I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I transfer old audio cassettes to CD-R's for family members and friends using Audacity, Been doing this for well over a year now.
Copy the media right over to the hard drive, save as an MP3 and burn it to disc using either WMP or Win Xp's feature.
Daughter got an upgrade to her I-Pod stuff and Quicktime.
Now I can only burn with I-tunes' (slower than molasses) software.
If I use WMP, a dialog window opens and say, WMP can't read this file, It's not an MP3 or is missing a codec, or something to that affect.
If I use Xp, it copies but it sounds like "ZiiiipZiiiipZiiiip". If that's a sound.

Can anyone tell me what happned?
Thank, Jeff

edit.
I should add this is not copyrighted material I'm copying to cd's. It's family stuff like Grandma playing the piano or little Johnny reciting a poem.

Just wanted to be clear.

Got new computer in April of 2007 (HP Media Center M7747C) running vista and Norton 2008 (now) started with Norton 2007.

No problems until lightning hit my house in August of 2008. At that time I needed to replace my Ethernet card. (my surge suppressor did its job for everything else and sacrificed itself I was very happy about that).
Because my Ethernet card was part of the mother board (or so I was told) I needed to put the new one in one of the spare pci slots. This worked well and I am still using it today. It is a dlink 10/100.

In September of 2008 my computer would not start and went into a black screen saying that there was a problem with vista loading. I was able to load the os in safe mode and I determined it to be a bad graphics card.

I installed a new graphics card and because I was in a rush and needed it to work, I live in a rural area and my options for computer parts at odd hours are Wal-Mart or Office Max (60 miles round trip). I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a $99 ATI Radeon HD 2400 pro because it was the only card they stocked that fit into the pci express slot the old card was in and I was out of PCI Slots. This solved the problem immediately and my computer appeared to work normal. However as I found out several minutes into the new card it changed my sound settings and would no longer play over the speakers that connected to my computer or if I plugged in headphones still no sound. I did some research and found that there is a problem between the A... Read more

I'm running Vista Home Premium on a Dell XPS 410 PC.
A Windows automatic update installed this afternoon (yeah, bad idea, I know).

Now Vista launches about half-way then freezes. Some desktop icons are displayed but they are generic and non-functional. Any program icon I click yields an error box that states,"Chose the program you want to open this file:" The only option offered is Adobe Reader - not helpful. Data files on the desktop open and display OK. I disconnected all peripherals and rebooted but that didn't help.

I ran System Restore back to the point the Windows update was installed this afternoon, but restore was "unsuccessful." I tried to run it back to an older restore point, but now System Restore won't work anymore. I get the same "Chose the program you want to open this file:" box.

I rebooted in Safe Mode, but System restore won't run in Safe Mode either.

I ran sfc / scannow in cmd, but it found no error.

I'm able to write this message because the Vista Forums icon I have on the desktop connects me to the internet, while the Explorer and Firefox icons do not.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Hallo jgnann, you could try booting into recovery options on my laptop it is f11 and try the last good configuration option.

Or else in safe mode open Windows updates & in the bottom LH corner is Installed Updates from there you should be able to uninstall the offending update and see if that helps.

Also while in safe mode just check Device Manager in your Control Panel if the update was a driver that did not install properly there will be a yellow triangle with an exclimation mark on it.

If this has happened you can right click on the driver & select Properties then select the Driver tab & you will see an option to Roll back driver to previous version.

I hope one of these helps resolve your issue

While travelling I have been using my wife's HP notebook computer running on Windows XP.

Night before last, while doing some e-mails I was prompted to d/l and install an I Tunes update, from the usual menu that included Safari and Quicktime. This update seemed to take forever. Finally, I decided to go to bed and just turned off the notebook. Probably just hibernated.

Today my wife went to sync her I Pod and, unbelievably, there is no I Tunes on her notebook. Nada - other than an I Tunes Set Up in downloads from 2009. So, I go to system restore and, unbelievably, find system restore is turned off. (I have now turned it back on.)

Anyone have any suggestions how I can get her I Tunes back? Is it as simple as installing a new I Tunes download and then syncing her I Pod to it? Or what?

Would really appreciate any help as my name is now "MUD" with my better half.

Thanks.

Well I realized that my cd/dvd drive is not being recognized by my laptop. It was working, but I do remember updating my Itunes about three weeks ago, and since then it has not worked. I am now desperate to get it working again, because I have some holiday pics that I want to burn to disc!
I have done an awful lot of searching through a variety of forums like this to find fixes...
I have tried:
1. Going into Device Manager and tried both uninstalling and disabling the DVD?CD-ROM drives...
2. Going into Device Manager and tried to delete the CD rom under the IDE ATA controller
3. Went into regedit and followed others directions... but don't have an upper or a lower filter to delete?
4. Tried to delete my Itunes altogether. but found that I did not have permission? WTF? (Another known issue with Vista, or so I have read)
5. Someone suggested tinkering with the Bios? Not sure what that is, and how to tinker?
6. Some have suggested re-installing Vista, or re-installing my drive software... how do you do that if the computer isn't recognizing the cd? hmmm?
I am very frustrated, and have seen that none of these fixes are working for me???
Does Anyone have any other suggestions?
My computer is an acer laptop, with Vista on it.
I am okay with computers and can follow VERY CLEAR directions, but am apprehensive to try vague ideas... so please offer suggestions that are step by step so that I can follow them.

A:[SOLVED] i Tunes on Vista

Hi. . .

To install any program in Vista you need to get past the UAC prompt. If in your work environment that requires a password, then it must be provided when the UAC asks for it.

If the laptop belongs to your employer, there is nothing that I can do to help you. If it your own personal laptop used by you at work, there should not be a problem as you would have the admin password.

Many employers frown on employees installing programs such as iTunes because of the possibility that copyright infringement may occur leaving them potentially liable. iTunes itself is would not be a violation, but the music files copied into it may be. Also, they do not want such items on work computers as the files introduced may compromise the corporate network should they contain viruses.

Has anyone else noticed that during last few days there has been almost 20 updates from windows update to Win 7? Could be obvious if it's related to the release Win 7.

A:Windows update going hot, before official launch!

I would imagine they are pushing out the updates now to ensure that people that update once W7 has been released properly, have a fully updated system.

They will still be poking about trying to find vunerabilities in the OS even this close to launch - and will be for some time yet. Frequent updates must be expected!

If you have a full backup of your files elsewhere (and you should have), perform a factory recovery. I've never seen a fix for your problem (not one that worked anyway) short of re-installing Windows or performing a factory recovery.

It happened to me a couple of years ago. I tried everything, but since I always keep backups of my files I decided to start over.

My laptop fires up but will not always launch windows, it can take several startups or removing and replacing the battery, and then it runs OK. I have just done a hard disc recovery but the problem still persists. It is happy to wake from the sleep mode, but not quite so from a cold start.

The diagnostic check on the memory shows no problems??

A:Windows Vista will not always launch

> I have just done a hard disc recovery but the problem still persists. It is happy to wake from the sleep mode, but not quite so from a cold start

So it looks like the issue is not related to the software.
Maybe the higher temperature affects the notebook functionality.
What do you think about that?

Did you check if the ntoebook?s cooling grilles are free of dust?
Do that? you can remove the dust easily using the compressed air spray?

How about HDD check? I think you should check this too?there is a nice tool called Drive Fitness Test from Hitachi? it?s freeware so you can download this for free.

Sorry about this but I have quite a bit of initial background information that really now only boils down to a fairly small problem, but It is all relevant information. A few days ago my computer started getting stop error messages, usually while browsing internet explorer. Sometimes they would just shut down IE, other times completley crash windows, causing an immediate re-boot, rather than the blue screen of death. Anyways, it would boot back up, saying it recovered from a serious error, cause by a device driver, or stop error. One of the remedies it listed was trying to do a repair of windows XP, which I ended up doing. It was only after I did this repair that I realized (remembered) what was causing the errors. Several years ago when I first got my current computer, I had similar problems. I fixed the problems by going into bios and adjusting the RAM timings, AKA slightly underclocking my RAM. Apparently there is some issue with my Motherboard where the speed of RAM I had installed is actually too fast of a speed for the motherboard, even though it lists that it should support the speed (I belive PC3200) Anyways like I said, it wasnt until after I did a repair of XP that I remembered that we had had a power outage a few days prior, that caused my BIOS settings to revert back to default. If I wouldve realized that initially, I probably wouldnt be having the problem I am having now. I ended up running the Repair of XP where it re-installs itself. During the Repair, I reciev... With Creators Update Launch Imminent, Windows 10 Is Still Available for Free

Microsoft ended the free upgrade promo for Windows 7 and 8.1 users that allowed them to install Windows 10 at no cost in July 2016, but the company left the door open for users of accessibility features.

Basically, Microsoft says that those who relied on assistive technologies to use their computers needed more time to complete the upgrade to Windows 10, so the company provided them with this method to install the latest operating system free of charge if they were using Windows 7 or 8.1.

But even though Microsoft originally promised to block this free upgrade system shortly after the July 2016 target, the very same method continues to work these days, making it possible for users on Windows 7 and 8.1 to still be able to upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge.

And the funny thing is that it works just like before and it doesn?t perform any checks, meaning that you don?t have to actually use assistive tech to get Windows 10 without paying.

No plans to remove it just yet
Microsoft says on the page that it still doesn?t have a target date for pulling this upgrade system, and with the Creators Update just around the corner, the number of Windows 7 and 8.1 users turning to this trick to install Windows 10 is likely to grow.

?We have not announced an end date of the upgrade offer for customers using assistive technology. We will make a public announcement prior to ending the offer. We are not... Read more

I am running Vista Home Premium 64-bit
I recently tried installing "spy doctor" because I had this spyware vista gaurdian coming up. I also installed the latest windows updates.

Now, I can browse files on the computer, but if I try to launch ANY program windows asks me what program I would like to use to open the *.exe file. There is a handful of programs listed like firefox, adobe etc. The funny thing is if I try to start firefox and if asks me which program, I can select uTorrent and uTorrent will start up. So it seems like programs are working, but I cannot start any of them up through the desktop icons or start menu program list. This includes any windows programs like system restore etc.

Any idea what's causing this and how I can fix it?

What is the main difference between 7's task bar and Vista's quick launch?

I understand that the task bar is more capable, all of the changes that I see could have easily be incorporated into the quick launch.

I must be missing something, for my first impression is that the task bar creates a little confusion for it is easy to confuse task bar items with open programs.

My first post here. I hope this isn't read as a rant. Sometimes emotions get easily misconstrued on the net. This is a genuine question

Glad to be here and I think this site is a valuable windows 7 resource

A:Windows 7 task bar vs. Vista's Quick launch

I have the same issue with confusing the task bar items with opened programs, as a solution I just set the task bar buttons to only combine icons when full, this will make the opened programs look like they did in vista/XP, while the pined programs have small icons, here is a screen shot:

as you can see, the windows explorer is pined by default, the rest is opened programs. I prefer not to pin anything else, because I'm comfortable accessing most programs I need from the start menu, I always maintain what's in the start menu by removing the things I don't use often leaving only the programs I run often in there.

Confirmed: Windows 10 Creators Update (Redstone 2) to Launch in April

The Windows 10 Creators Update is still in the works at this moment, and there are rumors indicating that Microsoft is aiming for an April release if testing and bug fixing go according to the plan.
And while Microsoft remains completely tight-lipped on its Creators Update timing plans, Dell, which is currently one of the most important partners of the Redmond-based software giant, revealed that launching the new OS update in April is indeed what the firm is aiming for.

Any other details are not yet known, but if Windows 10 Creators Update, internally called Redstone 2, launches in April, there?s a good chance it?ll be labeled version 1704 in order to correspond with Microsoft numbering strategy that aligns versions with release dates.

Previously, it was believed that the Creators Update would launch in March, with some people saying it could be finalized as version 1703, but now it looks like the company pushed the release back for one month and it?s aiming for April to introduce the new OS.

New hardware coming alongside Redstone 2?
What?s also interesting to note is that Microsoft could use the April unveiling to present its latest hardware as well, with some sources pointing out that Redmond could take the wraps off the next-generation Surface Pro and Surface Book models alongside the Windows 10 Creators Update.

The Surface Pro 5 and the Surface Book 2 are both expected to see daylight in ... Read more

Windows 10 Still Offered as Free Upgrade After Fall Creators Update Launch

Back in 2015 when Microsoft officially launched Windows 10, the company offered it completely free of charge if the upgrade from genuine Windows 7 or 8.1 was performed within the first 12 months after the release.

But even though the promo came to an end in July 2016, Windows 10 was still available free of charge with a trick that Microsoft didn?t seem to be too very keen on blocking, and by the looks of things, the same trick continues to be available today.

Basically, Microsoft allows customers who use assistive technologies to upgrade to Windows 10 at no cost, and all they have to do is to ?claim? they use an accessibility feature in the operating system. There?s no verification taking place and the upgrade can be performed by pretty much anyone presuming they run a genuine copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
This doesn?t mean that Windows 10 is free of charge. No, because whoever wants to use this ?loophole? to upgrade to Windows 10 still needs a genuine license for their Windows operating system. But with product keys for Windows 7 and 8.1 still up for grabs these days if you know where to look, moving to Windows 10 is less expensive than it might seem at first glance.

No word on blocking the loophole
So does Microsoft plan to block this free upgrade method? Good question, and although an official answer isn?t available, the company says on the upgrade page that the offer will ... Read more

Hello, I've had this for over a month and have been trying to find a solution myself. That did not happen. It won't start on cold boot, will start on restart. BIOS finishes whatever it does, the signal is still sent to the monitor, but Windows won't start loading. It takes a while (longer than usually) between pressing the power on button and the bios starting up as well.

This is what I did:
Did a sweep for viruses and malware.
Removed current graphics card (GTS 450) and changed to an old one, which resolved this whole issue. Brought it for repairs, they gave it back 1 week later saying they found no problems.
Changed PSU to a better one, did not help.
Did a memtest for 5 passes.
Did a hard drive check.

Things that might have something to do with it:
RAM sticks die on me every 8-12 months.
PCU usage is often at 80-100% when it was much lower before any of this started happening.
It seemed to me that the graphics card does not receive enough power to run properly, but I changed the PSU.
Please help, I don't have the money to change every part and pray it fixes itself.

Here's my DxDiag, note that the video drivers are old, because I am writing this with the GTS 450 put in, have been using an older card before: Daubaras's paste - Pastebin.com

A:PC won't go past BIOS to launch Windows Vista from cold boot

Your machine's symptoms seem to indicate a power problem as failing or under-powered PSUs can cause damage to system components.

What is the make and model of he PSU you installed? A good 550 W PSU would be recommended for a system with a GTS 450. If the PSU you have did not come with two PCI-E power connectors (only one is needed by your card but two indicates a supply that is set up for newer video cards) it probably isn't adequate for your card.

For the time being, my recommendation would be to leave the old graphics card in place until you can afford a better PSU.

Have a fake Windows XP Recovery virus so I downloaded and ran Rkill to remove it, then downloaded and ran TDSSKiller to get any rootkit infections. TDSSKiller comes up clean now. I downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but can't finish the installation to launch and update it. It tells me access denied then when I try to run it again it says it needs to reboot because it wasn't fully installed the first time. I reboot and the Windows Recovery virus starts all over. So I can see there are updates for Vista, I see the icon on my task bar... but I can't actually update it. When it opens the Windows Update window there's no text at all... I can still obviously see the "get updates" or w/e it's called button, but even if I click it it just doesn't update, it just constantly shows it updating (I doubt the update will take me 5+ hours on a cable connection, considering in the past the longest it's ever taken has been like 5 minutes...)

First, I am running XP, Service pack 3, Amd Athlon II x4 620 Cpu with 4 gigs ram, (only 3 seen by xp).

Today I tried to upgrade my I touch software and downloaded the 4.3 software. Then I tried to upgrade it and it crashed. One of things Apple said to do was to upgrade the software so I downloaded I tunes 10.2.2.12 and ran it. No good.
Then they said to Uninstall Itunes.

When I run Uninstall, it does NOT remove the programs, nor the short cuts on my screen. Yet the uninstall says it is completed.

I really needed my I touch tomarrow morning for a presentation as it has all my notes. My I touch is locked up in USB mode, and cannot restart. I can't even get the damm thing recongnized by I tunes, so that I can force a factory reset.

Any ideas? Any help appreacated. Thanks.

A:I tunes _touch Windows problems.

To reset your Apple iPod Touch:

Hold the On/Off/Sleep/Wake and home button at the same time for 10 seconds until the Apple icon appears.
(from the manual)

Sometimes my iPod doesn't want to reset, i connect it to the ac adapter that (should) come with the ipod touch and then see if it takes that, then do the reset.

Verify that your audio/video drivers are up to date, also you may want to get some software to check on your temperatures, your symptoms are common to overheating issues.(fans not operating, etc)

how can I transfer my i-tunes library to my windows media player library? I have tried:
drag/drop
export library/tunes
putting music in a usb drive
It seems to save the music as a file rather than music. Will it work if I burn it to a cd?

A:Windows media player/i-tunes

go to music folder in your directory in vista...

You will find it there and then all you have to do is drag folder into WMP...
DONE

and if you bought your music with itunes...(same on you amazon is cheaper and better)
you will need to acquire some drm removing tools just google it.

I have a 2007 Dell desktop that never had any updates. It's a friend's computer and I started doing all the updates through the updater, there were about 90. This was working ok and then after restarting it was stuck with the screen configuring updates - part 3 of 3 do not turn off.

I didn't realize there were all these problems with Vista until this had already happened.

I booted from the Vista DVD and have tried to restore but it gives me an error and says it won't restore. I've gone through each of the restore points and none work.

What else can I do?
