idea if I am infected let alone how to check if I can't even get on my computer. I may have some sort of operating info on another forum that I could find.

Any suggestions?? I'm a student and need this computer!!

Thanks.

A:Computer freezes at start up; unable to get to safe mode

luckylindalu,
A re-format as suggested will wipe all your docs, photos etc & it therefore very drastic and is only a last resort so don't try it yet please!

I'm not sure of the solution but, in addition to the alternate boots you've already tried is there a "use last good configuration"? Or some kind of "repair" option? If so, try those in that order.

Alright, so, last night I was in a hurry, and didn't want my laptop to take long to shut down, so I did something stupid that I never do. I shut down by holding the power button. About fifteen minutes later when I came back and turned it on, it let me log in like normal (slightly slower than normal now that I think about it) and all seemed fine. But after about a minute, it just froze. The screen glazed over as a whitish shade and my cursor became the loading circle, nothing worked. I pressed ctrl + alt + delete and it sent me to a black screen with my cursor. I tried again, and again, and again to no avail. It works perfectly in safe mode though, no problems at all. I even tried system restore, and that did not help a thing.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Please excuse me if I have posted this in the wrong area, but over the past 48 hours I have had great difficulty in using my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1545. System type: 32-bit. Processor: not available. Memory (RAM): not available. I checked this yesterday and all information was provided, but not sure why it is not today.

Everytime I switch it the laptop on, I will have about 1 minutes worth of use before it completely freezes. Ctrl + alt + del do not respond which means I just have to keep switching it on and off, on and off. Everything works fine on safe mode and after checking other sites for advice, I have not had any luck.

I have tried 2 restores, which were successful, but not in fixing my problem.

I am currently an English teacher in China so my laptop is crucial for everything I do. I appreciate any feedback and help.

Many thanks,

Nick

Hello,
I have this problem with my laptop - sometimes I cannot login - after choosing the user the screen freezes or after logging in it works only for a few minutes in regular mode (I can do things over those minutes like open firefox, but I cannot open folders, sometimes I can open the task manager or even some programs) but then it freezes and I have to shutdown the computer manually by pushing the power button. When I tried pushing crtl+alt+del I got a message "The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when ctrl+alt+delete was pressed. If the operatin system does not respond, press esc or restart the computer by using the power switch". I don't know if this helps, but I try to add as much as I can. Sorry it it's not relevant - my knowledge about computers and IT is minimal.
The computer runs fine in safe mode.
So I tried system restore to a week before when the computer was still fine and it didn't work. So I reinstalled a graphics driver (Intel HD Graphics Driver) as I found on the internet that similar problems got fixed by reinstalled videocard drivers. And it worked, everything started to run smoothly again in the regular mode. As normally I allowed windows updates and after restarting my computer, the problems came back.
I assumed that the problem was the updates so I uninstalled most of them (KB2930275; KB2923961; KB2925418; KB2929755; KB2929733 and KB2918077) but the problem was still there and I was unable to unin... Read more

Windows just downloaded an update to my ASUS x83V laptop and now I can't get it to boot up. I've tried booting in normal mode, last successful mode, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and nothing works.

If trying to boot in safe mode it gets stuck on crcdisk.sys. When trying to boot in any mode it eventually hits the blue screen with a STOP error of 0x0000001E. I have also gotten 0x0000007E and 0x00000024.

I am positive it's the latest Windows Update that caused this because my computer at work, which also runs on Vista and is also an ASUS, had an update yesterday. When I came into work this morning and tried to start up it was unable to and did a start up repair. That didn't work but it gave me a system restore option which did work.

Unfortunately my ASUS laptop does not prompt me to do a repair nor a system restore. The recovery disk I have that came with the laptop only allows me to do a restore which erases everything on my HD.

I'm only somewhat computer savvy; better at working with them than fixing them so please try to put things in layman's terms. Thank you!

Hi,

I'm having problems when I load windows in normal mode. When I turn on the computer everything starts as normal. It's after clicking my name and the desktop loads, nothing responds. It just freezes.

I have no problems when loading windows in safe mode with networking.

I ran a full scan through my virus software, Kaspersky. No threats were detected.

I also tried System Restore twice while in safe mode. I'm still having issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

Hello all, I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop that uses Windows Vista Home Basic that freezes shortly after I turn it on and log in. I can still move the cursor, but I can't click anything or type anything. It works fine in Safe Mode. I am in Safe Mode with Networking right now. I am suspecting that it is something to do with the drivers since it works fine in Safe Mode. For my first troubleshooting method, I would like to disable all Startup items I possibly can in System Configuration. The problem is that I don't know what I can disable and what I cannot. I don't want to mess anything up.

The origin of the problem: One night I was playing a computer game, not in a web browser, just on the computer, then I went to bed. I didn't turn off the computer, I just shut the top. About 5 minutes later, I heard the Windows start-up music. I thought to myself "What the...?" I opened the top and it said something like, "Windows had to restart due to an error." I click OK and proceeded. After about maybe a minute, it froze and I had to shut it off manually by holding down the power button. Now every time I turn it on and log on, after about a minute, it freezes. I can still move the cursor, but can't click or type anything.

If disabling everything in the StartUp tab of System Configuration doesn't fix the issue, I would like to disable all the items that I possibly can in the Services tab.

Here is a list of all the items that I have in the StartUp tab of System Con... Read more

I've had this PC for about 4 years now, and in the last year, it has done this twice. I boot up the PC as normal, and about 3-10 minutes later, everything freezes, except the mouse, which can move around. I have to hard reboot after this. I have done multiple tests on the PC, such as memtest86, disk check, core temp (39 degrees) and intel burn test, and got nothing from any of them. I am able to run in safe mode fine, it is just very slow.

PC specs:
Motherboard - Asus P5QPL - Vm EPU
PSU - OCZ400SXS - EU
Harddrive - Brand new Western Digital Red 1TB 64MB hard disk Drive SATA 6gb/s 7200rpm
Video Card - MSI N9600GT - MD512 DDR3

Any help would be great

Essentially what the title says: I was trying to fix my brother's computer because I kept getting a website redirect and I know something's wrong with his computer. I ran Malwarebyte's, Ccleaner, and AVG and they didn't catch anything. I came here after googling and seeing some advice to another person with the redirect issue, and did the run: msconfig: checked the safemode box in the BOOT tab. So I restarted his computer (it's running XP) and kept trying to restart in safe mode but it kept taking me back to the screen that gives the option to start in safe mode or normal. No matter which mode I chose, it kept coming BACK to that screen so I finally just manually shut it down. HELP! This sucks!

it only opens another command prompt with funny picture.jpg as the window's title.

How can I open a file with a space in the name?

A:Command Prompt - start command help?

Hi,
Welcome to TSF.

Type the command as follows:

Start "" "Funny Picture.jpg"

The first set of quotes ("") sets the title (for the window, this is what the start command expects for quotes normally), then the second set around the file name allows the space.

After a brownout during which my battery backup failed, my computer lost power. On bringing it back up, I can start my computer in safe mode and safe mode with networking, however attempting to start it up normally will display my normal icons and desktop, and then the taskbar, start menu, and all normal functions of windows such as right-click menus and ctrl+alt+del functions seem to hang. ctrl+alt+del instead eventually shows a message that it failed to display the related security options and suggests a restart using the power button.

I need to find the source of this issue and repair it so that I can run windows normally again. Sadly, I do not possess system recovery points to roll back to, and I don't have a system repair disk of any sort.
