Good server for sharepoint?

Q: Good server for sharepoint?

I'm shopping for a server for an installation of Sharepoint, and I'm wondering what kind of capacity I'll need. It's going on a Server 2003 network, and will be accessed via XP & W7 desktops, as well as externally. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Preferred Solution: Good server for sharepoint?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Guys and Gals

I currently have the evaluation copy of the above mentioned software but am having trouble creating a web site under the portal. I can create the portal alright but when I try and add a site under the portal it does not give me any forms to fill out in order to create it. It is a new server (reformatted pc) with win server 2003 on it and all the updates. Any body with any ideas on why the forms wont show when I try and create a site, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

I am wondering if it is possible to use Sharepoint in connection with Access 2007 for the purposes of building a database to manage information that myself and employees out of the office can access... if I don't know the first thing about servers.

Does Microsoft make this possible, or does it require a high level of server knowledge?

I have no experience using or maintaining this or any other version of SharePoint.

I would like to know if anyone out there has any good info to pass on that would help me to understand the concept of SharePoint as well as common practices of maintaining it.
I have gone thru the training tutorial from MS, but it only shows the 'Good' about SharePoint. I would like to know what to expect from the install all the way to the daily maintenance.

Thanks for any advice or help.

hey guys I was a little confused if this was the right place 'all other applications'
So I have extremely limited experience with Sharepoint 2013.
But my boss asked me today if I could just 'check out' what possibilities we might have with sharepoint 2013.
Regarding two things.

1: We have documentation spread all over our 'older sharepoint' and 3 other purchased systems..
this documentation is everything from firewall logs, to password lists, IP lists, printer manuals, etc etc.

2: We have our own constructed Wiki, in reality we have 600 documents in a folder.
like: "How to get rid of this virus" "How to push our security out on iphones" articles to help us in the IT department.

We have an Active Directory and Exchange user setup.
So lets say you wanted to sort all this out, and have it placed in one spot.
with easy search functions, and of course the possibility to limit users as only our Admin accounts from the AD should
be allowed to view the password lists.

Not knowing anything about sharepoint 2013, could you maybe point me in a direction towards something that might be suitable?
also if you plan on suggesting alternatives, let me make it clear we don't wish this to be online, no cloud services

I think what I'm doing should be pretty simple but I'm not sure why its not working.

We have a Linksys RV016 router receiving 2 separate dynamic IP connections on WAN1 (Linksys adsl modem) and WAN2 (Billion wireless adsl router). We also have a dynamic DNS service subscribed to from DynDNS.

Currently, all three the RV016 and both adsl modems are configured to report the public IP to the DDNS service. I'm not sure if ONLY the RV016 should be doing this, or only ONE of the two modems, or if it doesn't mattter.

We have a SHarepoint Server running behind the RV016 that I want to make available from outside, by Internet users.

In the RV016, I've enabled the DDNS service, and forwarded ports 80, 444 and the specific port that our Sharepoint Site is running answering on. I've forwarded these to the static IP address that is assigned to our Sharepoint Server. I've set the Access Rules to ALLOW these connections from any interface, always.

With the RV016 Firewall on or off, hitting the DDNS name always times out, but I know the DDNS service is working because the login information resolves and updates in the RV016 admin, and pinging the name resolves to the same IP address as our reported public IP address.

What else must I do on the RV016, or what should I be doing on either or both of the dsl modems? I have disconnected one, and then alternatively the other adsl router/modems so that we're only receiving one internet connection in trying... Read more

Hiya

On January 13, 2003, Microsoft released Service Pack 2 (SP2) for SharePoint Portal Server 2001. Soon afterward, continued internal testing revealed a previously undiscovered problem in the service pack. Microsoft immediately discontinued downloads of the service pack and is completing the required updates, which will be made available soon. In the meantime, Microsoft has provided this patch for customers who may have downloaded and installed this service pack.

This problem involves the way that indexing is performed. Indexing is a process initiated by content sources set up by the administrator, through which the content on the server is made searchable. This problem may, in some cases, cause the indexing process to be incomplete, therefore preventing portions of the content from being exposed to searches.

Microsoft recommends that customers who have downloaded and installed SharePoint Portal Server SP2 apply this patch, or avoid performing indexing (also known as crawling) until the corrected version of the service pack is made available. Customers who downloaded SharePoint Portal Server SP2 require either this patch or the updated SP2 to correct the problem

Hi, I currently own a photography business (www.christopher-mackenzie.com) And I want to start an ftp server so that clients can access their pictures anytime.

I've tried using yahoo, but between the super slow loads and constantly getting yelled at for various reasons, I want to use a spare computer I have lying around. (everything is set up to GET to the computer from the net, ex: dyndns, router forwarding, etc.)

I want a good FTP server, that has an interface more like e-commerce software in the way the user navigates, Instead of having them browsing meaningless files and clicking on each one to open it. I want them to go into their "area" after logging in and browsing the files like they were at their computer. I've tried phpbb3 because i thought it would work the way I wanted it to, but that was a fail on itself.

And one more thing that makes things tricky, Is i need a freeware type of o/s or software (I have ubuntu and xp at my disposal if i need them) but I don't even know what to look for. Any input is appreciated!

I'm just curious if the reviews of Vipre Antivirus and Vipre internet Security latest version (I use Internet Security) are true?  I have not had any issues with it, though I have had to disable the firewall's web filtering module (they call it bad web site blocking) because it blocks too many legitimate web sites and prevents some of my games and software from updating properly.  But I'm wondering, why in one review, was Vipre's firewall called a "paper tiger"?  Is it really that bad at blocking incoming connections?  I'm curious if any live testers have found anything with the current version of Vipre; how good is it really?  I mean, I don't have to worry that much for whenever I end up on a bad web site, it's always a typo and not intentional, but still, one never knows when their favorite legit site will be cracked and broken into.  Thanks for any feedback.  I like Vipre for everything that I have tested, anytime it's said it has blocked something, that something was actually blocked.  Firewall wise, this would normally be a legit application trying to get through the firewall, and I denied it once, and it actually did what it's supposed to do, though I've never tried an exploit running in a virtual machine with it though.  And then the on access module once blocked a fake firefox downloader from installing.  What have you guys found?  Should I be using a different security product?  Especially with a server?... A:Vipre: used on my laptop and server, but is it actually good?

Hi -
Vipre was always (in my opinion) among the better Antivirus programs, but I find from all of the latest "reviews" that it seems to have slipped slightly from its highest rankings. The "reviewers" still list it in the top dozen or so, but "reviewers" come and go.

Kaspersky is in the top few now (as always), and cost-wise may be a better option, even though you purchase a 3 year subscription.

From current "reviews", there are several changes to what I would personally use, but the "review" playing field always seems tilted towards a few programs that may not always be as independantly assessed, as we would wish for -

Hi all
It's very difficult to get really good advice on this but I'm now trying to build the "Ultimate" HOME server machine.

Note the machine will be essentially used as a HOME (not a commercial / work) server so it doesn't need all the fancy gaming state of the art graphics cards etc.

What it DOES need is enough RAM and horsepower to run 4 Virtual servers, whilst also file and print sharing to a number of "remote" (actually a LAN) workstations.

A "Blade" type server would be OK in a commercial environment but my server needs to be a bit like a conventional workstation.

I need around 16GB RAM (seems hard to get a basic motherboard with enough memory slots these days), and a QUAD CPU. The I/O subsystem nust allow for around 8 drives and two DVD/CD units to be connected and have video output capability to drive 2 monitors (although most of the tine the monitors will probably be disconnected.

I need to have as well at least 2 but preferably 3 Network cards on it.

Most of the stuff I've looked at seems to be more geared to high performance gaming or running NASA's next Mars mission.

A SERVER doesn't need hideously expensive gear - but it does need the capability to have loads of memory and disk drives to be connected to it.

Any IT admins out there who use this type of stuff at work -- recommendations.

Jeez...I run a handful of ESXi servers at work and I usually put 24GB of RAM in those to run 10-12 concurrent Linux and Windows servers and that usually doesn't max out the RAM. So, I would have to imagine that 16GB of RAM is going to be more than enough for home use and 4 VM's.

Quite a number of new mobo's support 16GB of RAM...it will just have to be a 4 x 4GB setup. Quad core CPU's are a dime a dozen. The I/O subsystem to allow that many drives will likely just involve adding on 1 additional controller card. And just about any modern video card can easily handle dual monitor support.

Hi there

Having played with vmware's Hypervisor ESXi and got a "rubbish" hardware server working -- mainly as a POC (Proof of Concept) I want to go further and build a PROPER server obviously as cheap as possible.

I'd like to start with a MOBO that has MINIMAL onboard rubbish -- don't need SOUND / LAN or even a VIDEO card onboard - although Video on a server isn't a big issue.

I do want at least 4 slots for memory -- most Mobos I've seens come with only 2 slots which give me 8GB RAM at the most (2 * 4 GB modules) plus at least 3 or 4 PCI slots. I really would like to have as much as 32 GB RAM potentially available -- not initially but upgradeable.

Ideally Mobo should be based on the INTEL chipset and possibly support for DUAL CPU's -- although initially I'd start with only one (a QUAD processor).

Need enough PCI slots -- at least enough for 2 NIC's, NAS and RAID storage controllers.

Mobo should be also capable of "PCI Passthrough" allowing for example a PCI soundcard to be attached to a Virtual machine running on the server.

Cheers
jimbo

A:Good Mobo for server WITHOUT load of onboard junk

You will want onboard video, else you end up putting a video card into the box and using up a slot. As far as LAN goes, if you can find an Intel board, or one with the right Broadcom NIC's, the onboard NIC may also work just fine with ESXi. Then you can combine them with stand alone NIC's to have dedicated NIC's for everything. 1 for management, 1 for VM's, 1 or 2 for ISCSI uplinks to a SAN, etc.

I'm not sure you will benefit from a dual CPU setup. Almost without question, you are going to run out of I/O bandwidth to the hard drives on a commodity motherboard or memory before you need the second CPU. Plus, if you buy 1 CPU today and 2 years later want to buy a second CPU, you may find it hard to find or expensive to purchase (since supply will be low a few years down the road).

If you can swing it, your best bet would be to put together a storage device to house your datastores. In a home environment, where fibre channel is cost prohibitive, you will be almost exclusively running ISCSI. There are some free Linux distros out there which are well known for setting this stuff up easily. FreeNAS is one of them, and OpenFiler (the one I use) is another. With this box running the datastores, it's unnecessary to really put any significant drive storage space on the ESXi box at all. By having the data residing on the SAN, you have the ability to connect multiple ESXi hosts and see the shared data.

This might be getting more involved than you want at this point. ... Read more

Hi, I just bought a new-to-me IBM ThinkPad R51, with Windows XP, and a Wifi signal is detected. The green Wifi symbol is lit up at the bottom of the monitor, and the icon says "Signal strength: Good". But when I try to pull up Google on IE v6, it says Page Cannot Be Displayed. My phone and other 2 computers connect through Wifi just fine.

I have no idea what the first thing to try would be, but I'm willing to go through however much troubleshooting I need to, if anyone may be able to help me get my laptop to go online. I would appreciate it so much!

A:ThinkPad says Signal Strength: Good, but IE Cannot Find Server

What version of IE is installed?

Are all critical updates installed?

Many websites no longer will tolerate IE 8 in XP...I use Firefox on those websites while continuing to use IE 8 where I can.

Check my System info for the details.
I have recently purchased all the parts for a computer from Newegg (still waiting for it), with the understanding that the HD graphics capabilities of the Sandy bridge Pentiums will be more than capable of playing back most formats flawlessly (and being able to convert some odd formats to WMC-friendly versions ahead of time), alongside beng used as a sort of download server for the house.

Am I right in believing I can get away witout a graphics card?

A:Are the GPUs in the new Intels any good for basic htpc/server use?

It will be fine unless you will be doing some gaming
Any integrated graphics will perform very badly in most graphically demanding applications such as modern games. Get a dedicated graphics card if you intend to do gaming

Is it a good idea to migrate from Windows Server SBS 2003 SP1 to SP2?

A:Is it a good idea to migrate from Windows Server SBS 2003 SP1 to SP2

Yeah I would say so. We've updated all our servers without any problems although people have experienced some problems, in particular the Help and Support files going missing. But a quick google will show up a fix for this.

Like all updates, I would create a backup before you do anything.

Hi there
to any of you network Gurus -- I'm testing a (Virtual) version of Windows 2012 Server. What I'd like to do is to set up a VPN so I can access it from another computer (Windows 8.1) in the LAN (while testing) but using a VPN rather than RDP. A FREE VPN server and client is what I would like at this stage.

Eventually I would like to login from a mobile phone too - but later.

The VPN should just present a LOGIN screen to the user and then show a basic desktop with just say Office and IE installed on it.

I'm totally new to this sort of stuff - so SIMPLE to start with - I don't want to get into "Remote / Roaming" Domains or any other "Geeky stuff" at this stage -- just the simple basics - LOGON etc.

Any links greatfully appreciated -- there's so many to choose from so I don't know where to start. The network connectivity to the server works fine --at least with RDP so I don't have to worry at least about that bit of the system.

Cheers
jimbo

A:Create VPN and good Free VPN software (Server AND client)

First off, a vpn in just a virtual network connection, so it won't natively present you with a desktop or applications. It will get you remotely connected to the network, from there you will launch something else to connect to a desktop, either rdp, terminal services, etc.

Doing a VPN is natively built into sever 2012, so you won't need any software, free or otherwise to setup a.basic VPN.

If you're reading this then you might be able to help me.
I need to develop an application to serve a client. The client being an M16C microcontroller which is interfaced to the ethernet via a Cs8900a module.
All I need the M16C to do is to set a selected range of pins high or low remotely from a web browser to be used by any user over the internet. This will be in the form of arguments to a function presumably (as I haven't finalised the workings yet).
I don't know much about this sort of stuff, but I know how Ethernet works and a little about various protocols etc and programming in C.
Can anyone suggest a suitable solution? I want to know what I should write the server in and any tips for doing it. Cheers in advance if you can help. I should also add that I am programming the workings of the micro in C.
I just want the application to be a no-frills deal but still look nice on a browser (all it has to do is to accept users directions to switch pins/ports and accept incoming info)

A:looking for good cheep Mini PC for (Private) game server hosting

It does not look that you could add any RAM. It is really a very low end entry PC. I would look for something more traditional. Look into the Sunday ads. Sometimes they have good deals. Here are a couple starting at $150.
