I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All,

My wife has an Acer laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.  Yours truly was trying unsuccessfully to set up a bunch of Excel spreadsheets that link to other spreadsheets on a SkyDrive account I had set up.  Realized while doing this that linking to the remote drive was giving Excel fits.  The machine started to become unstable due(I think) to all the unsuccessful attempts to link across my home network and internet.  I abandoned the effort.  I believe the machine was rebooted and the next day my wife was working on the machine again and things started going wonky.  Seemed like there may have been some residual effects of my networking efforts and things started to go downhill and run very slow.  Files could not find each other; something was hogging up 95% of memory but not visible in Task Manager; programs would not start; blue screen of death; all the usual fun stuff. Things seem to have stabilized for better or worse and I am using the machine now.  The lingering effect of this all is missing files from Explorer that I have verified are there.  For example, I created a file using Publisher.  Close the file and try to find it using Explorer and it cant be found.  Re-open Publisher - go to recent files - click the file -  and bingo it opens.  Save, close, try to find it in Explorer again and it is not there.  Not sure what... I am running Windows 2000 and having a problem with my files displaying. It doesnt matter if I am in explorer or opening a file in photoshop or Flash it has the same problem. I'll click open and look for a file but its not displaying anywhere. But, if I type in the exact name and file extention it finds it where it should be and opens it up. I've never seen this before ever and have no clue whats going on. When its open and i try to save it I get an error:

"Could not save because the file is locked. Use the Properties command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file"

That would be great if I could see the damn file to get its properties!!! Plus, something else is going on here because I dont lock any of my files.

I run spyware (adaware/spybot) and keep my virus protection updated daily as well as scan daily so everything should be clean.

Suggestions?

Hi. For a few days, my portable Avidemux had stopped working for no apparent reason - a 'crash' message occurred with whatever type of video I tried to load. I thought it might be codec related so I installed the Shark007 codec pack (even though I don't believe in using codec packs). Avidemux started working again! Did Shark007 cure it? I can't be sure because, as a test, I then uninstalled it and Avidemux was still working. I now have a minor problem (see attachment). I have 'Windows 7 FLAC Property Handler' installed and despite using it's 'repair' feature, FLAC tag info just refuses to show. Can anyone suggest how I get the correct icons and file information back? Thanks in advance. (Also, how do I make a paragraph break on this forum...?)

A:Tags of FLAC files not showing in Explorer

Problem solved - FLAC tag info has suddenly appeared. I didn't do a reboot so can only assume that the 'repair' I did needed time to kick in. I'd still be interested to know how I could have shown this sentence as a new paragraph...

This just started happening a week or two ago and it's a real pain!

If I put a DVD or CD into the corresponding drive on my computer and use Windows Explorer to display the contents, it does so just fine, as it's supposed to.

BUT, if I take that disc out and put another one in to look at its contents, the contents of the PREVIOUS disc will still be displayed! I've bailed out of Explorer, re-opened it, and tried again, but no luck-it will still show the contents of the previous disc.

What's the deal here? Is there a simple fix or is it time to find a tall building and a good time at which to push the machine off the top?

Thanks!

If autorun is turned off for the optical drive, this will happen. Also, make sure you are running the latest updates from MS (including the latest service pack, etc.). Download the autoplay repair wizard from MS and run it to fix autorun problems.

A:File Explorer isn't showing recent files

Hi, there may be other consequences if your disk has been affected, or you may be very lucky and a small part of your registry has been corrupted.

A possible solution to your immediate problem is here:
File Explorer Recent Files and Frequent Folders groups are missing - Microsoft Community
- basically, create another user, and copy the relevant part of the registry back to your original user's registry.

I would also recommend you run
chkdsk C: /F
from an elevated command prompt
and also
SFC /scannow

just to check all is (probably) well.

===================================
Here's a very useful method which will help you avoid a great deal of difficulty- strongly recommended and used by most here:

Start using disk imaging. Regularly. Before any major change, and after a big change or a series of smaller changes. System Restore isn't enough.. it can help sometimes, but only if you turn it on (it's off by default.. absurd).

With disk images you
a. Can restore your disk/partition in a defined time (e.g 20 to 40 mins).
b. Have a full backup - can extract files.
c. Can use them to rebuild your system on a new HDD (e.g.)
d. Have peace of mind (most important!)

Get a copy of Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper (both have free options). The first is more geeky and a cut down version of a commercial product - no incremental backup. The 2nd is more straightforward, offering both differential and incremental backups. (You can read about those yourself if unsure).

Hi, i am new at this, so bear with me lol

We have just moved our XP computer into the living room, and connected it to a 58kb dial-up connection. We installed AVG 8 and everything was running fine

Now we've installed Windows Live OneCare Family safety on the machine so we can monitor my borther and sisters internet usage.

Now, the computer runs extremely slowely, Windows Explorer continually crashes, meaning we have great difficulty opening My Documents, and My Computer or anything that requires Explorer to open

As well as this, now the internet is majorly slow... even for bloomin dial-up, we used to get at least 9kbps, but now its shot down to between 2.5 and 1.5 kbps

AVG is now continuously scanning... even outside of scheduled scans, and constantly wants to update :S

And finally, i have now noticed that small files i dont use very frequently have begun to dissapear from the system!!! music files, images, word docs etc.

We have tried defragging it, scandisk, using AdAware SE Personal 2005, AVG Scans, and they all come up with negligeable results.

As well as this, now the pc wont install files for Trend Micro Online scans to run... so we cant even work it out that way :S

I have a suspicion this could be something to do with OneCare, or Multiple Viruses in the system that have somehow hidden themselves from AVG

PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

First, It's my honor to be with you in this forum. This is my first thread !

I'm really tired and angry with a very annoying error of windows explorer.
windows explorer is getting crashed while opening any folders accidentally, especially folders with large number of files and images. first it appears as windows explorer is unable to load files thumbnails (any kind of files) and appears as white or blank icons regardless the type of file. then when opening my computer in another window , it couldn't load even contents of drivers and hangs as "searching for items".
all this happens suddenly after weeks of normal windows usage. I resolve it by backing up system using Acronis image. but the problem persists. I tried virus scan with no success using AVG. I made thorough scan for C with no result too.
Note that this problem I found with Windows 7 and it forced me to upgrade to Windows 8 then I'm experiencing the same problem now. I don't Understand why.

Note: I think there's no hardware (HDD) error cause I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 alongside Windows and it's browsing files perfectly.

Please help quickly
Thanks

A:Windows Explorer stops showing files or no file thumbnail

Try doing a CHKDSK on the drive that has Windows on it, also when was the last time you optimised the drive? Scan it and see if it finds any problems. It's best to do it from an install disk and go into Command Prompt and run CHKDSK from there, that way you can see the results as it works on the drive.

Hi all! I recently installed Win8 and have noticed that at some point the tags stopped displaying in Windows Explorer for media files such as mp3 and m4b.

This affects my collection of Music and Audio books that I had to perform a big resue operation on.
I can't sort them according to the tags that had been set in iTunes or mp3 tagger. This has always worked previously and the tags have displayed fine.

It's just empty where the tag should be, even for files which I know are tagged, and where the tag displayed previously, in Windows Explorer.

I am running sfc /scannow for good measure, but is this a known Windows 8 problem, perhaps? Anyone come across it and know any tips for getting the tags to display again? I don't fancy doing this sorting on a file-by-file basis, it would take a week....

Hope someone can help !

Recently many of the sites that I visit have the empty box with a small red X in it in place for images. At first I thought it was just the site but now it's happening on almost all sites that have a lot of images. I usually have to refresh the page three or four times before they all show up properly. It doesn't to seem to be any specific type of image I cant view. It happens with both JPEGs and GIFs.

So then I thought that it could possibly be my firewall. So I disabled it and refreshed the page again but that didn't work. So I decided to come here and get some help if possible. It is getting very frustrating.

I have been creating a website on my local machine and then viewing it in IE 7. All of the js used to work fine until randomly it no longer works. It's always given me the annoying little bar at the top that says IE blocked some scripts from running but I always used to just tell it to run them anyway and it would work. Now all of a sudden that doesn't work and infact nothing regarding js on the page works. Not even some of the simple text link effects such as bolding on click.

I have tried:
- Reinstalling IE 7
- The website in IE on other computers and it works fine
- Setting the security settings in IE to as low as possible and also just default
- Adding the tag: <!-- saved from url=(0014)about:internet --> to the page
- Other browsers on this computer and it worked fine
- Set all settings in IE back to default settings
- Googling for hours

Thanks in advance!

I'm having a very bizarre issue on a laptop running Windows 7. Windows explorer is showing all items as the wrong size, it's as if the math is off by a few 0s. For example an outlook file is showing up a 548 GB which clearly isn't possible. I looked up the
file on another computer and it was actually 5.48 GB. Every file on the computer shows up that way. It also doesn't matter if I'm looking at a file on the local drive or on a mapped drive, it still shows the incorrect value. I've never run into something like
this before and haven't had much luck finding anything on Google either. Has anyone seen something like this before or have an idea for how to change the math behind explorer? If that is even what needs to be changed.

As an extra note, kind of funny but even the transfer rate is buggered up, the laptop is transferring files from a mapped drive at a miraculous 522 MB/s, sure do wish my computer could move that fast.

it appears windows explorer has been hijacked. browsing to C:\ shows no files. opened a command prompt and started poking around I can get to different directories, but they all show empty. my desktop for example had probably 15 files on it before I got the virus. opening that directory in windows explorer shows an empty directory. running a 'dir' on the directory in a command prompt shows it's empty too. Opening the start menu everything is blank except a fake system restore application. internet explorer had been hijacked to. it's redirecting all google searches. I've booted into safe mode with networking and I can run rkill then ran malware bytes. malware bytes found some stuff and removed it but I'm still having this issue. Hello all.
First time here and probably not the last on account of Murphy's Law.
My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (x64).
I installed IE11 with no problems.
Once completed, I rebooted but could not locate the IE desktop icon.
Inspected the Internet Explorer folder. All files seem to be there including the .exe file. After clicking on this IE11 .exe file, nothing happened.
Checked the Control Panel to ensure IE11 was in fact installed and that it was "activated." All in order.
This is a mystery as I have used previous versions of IE without any problems.
Any attempts, to resolve this glitch, will be appreciated greatly. Cheers.

Hello
I have a windows vista premimum loaded laptop with internet explorer 8 installed. Everything was working fine up to a point when i had to reset the internet explorer settings to its default.

Prior to the reset, I was able to add favorites and view the favorites in my address bar asi begin to type the letters. But after the reset, this behaviour stopped.

I have tried the autocomplete path. The address bar and the favorites check box are ticked under tools > options > content > settings. I un-checked clicked ok and checked back again, just to make sure that it gets reset in the registry. But still I cannot get the favorites to display in address bar as I type.

This happened before and I followed a registry tweak which corrected the behavoiur. Unfortunately I cannot find the link anymore and I did not add it to favorite !!. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks

Ok, Looks like either no has a solution or no one has bothered to reply. Anyways, for the benefit of others who might have faced the same problem, find below the solution that I figured out.

In IE go to Tools > Internet Options > Content.
Click Settings under Auto Complete
Make sure Address Bar is ticked and so is Favorite.
But most importantly, make sure that "Use Windows Search for better results" is un-ticked.

Click OK and OK again.

Now you will be able to see favourites appearing in the address bar.

Thanks for viewing.

Ok, this question has been asked around many corners of the Internet and these forums and I haven't found a "real" answer so I'm asking it again and hopefully seeking a final resolution to the problem.
Symptoms

When "Protected Mode" is turned On, users are unable to view some folders in the file upload dialog that they can normally view (e.g. under Documents, Pictures, etc.).When viewing the same folders in Explorer running as the same user as the Internet Explorer instance, the missing folders are viewable.Launching Internet Explorer "as an administrator" allows the user to view the missing folders (but this is not recommended due to security concerns).
Workarounds
So far, the workaround that I found was to either run some crazy tool from BleepingComputer called Unhide that resets everything on your system -- this is the sledge hammer-to-thumbtack approach.  Another one was to go into Organize > Folder and
search options > View and uncheck the hide options and select the show radio option.  The last one was to search for the folder in the file upload dialog, right-click the folder, and uncheck Hidden.
None of these, IMHO, are valid solutions to the real problem which is that something is special about this folder that is causing IE in Protected Mode to treat the file as Hidden.
Thoughts
The last "workaround" seems to indicate that the "hidden" file attribute is set for the file, but this doesn't app... Read more

Hi all,

My site shows in compatibility mode in Internet Explorer 8. I couldn't figure out why so I did a little test.. I created a new HTML file and put this into it:

HTML Code:
<?xml version= "1.0" encoding= "UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<title>Internet Explorer 8 Test</title>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>
This is valid XHTML 1.1. How come Internet Explorer 8 still gives me a compatibility icon at the top?

Hi, I just noticed this problem yesterday, of ads popping up in the left and right corner of my browsers. I uninstalled Google Chrome and Firefox, but now it is in Internet Explorer as well. I tried to run DDS to capture my logs; but my computer has been acting as if it is opening them for 15 minutes now, and the program is now not coming up.

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your malware problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top o... I have audio ads randomly playing in the background, and Internet Explorer is sometimes open (from 1 to 3 copies) in the Task manager. By opening up the Sound Mixer, I noticed that the sound comes from Internet explorer. Sometimes, the name of the Internet Explorer program in the Task manager changes really quickly, and sometimes it stays for a long times on the same website (mostly www.quackit.com or www.pinkmoney.com). Sometimes, I can end Internet Explorer with the "End Task" button, but other times, I have to go to the process and kill it. Sometimes, an hour goes by without a single problem, but sometimes the ads are just a minute apart. Strangely enough, they're in French (my language).

My computer is also slower in general, especially Firefox.

I tried following the instructions in this post, as the problem was quite similar to mine, but to no avail.

Cheers!

Hello,
Our company  website contains a collection firmware and executable for our customers to download. Customers running Chrome, Firefox, or early versions of the IE have no issues. Customers running IE11 and
Edge on Windows 10 report that .exe files download properly, but the firmware files with a custom extension do not. Instead, IE11 opens a new tab and the new window contains a little "X" icon. That's it. Nothing in the Download area.
Some of our more adventurous customers searched through there Temporary Internet folders and found the firmware files stored as .ICO files. When the files were copied out and renamed back to to the proper extension
(the main part of the name was correct), our product read the files just file. Any idea why are the files getting their extension changed to .ICO and why are they not appearing in the download area. This is affecting multiple customers.
Thanks!

I've had a couple of problems doing searches in the past few days but most of them seem to be ok now. However, one thing hasn't returned and I know it's not a major problem but I would like to get it back. Previously when I did a search and the various websites are listed, they would show up with the relevant details including telephone numbers and the country flag beside the telephone number which easily showed where the website was based. However, the country flag details are not appearing anymore beside the telephone numbers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Never seen this before and it is most likely a third party search engine.
What search engine, Bing, Yahoo, Google or what are you using to do these searches?

I've set up an FTP server at home and I'm trying to access files via the internet explorer FTP function. The only thing is that I have a linksys firewall at home and I'm not quite sure how to get around it. I access the internet at school so the IP address is constantly changing so I cant just grant access using a single IP. I'm not sure if it's possible to get around it or if the firewall is even the problem but any help would be awesome.

Thanks

A:Accessing Files via Internet Explorer FTP

you will have to set the firewall to forward requests for the ftp port (21) to the IP of the machine that the ftp server is on.

Just a warning that ftp is not the best way to share files and I would suggest going through ssh instead.

Welcome to TSF

First off please do not double post, I closed your other thread. Secondly, why are you trying to install IE8? Just stick with IE7 for now.

Clear the browsers cache first. If that dont work

Try this newer version of Windows Installer. Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable
Reboot and try to install IE7 from link above
