BSOD - Usually When Lid is Closed, Maybe Sleep Problem

Q: BSOD - Usually When Lid is Closed, Maybe Sleep Problem

There seem to be two times this happens. I close my laptop lid (set to sleep when closed) and then when I reopen it, it restarts and then tells me there was a blue screen. When I click on the option to look for solutions online, the pop-up window just closes and disappears. Other times it has happened when my computer was idle for a while, lid open (presumably it went to sleep), then returned to it and power button illuminated, but black screen. Nothing to do but power off - or if I close the lid for a while, it will then restart when reopened.
Seems totally random. Sometimes doesn't happen for days in a row, then twice a day.
Thanks for your help. Sorry I'm not super tech savvy.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Welcome aboard, anahata.

Your problem seems to be with your usb port/hub. Is there anything connected in the laptop's USB ports when you close the lid? Say any external HDD or something else? If so, remove those, close the lid and follow if it crashas again.

Turn USB selective suspense on to narrow down the possibility to discriminate if it is being cause by the hardware, or the USB hub driver.
USB Selective Suspend - Turn On or Off

At the same time, try to upgrade your NEC Electronics USB 3.0 Host Driver, using the link provided in the page: Driver Reference Table - nusb3hub.sys.

I've had about 5 instances where I've closed the laptop and put it in my laptop bag to pull the laptop out an hour later and have it be super hot.  It seems something has hung the system up from sleeping like it should when I close the lid.  I'm sure eventually I'll start getting thermal damage, especially the Samsung 950 NVME drives, so I am a bit concerned.  I usually pay attention now that I know this happens, but occasionally forget like today and worry about the damage that could be caused if it was left for an extended amount of time. Thanks in advance for any help! Laptop is a Lenovo P50 with a Xeon processor. Memory is Kingston HyperX 4x16gb 2400mhzHard drives are Samsung 950 m.2 in raid 0, and a Samsung Evo SSD

I have a Pavilion g7 series laptop.  I just pulled it apart to replace the fan, and now when I close the lid the laptop no longer goes to sleep.  I did not make any changes in the power options, so I assume I didn't get the laptop reassembled correctly after replacing the fan.  What makes the laptop know the lid is closed to sleep, and where do I look to make sure I get it put back together correctly?  Thanks!!

Hello, I just received an Alienware R2.  I cannot get it to wake up from sleep mode when the lid is closed with my USB keyboard or mouse.  It does wake up from sleep mode with my USB keyboard when the lid is open.  I just updated the bios to Version A05,A05.  Before I updated the new bios, it wouldn't even wake up from sleep mode by hitting the laptop keyboard.  I had to hit the power switch.
I also have updated the video drives to Version 20.19.15.4312,A04 (Intel HD) and Version 10.18.13.5442,A02 (nVIDIA Geforce).
I am guessing this is still a BIOS problem, but is there a fix?

Thanks.

I have a Dell Studio running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, and the laptop doesn't sleep when I close the lid, except I double-checked my settings in the control panel and it's supposed to sleep.

I've had the computer for over 6 months now and the problem first started yesterday, right after I installed the latest Windows updates. When I close the lid, the computer doesn't sleep, but even when I open the lid, nothing appears on the monitor. It's still black and unresponsive, although the power button isn't blinking, so I know it's still awake.

Hello ieatlikeawolf, Welcome to the Forum.

Could you answer a few questions?
Does the laptop go into sleep mode if you choose Sleep from the start menu?
Have you tried doing a System Restore to a point before you installed the updates?
Did you install Update KB976902 at the same time as other updates?

Hi,
first time here, I have about a week experience (pulled out some hair) with windows 8/8.1, but I consider myself pretty comfortable with Windows in general.

When my win8.1 laptop is in sleep mode, I can wake it with a mere touch of my external bluetooth k/b without any issues, as long as the lid is opened. If I close the lid, I can continue to use it as its connected to a big Samsung plasma tv. But if I let the laptop go to sleep (or put it to sleep myself thru the menu), I am unable to wake it back; I need to pull it out from a/v furniture, open the lid and press the power button.

Is this a win8 thing, an Acer Aspire thing, or worse it can't be done?
Anyone else able to wake from sleep their win8 laptop w/closed lid???

Thanks

So you went to settings-System-Power and Sleep-Additional Power Settings and changed what happens when you close the lid  and it had no effect?
You might open an admin command prompt and type the command below and see what it shows about the Sleep option.

I am not sure when this started, but my P50 is set to sleep on AC or battery after x hours of inactivity. It resumes with the touch of the power button, but all apps are closed.  I have tried setting power settings to allow for hybrid sleep, but this has not helped.  Some posts indicate that maybe apps are closing when resuming from sleep, and not when going into sleep, but i can't seem to find evidence either way.  My system has 64gb of ram and 2 512gb PCI SSD. Any suggestions on where to look?

Hi, Sometimes when I close the lid off my Yoga 260 Windows 10 are not going to sleep. The behaviour is really weird because the red light on the lid is blinking like when it's in sleep mode, but I can hear the rotating fan. When I open the lid it's even weirder. Windows are not locked and I am not prompt for a password. The whole system is very laggy. The mouse is moving in jumps and there is not any response to keyboard or screen touch. After few seconds/minutes the system is suddenly OK like nothing happend. This is not happening all the time and I was not able to see any pattern when this happens. What should I do to get rid of this? Thx for help.

Hi!I have a bizzare issue with my Gen 1 X1 Yoga. The machine will not sleep when the lid is closed. I know this is not a software issue as holding a magnet above the sensor (in between the caps lock and shift key on the left keyboard bezel) sleeps the machine. Does anyone know where / what the magnet is thats meant to interact with this sensor? I assume it is meant to be positioned somewhere in the Screen bezel? if so does anyone know if this is something that could potentially be checked / serviced by a user or will i be bringing my machine to a repair centre.Cheers

Hey hey, so the problem is i want to leave my laptop running when doing renders that take hours on end. I've disabled the sleep mode in every way that I know how to (see screen shots). When the lid is open it doesn't go to sleep, but when it's closed after about minutes it goes into sleep mode (all fans off etc).

This never happened with windows 7 and i've triesd programs like insomnia which haven't helped at all. Id really love to get to the bottom of this, otherwise I might have to reluctantly revert to windows 7

Anyone offering ideas would be much appreciated. Cheers

Hi safety1g,

FYI, I have seen this behavior before on a few Sony Vaio models, and each time it was referred back to Sony support, where they said the option to "change what the lid does when closed" is/was not supported in their power management scheme and there was no workaround for this issue. So, just consider this an FYI at this point; however, if you can't get your issue resolved quicky, I would spend 10 minutes on the phone with your laptop's manufacturing support group to see if they can confirm a similar issue.

Good luck,

I have an odd problem. I've noticed that when I close my XPS 13, it shuts down (as indicated by the annoying front LED) but then later on it will start back up while it's being transported. Sometimes I'll get home, take it out of the computer case, and it will be as hot as a thermal missile because it's been running.
I'm not sure why it would just randomly start up like that? I have the power options to "sleep" when lid is closed, as seen here: http://i.imgur.com/p0x1C86.png.
I don't believe I have malware because I have reset my computer to factory settings on multiple occasions and scanned with SpyBot and Windows Defender.
In Bios "Wake on LAN" is Disabled.
For the life of me I can't think what would be triggering this besides the NSA (I joke). Does this happen to anyone else? Did you find a fix for it? Was it a dell program? Or is there a faulty piece of hardware on this computer?
Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks :)

HiI'm using a HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j198ez Notebook PC running Windows 10 64bit.I have an external display, and it's the only display I need, hence, the laptop lid is always closed. The peripherals I use are:Microsoft Designer Mouse/Keyboard Wireless Kit - BluetoothWacom Intuos 4 Tablet - USBLogitech Rumblepad 2 Game Controlle - USB None of the above mentioned peripherals wake the laptop from sleep. And I am forced to open the lid everytime I need to use the laptop. Previously I was using a Logitech USB keyboard and a Logitech Wireless Mouse (wth USB dongle) - both were able to wake the laptop from sleep with no problem. Gave up on them because I needed the extra USB slots. I also have a Bluetooth speaker set, which led me to belive that the bluetooth connection of the laptop is closing whenever the laptop is going into sleep, since it starts searching for other devices to pair with. This would explain why the mouse and keyboard can't wake the laptop, even though I have checked the "Allow this device to wake computer from sleep" boxes, for both, in the Device Manager dialogue. Any solutions for this?I would also be happy if the tablet or gamepad would wake the laptop. But the "Allow this device to wake computer from sleep" check boxes are greyed out for these devices. Thanks in advance.

Howdy folks, I did some quick searching and could not find an answers to my problem and thus am posting here. I have a X1 Carbon 3rd Gen (Type 20BS) with Windows 10 and over the past 2-3 months have noticed the following problem: Problem: After placing the computer into sleep mode via the start button and closing the lid the computer will randomly start back up. I will often open my pc after noticing how overheated it is and find that it came back on and for some reason the touchscreen has been typing and opening applications. Obviously this is very annoying and results in my computer draining its batter and random applications being opened. Any ideas on what may be causing this and how I can fix it?  Happy to provide driver details and any other diagnostics if you think it would help.  Thanks,Andy

The only way then to make it print is to reboot the laptop - then and only then the print jobs start.

Hi all,
I was just wondering if you can advise on something.
My new laptop keeps waking itself from sleep in my bag. As far as I can tell, the screen comes on and does not turn off and the laptop stays on until it runs out of battery (about 9 hours). This causes the screen and laptop in general to get very hot, as it is in my bag and in a laptop sleeve.
I wondered if it was bad for the screen to get this hot? I know the components can handle it, otherwise the laptop would shut down. But I am worried about the screen.
It is the Asus UX303LA-R4338H. It has a LCD panel (matte, non-touch, if that makes a difference). Windows 8.1.
As for the waking up: I think it might have been waking after 3 hours to go in to hibernate, so I have turned off hibernation in power settings (but I am yet to try this latest change). I have no tasks scheduled to wake the laptop, all devices bar the keyboard aren't allowed to wake it, can't be woken by internet, etc. What is curious is that it when this happens it does not sleep after 15 minutes or turn off the display after 5 minutes, as per my settings. Does anyone have any ideas on this?
Summary:-
1. Is this bad for laptop screen/elsewhere on the laptop to be on, in a closed environment, and this hot for 9 hours?
2. Any further ideas why it might be turning on and then not sleeping after 15 minutes?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

A:Laptop waking from sleep when closed - bad for screen?

It's definitely not good for the battery. Getting hot in the bag isn't god either. If it was me I would do a full shut down instead of sleep mode.

About a month ago, I had my friendly Dell rep dispatch a tech to replace my Bluetooth module and CD drive. Afterwhich, Bluetooth still wouldn't work, and I'm positivie that it's a software issue. I called them back about that issue, and the one I'm asking about below, and according to Dell, my only option is to reinstall windows. He didn't grasp the fact that I couldn't back up my files.

Since the repair, my laptop won't go into sleep, hibernate, or shut down when I close the lid. I also started getting a 'last backup failed' error, and when I try and backup or create a restore point, I get a the 'insuffecient memory for VSS Shadow copy' message with error 0x800423F1.

It will shutdown when I use the shutdown in the windows orb, as well as it goes into some form of sleep/hibernation when I push the power button. The reason I say that is when I open it up and push the power button again, I get a 'resuming windows' message and screen.

Also, I don't think it's a mechanical issue. Reason being, when I close the lid, and open it back up, my mouse will freeze and act drunk for 3-15 seconds. To me that says that for some reason, the program that commands sleep/hibernation is not firing off, or firing off to completion.

I've tried several tutorials/suggestions from this website and others regarding adjusting power settings, disabling wake from sleep in device manager, doing repairs from the windows disk, etc.

I'd appreciate any and all ideas- I don't want to reload Vista... Read more

Hello all, I currently have an issue with at least 2 users... When working on a Win10 T450s laptop, docked to an UltraDock with an external monitor while the laptop lid closed, ejecting the laptop(with lid closed but computer on) from the dock does not cause the laptop to automatically go to sleep. I have all Windows 10 settings configured to sleep when it detects the laptop lid as closed. This can be a real problem if the user thinks the laptop is going to sleep automatically and puts in their laptop bag with the laptop on, and potentially cause overheating issues and damaging the laptop. Is there a setting I'm missing or is this a bug? For time being I'm instructing users to manually put their laptop to sleep prior to undocking. Thank You, -Mark

I've had several calls with support on this issue and I'm getting conflicting answers (hardware issue to x360 does not have these features) and would love to hear from users alike. I use my laptop plugged in most of the times with external docking station, monitor, keyboard and mouse.  And I have my laptop lid closed so I can pretty much hide the laptop under my desk.  Windows 10 setting is fairly simple where I disabled "sleep" when lid closed.  Issue is that the sleep button does not work when the lid is closed.  I cannot put the computer to sleep or awake by pressing the button.  It does nothing. Also, when the laptop is sleeping (flashing white light on the sleep button) I cannot awake the laptop via external mouse or keyboard.  Nothing.  The only way to awake the laptop is to open the lid, which I have to remove the laptop from my desk slot to do and put it back in once it's awake.  I changed windows setting to allow awaking laptop via mouse/keyboard, disabled docking hub power saving, etc etc. The sleep button by the way works when the laptop is in tablet mode.  But still no external mouse/keyboard awake. Soooo.... 1. Is this issue isolated or do ALL Spectre x360 have the same limitation?2. Hi @ElyMayor   Thank you for your reply. The last thing I can suggest trying is a restore back to factory.  Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7) While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time. Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 7) You can also contact HP support for assistance. Hello All,

In the last two weeks I have been experiencing something very strange with my Windows 10 Pro. When my laptop resumes from sleep the Wireless is turned off in Windows. I don't believe it was an update because I have defer updates enabled. Unfortunately, I just noticed System Restore was turned off.

1) I have checked the power settings in Device Manager and the device is NOT checked to use power management)
2) I have updated to the latest wireless driver available.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I believe this issue has something specifically to do with Sleep because when I reboot or shutdown/power-on the Wireless is enabled and working fine. It only seems to be when Windows goes into sleep mode.

It is common behavior for any devices to be powered down if you close the lid to place into sleep mode.

Using a IBM Thinkpad connected to a 32in TV as a Monitor. The power settings already show that Do Nothing is already selected for both lugged in and battery, however when the lid is closed, it still goes to sleep. It feels like there is a simple fix but
I can think of one. Any help?

So I have an Inspiron 17R SE 7720 that has all the latest drivers with BIOS A11 (Win 7 Ultimate x64)...  I have all the power settings configured for correctly for sleep (no hybernate), however no matter what I try, I can't get the laptop to wake when the lid is closed via USB keyboard.
I'm using Logitech's Wave MK560 combo (unifying receiver) - both the keyboard/mouse have the wake option enabled in their hardware settings.  I also have wake from USB enabled in the BIOS.
The interesting thing is that if I put the computer to sleep with the lid open, I can make it sleep/wake it from the Logitech devices.  With the lid closed, I can only make it sleep - the only way to wake it up is to open the lid and press the power button.
Anyone know of a fix to this?
Cliffs Notes:
Lid Open : CAN sleep/wake from USB Keyboard/Mouse
Lid Closed : Can ONLY sleep - won't wake unless I open Lid&press power button

A:Inspiron 17R SE 7720 won't wake from sleep when lid is closed via usb keyboard/mouse

It appears that a new BIOS A13 was released on the 18th March, all it says in the "fixes" section is "maintain release". Will download it now and see if it has fixed the wake on USB issue.

I cracked my screen and replaced with a new one.   Now when I close the lid, it won't go to sleep; rather it goes to tablet mode.   I have to press the power button to make it go to sleep.   I put back the original screen and it goes to sleep as it should.   I've tried two different brand new screens and it will never go to sleep when closed.    Lenovo doesn't sell replacement screens so I'm forced to go to ebay or Amazon.   I have checked setting to make sure it goes to sleep when the lid closes.   The magnets are in the replacements.  Hmm, has anyone ever experienced this?  Any recommendations what to do?   Thank you for your input.

My Yoga 920 seems to ranomly wake from sleep when the lid is closed. I'd had several occasions when travelling to find my latop completely dead when I needed it - or finding it burning up in the confines of my bag. A few times, I've been alerted to problem when I happen to hear my laptop make a notification sound. When this happens, the screen is already on when I open the lid and much of the bettery has been used. I've seen this occur both in and out of my bag. Nothing is plug into the laptop other then the dummy USB holder for the pen. I have Vantage installed and all updates have been applied.

Hello,

My laptop is 1 year old.

Specs:
- Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5
CPU M430 @
2.27 GHz

- Installed memory (RAM): 4 GB

- Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

My problem is that when I click on the sleep button, the laptop gives a black screen and keeps on loading. Then waiting, the black screen continues and nothing happens and the laptop is still on. Then suddenly after around 5 minutes, the blue screen of death appears and written on it power failure or something like that.

I am not really sure what could be the problem. I formatted my computer then quickly tried the sleep mode and it succeeded. But then after doing it again tonight, the problem was exactly just as described above.

I attached the minidump folder as .rar, and it has 2 files.

Looking forward to receiving any kind of help.

A:BSOD Sleep problem - Please HELP

I will look at your dumps; but please follow the instructions in this turotial, run the tool and upload all of the files. This will help us help you better. http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html

Both dumps are error code 9F. On dump blames an Avast driver and one blames Rt64win7.sys, which is a Realtek 8101E/8168/8169 Network Driver. This driver is in the current driver date range; but it is not the latest driver.

Quote:
Error code 9F, DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. Usual causes: Device driver.

Before I recommend updating Rt64Win7.sys (there have been problems with the updated version on some Win 7 systems) and before I recommend uninstalling Avast, which generally works well with Win 7, I suggest you update your Toshiba drivers that are out of date. Outdated drivers can and cause conflicts, memory corruption and BSOD's.

My guess right now is that the problem has something to do with either putting the computer to sleep and waking it or attaching USB storage devices or a combination of the two. If I get another BSOD, I'll definitely post it here as soon as possible. Any ideas?

Welcome
For a start lets use an easy suggestion that has worked for many. Change your power settings to High Performance and not power save.

I frequently get the BSOD error when I try to enter sleep mode. I followed the BSOD posting instructions thread. I believe all the relevant information is attached, and my system specs were set using SystemInfo.exe. Thanks for your time.

A:Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Problem Sleep Mode

No DMP's included.
We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

My Laptop is a: GE70-i550M287FD. (Win7 SP1)

I hope that you can help me out!

Hi,
I have a Dell Latitude 6430u running windows 7 64.
When I first got it I worked through many BSOD issues and it was running fine for many many months.
Now recently it started not sleeping, waking up by itself during sleep and waking up from sleep with an unexpected crash message.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
