I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If... Over the weekend, notebook was running slow.  Yesterday it would not boot.  The HP logo screen appeared a couple of minutes as usual, but the black screen with the circle never went away.  I ran a quick scan and the Hard Drive Short DST Check failed.  What is this in layman's terms and is there anything I can do?  TIA Have not made any installations or updates; however, after doing a hard reset and running the quick scan, restored BIOS.

A:hard drive short DST check failed

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.  See p. 49 of the Manual: Manual If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally. I would be watching a video, click to a different tab, stuff like that, and everything would become unresponsive and freeze (didn't just happen to my browser, would happen even with my search bar). Restarting and giving it a moment would fix this problem, but it got to the point it happened 20 or 30 minutes after start up. I decided to do a reset, chose to not save my files (didn't do a 100% wipe though) because there's nothing critically important, and I thought it could be a virus. Did the wipe, got an error a good bit in that the wipe couldn't be done (I do not remember the exact wording). Tried again, same thing. It directed me to some options, chose the launch windows 10 normally one, just to see if I was still having problems. Did this, and what would happen is computer would boot up, HP logo, cycle back to computer boot up, HP logo, it was in a loop. Waited a good hour and a half to two hours, would not stop. Turned computer off manually and on a few times, same problem. Turned computer off then on, f2, system quick test, and I got the error in the title FAILURE ID: QBS97X-82L863-XD7WMA-60WD03PRODUCT ID: P1A95UA#ABA

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

My laptop had been working completely fine until today where I had come home and the start up was taking ages. It was stuck on the HP logo for a while and then was followed by a message stating that the PC has a problem and it was "Preparing Automatic Repair".The screen is now blank and does not do anything. I restarted and the same issue occurred. My laptop is OUT OF WARRANTY - bought in 2014 and had no issues with the laptop up until now. The support team on Twitter ran through tests with me on this issue and advised that the Hard Drive needs to be replaced due to the Hard Drive Short DAT Check Failure - just now wondering whether any of the data can be recovered and how to go about it? Any help will be appreciated!!!

A:HARD DRIVE SHORT DST CHECK FAILED

Probably. You have to stop trying to boot the laptop and physically remove the hard drive.  Here's the Service Manual: Manual See p. 43 and 49 for "how to". This is not real easy to do. Post back if you need more help and we can likely find a video.  It will be very similar to this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04324972 Once you get the hard drive out you need a usb to SATA adapter like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ugreen-Converter-Adapter-Cable-Power/dp/B00MYU0E0K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=148...  Hook this to the hard drive and then attach the usb to another computer and it is likely possible to retrieve data. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I have a HP Beats Special Edition 15 p030nr laptop which I have been experiencing issues with for the last two weeks. It began as the computer simply freezing up, not able to load anything once it booted up and I logged in, and this resulted in having to gard boot the computer to shut it down. I completed a system restore of the computer, and this appeared to resolve the issue for a few days. Now, the computer heats up really fast and the fan becomes really loud, then the computer completely restarts itself over and over. It fully loads to the account, I log in and within 2-5 minutes the computer restarts itself. There is nothing that it set to load upon start up of the PC. The only thing other than school documents from professors and Microsoft Office 360 directly from Microsoft have been downloaded. The computer has hardly anything on it as I only use it for school.I completed a system check scan which resulted in Failure ID: GU5B63-7NJ8K8-MFPWLJ-60XQ03 and Product ID: G6R14UA#ABA and the words Hard Drive Short DST Check failed, and Hard Drive 1. I would appreciate any help with determining what this error code means so that I can go ahead and attempt to fix my laptop. It would crap out the week before exams start...thankfully I do have a back up of all important files from the computer.

Hi, Sadly to say, the HDD on your machine failed. The following link shows its specs:          http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03663774 You can replace larger (capatity) and faster HDD. Any standard 2.5" SATA HDD on the market today can do the job. You need Recovery media to rebuild your machine. Did you create one ? Otherwise, please try:              http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

Product Name: hp15-r181nr My HP 15 laptop was running slow and I couldn't get past the Welcome Screen.  I ran a diagnostics test and received the Hard Drive Short DST Check : Failed message.  My laptop is no longer under warranty.  What are my options?

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check:Failed

The disk-drive either has failed, or it is showing that it is about to fail. Given that it is out-of-warranty, you need to purchase a replacement disk-drive, and then reinstall Windows. I looked at: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/7234951/model/7450458 There is no option to place an order with HP to get a "System Recovery Set".This is either one USB memory-stick, or several DVD disks, that you can use to reinstall Windows. However, if your computer was running Windows 10, you have a "digital entitlement" to reinstall Windows 10.On another computer, see: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10You can download Windows 10, and install it on the new disk-drive.If asked to enter a 25-character product-key, click "I do not have one", to activate your entitlement. Although Windows does not boot from the old disk-drive, it may still "barely-work" -- just long-enough to attach it as a "slave" disk-drive, and to copy all your files/bookmarks/music/pictures from it.

A:Notebook Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

MickSull68 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that error message means that your hard drive has failed. It will need to be replaced.Once you have the replacement drive, you will need to use something known as HP Recovery Media to restore your PC to working condition.  Hi there, I am getting the following error message on bootup. HP ENVY m6-1188ca Notebook PC Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: GU71BT-6AA892-XD7X1F-60RK03  System Restore, System Refresh, Automatic Repairs, no recovery options seem to work. I keep getting to this screen only and cannot enter Windows. Is this a strictly hardware issue for certain? What are my options and next steps? Laptop is way past warranty. Thanks in advance for all responses.

Hi,  my laptop (HP Pavilion 15-e051ej / ID E0Z10EA#ABT)  froze and windows OS stoped reacting . I then tried rebooting it manually by using the switch off button. Then on restart, it shows for a second a blue screen error and goes to "preparing automatic repair" sign, then the writing disappears but nothing else happens. I followed the steps recommended in the HP troubleshooting section and ran a system quick test activated by pressing F2 on boot-up. The results are as follows: hard drive SMART check: passedhard drive short DST check: failedfailure ID: 94SF0C-78L8BE-MFPWXG-60WH03 I have no idea what the above code means but I would like to find out if it is fixable without losing the data stored on my laptop. or if there is a way to save at least only the data. Your suggestions will be much appreciated. Regards, nat

Hi,Sadly to say: Most of the time the 24 char failure id indicates the HDD is failing and need to be replaced. Is it still under warranry ? If Yes, please call HP for a replacement. In the US:    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1or HP technical support: 800-474-6836. First off I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC with Windows 8 and I used Internet Explorer 10.

Processor Name : AMD E-300APU with Radeon ™ HD Graphics.

A few days ago, my computer started getting slower & slower, not responding, freezing up and even going to a blue screen before coming back to the page I was at.

So I put it in Safe Mode with Networking and ran Malwarebytes full scan - nothing.

Then I hit F2 at reboot and ran some of the tests on there - Battery was Okay, memory was okay, but this one failed :

Hard Drive Short DST Check - Software Error

Failure ID : RSG080-6P579C-MFGJXG-60VS03
Product ID : D1E80UA#ABA

Does this mean I need to update with windows update, that there isn't enough memory or does it mean my Hard Drive needs to be replaced? This laptop is only 1-1 1/2 years old....

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed - Software Error?!

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

Recently I fired up my laptop and left it downloading an update for Civ 6 via Steam whilst I took a nap. When I woke up I was confronted with a black screen with no curosr. I tried a few fixes posted online but following the advice from the I.T Crowd I tried turning it off and back on again. When I turned my laptop back on I recieved a blue "Unmountable Boot Volume" error screen and my laptop went into automatic repair. I had a screen with the HP logo and "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then it went to a black screen with no cursor. I left it on the black screen overnight but when I checked it the next morning it was still on the black screen. I turned the computer off. My next step was to create Windows 10 USB recovery disk using Rufus. I then turned on my laptop again, deactivated Secureboot and enabled legacy booting. When I saved and exited my laptop didn't reset so I reset it manually using the power button. When it came back on I selected the USB drive via Boot Options and then chose Windows 10 64 bit. It recieved a screen saying loading files. It then wen to a screen with the HP logo and the spinning loading thing HP has. The next screen was a black screen with no cursor. I left it for an hour just in case but nothing changed so I reset it again via the power button and tried loading all three of the safe modes to see if they worked but each time I recieved the HP loading screen then a black screen with no cursor. Finally I did a hardware check and ... Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally.

A:Hard Drove Short DST Check: FAILED

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

Hi, As stated, I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased 1 year ago. Just 2 days ago, my warranty has ended. At the same point in time, I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend. When I got it back, it works just fine, but it had that malware in it that I want to remove. So, I fired up system restore and go on restoring. It finished doing so until  it restarts. When it restarts, I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours, to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media. All works well until I got stuck in the installation. I got stuck at 10% (When I searched on the internet why, the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on. I am able to open it up and take it off for a moment. But because I need to go to work, I decided against it. I turned the laptop off and set off. When I got back, I can't even let it proceed to the installation, saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot. Did that same thing several times and nothing happened. Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check. It passed the SMART test, but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST. It produced the error code: MFUC7T-7RG98K-CD7WMG-64DK03 Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall? Or is the HDD really is ruined? If this is the case, I'm probably just ... Read more

A:Hard Disk Short DST and Long DST check failed, but passed SM...

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replac... Hi, i have hp pavilion g6 laptop and its upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 then windows 10.  From last few days i was getting "Memory_Management", "Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error" and so many other errors with blue screen. Due to this i have to power off the system from main power button by holding for few seconds. Now i was getting hang problem. I saw in task manager that DISK UTILIZATION was 100%. I did a hardware test where i got below results : HARD DRIVE SHORT DST Check : WARNING HARD DRIVE Optimized DST Check  : FAILEDFAILURE ID: 9U3UWX-6KT85B-MFPWWJ-61Q003 Can anybody tell me how to resolve this or i need to replace the hard drive. -ThanksPankaj

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????
