Blu-Ray/DVD-Drive Disappears after Startup

Q: Blu-Ray/DVD-Drive Disappears after Startup

After I start my computer the blu-ray/dvd drive disappears from "my computer." It has the latest drivers. The BIOS recognizes that the drive is connected and I can see it when I load the bios. Windows does not recognize it in device manager after it disappears. I've tried a lot of the fixes I've read but nothing seems to work and it's about to drive me crazy. Please help!

My specs are:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core 2.51gHz
Zalman CNPS9000 CPU Fan/heatsink
ASUS m4a78-e motherboard
LG BH08LS20 Blu-Ray Burner - connected via SATA cable
1.0TB Western Digital Caviar Black HD (via SATA)
Maxtor 150GB HD (via IDE)
HT Omega Claro Plus+ 7.1 Sound Card
Samsung 23" HDScreen
Saitek Eclipse USB Keyboard
Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 v2.0
Antec Nine Hundred Two Case.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Welcome to Seven Forums bigred82. It might be better if you listed the things you have tried, as we'll no doubt recommend them again. Such as removing the upper and lower filters. Switching the (SATA?) plug to another connector, etc.

Two problems, related in timing.

On July 1st, I made some adjustments to my startup config and such, and ever since then I've been having problems where my IE and Windows Media Player freeze for a few seconds when loading (though without interrupting data)

But most important of which is that since that time, my HP Factory Image D:\ drive has disappeared. It never served me any purpose, but it always just sat there in my Hard Disk lists on my Computer screen, and is conspicuous in its absence.

I checked my Disk Management and found that the 12 GB where the "D" drive was had become "Unallocated". Before I did something stupid, I checked to Rescan Drives, and it re-found the Factory Image! From then on, the FACTORY_IMAGE (D shows up in my Computer.

But after a few days I found that it was no longer showing on my Computer window, and realized that after restarting or shutting down my comp, it would always disappear, only to re-appear when I rescan my disks.

What's the problem? What service do I need to restore/fix to stop this from happening?

Somewhat related question: Would getting a whole new motherboard and CPU but retaining the old harddrive end these problems mentioned above or is it something to do solely with my faulty configurations?

A:Adjusted startup: HP Factory Image drive disappears after each restart

before you start spending money or mess your machine up any more--go into MSCONFIG and select the normal startup button then restart to see if problem(s) are gone

I have an IBM R30 notebook running Windows XP. I have attached a Diamond touch (Mitsubishi) keyboard. Every time I restart, it will not work. It appears in device manager with a ! on it. I have to uninstall it and reinstall it every time and it will work until I shutdown.
Any ideas?

A:USB Keyboard disappears on startup

Try installing it in SAFE MODE so that the device appears correct ( with no ! )

Then reboot computer in normal mode to see if that works out.

This is a 2013 Toshiba Lx835-D325 all-in-one with a 3rd generation Intel i7 CPU. Originally had a 2 TB HDD and takes a 180 watt AC adapter.

The screen shows a "no media found" message for 5 seconds when first engaged by attaching the AC adapter plug, then fades back to a black screen. The power button starts the machine but no display image is revealed unless detaching and then re-attaching the power plug. The power button lights and starts the computer but fails to engage a display image. Could it be the power switch? The small power switch board is shown in the last picture.

Hello there!  I have a Radeon 6850 video card and I use the HDMI Audio as my sound output.  Sometimes however, it disappears on startup and I have to use the executable and reinstall it.  I don't know what causes this.  Anyone out here have an idea? Thanks!

A:Audio device disappears on startup.

The very first thing you need to do is to update your ATI driver. First go to control panel and uninstall ATI drivers completely. You can find the latest ATI driver from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
Report back if the problem still continues after updating drivers.

Problem: The Wild Tangent Error Pop-up was solved on my desktop computer by using:

START ---- RUN---type in msconfig-----then going to START-UP and unchecking the Wild Tangent File...... But.....

Our Laptop has the same problem, which is an XP also.....we tried the above solution. The lap top has SPY Bot, and Ad Ware removal like my desktop computer, but now we have a new problem before we solve the Wild Tangent problem.

And that is.......When we go to click the Start-up Tab in the System Configuration Ultilty which brings us to all the files on Start-up, we do see all the files but, the page disappears after about 5 seconds, it acts like it is timing out.

This quick disappearing act does not give us a chance to find the file and unclick the Wild Tangent file to solve our problem.

How do we fix the Start-up so it will last more than 5 seconds?

Thanks for all your help!

Just recently i scanned my computer with Spybot Search and Destroy, and found a trojan "DC3_FEXEC", i removed and rebooted my computer, i opened the task manager and found a process named 'Test.exe' and he disappeared very quickly. I ran ADware cleaner, Combofix (probably a mistake), Malwarebytes, HitmanPro, and it didn't found anything. But everytime i reboot and open the task manager it's there, but it disappears so fast that i can't click on it.
This viruses are in my new Hard Drive that a friend gave me, i formatted both partitions except the one that said ''System Reserved''.
If anyone could help i would be very grateful. Sorry if it's confusing, english is not my native language.
Thanks in advance!
Hey, i solved (i hope), apparently it was something from spybot, i ran in safe mode and used the ''autoruns'' application and the description it said ''test.exe - Makes sure Spybot 2 is there on Windows 10.''
I deleted it and now it's gone. I tried removing the topic but i don't think i can. Sorry if i wasted anyone's time.

A:Test.exe process on startup and then disappears quickly

Hi there,Just to drop by a piece of advice - Spybot Search & Destroy is no longer recommended as its performance is very poor, and the TeaTimer function interferes with malware removal. Two better alternatives for anti-malware software are Emsisoft Anti-Malware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Both have excellent track records and offer real time protection if upgraded to paid version, and can be used alongside existing antivirus software.

A:A windows pops up at startup on the taskbar then disappears

Greetings, and welcome to TSF.

Your log apprears clean, so we'll need to look a little deeper.

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3 http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=download. Learn how to use it at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=easytouse. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates at http://tds.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=update. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to 'System Testing' on the menu and choose 'Full System Scan'. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies. If you have problems copying the text, look (or search) for a file named scandump.txt and see if that has the alarms - post that here.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. You may use Panda ActiveScan also at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

I upgraded to Windows 10 several months ago and the Quick Access menu was working normally. A few months back however, all of the pinned items disappeared and I cannot pin anything to the quick access menu either. I've gone through all the posts and different solutions I can find and all I have been able to do is temporarily fix the problem by deleting the "5f7b5f1e01b83767.automaticDestinations-ms" file in the C:\Users\Rob\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations folder.

Deleting this file does bring back the quick access folders that I had pinned before this problem started to happen, but every time I restart my computer, the quick access menu is again empty and nothing can be pinned to it.

I have googled and tried all of the different solutions that I can find so any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi all. I am trying to fix my dad's computer that has a curious problem. When the computer boots up, the network fails to load, Norton's anti-virus fails to load, the windows gui is very very sluggish (many times locking up all together when any icons are double clicked), and the shutdown/reboot options are no longer displayed under the start menu. Additionally, ctrl+alt+del fails to open a task manager. When the computer is in this state it is almost completely unresponsive to any input.I have managed to get the computer operating normally by booting into safe mode and either choosing the "load last known good configuration" option or using the system restore. (I have used both these options because neither works consistently, often requiring multiple attempts to achieve a good boot). I have discovered no particular pattern, nor been able to identify any particular restore point that works or doesn't work.My current solution has been to simply not shut down or reboot the computer after I've succeed into getting it to work, however I would like to solve the underlying problem that is causes this.I have tried numerous things, including windows updates, reloading restore points, using Spybot S&D, updating and running a virus scan, all to no avail. I have yet to use HiJack this, so I went ahead and downloaded it and ran the scan, but I could use some help deciphering the results. This has been going on for a long time and a reboot fixes it. However, I'm now trying to see if there's a better solution than a reboot.

Problem: I'll be working away on my computer and suddenly this message pops up from a piece of software that uses the DVD/CD internal drive and announces I don't have a DVD/CD player on this machine anymore. After that the drive won't even open the tray up. I can't see it in the control panel, system, hardware list either. As I said the reboot fixes it up but that's a pain at times. Any suggestions?

Hello all,

I've come across an issue that has completely baffled me and I've no idea how to fix or establish what the issue is.
Basically when I boot up my PC there are 3 drives visible and accesible. C Drive, D Drive and F Drive.
The third drive (F) is an SSD which has been in use for months now without any issues at all.
I use Steam for gaming and after updating a couple games my F drive disappeared and all the games installed on it showed as uninstalled through the Steam app.
I rebooted my PC - the three drives all appeared as normal. I clicked the F drive to look inside and everything was there as normal, including games installed (roughly 100+gigs of data)
As soon as I run Steam the drive disappears....
I have tried removing everything from the drive, re-formatting it and leaving it blank/empty. Once Steam loads the drive vanishes...

Any ideas??

I have 2 CD/DVD drives on my computer. I recently found an old computer of mine in storage, and so decided to pull it apart and salvage anything of use. I took the Hard Drive, and today bought a "Multi-function HDD Dock" from my local computer store so I could use the old HDD as an external hard drive for my laptop, primarily to install a couple of games that won't fit on my laptop HDD with everything else I have.

Everything seems to be working, as I salvaged a few of the old files, and then reformatted it. I moved a couple of movies and word documents I had to clear up a lot of space on my internal HDD onto the new 'external' HDD without any problems.

However, as soon as I try to install a game onto it, it disappears. I've tried a few games, the first one got halfway before saying the directory cannot be found (i.e. the game half installed on the HDD before it disappeared) but the second game shows the error straight away.

I'm not sure what the problem could be. Obviously I can transfer files onto the HDD, as even movies copied over, however it disappears. It can't be because it is going to sleep, because it occurs halfway through the process of writing onto the disc.

Any help you are able to give will be greatly appreciated.

I just installed a new Western Digital 500GB HD on my Win XP system for added storage capacity, complementing the 80GB Western Digital currently in the system. Everything went smoothly, and hard drive installed fine - the only issue being after about an hour - the drive disappears from the system. It can not be found in device manager or disk management utility. When I ro-boot the system, the drive returns only to disappear again after an hour or so.

I have installed second hard drives on past machines (pre-WinXP ) and never had any problems. The hard drives are both IDE and set as cable select with appropriate cabling from mother board (with identified SLAVE and MASTER branding). An outdated thread posted over three years ago cited similar issue, but no resolution provided. I came across another cite that suggested it was the power supply - and I went ahead an upgraded to 500W - which did not solve the problem. If anyone here has any idea why this would be happening, I would appreciate your help. Thanks.

Weird problem here. I pulled a DVD Rom from one Gateway and put it in this Gateway (P4 1.4, 768mb, XP home). But as soon as I put an audio CD in it starts to read it and disappears from My Computer and System. I have to reboot to get it to come back. It'll read data CDs fine, just no audio.

Vista home premium is making my hard drive disappear.

It started yesterday. It's an internal 500 gig hard drive. I use it for data storage (not for my system). When I start up the drive is there (drive E) then after a few minutes it's gone! I don't know what could be causing this. I ran checkdisk and it said it's functioning perfectly. then when I started after a few minutes on running vista, the hard drive no longer shows up on my computer.

My system drive seems to work fine and always shows up and so do all my external drives. (I do a lot of music recording so I need a lot more space than most people.)

I checked the device manager just now and the hard drive doesn't show up at all.
Any idea what could cause this? Possible cures?

Please don't say system restore. I've done a lot work that I don't want to lose, and besides, my system is working fine. I need the space on that big 500 gig drive. It's less than 6 months old, and only about 1/4th full.

and stopped the hard drives turning off in power management - but the problem keeps recurring. The drive disappear at random intervals, ranging from a few minutes to 20 minutes. Short of reinstalling Windows, I'm not sure what else to do. Any suggestions?

Hi all,
I have a second hard drive that's started spontaneously dissappearing lately. The first time it happened it came back after a reboot (or two?). This time it doesn't come back at all. The computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 2.4GHz running Windows XP Home (yeah, I know), with 512MB Ram, two 80GB internal drives and an external SCSI VideoRaid. I'm pretty sure I've got the cable selections to master and slave but might have cable select jumpered (have to double check).

The even viewer shows Errors 9 and 11 in both this case and the former occurance. I thought maybe the drive was going bad but it's less than a year old and had no problems when it was the second drive in my PIII. It's a Western Digital 7200RPM special edition with 8MB cache and has previously performed flawlessly.

Any ideas? Also, I'm planning on reformatting the C drive anway since it's still got the original factory setup (hate those) and can either put Windows 2000 Pro on it or Windows XP Pro. With all the talk about XP SP2 problems, any thoughts on just going with 2000 Pro? I'll be primarily using this computer for audio/video editing and have previously had good luck with 2000 Pro on my old PIII.

A:2nd Hard drive disappears

Your thoughts about it being the HDD going bad are probably the correct ones, I have had similar problems with several IBM Deskstar drives, where they would intermittently disappear and then a couple of reboots later, they would re-appear, then one day they just went and never came back.

I would recomend copy any info your have on that disk off to CD or other media ASAP.

I have a WD 1TB Green Sata but every now and then it just disappears from device manager and computer and storage manager, does anyone have any clues, i have had this problem for some time right now im running off an IDE and well thats just sad but stable ive tried different Sata ports and so on, no change still disappears happens on alot of my hard drives, im scared it may be my mobo...

A:Hard drive disappears

Yes, as you suspect this could be a fault on the mobo. But, as it is intermittent it could just be a bad connection or a faulty SATA cable. About the only suggestion I can offer is to try a new SATA cable.

When the drive dissapears have a look to see if it is still recognised in the Bios.

Hello all,

I'm running 2003 server and I have a Seagate 250 GB external drive used for backups. The problem is, whenever the server gets rebooted, the drive disappears and our backup doesn't run. If I unplug and replug the drive, it shows up and everything is fine. The drive has a power source attached and I've unchecked the box in Device Manager under the USB root hub about allowing Windows to turn off power the device.

Any suggestions?

I have a Sony VAIO laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with a single 500 GB hard drive. A year ago, when the computer was new, I used a free partition manager program (Partition Wizard maybe?) to allocate about 60 GB for drive C: which holds Windows 7 and all of my software apps. I allocated the rest of the free space to D: for all of my data files. Sony also has a 13GB recovery partition and a 100 MB System Reserved partition which preceed C: and D: on the hard drive.

Three days ago, when I booted the computer for the day, drive D: was gone. Disk Management showed free, unallocated space equal to the size of my missing drive D:. Using Sony live chat support, the technician used Disk Management to allocate the 400 GB of free space to D: and formatted the partition. I then restored my missing data from a backup.

The next day I booted my computer and drive D: was gone again. Disk Management again shows free, unallocated space equal to the size of my missing drive D:.

I have no third-party disk management software installed. Recent changes to my system include:
1) SmartSync Software recently downloaded a new version of SmartSync Pro (version 4.0) to my hard drive.
2) I ran Disk Cleanup on drive C:

Do you know what would cause drive D: to repeatedly disappear on boot up and how to fix the problem?
Thanks for your help!

A:Drive D: disappears REPEATEDLY

I searched the threads for awhile. Although there are many for "Drive D: disappears", none of them are like my situation. It appears to be unique--a first for my particular situation and symptoms.

I would really appreciate some help! If you need more information, let me know.

Windows 7 64 bit with a SSD C drive and 2 regular storage drives. I think the 1 storage drives is sata and one is IDE but it's been so long since i built this thing i can't remember. And since the one doesn't show up even in device manager now i can't be sure. I suppose i should look in the bios, but i have had this issue before and i want get at why it happens instead of just going into bios only to fix it temporarily.

That said, this time it happened when i installed karen's replicator. I have used it before but it wasn't working rigght so i uninstalled it but recently tried it again to see if i could get it to work. But after i chose my E drive as the destination drive, when i ran the job it did nothing and thats when i looked for my drive and realized it disappeared. Note that it has done this before without karens replicator even being installed. So that app isn't the problem, it simply triggered the problem. Any idea how i can get my drive back and keep this from happening again ?

First, right click computer, select manage and in the left column select Disk Management. Post a screenshot. Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

If you see the drive in the bottom section but it has no drive letter, right click it, select change drive letter or path, next screen select add, and give it a drive letter. If it wants to format it, do not do it. You will lose everything on the drive.
As to why it is happening, there could be several reasons. A loose cable could do it, or the drive could be dying. To determine if it is sata or and IDE drive, look inside your computer. An IDE drive will be connected with a wide ribon cable. Whichever type it is, make sure the cables are properly seated on both ends.

If you do get it back run checkdisk f/r Disk Check
Also, go to the manufacturer's web site and download and run their diagnostic tool.
The first picture is an IDE cable the second picture are a Sata cables.

Appreciate your help on this one. Here's the thing.....Every now and then, and for a reason unknown to me, my 2nd hard drive disappears from my computer, and is inaccessible. Restarting solves the problem temporarily. I have found others with the same problem, and there are several solutions suggested, all of which I have tried.

First of all - Asus Motherboard, Athlon Xp 3200+, 1 gig ddr, Ge force 4, soundblaster live, maxtor 120 gig, phillips 15 gig. sony dvd re-writer, phillips dvd player. Window XP (sp2)

1. temperature - The fan on my processor is fine, and specified for the xp 3200. The fan on my graphics card is fully functioning, and there are 2 case fans (excluding the PSU fan)

2. cable - I have tried 2 different cables, and even swapped the motherboard socket I use to connect to.

3. jumper swiches - tried different combinations, matrox set to slave, other to master.

Add to this a new problem, which may provide new insight....after installing current graphics card, and sound card, (both with bang up to date drivers) while playing games - deus ex 2 - occasionally my computer suddenly flashes to the 'Windows is shutting down' screen, and is off in a flash, when I reboot, the hard drive is often missing as if that fault has triggered another fault. Rebooting again solves it.

Sorry for the length of the message, but I really appreciate help.

I have Windows 7 and when I go into "My Computer" it shows the disc drive, but when I put a cd or dvd into the laptop the drive disappears and won't play any discs.
I brought the laptop into best buy and they said I would need to send it for repair because it is probably a virus... any suggestions? I'm hoping to fix it myself instead of paying to fix it!

Thanks for your help!

A:Disc Drive Disappears

Put a CD/DVD in then go to Start -> type diskmgmt.msc and press enter.

Does it show up in that list?

I've got a bigger problem, but in working it I come up against a sub-problem that I'd like to figure out.

I'm running W7 SP1 and I've got a drive that I can see. Then, s... happens and it's gone. It's still on the network because I can see it from other devices, but not from my PC.

If I reboot, there it is again.

Q: Is there any way I can re-see this drive without rebooting?
