unexpected tab opens in Google Chrome, unpredictably

Q: unexpected tab opens in Google Chrome, unpredictably

This unexpected tab openening keeps occurring at random times, for www.software-updater.com  from Air Software, with documentation in the tab saying the software to download is from Google Chrome.    This is very suspicious to me.  How do I stop this unexpected tab from opening?  Is this something genuine from google chrome?  The tab will not close if I click on the x at the right side of the tab label; I need to use Task Manager to stop Google Chrome.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Something you downloaded and installed recently contained adware....a program or browser add-on.

Use the programs below to find and remove the adware. Use all of them.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.
Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
If potential threats are detected, ensure that Quarantine is selected as the Action for all the listed items, and click the Apply Actions button.
While still on the Scan tab, click the link for View detailed log, and in the window that opens click the Export button, select Text file (*.txt), and save the log to your Desktop.
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can also be viewed by clicking the History tab and then selecting Application Logs.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
Click the button.
For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
Double click on the icon on your desktop.
Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
Click the Start button.
Accept any security warnings from your browser.
Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
When the scan completes, click List Threats
Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Click the Back button.
Click the Finish button.
NOTE:Sometimes if ESET finds no infections it will not create a log.

Hello,

Google Chrome opens only after about 10-15 minutes from clicking

I had this issue before and what I did to fix it was to use the free trial of Revo Uninstaller to uninstall Google Chrome, and then reinstall it, but now the trial is over, and I am stuck without Chrome

Btw, this problem keeps occurring every once in a while.
Now I can't reinstall Chrome because the installation is stuck at the beginning..
Is there anything I can do?

Thanks

A:Installshield Opens when I open Google Chrome

Hi stephenfromnyc!

From BleepingComputer: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ISUSPM.exe-2344.html)

From Microsoft: InstallShield is a component to help keep your computer up to date. The update service component is simply software that monitors when program updates are available, notifies you when they are available, and then downloads and installs the update. To disable Installshield starting automatically at startup, do the following:

To disable InstallShield at Windows startup, launch Task Manager and click the "Startup" tab. Scroll down the list of startup programs and click on "InstallShield." Click the "Disable" button to prevent the utility from launching again the next time you restart or power on your computer.

Please let us know if you continue to experience the same action when opening Chrome. If so, additional steps will need to be taken to rule out anything else triggering the InstallShield notification.

Hello All,

I am running Windows 7 64Bit and I was going along fine using Sophos Antivirus (full version on a corporate licence) and just the Windows firewall and Windows Defender. Some time ago Windows Defender stopped being usable, it would open for a second and then close; I updated it manually but it continued to do this (I tried to run it in safe mode but this seems not to be possible). Sophos was always up to date (daily checks) and never once picked up any problems and continued to appear to update and function normally.

In addition to Windows Defender not being usable I started to get redirects from Google Chrome searches. At first it was only results clicked on when I used the toolbar at the top to search Google that I was redirected. However now it is searches even from the Google website.

I have tried Malwarebytes, SpyBot Search and Destroy, Trend Micro online house call all to no avail. I also then ran a Microsoft Security scanner separate to their AV software with nothing found. I have most recently uninstalled Sophos and installed Microsoft Security Essentials in the hope it might find something. It disabled Windows Defender as expected in the "Services" but would not open. It does the same as Defender did, opens then closes a second later. So I manually updated MSE definitions from the download on Microsoft and ran MSE in safe mode; no problems found however.

So in complete frustration this now leads me here, having just gone out and purchased an e... Read more

Hi there

I got a virus/trojan of some sort today when an IT technician just had to poke his USB inside my netbook. The immediate effect I noticed was that Google Chrome started opening whatever link I clicked in a new tab, even though I did not press CTRL when clicking. Also, when I clicked the newly opened tab, it instantly closed. I noticed that pressing CTRL + Tab allowed me to swtich between tabs without them closing, so yay for me What was even weirder was that the virus/trojan not only affected Chrome, but also my desktop. I could no longer drag and drop to move files into a folder, and I can't move a single thing on my desktop (they'd return to their original place and not snap onto another grid/column/row).

Then I tried finding a solution, and came across two posts on Google support forums, describing the exact same problem as what I was facing (both were dated 2011):

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=67613fa3ec0a4204&hl=en

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=74626c629a771199&hl=en

After reading, I realised that when I click Other bookmarks on my bookmarks bar, Chrome will ask if I want to open all of my bookmarks in new tabs. Anyway, the solution posted by the supposed "top contributor" was really a big help

So here I am After running HijackThis, DDS, & GMER, the symptoms are finally gone (after running GMER, actually). It says the thing is a rootkit. But I'm not sure if it'... Read more

I've been trying to look for a solution to this problem, and I think this site seems to have the most comprehensive, free approach.

This easylifeapp search opens in a tab when I start up chrome. Also, I am getting ads (pop-up, text that has a link to click, text that has images that pop up), which is unusual since I use AdBlock for Chrome. It doesn't seem to be affecting IE, but I almost never use it. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing Chrome, but that has not seemed to fix it either.

I was surfing the net trying to get some insight into chrome, since it is new for me. SOMEWHERE, I came across a suggestion, that causes "settings" to open in its own window, instead of a new tab. I tried it, and it worked, After a while, I realized, that when I open history, or extensions, the "settings" link is no longer on the left side of the page. On the settings page, there are no longer links for history and extensions.

So I want to change it back, to open normally in a tab. Unfortunately, I have no idea how I did this, so I can't reverse it! I am sure that it was not related to adding any extension or plug-in either. Does anyone here know anything about how I may have done this. I usually bookmark a page if I try a suggestion from that page. But this time I didn't. Yes, I learned the moral about following "suggestions", It turns out that this one is not very well known. I keep doing searches, but I'm not finding anything.

There's all kinds of posts about chrome opening windows instead of tabs - but it's all tabs that are affected, and it wasn't a choice made by the user. In my case I actually CHANGED something somewhere to get this great feature - just for "settings"!

Any chrome gurus out there with advice (other than reset chrome to original settings)?

Thank you.

Hello,

I'm trying to repair my parents computer. They were getting Trojan horse warning messages and crashing to blue screens. So far I have updated the BIOS and uninstalled all the browser addons and questionable apps I found on there PC. Since updating the BIOS it hasn't crashed to blue screen. However I'm getting a lot of lywqyjla.exe processes that say they belong to Google Chrome. I uninstalled Google Chrome and they are still there. Each of them is using varying amounts of memory and the CPU usage keeps spiking. I have run malware bytes and adw cleaner, each of them said they found and removed threats but these processes keep showing up.

A:Multiple Google Chrome processes running even though I uninstalled Google Chrome

Welcome to BC !

Run a scan using RKill. Read its description as to what it does. Once you have successfully run the scan, DO NOT reboot.
Proceed with the other scans. Reboot if the MBAM or other scans ask you to.
RKill Download

The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can also be viewed by clicking the History tab and then... Read more

I've tried multiple anti-everything programs from Super Anti-Spyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix, Spybot S&D, and various online scans that have found nothing, or found something but never fully cleaned my system. For a week or two, Google was being redirected to various ad sites, but after my system was "cleaned" everything was fine. Now today, anything remotely related to Google won't load at all. I've tried to manually remove the TDSS google-redirecting virus, but I have none of the files that supposedly come along with the virus.

An install of Google Crhome browser is apparantly recording cookies while the Google Chrome browser itself is not being used;  the cookies seem to be of webpages and sites that other people in this location visit through another browser.  This makes me thing that the Google Chrome browser sneaks information from the user of other browsers on the computer, and this makes me wonder, what more is being done with this set of cookies lifted from the other browser?

This cannot be normal; is it?

Every day, I come to the particular computer with google chrome on it, open history, see the cookies listed, delete them, and only use the browser in Incognito mode.  No cookies recorded during any of my usage sessions.  Later, after other people who never use Chrome use the computer, go online (with Internet Explorer), makes their website visits, and then finish; when I come back to use the computer again and go online in incognito mode on Chrome, ... there again are more cookies listed, and mostly from sites that I did not visit.

This just seems like it should not be happening.  Tell me about it?

Right Click to Google Chrome exe file, select Properties. In the opened window
select Compatibility column, Set Compatibility Mode to Windows 7. Mine was set

For more information go to:

If you had already solved this issue there was no need to create a new thread for the solution. Your post

Recently I thought my Chrome was moving slow and needed to be updated. So I uninstalled it and downloaded it again (this is on my work computer). But now the new one opens but does not open any pages or load my bookmarks bar. I get the "Aw, Snap" message after about a minute of loading and nothing. My company has not suddenly made a no-Chrome policy or anything weird like that.
I have tried uninstalling and downloading again, running as administrator, closing and reopening Chrome, rebooting the machine - everything the Chrome Help page suggests. I tried going Chrome settings, but that would require a page loading and so I can't get there. to My Explorer and Firefox work fine (I'm using Firefox now). What else is there to do?
Thanks for any ideas.

You have a HJT log posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show it the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic.

Got my grand-niece a Dell ChromeBook for Christmas a year ago - no problems at all.
Her grandmother bought a Dell ChromeBook a few months ago and today she got the "Chrome OS is missing or damaged ..." screen.
I followed the instructions and created a recovery drive (using my MacBook) and after a few seconds I see "An unexpected error has occurred..."
Looks like she has warranty coverage on it, does it look like a hardware problem?  Anything else I can try?
Going to make another recovery drive using a different brand of USB and creating it on my wife's Windows 10 laptop - just in case...

A:Chrome OS is missing or damaged - recovery USB stick resulted in: An unexpected error has occurred

I have found out that my Dell Chromebook will do this if I let the battery completely drain. The resolution is to plug it into the a/c adapter and then subsequent ally continue to reboot it about 30 times until it will boot up. Then once it boots up let it charge and it will not do it again unless I let the battery complete drain. The laptop does go into sleep mode when it is low on power if left on, but I have found this to happen when I completely drain the battery. It must be a glitch in the OS for every time I have done this I have been successful in restoring the laptop.

Hi when I start up Google Chrome for the first time after a boot, sometimes a spam tab opens up automatically. Its anything from a promotional Facebook page to a fake download site. This had me worried so I did a scan with Malwarebytes and Spybot. Both detected nothing. I then did a quick scan with Superantispyware and only some tracking cookies came up. I did a system restore a few days back when I did not have this problem but it still persisted.
So this morning I ran an Eset scan in safe mode with networking. It detected 10 cases of win32/bagle.gen zip worm. This absolutely frightened me. It was only able to clean 2, the rest it gave me the option of deleting which I did.
I am currently typing via mobile phone while running a trend micro house call full scan, however while doing so a pop up from Superantispyware appears saying it has blocked a Trojan.CRSS-Gen.Process. I am very worried now. What appeared to be a redirector turned into some very scary Trojan and worms. What should I do now? Thank s for helping.

I have never clicked on any of the boxes, and when I click on the Home Page symbol in Chrome, it goes to my home page and causes no more trouble. I have run the trial of MalwareBytes with no luck fixing this. When I am on the Chrome page without the URL and click on "View page info", I get this:

<!DOCTYPE html><html><head><meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"><title>New Tab</title><style type="text/css">html,body{width:100%;height:100%;padding:0;margin:0;overflow:hidden}</style></head><body><iframe src="http://websearch.helpmefindyour.info/" style="width:100%;height:100%;margin:0;padding:0;border:0" frameborder="0"></iframe></body></html><!

Thanks in advance!

Pete

When I click on the icon to open Chrome, it opens my home page.
When I click on a link in an email, the linked page opens as well as 4 more tabs that get a page not found.
This problem was opened by someone else last month and closed for no response after multiple things were tried.

Thanks,
Harold Menzel

Sounds like malware tampering to me. Have you run any anti-malware scans on your pc recently? It sounds like you may have had an infection, got it removed, and have some broken links. I've seen broken links on people's browsers after running adw cleaner before, and browsers aren't always the greatest at restoring their settings.

In any case, resetting Google Chrome should be able to fix the issue. Click the 3 horizontal lines -> settings -> show advanced settings -> scroll to the bottom and select reset settings.

As the title says, Google Chrome opens then immediately closes. I've tried uninstalling it but it does the same , the uninstall window will just close so i deleted all the files off the PC and tried to install it but again, when installing the window just opens then closes..

Has anybody come across this before?

Thanks.

Hello,

Boot into Safe Mode and see if you can uninstall the program then try the reinstall.

If still does not work try creating a new user profile. Create a new browser user profile - Google Chrome Help

If still having issue make sure that your antivirus is up to date and perform a scan on the PC.

See the thread below and try the recommended fix. Hopefully this helps

My computer is running Windows 7.

About a week ago, I started getting messages saying "Google Chrome has crashed" when Google Chrome was not open. When I opened task manager, many Google Chrome processes under the same name were running. To try to fix the problem, I uninstalled Google Chrome, but the processes are still running.

Right now there are about 15 processes named "dlxyoesklw.exe *32" with the description "Google Chrome" in the task manager. The number of running processes changed frequently, and there are sometimes more than 30 running, all using various amounts of memory. When I press "End Process," more processes just appear.

If I press "Open File Location," it now takes me to C:\Users\Owner\AppData\LocalLow\EmieBrowserModeList\igsqvescqy\mwqvrxfk
If I try to delete the .exe file, it says "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Google Chrome. Close the file and try again" but of course Google Chrome is uninstalled.

Twice I have tried to delete the whole folder by restarting the computer and quickly deleting it before the processes launched. This did not work, as the processes still appeared after the file was deleted, and the folder relocated to a new one under \AppData\LocalLow\
The folder used to be in \AppData\LocalLow\EmieSiteList\ before it relocated.

I have G Data TotalSecurity 2014 installed but it did not find anything.

This behavior is very suspicious. What should I... Read more

For the past few days when I open up Google Chrome I get a white page with a yellow ribbon at the top that says "Chrome didn't shut down correctly" and then an option to "restore" which only brings me to a new tab page.
I have looked for solutions and have tried going into appdata and changing my "Default" folder into "Default_old" then closing down Chrome and opening it again but that doesn't work (and I don't get another "Default" folder as the instructions says I should). I have tried disabling my extensions (of which pretty much all of them are ad blockers) and apps. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome but so far nothing has worked. Am I just not doing these things correctly? Is there another way I can stop this? Because I would really love to open up Chrome and have my homepages there.

Thanks!

We're good! Looks like it had something to do with my ad blocker extensions!

Whenever I open Google Chrome the first time after I finish booting my computer, it hangs for three seconds, during that time I see a wild amount of solid flashing on my hard-drive light indicator.

Upon looking on my task manager, I see 4 Chrome processes running, one of which seems to be causing a'lot of activity on one of the hard-drives. After a said few seconds the process disappears leaving only three processes and no hard-drive activity.

Is there anyway of stopping this kind of strange hard-drive activity when 'm opening chrome? I'm afraid the repeat thrashing might cause my hard-drive to wear out prematurely.

If anyone can help, please respond.

Thank you in advance.

A:Computer reboots unpredictably.

1) NEVER USE REGISTRY CLEANERS - they cause problems, they don't cure them
2) I didn't see any mention of an anti virus scan
3) Spybot and AdAware are old school. If I were you I'd uninstall them and replace them with either MalwareBytes or SuperAntispyware
4) Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recover Settings and uncheck "automatically restart"
5) If you suspect malware you should post in the Am I Infected forum on this site
6) Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply
