Hello : Is there any way to manually add a ocx file . For some weird reason my ip camera when I go and try and view the video - I do not get a pop up to install the ocx file .

Hi All, my major issue so far with Win10 is that no matter what i do, a program will not start when i login. i am using say the time and I have done everything from changing the compatibility (check the run as admin) to adding a task scheduler job to run when the computer starts. the program runs fine when i start it manually, but not when i put it into the start menu (using shell:startup) . what am i doing wrong?

You don't need to change boot ini. Windows should be installed first and then when you install XP it will automatically set up your system to dual boot. Don't do an upgrade and select custom install so you can choose the partition you want to use.

I've got a problem with the Add hardware wizard in the device manager. I need to add a network adapter manually for Hamachi, since for some reason, it does not install when i install Hamachi. I've tried to find a solution, but nothing works. Only one thing left to try and that is to add the adapter manually, according to the Hamachi wiki it will work. Though... I can't get that far. I open the add hardware wizard. I choose to manually install, and I'm given a list with what kinds of devices I want to install. I choose network adapter and press next, but nothing happens. I'm still in the same window, it doesn't freeze or anything, just nothing happens. Same thing if i choose something else than Network Adapter as well.

I have no clue how to fix this. I've searched around but found no one with the same problem. Might be because it's hard to explain the problem.

I really need to get this fixed... and yes I've restarted my computer.

I think the whole thing might be caused by AVG. I had a problem with it some months ago. For some reason, it's network driver thingy for the firewall, caused NTkernel to use 1 whole CPU core. I had to go into the network adapter and disable it. Now i completely removed it and all traces and drivers it left behind. But it's still like that. Cannot add any new hardware manually at all. It's not just hamachi that can't install a network adapter, i also tried Tunngle, it was also not able to install a network adapter.

In Windows 7, why can't you add shortcuts to the taskbar by just copying them into
\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

This technique works fine for adding shortcuts to the Start Menu... simply copy them to
\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
When you copy the shortcuts into the appropriate folder for the taskbar, however, they don't appear in the taskbar. Rebooting does not help. Why doesn't this work?

Please do you have an answer for my situation?

Print Server = Windows Server 2012 R2
Client Machines = Windows 7

I have already added our printer (Samsung) and I am deploying through GPO which works fine. However, when I have added the Fax Utiliy (Which sets up as a seperate device) this does not deploy. I tried to add the Fax Device manually on a client machine
and I am prompted to install drivers. I click "install" and it fails with the error 0x000003e3. I believe this is why the GPO is unable to deploy the fax service.

The fax service is on the same IP as the printer object so I cannot add it using LPT1 with IP address as this is in use by the Printer function. I have to create a Samsung Network PC Fax port.

How can I configure this so that users are not prompted to install drivers that then fails with the error? I believe I will then be able to deploy through GPO to my users.

Is it possible to run File History manually at a time to suit. Ideally I would like to run it once a week, but find there is no option for that under the advanced settings.

I don't really want to keep the external drive I'm using for this connected to my PC all the time so am hoping I can turn off File History before closing down and then connect the external drive, turn File History on again when required and hope it will carry on doing an incremental backup of my files. (I do manually backup my files anyway, am looking at File History as an extra safety net)

Its rather frustrating that there is no progress bar so that you know how much of the task has been completed.

I'm not a computer tech so a simple explanation would be appreciated

I downloaded a file to my desktop..& right when I did, Windows Explorer started to restart over & over again, with no stop. It won't let me delete the file on the desktop that's causing it..I scan it with AVG & Ad-Aware & they say it's clean, but I know it's what's causing it because this has happened before (Damn Vista), only last time it let me delete the file & that fixed it. I've tried System Restore..that didn't delete it.

So is there any way to manually quarantine a file?? I see no option for it in AVG or Ad-Aware.

Did you execute the file? If not, it cannot be responsible for your problem. What is the file's type?

Try one of these to delete it on next boot. AVG will only quarantine a file that it sees as a threat.

I'm looking to manually arrange the order files and/or folders appear in My Computer. I don't wan't alphabetical, or by date, or any of the options available. The ideal solution would be if I could just drag them to the correct order. Another (annoying) solution would be if I could input an order value in the file's information to tell it where to sit. I know I could just preface each item with a number and put it on alphabetical but that would be a pain and would look unclean. Thanks!

i was dual booting win7 and xp and then i formatted my xp partition,installed a fresh copy of xp and now it automatically loads windows xp, it doesn't show where i use to select the OS to load

my disk is partitioned c drive for win7 and d drive for win xp

You can install a .cab file using DISM like this from an elevated command prompt (you'll need to update the path in red..)

It should however install automatically anyway (according to the release notes) so do check windows update first.

There has to be a better way, right? It all started with GTA Online started crashing, so I had to start doing some system investigating and when I ran System File Checker there were numerous files that it was unable to repair.

I popped my Windows 8 CD in thinking I could just run the repair utility, but I couldn't find anything of the sort. Is that a thing of the past? It seems like in this day and age there has to be a better way than to compare your files with known working versions manually.

I looked through the System File Checker log and found these unresolved errors:

When SFC /Scannow corruptions are detected and some can't be repaired that is generally the next step.

We are creating an electronic archive for all departments in the company.

We are scanning all documents with the scanner then saving the document as fine.

The problem we have now is the case when the document has several pages or some attachments, which mean that there are more scanned documents.

So how can we add all these scanned documents into the same .PDF file?

I am sure that there is some how to do so but I can not figure out how to do so yet.

Hi, and welcome to TSG. You don't say what version of Acrobat Pro you're using, so the menus might be slightly different than my instructions. Open the master document and go to Document/Insert Pages. This will bring up a "Select File to Insert" window and you can navigate to the attachments. Select the one you want to add and then make sure the location is "After" and the page is "Last". This will add the attachment file to the end of the first document. Hope that helps.

Hello everyone,

Can anyone describe precisely how you add a new switch to an .ini file that has no such switch? This is pretty straightforward, I realize, but this is new to me, and I haven't spotted a tutorial yet that really clears some of the syntax aspects of switches up.

The .ini file is a settings file created by the cd/dvd recorder ImgBurn on first launch. I'm trying to make this a standalone EXE for use on a USB drive, and there's been some commentary to the effect that ImgBurn is making a couple of unimportant registry entries, which isn't helpful if you're running it off of a USB drive on someone else's machine. In the ImgBurn forum, it suggests adding a switch to the .ini file that should halt the registry writes.

The switch mentioned would be /NOSAVESETTINGS. Now, the other places I've seen this switch mentioned describes it as preexisting, or specifies adding it under the [restrictions] section of the .ini file. But in this case, there is no [restrictions] section, just a [Settings] section.

So, what's the exact syntax here:

Should you tack on a [restrictions] section at the end of the file, and then add the single standalone line NOSAVESETTINGS=1 below it?

Or can you add a new standalone line NOSAVESETTINGS=1 anywhere below the first line in the .ini file, which is [Settings], and disregard the whole [restrictions] idea?

installed 7zip today, found it wouldn't open anything

If you right click on a .zip file and select Open with then scroll to the bottom there should be a Look for another app on this PC selection. Chose that and browse to C:\Program Files\7-Zip\7z.exe and select it. That should set it as the default handler for .zip files.

Hi Everyone,
I can ping and connect to servers by IP address from my workstation. However, Sys Admin wants everyone to use the DNS name instead. The only way I know to add DNS names is to modify the host file on the workstation. Sys Admin has forbidden users from modifying their host files.

How else can I map these IP addresses to DNS on a Windows 7 machine?

I have tried modifying the domain, thinking I can use the DNS entries on the domain server. Did not work. If this should be working maybe I'm not using the right domain? Any way to determine what domain to use?

I am decent in using command line, feel free to give non-GUI based answers.
- I do know how to modify host files, including the Windows 7 work-around for having this locked out. But it's a "rule" by the Sys Admin not to do it. So I'm trying to adhere to the policy

- Sadly, asking the Sys Admin for the alternative tactic is not an option. Lame but true.

- I have scoured the internet for info on this issue. Everything I find either involves modifying files or enabling services on the server, or modifying the host file on the workstation. Even looking at the server settings is out (I don't have access). Work policy not to modify host files.

There is no reason to use a host file if all of these computers/servers are on the domain. If this is an AD domain and AD and DNS are working correctly you should be able to ping any workstation on the network via computer name. If you cannot ping them by name then DNS is not functioning properly.

I have a new (2 weeks old) Dell XPS 8700 running Windows 7 Pro. Every time I reboot it starts opening windows (in Firefox my default) to adfoc.us, donate, and all kinds of other crap. I checked and something is adding an additional hosts file with hundreds of different entries. Norton 360, AdwCleaner, and Micosoft MSRT don't see anything. I can just go in and delete the extra entry every time but i would like to get rid of the thing. Any ideas?

Start uninstalling junk from your Add/remove programs list. If you're not sure what something is, Google it. There is a LOT you can remove, which will make your machine perform better and pwn you less.
Dell is notorious for dumping crap on their new machines. My company stopped buying their machines for this exact reason, they even do it to their business machines.
You can even try PC Decrapifier, it is safe and easy to use. As always though, make sure you set a system restore point before messing with your program entries.

I am trying to fix a friend's laptop. I have sorted everything and it is working fine with the exeption of the file names (seems to affect all programs so I am assuming Windows 7. I have never seen this before and an internet search didn't seem to throw up anything either.

When I save a document it retains the file name until I close the file then it adds multiple (1) to the file name e.g. this file was called 'this is a test doc' when I closed Word the file name changed to

All the files in the directory seem to be the same. I does not seem to affect opening the document although it would not let me add a .pst file to Outlook until I removed all the (1).

Dear all, I add name resolutions for hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) and I don't know why it keeps adding comment tag to name resolution after certain period of time of using Windows and after restarting the computer. I thought the problem was caused by antivirus program (I'm using Bitdefender), so I added hosts file to the exclusion list to scan, but the problem kept continuing. Then, I closed Lenovo Solution Center app and the problem was stopped. My concern is whether the hosts file is monitored by Lenovo Solution Center app. And is there anyway to prevent it modify hosts file? Thank you very much,Dat.

This may seem simple to whoever has the answer but i am trying to add the path and file name to the footer on the default excel template, and can not seem to even find the template to alter it.. i have found the Sub to setup up the path and file name, but i was wondering if it was possible to put it onto the default template and if it is, how?

I have Microsoft Office Pro 2003 and am trying, to no avail, to add sound from a file (a music soundtrack) and am not having any luck getting to to play.

I have successfully added a track from a cd but have not been able to get the song to play throughout the presentation. It starts over at every slide. I don't want to use this as I may not have this music available at the time of the presentation so copying from a file is the ideal scenario.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Okay. Gonna try it as I do it in PPT 2003, Peter:

1. Make sure no sound is in your file...delete it if you have it there now.

2. Make sure that your presentation (PPT) and your sound file BOTH RESIDE IN THE SAME FOLDER and you have CREATED that folder specifically (you'll see why).

3. Now, insert the sound file. It says *do you want to start automatically or on click*? Choose whichever. Now, your speaker icon is still selected, right?

4. Hit from the menu: Slide Show--Custom Animation, and that taskbar shows up at right.

5. Right about the vertical middle of that bar is the name of your song, with a dropdown arrow at the far right. Click the dropdown arrow, and choose Effect Options.

6. Choose your start playing option. Now, in the stop playing, type in a slide number to stop playing at. If you want the music to continue through your whole presentation, and your presentation is 10 slides, type 11 in that there box that says "After" and allows you to scroll to a number! Yes! Exceed the number of slides you expect to have in your presentation. If you think you'll have 40 slides, type 50 in there. yep.

7. Now, right click the speaker and choose Edit Sound object. Make sure *Loop until stopped* is selected and hide that stupid looking speaker.

Now if that sucker doesn't work, send me the darn files and I'll do it myself. Lemme know if you need my email.

I am a network/system administrator and I am having to add a user group to the administrators group on about 60 different machines. I was wondering if anyone knows how to program a batch file that I can disseminate down to all my computers that could add a user group to the administrator group. Any help would be great.

I'm assuming this is a domain

You can 1) Use startup script (defined trough GPO) on your computers, that has the command - NET localgroup Administrators /add "domain\yourgroup"

Or you can do some VB code -
strComputer = InputBox("Type in the Computer Name","Computer Name Variable")
strUID = InputBox("Enter Domain User Name", "Domain User Name Variable")
Set objGroup = GetObject("WinNT://" & strComputer & "/Administrators")
Set objUser = GetObject("WinNT://Domain/" & strUID & "")
Change Domain to your Domain.
Take out the strUID's input box and put in the name of the group you want to add.

You can do the input box on strComputer to do it one at a time or do some kind of list and have the vb code parse the list.

Also you can stick either in some kind of GPO or something

Hopefully if your a network admin your users don't have admin rights so you really don't want to run this on a batch file basis.

Is it possible to add bookmarks to an existing PDF in Acrobat Reader? For example, when I'm viewing a large document, I switch between the same pages, and I'd like to have someway to tag the position within a page and later go back to it. I know about "Alt + left/right arrow," but that requires a linear search.

Click "Go Advanced". Scroll down to where you can manage attachments. A new window will appear where you can browse the file and upload it. Then, close that new window and submit your post.

I have a group of entries that I want to add to my %windir%\System32\Drivers\ETC/hosts file for ad-blocking and I'm just not getting it (I've never had the occasion to edit my host file before).

When I open "host" (file) using Notepad, paste in the new entries and try to save it, I get ....

I might also get this message when I try to save it....

I tried to learn as much as I could through Google searches and came across Hostess 3.0, a GUI for editing and managing the Windows HOSTS file and I have it installed.

I know this is a simple procedure for those having experience in these matters, but with my inexperience I worry that I might do something that would mess up my system.

Can someone give me some simple instructions on how to modify one's Host file in WinXP?

Or, perhaps the proper way to use Hostess 3.0 to achieve the same result.

Seems like it would be as simple as modifying any text document but part of the complication is that Host does not have an extension (e.g. .txt) and I can't seem to save the changes without it having the extension.

Note: before I did anything I made a backup of the host file and put it in a different directory.
Also, I made sure that "Hide file extensions for known filetypes" is unchecked in my Folder Options.

I have been using Window 8 Pro's "File History" feature for the past couple of months.  However, I recently had to start over due to a Bitlocker Issue.  I set everything the same as last time.  Yet, when I navigate into File History's
directory on the external drive (e.g., J:\FileHistory\user\Data\....) I see that Windows is now adding a UTC timestamp on all the files, such as "familyvacation(2013_02_23 20_47_36 UTC).mov".
My question is whether there is any way to remove the automatic addition of this time stamp information to the file name?  I don't recall this being present on the initial FileHistory backup I initially did. 

Any and all help is of course greatly appreciated.

In XP, when I had HP's scanner software installed, i used to be able to scan to a pdf. The scanner (and printer) uses the Windows7 interface to manage this hardware, but now I'm not able to scan to a PDF - only BMP, JPEG, TIFF & PNG. I have adobe reader installed.
Is there a process to allows the scanner software to save as (or scan to) PDF..?
Please see attached image.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

I have somehow lost my shortcut to a text file that is somewhere within the MS system or perhaps within the FIREFOX browser system. You add the address of the website to the list, give it a unique IP address from the others in the list and it keeps that website from coming up when someone tries to get to it.

What is the name of that file and where can it be found???

I hope this is enough information and that someone knows what I'm talking about.

@tepeco, I think you are looking for the "Hosts" file, which, in a Windows installation, can be found here: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc. The file itself has no extension.

By-the-way, etc is the actual name of a folder.

I am distributing a small database to a company and they will be running access 2010 runtime on an XP Pro machine. This will be a split db with FE on the users machine, BE on the server.

To avoid having to make the person install the db only on the 1 trusted location that MS gives when you have a runtime version, I want to be able to add a trusted location for the user, without having to talk them through it and me personally being there (they are not local to me).

As such, to disable the security warning each time, I need to add the to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Access\Security\Trusted Locations folder

1. Add afolder called "Location0" (make sure that doesn't alreay exist), if so, locationX
2. Add new string of "path" = "C:\RTMTCL"

Can anyone help me with this please?

Does this need to be a batch file for a specific reason? If your clients are using WinXP might I suggest using a VBScript instead? A simple file.vbs could add a registry key no problem. I have done these type of scripts many times to deploy to our 4000 Windows XP computers at work. Here is a link to an example VBScript:


I'll poke around my computer and see if I can find one of my old scripts that might be more detailed.
